TL;DR
Hyundai Genesis 3.8
The 2012 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 has been highlighted as an affordable option with plenty of power, offering over 250 hp for under $10k [2:1]. However, there are mixed reviews regarding its reliability. Some users have had positive experiences, noting that it is a solid buy if the pre-purchase inspection checks out
[3:1], while others caution that Hyundai has a reputation for being less reliable compared to brands like Toyota or Honda
[2:5].
Alternative Options
For those concerned about reliability, alternatives such as the V6 Accord, Camry, Avalon, Lexus ES, and Acura TL were suggested [2:2]. These models may be older and have higher mileage, but they are generally considered more reliable than the Genesis. A user also recommended the 2001-2006 Lexus LS 430 as a reliable alternative
[2:3].
Considerations for Purchase
When considering purchasing a used Genesis, it's important to weigh the trade-offs between price, performance, and potential repair costs. While the Genesis offers a good balance of power and affordability, it may not offer the best fuel economy and requires premium fuel [2:8]. Additionally, the cost of repairs can be high, so ensuring a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial
[3:1].
General Advice
In general, when looking for an affordable car, it's important to consider your priorities. If reliability and fuel efficiency are top concerns, you might prioritize models from manufacturers known for these attributes, such as Toyota or Honda. If performance is more important, the Genesis could be a suitable choice if you are willing to accept potential maintenance costs.

The best idea ever!
I’m looking at a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Rwd With 49,000 miles on it for 9K but I’ve seen mixed reviews on reliability. What is your opinion and are there other car options that you guys have in mind?
I would say that's a solid buy. Other options include V6 Accord, Camry, Avalon, Lexus ES, Acura TL. But those will be older and have significantly higher mileage. Depends on luck what type of $$$ you'll spend on repairs vs the Genesis.
Thank you
2001-2006 Lexus LS 430.
V6 accord
That’s not a bad deal for the genesis and the 3.8 has plenty of power
Are they reliable though? I see mixed reviews
Hyundai and reliable are never used positively in the same sentence. Hyundai/Kia has a long reputation of being unreliable
I’d do some research on it before you buy but I think the 3.8 is a decent motor
you won't get good gas mileage, and requires premium on top of that. If you drive it harder, you'll get even worse.
The trinity of cars is cheap, fast, reliable. You usually have to sacrifice at least one for the other two.
I did some google searching on it and from what I’ve heard it’s a fairly reliable engine, obviously won’t be as reliable as Toyota or Honda, but at 44k miles I don’t think you have much to worry about, especially if you don’t drive a lot
For $900 I'd roll the dice , but I wouldn't spend $9000 on it.
Good Cheap Fast, pick two
No accidents or anything are these reliable cars? They are super nice and pretty cheap
They're solid cars. Is it a 3.8 or 4.6? (assuming it's a sedan)
An yes it is the sedan
3.8
It's over 10 years old and closer to 15. There are better ways to waste $9k.
It’s a great way to learn about planned obsolescence
No. This is a bad deal.
Why do you say that??
Yes, provided the pre-purchase inspection checks out. They are expensive to repair, but are very reliable.

I’m looking for the best value under $15k. I travel 300 miles per week between work and home and not much else. Budget is a little flexible, but I’d like to keep it under if I can. Go!
ETA: I’m also looking for something reliable and with good gas mileage. Affordability and reliability are much higher on the priority list than style. I’ll likely only drive it for a couple of years.
Ford Fusion hybrid
Hard to go wrong with a toyota camry. Drive a little less than you and fill up twice a month. Never had a light or any issues.
Nicest Prius or Civic hybrid you can find for your budget?
Hi guys. First time mom and just started looking at strollers and car seats. Everything looks so confusing lol but I decided finally that I want a travel system car seat plus stroller. It would work best for us.
But I’m shocked at some of these prices. Heard a lot of good reviews about Nuna and was so shocked that they are $1000 plus. We really can’t afford that so looking for recommendations for a good travel system under $600.
