What Redditors are Saying

Best Amusement Park in Michigan

TL;DR Michigan's Adventure is widely regarded as the best amusement park in Michigan, featuring the standout wooden coaster, Shivering Timbers. It's praised for its pleasant atmosphere and clean environment but criticized for its limited ride lineup.

Michigan's Adventure Highlights

Michigan's Adventure is often highlighted for its star attraction, Shivering Timbers, a traditional wooden roller coaster that enthusiasts rave about [1]. The park offers a mix of rides and attractions, including a solid waterpark, making it a versatile destination for families and thrill-seekers alike [1:1]. Despite some criticisms regarding layout and food quality, many visitors appreciate the park's friendly staff and cleanliness [1:8], [1:12].

Comparison to Other Parks

When compared to other parks like Great America, opinions are mixed. Some argue that Great America has a stronger attraction lineup and better maintenance [2:1][2:2], while others feel Michigan's Adventure holds its own due to Shivering Timbers [2:4]. The park is often seen as a more relaxed and less crowded alternative, especially on busy days when the waterpark draws most of the crowd [5:2].

Historical Context

Michigan's Adventure has grown over the years, absorbing smaller parks such as Pleasure Island [4:1]. It has become the largest amusement park in Michigan, maintaining a nostalgic appeal for those who remember its earlier iterations [4:6]. Despite being labeled Cedar Fair’s "most neglected park," it continues to attract visitors with its unique charm and potential for future development [5:4].

Visitor Experience

Visitors often report positive experiences at Michigan's Adventure, noting the park's well-maintained environment and enjoyable ride operations [5]. While wait times can vary, strategic planning around popular rides like Mad Mouse and Wolverine Wildcat can enhance the visit [5:1][5:3]. Overall, Michigan's Adventure offers a delightful experience for those willing to explore its offerings beyond the headline attractions.

(Mom said it’s MY turn to post the MiA lake shot)

Shivering Timbers is obviously the star of the show here—it’s a top three traditional woodie for me, only behind Mystic Timbers and Voyage. Every enthusiast should come get some laps on that bad boy. But I really think the park as a whole is a very pleasant experience; the atmosphere is great, and the supporting lineup is decent as well. People kinda like to dunk on this park, but it’s definitely worth a visit!

PS if you’re the couple I asked were “coaster dorks” I meant no offense 😅😅 I’m a coaster dork too!! I wanted to compare and contrast Titan vs 208 reTrak! And that’s dorky!

You’d think Michigan’s Adventure was as popular as Cedar Point with how much it’s popping up on here.

But seriously, I think even aside from Shivering Timbers, it’s just a clean, well laid-out (other than the incomplete horseshoe) park. Friendly staff, basic but decent food, a variety of rides, and a solid waterpark.

Between continued (controversial) retracking on the woodies, and a lot of fresh paint around the park, it’s lovely seeing the park stay on top of TLC.

Haven't been since the 90s but I always thought it was a cool park for the area people sleep on how beautiful Michigan is when you get north and west . Keep the good work up on the YouTubes me and the wife are fans

Honestly, I thought the 208 reTrak was great. I was worried because it’s a disaster on Mine Blower IMO… but the transitions are seamless on ST, and it’s got a bit more bite than Titan, which works for the ride I think. I’d welcome more on some of the return run hills.

Agreed on the cleanliness and friendly staff, it’s always spotless at the park.

agauh · 3 months ago

Dude. The park is not well layed out. That’s just silly - especially when the train is down. The food is absolutely awful and has been for decades. Finally, anyone who sees the track refurb as controversial is missing the bigger picture - it’s wild they put any money into the coasters at this park at all.

MidcourseDiscourse · 3 months ago

Yeah, the “layout” was maybe poor phrasing. I moreso meant for being such a small park, it has great presentation. Good sight lines, and it’s a pretty park. Actual park navigation is not good as you said. I would kill for there to be a path behind Wildcat to finish the loop.

I agree about the retracking. Sure, I would prefer Shivering Timbers to get like full precut track, but if it’s between the woodies getting NO love, or getting some rough spots replaced with steel track? I’d take the latter.

