What Redditors are Saying

Best Amusement Park in Delaware

TL;DR Delaware does not have major amusement parks like other states, but nearby options include Dorney Park and Six Flags. Brandywine Springs offers historical interest rather than rides.

Brandywine Springs Amusement Park

While Delaware lacks large-scale amusement parks, Brandywine Springs is a notable historical site. This park was operational from the 1800s to the early 1900s near Wilmington. Although it no longer functions as an amusement park, visitors can enjoy walking trails and historical markers that indicate where attractions once stood [2:1][2:2]. It provides a unique experience for those interested in the history of amusement parks.

Nearby Options: Dorney Park

For those willing to travel outside Delaware, Dorney Park in Pennsylvania is a popular choice. It's known for its roller coasters and water rides, making it suitable for thrill-seekers and families alike [3:1][3:2]. The park has a rich history and offers a variety of attractions, including Demon Drop and Thunderhawk [3:3][3:5]. While not in Delaware, it's one of the closest major amusement parks to the state.

Six Flags and Other Alternatives

Six Flags parks are another option for Delaware residents seeking amusement park thrills. While not located within Delaware itself, these parks offer a wide range of rides and attractions. They are often recommended for families looking for a full day of entertainment [5:1].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

If you're specifically looking for an amusement park within Delaware, options are limited. However, exploring nearby states can provide access to larger parks with more diverse offerings. Additionally, checking out local events or smaller attractions like trampoline parks and water parks might offer some fun closer to home.

The forgotten Brandywine Springs Amusement Park

This is a forgotten park that was up by Wilmington from the 1800s to the 1900s. There were a pretty nice amount of attractions, rides, and even a roller coaster. It closed around 1911, and has been forgotten to time. Nearly all buildings in the park do not exist anymore, and are blended in with the New Castle County forestry.

We enjoy walks there still to this day. They have markers and signs of what attraction used to be there.

It still is here 3302 Faulkland Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808. Park in the parking lot and walk behind the picnic pavilions. There are trails and steps. Follow them, enjoy.

8/29/25 [Dorney Park] Trip Report

Expected more of a crowd, but this was the closest Six Flags park within proximity to me, and I decided to purchase the Gold Pass with my friend so we can use the all park passport for more parks next year. We got there early and headed towards the back, Demon Drop was closed for the first hour and a half, so we hit Possessed, Iron Menace, Steel Force, and Thunderhawk beforehand. We grabbed food, and then headed for Demon Drop. After that we hit Hydra and Talon, rode those multiple times as the waits were short, and then headed back towards the back and hit Possessed again. Rode the Zephyr and decided to hold off on Iron Menace for now. We decided to ride Steel Force another two times and then tried Enterprise, which was a great flat ride. Demon Drop broke for a bit so we decided to hit the log flume, and then went back to steel force, and Demon Drop re opened and we got another ride on it. We then went back to Hydra and Talon, and then went back towards the back for our final laps on Iron Menace and Possessed. Went twice on Possessed, and once on Iron Menace. We did three last laps on Steel Force, and hit two more laps on Demon Drop. Rode Hydra and then Talon in the front row and then were on our way home.

Possessed: This ride was great, best in the back row as the feeling you get going straight up is crazy. First launch isn’t crazy powerful but is still punchy. Overall a great ride and never had a long wait. Rode this one roughly 6 times

Iron Menace: Fun dive coaster, but like people said the shaking is noticeable, we rode this ride 3 times and only rode in the front, so it was only noticeable at the top of most of the inversions and didn’t cause me much issues, just thought it was funny.

Steel Force: Honestly might be the best roller coaster in the park, it does everything great and I didn’t think the lap bars would leave you that much room, it only sped up throughout the day and we rode in the front, middle, and back. I honestly think the front gave stronger airtime, the drop was better, and felt less janky. We probably rode this around 8-10 times.

Thunderhawk: A ride I am glad I am short for because my tall friend had some issues where he banged his knees into the grab bar every pop of airtime. There was a moment where I got launched into the bar, but it’s a hundred years old so I’ll give it some slack. Rode it once in the front row.

Hydra, The Revenge: By far my favorite Floorless, I love the jojo roll out of the station and was the best in the front left outside seat. I discovered the best way to ride was defensively keeping my head forward to avoid the headbanging I usually get on Floorless coasters, which made it very pleasant. I should try that on more Floorless coasters. We rode this three times.

