TL;DR
Cronometer
Cronometer is highly recommended for its accuracy and comprehensive features. Users appreciate its ability to scan barcodes and track micronutrients, which provides a more holistic view of nutritional intake beyond just calories [1:9],
[4:1]. The app's focus on Calorie Restriction Optimal Nutrition (CRON) makes it a favorite among those looking to not only count calories but also ensure they are meeting their nutritional needs
[5:1].
Lose It!
Lose It! is praised for its simplicity and user-friendly interface. It offers a free version that many find sufficient for basic calorie tracking needs. Users can create their own recipes and log food in advance, which is particularly useful for planning meals ahead of time [1:2],
[2:2],
[5:5]. Some users have even opted for a lifetime subscription due to the app's effectiveness and ease of use
[2:3].
MyFitnessPal
MyFitnessPal remains a popular choice due to its extensive food database and the "Quick Add Calories" feature, which allows users to input calorie counts without having to enter specific foods [3:2]. However, some users have expressed frustration with certain features being locked behind a paywall, such as barcode scanning
[5:1]. Despite this, many users continue to return to MyFitnessPal for its familiarity and consistency
[5:3].
Other Notable Mentions
These apps offer various features catering to different preferences, from simple calorie counting to detailed nutritional analysis, making them valuable tools for anyone looking to manage their diet effectively.
I (26M) am looking to lose 100-120 pounds and I plan to do so by using a calorie deficit. In order to do so, I would like to use an app to track everything I do.
I've used MyFitnessPal, but it seems in order to add calories to my meals, I need to have the premium subscription. I've also used Chronometer and Lose It!, but it seems like they will not let me manually put in my calories.
If anybody can recommend an app that doesn't cost anything and allows me to manually put in my calories for the day, I'd appreciate it.
LoseIt or Healthi both have free versions

What do you mean by this?
I was looking for an app to manually enter the amount of calories I'm eating during a meal. Thankfully I just tried MyNetDiary from the first commenter and it does just what I need.

Hi all,
I am on a mission to lose weight, 4 stone to be precise as I am overweight (yes I know it's going to very hard) and I am going to have to very disciplined in what I eat and doing more exercise!
I wanted to know what are the best apps to download for for tracking what you eat/counting calories? I have heard many people say that apps can be very helpful with your weight loss journey and can even be a motivation tool! Please can you recommend apps that have a simple interface and are easy to use. I dislike apps that have a lot going on and done have a clean interface.
Thank you
Lose It! Such a good app
I hate paying for apps, but I paid for a lifetime subscription to Lose It. It is extremely well made and I wanted to support the developers.
How much did it cost? Is it easy to use?
I use Qalzy. I think it's the only one that's 100% free and has no hidden subscriptions. It also has an AI scanner and a barcode scanner for quick logging
I use Chronometer but I am in Australia and it has a lot of supermarket items. I have found it accurate paired with the food scale.
Felllow Aussie here, never heard of this, will check it out
Standard woollies, Cole’s, aldi?
Yes they have a lot of those products, I've measured aldi freezer items and Woolies and Coles brand lite milk and branded items and they all line up with the listed calories on the packaging. Not sure how extensive the selection is but they have majority of the things I use and buy daily across the three majors.
Hey, I'm looking for an app to track calories, but I'm having trouble finding one that does what I want. Id like to:
Be able to just enter calories. I don't want to track macros or anything like that. It's fine if the app also has that feature, but I don't want to have to put in a specific good. I already have the numbers, I'm just tired of using my notes app and a calculator. I just wanna put numbers in it and see a sum total for the day.
Have the calorie counts separated and stored by day, so that I can look at previous days and edit/see what my count was.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
Edit: Exploring My Fitness Pal and Lose It! right now to compare UI, but these seem to work! Thank you all so much for your help.
Honestly for what you're looking for, MyFitnessPal might still be your best option even though it has all the macro tracking stuff. You can totally just ignore all that and use the "Quick Add Calories" feature, just punch in your numbers and you're done. No need to search through foods or anything.
I get the frustration with over-complicated apps when you just want something simple. Most of these apps are built around the food database approach, but they usually have those quick-add options buried in there somewhere.
Actually this is exactly why we built Welling AI differently (It's available on the app store). Instead of forcing people into rigid tracking methods, you can just tell it what you ate conversationally. But for your specific use case where you already have the numbers calculated, MFP's quick-add is probably the fastest solution.
