Anime sidekicks often play crucial roles in supporting the main characters, adding depth to the story, and providing comic relief. Here are some of the most celebrated anime sidekicks based on community discussions:
Rock Lee from Naruto
Rock Lee is a fan-favorite character known for his determination and unique fighting style. Despite not being the main character, he has left a significant impact on fans due to his epic battles and underdog story. His ability to compete with top-tier characters like Gaara made him a standout sidekick [2:1]
[2:3].
Isaac and Miria from Baccano!
These two characters are beloved for their comedic antics and charming personalities. Their presence in Baccano! adds a layer of humor and light-heartedness to the series, making them memorable side characters [2:4].
Robert E.O. Speedwagon from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Speedwagon is often cited as one of the best sidekicks in anime. His loyalty and support for the Joestar family have endeared him to many fans. He is frequently mentioned as a quintessential sidekick who plays an essential role in the series [4:1]
[4:8].
Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist
Alphonse is not only a sidekick but also a co-protagonist alongside his brother Edward. His gentle nature and strong moral compass make him a beloved character. He provides both emotional support and formidable combat skills throughout the series [4:3].

People like Koichi?
And you don’t???
I think he's a good character. But he is too annoying for me to like him.
Suggestion:
Mokke (Hanako-kun)
Can I subtract votes from Zenitsu?
Sorry, democracy doesn’t work that way
I wouldn’t really call Tohru a sidekick.
But she is a maid
I recently got into Kaichou wa Maid Sama! and are absolutely loving "The Three Idiots", they are really freaking funny, and that me realize that characters like them sometimes get overlooked in favor of the MC. So, in honor of the overlooked comic relief, name your favorite sidekicks, secondary, characters, or just characters you think are underrated in the comments!
Bye-Bye!
Rock Lee (both funny and epic), my absolute favourite character in Naruto and possibly my favorite character in anime. He really should have been a main character throughout.
> He really should have been a main character throughout.
Dude, those leg weights were insane tho.
That single moment was my favorite moment/fight. The fact this side character was able to compete and even scare Gaara who was the top tier at the time, so much hype.
Isaac and Miria from Baccano!
Noice.
Seo from GSNK
Mako from Kill la Kill
Wolfgang Grimmer from Monster
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun
Speedwagon obviously
Well, thread's over. Time to go home.
Ah.
Who is the side character? Isn't Lelouch the GOAT in his own anime?
Thorfinn, Vinland Saga
In season 1 he gets overshadowed by everyone and their mom, and then in season 2 he becomes one of the most interesting and likeable characters in anime history
100%
I’m usually the type of person who favors side characters as my favorite, but Vinland Saga is probably the only one where I actually favor the protagonist (Askeladd and Hild are close behind, though).
Vagabond, Vinland Saga, Ashita no Joe, Violet Evergarden and Dororo
Controversial: Mob Psycho 'cause the side characters are just as lovable.
Apparently time for a rewatch lol I think Geass has an amazing supporting cast
I never watched Cowboy Beebop (if it is from this anime) but I thought he was the main character
The question in the thread is which MC doesn't get outshone by their sides
He is. The question is asking for anime where the side characters are NOT more likable than the MC.
OP presented it in a convoluted way so your confusion is understandable.
Berserk. Guts. Haven't seen one hater for the MC. The most likable character throughout.
Idk, there are parts of the series where Guts does things I really don’t like, especially in the Black Swordsman arc. I still think he’s an awesome character and the most interesting, and he’s for sure the most famous from the series. But I wouldn’t say he’s the most likable.
I saw this meme I can't find the video but the guy said
"name 10 berserk Characters but they can't be anyone who was friends with Guts"
And the guy couldn't name any
Sort of like with the whole name 10 solo leveling characters no shadows
I really liked Judeau, Nosferatu Zodd and Caska pre Eclipse.
But yeah, Guts is solid.
As for me, I couldn't have asked anything better than the man and the legend himself, Robert E.O. Speedwagon.
Who are your favorites?
Alphonse Elric
Does Mako from Kill La Kill count?
I am pretty sure she does. Considering how much she helped Ryuuko on adventures it definitelly counts.
No other answer but SpeedWagon
the only true answer
a very fast wagon
One Piece: Blackbeard is one of the overarching villains of the entire anime and one of the most powerful pirates in the world, being a Yonko (Emperor of the Sea), the only know person to have two Devil Fruit abilities, and the current third highest bounty in the world.
How does Luffy meet him? As an ugly drunkard he got in an argument with over pie.
Everyone knows the twist nowadays, but it was pretty damn shocking when Spider-man's best friend's Dad turned out to be his ultimate villain.
Tooru- Jojolion
Started off as some random hospital assistant that was Yasuho’s ex. Then he started appearing more and more. Then he reveals himself as the user of WoU.
Kira literally appearing as a background extra (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable)
He is just a handsome candy shop owner
Who is this handsome candy shop owner?
The man with balls of steel, Erwin Smith
Shinzō wo sasageyo!
My soldiers, rage! My soldiers, scream! My soldiers, FIGHT!!!
Are they still making his spin off show? Or is that cancelled
Reigen is my absolute favorite anime character of all time but I wouldn’t call him a side character, he’s more of a deuteragonist

