What Redditors are Saying

Best Handgun in Resident Evil 4 Remake

TL;DR The Punisher and Blacktail are highly recommended for their unique features and versatility. The Red9 offers high damage per shot but may not be as versatile in the remake.

Punisher

The Punisher is praised for its ability to penetrate multiple targets, making it effective against enemies with shields [1:5], [3:6]. It has a quick fire rate and decent stopping power, which makes it a favorite among players who appreciate tactical gameplay [4]. The option to add a laser sight enhances its accuracy [1:6], [2:8].

Blacktail

The Blacktail is favored for its compact size, high rate of fire, and reliability [1:2], [2:6]. It offers great power and reload speed, making it a versatile choice for various combat situations [5:3]. Many players find it superior to the Red9 due to these attributes, although it lacks the laser sight option [3].

Red9

The Red9 is known for its high damage per bullet, making it a strong choice for players focused on firepower [5:1]. However, some players feel it was nerfed in the remake compared to the original game [2], [3:2]. Its effectiveness can be limited in fast-paced scenarios where accuracy and rate of fire are crucial [5:1].

SG-09R

The SG-09R, Leon's starting pistol, is appreciated for its lore accuracy and well-rounded stats [5:2]. It offers decent power, speed, and accuracy, especially when equipped with a laser sight [1:4], [5:8]. The crit bonus makes it a reliable choice for headshots [2:1].

Matilda

The Matilda is noted for its high DPS potential, especially with the stock attachment [2:1]. While it consumes a lot of ammo, it can be extremely effective in boss fights and larger encounters [5:6]. However, its practicality in regular gameplay might be limited due to its ammo consumption.

Overall, each handgun in the Resident Evil 4 Remake offers something unique, catering to different playstyles. Players should choose based on their preferences for firepower, rate of fire, penetration, or critical hit chances.

Handcannon with Infinite Ammo, this gun packs a punch, even though the accuracy can be a bit fuzzy, but it’s a strong gun.

Call me crazy, but I like The Punisher and the bolt gun. The Punisher is fun for lining up several baddies and striking multiple targets with its superior penetration. And shields? Forget about it!

The bolt thrower turns combat into a fun mini game, as I plunk shots into enemies and yoink the spent ammo back. It's a treat!

Honestly even in the OG I loved the punisher, the penetration quirk makes gameplay different and a bit more tactical.

Red9 was the strongest

Standard handgun has the juicy crits

Blacktail is just all around good, jack of all trades which I found boring.

They're all great in their own way.

Two things I love about the Blacktail is that it's tiny in your inventory, and it seems to have the best fire rate. You can really pour it on if you're surrounded!

I agree too on the Punisher, for both the OG and the Remake, it's such a fun weapon to use, and was actually my first go to in the Remake once I unlocked it.

Dare I say, I was a little disappointed by the Red9 this time around.

The punisher is amazing. Even if you don't care much for the penetration. It's got big magazines, fast fire rate and it can have a laser.

SG-09r

Its a custom usp 9 made specifically for leon by the surviving kendo brother. Theres a custom grip and integrated compensator which are both super cool. The 5x crit exclusive is badass.

I mean it's called the silver ghost how is that not automatically the coolest weapon in the game?

After the supposed nerf, what's currently the best handgun in RE4 remake?

Posted by lilasseatinboi · in r/residentevil · 2 years ago

I just got the remake no more than three days ago, saw online that Red9 was the best handgun but then started seeing people mention that it was nerfed, I admit that I don't really understand if it was nerfed compared to the og RE4 Red9 or if it was nerfed in a particular update, point is, what's the best handgun to use? I've seen a lot of people praise the Blacktail, which I can currently buy (I'm on chapter 8) but idk if the investment is worth it when I've almost fully upgraded Red9, I can also get Matilda and Punisher. Any insight is much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Blacktail was the best gun in the og, despite what many say, and I'll die on that hill. Barely less damage, and in return you had a very large capacity, rate of fire, and great damage. In the remake, the blacktail is still solid and imo is still better than the red9. That being said, more testing needs to be done on the starting pistol and the punisher as they are much better than they were in the og.

I think the Red9 slightly wins out on firepower but the Blacktail has crazy rate of fire, so it wins out on DPS theoretically. But anyway, I'm pretty sure all handguns are viable, so I wouldn't stress too much about selling a fully upgraded gun to get a better one. Just go for what feels the most fun!

