TL;DR
Cross-Platform and Integration
For users who need cross-platform functionality, Zoho Notebook is recommended as it works across multiple platforms [1:1]. Google Keep is also praised for its ease of use and platform compatibility
[1:6]. Notion is another option that integrates well across devices, though it does not offer offline access
[1:7].
Ease of Use and Organization
Apple Notes is frequently mentioned as a simple and effective tool for note-taking, especially for users within the Apple ecosystem. It allows basic formatting, color changes, and organization in folders [2:3],
[3:2]. For those looking for more complex organization systems, OneNote offers notebooks, folders, pages, and subsections
[2:12].
Advanced Features and Customization
Obsidian is highlighted for its strong note-linking capabilities and local file storage, making it highly customizable and flexible [4:2],
[4:4]. Notion is noted for its feature-rich environment, but some users find it overwhelming due to its complexity
[2:9].
Handwritten Notes and Templates
For users interested in handwritten notes, GoodNotes and Notability are popular choices. GoodNotes offers a variety of templates, although they may require a purchase [5:4]. Noteful is suggested as a budget-friendly alternative with many templates available
[5:2].
Unique Options
Freeform is recommended for its digital whiteboard capabilities, offering infinite canvas space and intuitive design for organizing thoughts and plans [5:5]. Nebo is noted for its AI features like note summary and quizzing, ideal for users who want advanced functionalities
[3:1].
I'm a profuse note-taker, but I'm experimenting with taking notes on my laptop and phone. Anything I should know? What app works best for this?
here are some I've tried
bundled notes: has nice design and a lot of functionality, but I found myself only using it for small notes and things like grocery lists. (it's a subscription to access it on laptop)
notion: use this for longer form notes and jotting down creative ideas
taskade: more formal and not necessarily a note taking app, but it has note taking capabilities. i use this for organizing and sharing stuff with partners relating to business
Oh, Notion might be what I need. Thank you!
I've posted reviews of 40+ Android note taking apps if you want to follow r/NoteApps or https://noteapps.ca
I tried many but unfortunately I always can't seem to stop using Google keep. It's easy to use and you can pretty much use it on every platform.
Has it gotten less glitchy in the last few years? It was pretty inconsistent last time I tried it. The formatting "rules" drove me nuts.
Plus... Google is reading all your notes to self, right? I mean, they already have your emails if you use gmail, so it might not matter, unless you are privacy-conscious.
Me too. It's just seamless for me and has all the functions I could ever need.
Especially the effortless sync. Works so well
UpNote for sure. You won't regret it. getupnote
I would say Zoho Notebook is a great app if you're looking for something that works accross multiple platform. I was using Google Keep and Microsoft To Do before but Zoho seems to be the one that I would settle for.
For context, I'm in high school and use a mac.
I'm looking for a great and easy to use note taking app that has some good features.
I've tried using notion, however I have spend more time playing with the look of the pages than I have actually taking notes, so I think I need a change.
I'm would love a very quick and easy app to use which can sync between devices. I would also like it to have some sort of organisation system (folders etc).
The majority of my notes are based off of school things, however I sometimes use notes for personal use too.
Any other recommendations for productivity apps would also be great too.
Take a look at https://noteapps.info/. Not sure who created it but it's a super-solid resource.

u/ercohn this is a Gold mine! Great resource.
I had the same thoughts and doubts as you. Notion is a great and powerful tool, but for me it’s overwhelming a little bit for everyday usage mostly to save your stuff and notes.
Apple notes it’s not that powerful but I think it is enough powerful for most people. Simple, fast, free of charge, allows to share notes and folders with someone. For me - this is the best choice
I have an ipad and Apple Pencil. Apple notes for me is just amazing. So simple and easy to use. Allows you to do basic formatting, color change, organise in folders, etc. I also have iphone n mac so love the integration
Yeah, I think Notion has a lot of useful features and somewhat easy to use. But as an elder millennial, I struggle figuring out all of its integration and I spent more time trying to figure out than actually using that functionality.
I still use my Apple notes and a physical notebook.
At the moment apple notes is what I'm thinking of going with. How are your experiences with it?
Very good. it allows me to easily add new notes, organize them with folders, and share them with my SO. Also, text formatting is enough for me, you can add headings, checkboxes, bullet and number lists, sections, tables, and so on.
The only thing that I'm missing is some kind of option to create a collapsable part of a note (notion allows it :).
There is a learning curve with obsidian BUT what you get out of it is full control of your notes in a format that can be used pretty much anywhere. It is a good app with a good community around it.
i think its just easy to use tbh and very simple and stores my notes locally on my laptop , and lets me actually focus on taking notes plus a lot of helping plugins in it, i tried notion but i found it overwhelming tbh ,
Obsidian
When I open a note in obsidian can I go at the bottom quickly? I use apple notes I have to scroll down to the end
i use onenote!! has the organisation system you’re looking for (separate notebooks, folders, pages, sub sections) and syncs across all devices :)
As a college student I want something that is easy and simple with great organization.
