Recommended Dimensions
The recommended dimensions for a YouTube thumbnail are 1280x720 pixels, which aligns with the 16:9 aspect ratio commonly used in YouTube players and previews [2:2],
[5:1]. This size is optimal for ensuring that your thumbnails display correctly across various devices and platforms. While some users opt for larger sizes like 1920x1080 or even 2560x1440, these may require compression to meet YouTube's file size limit of 2MB
[1:2],
[4:1].
File Formats and Compression
YouTube supports several file formats for thumbnails, including JPG, GIF, and PNG, but the maximum file size must be under 2MB [3:1]. Many creators use JPGs because they offer good quality at smaller file sizes compared to PNGs, which can often exceed the file size limit when saved at higher resolutions
[3:5],
[4:3]. Editing software like Photoshop or free alternatives such as GIMP and Canva can help compress images effectively while maintaining quality
[1:2],
[5:4].
Future-Proofing Thumbnails
Some creators choose to design their thumbnails at higher resolutions, such as 1920x1080, to future-proof them in case YouTube changes its guidelines or for use on other platforms like websites or Vimeo [2:4],
[3:4]. However, this approach requires careful management of file size to ensure compliance with YouTube's current upload limits.
Tools and Resources
Creating thumbnails can be simplified using tools like Canva, which offers preset dimensions and easy-to-use design features [4:4],
[5:5]. These tools can streamline the process of designing and optimizing thumbnails, making it accessible even for those without advanced graphic design skills.
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While the discussions provide insights into common practices, it's also important to consider how thumbnails impact viewer engagement. A well-designed thumbnail can significantly affect click-through rates, so focusing on visual appeal and clarity is crucial. Additionally, testing different styles and formats can help determine what resonates best with your audience.
Personally I just do 1280x720 as a .png seeing as 1920x1080 apparently is too large, I'm only recently partnered though so to be fair I could very well be missing a trick, was curious to see what image sizes you guys used!
I use 2560x1440 <2mb .jpg files for my thumbnails. I edit and compress them in photoshop
The limit is 2MB. You can make very detailed 1920x1080 JPEG photos with just 1MB. Even 4K JPEG thumbnails will look fine at around 1.5MB to 2MB.
YouTube does not allow 1920x1080.
You can obv take a picture in 1920x1080, but you need to use a free website and resize for YouTube, everyone does that. No idea what poster below is talking about.
Try to post a 1920x1080 thumbnail and then google yourself you will see what I mean.
I've used 1080p thumbnails all the time. Heck, I've used 4K. The ones in Google image search are hosted at 720p, so what? Google decides what gets shown there.
False. Not only that, just like with VP9, once you are a big enough channel YouTube will format higher resolution thumbs using the originals you've uploaded. So why not upload a higher resolution so if/when you do get that perk they will reprocess your uploaded thumb for higher resolution?
You've got creators that have been uploading 8k videos for YEARS so when YouTube flips the 8k switch their original videos will get re-encoded for 8k.
So the same for thumbnails.
Can you show me a link as proof that YouTube does that? I have 53k subs, YouTube never email me about that nor showed me that option went I try to upload thumbnail.
YouTube does allow people to upload images as thumbnails that are over 1280x720 as long as it’s no more than 2MB.
I'm currently using 1920*1080 but l'm just curious what y'all using?
YouTube recommends 1280x720:
either 1920*1080 or 1280*720 (if cropped)
Is there any benefit to using 1080 when the max for thumbnail is 720?
I currently make my thumbnails at 720 in Inkscape / GIMP / Krita.
It's future proof in case they change that. I use my thumbnails on my website and Vimeo too.
1920x1080.
YouTube doesn't consider 720p HD anymore and neither do I.
1280 x 720 pixels. I edit them with Affinity Photo
Does YouTube Thumbnail Size matter on YouTube performance. I usually do 1920x1080, but I see that lot of people go for the 1280x720. Please help me to understand.
1280x720 PNG, every single time.
1920x1080 often gets over-compressed due to the file size (and the thumbnail is only ever seen in full as a video is loading)
In case anyone doesn't know, 1920x1080 is the same ratio/shape as 1280x720. weird shapes with different ratios will result in black bars at the sides or top/bottom.
My usual method is to find a great screenshot in the video and capture it at 1920x1080, and then shear off pixels to create a well-framed 1280x720 version within the original screenshot as the thumbnail. Most people view thumbnails at a relatively small size (i.e. scrolling on their phones), so you want to cram a big image into a relatively small frame so it looks good on all platforms.
Always 1080 - as I sometimes use the thumbnail image at full screen in other videos later on. Just use decent compression, and you'll be fine. No one can tell the difference.
Most people go for 720p, because 1080p saved in PNG will often be over the 2MB maximum file size you can upload.
Sure, you could save file size by saving as a JPG, but then you're losing detail which can be noticeable at larger resolutions.
Would anybody even notice? You never see thumbnails at their full resolution anyway
Some people imagine they can see a difference because they've seen badly made jpegs before and know that png is lossless. You aren't going to be able to see a difference without computer aid between a 1080 png and a 2MiB 1080 jpeg unless something has gone very wrong. If there wasn't a filesize limit, png would be more 4k+ future-proof I guess.
You get the same thing with audio, I remember reading about a streaming service that got complaints because they switched from aac to opus at a lower bitrate - because it was a lower bitrate, despite both bitrates being transparent (meaning you can't tell the difference from the original by listening). Also the lower bitrate opus is objectively closer to lossless than aac at the higher bitrate. (Youtube encodes in both).