Talon: My favorite out of the three inverts I have been on (Talon, Great Bear, and Raptor), I loved the right outside seat in the front as you get so close to the fences and trees and it’s just a crazy ride. Our first ride was in the middle and I didn’t know what to expect as I didn’t know the layout well. I loved the way the terrain worked and the Immelmann used the trenches to work better. It is whippy and I like how it didn’t hurt with head banging, is really intense and doesn’t have any awkward straight sections like Great Bear has. Rode this one five times

Demon Drop: Still not sure whether or not to count this as a coaster, but the park doesn’t consider it one so for now I’m not counting it. However this ride is very amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Rode it 5 times and the feeling never got old. It just feels like you are never gonna stop falling and it’s my favorite drop tower I have ever ridden. Although you gotta watch out for the clunk of doom for when you go back to the station.

Enterprise: such a fun flat ride and was fun, even though operations kind of sucked for it.

Log Flume: Very short but also very chaotic, felt like a river rapids excursion and was a nightmare if you didn’t want to get wet. Still fun though and only did it once, and was actually the longest line we waited in all day.

Dorney Park I don’t really have a ranking for parks, but I normally enjoy every park I go to. The experience was amazing, the rides were all really good, and I think they just need one more standalone attraction that shines above the rest. I’m gonna give this park an 8/10 as I had a great time and didn’t have really any issues. Only thing that sucked is the waterpark was closed and I’m not sure why, but it would have been cool to check out.

Ride Count: Thunderhawk - 1 Log Flume - 1 Enterprise - 2 Hydra - 3 Iron Menace - 3 Talon - 5 Demon Drop - 5 Possessed - 6 Steel Force - 9

Total: 35 Rides

I'm actually at this park right now! Much more of a crowd today, but the wait times have been reasonably short aside from Wild Mouse.

The water rides (outside of the water park its self) are actually great though, don't sleep on those

I would have done more water rides if the water park was open, mainly just so I could be in a bathing suit

My favorite thing about demon drop is the 80,000 components and completely over engineered systems like many other prototypes.

It gets my adrenaline going a bit because it looks destined to fail. Not many rides can put a bit of fear in me but that one does....and I love it!

Talon’s color scheme is one of the best out there. Greyed out on the pull-up into the vertical loop. Wasn’t expecting it to be as intense as it was!

As a person whose home park is Dorney, I appreciate the trip report.

Dorney’s biggest area of opportunity right now is flat rides. In the last year, we’ve lost Monster, Apollo, and Meteor, and I always say Enterprise probably isn’t long for this world (as you noted, it’s an operations nightmare, and there isn’t exactly an easy way to modernize/automate the restraints.

What’s beautiful about Dorney, is the amount of history that is there. Thunderhawk, the Zephyr, the Whip, the trout fountain behind Demon Drop, or even just the old tiered parking lot behind Steel Force and the remnants of the old entrance gate or the public road that used to pass right through the park. It’s just incredible to see how it has evolved over the last several decades.

I commend you for your love of Demon Drop. I absolutely hate it. 😂

[Wisconsin Dells Mountain Coaster] will be the first of its kind in the state and the first major coaster in the Dells since Hades!

This post tipped me off to this site a few months ago. Since then, I have been following the project blindly, but now it is announced! The aptly named Wisconsin Dells Mountain Coaster has an adorable mascot, and looks like it'll be a solid family attraction! It's in kind of a weird spot in the Dells, but all things considered, only about a 5 minute drive from basically everything else in the Dells. It'll be worth it too, as the hill actually has some decent vertical (over 100 ft!) depending on how much is used of it. They only have part of the lift hill in for now, but I would expect construction to go quite fast, as the ride should be open in the summer! They are also claiming "year round fun" so I definitely plan on riding this in -10°F weather. Maybe there will be some enclosed carts for that? Guess we will find out!

The Wiegand ones I've been on have been pretty mediocre. But the Runaway Mountain Coaster in Branson is an ADG and was absolutely nuts. I don't think this will be thaaaat good but I'm hoping for something a little bit rowdier

This is pretty cool. Wisconsin and Illinois don't have substantial elevation changes but you can still have some fun like this. I remember going sledding and skiing on the tiny hills around Chicago.

Granite Peak (Rib Mountain) in Wausau had a proposed mountain coaster for a while but it wasn't added to the latest master plan. That hill has 600+ feet of vertical, which would make it a great mountain coaster. As our winters here in Wisconsin get dryer and warmer, these ski hills will need to diversify. There's one hill in Illinois that already does lift served mountain biking, has an Alpine slide and a Soarin Eagle zip line. I'm sure this is just the start of mountain coasters for the region. I'm interested to see how long this one feels compared to the other three I've done so far, all in Branson

Yeah even the California winter parks like Boreal are heavily investing in all of that kind of stuff, plus some indoor skate parks and climbing walls.

except the driftless area, which includes the Wisconsin Dells. There's a reason there's so many hills and cool rock formations there. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driftless_Area

Yeah, I guess my perspective is skewed from being in California for too long. 600 feet isn't bad, hell the boreal resort only has about that much, but the resorts like Palisades have almost 3000 feet.