Free would also be a plus but I know not always ideal. Thank you!
For 95% of people, Apple Notes will do everything they need. Note that I didn't say "want", I said "need" :)
Good-notes is pretty solid, the free version only gives u three notebooks but in my opinion, that would be fine. I would also recommend using free form, it is an infinite canvas and so what i do is use free form to write random things in lectures and then organize them in the goodnote notebooks. It is also free
Thanks so much!!
If you type out your notes, I would so recommend Opennote.com; they've been a literal lifesaver for the past couple of months. Automatic flashcards based on my own notes, and it connects to my GDrive too and it's free with a pro version thats pretty cheap
Search for "infinite canvas" on the App Store. With all the power that iPads have now, people are moving from linear apps like notability to infinite canvases.
Here's a rundown of the most popular apps, pick one based on what you like
Apple Notes + Freeform : Great for quick note taking or as a rough book to just scribble down ideas. Not that good if you want an organised notebook for class or if you want to do a bunch of drawing
GoodNotes 6 : Was once great, now is kinda littered with bugs and their subscription is annoyingly overpriced.
Nebo : Great app especially for their infinite canvas, also has a subscription, but includes some flashy AI stuff like note summary, look up and quizzing. Works best if you have neat handwriting/type
Noteful : Cheap and gets the job done. Unfortunately it lacks OCR if you want to search handwritten notes. Layers and tags are a big plus for organisation.
Kilonotes : Free tier offers upto 7 notebooks with unlimited pages, great set of writing tools, can make flashcards directly from the notes themselves and really good OCR
This was helpful thank you so much :)
Hi guys,
What is the best Note taking app that you use when learning?
Is it for all subjects, or do you find different ones for different types of subjects?
I keep hearing about Notion. Anyone else use it and find it helpful?
Thanks in advance.
Obsidian
- Strong accent on note linking
- Local files
- Simple markdown format
What is it about Obsidian that makes it better for learning, The map view? From what I can tell, this is what is unique about it.
Honestly, I'm not that loyal to Obsidian itself : what I really care about is using local Markdown files. After spending way too much time in the past jumping between tools, I've come to realize that flexibility and long-term accessibility are non-negotiable.
Obsidian just happens to be the best local Markdown tool right now. It's fast, customizable, and it gives me full control over my notes. I can sync them however I want, and if one day I need to switch apps, it's not a nightmare, it's just text.
Once you've felt that freedom, it's hard to go back to fully cloud-based tools with proprietary formats. It starts to feel like a step backward, especially when you're trying to build a long-term knowledge base.
Compared to Notion, one of the biggest differences for me is how customizable the whole experience is: themes, fonts, colors… It might sound like a small thing, but when you're spending hours and hours in a tool to learn and think, it really matters to have a space that feels like your own.
For learning, hands down paper notebooks. Writing has a better reinforcement mechanisms for your brain.
I can appreciate that. My only issue is the formatting of hand written notes. I have to spend energy about formatting so I don't end up messing up the page with scratch lines because I put the sub-title in the wrong place.
How do you do it?
Get the cheapest notebook possible and just write. The goal isn’t pretty or pristine, it’s writing the information down. Function over format. It is so easy to get stuck on planning instead of doing.
onenote :)
Pen and paper ,
When you’re writing notes by hand vs typing them—or rewriting them later to reword or better understand the material—different parts of your brain are involved, and that affects how well you learn and remember the content.
Writing by hand (pen and paper) activates areas like the sensorimotor cortex (hand movement), the visual cortex (recognizing shapes and spatial layout), the hippocampus (memory formation), and the prefrontal cortex (attention and organization). It also engages the cerebellum, which helps coordinate fine motor actions.
The key benefit is active encoding—you’re summarizing, organizing, and thinking as you write. Research shows that handwriting leads to stronger memory retention because it slows you down and forces you to process the information more deeply. (One popular study on this is Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014—“The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard.”)
Typing or using a notes app mostly uses the prefrontal cortex (planning and organizing), the motor cortex (finger movements), and the basal ganglia (for routine actions like fast typing). While typing is faster, it’s often more shallow, especially if you’re just transcribing. You’re less likely to rephrase or mentally process what you’re typing, unless you’re intentionally doing so.
Rewriting and rewording notes (especially by hand) is where deep learning happens. You’re actively pulling from memory processing language and using the prefrontal cortex for organizing and rephrasing. You’re basically forcing your brain to re-understand the information in your own words, which strengthens connections and improves retention.
If you want to actually understand and remember what you’re studying, the best method is to: Take notes by hand Reword or rewrite them later (this is when you would type up your notes) Review them periodically
I say this, and stand by my reasoning because you specifically asked about note taking for learning, apps are great but if you really want to learn and remember long term, this is the way.
Obsidian
Looking for the best app that works for note taking with an Apple Pencil.
