United Airlines
United Airlines has received positive feedback from some passengers regarding their customer service. Travelers have reported experiences such as free upgrades, accommodating family seating, and helpful responses during flight delays [1]. However, opinions vary significantly, with some individuals expressing dissatisfaction due to unresolved issues like refunds
[1:5]. This suggests that while United can offer excellent service, experiences may differ based on individual circumstances.
Delta Airlines
Delta is frequently praised for its friendly staff and efficient service, ensuring timely departures [2:1]. Their consistent approach to customer care has earned them a reputation for reliability among passengers. The emphasis on maintaining a positive atmosphere and helping passengers get seated quickly contributes to their favorable reviews.
Emirates Airlines
Emirates stands out for its exceptional customer service, often described as "amazing" by travelers [2:2]
[2:4]. Passengers appreciate the high level of attention and care provided by the airline's crew, which contributes to a luxurious flying experience. Emirates' commitment to service excellence is reflected in its global recognition as one of the top airlines.
Singapore Airlines
Singapore Airlines is renowned for treating passengers with warmth and friendliness, making them feel valued whether they are frequent flyers or not [3]. The airline's dedication to providing wide seats and attentive service enhances the overall travel experience. Singapore Airlines consistently receives accolades for its superior customer service.
Challenges in Airline Customer Service
Despite positive reviews for certain airlines, there is a general sentiment that airline customer service is declining. Many passengers express frustration over the lack of direct communication channels, such as phone support, and the reliance on generic email responses [5]. Some believe that cost-cutting measures have led to outsourcing customer service, affecting the quality of interactions
[5:4]. While status perks can provide access to more responsive service, the overall trend indicates a need for improvement across the industry.
united honestly has the best customer service i've ever encountered. i've been flying united consistently over the last 3 years and their customer service never fails to disappoint. whether it's free upgrades to economy plus, matching saver award redemptions, guaranteeing family seating in basic economy, or going above and beyond when flights are delayed. i've always had a pleasant experience with them and i don't even have status.
Like most things, one's experiences can vary wildly from another person's experiences.
I had the absolute worst customer service experience with the Pre-merger UA and I have experienced great customer service since then.
Found Kirby's burner.
Kidding! Despite all the complaining I see here, United's treated me very well the past 15 years or so.
Yet you say, "their customer service never fails to disappoint." Maybe go back and read carefully what you wrote.
BULLSHIT. ITS BEEN OVER A YEAR AND I HAVENT GOTEN MY REFUND THEY ALREADY APPROVED.
AND DISCRIMINATING THAT I DONT HAVE MY ORGINIAL FORM OF PAYMENT SO I CANT GET MY REFUND.
United has the best crews/customer service agents.
Emirates… their level of customer service was absolutely amazing.
It's not for nothing that Emirates is the best.
The one flight from Chi to UK that was dang near empty and I got to lay down across 4 seats and alert the whole way. I know that’s not about service, but they didn’t wake me up, if that counts!
Upgraded to first class.
Oooh, that happened to me in bc’95. That was amazing! They double booked our four seats and the people in the seats refused to move. We got out in 1st class, and man, was the wife piiiiised!!
Landing properly!!!
Delta! Staff is always friendly with greetings and happy to help people get seated so flights left on time
Singapore airlines, Johannesburg to Singapore on A350. Really wide seats and probably one of the the best service out there; i mean this crew treated me as if i was a friend or a frequent flyer. Really nice to see these days. Shared my full experience here:https://youtu.be/IiQOrgtxWyk?si=S9wQ1VFpziWeCeDX

Customer care person in every company seems to be untrained and dumb
We really need to go back to being able to actually call customer service instead of sending an email and getting a generalized "sorry for your bad experience we'll do better next time." I had an awful experience with a counter agent in MCO that I'm sure will go nowhere but its just not satisfying having an email exchange.
