TL;DR
The Jaguar XE and XF models are considered affordable options within the Jaguar lineup, offering a balance of luxury and performance without the high price tag associated with other luxury brands. Used Jaguars can also provide great value due to rapid depreciation [2:2].
Jaguar's Market Position
Jaguar is often compared to brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi rather than ultra-luxury brands like Bentley or Aston Martin [2:1]
[2:3]. While Jaguars may not be cheaper than all BMW models, they offer competitive pricing in their class. The Jaguar XF, for example, is comparable to the BMW 5 Series, while the Jaguar XE competes with the BMW 3 Series
[2:6]
[2:8].
Affordable Models
The Jaguar XE and XF are popular choices for those seeking an affordable luxury vehicle. These models provide a good mix of performance and style at a lower cost compared to some competitors. The F-Pace and E-Pace SUVs have been among Jaguar's best-selling models, providing practical options for those looking for a luxury SUV [5:1]
[5:4].
Depreciation and Used Options
Jaguars tend to depreciate rapidly, especially in the US market, which means that used Jaguars can be a great value if properly maintained [2:2]. This depreciation allows buyers to access luxury features at a more affordable price point.
Unique Appeal
Despite not being the most technologically advanced or reliable compared to some rivals, Jaguars have a unique appeal due to their design and driving experience. The F-Type, for instance, is praised for its stunning looks and exhilarating performance [4:6]
[4:10]. For many owners, the distinctiveness and aesthetic appeal of Jaguar vehicles are worth the investment
[4:7].
My personal take
I'd argue it would have to be their sports cars from the late '40s until the late '60s. From XK120 up to the E-type they consistently delivered incredibly capable, fast and good looking cars at prices vastly below their direct competitors. As much as I like their later cars, they never hit that same competitive advantage again.
The XK was also an amazing engine. One of the few that is both reliable and British.
There’s more reliable ones, but this is one of the few that is also relatively powerful as well.
XJ with 2.7 diesel
Did jaaaaaag ever make a v8 diesel variant
Unfortunately, Jaguar got the cuck chair, and the V8 diesel was Land Rover only.
a older Riced X-Type with rusted bumpers
The bumpers (and grille) on an X-Type are made of plastic, they cannot rust. The worst rust points are the sills, which have plastic covers that hide the rust.
On a side note, I take it the very specific X-Type you're imagining is beige or "2000s silvery blue" with manual cloth seats, 16 inch steel wheels, keep-fit rear windows, no options, and the 2.0 diesel?
Gr.1? You mean that’s raceable alongside group c in Gran Turismo?
Best jaguar is the Marine
come to think of it. jag is a lot cheaper than those with the likes of bentley, aston, bmw etc. what may be the reasons for this? need facts and knowledges abt this. thanks!
tyia for enlightening me
In the US Jaguars often depreciate quite rapidly, even more than Mercedes and on par with some BMW models. That being said, used Jags are often a great value for the money provided they have been properly maintained.
Bentley, Aston, Ferrari etc are top tier.
Jaguar is a competitor of Lexus, BMW, MB, Audi, Cadillac etc. Jags are not cheaper than BMWs, lol. Depends on the model, drivetrain etc.
I don’t think you can compare a Jag to a Bentley or Aston. They’re in a different level of luxury. This discussion is from a few years ago but I think it’s still valid now.
I tend to think of Jags as being on the same tier as a BMW or Merc. You actually listed BMW in the things you said a Jag is cheaper than. Is a Jag really cheaper than a BMW? In the UK, Jaguar XF starts at £35,100, BMW 3 Series starts at £37,805. I’d say they’re close enough as to not make a difference once you start adding options on? Edit: several people have replied saying an XF should be compared to a 5 series, not a 3 series. That would make the BMW a little more expensive than the Jag.
so jag is same tier with benz? that means porsche too? but aint them more expensive than jag? what makes them more expensive if u dont mind me asking?
With regard to Porsche, it depends on which one you are comparing. For example, I have a 2021 F-Type R convertible. It cost a lot more than a 718 Boxster and a little bit less than a base 911 Carrera or Carrera 4 convertible. Higher spec 911’s cost way more. The 911 is a better sports car than the Jag, but they are really different types of cars. The F-Type is a far better looking machine with an exhilarating amount of power and an awesome engine soundtrack.
No Porsche is it’s own thing, closer to Aston. What can you afford and what do you like. That’s all that matters
I’m, an XF is equivalent to a 5 series, not a 3 series.
Does that change your mind?