I’ve tried Notability and Goodnotes, but don’t want to commit to purchasing either or these because they seem expensive for that they do.
I would love something that has built in templates for calendars, planning, etc. Goodnotes seems to only have paid templates, and I tried importing ones I had made but I don’t really want to fiddle with them every time I want to take notes on something.
Would love recommendations, or to hear from people who purchased either of these apps and found them to be worth it.
Noteful is best app and lifetime subscription only USD 5. Contain many templates.
As far as I know Notability and Goodnotes are the preferred apps, if its a one time purchase just pay via apple it will use your sim card and then send you a receipt
Goodnotes
Don't overlook freeform, digital whiteboards are so intuitive when you get the hang of them. As much space as you could want in any direction, Copy and paste any element you want, Draw your perfect planner setup and copy up a whole year of it, Put your notes in flow chart form and collate it into text right there in the same space. I've found it insanely useful for getting my mindspew down on something.
Notes+ is completely free and has some templates as well
Hey everyone, I am pretty deep in the productivity tool world and just want to share a few good tools if anyone is looking for one.
Digital
Apple Notes: simple and actually pretty powerful.
Bear: a beautiful markdown focused app
Roam: a powerful note taking app used for heavy research and writing books
Physical
Good old paper and pen
Remarkable: A digital writing pad that feels like your actually writing on paper
Some good resources
Nothing for the Android front?
Evernote and Simplenote could be good options.
Standard Notes
Found one called Osmo (getosmo.com) that’s amazing for online meetings, especially long ones. Not exactly like the traditional note taking apps like you mentioned above where you have to type down everything. Looks like they use voice tech to save you from doing it all with your hands
Sounds cool!
it dosent work any more :-(
I'm using notion.
Obsidian, it's frocking awesome
I'm going to be taking a very important online course.
What's the best way to take notes?
Just a Google Doc?
What do you guys use?
I use an iPad with an Apple Pencil
handwriting using the Notability app (Apple Notes also works)
backed up by a pen and paper notebook
Also important; note storage and organization
and data backups
I use Clutter for almost anything I work on. It's much easier to retrieve information on Clutter than on any traditional page-based note-taking systems.
Logseq
Obsidian
Google Keep or One Note
I'm curious—what's your go-to note-taking app? 📓✍️ I've been exploring options like Notion, Evernote, Ainotebook, GoodNotes, and more, but I'd love to hear what works best for you, especially for staying organized with all those lectures and assignments. Drop your recommendations.
I'm a messy guy, the type who gets a lot of things I wanna write down but never get the time to actually organize what I write, I've tried the solution available but none fit my criteria, either too complex or missing a key functionality, so I built my own solution.
Notability is pretty good
Hi there!
I've been an avid Notion user for a couple of years for many reasons. It's an incredible tool for keeping track of most my tasks but I don't like it for taking notes or studying. It just takes too much time to load pages and has no offline feature, which is a plus to me.
Also, I would like my notes to be in a universal format, like markdown, so they can be exported with pretty ease. Also, it's a plus if it's open-source and must be free. There are plenty of free available options but I'll leave to those you have greater experience in the area :)
What I've tried so far:
Purpose: To take notes while I read books.
Many thanks
Obsidian.md is the best! Give it a try
I've been porting some of my notes from Notion into Obsidian for the last hours and I confess Obsidian overpassed my expectations.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Not only a note manager but also a good editor with plenty of features and an amazing community
Thank you for your suggestion
Good to hear, mate!
Wait until you grab some nice plugins and themes. It can take some time to find the real gems. You could spend some time in their Discord or their forum. Real case studies and a very helpful community.
I'm a fan of Google Keep.
Have a look at UpNote.
It supports Markdown and has a lovely interface.
Logseq, multi platform, open source, free
Notion + https://2anki.net/ intead of Remnote. It's free, plus you have no storage problem.
I stick with notion because it's free, multiplatform, and I have no storage limit.
Plus Notion seems to be the most durable because it has lots of users and a big community.
Thank you!
>Thank you!
You're welcome!
I've had my ipad since march but I haven't taken a lot of notes on it simply because i cant find a note taking app that's usable without paying a subscription. I've tried using the apple notes app but I the experience was mediocre. If anyone has any recommendations that would be greatly appreciated.
I'm kind of bouncing back and forth between Notedrafts and Noteful.
Notes is the obvious choice since it has the most features that you would normally be paying extra for. What features are you looking for?
I second this. Notes is worth giving a try and learning. I use to bounce around a few, but depending on what you’re looking for the default app could do you just fine. Mix type with text, include links pictures and files. Attach reminders. There’s a lot that it can do. It looks plain, but if you take the time to utilize its features it can be great. Plus, if you’re in the ecosystem then you can access it everywhere and not have to worry about it being an iPad only app. Use your phone, iPad, Mac, anywhere.
I just use Procreate straight out
Kilonotes
I use Notes and Notability.
