What Redditors are Saying

Why Did Billy Butcher Kill His Team?

TL;DR Billy Butcher's actions are often driven by his deep-seated hatred for supes and personal vendettas, which can lead to extreme decisions that harm even those close to him.

Complex Character Motivations

Billy Butcher is a character with complex motivations. While he is driven by a desire to bring down Homelander, The Seven, and Vought, his motivations are not purely noble or altruistic. Instead, they are rooted in personal vengeance and anger [1:3]. This complexity makes him a morally gray character to some, while others view him as outright evil due to the lengths he is willing to go to achieve his goals [1:5], [1:7].

Hatred Towards Supes

Butcher's deep-seated hatred towards supes stems from personal trauma, including the loss of his wife, Becca, who was raped by Homelander. This trauma fuels his relentless pursuit of revenge against all supes, regardless of their individual morality [2:3], [2:7]. His willingness to consider extreme measures, such as genocide against all supes, highlights the extent of his animosity [1:9].

Betrayal and Sacrifice

There are instances where Butcher's actions have led to the betrayal or sacrifice of his team members. For example, he has been known to abandon his team in pursuit of his own objectives, sometimes putting them in danger [2:12]. This behavior suggests that his personal vendetta can overshadow his loyalty to his team.

Moral Ambiguity and Redemption

Despite his questionable actions, some argue that Butcher is not entirely beyond redemption. There are moments where he shows a sense of responsibility or guilt for his actions, indicating that he is aware of the moral ambiguity of his choices [4:6]. However, his path to potential redemption remains uncertain, as his actions continue to be driven by his intense hatred and desire for revenge [4:4].

In summary, Billy Butcher's decision to kill or betray his team is often a result of his complex character motivations, deep-seated hatred towards supes, and personal vendettas. These factors contribute to his morally ambiguous nature, making him both a compelling and controversial character.

Billy Butcher has done some seriously fucked-up stuff and is about to do even worse and it seems to me that he enjoys doing what he does. Personally, I think he's a fucking evil bastard nearly as evil as Soldier-Boy. What yall think?

Morally Grey. Butcher’s reasons for bringing down Homelander, The Seven and VOUGHT isn’t noble or altruistic but he’s the only one doing it

How is he morally grey then… if he’s NOT doing it for good but for his own selfish reasons that’s not morally grey. That’s a selfish character doing evil things. They just HAPPEN to be for a decent cause. Even if Vought wasn’t the big bad Butcher would still want to take them down for his vengeance.

What part of wanting to genocide all supes despite knowing some good ones is "morally grey?"

Last i know, Soldier Boy was never thirsting for genocide. Butcher's too far gone to the point that he's WORSE than Soldier Boy.

Just because Butcher's one of the protagonists doesn't make him automatically better😂

This plot point was my least favorite in the entire series. I get it. They need to move this kids story forward in a meaningful way but having butcher be worse than his own dad to that kid just seemed like a plot device and not something his character would do.

55 upvotes on reddit
ashcoverdjollyrnnchr · 1 year ago

He’s not being worse than his father.

He snapped in a moment of anger after Mallory said something incredibly petty and spiteful

Butcher is also a guy that’s prone to anger we see it all the time throughout the series and he hasn’t exactly done a lot of healing or therapy, his wife went missing presumably murdered after being raped after that he only had anger and hate for supes, than he gets Becca back only for her to, in his eyes, choose a supe over him(yes it’s her son and of course she wasn’t going to leave him. But for a moment that is what butcher felt) and than she’s killed not long after that by that same supe(again an accident but part of butcher still blames supes even if he doesn’t blame Ryan)

So it’s actually pretty in character for butcher to snap and say something awful in a moment of anger

(Not saying you’re wrong for not liking this plot point. Just pointing that it makes sense and butcher is not worse than a father who physically abused his sons for their entire childhoods)

Previously in the series, Mallory had encouraged Butcher and told him he's not like his father.

In this episode, Butcher confronts her about lying and she retorts that he is exactly like his father.