Maybe its just me but I feel like airline customer service agents across the board are indifferent, irritable and outright hostile sometimes. I don't want free miles or an apology I'd like to feel like traveling isnt always going to be insanely stressful because every airline employee acts like passengers are annoyances they can treat like dirt.
Will you agree to pay 25% more? They will use that money to hire, train and pay better customer support agents. No, you won't, you want the cheapest fare to go from point A to point B. Thus you get the cheapest service that the airline can provide for the razor thin margins.
Cue up the downvotes.
Such BS. Capitalist bootlicker.
It's wild to me that the biggest perk of status is being able to get a real person to answer your call.
I for sure enjoy the EP line when there are travel issues, but they’ll just direct you to a contact page for an issue like this.
I’m just PP and during a major disruption in DFW earlier this year, AA accidentally sent me the number to the CK line. I didn’t ask for it and I was a bit flabbergasted when they answered straight away, I almost wanted to hang up, but didn’t because I’d been standing in line in the Flagship lounge for over an hour. They helped me so efficiently and I made to Hong Kong only 5 hours later than planned.
Customer service is going down hill. Friend of mine worked within the CS department and when there was a change of CEOs, which in turn led to them turning the CS to a call center in India. I’m so tired of calling a US Based company or using their chat and getting someone in Cebu city or Delhi….
I talk to the exec plat desk all the time and they are always super helpful
Send a response with something like "This generic response in no way addressed my actual complaint. Can you tell me..." and you'll get a real person to answer. It may still go nowhere, but that's how it actually gets read.
Porter seems to be drawing the least complaints. I’ve never flown with them but genuinely curious about opinions about them. Keep in mind, I am usually in Business class with AC and have access to concierge so it’s hard to beat that.
I’m genuinely surprised how United and Delta are so low. I’ve seen the united agents sizing carry on bags, weighing them, they encourage you to use digital boarding passes (I prefer the printed ones) and even when they print it, it’s that cheap receipt paper style. The only compliment I have for United in general is the Polaris lounges that are top notch - but even those, the services is mediocre.
I’ve had over 450+ star alliance flights in the last 4 years and can say Air Canada is the best airline in North America from all aspects (Check in process, hard-stock printed boarding passes, no weight limits on carry-on bag, delay compensation, the concierge service, lounges (especially the signatures suites), accessibility to staff on the phone, the rewards program, etc.). I know many will have had bad anecdotal experience with Air Canada (I’ve had my share) but after flying so much, it’s helped to see beyond the isolated incidents.
I'm surprised by how high Etihad, Qatar and Turkish were, and how low Delta was.
From my experience the middle east airlines have great onboard product but if anything goes wrong or you need to refund it’s quite a hassle. Despite their reputation I think AC and US big 3 actually have some of the best IRROPS handling
Delta is probably my top airline in general service.
lol Delta is the one airline I still have a active case open with 😂 LH and BA both paid out properly
There are two faces of ME Carriers: The in-flight experience face, and the customer service face.
The in-flight experience face (flight attendants, meal service, in-flight entertainment, amenities) are almost always better than any other airlines, and on-par with East Asian carriers. This is regardless of class, and the positive experience is often what you hear from reviewers and for typical travelers if their experience is smooth.
The customer service face (in-person issues with missed connecting flight, delays, cancellations, special requests) is the most demoralizing characteristic of ME Carriers- they make it inconvenient and a hassle to resolve problems. Every phone call is basically a shouting match with a South Asian agent who also probably hate their job and make it known- and maybe you hope that it is a minor problem for him to handle. Or else you are faced with that problem head-on.
When flying with ME Carriers, you pray that it is smooth sailing.
Like I said elsewhere, I've flow with all three of them. And even when there were issues they all handled it well, especially Turkish.
On the other hand I've had Delta lose a bag and then blame me for having a black suitcase like everyone else's and then refuse to pay the compensation in the tarrifs until a DOT complaint was made.
Whaatttt? Middle Eastern Airlines are known for horrible customer service outside the plane and lounges.
