What Redditors are Saying

Best Apps for Public Transport in Seoul

TL;DR

  • KakaoMap and Naver Map are the top recommendations for navigation.
  • KakaoBus is specifically useful for bus schedules and availability.
  • T-Money Card is essential for using public transport.

Navigation Apps

For navigating Seoul's public transportation, KakaoMap and Naver Map are highly recommended. Both apps provide detailed directions and are available in English [1:2], [2:6]. While Google Maps is improving, it still lacks the comprehensive coverage that these local apps offer [1:5]. Naver Map is particularly praised for its ease of use by foreigners [3:2].

Bus and Taxi Apps

KakaoBus is a popular choice for checking bus arrival times and seat availability, although the latter feature may not always be accurate [1:4]. For taxis, KakaoTaxi is widely used and can be accessed with international phone numbers and credit cards [2:1]. Uber is also available but operates more like a traditional taxi service in Korea [2:4].

Payment Methods

The T-Money card is an essential tool for using public transport in Seoul. It can be purchased and topped up at convenience stores, though only cash is accepted for recharging [3:1], [5:7]. The Climate Card might be a cheaper option if you plan to use buses extensively, but for most travelers, the T-Money card is sufficient [5:3].

Additional Tips

For those traveling from Incheon Airport, airport buses and trains are convenient options for reaching Seoul [2:4]. If you require additional assistance or have mobility issues, ride-hailing apps like KakaoTaxi or Uber can provide a more comfortable travel experience [2:1]. For language translation, the Papago app is suggested to help with communication barriers [3:2].

KakaoBus. It will give you the estimated arrival time for the bus. And will tell you how many seats are available, but that’s not always accurate.

Personally I prefer naver map cos I have been always using that since I moved here. But kakao map is fine too.

Google map is improving but still not good enough.

How to get around Seoul?

Posted by Any_Cat_5557 · in r/seoul · 5 months ago

I’m travelling to Seoul with my mom and we are planning to splurge on transport cause my mom can’t walk much. What is the best ride hailing app in Seoul? Also, we are arriving past 10pm, I heard the bus transfers from incheon airport to the city (we are staying at dongdaemun) is very convenient. Are they still available after that time?

Thanks for the answers.. I find researching for Seoul (walking routes, places to eat, maps…) on the usual apps a bit tough as compared to Japan. And seems like a lot of the info is not in English.. Are there are tips on this? I feel like I’m looking at the wrong place!

Kakako Taxi is widely used, however, Uber will be fine too. Uber recently launched Taxi XL, which supports carrying up to 3 luggages. If you want to know how to use Naver Map in English, please refer the following post: Link.

I was just in Seoul and we Ubered everywhere. Much easier than hailing a taxi. Depending on time and location, we managed to get a ride anywhere within 2 minutes, up to 10 minutes of wait time.

I'd vouch for downloading the Kakao T app(taxi hailing app), Uber in Korea isn't what it is in other countries, it's just a taxi hailing app, but you'll probably have a better chance at finding a ride through Kakao t since not many taxi drivers are registered under Uber. Depending on where you'll be staying in seoul, I recommend using the airport express train from the airport to seoul station. Depending on where in seoul you'll be staying, it may simply be a subway stop or two to your hotel(seoul subway is decently accessible from what I've noticed). Speaking of getting around, ditch Google maps. Instead, download naver maps(for navigation) and Kakao maps(for more honest reviews on restaurants)

Is Naver good for walking navigation? I’m going in the fall and have been bookmarking places on Naver (attraction, restaurants). Will mostly do a lot of walking. I normally rely heavily on Google maps when traveling so I’m a bit nervous having no experience with Naver/Kakao.

After 10 bus will still be available but better check when's the last bus. Uber is a good option but most commonly, people use kakao taxi but not sure if you need a Korean number for an account.