They count as a collective hive
Alex Louis Armstrong
Aleister's >!hair!< is the obvious answer. Such a tsundere but a companion that will never leave his(her?their?) side.
As in >!Corozon!<?
Tsuchimikado, none of the options are anywhere near as entertaining/fun as him
Tsuchimikado isn't a sidekick.
Yeah he isn't a sidekick, he's more of a frontkick
Right he’s a siscon
Index will always be second fiddle to any girl in the franchise
I like the fact that Index is considered "sidekick" despite the whole series being named, you know, A Certain Magical Index.
That was supposed to be a gimmick in which every time a female character in arc gets one
Index was kept so people can follow easier
Still would been cool to switch name if series with new arc.
Reject Index
Evolve to Outdex
Mark Space.

Bros arc got over but still played an imp role as a side character in other parts
Jojo has some amazing side characters, polnareff in part 3 had soo much of screen time I thought he was the protagonist
Doesn't polnareff have more screentime in part 3 than jotaro
He even played a very small role in Golden Wind despite the conflict not affecting them directly.
I sometimes forget Dazai is a sidecharacter.
One true answer
who hurt his bulma
I'm legitimately surprised I had to scroll this far down to see Speedwagon.
those two guys from world trigger
Underrated characters from an underrated anime
Otto Suwen from Re:Zero
Ramen guy from Naruto
And his soba noodle daughter
The legend who survived even goku black
Stroheim
No way stroheim is underrated he has major fanbases almost equal to speedwagon :D
Yes we all live DADDY stroheim😋
.
I meannn he’s not really a sidekick but Jean Tannen has gotta be in the convo
Yea I feel like you can argue Jean and Locke are co-main characters rather than him being the sidekick. But I agree Jean is a great choice if he counts.
I think he’s clearly the sidekick. No shade to Jean at all but Lockes name is in the title.
Best one this side of Gamgee
Um you mean Carl is the best side kick, right?
Yeah. This is a fight for second place.
He’s not just the best sidekick in all of fantasy, he’s the best friend. Everyone needs a Sam.
Sorry, Samwise actually grades out of "sidekick" and into "protagonist"
Night Eyes
Had an okay sidekick in Fitz.
Gotta be the greatest wolf in all of fantasy. I just can’t imagine another. Amazing how she wrote him. He ends up being in almost a fatherly position with Fitz 😂 Had to take a moment after the cave - just to reflect. Beautifully done in my opinion.
Gaul was consistently the most ride or die character through the whole series. Love him so much
Why else would he need to carry a full kitchen, if not to help balance?
He's such a good sidekick, he's maybe not a sidekick!