Especially Turkish
Porter is crazy low considering their cancellations and on time performance.
Are they paying for delays right away and not playing games ?
I know they gave my sister a 400$ voucher as soon as her flight was 3 hours delayed. Perhaps they give vouchers to discourage people from applying for $ compensation.
I’ve taken Porter a couple times where there have been issues. It’s no different from air Canada or west jet.
Do they have more cancellations than others ? I’ve been in delays ((2-6 hours). Never a cancellation
Porter probably forced AC and WS to become better! AC now gives out beer and wine, and free wifi is coming!
Anyways:
According to OAG December 2024
AC is at 61.71% OTP and 2.68% cancellations.
Porter is at 53.83% OTP and 3.36% cancellation.
Flair OTP is 61.25%, WS OTP 66.
So I mean, all Canadian airlines did poorly in December, but Porter did really bad.
Maybe the chart OP posted shows Porter doing well because they only really started operations in February 2023. Edit: jet operations I mean
Porter also has much smaller airplanes than most other airlines, on average. So per plane it may be smaller number of complaints, what is misleading. It should have been calculated per passenger instead.
Porter is better with communication and being proactive with situations. I speculate that they deal with more regular fliers who know how things go and are less likely to complain.
Travel+Leisure releases its report, and guess who is #1? Hint: NOT AA.
"JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest each ranked highest in overall customer satisfaction in the recently released J.D. Power 2025 North America Airline Satisfaction Study."
"On the opposite end in the economy category, Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines, WestJet, Air Canada, and American Airlines ranked in the bottom five."
They must have collected their dataset before the big announcement. Southworst about to plummet to the bottom.
Fr though, they must be surveying inexperienced fliers. Every frequent flier I know is happy with AA. I feel they are doing better than years’ past on caring for people on life’s journey. The normal DFW issues that happen every spring notwithstanding. At least DFW ain’t EWR.
I am a frequent flier and AA has the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. From desk agents to flight attendants, 90% of them are incredibly rude.
This is it, 100%. American Airlines is the largest carrier and has the most routes. As a result, they carry the most people. Those people often have very little travel experience.
I have held status with American for a long time now, but occasionally, I check out the other big two and they are not any better, or worse.
I’ve traveled a bit, but always on AA or SW and occasionally delays happen. I got a new job that requires travel and I was flying out of Atlanta, best option for me at the time was Delta. My boss was going on about delta being great and every time he flies American there are delays etc. It was my first experience with delta and it was pretty much exactly the same as American, even had a 30 minute delay because the incoming flight was late.
This is not true. It’s not worth the poor route selection 9/10 times, but delta is a better airline. Hands down. Status isn’t as valuable there, but the ops and PaxEx both blow AA out of the water.
Once you learn how to use AA, it’s AAwesome. Most people just don’t fly frequently enough to care to learn how to use AA. They buy a basic economy ticket off Expedia or Priceline (nevermind the fact that AA has, by far, the least draconian BE product) and expect Emirates.
Agree, I’ve been with AA 23 years and I really can’t understand the results of these surveys. It’s garbage. AA takes me anywhere I go and I rarely have issues, rarely, and if I do I suck it up cause I don’t take anything for granted knowing what a sh-show running an airline can be. People need to adjust to reality and coherence.
Remember crowd strike last year ? Delta still came in way ahead of AA, I don’t the think what’s going on at EWR is rally going to affect United and I would still take them over AA especially if I have somewhere important to be.
I am a frequent flier with AA and dislike their customer service. I only fly them because I'm at a hub.
But I do agree that Southwest will probably take a huge hit next year regarding their customer service. Frontier or Spirt may have a chance to crack the top five for 2025 lol
Well when price matters and loyalty program matters AA is great. When reliability costumer service and amenities matters that is a where AA falls short.