Try Diet Pulse. It's better than the all the paid apps
Try Lose It! . It helped me lose over 40 pounds.
Thanks! Do I have to enter foods, or can I just do numbers?
Yes it does give you option to just add calories, and you can track breakfast/lunch/dinner/ snacks separately super easily
I love my net diary, lets you scan barcodes for free, no annoying ads trying to sell you anything. Just mark and be done
I recently have been using a new AI calorie tracking app called “Ate It”. I have been enjoying it so far since it allows me to enter my daily meals quickly! I like that I’m able to just take a picture of my meal and log it especially since sometimes I’m either busy and don't have time to enter it manually and this feature really is so convenient! I would definitely recommend that you give it a try! https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ate-it-ai-calorie-counter/id6743716326
This app seems pretty good. I just signed up, and my first impression is great. Love the simple UI.
What apps are you using ?
Cronometer! Easy to use, lets you scan barcodes, free version is great (pro version is also great), helped me a ton with weight loss
I also use Cronometer and love it! Being able to scan items makes it so much faster 🤣
Thank you ! I’ll give it a try
I second Cronometer. It’s super easy to use.
I used to love MyFitnessPal - but also haven’t tried anything else other than weightwatchers
I did too, but it now constantly asks me to pay and makes it difficult to route back to the free version.
Yeah I just downloaded the one mentioned “cronometer” - will give it a whirl.
MyNetDiary
Macrofactor
Lose it
I use the tracker in my Fitbit app. I've tried My Fitness Pal and Chronometer but I didn't like them as much.
My Fitness Pal has been the one I have been the most consistent with over the years. I've used others- and keep coming back to MFP
I used MyFitnessPal.
Lose it allows you to log food in advance. This is awesome for planning for events.
Plus the interface is more user friendly. It gives nice prompts and I loved learning that I lost the weight of a lamp or corgi.
For me, I used to use My Fitness Pal, but between the inaccuracies in their food database and then putting barcode scanning behind a paywall I switched to Cronometer.
I like Cronometer because the database is at least reasonably accurate (although smaller in terms of processed and fast food chain foods), it has barcode scanning, and the big eye opener for me was the micronutrient tracking.
While Cronometer does have the basic calorie tracking down pretty well, I think their philosophy of Calorie Restriction Optimal Nutrition (CRON) is a better gauge of how healthy you are eating. I find that for the most part I can satisfy my nutritional needs in about half the calories I used to eat, I feel better and more satisfied with my food, and I’ve gone from 245->180 while using their app. I generally try to satisfy about 80% of my nutritional needs in as few calories as possible when first eating, and then after that I have the bulk of the calories to spend however I want - or just save them for my caloric deficit. It’s an interesting philosophy they’ve got going on and definitely helps avoid malnutrition while on a caloric restriction diet.

Interesting! Will try it.
I used to workout a few years back and didn’t really focus much on my diet that time. But this time, I’m all in and want to keep track on my calorie intake. What’s the best way to do this? Any apps or methods you’d recommend?
Im using app and kitchen scale to track my calorie intake. Although not entirely correct for complicated meals , but i get the general idea.
Which app are you using?
I use lifesum because it is simple and easy to understand for me . There are other good apps which give a wide variety of food too , totally depends on you.
Just use what works for you
Chatgpt is the best just write up how much oil what food you are cooking and give it more detail it will give you far more accurate calories than any app tracker app as it doesn't account for oil or ratio of foods(like if you are eating mutter paneer what the ratio of you using mutter and paneer you can just write how much it you are using in chatgpt and get more accurate answer)
This sounds good, use ChatGPT to know the exact details and then log them in any tracking apps, will definitely give it a try
Eating the same foods daily and weighing them using a kitchen scale and calories tracking apps like HealthifyMe and MyFitnessPal.
I used My Fitness Pal and a 300 rs kitchen scale from Amazon
Cal AI /s
Which apps are you using for tracking your calories? Want to start but don't know which one Ishould choose. Preferably free or onetime purchase
myfitnesspal is a really popular one; has paid features, but you can get everything you need on free version
Cronometer for full control on macro and micro
Stupidsimplemacro tracker is goated. One time purchase too.
Following to see answers and hopefully reasons
MyFitnessPal - I use the free version BUT I'm assuming the paid version has more features available.
I've been using MyFitnessPal to track my calories, it felt a bit confusing at first, but it’s now become an incredibly useful tool. You can track just about everything — food, exercise, and weight — all in one place.