Shouldn’t you be comparing XF with 5 series, and XE with 3 series?
I'd say an XF should be compared to a 5-series and an XE to a 3-series actually
Have you looked back at the 70's and 80's, there's a big electric smear on its reputation.
The ghost of Lucas still haunts us
It's not perfect and the miles are not super low, but this car has my name written all over it. What a sexy monster...
Congrats! You’ll love every minute of driving it. Just take care of the coolant pipes before they fail
Way to go, SilverFox, very nice!!
I’m jealous…
Sweet
Bravo, a lovely car!
I don't understand Jaguar's appeal. They are not the most sophisticated and cutting-edge in terms of technology, and engineering. German rivals usually offer a better driving experience. Reliability-wise, Japanese luxury brands would be leagues ahead...So who are Jaguar selling their luxury products to?
Jaguar owner here. As someone noted, they aren't selling cars anymore. Moving to EVs.
I got into Jaguars due to good experience with Range Rovers; which uses the same stout reliable AMV8 block.
I've owned numerous Range Rovers/Land Rovers in excess of 100k miles and long term ownership.
That V8 is pretty much bullet proof. The transmission is ZF-8. Again pretty stout. The electronics can be iffy and other things. Knock on wood, I have not had any problems except when due to low voltage (time to replace batteries).
What drew me to Jaguars? The super charged v8. When it first was shown in S-Type Type R (ugly car). Then the XF-R, XJ-Rs. Basically all the Type Rs are awesome.
So I have a 550 HP, F-Type R. It does 0-60 in 3.8 seconds. It can reach 198 MPH with P-Zero trires. Is as good handling as a Porsche 911 Carrera S? No, but it has a throaty v8. Google any video or article about the exhaust. It is legendary. Here is one: https://www.jalopnik.com/the-jaguar-f-type-r-coupe-is-a-spectacle-for-everyone-b-1783677469/
And again, hear it in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx6sA-q7fUs and another: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvrxil7KpJU
and this one: https://youtu.be/nPkpntQOn5U?t=152
What do they all say? One of the best sounding car in the world. "So obnoxious" sounding.
I can't even explain how it feels. Very hard to describe that visceral feeling and pumping of adrenaline.
And quite simply, the F-Type is one of the most gorgeous cars ever design. It is a neck turner and stunning. Even after 8 years of ownership.
My first exposure to this was with a 2013 XF-R in that loud Jaguar blue. The first time i drove it, it literally pushed me back to the seat.
So I have a high revving, loud supercharged V8 that I will never let go of. With the transition to electrification, I'll keep this brutish beast of a car indefinitely.
The looks of the car are fantastic, and it's on the list of possible play cars in my future. I'm actually considering the V6 because I love the way that Jaguar V6 sounds and for public roads, it's still plenty fun.
I'm not looking to impress anyone but myself, and that's also why I drove an rx8 for a decade regardless of what anyone wanted to say about it lol
Saw one in person at my local Volvo/Jaguar dealer. My jaw was on the floor. So sexy.
>the F-Type is one of the most gorgeous cars ever design. It is a neck turner and stunning.
Hard agree. It has some timeless curves and styling that are just chefs kiss. Happy for you that you get to drive and enjoy it since I'll never get the chance.
RR sells much better than Jaguar though. I see plenty of rich housewives in RRs but Jaguars in general are rarer.
Age is a factor. For a very long time (like from the 50's until probably 10-15 years ago) Jags were highly desirable cars for people who had enough $$$ to insulate themselves from any reliability issues and wanted a car with a great engine paired with a softer ride and better looks than any of the competing Germans.
I'm old enough that when I hear the word Jag the image that pops into my head is gorgeous car with a great engine---that will be extremely unreliable and expensive to fix. And really if you only kept them 2-3 years you probably didn't have to deal with the reliability issues, it usually takes even British electronics that long to corrode enough to start to sperg out.
Bought an F-Type because they are different, and not too many of them around. Do I get another corvette that every boomer owns? Or something a bit more unique? Been a great reliable summer/weekend car. So good that I’m going to purchase an F-Pace SVR so I can enjoy driving just as much in the winter months.
I wish f/epace was the turning point for jag. Such a great looking car
Nobody
Jaguar stopped production of gas cars in 2024
They claim they plan to sell EVs in the future
I bought an F Type just because it was different. Really enjoyed it for a few years, had no real problems. They’re fantastic cars and I frankly miss it.
Isn't Waymo recently made a partnership deal with Toyota?