I support AA still because how much easier to gain status with them and the status is better than UA and DL (oneworld Emerald). Oneworld alliance overall beats Star Alliance and SkyTeam. UA miles and DL miles are crap in comparison with AA as well. DL frequent flyers always take pride in their 15% off award flight when you hold their CC with annual fees, which merely boosts their SkyPeso value to 1.3 cpp or so 😂. Similarly, they even take pride on their “upgrade” to C+ where MCE is free from AA Platinum and above. In the end, from a customer’s perspective, Delta is only marginally better than AA by a little bit which also shows in their fares.
For me personally, to enjoy elite benefits and lounge access, I will have to buy non-BE on Delta and only if you have their $650 AF CC or fly premium economy on international itinerary with Gold+ status. You can achieve above with BE on AA if you have Platinum status and above also the ability to select MCE. The fact that Delta has higher fare already and the necessity of buying non-BE or even Premium Economy easily forces you to pay $200+ while flying with AA on BE. To me, Delta simply doesn’t make any sense to me unless I need to fly to one of their hub to take advantage of no layovers.
I flew Alaska last week and it was pretty amazing. The pre-order food (in coach), the FAs were all unbelievably nice and the planes were very clean. The longe was pretty nice too. I also got upgraded both ways and almost never do as EXP out of PHX. I am 1 or two on the list every time 😂. I have had a few awesome FAs on American but also some that should not even be allowed to work a flight as they seemingly hate everything about their job... FYI Travel and Leisure is now the old Wyndham time share unit. They decided to use the name of the magazine when rebranding
Just curious to see what your experiences are. I saw a report ranking the airlines with the best and worst customer service and got curious as to how bad customer service can get.
Also good to know as I'm stuck between choosing airlines for a trip I have coming up in February.
I had an absolutely ridiculous situation with Swiss. Due to fires around SFO, our LAX-SFO-FLR route wasn't going to work. So, we got re-booked on Swiss.
At the ticket counter, we asked to pay money to upgrade to business. The ticket agent didn't even look, she told us there were none available. Odd, we looked online while we were in line and business was...very open. I'm not saying she's a liar, but she seemed dodgy.
So we got out of line, went to a different agent. Bingo bango, look, business was available and we paid to upgrade. While we were paying, the original ticketing agent came up to us and asked us if we thought she was lying when she told us there was no availability in business. I looked her straight in the eye and said yes, because we just upgraded and I'm not sure what her problem was with us.
Spirit airlines is the worst. Their carry on allowance is smaller than all other airlines, checked bags are quite expensive, and the seats are incredibly uncomfortable. Also, they delayed our flight with no notice (we checked before we left for the airport and noticed, they did not email us) and that delay led to them canceling the flight, then gave us no option for another flight out that day. They wouldn’t give us a refund or any credit to find another flight out. We had to stay an extra day and take the next spirit flight out (which was also delayed with no notice).
Same experience with them.
British Airways removed the red rose from the first class washrooms.
Avoid if you're a fan of red roses.
They can keep their silly rose if they'd just upgrade all their sinks to the automatic ones in their 787-9s. Being able to properly wash your hands on a plane without having to keep your thumb on the nasty faucet button the whole time is pure bliss.
They put it back after complaints from the plutocratic class.
What savages!
I had a Condor flight get delayed 29 hours, but in 2 hour increments. They didn't have any staff at the airport either so no one to answer questions other than the airport staff who just told us that it wasn't their problem. I called the Condor help line a few times and waited on hold for 45+ minutes only to be hung up on more than once.
AA is quite awful. My pro tip to avoiding bad service on airplanes is to fly a lot and be loyal. I have United Global Services and Delta Platinum Medallion. Whenever I fly Star Alliance or SkyTeam (95% of my flights) I am treated like royalty. It makes travel stress-free.
I don’t know why people think this. Delta Airlines or American Airlines aren’t worse than Air France, Air Canada, ANA, or Qantas. Most US airline flight attendants and staff are super friendly and make a ton of funny jokes. I don’t get why people hate US airlines so much
You said that wrong. A select few US airlines are not worse than airlines in other countries.