I get why (price), but the Wiegand product is just better. I'll probably ride it for $20-25 at some point and tell myself "well, I was already in the area", but those are often just too expensive for how short many of them are.

Cool_Owl7159 · 6 months ago

>I'll probably ride it for $20-25

that's how much Mt Olympus tickets cost. They won't be able to charge that much 😂

Wisconsin has some of the lowest amusement park prices anywhere, idk how they get away with it

The Land Of Make Believe

Hello my fellow Jerseyans, inns, aliens? 👽 born and raised, always looking for an adventure. Wanted to do something awesome with my 10 year olds and my fiancé and both family’s before school starts, and I stumbled upon this place, “ THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE” how have I never heard? It looks like everything I wanted to do in my childhood all in one place! But, is it really what it says it is? It’s the HYPE, and 2 hour drive worth it? I need answers before I convince my man to take off work and road trip this shit.

EDIT: Looking for a water park attraction with it as well. Should have added that lol no six flags, American dream, mountain creek, or AC. Those places blow lol

It's cute but small. The rides will be boring for a 10 year old. Last summer my son was 8 and most were too tame and young for him, aside from a couple. The waterpark side is still a lot of fun at that age. It's inexpensive so probably worth checking it out for the day anyway.

Is it worth going just for rides? Our daughter is 2 1/2 and will go on anything she can. She’s just under 36” but we’ve had luck at Dorney with a few rides that have 36” minimum. Also have some special shoes to help her out haha. We wanted to go to the water park also but we couldn’t get there this past Monday and now it’s low 70s so I can’t see us doing the water stuff. We were gonna go to Ditch Wonderland but realized they are only open Friday, Saturday, Sunday now and I’m sure the Friday before Labor Day weekend will be way too packed. Gonna be mad if we don’t do at least one so I was thinking maybe land of make believe just for the rides but not even sure if it’s worth it. We have Dorney passes and have been there 12 times already. Not sure if Land of Make Believe has anything different for her.

Mega Appreciation Post for Six Flags America

Posted by Yasmeen09 · in r/maryland · 27 days ago

Hey! About a month ago I posted a six flags exit poll to multiple subreddits to put into a mega appreciation post!

Past with the park:

In my personal experience, this park was my childhood theme park. Some of my best days in my childhood were spent here. We came every year for multiple days and this park really sparked my love for theme parks.

It took all of my firsts. My first teacup ride, my first carousel, my first flying carousel, my first coaster, my first wooden coaster, my first wild mouse my first outdoor drop tower, my first pendulum ride, my first big boat water slide type ride that gave big splashes, my first my first very high flying carousel, my first river raft, my first B&M and Intamin coasters. The great chase was my childhood favorite ride as a kid. I absolutely loved this thing. We always went as a family and it was so fun. I still remember how fast it was. I remember the ball house where there were a bunch of balls. I remember the water parks and wet rides and how wet we got how much fun we had drying off. All that good stuff. It was always a dream to go. That park. Even though it’s not the greatest park. I know that. In terms of theming it was the worst by a mile. But I love the rides, I enjoy the line up they have. Joker is a fun ride that’s all twisty. Superman is still in my top five of all time favorite coasters in general. Firebird is great despite how people  thought it bobbed their head (although it wasn’t really an issue for me for the most part.) Roar was always a great time. Wild One is charming and grew on me. Wonder Woman is not as scary as I thought (more on that later.) Harley Quinn is so thrilling and fun, always a fantastic time. And Batwing is legit the scariest coaster I’ve ever been on in my life by a mile. It was always a blast…when it was working lmao that ride was very iffy and despite going so many times I only went on that one two times. Although…I hated Mind Eraser…fuck that ride. That ride can die in an inferno. And Riddle Me This, High Seas, Flying Carosel, Minutemen Motors and Cyclone were nice to take a break from the intensity. All in all, these rides combined to make for a wonderful experince overall (at least in my opinion.)

Why it’s closing:

The reason why it’s closing on Nov. 2nd was not because it was one of the worser parks, but because the land was high value as it's sitting right next to the DC area. So, they dedicided the land was more valuable than the pakr itself. So they'll buldoze the land and try to sell the land. Although, they don't have a buyer set up so this could end up in disaster. I sincerely hope it does, because this park unlike some other parks in the chain had SO much potential to be one of their most profitable parks. It had the costumer base of these people who were right next to DC. It had some great coasters, all it needed was a little spruce up in the theming, replace some of the weaker rides with some amazing rides and this would've one of the best performing in the chian. But what kills me is that it's going out on a whimper...not a bang. It's a ghost-town, half the rides are closed, and no one cares...although that isn't the expericne I got when I went my most recent time.