I have a US phone number but i was able to download Kakao Taxi and use my US based credit card for payment in Korea. I also used Uber in Korea with the same app I have in US. Both worked great in Korea. I saw Kakao Taxi’s everywhere and they were easy to book. Uber Taxi’s I didn’t see as much but when requesting an Uber, it did not take that long either. If there are mobility issues and money is not a problem, just use Kakao Taxi or Uber. With 2 people taking a taxi, the cost is not that much more than two people taking the subway. And the taxis will take you front point A to point B to the doorstep. I took a large black minivan taxi from Seoul to Incheon airport because I had 4 very large suitcases and did not want to lug them to the bus stop or the train. Cost was about 100,000 won but well worth it for us.

Transportation in Korea / How to get Cash

Posted by Gorudenboii · in r/KoreaTravelHelp · 8 months ago

Will be in Korea for the first time in February.
I've been to Japan, where moving around directions-wise is very simple with `Google Maps`, and using the metro/bust/train-system can be paid via AppleWallet using digital metro-cards. It is also simple to get cash from convenience stores, since they all have an ATM.

Wondering if there are similar tools that work in Korea. App like gMaps, digital-metro cards, ATMs everywhere.

For example I'll be around: `Seoul, Seoul 07318, South Korea`. Whats the best way to get there from airport. Is there a recommended app.

Thank you

I visited Korea in April 2024. Everyone recommended the Naver Map to me. I used that app, and it worked perfectly. 😊 It’s also worth downloading the Papago app, which helps with translating text from Korean to English. I suggest purchasing a physical T-money card. You can only load it with cash, but you can top it up at any convenience store, and then you just need to tap it every time you board or exit public transport. 🙂

I exchanged cash at the airport, but I only needed it for public transportation. Everywhere else, you can pay with card.

1 upvotes on reddit
eugene4312 · 8 months ago

for map, you should download "Naver Map" or "Kakao Map"
in Korea, we use a system called "T-Money"

Due to fee/commission issues, Apple Pay currently doesn't support T-Money. It would probably be better to buy a physical T-Money card.

Advice on T Money card and travel to Incheon Port

Posted by Stick-Electronic · in r/koreatravel · 2 months ago

Hi, I am due to land in Seoul in 2 days time at Incheon Airport.

I need to get to Seoul Station and around the city for 2 days before heading to Incheon International cruise terminal on the 16th.

Can someone advise me of my best public transport options? I am traveling with my 4 year old child.

I have researched a number of options but it's not clear whether the T money card, the climate card or the Seoul pass are the best option for me.

Just use T-Money because you will need to use it to travel to Incheon.

Using climate card may be cheaper if you take a bus within Seoul a lot ( More than 6-7 times per day).

But in the end, you might save only $5 from your 2-day trip.

climate card : 62,000 KRW (another 3,000 KRW for physical card)
t money card: 3000 KRW (for physical card)

you cannot take shinbundang line, and subway stations not in Seoul

subway minimun fare : 1,400 KRW
bus minimun fare : 1,400 KRW (for city bus), local shuttle bus 1,250 KRW

if you take more than 67 times? climate card
less than 67? t-money

you can buy t-money card at any convenience store at korea, (card OK, apple pay OK)
But only cash is available for charging t-money card.

if you use t-money card, i recommend you to buy one for each person.

You can also get a transfer discount, and the subway can only be used by one person with one card (the bus can be used by multiple people with one card)

I visited Seoul last week for 4 days with wife and 2 kids and found it difficult to hail a taxi and ended up using Uber to request one, which worked well for us.

EDIT: I got the T Money Card and it worked great for us. You can purchase one at the CU (convenience store) at the airport but must load it with Korean won.

Honestly, we were miserable out visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace with the heat/humidity so didn't do much outdoors after that besides an evening cable car ride up Namsan Park. (Fun, but again, too humid). One highlight was dipping toes in the Cheonggye-cheon Stream, which we recommend for dealing with the heat. They have underpasses along the stream where people would sit under for relief from the sun. There's a chain of stores called Artbox that your kiddo may like where my kids enjoyed browsing through for some cute Korean keychains and stationery.

What are your must-have apps for public transport in Japan?