You fly anywhere on Air France, Air Canada, ANA or Quantas and you’re getting a significantly better experience than on Delta or American. For starters, you get a meal. That’s included. You get drinks and snacks, that are included. You get a checked bag, that’s included.
You pay for each of those on AA or UA.
And let’s not even talk about UA/AA vs Cathay Pacific/Emirates/Qatar/Etihad. That’s like driving a Ford Fiesta vs a Bentley.
Now if you’re talking economy airlines? They all generally suck. Everywhere in the world.
Air Canada is straight ass. Bottom of the barrel
I've taken trans continental flights on Emirates, United, Delta, and my home country's airlines. Not a lot different with respect to beverages, snacks, and drinks. And the checked bag. Not sure what you mean.
The meal quality might differ, the aircraft condition might differ, but that's just variance.
I flew Newark to Cape Town in United Polaris. Their top of the line product. 14 hour flight. It was fine. The food was ok. The service was fine. The lay flat seats were tight and the ambiance was sufficient.
Then I flew Qatar business class from Johannesburg to Doha. And then Qatar again from Doha to Dallas. It was like two entirely different trips. Everything on Qatar was top notch. From the entry to the plane, to the bon voyage drinks and snacks, to the impeccable service to the downright delicious meals (a la carte - order anything you want at any time you want). The seats felt twice as big. The ambient lighting. The bar you could mingle at mid flight. Just top notch across the board.
There’s no American airline that’s anywhere close to that kind of experience.
Do people think this? as an American who lives abroad, I’m so used to Americans just reflexively shitting on themselves and our own country that I don’t notice the particulars anymore.
And you’re right. Airlines in general suck. I’ve flown damn near all international carriers, and I can say that United and AA are solidly middle of the pack.
My flights on ANA are always better than on Delta.
I used to fly from Dallas to Manila. Was always horrible. That period over the Pacific if you could not get to sleep you were always begging , " please just let us die in a fiery crash" The Manila stretch from Narita to Manila was wonderful . It was always JAL.
Bro, have u tried an asian airline? No bs random fees for everything like luggage / carts, free snacks, actually decent meal, employees that actually care. Any of the major asian airlines like ANA / airchina / korea air / asiana , etc…..
I didnt travel much during covid, it almost skewed my options on US airlines and everything till i travelled outside of the states after the rona days
Coming in at number two: Ezra Airlines.
What an interesting name for an airline, reminds me of that Old Testament prophet.
I walked through blood and bone to fly on JetBlue airlines, I was in Chicago at the time.
You know what ranked last? 9/11 airlines.
What a terrible name for an airline. Reminds me of that tragedy
9/11. Was. A national tragedy.
The convenient store chain??
Edit: I'm sorry. I misread that
How did 9/11 Airlines do?
They completely collapsed.
I'm financially illiterate, so I'm just going to assume this graph means I can buy a JetBlue Airlines ticket for $4.93. That's way affordable. I can see why they're ranked #1 in customer satisfaction.
best airlines for customer service
Key Considerations for Choosing Airlines Based on Customer Service:
Customer Satisfaction Ratings: Look for airlines that consistently rank high in customer satisfaction surveys. Airlines like Southwest, Delta, and JetBlue often receive positive feedback.
On-Time Performance: Airlines with a good track record for on-time arrivals and departures tend to have better customer service, as delays can lead to frustration.
In-Flight Experience: Consider airlines that offer comfortable seating, quality food, and entertainment options, as these factors contribute to overall customer satisfaction.
Customer Support: Check the availability and responsiveness of customer support channels, such as phone, chat, and social media. Airlines that are easy to reach and responsive to issues tend to score higher in customer service.
Handling of Issues: Research how airlines handle cancellations, delays, and lost luggage. Airlines that provide clear communication and compensation options usually rank higher in customer service.
Recommendations:
When choosing an airline, consider your specific needs, such as routes, pricing, and any loyalty programs you may be a part of.
