TL;DR
Six Flags New England
Six Flags New England is the largest and most popular amusement park in Massachusetts. Located in Agawam, it offers a wide variety of rides, including roller coasters and other thrill rides [1:2]. It is particularly known for its focus on coaster enthusiasts, making it a must-visit for those seeking adrenaline-pumping experiences
[3:1]. However, some visitors have noted issues with line cutters, which can affect the overall experience
[2:4].
Canobie Lake Park
Located just over the border in Salem, New Hampshire, Canobie Lake Park provides a more traditional amusement park experience. While it may not have as many extreme rides as Six Flags, it offers a charming atmosphere that many visitors appreciate [2:2]. The park features a mix of family-friendly and thrilling rides, making it a versatile option for different age groups
[3:1].
Edaville Family Theme Park
Situated in Carver, Massachusetts, Edaville Family Theme Park is tailored more towards families with young children. It includes a selection of rides that are suitable for kids rather than adults seeking high thrills [1:1]. This park might not be the best choice for those looking for big or scary rides but can be a delightful spot for a family outing.
Water Parks
For those interested in water parks, Water Country is frequently recommended for its large size and variety of attractions [5:6]. Located in Portsmouth, NH, it offers a fun day out with numerous slides and pools, though it can get crowded during peak times
[5:5]. The Water Park of New England, formerly Coco Key, is an indoor option in Danvers, MA, but opinions vary regarding its value and cleanliness
[5:1]
[5:4].
Overall, Massachusetts offers a range of amusement parks catering to different preferences, from high-thrill roller coasters at Six Flags to family-friendly rides at Edaville.
Hey guys, im staying in cape cod for a couple weeks and I was wondering, what are the best amusmemt larks nearby, (like with biggest scariest rides) within like a couple hour drive
Six flags is the biggest one, out in western Mass. Agawam, not far off the pike.
Second is Canobie Lake, off 93 in southern NH, but the rides aren't as good as Six Flags, but they have a few good ones, on closest to the cape Eadville Railroad has a few ok rides, but more for kids than adults.
Edaville is in Carver, please don't lump us in with cape people.
The scariest ride is route 6 in the summer.
What are you considering "close"? There are no big or scary Parks anywhere on cape.
Go swim with the seals at White Crest beach. Sharks galore. Thrilling.
I'm impressed that your mis-spelling is consistent.
Amusmemt Larks sounds like a World Warcraft boss
I want to start planning out ideas of stuff to do this summer and since I'm still new to the area, I wanted to ask this on here.
Six Flags New England! Also Canobie Lake Park and Story Land (if you’ve got small children)
I prefer Canobie over Six Flags any day. While they don’t have as many big rides, it’s got way more of the classic amusement park feel than the commercial feel.
I’ll agree with that! It definitely has more personality.
Water country, six flags, and canobie, basically
Don't forget aquaboggan. If you can drive to six flags, you can drive to aquaboggan.
If you don't mind line cutters then Six Flags is good.
Someone's salty.
When the sun is blazing and the summer gets hot, Water Country's a very cool spot!
There's no better place to feel and be young! Water Country, have some fun!

Thank you
It's great if you like swimming in a big toilet.
Their jingle has not changed since at least the mid-90s.
I believe it’s actually.. water country, water country, water countryyyyyy, have some fun!
Editing because I had to look; we were both right, yours at the start and mine at the end!
The ocean?
Amusement parks these days are dying. The closest one I know of is Canobie in Salem New Hampshire. Of course there is also Six Flags out west, but that's more of a coaster-goer's dream.
Back when I was little, I would go to the fair in Brockton and they would have crazy extreme rides there. I went on Pharaoh's Fury and got a phobia of high rides following that. Back in 2014, I decided to try to conquer that high ride fear.... and I did. Since then, I have been going to the Brockton Fair every year and after returning last night, I was depressed. The best ride they had was The Tango. My favorite I see there every year (The Stinger) was down. It was like there wasn't much to do.
Ultimately, I want to go somewhere where I could have a good number of crazy rides that throw you into the air without them being roller coasters. I feel like 25 dollars for the day and getting one ride worth a damn was simply depressing.
If you ever go to NYC Coney Island has many wild non coaster rides. Coney Island is what Revere and Nantasket should still be— nice big beach, promenade, great rides and lots of food.
The Big E in September has some crazy rides, no major roller coasters to speak of.
Basically the same location as six flags though, so that may not be best for OP. It’s a bummer, but there just isn’t a ton of roller coaster type entertainment in this state(outside of six flags obv).
But OP is specifically not looking for roller coasters.