The issue is definitely location. I don't think it's as bad as its reputation but if you don't live in Michigan or northern Ohio, it's a fucking hike to get up to that park.

I remember the one time I went there I drove 6 hours out of my way round-trip to fit it on my trip. I don't think the park is remotely worth that inconvenience to do more than once

Cedar Point is better for that if you're coming from the west. The border stores near 1-90 are way cheaper than the ones near Muskegon.

I'm the type that's happy if a park has one elite coaster and that's ST to me. I actually like the rest of the lineup (I LOVE Arrows and dig SLC's) but realize most folks would disagree

Once again, I have to ask if this is even a competition, since Great America can't even compare to Michigan's Adventure. Great America has a far stronger attraction lineup, plus a lot more things to actually do in the park. Michigan's Adventure feels SO barren in contrast.

That sounds incredibly wrong, Great America deserved the win in my opinion.

Discovery Kingdom because of the "huh" arc (see r/DiscoveryKingdom for the full story), but all jokes aside, it has a good blend of zoo and theme park elements, it reminds me of a Busch Gardens park in a way. Great Escape, while basic, has a unique fairytale forest that sets it apart from the other Six Flags parks. Each of them are pretty good. In my opinion, West Coast Busch Gardens wins.

The best part of Bob-Lo was the boat ride there and back. It was a small park that had a couple of decent rides but it paled in comparison to Cedar Point. Never made it to Edgewater Park but I heard the same about it.

I have fond memories of the dance floor on the boat as we traveled back from a long day of fun.

Boblo also had great rides. They weren't the tallest, fastest, world's xx purple coasters like cedar point, but they had that right mix of speed and turns to just be fun. I love coasters and I loved boblo.

I grew up in the trailer park right down the street from there. It was only ever open for certain special events. Our cub scouts group had a party there, and I was way too scared to go on the sketchy rides.

I recently drove back to the area to kayak at the former pickle park across the street (called Heritage now), and it's still weird just seeing the old park as an empty field.

Michigan’s Adventure

Took the 2.5 hour drive from Indiana today to visit Cedar Fair’s “worst park.”

While the coaster lineup is a tad underwhelming, Shivering Timbers is as good a wood coaster as you’ll find anywhere. It’s great. I love airtime, and this coaster is all camelbacks. It’s awesome.

The park was clean and well cared for. Ride operators were adequate.

It was extremely crowded, but my fiancé and I had a great day. Shoutout to the footlong hot dogs at Wildcat Grill.

Awesome! How long were the waits? I'm planning to go next year, and having a baseline for wait times on a busy day would be helpful.

4 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 3 years ago

We went earlier this summer and it was busy but mostly in the water park so hard to say if mine was accurate. But I’d say corkscrew 20 min, Wolverine Wildcat 10, Zach’s zoomer 30, max mouse 45, shivering Timbers 10, the inverted coaster 15. Timbers was a delightfully short line all day. Zach’s you can see from most of the park so we tried to see how long it was anytime we were nearby. Mad mouse was 90 minutes in the app and definitely long but shorter than anticipated.

3 upvotes on reddit
C
Claxton916 · 3 years ago

It depends on the temperature, if it’s hot out people are gonna go to the water park more than the dry park. For a “normal” busy day:

Mad Mouse has the longest queue at like 90 minutes it has a shit capacity because they only allow one car to go through the coaster at a time.

Wolverine Wildcat is usually around 50-60 minutes, there’s only one train for the ride and it can only take 24 riders at a time.

Corkscrew would be second at 50-60 minutes. It’s an older arrow corkscrew model so it only operates with one train and the ride ops can be a bit sow sometimes.

Shivering Timbers is usually around 40-50 minutes. Depending on the ride ops and speed at which riders take care of their stuff it can be a bit faster. The ride’s length is perfect because as one train it’s the final brakes the other train is getting ready to leave the station (again, depends on how fast guests and ride ops are moving)

Thunderhawk’s max wait time is like 20 minutes tops. This year they’ve had great ride ops who’ve been bookin it to check restraints and dispatch.

If you want to get rerides in I’d recommend Fast lane. All the fast lane queues bring you right up to the station so it’s got some good value to it.