I tested Waymo in San-Francisco last year and I did like Jags, but that tells very little from the ownership perspective.
Have you ever said Jaguar in your head with an English accent? Luxurious
Both the xf and the f-type is one of the most beautiful cars out there, and f-pace is peak suv. What are we talking about here.
Don’t think you understand what OP is getting at. In comparison the Land Rover / Range Rover , Jaguar hasn’t been given the same type of support the main cash cow has
Maybe. It bothers me that my ipace doesn't get any new functions or refreshes in the infotainment. I mean it is the same basic systems in both lr and jaguar. I dont get why it has to be unique for each car model and year.
Yea they really haven’t shown much love to Jaguar and their own god damn cars
Yea, Land Rover is their automotive cash cow
Which shocked me because as a tech landrover is the worst for part, had a recent rover in that needed an engine swap after 60,000 miles and they send us a brand new engine was shattered, which is ridiculous and the customer was just fuming
E-Pace introduced in 2017. I-Pace in 2018. Otherwise, yeah :(
That probably tells you everything you need to know - generic brains thinking the market really wants Jaguar to make utterly forgettable SUVs, then discovering that in fact nobody wants a Jaguar branded high CofG overweight jellymould generic mum mobile.
At least the recent models were more reliable than the older stuff 🤷🏻♂️ never had issues with any of them, and I abuse cars.
The F-Pace & E-Pace were Jaguars best selling models by an aboslute mile.
So yes, generic brain was completely right. Y'know, given company exist to make money.
E-Pace was pretty cheap to develop because it was based of NFE-D8 Evoque and Disco Sport. F-Pace took the cost of XE and 60% of the dev cost of RR Velar.
I only recalled them, cause I've had both hah. F-Type is my true baby though.
Because they are totally overhauling the brand. It takes time to design and manufacture new car lines. Especially when you go from what they were building to what is coming next.
I mean a classic e-type is arguably the best looking jag ever and one of the best looking cars ever
I prefer the gen 3 over the original e type and I also find types of the coupe strange looking, the roadster is beautiful though
The roaster is great; the coupe is amazing in 2015
For sure, s3 ots on steel wheels ftw!
I own a F Type R, but the E-Type is my future old man drive around town on the weekend retirement car. It's beautiful.
As a former F-Type owner who is also biased, I’m gonna have to disagree with you this one
It’s kind of cheating, because only a few hundred were made, but this is the correct answer. My favorite supercar design of all time.
I might be biased too, I think the XKR is the best looking modern-day Jaguar.
Unlike the e type I’m not sure how good it looks as a convertible
We love the looks of our XKR-S, an absolutely beautiful car, moving sculpture!
That is an awesome looking car
Always look back at my F-Type after I park it. That’s the measure of a car’s beauty
Now clearly not a great first car due to repair costs and such, but it was low mileage, a great deal, and had many key repairs done recently that I would have been worried about. Also, at the price point, I have a nice fund for future issues when they occur. I’m loving it so much! 2000 XK8
Super car in its day, change all fluids and watch the coolant lines. Go to Jaguar forums to get real info on your ride
Thank you!
Second this suggestion, JaguarForums.com is the best source for info I've found. Here is a link to your model's forum https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/
So one thing to be aware of…I have one of these, and it also encounter the notorious green shower of death… What that means is the top unless the prior owner changed it out is going to fail on you. I had to put a new hydraulic cables And I went ahead and put a new pistons as well. The overall cost of that was right around 2000.00 but I got really good hydraulic cables out of think it was Washington state or maybe Oregon… Anyway, I had a jag dealership put them in but they were so impressed with these cables that they wanted to know where I bought them from so they could use them as well
Good news is there is a manual override for your locking mechanism which is where notoriously blows there’s a little cap up there at the top above the mirror, there’s a little plug you pull out then a big Allen wrench should be in your glove compartment box. If not, my suggestion is you go get one that fits… But that’s the only issue I’ve had out of this car in March 2001.
Let me know if you need me to dig out the name of that company where I bought the hydraulics from… They were awesome to deal with
Thank you for sharing this. I did buy it aware that the roof is going to fail soon. I’d love to know the companies name!
Found it…tophydraulics.com in Oregon
another note… Until I was able to find the correct cables and stuff that I needed I also did a workaround where I manually open and close the latch while the top still was able to work and so with the windows and I had to buy special cap to put on the hydraulic pump after I took off the old hose, but I’m not sure I can find that anymore… But I’ll look around and see if I can
let me see if I can dig out the name of that company… It may take me a couple of days to find it since I’m hopeful we will never have to use it again 😊
Ah, yes. The brave pill. Well done!
