TL;DR The alternate ending of Titanic is widely considered to be poorly executed and less impactful than the original ending. It involves Rose throwing the diamond overboard in a more dramatic and less subtle manner.
Reception of the Alternate Ending
The alternate ending of Titanic, which features Rose dramatically tossing the diamond into the ocean, has been met with criticism and humor among viewers. Many have described it as resembling a comedic skit, likening it to an SNL sketch due to its over-the-top nature [1:5]. The audience reactions during test screenings favored the simpler, original ending, suggesting that the alternate version did not resonate well
[1:1].
Extended Version and Deleted Scenes
There are discussions about extended versions of Titanic that include deleted scenes, although these do not necessarily feature alternate endings [2:2]. Some fans have expressed interest in seeing a version with all deleted scenes added, particularly those that provide more context or emotional depth to the story
[5:1]
[5:2]. However, concerns about pacing and length are noted, with James Cameron having removed certain scenes to maintain the film's flow
[5:3].
Fan Edits and Speculation
There have been fan edits circulating online that incorporate various deleted scenes, though their quality and coherence are debated [5:7]. Discussions also explore hypothetical scenarios where different plot points could lead to alternate endings, such as the Californian responding to distress flares or the Titanic ramming the iceberg head-on
[2:1].
Cultural Impact and Humor
The alternate ending has become a source of humor and memes within the community, with references to its dramatic nature and comparisons to other cinematic tropes [1:9]
[4:2]. This reflects the cultural impact of Titanic and how its narrative choices continue to inspire creative reinterpretations and discussions.
I’ve watched it like 7 or 8 times now, and still like it.
I would probably like anything titanic related though
THAT REALLY SUCKS LADY!
That is amazing 😂
I know, it’s awful! Does anyone know if this was supposed to be the actual ending scene, or just an alternate/longer scene on the Keldysh?
I think they did test screenings with both endings and the audiences were more receptive to the simpler ending
Like an SNL skit. Just terrible in every way.
I love it that it still has the "ah!" while she throws the diamond
that’s the best part! 😂😂
Oh man, wish this didn't have the alternate ending.
That can be fixed. I have been thinking of making an ultimate edition, adding the "good scenes" and avoiding the "bad" ones like the alternate ending and Jack's fight with Lovejoy.
Jacks fight was good
It explained his face during the split
This is absolute blessing, thank you so much for this! I did try doing this myself about a year ago, but I never finished. Though I've gotta ask, which scenes didn't you include? As the deleted scenes featurette on the BluRay totals 57 minuets, and the movie is 3 hours 14, this isn't a complete cut of it all. By the looks of things. It should be closer to 4 hours 10.
Also, I'd hoped you would remove the Bruce Ismay slander, and it's bit odd to show a scene at sunset, and then cut to a daylight sequence. Anyways I'm nitpicking, but it's just the more that I learn about Mr Ismay, the more of an aversion I have to him being portrayed as an arrogant boss. Yes, he could be sensitive and standoffish, and his sheer height commanded respect to his presence, but he would never demand his ship go faster. To say that he did is literally a lie.
I plan on watching this right up until before the alternate ending begins
lol the ‘lets dance’ ending
'That really sucks, lady.'
Oh, the alternate ending version! Is this the one where the Californian responds to the flairs, or the one where they ram the iceberg head on?
Thank you very much!

I’m not sure if this has been listed before, but I don’t remember seeing it. It’s…..interesting.
Hopefully we get the alternate ending
"A caterpillar turns into a butterfly. If a mindless insect can do it, why can't I? Was it any more unimaginable than the sinking of the Titanic?"
I feel like them sinking the titanic should be equally met with us going to Uranus. Cosmic order and all that jazz.
In one of the weirder anime, the Yamato is raised from the sea bed and refitted to fly thru space.
And then they flew it through an asteroid belt smh.
🤓
Rose literally Diamond handed that shit.
Is it just me but doesn't it to look like he just turned into an Anakin skywalker to throw her off the boat. That's something he would do.
YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE, ROSE
They on a small ass boat bruh
that’s the actual setting
Bruhhhhhh
The Titanic was sinking at the time and he threw her into the water so she wouldn't sink with it.
Now he gets the floating door all to himself
Jack of Wallstreet
Twas her 25th birthday.
Also, would you go see it?
After having viewed the deleted scenes the only one I think must be put back in is the one where Jack and Rose are in the First Class area singing "Come, Josephine, in my flying machine". That brief scene makes the ending scenes so much more poignant
The movie would be too long and the pacing would be awful.
James Cameron didn't delete those scenes because he's an asshole. He deleted those scenes so that the movie would have better pacing.
Yeah he both directed and edited the film (which is uncommon); the cut we see is the cut he wanted us to see. Far be it from me to say I could construct a movie better than he did.
James Cameron is not like George Lucas who has spent the past 48 years editing and changing the original Star Wars trilogy because he's unsatisfied.
Too long for general release but not too long for those of us who'd happily put a Sunday aside to watch it. Releasing an extended cut doesn't mean the original cut no longer exists.
I would add back in:
Wasn't there a fan edit making the rounds on the high seas sites in the 10's that added everything? I remember hearing about it but never had occasion to add it to me booty so idk what the quality was like.
But I swear I remember hearing about it.
Honestly, I think about this somewhat frequently because while I dont think all the deleted scenes should be put back in, I do think there are some that should be.
My pick is the scene where Cal says "Ill still be the first." Its really the only scene that shows the relationship between Rose and Trudy and also gives some more background on why Rose feels trapped. I also pick the scene where Rose trashes her room because without it, the transition from her sitting at the dining room table to running down the deck is very jarring. This makes more sense why she has the impulse to jump off the stern.
A few more: I've gone back and forth with this one, but I ultimately think the scene with Jack and Rose on the deck after the party should have been kept in. It gives a little more to their developing relationship and Rose saying "something I can't have" is powerful. I would also say that I think the short clip of Molly Brown taking over the oar in the boat would be a nice addition to show her strength and heroism. Finally, the extended Carpathia sequence for sure. It definitely provided better closure for the disaster. Oh, I almost forgot, but the Chinese man being rescued. Rose says "six were saved from the water" and it provides some more context.
I just saw this post from r/fan edits where the op added all the deleted scenes to the movie but won’t include the alternate ending because it’s “wildly hated”.
Do people really hate it?
Not knowing that there even was an alternate ending and then watching it I don’t get why so people would hate it. I really liked it a lot more than the original. It had always bothered me that rose dropped the diamond, I always thought that was extremely selfish of her. In the alt, at least she reveals it before she drops it, so presumably with as much funding and tech as bill Paxtons character has, he can likely recover it.
I guess people agree with the sentiment that he’s “looking for treasure in the wrong place”, “only life is precious” and “make each day count”. But that’s bullshit
While I 100% agree life is more precious than gems, that doesn’t mean the gem is worthless just because life’s more important. it’s no different than saying “money can’t buy happiness”. It absolutely fucking can. Money can buy a lot of happiness. If I remember the film correctly Paxton didn’t want the diamond for himself, he wanted the reward for finding it.
And as “make each day count”, dudes doing a job that he’s good at, clearly loves and is unique. He’s navigating subs to the MFing titanic to recover priceless artifacts! How in the hell is that not making his days count? That’s more than most people do in their entire lives. Maybe rose wants to ride horses or fly planes or whatever the fuck, but Paxton might truly find his work fulfilling and life affirming. James Cameron himself does deep sea exploring for the shear unadulterated thrill of it. You’d think he’d have some sympathy for paxtons character.
Idk rose is a selfish old bat tryna hand down life lessons outta school, and Paxton deserves to find that diamond. That’s my two cents. What y’all think?