USA Mega Trip: Day 21, park 18! [Michigan's Adventure]

Posted by MidsummerMidnight · in r/rollercoasters · 1 month ago

The main reason this park is on the schedule is because of Shivering Timbers, but this park in general feels pretty.. Lacking? It's tiny which is nice for the legs but despite there being a few things todo here, it just felt empty and in need of some TLC.

First off, I hate Arrow Mad Mouse with a passion. Second one on this trip and the way they slam your back is horrific. Wolverine Wildcat is pretty fun actually! Nothing special but overall it's a decent ride with some recently added new track which I feel helps a lot. As for Shivering Timbers, awesome ride, I enjoyed it a lot! I maybe expected a bit more airtime, but overall it was very fun! A little rough in places but really not that bad tbh. Did front and back and both were pretty great!

Headed to Cedar Point now, beyond excited to return. Staying at lighthouse cabins.

Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio is arguably the best roller coaster park in the world, I grew up about 2 hours away so we'd go there a few times every year. It's right on Lake Erie, the drive there was through farm country and along the lake and small towns, just an idyllic All-American place for many reasons.

Grew up less than two hours away, right on the other side of the National Park. My best friend’s family kept season passes and brought me along pretty frequently and we always had a blast. After moving away, I always thought it was probably a rinky-dink little place that I remembered fondly just because of nostalgia. Went last year after close to 20 years for the first time as an adult and was impressed. Dollywood punches way above its weight for a relatively small regional amusement park. Atmosphere is great, it’s kept very clean, food is way above par for amusement park food, staff is friendly, and the rides are great! Some of the newer coasters have pretty innovative designs beyond just “UP DOWN FAST” and many take full advantage of the unique mountain landscape. There’s no alcohol sales in the park which I’m sure some people would count as a point against it, but I think it reduces some of the trashy guest behavior you deal with at other parks. I mostly compare it to Carowinds (the other park I’ve been to most often) which is kind of a dump in comparison.

Definitely. It's not the biggest. But I've had worse times in Universal Studios and Disneyland. Id rather have a great time in a less crowded place with better food and cheaper prices, then a huge place with better rides and crowded with too many people.

I went with a large group on a day when the morning was solid downpour. Not long after we got there, it stopped but it was enough that we had the park effectively to ourselves - we all got to ride, front seat, on every roller coaster there, multiple times. It is one of my single fondest memories!

Went there in August 2019, it sucked. It was way too expensive. Bought a park pass but the park pass didn’t include the water park. Ate at two restaurants an Asian and one on the African themed area, both cost about $160 + for three people. A hamburger alone was $15.00. Was only able to ride 3 rides the first two days. I suggest going to Universal instead.

I was thinking of this and Lutz's in Au Gres. This is my first time learning about Wenona Beach, I've always known it as a trailer park.

Used to love to go to Edgewater as a kid. The Wild Beast wooden coaster would thrash you about but good...

I loved it too. It was an interesting place. So much shit crammed into a small space.

Critique my weekend trip?

Posted by rosepuffle · in r/Muskegon · 3 months ago

I'm a Michigan eastsider heading out your way in a few weeks with my sister and 2 10-year old girls. We have tickets to Michigan's Adventure on Sunday as a reward for a Girl Scouts cookie sale. Here's my loose tentative plan that I've put together for my weekend. Open to feedback, I'm a total outsider and want to make the most of our brief visit!

We're getting in on Friday and I want to head to The Deck for dinner and wander the area until dark, then head back for the night.

Saturday I want to grab donuts and coffee at Dockside Donuts, then head to Muskegon State Park where we can do a hiking trail, have picnic lunch, find a beach for swimming, and grab ice cream at Ruth Ann's, before heading back to the Airbnb and grabbing pizza carryout from Lombardi's.

Sunday we'll find somewhere to grab breakfast before heading to Michigan's Adventure for the ticketed event, and then head back across the state.

Any of this bad?

I second hoffmasters and or lake harbor park.if you’re looking for ice cream in the area of the two the whippi dip on Old Grand Haven rd. Is great and closer than Norms.