Any recommendations would be appreciated!
Thank you so much!
We love our Joie Ginger! We got the Ginger LX with the Rue car seat combo, which has a base. They also have an option to pair it with the Mint, which is a baseless car seat. The LX stroller has a few more features but if you wanna save a little bit more you could get the Regular Ginger. They have a few other stroller models that are also worth looking at that are all a little different.
I saw this one, glad to know you liked it. Gonna look into it. Thank you so much!
I like the bravo Trio. It’s kind of heavy and bulky so I got the car seat caddy version used and use that a lot for Quik trips.
Thank you! Going to look into it
The Yoyo2 or Butterfly Travel Stroller are popular for their compact size. They can be used with an infant car seat via adapters.
FWIW, I recently did an analysis on Reddit data for travel strollers. Basically ranked them by aggregated sentiment. Maybe you'll find it helpful https://redditrecs.com/travel-stroller/ You can filter by price, age/weight category, and travel system compatibility and get a breakdown of what ppl have said about the most often recommended ones (disclaimer some links are affiliate they help fund the analyses)
Thank you! Will look into those. That’s a cool analysis, I’ll have to save it.
Chico Corso Le. With Amazon registry completion discount you can get it for 500$
Thank you! Good to know!
You don't need to get a crazy expensive car seat & stroller for it to be good.
Britax is a pretty good brand and is what I got for my son.
If you want a more budget friendly option, Graco is pretty good too.
That’s true. Wow I like this one, it looks very nice. Thank you!

I got an old sedan with a broken alternator that I want to donate to an organization. I know there are plenty out there to donate to. I just want to know what my options are. It would be best if they could come pick it up for me and tow it away.
If you know of any places that take cars and could tow it from culpeper, VA , please tell me in the comments! Thank yall so much
I believe the National Kidney Foundation? accepts junk cars.
Many charitable organizations use the same back end service provider (https://careasy.org/) to handle the actual logistics of getting the car and moving on to the next step (sale, auction, disposal, etc.) So, pick an organization that you'd like to support and there's probably a link on their website to donate your vehicle, or go through the link above.
I donated a car a few years ago using this service and it was all very easy. I know people at the nonprofit that benefitted and they confirmed that a high percentage (80%?) makes it to the nonprofit. I set an appointment, the pickup driver came to me, loaded the vehicle on, gave me a receipt to show it was picked up. Later, when my car did get more than $500 at auction, I was sent a receipt for tax purposes showing the actual amount. (If it's less than $500 you can just deduct $500 with no receipt).
Also, avoid Kars for Kids. Gets very low ratings for the amount that actually gets to the charity.
Better off selling for cheap on Facebook or offer up. Sell it cheap and it will be gone quick. Donate the money or portion if you want. Tax write off isn't what a lot of people think. Plus the charities also get pennies on the dollar unless they process and sell the cars which almost none do.
NPR takes car donations.
I live just outside of Charlottesville and donated my car to the Purple Heart Foundation a few years ago. It was no longer running and they towed it out of our barn. I recommend the careasy.org the other commenter mentioned. It was really easy to arrange!
Thanks so much
Nice!
Pretty cool!
That ridiculous bouncing car...
Agreed, my 2015 sedan is an amazing balance of comfort and performance, plus a lovely interior and very good tech. My only wish is better MPG, but Genesis will have plenty of new EVs (and depreciated GV60s) in the coming years when I'm ready to switch. Korean V6 powertrains are much more reliable than the Audi EA888 (water pumps), Audi V6 (coolant leaks), BMW B48/B58 (all the plastic parts fail), and Mercedes (everything fails lol). Not to mention I love a sleeper and an underdog.
Same here, I have the 2016 htrac 3.8 ultimatetechsig package and it's perfect, fits me very well (6'5") is super comfy and with the pedal commander it really has some spunk when needed. It's light years better than the crappy hondas and camerys and bmws I've driven (that were newer even).