The zipper at the big e is the best
Canobie Lake is probably your best bet here. Many of their non coaster rides are more on the family friendly side but they have a few more thrilling ones that are quite good.
Palace Playland up in Maine has a few good thrill rides, and you can just buy tickets for the rides you want to go on as opposed to paying a flat admission fee.
I know Six Flags is overwhelmingly coaster focused but they just added a giant frisbee that's a lot of fun.
I second what someone else said about making a trip to Coney Island. That or just wait for the Big E to roll around.
We're lucky enough to have a number of charming, small amusement parks in New England (as well as Six Flags of course) but most our parks are geared more at families or coaster fans.
I want to take a road trip to visit a few parks this year and I'm wondering what everyone thinks is the best out of the following park clusters. I'm mostly interested in roller coasters.
Kings Island, Kentucky Kingdom, & Holiday World
Six Flags New England & Lake Compounce
Kings Dominion & Busch Gardens Williamsburg
Hersheypark, Knoebels, & Dorney Park
Also, let me know if I missed any in this part of the US. I've already been to Cedar Point this year, so no need to include it.
Definitely Holiday World, Kentucky Kingdom, and Kings Island. All are not a bad drive from each other. I've had season passes at all 3 parks and they're all great. Kings Island has the best coasters, Holiday World has the best theming and water park (the water coasters are a must plus Voyage is incredible, and Kentucky Kingdom is really easily walkable. The lines at KK and HW are also never very long. If you wanted to you could also hit up Indiana Beach after HW, although it's a bit out of the way of the other two parks.
Out of the 3, KI has the best food. If you want to get multiple rides on coasters or plan to go on a weekend, getting the Fast Lane pass might be worth it for KI as wait times can get long sometimes.
KK is easily doable in one day. HW is doable in one day, but the water park deserves its own separate day as there's so much to do there. The water coasters are the only things that have long lines, so if you intend to ride them, immediately go to them when the water park opens (one hour after the park opens). KI can be done in one day if you're okay with not doing every single thing at the water park. The water park there can get pretty crowded. Even in Saturdays and holidays, neither KK or HW felt nearly as crowded as a typical day at KI.
But the coaster lineup at KI is far superior overall to the other parks.
Depending on where you're coming from, if you wanted to you could also hit up my home park (Camden Park) and ride the Big Dipper and "Hawnted" House ride lol.
If you haven't been to cedar point yet, it's just a few hours drive from KI as well.
Kings Island trip is amazing, especially night rides on the wood coasters. Virginia trip is solid too, though you really need to wait to go when Pantherian is open. Hersheypark and Knoebels are also favorites and don’t sleep on Kennywood. I didn’t love the New England parks as much but still a solid trip and you might add Great Escape to those.
Been to Great Escape. Don't really think I need to go back lol. Fine little park, just not much there.
If you start at Knoebels, you can get to Hershey in an hour and a half. From Hershey you can get to Dorney in an hour and a half. From Dorney you can get Six Flags Great Adventure in an hour and a half. From Six Flags you can get to the Jersey shore boardwalk parks in about an hour and a half. This is the play.
Not really interested in Great Adventure currently. Visited years ago when Kingda Ka was still running. Not planning on going back until they build something good to replace it. I've never heard of the jersey shore boardwalk parks. They have good coasters there?
Great White at Morey’s Pier is a CCI which is supposed to be pretty fun. Great Nor’Easter is suppose to be a fun Vekoma SLC also at Morey’s Pier. Sea Serpant is a boomerang at Morey’s Pier. Morey’s also has a SBF Visa spinner. Hydrus is a Eurofighter which replaced Star Jet (which is kinda famous for SBNO in the ocean after Hurrican Sandy hit) at Casino Pier. Other piers have coasters too. You can also hit Nickelodian Universe in Jersey depending on when you are planning a trip, unfortunately their major coaster are currently closed for maintenance until September.
Knotts is a really solid park.
Orlando and Tampa. With the Universal Parks, Disney Parks, SeaWorld parks, Funspots, and even Legoland.
Already been to all of them (except Epic Universe).
In general I'd say Kings Island, KK, and Holiday World is the best bang for your buck. And Beech Bend isn't too far from Holiday World too.
However, I'd prioritize KD and BGW as you can stop by SF America too before it closes for good.
It's with explicitly calling out that SeaWorld parks includes Busch Gardens, in case OP doesn't look it up. BG is a fantastic park; they have great rides (fantastic roller coasters) and they're a top notch zoo.
Looking for something I can easily road trip. I live in the north east, so not really trying to drive all the way to the California, Texas, or Florida parks.