The food database is amazing. It includes virtually every type of food, even specific brands and supermarket own-brands. The app automatically logs the calories and the breakdown of carbs, fats, and protein, so it's easy to see how you're doing throughout the day and whether you're staying within your calorie deficit.
Once I got the hang of it, it only takes a few minutes to use — especially now that I tend to eat the same meals regularly, which makes logging even quicker. I also like that I can enter any exercise I do, and it adjusts my daily calorie target to reflect that.
It has helped me spot small calorie savings and resist temptations — just being aware of what I’m eating has made a big difference.
I've included details for MyFitnessPal along with a few other similar apps, including how to download them and where to find them. Just one other thing to mention — I use the free version, and it’s been more than enough for what I need. There are paid subscription options available with extra features, but I haven’t found it necessary to upgrade.
Best for: Overall tracking & macro awareness
Best for: Simple interface and visual weight goals
Best for: Low-carb/keto tracking or insulin resistance
Best for: Micronutrient & nutritional analysis
Best for: Guided meal plans and fasting options
One other thing to mention - MyFitnessPal also syncs with my step tracker. It is a really good way to keep calories and exercise all in one place.
Thanks, I use MyFitnessPal, it has been really helpful
The meal plans in Yazio are pretty helpful
Do you pay for it?
Hi, I use MyFitnessPal, it's free. There are subscription levels if you want more, but the free version is enough for me.
Hi all,
So I am looking to lose a little bit of weight and overall eat healthier. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any calorie counting apps? When I’ve looked on the App Store there are absolutely loads and I’m not sure which one to try.
If anyone could suggest any which they use or have used in the past I would be very grateful!
Thanks for reading!
I use My Net Diary - it has so many foods that you can search for, a barcode scanner and a simple ability to log food in any measurement you want to. I know a lot of people say My Fitness Pal is good but they don’t have a simple to option to add in grams of food etc, just the serving size which I find to be just another step as sometime I eat more/less than that
Another vote for MyNetDiary. I’ve tried pretty much all of the mainstream apps and have used MyFitnessPal for years but have now swapped to MyNetDiary. It’s clean, relatively intuitive to use (and when it’s not the answers are easy to find)
I was always a free user on MFP because the price of it for a pretty crap experience is astronomical!
I do pay for MyNetDiary because the Recipe Function is a paid feature. But it’s £2 a month only.
My Fitness Pal is unnecessarily complex if the purpose is weight loss only.
I like Fitia a lot, it makes tracking calories so much easier. It even has a meal plan if you prefer following recipes and foods. I use premium version, but it’s also free and if you want to go premium it’s one of the most affordable options out there
I use FitBee for the free barcode scanner function. The food database isn’t as good as Myfitnesspal, but it’s easy to enter nutrition labels by scanning them so it’s not a huge deal when I run across things it doesn’t have yet.
I personally like Cronometer, which was recommended by my dietician. It tracks a lot of nutrition data beyond calories and macros, like fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, etc., and has really handy reports. Also has settings for fasting and keto approaches
I love Cronometer been using it, only issue I have is that they ramp up the ads since 2024. Besides that it does have a lot of features as a free user.
i switched from MFP to Cronometer and it’s sooooo much better
I agree, I started with MFP and now using LoseIt
LoseIt is the best
Why do you think lose it is the best
More features, easier tracking , you can add your own foods if it’s not already on the database, they give you a plan to follow so you can reach your goals, weight tracking etc
Best apps for tracking calories
Key Considerations for Calorie Tracking Apps
User Interface: Look for an app with an intuitive and user-friendly interface that makes logging meals easy and quick.
Food Database: A comprehensive food database is crucial. The app should have a wide variety of foods, including restaurant items and brand-name products.
Barcode Scanning: Many apps offer barcode scanning for quick entry of packaged foods, which can save time.
Customization: The ability to customize your goals (e.g., weight loss, maintenance, muscle gain) and track macronutrients (carbs, fats, proteins) can enhance your experience.
Integration: Check if the app integrates with fitness trackers or other health apps to provide a holistic view of your health.
Community and Support: Some apps offer community features or support groups that can help keep you motivated.

Recommendation: If you're looking for a well-rounded app, MyFitnessPal is often considered the best due to its extensive features and large community. However, if you're interested in a more detailed nutrient breakdown, Cronometer might be the better choice. Choose based on your specific needs and preferences!