He walks out, incredibly upset, and bumps into Ryan. The only thing he can think of to do is get Ryan to want to be as far away from him as possible. He will not allow what happened to him and his brother to happen to Ryan.

35 upvotes on reddit
NeverendingStory3339 · 1 year ago

I’m not sure Butcher is worse than his father with his treatment of Ryan. Ryan isn’t Butcher’s son, he’s the product of the rape of the woman Butcher I think really does love, and he’s a species that Butcher hates (and fears, I think). He’s the proximate reason Butcher’s family was split up (although Homelander was the cause) and I’m afraid he did actually kill Becca. Butcher was very cruel and it was a devastating comment, and will cause huge harm. However, his dad abused his own sons in all sorts of ways, severely, over years, driving Lenny to suicide and producing the adult Butcher we see today. He ruined the lives of everyone close to him not just with a single comment but with choices he made every day, over and over again. Again, Butcher will probably end up causing harm orders of magnitude worse than his father did but in terms of their moral choices and personalities? I’m not sure butcher is worse.

This honestly. In addition to potential future Ryan problems, Homelander would've been dead last season if Butcher hadn't fumbled so bad with Ryan.

That still felt so contrived. Soldier Boy and Maeve were 100% on board and would've got the job done had Butcher and the boys not turn. But the show didn't want Homelander dead early so they come up with contrived lameness to have it all fall apart and keep Homelander alive

His motivation is explained in the show. He had barely a pot to pisd 8n when he was a kid.

The wealth to be made from smuggling heroin from Afganustan hidden inside dead soldiers meant more to him than anything else.

And playing nice with cia guy got him connections that allowed for Anvil to thrive.

He says himself that he isn't going to let anyone take it away from him. In other words, greed.

Don't underestimate the love of money.

He was deep in the drug smuggling scheme and making craploads from it, as well as the other covert assassination dark CIA shit they were doing.

The plot to assassinate Frank and the other Marines was to tie up loose ends and ensure no one could talk.

It was about power and money, simple as that.

Low-key I'm on butchers side here. The rest of the team has spent the entire season prancing around, morally grandstanding while achieving nothing while butcher is the only one who seems to understand the gravity of the situation and then Mallory decided to leave her brain at home and turn Ryan against them

I'm honestly rooting for butcher and the parasite next season

Butcher contributes more to the team than everyone else combined. Even Starlight, their “big supe”, who always highroads him does absolutely nothing. Hell, it’s probably why she didn’t want the others to take V. Because if they did, she’d have no usefulness to the team.

And the show has made zero effort to convince me that any supe is worth saving. Just send Annie and Kimiko to another country. Enjoy life in Greece or something.

What was billie's plan in the knife of dunwall?

How exactly was she planning to overthrow daud in the knife of dunwall, while he was the sole reason they all had their black magic gibberish powers? Daud is dead = the powers are gone. Billie thinks Daud is losing his grip, and she's kind of right. Whether high or low chaos the guilt of killing Jessamine is clearly effecting him, and he's secretly saving up a nestegg and plotting to leave Dunwall which would leave them high and dry.

If Daud dies or leaves they'll lose the the supernatural powers they're relying on and if he makes mistakes due to his guilt he could get them all killed so it kind of makes sense for Billie to try and take over and find a new supernatural patron in the form of Delilah. She's ultimately just doing what he taught her to do, something he himself acknowledges.

Obviously we're on Daud's side because we play as him but the truth is he ultimately doesn't have his crew's best interests at heart and they're right to mistrust him and worry about what will happen if he leaves or loses his grip.

I'm baffled as to why the assasins didn't majorly back Daud on this one. Between the two, i would've chosen the guy who lets me teleport, if nothing else. Because i doubt Delilah would share her mark with the assasins, especially male ones

The assassins don't intervene in the duel because it's a matter of honor. This is true for both high and low chaos settings.