Where is your Airbnb? Sounds like it might be in Lakeside if you're doing the Deck and Dockside Donuts? If so, you might want to consider Hoffmaster State Park for your hikes and beach day. Not much difference between the two parks in terms of hiking and the beach, but Hoffmaster will be a lot easier to get to from Lakeside. Then Frosty Cove for ice cream.

For breakfast on Sunday, I'd recommend either the Lakeside Cafe or Steak N Egger.

Or depending on what time you're getting ice cream, if the Lakeside Emporium is still open, definitely stop in there for some ice cream or other candies. Hometown Creamery downtown is another good option.

Nothing against Norms, really, but the only draw there is the huge portions. Honestly, the portions are too big, and the last time I went, I got a small and was over it by the time I was only halfway through with it. And it's right next to the causeway, not really a great atmosphere to sit and eat ice cream. But I don't think there are too many people in Muskegon that share my opinion of Norms.

If they want to go on a walk while they eat their ice cream the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve is right across the street.

Yeah literally about a mile or so from Dockside Donuts- that's the second vote for Hoffmaster in this thread, so I will check that out! And thank you, I've been struggling trying to find breakfast for Sunday!

Stick to Lakeside Cafe for Breakfast. It'll be quick and easy to get to from your Air BnB. It also has pretty typical breakfast fare and it tastes good. I know on whirlwind weekends its nice to have a low key meal toward the end.

As others mentioned, Lakeside Emporium is next to Dockside. It's a big candy store. If the weather is poor, Hometown Creamery in downtown Muskegon has indoor seating and ice cream. Downtown is pretty small so its easy to walk around.

None of this is bad. I second the norms ice cream. Don't order anything above a small though. They are cheaper then everyone else and their size portion is bonkers. A large is like 6 scoops. It's... a beautiful thing.

Hoffmaster is great. If you want to have a quick stop to feed some ducks just down the road is lake harbor park(also a quick walk to the beach and phenomenal trails). It's maybe a 4 min drive but opposite way or norms so id stop there before hoffmaster.

Your pizza choice is fine but I will offer the age old muskegon battle of which is better. Fricanos verse scribs. I lean fricanos which has a awesome upscale venue on muskegon lake next to downtown muskegon where as scribs is great but more take out, same as your choice. Glenside pub is another awesome sit down that's in my opinion better than your choice and we feed a family of 6 for around 60 bucks before tip. Their Italian cheese bread is the best in town.

This sounds like a great plan. Only order a small at Norm’s as others have mentioned. I prefer Hoffmaster for hiking but you can’t go wrong either way.

If there’s a rainy day, check out the Lakeshore Museum Center or the Art Museum. I hope you enjoy your time in Muskegon

Get ice cream at Norm's, not Ruth Ann's.

I live in Whitehall, just down the road from Michigan's Adventure, and that's a better weekend than I usually have here LOL - the park notwithstanding (I'm not an amusement park guy.) The rest sounds great though! Another great pizza place is Louie's, which is also just down the road (Whitehall Road) from the park. Hobo's Tavern in North Muskegon is a great dinner spot. Enjoy your time in the area! Should be great weather.

best amusement park in michigan

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Amusement Park in Michigan:

  1. Variety of Rides: Look for parks that offer a mix of thrill rides, family rides, and attractions for younger children to ensure there's something for everyone.

  2. Location: Consider the park's proximity to your location or other attractions you may want to visit in Michigan.

  3. Seasonal Events: Some parks host special events, festivals, or themed days that can enhance your experience.

  4. Amenities: Check for amenities such as dining options, rest areas, and guest services that can make your visit more enjoyable.

  5. Reviews and Ratings: Look at visitor reviews and ratings to gauge overall satisfaction and experiences.

Top Recommendation:

  • Cedar Point: While technically just across the border in Ohio, Cedar Point is often considered the best amusement park for Michigan residents due to its world-class roller coasters and attractions. It boasts 70 rides, including 17 roller coasters, and is known as the "Roller Coaster Capital of the World."

  • Michigan's Adventure: If you're looking for a park within Michigan, Michigan's Adventure in Muskegon is the largest amusement park in the state. It features over 60 rides, including a water park, and is great for families.

Both parks offer unique experiences, so your choice may depend on the type of attractions you're looking for!