Posted by frozenpandaman · in r/movingtojapan · 1 year ago

I'm moving to Nagoya soon and am a big fan of public transport & exclusively get around using it. I'm looking for an app similar to Transit, Citymapper, or OneBusAway – the key feature of these apps is, given your current location, they display all transit stops (for train, bus, tram, etc.) close to you and show you how soon vehicles will be arriving to stops close to you.

Here's a screenshot of Transit, and here's what OneBusAway looks like. You can also click on a route, see it highlighted, and track where vehicles are on the route in real-time.

Is there anything similar app that functions in Nagoya, or for other cities across Japan? An English-language display option isn't strictly required, but would be a plus!

Apart from this, what (besides Google Maps) are your must-have apps for trains (local, regional & shinkansen), buses, and other forms of public transportation in Japan? Thanks!

This feels like an advertisement for an app...

But I use yahoo 乗換案内 to get alerts on my routes to work. It also can give you directions for stops. It's all in Japanese though.

OneBusAway is a free app that is run by the Seattle bus system (bus system is called Metro Transit). Everybody in the Seattle area uses it. So it’s not an advertisement… but I’m not sure there’s something totally comparable. My son- from Seattle, now lives in Tokyo- just uses Google Maps for transit info in Japan.

Edit: Missing words

frozenpandaman · OP · 1 year ago

OneBusAway is indeed pretty specific to Seattle (and a few other regions) but Transit is worldwide! …Unfortunately they don't support anywhere in Japan. I was just using that as a comparison to show what feature I'm hoping for in some other app, i.e. that can show me stops near me and what time stuff arrives in real-time.

It kind of does, but I've used the Transit app myself in the past and I understand the desire for specific features. They didn't link to any apps, either, just used screenshots, so I think it can stand.

I'm not entirely sure why you need that view, might help if you explained the need.

But you can get the functionally in Google Maps. If you search for "nearby public transport", it shows you a list of nearby stops/stations in the hit list, and the lines are drawn in on the map. You can then click a stop, either on the map or in the list, to see the what lines stopping at that station in the near future.

frozenpandaman · OP · 1 year ago

It seems like this is the closest thing I can find so far, but I mentioned how this isn't exactly easy to do in another comment as well:

I don't want to have to type that in every single time, and then one-by-one click on all the stops it finds, go back and re-adjust the zoom level, &c &c.

Ideally there's a better option… and lots of people have made all sorts of those for various cities across the world, following the same general UI that I talk about in the OP! But I guess this just doesn't exist for transit in Japan (yet – Citymapper has a beta version of Tokyo, so, slow progress…)

1 upvotes on reddit
F
frozenpandaman · OP · 1 year ago

Nope, that doesn't show where the transit stops are by me, and typically is slow at refreshing GTFS data for all worldwide transit systems. I use transit multiple times a day, nearly every day of my life. I'm looking for something to help me figure out where close by me is – not just plan journeys. It's a different use case from GMaps.

Sorry you’re getting downvoted. Google Maps definitely has issues in Japan. When you get outside of the big cities, it is missing entire train routes, and schedules can be inaccurate. It’s gotten better with buses, but pre-pandemic, it stranded me out in the countryside near Fujikawa because it didn’t understand which direction / which side of the road the bus stops were for, and they were over half a km apart, sent me to the wrong one, and I missed a bus that only came every four hours. (That one I had a lengthy discussion about with a college buddy who works on Google Maps). When I was a Tokyo newbie, it also made the unhelpful suggestion of taking the Shinkansen between Shinagawa and Tokyo. Since this is a post on mass transit, I won’t even get into what a disaster their biking instructions are.

That said, I do just end up using Google Maps most of the time anyway. I’m not sure if it will meet your use case, but try Japan Transit Planner from Jorudan or Navitime.

So wanted to know if there are apps in English that I can download to help me go around city on public transportation, make payments etc

  1. is there an Uber equivalent that accepts foreign credit cards?
  2. is there an e payment app that accepts foreign bank issued credit card?

Any other useful apps, please share too.

You shouldn't worry about using cash though cuz there are literally no pickpockets in Seoul.