  1. In Low Chaos, most of the assassins think that Billie was out of line, but wonder how much of a threat Delilah and Corvo possess considering Billie took her shot at Daud. Although they have their doubts, they still view Daud as a capable leader

  2. In High Chaos, most of the assassins outwardly say to each other that they think Daud is slipping and wonder what's going on with him

Both these statements can be inferred from conversations between the assassins at the start of The Brigmore Witches. To address your point, they did "back" Daud, they just didn't intervene in the duel against Billie out of respect and their code. If the witches attacked Daud at the Flooded District, they would have backed Daud even if it was just to survive.

8 upvotes on reddit
BobbittheHobbit111 · 1 month ago

Oh yeah for sure, there had to be more of a reason that we don’t get, because on the face of it, it doesn’t really make sense unless Daud was not paying out the loot in a equitable way

11 upvotes on reddit
sean_saves_the_world · 1 month ago

I don't think one or two other assassins who actively shut talking are involved in Billie 's coup tho. They're just remarking on his changes.

Makes me wonder how exciting a high chaos mission where daud confronts/ hunts down a few traitorous whalers would be so cool. I know arcane bond doesn't diminish his powers but it would be cool with each assassin he kills he gets stronger 💪🏻

The endgame of every main character

Posted by DawnOfLegion1 · in r/TheBoys · 4 years ago

Billy Butcher - suicide. After finally accomplishing the task he has been chasing for years, killing Homelander, Butcher realizes he is all alone in this world. If the writers want, they could even have Homelander kill his mother before their final showdown, further fueling the fire and desire for taking his own life. With his wife, parents and friends dead, Butcher finds no further purpose in life and ends his life, potentially Kratos style in God of War I.

Frenchie - killed by protecting Kimiko. This one depends on who the writers choose as the final boss of the show, Homelander or Edgar. Either way, Frenchie will sacrifice himself to save Kimiko, before delivering his death speech, and dying in her arms. Unfortunately...

Kimiko - killed by Stan Edgar / Homelander .... it wasn't enough, as Kimiko herself dies during the final fight. Before she succumbs to her wounds, Kimiko crawls over to Frenchie's body and dies. They fought together, they died together, in each other's arms.

MM - killed by Stan Edgar / Homelander. This one happens during the final fight also. Basically, what I envision is a multi - episode, probably two or three, dedicated entirely to the final fight against the main antagonist. Whether that is Homelader or Edgar it doesn't really matter, the premise is the same. In the first part of the fight, The Boys themselves take on the bad guy, before the remaining ones (Butcher, Hughie and Annie) join forces with the rest of Seven to take care of him. During the first part of the fight, poor MM gets the short end of the stick.

Hughie - survives, moves on with Starlight. As the undisputed main character of the show, Hughie has got to live, and he will be one of the only ones to get his happy ending. Him and Annie, now free of any and all superhero duties and powers, will start a new and normal life.

Starlight - see Hughie

A Train - dies from a heart attack. Personally, I don't know why the writers insist on keeping this dude alive, since he just isn't that interesting of a character, but alas. A Train will painfully meet his doom at the hands of one trope that has been associated with him the entire show, his heart.

Stormfront - killed by Homelander. Homelander, in a semi - babyface turn, will turn on Stormfront, realize how stupid and asinine her plans are, and burn her like a Christmas turkey with his lasers.

The Deep - some sort of humiliating / comedy death. Deep, as funny as he is, ain't a good guy. At all. So he has got to go at some point. However, I don't believe he should die in a gruesome way. Some kind of Scary Movie - esque death for him would be perfect.

Black Noir - killed by Billy Butcher. Butcher, roided out of his mind on Compound V, gets his revenge on Black Noir for tearing his house down and bludgeons him to death with a crowbar.

Soldier Boy - killed by Homelander. This one is pretty obvious, Soulja Boy is gonna get all the attention, Homey gets jealous and lasers him to death. Pretty straight forward.