I certainly don’t “hate” it (why people bring hate/love into subjective opinion generally confuses me) but I do think that the theatrical ending is better, for the following reasons:
WHAT IS THE FUCKING ALTERNATE ENDING
They ran after old Rose when she walked to the end of the ship, thinking she wanted to die. Which would be the logical thought after hearing the story how Jack met Rose (the meeting itself). There, the crew said to Rose to stop. Rose turned around with the diamond in her hand. Bill Paxton (can’t remember his name) walked slowly towards to Rose to try to grab the diamond. Rose let him hold it for a few seconds before she pulls it back out of his hand, flinging the diamond overboard. The crew runs downstairs to try to get the diamond offscreen. Bill breaks out in a fit of laughter, laughing at how insane the situation is. The rest is played like the movie I believe..
Brock Lovett is his character. Paul F. Thompkins does a hilarious parody of him as a treasure hunter who is only interested in "wet treasure."
Jack wakes up. It was all a dream!
That's not a deleted scene though, it's how Inception opens.
Jay and Silent Bob stop the iceberg
Spoilers, geez.
It doesn't have the same emotional payoff as Rose dropping the necklace to the ocean uninterrupted. She at least gets to have a proper goodbye and satisfying ending.
The original ending would be too divisive in my opinion. Test screenings appear to prove it.
While Paxton's character is obsessed and can be a bit of a dick, he didn't do anything to antagonize an old lady. Better let him wallow in disappointment for a while than put him through anguish for the rest of his life.
But why? The original is terrible
Because it's fucking hilarious. "That really sucks lady"
The fact that Rose is an old woman who can't get over about the one night stand she had 70 years ago is weird enough. But the whole, cut to the future and the team on a submarine is looking for this blue crystal necklace she had, makes no sense and destroys the vibe the movie creates.
It makes no sense for two reasons. Titanic is a romantic movie. It creates this atmosphere on a ship in the early 20th century. The world building is a nostalgic trip, the ship, the outfits and the lives of these passengers was beautifully crafted and fits the romantic mode. The story revolves about how Jack changed her unhappy life. But why this plot line with the scientists on a submarine? The atmosphere from romantic past to a ocean documentary about the remaining of the titanic. It's ridiculous that they even let an old nearly 90 years old lady on this submarine. It's like sending Anthony Hopkins to the ISS. It also spoilers the plot that Jack is going to die on this ship.
95% of the movie is a romantic cheesy fever dream and the end is like when the alarm clock starts to ring and waking up to an ocean gate mission.
James Cameron loves submarines. Simple as. It's not a terrible framing device either. Seeing the sunken ship beforehand lends a sense of foreboding that would be less evocative with the simple vague knowledge of the event.
Say what you will of the corny love story, it is super eerie to look at the ruins of the ship and then glimpse back through time at the last days before it met its fate.
Same with the interruption mid movie. It reminds you that this is the memory of a woman in love, not someone who was a victim of the Titanic. She's sharing her love story against the backdrop of the tragedy.
I think with historical events a lot of people forget these are real people who experienced these tragedies, and there's an emotional detachment with how much time has passed. Historical fictions help us see these events through the lense of the people who were there, even if it's not 100% accurate. Is the love story a little corny? Sure, but the point is there COULD have been a Jack and Rose on that ship, and there was enough accuracy in the film to take you through what the experience of all those victims was like. Watching a reenactment will always have a bigger emotional impact than someone regurgitating facts.
Also, like, the movie wouldn't be watchable if there wasn't a story leading up to it sinking. The people had to do something on the boat before the iceberg
Yeah he made this movie so that he could take a sub down there and film the wreck, not the other way around.
You do realize Rose was never in a submarine, right??? The submersible they were sending down to the Titanic was unmanned. She was on a ship on the surface.
Considering how visiting the Titanic in a manned sub has turned out in real life, it seems important that you realize they didn’t shove a 90 year old lady into a submarine and take her to the ocean floor.
Ikr? I don't think OP was really paying attention to the movie. Rose was living it up in a cabin on the surface research vessel. I was scrolling through this post and began to think my memory came unglued and I missed Deep Diving Rose somehow.