Most kakao taxis I have been on let you pay with card tho and my foreign card has always worked! Also I think many food delivery apps dont let you pay in cash anymore because of covid, but not sure if that is still accurate.

2 upvotes on reddit
PouletRico · 3 years ago

Most people in Korea don't use the big apps from the US like Uber, instead they have an equivalent made by Korean for Korean. Sadly most of those apps simply does not accept foreign credit card, and with a touristic visa, you can't open a bank open or get a Korean credit card.

So the solution is to pay cash. Almost no alternative. KakaoT allows you to order a taxi and pay cash, same with 요기요 for ordering food (they don't have English app, but they have a website so you can use Google Translate on it).

I heard Gmarket (equivalent for Amazon) accept foreign cards, but haven't tried it myself.

Last solution would be to ask a friend with a Korean card to order for you and you pay him/her cash, that's what I did when I wanted to order clothes from Naver.

Transport etc. card (WOW vs Trip)

Posted by Fast_Owl_2469 · in r/koreatravel · 6 months ago

I've seen a wide variety of options, from a basic T-Money, to Seoul Climate Card, Namane, Wow Pass and the latest, Trip Pass.

Has anyone ever heard of/used Trip Pass? 100k downloads on the Play store, but zero reviews. Their insta ACC also has 12 followers so it feels dodgy.

Trip Pass is legitimate but maybe still getting mature, they finally made their physical card slightly easier to get by making them available at GS25. Their original intention was to register your passport and make it easier to purchase with tax refund (that only works at limited stores), or make entry into a casino or hotel check in faster.

Edit: TripPass will require a slightly more intrusive passport and selfie/face scan, keep in mind if you are concerned about those things

The basics of all of these cards are pretty much the same, just small differences in their services, hopefully the competition means they will be adding features and services. In general, if you have a credit card and cash, these cards are not a neccessity but maybe nice to have (as a backup, easy to top up transport card, if you don't have a physical credit card, need a local korean payment, want the small discounts at some stores, or other niche reasons).

There's tons of pro's and con's but if you ask me for one sentence for each:

  • Wowpass - Good if you have foreign currency/cash and also want to refund your balance easily
  • Namane - Good if you are in a group, want to manage multiple cards
  • TripPass - If you want to shop at the tax refund stores they support, but less popular than the first two

I wouldn't compare pure transport cards like TMoney and Climate card to these other cards which are payment+transport. BTW, there's many other cards for payment options: EZL(the IC version that supports store payments, not the transport only RF version), Korea Travel Card, HanPay, Sendpay, BCL prepaid cards, and others I am probably not aware of.

best apps for public transport in seoul

Key Considerations for Public Transport Apps in Seoul:

  1. Real-Time Updates: Look for apps that provide real-time information on bus and subway schedules, delays, and service changes.

  2. Route Planning: Choose apps that offer route planning features, allowing you to find the best routes and transfers between different modes of transport.

  3. Language Support: Ensure the app supports English or your preferred language for ease of use, especially if you're not fluent in Korean.

  4. User-Friendly Interface: A clean and intuitive interface can make navigation easier, especially for first-time users.

  5. Offline Access: Some apps allow you to download maps or schedules for offline use, which can be helpful if you don’t have data access.

Recommended Apps:

  1. KakaoMetro:

    • Offers detailed subway maps, real-time updates, and route planning.
    • Supports multiple languages, including English.
  2. Naver Map:

    • Provides comprehensive public transport information, including buses and subways.
    • Features real-time navigation and route planning.
  3. Subway Korea:

    • Focuses specifically on the subway system with easy-to-read maps and schedules.
    • Available in English and other languages.
  4. Citymapper:

    • A global app that includes Seoul's public transport options.
    • Offers route planning, real-time updates, and various transport modes.
  5. Google Maps:

    • While not specific to Seoul, it provides reliable public transport directions and options.
    • Includes real-time transit updates and is user-friendly.

Recommendation: For the best overall experience, I recommend starting with KakaoMetro and Naver Map. They are widely used by locals and provide comprehensive information tailored for Seoul's public transport system.