I need opinions- the good, bad, all of it. Thinking of bringing my kids to the Water Park of New England over the summer but have never been. Is it worth it? Good atmosphere? Friendly staff?
I’ve lived in eastern Massachusetts my entire life(38yo, big water park fan), and had absolutely zero idea this place even existed.
Don’t know if that’s a great sign to be honest. Especially with a quick google I see that tickets are 60 bucks a whack.
Watercountry - it’s big. Lots to do. Staff are professional and friendly. Maybe too many people
Great wolf lodge- all of us got sick days after going. Not going back there again
Water Park of New England is the new name of Coco Key in Middleton Danvers
Great Wolf Lodge is the worst. We have gotten sick every time also. Rooms are old and stale, pricing is out of control, staff suck. Never going back again!
We used to go 2-3 times a year. We'd only go when the old lady scored groupon deals. But, everytime we went the little man and myself would get sick. That place is a germ palace. I never saw anyone cleaning, ever.... Well, besides the code brown we saw the last time we went in the lazy river. Finally, the old lady said we don't ever have to go back again. ✌️
Omg what did you guys get while being there??? Yikes! I was considering this for my kids, guess I should just AVOID it lol!
My daughter had her birthday party there last year. The kids had a great time. It is definitely smaller than GWL and in the summer I would say Water Country is a much better option. I believe WC is cheaper if not the same price, and there’s so much more to do. But for a crappy weather day Water Park of New England gets the job done.
There are 2 big slides, a climbing structure with smaller slides, an unimpressive lazy river, a toddler area, and some regular pools. No hot tub that I recall.
Go to water country, have some fun!
Water Country, Water Country, Water Country!
Have some fun!
I went to Water Country once on a drizzly day. It was glorious. There were no lines for anything. I took 30 rides down the various slides. One for each dollar I spent getting in. I was going up and down the 3 oldest slides so fast I started to get a bit dizzy and had to take a break.
At one point when I got to the bottom of a slide, there was a life guard there shivering and miserable. She said to me these words with malice dripping from each syllable:
"Why. Are. You. Still. Here?"
Thank you
Just for info (some people seem confused by the question), Water Park of New England is the former Coco Key indoor park in Danvers. It's a bit smaller than Great Wolf Lodge (also a former Coco Key). I think both are fine although it's been a long time since I've been to either.
If you’ve never had the pleasure of a night ride on The Beast, you’re really missing out. In my opinion, it’s the single best out there.
The thrill of flying through the woods low to the ground, the strange profiling of the homebrew elements throwing you around, and not being able to see anything coming at you, on top of the absolutely deranged helix finale, it’s hard to even think of a better ride out there.
Plus it just looks intimidating with the two single spotlights looking down at you.
I don't trust anyone who doesn't "get" the Beast. Even at daytime it's a fantastic ride. But at night it's a monster.
As someone who is not a fan of The Beast, I feel like comments like this is kind of divisive in the community. It makes one doubt themselves as a thoosie if they don’t “get” certain hyped up rides.
I understand your sentiment but I don't wanna get lumped in with people who say "you're not a real thoosie unless x is in your top 5". My pov is that when I was growing up the Beast was considered one of the best coasters in the world. Then one day I woke up and people started saying it sucks or it's overrated, so I'm kind of lashing out at that sentiment, sorry for that.
I think there are just a very loud minority of enthusiasts who are CRAZY about The Beast. Everyone seems to universally agree that its night rides are really good, but I think it's the 5th best coaster in its park.
The same way a very loud minority of enthusiasts LOVE Magnum-XL 200. Most enthusiasts would say Steel Vengeance, Maverick, and Millennium Force are the top 3 in that park (in some order) - but a small minority very loudly scream "Magnum."
Both minorities also skew toward old heads, but maybe that's just me being a whippersnapper
Same! I don’t usually care for wooden coasters, but The Beast made me really appreciate the craftsmanship of them.
IMO, it's not even the best night ride in the park. The Bat was my favorite.
I think The Beast is definitely competitive as far as "zero coasters" go - coasters that are special to you in a way that may not be quantifiable through stats or obvious features. In the context of that, I sometimes wonder if The Beast is more people's zero coaster than any other coaster out there.
I don't think The Beast is going to top anyone's list based on technical merit or wow factor, especially with a day ride. A night ride on The Beast is a special experience that a lot of people, including myself, feel has a significant amount of nostalgic and sentimental value, but I'm fully aware it isn't Steel Vengeance or Velocicoaster.
That said, The Beast (at night) is still KI's one true standout coaster. Unique, compelling, and always begging for a re-ride.