Thank you! I’m loving it so much
Bollocks to expense what a first car! I had a 4 speed vauxhall nova hahaha
I did all cables and the pistons to be on safe side
I was always under the impression that these are mad expensive cars to buy but there’s golfs down in the years priced more than this. Is there something too good to be true about them? Or were they never the sports car I thought they were? It’s worth mentioning I know very little about cars.
I know nothing about cars but I know - No Eco-boost, no Range Rover, no ingenium jaguar. Missing anything?
No Chrysler
Mazda's 2.2 diesel.
Any mazda diesel. They're not mazda built and it shows.
PureTech - Peugeot
Not only Peugeot, 1.2 puretch and 1.5 blue hdi is on all stellantis cars… they put a chain on the hybrid, still have shit lot of issues
parents have been driving a V70 with that 1.6 ecoboost for years. probably the best car i've ever been in or driven by some margin.
Yeah I’m broke because I don’t want to be spending what a shitbox is worth on maintenance every year, good man
Jaguar and Land rover are the ultimate adventure cars! Every morning is an adventure! Will the car start? Will it get to work? Will the check engine light go away?
Was an adventure I was almost willing to pay for
None of its true. If you dig a little deeper, the faults with these two brands are gross negligence of the maintenance required of them (luxury vehicles, after all). Can't run a $100k car on a Toyota budget.
Are there issues? Yes. The timing chain guides had a problem in the earlier years, that were later corrected. Minor electrical gremlins that don't usually stop you from getting home. But, well maintained, they are as reliable as any other brand.
Toyota has issues currently with their Tacoma engines blowing up. Other models have transmission issues. There are dozens of recalls for many different Toyota and Honda models, but their legacy makes people think they are still the utmost reliable and perfect vehicles.
Cheap ≠ affordable
I’ll try to keep this short, but I was essentially born a car enthusiast with my father working in the auto industry his whole life. I’ve since followed in his footsteps. About a month ago, I wanted to add to my little fleet of cars and decided to search for a nice, low like S-Type R. Sure enough, on day one of my search I found one.
I’ve had the Jag for about a month now. After splurging and putting 750 miles on the car, I find myself loving it more and more. It’s fast, it’s comfortable and suits all my needs as the occasional daily driver or date night car. My other two cars are a R56 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works with light bolt ons and a tune as well as a H/C/I C6 Z06. I wanted to add something fun, refined, and quiet to my collection which I certainly think I have done.
As of now, this has been one of my favorite vehicles I’ve owned to date and plan on keeping it for as long as I have garage space for it. I believe this is such a forgotten about car, it’s a shame you don’t see too many of these in good shape anymore. Zero regrets and extremely happy with my purchase.
Got the only color a Jaguar should be!!
Beautiful spec! I have an 03 STR in black.an absolute joy to drive at any speed despite needing some work.
I recommend looking out for any oil leaks by removing the under-engine cover. Mine disguised a big leak for some time. It ended up just being my valve cover & spark plug seals ($80 replacement parts from Mahle).
Probably the most expensive maintenance part that is likely to give you issues are the shocks (assuming you have the electronic ones) bleeding over time & control arms. Everything else has been really strong. Also don't touch the transmission fluid unless it starts giving you problems & if you need to change it, only use Lifeguard 6 from ZF.
Other than that, enjoy!! They're awesome cars.
🤘❤️
This is a lovely looking car, I also have an S Type but not the R
I know a guy who, in the early 2000's, bought a used Mercedes Diesel... an 80's model. He almost literally got it for a song (it cost him a small performance and $400), as he busked for a living. He tore the front passenger seat out so his big dog was comfortable, and drove the thing cross country from Florida to Oregon, running it on filtered used fryer oil he'd barter/trade/busk for along the way from restaurants and bars.
What's the point? You can turn any vehicle into somewhere comfortable to live. Just look at r/priusdwellers if you want to see what can be done with limited space. And if it is comfortable enough, you can do long term.
I once bought a used Ford E-250 that had previously been an HVAC truck. There was a wall of really small shelves on the driver's side, made of angle iron and 9/16" bolts and nuts. I disassembled the shelves, and used the angle iron to build a bed frame, bigger deeper shelves, and storage above and below the bed... and the bed surface was made up of a square maple dining table that I could pull out of the shelves and attach the legs to when I needed. Outside the van, of course. I bought it in 2006 for $300, and I lived in it for just shy of 3 years.