I think you're right, I'm probably going to still buy the Blacktail in a separate save and try it out and see what feels best to use, appreciate it!

I'm fond of the starting pistol. It's well balanced, powerful enough, and the random head crits can save your ass in a pinch.

Combined with the broken butterfly, riot gun, TMP, Stingray, and Bolt thrower (aka my grenade launcher) and we're good to go!

4 upvotes on reddit

penguindude24 · 2 years ago

Agree here. My first playthrough I used the starting handgun and maxed out the stats. The crits on heads combined with aggressively pursuing melee opportunities for spacing is really reliable. Outside the rare larger encounters, you reall can do just fine with a maxed out handgun and knife. Everything else is for flavor and emergencies.

1 upvotes on reddit
lilasseatinboi · OP · 2 years ago

Brooo I feel like a lot of people are sleeping on the Bolt Thrower, at least from what I've seen online. It's definitely not a good damage weapon but it's pretty decent for stealth or dealing with spaced out ganados, and once you get the mine recipe it's an absolute beast. And I'm ngl I didn't know the starting pistol had that that perk or whatever you call it, might have to go back to it and check it out, luckily I stored it rather than sell it so thanks for the tip as well!

If there had to be a “best” then Blacktail would be that choice. It’s decent/great in almost every category and has no real negatives. Great power, great fire rate, great reload speed.

It was always my favourite in the OG but Punisher is my favourite in remake due to being able to use the laser sight.

It’s weird, crosshairs don’t bother me but when there is the option it’s just horrible without it.

BY FAR the matilda. Only issue is it eats up ammo, but even on pro it absolutely decimated all the bosses when I was doing the minimalist run (though I did have cat ears) it's likely not use able in the normal sense due to how much ammo it eats, but in terms of what's the best it's easily the matilda with the stock.

After that I'd say the starting pistol, i uses that on my 2nd playthroigh after using red9 the first and the starting pistol has way better accuracy due to the laser sight, built in critical from the laser site and then 5x crit chance, it demolishes most of the twisty sobs

I’ve done playthrough with every pistol max upgraded and red nine was the worst….as long as you don’t count the Matilda. But punisher was so good it! I mean sure it’s firepower a bit lacking but all of its other stats are great! Although I will say the black tail would be probably better if it could have a laser sight. Also I’ve used the Silver ghost in a playthrough or two but I always go back to the punisher. Also something I’m just now learning is as good as the riot gun is (and it’s really good) once you upgrade the starting shotgun it’s better in every category excluding capacity. I’m doing my 1 billionth play through with it and it melted through Mendez like a knife in warm butter.

I assume they wanted the player to be able to pick a pistol that fits their playstyle and also be able to switch it up on a replay if they want. Rather than have a definitive “best handgun” that you’d be crazy not to invest in.

Yeah I wouldn't want a "best handgun" per se, but maybe best in category. Red9 was always the damage dealer focused on conservative ammo. Wish it was more accurate and other handguns had higher dps instead, even if the per shot damage was lower

I'm biased, Red9 was my favorite lol

IMO The best handgun in Re4 is The Punisher.

Posted by Strangelion01 · in r/residentevil · 2 years ago

I've been playing R.E. for a long time, I started with 4 when it first came out, and one thing that always bothered me is that not more people appreciate the punisher handgun. It's got a quick fire rate, decent stoping power, and it shoots through shit! If it weren't for that gun I would have struggled with the shielders in the castle so much more. Just wanted to see if anyone agreed with me. Also as a side note, because I know it's loved by a lot, although I like the red 9 I don't find it as versatile in most situations.

All handguns are viable.

My personal favorite is the starting SG-09. It’s good looking(the best looking handgun imo). It’s the one Leon uses in all cutscenes. Gotta love that lore accuracy. And it’s pretty well-rounded. Decent power and speed. Great accuracy with the laser. And I love the crit bonus.

For Ada I again use her starter pistol, the Blacktail. Very powerful and very fast. Just pop pop pop.

I love the Red9 bc of how quickly it takes down regular ganados, but when I need to be faster without losing accuracy, I want the Blacktail

I struggle with the Red9 in places like the ballroom and the last part of the water hall, when Ashley is one floor up and I have to keep enemies off her. They're doable, but easier and more satisfying with the Blacktail.