I love your description. It's commentary like this that makes one realize how special coasters can be in the community. Now I'm really kicking my butt for skipping out on night. I had a local tell me that it's a horrible day time ride for them, but at night it makes all the difference.
I think it's definitely worth a re-ride at night. The difference between a daytime ride on The Beast and a night time one is like, well... night and day lol. I don't think The Beast is bad during the day (just kind of unremarkable) but just like how a lot of Disney/Universal coasters shine due to their theming, The Beast shines at night due to the setting.
So I love traveling, and over the last few years a lot of my trips have been focused on visiting theme parks, in contrast to the years prior where I visited mostly small towns and cities, soaking in local culture, cuisine, etc.
I love my coaster trips but sometimes feel like I miss the feeling of being steeped in the vibe of a particular region or place. Most parks are a bit too manufactured to feel like I'm getting the local flavor. The best non-park trips feel like I've been changed by the experience. Really hard to find that feeling at a park.
One of the biggest exceptions to this was riding the Beast at Kings Island. I rode the coaster six times over a day and a half, but the second-to-last-train-of-the-night ride on day one was the most memorable. The people next to me in line were of varying ages. In front of me were two young brothers, maybe 12 and 15. Behind us were a couple of older guys, maybe in their late 40s or 50s. All were locals and all spoke with the Beast with a striking reverence. Made me realize that the Beast is part of the local culture. When the ride was over and we sat on the brakes, the 15-year-old very pointedly leaned out of the car to reach out and touch the wooden handrail. And I felt changed by having experienced the Beast like that!
My number one coaster. Got 2 night rides this weekend. Unbeatable.
The best time to go is during the Haunt when it's 11 PM and foggy
Looking to find the most intense haunted house, haunted forest, or scare grounds in the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire area. We're looking for recommendations for adults—not family-friendly events—with a focus on high-quality scares, great atmosphere, and a truly fun and terrifying experience. We're hoping to find out the following: • Locations: What are some must-visit attractions? (E.g., Factory of Terror, Haunted Overload, Fright Kingdom, Barrett's Haunted Mansion) • Dates/Times: Are there any special "extreme" or full-contact nights we should be aware of? • Personal Experiences: Which ones have you been to, and what made them stand out (or not)? What's the one place that made you genuinely scream or feel unnerved? Any and all tips are appreciated! Thanks for the help!
Haunted Overload near Durham is crazy intense, even during the day
Seconding this. Haunted Overload is the best in New England IMO.
Barrett's is exceptionally good this year too. I thought it was better than last year.
Barrett’s has their blackout night, which is fun but has gotten less intense over the years. 13th World has an EXTREEM night but it was mostly just silly. Fright Kingdom has a dark maze as part of their usual conveyor belt of fun, and I think they do a low-light or blackout night as well? Fear Town used to do a good and somewhat unhinged full contact night, but hasn’t the last couple of seasons.
I’d say Salem, but you’d have lots of company wherever you go.
The parking lot at Gillette after a Pats loss.
My mother in laws house
Does she sell tickets for the experience?
Ya. Upfront cost is one soul
lol. Bruh. I’m dead. Haha
I went to an amusement park place when I was younger (late 90’s I think). I think it was around Carver, down the street from a Shaws, but I could be misremembering. I don’t think it was Edaville or Starland. I believe it is closed down now. They had a big slide with multiple humps, bumper boats, and maybe go-carts. They also had a ride (pictured) called “Venturer” that was a VR roller coaster. It is killing me to not remember the name of this place.
Can anybody help me think of the name of this place or confim that I’m misremembering and it is actually Starland or Edaville?
Kings Castle in whitman?
It might have been. Did it have bumper boats and the Venturer ride? Those are the things that stick out most in my memory.
Whalom Park ,great place
that was in lunenburg, could it be lincoln park, dartmouth
With the exception of downtown Boston proper ,I know little of anything east of leominster
I know exactly what you’re talking about but can’t for the life of me remember the name. It’s a CVS now
Edit: Supersports in carver off rt 58!
I think that was it! I can’t find any pictures of the place. The only information I can find about it is a Facebook group with a few people that used to work there.
It was Starland! It was located where the 44/58 was built
The Brockton Fair had the VR ride, slide, and boats, but no go carts. Shaws was right across the street as was a blockbuster and a burger King. Edaville RR seems the more likely answer, though
I used the exact same points system as this guy: https://www.reddit.com/r/rollercoasters/comments/kc8j2e/other_these_are_the_top_73_parks_in_the_united/
I used the most recent 2024 Coaster Bot poll to do this: https://coasterbot.com/votecoasters-fullresults2024
Did this because as great as the first post is, it's been 5 years and I wanted to post an updated one.