The vehicle that fits your budget and lifestyle, is the best budget vehicle. Seriously. Your budget is different from mine. If you are living in a vehicle because you'd be in a tent on the streets otherwise, then some used beater that runs ends up being the best budget vehicle. If you are tired of the rent rat race, and you can't get into the inflated property prices and taxes... but you have a job that would not suffer if you lived in a vehicle... then maybe purchasing a van that has already had a conversion done is in your budget... something brand new with warranties and service plans, etc. Maybe you can afford a diesel/electric hybrid that will allow you an incredible range, with the addition of solar panels, for just a pittance towards fuel costs.
Thank you.
I mean... I'd like to say "Go buy this model"... but it really is an individual thing.
If you are really urban, then space is an issue. Some big van really won't cut it. If the size of the vehicle isn't as important, there are other factors. If you need to blend in more, then a vehicle that isn't all windows is better than one which does have a ton of glass. Covering or painting glass from the inside of a car, SUV, or pickup actually attracts attention, as it looks like something that isn't normally covered up. But... some beat-up old cable installation van that has a big window on the passenger side... that's something you could cover with paint without attracting too much attention. You can even get away with painting the rear windows of a van, if you have large enough mirrors on either side.
If you do need something better for a daily drive, and to get you into and out of metro areas.. then something with heavily tinted windows is better than covered from the inside... but then that gets into local laws, and whether or not your local cops are on the lookout to hand out tinting tickets. If you are urban, you might want the space offered in a Volvo wagon, or even a Subaru. If you have the ability to load and unload your stuff somewhere, then making use of a good, solid sedan might be in the budget, to make things like Uber/Lyft/Doordash easier. Again... it is all individual. For how you want to live... your ideal might be a full sized van, or a minivan, or a wagon, or a sedan, or some little electric beauty since your City offers free electric car charging.
EDIT: And if you want to make use of things like solar... that alters which vehicle you'd choose, or your lifestyle. I mean... you *could* get up every morning and set out panels next to your car. Or... you could drive something with a flat roof rack that would allow you to install panels on it... and FYI, you can generate some good electricity sitting under the lights at a Walmart parkinglot.
Minivans are cheap and spacious.
Older japanese suvs have reliable engines and can traverse forest roads
Hybrids are cheap on gas and the prius at least allows you to run the engine all night without it draining the battery OR running the engine constantly.
"budget" and "live in" mean different things to different people. Are you talking a thousand dollars or 10 thousand? Stealth in the city or boondocking? Driving around the country or staying close to a long-term job? Pets or partners? The best vehicle for one person would work awfully for another...
[edit: personally I loooove my honda element, can't not mention my box. But the mpg is horrible lol. Lots of room, back seats come out easily, and the awd is perfect for backwoods living. Older crvs and rav-4s (and 4runners) are similar, in both the good and the bad]
I never thought my question was so loaded. I'm just trying to live comfortably on a budget without having to worry about rent. I could totally stay with Toyota but I realized my Corolla has a small drivers seat and would not be comfortable to sleep in.
never said your question was loaded.. i wasn't trying to be rude lol, just giving a broad answer to a broad question....
Anything Toyota.
I'm a fan of Toyota as well. I did think I could find more answers about advantages to certain cars though.
early toyota sienna
I left it open to whatever you can find in your budget. Then there are you tubers that are living in about everything they make for you to fine tune your needs.

> What is the best budget vehicle to live in long term?
The paid-off and well-maintained vehicle you already own.
best affordable jaguar vehicle
Key Considerations for Affordable Jaguar Vehicles
Model Selection: Look for entry-level models like the Jaguar XE or Jaguar E-PACE, which are generally more affordable than larger or more luxurious models.
Used vs. New: Consider purchasing a certified pre-owned Jaguar. This can significantly reduce costs while still providing a warranty and quality assurance.
Maintenance Costs: Jaguars can have higher maintenance and repair costs compared to other brands, so factor this into your budget.
Fuel Efficiency: Check the fuel economy ratings, as some models may offer better efficiency, which can save you money in the long run.
Features and Trim Levels: Evaluate the features you need. Sometimes, opting for a lower trim level can save money while still providing essential features.
Recommendation: The Jaguar XE is often regarded as one of the best affordable options in the Jaguar lineup. It offers a blend of performance, luxury, and technology at a relatively lower price point compared to other models. If you're considering a used vehicle, look for models from recent years to benefit from updated features and reliability.