With infinite ammo, Matilda is best, as it has absurd fire rate. But it’s impractical for normal play.

For that, Blacktail is best. See the infographic below for the stats. You can work out the DPS from this. It also handles well and takes up the least space.

https://www.reddit.com/r/residentevil/comments/12n6q56/i_made_an_infographic_on_some_hidden_numbers_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

DPS is not the sole reason to pick a gun in a video game. Burst damage is important, among other things like utility or crit damage. If DPS were the only thing that matter, the Red9 wouldn't be as popular as it is.

1 upvotes on reddit
N
Nebu_chad_nezzarII · 2 years ago

Red 9 is extremely impractical next to the blacktail in both space efficiency and handling for a marginal increase in per shot dmg but much lower DPS.

6 upvotes on reddit
Jenzira · 2 years ago

There are other factors than what the info graphic shows, let alone DPS. One of the big ones is how Leon's melee crit rate also affected by crit rate exclusives. The info graphic also doesn't take into account critical hits, or the effects of the laser sight. These things drastically change how much damage potential the SG-09/S9 have.

1 upvotes on reddit
N
Nebu_chad_nezzarII · 2 years ago

You can Calculate the expected average dmg if you assume 1 in 3 shots are crits and spread that over 3 shots, it’s about 3.3 dmg for SG vs blacktail 3.6 dmg. Blacktail also fires faster so there is not much contest.

The crit rate applying to melee is cute, but impractical at higher difficulties to melee a lot. It also has no effect on bosses and other hard fights.

For handguns it's in my objective opinion.

Matilda Blacktail Punisher/sentinel nine (both good so can't decide on which gets third spot.)

The matilda with stock becomes an insane dps machine however does chew ammo so don't waste shots. Upside more space in case since it can hold up too 61 bullets max.

Blacktail has small size, consistent and small crosshair, fast fire rate and highest reload speed of all handguns. (Its damage is slightly less than red9 but don't be fooled by this. The fire rate and reload allow it to have higher dps.)

Sentinel nine has high fire rate. Second largest magazine and critical exclusive that gives it all round fantastic dps in most situations.

Pretty much, though I prefer the Bolt-Action, in the remake it is peak.

The riot gun is better than the striker in pretty much every aspect except ammo capacity and that it's better suited to range while the Striker is better close up.

For Pistols, I'd say the default handgun and the Blacktail, the other 3 are ok with the next one I'd say is the Red9 just because of it's damage output.

Best Handgun In Classic RE4?

Posted by Disappointing_Search · in r/residentevil4 · 2 years ago

I'm wondering what is the best handgun in your opinion. I would have said the Blacktail due to it's overall balanced stats but after seeing a video analysis on the Silver Ghost (Default). It concluded that the cirtical chance exclusive affects all of Leon's abilities while equiped meaning that you get a higher crit chance with kicks and your knife as well. So I might have to say the Silver Ghost.

Not counting exclusive upgrades, Red9 is the best just due to it’s firepower.

However when you factor in the exclusives, the Silver Ghost (starting handgun) is far and away the best. It gets a x5 crit boost for hitting weakness (headshots), and the boost also works on your melee and knife attacks. It’s possible this side effect was not intentional.

That said, all the handguns are very usable. There’s no wrong choice. Except maybe the Matilda.

1 upvotes on reddit
T
Trunks252 · 2 years ago

You just answered your own question. It saps your ammo. I’m not saying it isn’t fun, but it’s not viable to fill the same role as Red9 or any of the other handguns.

Sure, once you have the infinite weapons, it doesn’t matter that it runs out of ammo. You can just switch to the infinite launcher. But in a game where it’s important to not waste ammo, this is by far the worst weapon in that regard.

One bullet from the Red9 does 6.5 damage maxed, more than 3 times that of a single Matilda bullet. One bullet from the Silver Ghost does 2.0, same as Matilda, but it has 5x crit chance. There’s just no comparison.

The fact that it’s relegated only on NG+ just means it’s not even worth discussing. It’s just kinda there. It’s not even comparable to the other bonus weapons.

It’s never the best choice, and I can’t even think of a single time I’d say it’s a good idea to use it. Personally I think it’s the only bad weapon in the game. Luckily they rebalanced it and combat in general in the remake, and it’s more useful.