Very cool rankings. The point system works solidly, though I might prefer an inverse curve where each step down the rankings loses fewer and fewer points. As in, the gap between having the #1 vs #2 coaster is more impactful than the gap between having the #375 vs #376 best coaster. And of course, limiting the list to the top 500 rides hurts parks like Canada’s Wonderland, which have lots of depth coasters that might be worth a very small amount.
Still, for the purposes of determining the best parks on the continent, this does the job well. Those modifications would probably only have a small impact.
I will continue to promote the methodology above, utilized by CoasterGuy23 in this now two-year old video: https://youtu.be/6uGfJEtsJvQ?si=okO55jlYdKR1rcEE
Valleyfair deserves to be down there, but seeing Mt Olympus above it is depressing. Oof.
Wasn't expecting to see Holiday World that high, even with The Voyage.
Not many beat Holiday World’s Top 3. Good Gravy is a good family coaster too
It's got some great rides, but I think a park ranking based on overall lineup quality/quantity along with a top 500 North American ranking instead of the top 500 worldwide ranking this one uses would drop it a few spots. Top 20 still for sure, but there's some solid lineups sitting below it on this list.
Most of the top 15 would probably still be the same parks in a different order, but headliners skew some of these rankings wildly. Fun spot Atlanta beating out Adventureland Iowa sticks out a lot. AF1 looks great, but if you asked me which park lineup I'd rather spend the day riding, I would absolutely pick Adventureland with no hesitation.
I mean it is based on coaster collections and not the park itself, and while Valleyfair definitely has a more complete collection, I think most enthusiasts prefer the coasters at MTO over those at Valleyfair. It also doesn't help that it seems that more enthusiasts have been to MTO than Valleyfair just because Valleyfair is kind of out of the way of any other parks asides from MOA.
Idk if it depresses me more that Valleyfair got beat by Final Destination 3: The Park in general, or that a coaster that regularly derails beat Excalibur. Renegade did beat Hades 360 at least.
Mt Olympus is being carried hard by its proximity to sfgam imo, I really can't imagine that many people would go too far out of their way to visit a park that has 4 coasters total, 2 of which aren't worth riding except for the credit. Especially given the parks reputation.
Free everything, great ops, and fantastic maintenance teams makes for a lot of good will.
Sure, but none of those things were a part of this ranking.
Post AlpenFury must be higher than Carowinds, no?
Curious what rankings may change next year for SFoG (adding Georgia Gold Rusher, a fun ride) and SFGAdv (because, you know).
Or were this year’s additions/removals already factored in?
No additions were factored in bc they wouldn't be ranked (this is last year's poll). However, I tried to remove some that are no longer in operation, tell me if I missed any!
Was wondering whether or not Shellraiser was included as well. I know it technically operated in 2024 but also kinda not really.
I want to plan a date for me and my gf. We both love animals so I’m looking for the peoples opinion on the best place to see animals in mass. Could be a zoo, aquarium, or something else.
Let me know what you guys think is the best spot in the state! Thanks!
Butterfly museum in Deerfield ma I think. There’s people’s pint for true farm to table food about 15 mins away. Dinner only.
There are many local breweries in the area of Magic Wings butterfly conservatory, if you want to add that into your date.
I'll add: Berkshire Brewing Four Phantoms Artisan Beverage Amherst Brewing
Winslow Farm Animal Sanctuary. Norton.
Do you know if you are able to pet the animals there?
I really like Drumlin Farm in Lincoln. It had a variety of wild and farm animals.
I love Drumlin. Grew up close to it and went to camp there as a kid. In my opinion, this time of year isn't a great time to visit. Definitely better in the late spring and summer.
Trailside Museum is highly underrated if you don't want the hassle/expense of a big zoo. Go inside and check out the rattlesnake.
Southwick’s zoo will be your best bet. It makes the Stone and Franklin zoos look sad. The aquarium is great, but it’s on the smaller side.
I definitely enjoyed the southwick zoo way more than the San Diego Zoo. You can actually see and interact with the animals and the sky line ride going over all the animals is awesome!
I need to go there, I live a few miles away but have never been. My library has free passes.
Came here to say this. They have sky gondola thing, and a forest full of deer you can walk through and hand feed the deer. It would be a cute date.
Southwick's! They have a deer park, petting zoo, and parakeet enclosure where you can feed by hand. A gondola over the zoo and a tram tour through woods to see elk. They also have an above average restaurant for a zoo - Galliford's.