Poll Results:

I ran a poll and I got about 18 responses. Here were the results.

The demographic was mostly men, 83.3% were men...about 15 people. Two of them were non-binary (11.1%) and just One of them was a woman (5.6%). The age is a bit more interesting, most of them were 30-39 (about 44.4%), with teenages (13-17), young adults (18-29), and middle age (40-55) all tied for second most with 16.7% percent which is about 3 people in each group, and one person was in the group older adults (55-64) with only 5.4% of the poll. SO most of them were adult men/teenagers who had many things to say about the park. Although I did notice that the older people tended to have more things to say than the younger people.

Question 1: What would you do to change the park if you could?

Most answered by saying they'd want to renovate the existing rides, adding new rides, and having better maintanece, investment, and marketing of the park overall. Specfically RMCing Roar (from two seperate people, which is fair Lmao.)

Question 2: How does the closure personally affect you?

Most were met with either saddess for the park or indifference. I thought this one was kind of funny : "Well i cant go to it anymore".

But one specfic part in someones response really resonated with me: "My favorite coaster (out of over 300) is Wild One. I’m absolutely devastated that my daughter will never get to ride it with me as she’s still 4 inches too short to ride it. I’d do nearly anything to be able to continue sharing memories with my kiddos there."

It was very heartbreaking to hear. Even though many people may not like it, it was very special to a lot of people and this specific person and myself.

Question 3: What is your best and worst experiences with the park?

There were a lot of interesting responses with this one. Many recalled the people who may have soured the experince for them (stealing, or getting caught in a mob of people). But there were also many great experinces like being able to go on rides multiple times.

Question 4: How do you think this will impact the community around?

Most talked about the workers who would be out of a job. Which is bet probably IS the thing that will be the biggest thing that comes from this. There were also just people saying how it would be a loss of a theme park option, leading to other parks being more crowded (which is a fair point to consider.)

Question 5: What is one thing you’ll miss about the park?

Most said the rides and the workers there. Which really was the main thing that made this park enjoyable. And the workers who really tried to make this park what it should've been.

Question 6&7: Do you think the park will close before Nov. 2? Why do you think that way?

We now know from the Six Flags schedule on the website that it won't. But I still wanted to talk about the results here. I know on some the reddit posts about this park that many people were "calling it". The poll is pretty split with this one. (35.3%) said yes and no. About 6 people in each group and about 5 people (29.4%) said maybe. When asked why, the responses were interesting. The people that said no say that Six Flags would get even worse backlash for it. That they'd have to refunds, that the fall would draw in more costomuers. The people that said that it would justified by saying half the rides are closed so "what's the point".

Question 8: What do you think will happen to rides?

Most that while the newer and great rides may be sold or relocated that most of them would probably get scrapped. Which is pretty realistic, most of the coasters there aren't really worth bringing to another park and all that.

Questions 9: What is your favorite ride from the park?

About five or six people said superman, and Wild One, Joker's Jinx, and Batwing got two people respectively. One person said Roar, Rajin Cajin, and some water coaster each.

Question 10: If have anything additional to say, you can say it here

Here are my two favorites:

"disclosure is nothing but corporate greed. If the land was cheap, it would not be this park. This park has a ton of potential and could rake in some revenue."

"This park deserved so much better than it got. This is a heavy, heavy loss and an absolute tragedy for the industry, especially given what could have been."

Overall, a lot of people said that they would miss it, others were glad to see it gone or were rather indifferent. There were genuine heartfelt respones I will keep to my chest and think about for a long time.

Interview:

When I was at this park I interviewed a worker who worked the carnival stand.

They said that they had really valued the friendships they had built there, that they made friends they would have made in any situation. They talked about how the clousure would destroy a good chuck of the market for young teens who wanted a summer job. How the closest park was now two hours away (which sucks.) How many parents would drop off their kids there so they wouldn’t be bored. When I asked them whether they thought it’d close by Labor Day they said that when they cancelled freight fest it got them worried. Which was quite a scare.

Most recent personal experience:

Now let me tell you about the most recent time I came to this park.

I went with my uncle, dad, and two cousins. We spent pretty much the entire day there like you’re supposed to do. I went on August 3rd…a Sunday.

I heard it was basically a ghost-town even on the weekends. Which had me worried. I liked short lines but I didn’t want it to be a complete ghost-town. But…it was busy. Not super busy or anything but it was decently busy. I had to wait a decent amount of time for rides like Harley Quinn, Mind Eraser, Jokers Jinx, and Wonder Woman. Which was shocking. Mind Eraser might’ve been like…45 minutes. Which is practically unheard of at this park. The worker I interviewed told me this was most people they’ve had since July 4th. That it’s been a complete ghost-town for the most part. Which is kind of crazy that we went on a busy day. What are the odds?