Queen Maeve - intercepted suicide. I firmly believe Maeve and Homelander are gonna have an all out fight at some point, with Homey potentially killing Maeve's girlfriend to enrage her even more. She will put up a good fight, a great fight even, but Homelander is too much. However, Maeve being smart and knowing Homelander, won't give him the satisfaction of killing her. Instead, she will insult him one last time and cut her own throat right in front of him.

Stan Edgar - killed by Butcher, Annie, Homelander and Hughie. If Edgar is the final boss, this is the way to take him out, a collaborative effort from The Boys and Homelander. With Edgar killing nearly every member of the Boys, Butcher proposes to Homelander to work together, which he accepts. Eventually, the heroes overpower Edgar and finish him, but the big threat is still alive...

Homelander - killed by Butcher and Ryan. This is it. Homelander vs Butcher in a semi - even fight now that Butcher uses Compound V himself. Personally, I didn't like the comics endgame of Butcher going insane and killing everyone. These two are the faces of the show, and it should end with them. Just when Homey is about to finish Butcher off, Ryan comes in, insults his father, and helps Butcher demolish him. Homelander, dying, breaks down in tears, realizing what he has been doing for decades. Ryan, however, inherited the cold blooded nature from his father, and fries him with the lasers without any guilt or remorse.

Ryan - forms a Seven / Boys hybrid group of badass Supe vigilantes in dis-honor of his father and in honor of his step- father Billy Butcher.

I know Homelander has to die, he’s the big bad evil they never make it, so that’s that. From the comics we know Black Noir will die as well, which is sad. However, I think Deep shouldn’t die, yeah he’s a terrible guy and all but out of everyone (but Annie, we’ll get to her later) he’s one of the “ok” super heroes and the only one that deserves redemption. I think he’ll turn against Vought, they made him a mutant after all. I hope Annie and Hughie don’t get a happy ending, that would be too obvious and sort of annoying. Also, they should keep some of the “bad guys” alive in my opinion, keep it interesting and somewhat real

I don’t think Homelander has to die. I think the best conclusion for his character would be somehow losing his powers and just becoming a normal guy. That’d be ten times worse than death for him

I agree with this but in the comics he dies sooo I guess they are following that

Ehh, that would be very similar to what a certain other Kripke made show did to the big bad.

u/AshtonLouisMarauder I don't think The Deep is the "ok"'est out of them. Do you not remember one of the reasons this all started? Basically being a rapist and "forcing" Starlight to suck his dick....... Black Noir or A-Train would've been better choices for the ok'est member.

I could see a lot of these happening except the Edgar thing. I genuinely believe he’s just a normal man with a lot of money and influence, and he’s on the older side as well. I don’t think it would take a bunch of people teaming up to overpower him

My problem with that is the fact that if Stan Edgar is just a regular human being, that quite literally equals Stan Edgar = Gus Fring. No difference between the characters whatsoever, except the alleged sexuality.

Well, it might be helpful to know that Edgar isn’t even in the comics. He is casually mentioned as existing off-screen, but does literally nothing relevant to the plot at any point.

why did billy butcher kill his team

Key Considerations:

  1. Character Motivations: Billy Butcher's actions are driven by his intense desire for revenge against Homelander and the corrupt practices of superheroes. His team, the Boys, often finds themselves caught in the crossfire of his vendetta.

  2. Manipulation and Control: Butcher often manipulates his team to achieve his goals. His willingness to sacrifice others for his mission reflects his complex moral compass and the lengths he will go to in order to confront the perceived evil of superheroes.

  3. Conflict and Betrayal: The dynamics within the team can lead to conflict. Butcher's decisions may stem from a belief that the ends justify the means, leading to betrayal and drastic actions against his own team members.

  4. Themes of Power and Corruption: The narrative explores themes of power, corruption, and the moral ambiguity of vigilante justice. Butcher's actions can be seen as a commentary on the corrupting influence of power and the personal cost of revenge.

Takeaway: Billy Butcher's decision to kill his team is a reflection of his complex character, driven by revenge and moral ambiguity. Understanding his motivations provides insight into the broader themes of the story, including the consequences of unchecked power and the sacrifices made in the pursuit of justice.