2 upvotes on reddit
Skinny_Beans · 2 years ago

Burning through ammo is the problem. You can't craft obviously so you're at the mercy of drops and round for round you're never getting more out of the Matilda than any other sidearm. If you like it that's cool, but it's nowhere near the best and that's what this post is about

If you want to do high damage per shot, red 9. General workhorse, fire and forget. With stock basically becomes a marksman rifle.

If you want to go for headshots, silver ghost and sentinel. Excels against plagas and special variant weakpoints.

If you want to line enemies up or shoot through shields, punisher. Excels against crowds and shields.

If you want a balanced gun that has high damage but not the highest, decent fire rate, decent accuracy, etc. Then blacktail. General workhorse that does everything at a high level but excels at nothing.

If you want rapid fire and max dps at the cost of ammo efficiency, matilda. Excels against special variants and bosses bit runs out of ammo against mobs. Basically an assault rifle. Only good with stock.

Each gun excels at different things so it's up to playstyle.

If I had to choose an objectively "best" gun overall, I would say blacktail. That said I use almost exclusively the silver ghost because it fits my playstyle and I love the look, and I use the matilda because it's the most fun to me.

It’s kinda a toss up in the remake. For pure damage it’s the red9 but that also has pretty bad accuracy. The blacktail is basically the opposite, not as good damage but the accuracy is very good

The stock helps a lot, specially for long distance shots and apparently staggering? I saw a whole few paragraphs of all the subtle red9 pros somewhere

Stock does help a lot but then you’re using a lot more space than if you just had the blacktail. I think efficiency-wise the blacktail might just be a bit better bet it really comes down to personal preference

I'm very partial to the SG-09 and the Sentinel 9. I love the high capacity and relatively high fire rate of the Sentinel 9 because it means I can hold more ammo in the same amount of space (31 in the gun and 50rd box) and the low recoil with the laser sight pairs very nicely with the moderate fire rate for quick follow up shots.

I tried the Red 9 in the shooting range and I personally hated it. Without the laser, it's brutally inaccurate and follow up shots can't be too plentiful. I haven't tried the Punisher or Blacktail yet. I don't much care for the penetration of the Punisher and the Blacktail's capacity makes me wanting more.

I tended to use the red9

I like the starting pistol. It does good damage and is compatible with laser sight. If red 9 was compatible with laser sight I would use it all day, but it isn’t, so I’m Happy with the original.

What is the best pistol to use in RE4?

I usually use the black tail when I get the chance to buy it. But I’m curious what yall think is the best pistol to use throughout the game.

So for the Original RE4 *Silver Ghost (Handgun): it's pretty well balanced and weak but when maxed out 5x critical headshots are very useful and while there's nothing confirmed on paper (I've noticed) it increases the power of the knife a bit more. *Punisher: weakest of the handguns is the FN 5.7 aka the punisher it has a high ammo capacity and firing speed to compensate for lack of power however this isn't entirely useless as it's ammo will penetrate through groups of enemies (yeah no one cares unless you got mods on to make groups of enemies) but effective against shields. Best part is you can get one free if you get 10 medallions but if you get all 15 it comes with a free upgrade to firepower off the bat (I get all 15 cause it sells for more without buying anything) *Red 9: my personal favorite (I am a sucker for firepower above anything) the strongest of all handguns in the original GameCube, PC and PS2/3 this thing had a max firepower of 5.0 but the PAL version like PS4 and up gave it a 6.5 firepower either way this thing is a borderline magnum seriously kill a Dr Salvador in 4-6 shots and throw in it has a stock too for better accuracy and reduced recoil it's a great gun stranger though I wouldn't recommend this to beginners due to slower fire rate and reload speed, a gun like this requires some tactical thinking. *Blacktail: this Springfield XD is a great gun especially for beginners, most people swear by it and frankly I don't blame them it's got fast firing speed, reload speed, great accuracy, ammo capacity and third strongest handgun in the game (I know "it's the second strongest" but it's third) overall this is great and while sure I could stroke it's ego more I would say give it a try yourself and you'll see why people love it. *Matilda: The VP70 with stock is the second strongest gun in the game (sure it could be the strongest beating Red 9 but it has one flaw beating that chance) reason I say it's second strongest sure it's firepower is lower than the blacktail but it's got a 3 round burst firing system which is amazing taking its lower number and multiplying it by x3 making it deal excellent damage but the flaw in it's system putting it in #2 spot is it eats up ammo rather quickly otherwise it's an amazing gun I would 10/10 recommend it especially when you can max it's capacity to hold up to 100 rounds per magazine.