Anyway, when we entered the Flying Carousel was closed as well as the Tea Cups. So we went on over to the Wild One as our first ride. It was fun, I remember it being rough. So it was weird. Although I actually do remember it being fun the second to last time I came as well. We waited a few minutes before going on board.

Next we went on Voodoo Drop which was my first outdoor coaster. (Taking another first.) And it was pretty fun. I waited about 15-20 for this one because they only operated one of them.

Next we went on Fire Bird and Roar as well as High Seas. Fire Bird actually hit my head for the very first time. It never did that before. Although there were always complaints for that, it never happened to me. But this time, it did. It was still pretty fun though. Roar was rougher than I remember as well. Probably the fact that it’s older and closing. High Seas was as comical as ever the screams are always fun. A simple ride. High Seas we walked on. Roar and Fire Bird we waited a few minutes before hopping on.

We went over to Gotham City and hit Wonder Woman. Here’s the thing with Wonder Woman. This was one ride I never conquered. I’m absolutely terrified of this type of ride. It was only a few years back I finally rode on Flying Carousel with a bit of nervousness STILL let alone Wonder Woman which was the same thing but dialed up to craziness. I never really thought I’d ever do it but when it was announced the park was closing I knew it’d kick myself years down the line if I didn’t go so I just decided to go for it. It was actually predicted to be closed. But I was so happy and relived to see it was open! I was nervous, so I popped in my headphones and it really helped but it actually wasn’t that bad. Not nearly as bad as I thought. Also, as I was waiting I actually wasn’t scared which was weird but whatever.

Then we went to Jokers Jinx. It was a good time. As usual. But it was a 20-30 minute long wait. The worker sounded a bit enthusiastic about his job unlike the previous ones preceding that looked like they wanted to commit suicide right then and there. It was kind of funny… but yeah great ride.

We went on Harley Quinn twice. It’s amazing as usual. It opened later and we immediately got on it. The first wait was about 10 minutes or so. The second time was about 20-30 minutes again.

Riddle me this already looked abandoned as the center of the ride had been taken out. Looked to be closed for the season and isn’t even listed in the site anymore. The entire section of whistle stop was completely closed and Superman and Batwing were closed. Although those two rides there’s still hope as the sign said they were waiting for the parts to come for rides to work before the park closes the worker told me it would probably be October before it opens again. Cyclone also looked abandoned and prepared for destruction as well. The park looked half abandoned half alive. It was kind of cool to see. But the park looked mostly alive though.

We then went to steam town. Which was the renovated part. I wanted to go on the new ride there but the line was too long for me. (Real shocker.) So we just went on Mind Eraser. I don’t care about its bullshit new name. It’s Mind Eraser. So we went and it was about a 30-45 minute wait. Probably the longest we had to wait. Although it was cut short because the ride was down for maintenance for about five minutes and most of the line walked out so when it got back to function we basically got on almost immediately. I thought it might be better but I genuinely thought I was going to die and not in the thrill way in the way that the ride was going to self destruct. My cousin thought the same. And our picture is the embodiment of our feelings at the time. It was better than last time as I actually got hit last time…but it was still very rough.

We went to the near entrance and the Tea Cups were open so we went and it was fun. It was walk on. Then finally, normally I wouldn’t do this for a Six Flags America trip. But I went to the Great Chase because it might be the last time I ever get to go. I asked someone to record us. When we were done I was in tears and the person who recorded the video for us asked me if it was because I got scared—man I wish that my worry. I told them no and thanked them for the video before leaving. We went to the shop and I bought a shirt with “Six Flags America” to truly remember it. We leave and that’s about it.

TL;DR despite literally everything telling me it was going to be a ghost-town it was opposite. So, you’re never really going to know what you’re going to get at this park. Aside from Superman and Batwing. Almost every other ride we wanted to do was open! So I’d say it was very successful. If you’ve never gone there and you have the convenience to go—do it. You never know what you’re going to get and this park will close forever so might as well.

Sorry for the long post lol. If you’ve read all the way to the end thanks for sticking around. Have a wonderful week!

I spent a lot of time at this park growing up. Even before it was Six Flags and was Adventure World or Wild World. I am saddened this is the final year.

I often feel like I’m the only one singing the praises of Six Flags, lol. Customers service has been subpar, definitely, but everything else for us has been good. We’re a family of four that has had season passes for the last 5 years or so. It’s been a great value. Passes are generally like $60/person and we go no fewer than 7 times a year. That cost includes parking and the water park. There’s nothing that pays off with that much fun for that cost. We were just there yesterday, in fact. I’m so sad about its closing.

We bought seasons passes every year for our toddler and above children. The waterpark was amazing!