Yes, It matters a lot, Your custom YouTube thumbnail Size should be as large as possible. It will be used as the preview image in the video or embedded player use on any website. YouTube recommends that your YouTube custom thumbnail size may Have a resolution of 1280x720 (with a minimum width of 640 pixels). JPG, GIF, or PNG. are the Supported format for YouTube Thumbnail and the size will be 2MB max,
If your YouTube Thumbnail Size is not in proper format then the User attraction on your Video will go low and affect your your video as well as YouTube Channel. So don't take it lightly.
Thanks Rajni2607 for helping.
I'm currently using 1920*1080 but l'm just curious what y'all using
Canva has a preset for 16:9 which is the proportions for 1920x1080... I think... Makes it very easy, anyway.
1080p .jpgs. Don’t use .PNG or something else, as they can often be too large in file size.
Just use canva. It's simple and easy. Just press the create design button and options will come up and just type youtube and then press the youtube thumbnail option and you are good to go
1280x720 its the recommended
1920 by 1080 always works great for me. I use Canva for thumbnails.
I have been wondering this for a while because in the past I have just been slightly editing some pictures and then making sure they are under the 2MB requirement but what (if there existing) is the best template for a thumbnail? Are there downloadable pdfs off google that I can then add and photoshop my thumbnails onto? Anything helps!
I usually do 1920x1080 and convert to .jpg if it's over the limit.
I usually use 1080 x 1920 (16:9 ratio)
I also use pixlr
1920x1080 is the size I usually opt for.
If you are looking for a program GIMP is a great FREE alternative to Photoshop and you can learn it in no time with YouTube tutorials so I would recommend that.
Use the website Canva to make them . It’s free
Just google it ! Jes. ........
From google search :
"Optimize your YouTube thumbnails with these dimensions: 1280 pixels wide by 720 pixels tall, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. A ratio of 16:9 is ideal as it's used most often in YouTube players and previews."
Sounds great! Thanks for such a quick response man
i dont even think you need guides
If you're designing a YouTube thumbnail, I'd obviously suggest 1280x720 as the size, but beyond that, I don't think you need guides or such! Just follow a good thumbnail design method, make sure it engages and gets the viewer to click. A lot of times, people over-complicate a good CTR thumbnail!
I'm trying to find out the optimal dimensions for a YouTube podcast playlist.
It is a square thumbnail, so doesn't adhere to the usual 1920x1080 dimensions - I can't find any details online about this so not sure what is the optimal size.
Why would the thumbnail be squared?
When you create a podcast for the YouTube podcast section, they require a cover and specify that it needs to be in a square format - it's different from the standard thumbnail dimensions. I would take a screenshot, but I can't add it here.
That's odd, if you're working with anything squared I suggest you make a high Res one (as high as it can be, I work with 3000x3000) and hope whatever you're uploading it to will downsize it for you.
Alternatively go 1080x1080.
Thank you! 3000x3000 ended up working great 🙌
I’ve been uploading for a while now and my issue is I don’t know what a good size/aspect ratio for thumbnails are. I recently made a thumbnail I’m very proud of only to find out there are bars on the sides.
I usually make them in 1920x1080 then scale them back to 1280x720 when done because the size is usually too large to upload.
Depends of the size of your thumb
:|
Lol you had the correct answer already so no point on repeating
There's a template from YouTube/Google if you search it up. It's on a help page.
ah ok
1920x1080 is the way to go for thumbnails
that came to mind, and will definitely do that
Hi, so I used Canvas app to create a custom thumbnail with the size set to 1280 x 720 and uploaded the image to youtube. It shows up in the edit page the way it's supposed to look but when I search for my video the image is cropped and you can only see a small portion of the image like it's a short video size with the borders covering a lot of the image.
What would cause this? In the suggested videos on the sidebar the image is full and looks like it should. But when it shows on search or even the homepage it is cropped. Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks
Does anyone know? It looks great in the suggested videos section but when I do a search its cropped with brown borders covering most of the image.
Is it because my video is recorded on my cell phone? It's got the same shape as the cell phone video in the search results. But I thought a thumbnail could be any size?
For the last couple weeks the thumbnails on YouTube are HUGE! I have a 3440x1440p monitor and only get 2 rows of 3 thumbnails on each row. It's absolutely ridiculous. If I zoom out, the thumbnails stay the same size, but the text gets smaller. I can get 4 thumbnails if I zoom out far enough, but then the text is literally unreadable.
I sent YouTube feedback, but haven't heard back from them.
Has anyone else noticed this?
I don't want to be a noob and only see 6 icons on the page at once. I can handle 5x as many (or more) especially with a wide screen.
In my case, it changed back to four yesterday. It's a little better, but the thumbnails for the shorts have gotten ridiculously large.
I have a 34" ultra wide monitor and I can fit FOUR videos per row, why are they actively trying to turn away users? Make it make sense...
A known, heavily disliked update. Most likely a testing phase, seems like they’re reverting back to default though.
I rather decided to move away from YouTube.
I really don't see a problem, it's only just 3, it doesn't bother me.
Yeah, you’re definitely not alone—YouTube’s been testing different UI layouts lately, and it’s messing with how thumbnails show up, especially on ultrawide monitors. Super frustrating when it wastes screen space like that. Hopefully enough feedback gets them to roll it back or add layout settings.
youtube thumbnail size and dimensions
Key Considerations for YouTube Thumbnail Size and Dimensions:
Recommended Size: The ideal thumbnail size is 1280 x 720 pixels. This ensures that your thumbnail looks sharp on all devices.
Aspect Ratio: Use a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is the standard for YouTube videos. This ratio is optimal for both desktop and mobile viewing.