Haven't owned one but have driven multiple and I love them. It is a very traditional approach to a luxury sporty vehicle. Plus people in the real world actually appreciate the car and I loved getting looks from people. German cars could be mistakes for a KIA/Honda/Mazda lol. Inside and out...
I've had people mistake the Genesis badge for a Chrysler 🙄
Couldn't agree more. Had a "car guy" tell me they were all garbage last weekend. Durrr
Guess what? I'm ALSO a car guy since I was a kid in the late 70s/80s and I know a shit ton about ALL cars as well.
My 2013 Genesis 5.0 RSpec V8 just hit 160k. Full synth oil changes every 5k. Still runs and drives like new. I WANT something newer but how can you throw away a car that loves to be driven hard and just keeps on going? Have the nut ready for the next one but can't part with her. Mine had a powertrain warranty til 160k/2026 that just ran out. Never had to use it. Bought it for $11k!! right after covid started with 100k miles on it.
Wife just got a 2022 GV70 3.5t AWD Sport Prestige with every option. It's blowing my mind and might have to replace mine with one. We got a lifetime power train warranty, the 24k remainder of the factory bumper to bumper, and a crazy after market warranty that covers EVERYTHING for another 100k/6 years.
You'll need the warranty. I love driving my 2022 GV70 3.5T SP...but I've already had a ton of issues with it and I'm still under 60k miles.
Steering column problems Transfer case replacement Software issues Lane centering sensor problems Interior fit/finish - plastic creaking
It's been into the dealership for repairs at least twice a year since I've owned it.
Not a great look.
That being said, I really enjoy driving the car....it's just not reliable.
So glad to hear. They are really incredible cars. You'll love the new G80
Love our GV80 Prestige. I want for no other ride.
Love may GV80 as well! However, I’m a pretty petite woman, and think I’d like the GV70 next, as the GV80 is pretty large for me, even though I love the roominess. Or… I also really like the Hyundai Tucson. Genesis is no longer associated with Hyundai, or at least that’s what I’ve been reading (and the sales manager at the dealership passed that along) they really want to build their own Genesis brand/dealerships. I think the service issues are in part due to the split before they had actual separate dealerships built and ready to go. Why some people believe Hyundais are cheaply built autos, I’ll never understand. Before my Genesis, I owned two Santa Fe’s and loved both of them. I liked them better than my previous Toyotas. So… when people cut down Hyundai’s, they surely have never owned one!
I really do LOVE THE GV80 but if I had a choice, I’d want tires that are much thicker, as the larger thinner sport tires on mine, seem to have me feeling every bump in the road. The vehicle is super quiet (which was a big selling point with my husband) but if possible, I want my next one to have the tires I want. If that’s not possible, I’ll probably get the Tucson hybrid, and wait and see what Genesis comes out with next. Or, maybe try the GV60?
And, doesn’t really matter what car, or brand one decides to purchase these days, they all cost so much more than I had ever expected, since I usually keep my vehicles 10 or more years, and hadn’t had to purchase a new vehicle in ten years, so sticker shock hit big time!
What convinced me to purchase the GV80 over a Mercedes or BMW, was the incredible three year free oil changes and connected services! I think Toyota finally caught on, and is now giving two years of the same kind of deal, but I’m not 100% on that, so don’t chastise me if I’m wrong.
Bottom line, if you’re wondering about these new, awesome technology loaded Genesis vehicles, go out and test drive one. You might just fall in love like the rest of us!!
I have a '12 Equus. Both have the 13ch 17 speaker Lexicon system. It's underpowered in my opinion. Currently looking into fully replacing all speakers + adding CarPlay.
I love my g90 Looks and comfortable ride until the wheels fall off F a Hater
There was a recall on the battery cable that has a huge fuse box on it for 17 speaker Lexicon surround. If it goes bad and the recall hasn't been done, it will eat batteries like tic-tacs, and send you to the shop many times. That's the only gotcha. Otherwise, great car.
Estoy buscando autos buenos bonitos y baratos.