Recommended for first timer: Blacktail or Silver Ghost

Remake Now over to the Remake this time I'll be adding a bit more *SG-09: This standard starter is the Silver Ghost and like before pretty balanced but weak starting but critical hits get x5 and can attach the laser sight to it making it great for critical hits. *Sentinel Nine: This gun at start is better than SG-09 but as you upgrade it it's slightly weaker than it but does hold more ammo making it great for large groups of enemies especially if the laser is attached to it also good for critical hits with x5. *Punisher just like before it's not much different from the OG counterpart other than you can attach a laser to it, though even without it it's one of the most accurate handguns in the game. Blacktail: this time it is the second most powerful handgun in the game and definitely recommended for beginners faster reticle speed to boot with its other attributes it's only downfall is it has the lowest ammo capacity with a max of 14+1 in the chamber and cannot have the laser equipped to it. *Red 9: I still swear by this gun in my handgun and knife only gameplay while most guns in the remake got nerfed compared to the OG the Red 9 still maintains its power over all standards but I DO NOT recommend this to anyone without the stock due to its wide reticle and with it still being slow and low ammo capacity not for beginners it too cannot equip the laser. *Matilda: so this time the Matilda is the 3rd strongest due to the fact you can't just up and burst fire like before. Without the stock honestly it's kinda trash truthfully since it's semi automatic function is dog water with groups or tough enemies, but it shines with the stock going burst fire function taking enemies down with ease, like before it'll eat up ammo rather quickly but this time it's not a problem since you can craft ammo with the handgun charm +30%, Don Jose charm +15%, Soldier w/hammer charm +20%, and Silver case increase chance to drop handgun ammo you'd be lucky if you ever ran out.

Recommended for beginners: SG-09, Sentinel Nine, Blacktail

Punisher in castle. Black tail everywhere else.

Agreed. Fully upgraded Blacktail takes 4 shots to put down the average enemy and you can fire those shots in 2 seconds. It also takes up so little space.

SG-09 has more damage and better reload speed.

But the Sentinel Nine has a much larger magazine and a higher rate of fire, which will make a difference in the mid and late game. The damage difference is negligible

I just use standard with the laser sight, definitely not the best but feels good and consistent for me

assuming you're talking about the original lol

Stock Handgun is pretty good, and if you max level it you get a nifty bonus critical hit chance which is pretty fun

Blacktail is also good, but I've never really liked how it boosts your aiming sensitivity. Besides that it's got pretty good stats

Red 9 is the fan favourite. Super high damage for a pistol, great accuracy with the stock; just reliable in any situation (and imo the most satisfying to shoot)

There is also the Matilda; unlocked post final boss. Shreds through everything but also eats through your ammo wit the whole 3 round burst gimmick. More of a fun gimmick weapon but it can be pretty good for bosses or if you wanna breeze through a crowd

Best Handgun in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Key Considerations for Handguns in Resident Evil 4 Remake

  1. Damage Output: Look for handguns that provide a good balance between damage per shot and rate of fire. Higher damage can help take down enemies more efficiently.

  2. Reload Speed: A faster reload speed can be crucial during intense combat situations, allowing you to get back into the action quickly.

  3. Capacity: Consider the magazine capacity; a higher capacity means fewer reloads during combat, which can be a lifesaver in tough encounters.

  4. Upgradability: Some handguns can be upgraded for better performance. Check which handguns have the best upgrade paths for damage, fire rate, and capacity.

  5. Special Features: Some handguns may have unique features, such as increased critical hit chances or special ammo types that can enhance their effectiveness.

Recommendation:

  • The Red9 is often considered one of the best handguns in the game due to its high damage output and excellent upgrade potential. It also has a unique stock attachment that increases stability and reduces recoil, making it easier to aim.

  • The Blacktail is another solid choice, offering a good balance of damage, reload speed, and capacity, making it versatile for various situations.

Both options are effective, but the Red9 tends to shine in terms of raw damage and customization potential, making it a favorite among players.