I’m not a roller coaster guy, but there was enough to keep me busy.

My five-year-old loved Batman. One day we were walking through the park and we saw Batman. I told him “son look at Batman go say hi!“ He turned around and hightailed it in the opposite direction lol. Bashful I guess.

I’m gonna miss it.

Been doing season passes there for the last eight years… The kids love this place, it's super chill and the rides are great for anyone under 14... Lake is super clean and the waterpark is a ton of fun. Food is way too expensive here but they sell beer thank God...

The lines aren't long, it's not a lot of walking, the beach area is nice and the water's not deep, and it's a decent water park.

Knoebels Review

Posted by LouderKnights · in r/Themepark · 4 months ago

So I went to Knoebels for the first time with my wife over the past weekend after the recommendation from lots of folks in this sub. I thought I would give my thoughts in a simple to read format so other people could potentially find it helpful in the future! I will score the park according to 5 categories, Theme/ambience, Thrill Rides, Family Rides, Non-Ride Entertainment & Food, and Cost Value. I will rate the park up to 2 points per section, and give my thoughts as to why I gave that rating. Lastly, I will add up the individual points to give the park a final overall score, with a 10 being a perfect score. So with that, lets begin!

Knoebels Amusement Resort located in Elysburg, PA

Theme/Ambience: Knoebels is a very interesting place. It is located in the middle of nowhere, and is hidden behind trees and hills in PA. In fact, we didnt realize the park was so close to us while driving, until we drove up to it. It is a free entry, pay per ride park. The largest of its kind in the US. This makes it very unique from the rest of the large scale theme/amusement parks such as Six Flags, Disney, Universal etc. When entering the park you are hit right away with this nostalgic summer camp charm. It feels like you are 10 again going away to summer camp, except this camps has roller coasters and drop towers. There are log cabins literally interspersed between rides in the middle of the park where I saw people having camp fires! You are walking on old roads or gravel paths, no pavers to be seen. Too add to this charm, the park really leans into the old school nostalgic feel. Food buildings are in the shape of the food they serve (there was a shop shaped like a loaf of bread, a lemonade stand was a lemon, etc.), there is an old school arcade which runs on quarters, there are carnival games spread all through the park. A lot of their rides are classic old flat rides as well, not to mention their antique carousels! When walking in the park I really felt like I was back in time. It really is a magical place in its own way. All in all, while Knoebels doesn't seem have any real cohesive active themed lands or what not like the big companies, they lean into their oldschool roots very well and they hit a home run! Score: 1.8.

Thrill Rides: Knoebels is best known by coaster enthusiasts as being the home of the best wooden roller coaster in the world 7 years running with Phoenix. It is an absolutely fantastic coaster with loads of airtime. It is truly a legendary ride, but thats not all Knoebels has to offer. Twister, a homage to Mister Twister, is Knoebels other wooden rollercoaster. While it may not be as acclaimed as Phoenix, it is a really fun ride as well! It is the tallest coaster in the park, and it focuses on lateral forces with multiple turns (like a twister) rather than airtime. While all those lateral g's can hurt a little, its still a very fun ride. The parks only modern steel coaster is Impulse, a Zierer Tower Speed Coaster with a 90 degree lift hill and 90 degree drop with a max height of 98 feet. It is a smooth ride and boasts 4 inversions. While it is a fun rollercoaster, it only ran two cars with a max of 8 passengers while I was there which led to very long wait times. While it is a perfectly fine coaster, it is easily the weakest out of the 3 big coasters at knoebels in my opinion. Knoebels is also home to the worlds only wooden trackless rollercoaster, Flying Turns. This was a very fun ride, which really felt like you were on a bobsled. Unfortunately it is held back by its short ride time and extremely long waits due to the small carts needed for the ride. Outside of coasters, Knoebels boasts a very impressive assortment of thrill flat rides. Its flying scooter ride is one of the fastest in existence, and man can you snap it! It was a great ride! It has an awesome drop tower, cosmotron and some awesome flumes as well. While Knoebels may not have a huge number of thrilling coasters, the variety and quality of their coasters and especially their flat rides really make up for it. Score: 1.7.

Family Rides: Knoebels has some of the best carousels around. Their antique grand carousel still has brass rings to grab like they used to be! Honestly, this was one of my favorite rides in the park, there was just so much history and fun on it. Furthermore, it has 2 really great dark rides. The haunted mansion is a classic old school haunted house dark ride, and has absolutely great detail in its artwork and animatronics. Black Diamond is their other dark ride, with entertaining animatronics and artwork, but this ride has some coaster elements too which really adds to its fun. The park also has two small train rides which are unique and really fun in their own ways. One is literally a mini choochoo train, where the operator needs to shovel in coal to keep the train running! It was a great experience! The other, while electric, took you through the campground and woods and through Twister and under water slides! It was a very unique ride. All in all, Knoebels delivers on both thrills and family fun! Score: 1.7.