There have been manned research vessels that went down and saw Titanic in real life. Oceangate was just someone skirting all policy and common practices in the name of "advancement" without realizing those things were written in blood.
not only research vessels. James Cameron himself did in fact go down to the Titanic. 33 times.
She did move on though, she lived her life. But she’s telling them the story of her time on the ship, which centers Jack.
Uhhh do you forget that the ocean documentary is also how the movie starts? It's called a framing device dude.
Also 90 year old Richard Attenborough recently took a submarine trip to like challenger deep or some shit
Also also, 95% of the movie is a romantic cheesy fever dream? DID YOU BLINK AND MISS THE LITTLE SUBPLOT ABOUT THE HUBRIS OF MAN AND THE UNSTOPPABLE FORCES OF NATURE?!
The resolution of Rose’s storyline is that she finally got closure by returning the necklace to where it belonged, instead of continuing to drag it through her life.
Spoilers!
i think even if people haven't seen this film, they probably know of the titanic sinking.
spoilers would be something like >!jack dying and rose living in the ending.!<
Would be weird having Rose die on the titanic when she's an old lady at the beginning
Actuallyyyy the sinking of titanic was a homage to James Cameron.
spoilers!
i added the spoiler tag since you guys for some reason still believe one of the most referenced and discussed scene in fiction that has been memed upon in pop culture media to the point that it's literal common knowledge at this point is still considered a spoiler to you for some reason.
if we go by this logic, no one should discuss the irl event of titanic sinking without a spoiler tag 🤷.
you may have added a spoiler tag but the title of your post gives it all away :(
Nah never heard of it
Holy shit, the movie is about THAT Titanic??
She's made of iron sir i assure you she can. And she will. It's a mathematical certainty.
Here's an alternate ending to the movie "Titanic" where Jack lives but the ending is still dramatic and loving:
As Rose is floating on the door in the icy ocean, Jack helps her up onto the wooden panel to keep her afloat. They cling to each other, shivering and breathless, as they watch the Titanic sink into the depths below.
As they await rescue, Jack and Rose vow to never let each other go and to cherish every moment they have together. They discuss their future plans and dreams, promising to make them a reality together.
When they are finally rescued, Jack and Rose are taken to New York City where they start a new life together. They find a small apartment in the city and work hard to make ends meet, but they are happy just to be together.
As time passes, Jack and Rose's love only grows stronger. They have children and watch them grow up, never taking a single day for granted. They grow old together, still holding hands and sharing loving glances.
On their 80th wedding anniversary, Jack takes Rose out to dinner at their favorite restaurant. As they sit together, reminiscing about their lives together, Jack suddenly reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small velvet box.
With a trembling hand, he opens the box to reveal a beautiful diamond ring. He looks into Rose's eyes and says, "Rose, my love, I have loved you every day since that fateful night on the Titanic. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife once again?"
Tears stream down Rose's face as she nods her head yes. Jack slides the ring onto her finger, and they kiss as the entire restaurant bursts into applause.
As they leave the restaurant, hand in hand, Jack and Rose know that they have been blessed with a love that will last for all eternity.
Nah. As nice as it would have been for them to live happily ever after, the true visceral impact of the Titanic tragedy is not felt if Jack lives
I didn't understand this when I was young. Now I agree. It makes you feel for all the 1,500 + families that lost their loved ones.
I didn't realize or understand it initially either. Took me a few years and the awful rip off that was "Pearl Harbor" before I realized how good the story works in Titanic.
Movie really doesn't work unless Jack dies
I actually needed this after rewatching last night, so thank you. The older I get the more I don't need characters to die to appreciate a tragedy.
No.
I got the clip from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27lsG3aWDMY
thanks
The fact that she closed her eyes to do it too!! Tragic every time🤣
“That’s what you get for putting your hands on my fiancé”
Honestly, it's better then dying from hypothermia.
If you close your eyes when you swing an axe, you’re gonna have a bad time.
"There were some third class men in the hallway right? Please go grab one of them."