Non-Ride Entertainment & Food: Knoebels is filled with old school carnival games throughout the park. At times it felt like I was walking through my local fall fair/carnival because all the fun quirky games. It also has a unique game which mixes bingo and ski ball called Fascination which was a hoot! There is also a pool, laser tag, and mini golf on the park!. While there isnt much live entertainment at the park, there is some. There was a band playing at one point in the day, and they had a cool dress up storytime for kids, but don't expect a disneyish live show experience here. Lastly, the food. The food at knoebels is repeatedly ranked as some of the best in the world. In my experience, while the food was quite good, it didnt absolutely blow me away. This may have been on me setting my expectations very high due to all the high praise. Score: 1.6.

Cost Value: Now this is where Knoebels really shines. Its is such a GREAT VALUE. The parking is free and there is a free tram to pick you up, if you parked all the way on the other side of the lot. There is no entry fee, you only pay for the rides you want to ride. You can go to knoebels for a full day of fun and not spend anything at all if you just want to enjoy the atmosphere. Or you can can buy a 20 dollar ticket book, hit the main rollercoasters and call it a day. Or maybe you just reaaalllllyyy want to ride Phoenix. Well all you'll need is 5 bucks! Furthermore the food is priced extremely well. We got a double cheeseburger, a spicy chicken sandwhich, 2 bags of chips and 2 drinks all for 26 dollars! That is a steal! Knoebels may be the best value large scale park in the country. Score: 2.

Overall Score: 8.8

I think this is a perfect score. While Knoebels isn't the absolute perfect theme park in the world it does everything very well, and its value cant be beat. Take all of this together and you. get an extremely fun park for everyone!

🚜Machinery & Ride Engineering

  • Real Heavy Equipment, modified for safety Most rides use full-size JCB and Terex machines—excavators, backhoes, skid-steers, telehandlers—specially adapted with hydraulic and electronic limiters, five-point harnesses, and speed capped at around 4–5 mph
  • Custom-Engineered Attractions Unique rides like the Spin Dizzy (a JCB excavator with an eight-passenger bucket) and Lumberjack Claw (forest logging crane) were designed and tested with mechanical engineers, including custom hydraulic packs, reinforced foundations, and safety overrides

🏗️ Site Development & Construction

  • Rapid Construction Built on a 14-acre site adjacent to Sahara Sam’s, construction—from land clearing in December 2013 to grand opening in June 2014—was completed in just six months
  • Terrain Engineering Earthworks involved moving ~100,000 cubic yards of soil, addressing elevation differences (~155–174 ft), grading, and stormwater management through detention basins

🛠️ Maintenance & Safety Systems

  • Rigorous Daily & Preventative Maintenance A team of trained mechanics conducts daily inspections, fluid and hydraulic checks, and preventative servicing based on runtime logs and manufacturers’ standards. Telematic diagnostic tools support proactive maintenance and machine replacement cycles every 3–5 years
  • Compliance & Safety Certification Modifications were cross-checked with third-party crash engineers and approved under NJ regulations. Safety features include speed governors, structural reinforcement, safety harnesses, and braking/locking systems

🌊 The Water Main Integration

  • Construction-themed Waterpark The Water Main includes hydraulically themed pools—Bulldozer Bay, Jackhammer Bay, Claw Hammer Cove—and obstacle courses with water cranes. These features were engineered to enhance guest experience while maintaining hydraulic integrity and drainage capacity

A recent trip report from [Champion's Domain] after a trip in April 2025

Posted by Training_Penalty7047 · in r/rollercoasterjerk · 2 months ago
post image

Champion's Domain is a theme park located in Accokeek, Maryland, 21 miles outside of Washington DC, and had originally opened in March of 1973 under the ownership of 1UP Entertainment. As such, this was built as the sister park to Champion's Island, which opened a week earlier. In the 1980s they were officially owned by Nintendo seeing as 1UP Entertainment merged to Super Nintendo World Parks and Entertainment in 1988.

Much like its sister park, the park features 3 icons including Peach's Castle, Bowser's Castle, and Prism Tower. As such, they lead you into their respective lands. The park includes the lands Mushroom Kingdom, Donut Flats, Pokémon Midway, Yoshi's Island, Bowser's Kingdom, Kirby Hill, and Lake Hylia.

I have had quite a history with this park, seeing as it was one of the first Nintendo theme parks I went to. I had visited in 2012, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and most recently, in April of this year.

The real star of the show is their unique and outside-the-box coaster lineup.

Peaches and Scream is a rare in-house built Flying Turns roller coaster that opened with the park back in 1973. It's tame in contrast to the other in-house Flying Turns coaster built in PokéPark Erie known as Gogoat's Alpine Slide.

Wrecking Crew is a Maurer SkyLoop that offers some tremendous amounts of hangtime. It opened in 2005 and is the only ride of its kind on the East Coast. It's quite a quirky ride!

Mario Wrangler is an Intamin Impulse coaster that opened in 2001 and it is one of only two that still feature the holding brake at the vertical tower, making it more intense than the late Wicked Twister.

The Wiggler is a 1990 custom Zierer Tivoli tucked in the middle of the woods. It is arguably the most heavily-themed coaster at the park, seeing as there are ton of set pieces within the trees. However, the ride experience itself is a bit underwhelming, seeing as you don't have a lot of time to take in the details.

Eternal Star is one of the four wooden coasters that opened with the park back in 1973. Out of the three left, this one is the weakest of the trio. It doesn't have a lot of forces, nor the airtime or good layout of the Eternal Star at Champion's Island. It has a good first drop, but it really just meanders a lot after the descent.

Mewtwo's Revenge is really where the lineup starts to cook. It's a 1996 Togo hyper coaster that runs shockingly really smooth, which is helpful since the layout of this ride is just nothing short of amazing. The pacing, the airtime, the elements, you name it, they're just fast-paced fun. There's a violent drop after the overbanked turn that ducks underneath the station! Easily one of the scariest moments of ejector airtime within the park.

Charizard's Fury is the main attraction of the park that opened in 2014. Standing tall at 256 feet, this ride is all about speed and laterals, whereas Mewtwo's Revenge was all about elements. In a way, it reminds me of Formula Rossa with the way the layout focuses on laterals.

Yoshi's Fruit Cart is the park's smallest kids coaster, being built by Intamin in 1979 as their second creation. It's honestly quite boring, but it is at least good for people who haven't been on roller coasters at all.

Parakarry's Airmail is the park's B&M Batman clone which opened in 1995. It's the lame old same old B&M invert layout...yare yare yare, Himeji Central Park.

Mew's Psychedelic Psycle is the park's 1999 MACK Wild Mouse coaster which just so happens to be themed around a cat-like character. Irony aside, this ride is a very good option for families. As for me, it's quite good, even if it is admittedly tamer than their more compact wild mouse rides. The first drop offers a bit of floater.

Bowser's Magic Mountain is probably my least favorite of the lineup, seeing as it's a custom Maurer spinner that opened in 2006 and is mostly just a few drops and a couple of turns with some mediocre dark ride scenes once the coaster section is all over.

Flame Runners is a Zamperla Motorbike coaster that opened in 2012. It's the exact same layout as Steeplechase at Luna Park, which while underwhelming, at least has a good launch and offers great views of the Hylia Castle.

The Great Cave Offensive is a PTC woodie that opened with the park in 1973, and was designed by John Allen. The ride uses the hill to its advantage, seeing as the first drop technically goes down 130 feet, even though the lift hill is only 100 feet tall. It runs really smooth for its age.

Kirby's Air Ride is an Intamin Accelerator coaster that opened in 2017. Though it doesn't have the theming or the barrel roll found on Nintendo Observatory's version, this ride does feature a neat but short layout.

Figure 8 Looper is the park's Arrow shuttle loop coaster which opened in 1981. It rarely operates but it recently reopened in 2025 after standing but not operating since 2019. The ride itself is interesting, as it yanks you down both forwards and backwards depending on where you sit.

And the defunct credits I have from here include:

Yoshi's Island X-pedition (1992-2013), a MACK Bobsled coaster that didn't really do too much outside of going through turn after turn, but it did get faster near the end.

Mario Bros. (1973-2013), a dueling PTC woodie that was a clone of Kingdom Battle at Nintendo Seas or Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire at PokéPark Orlando. It was a classic ride that uniquely featured Morgan trains. Luigi's side definitely ran rougher than Mario's side by 2012.

So would I recommend Champion's Domain? Absolutely! Especially with the closure of Six Flags America impending, this will definitely work its way to the coaster capital of the DMV area.

Stay tuned next time, where I'll review PokéPark Orlando!

Key Considerations for Choosing an Amusement Park in Delaware:

  1. Variety of Rides: Look for parks that offer a mix of thrill rides, family-friendly attractions, and kiddie rides to cater to all age groups.

  2. Entertainment Options: Consider parks that provide shows, live entertainment, or special events, which can enhance the overall experience.

  3. Accessibility: Check the park's location and accessibility, including parking options and public transport availability.

  4. Amenities: Look for parks with good amenities such as dining options, restrooms, and shaded areas for relaxation.
