Best Base Locations in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Lilypad Islands and Delta Station Dock are popular choices for their central location and access to resources.
  • Consider building near Twisty Bridges, Red Crystal Cave, or Blood Kelp Trench for strategic advantages.

Central and Resource-Rich Areas

Building a base in a central location with access to multiple biomes is highly recommended. The Delta Station Dock offers a central position on the map, allowing for an amphibious base with thermal energy vents nearby [3]. Similarly, the edge of the Purple Vents and volcanic biomes near Delta Station provides proximity to various resources and allows tracking of Chelicerates with a scanner room [3:3].

Popular Biomes for Base Building

The Lilypad Islands are a favorite among players due to their potential and proximity to Omega Labs [1][3:4]. The Twisty Bridges also offer a good location, especially near thermal vent borders at 100m depth, providing ample space for large rooms and moonpools [1:7]. Another intriguing option is the Red Crystal Cave, which some players find ideal for their first base [1:4].

Late Game and Strategic Spots

For late-game bases, locations like the Tree of Life or waterfalls entering Lost River near the Ghost Leviathan are suggested due to their safety and strategic positioning [5:2]. The Blood Kelp Trench is another favored spot, offering easy access to resources and proximity to the Lost River [4:6].

Considerations for Base Expansion

When choosing a base location, consider areas that allow for expansion and have a clear purpose, such as resupply or comfort [2:1]. Additionally, ensure your base has plenty of space to grow, as your initial setup may evolve significantly as you progress through the game [2:1].

Avoiding Problematic Areas

While exploring potential base locations, be cautious of areas like the Crab Field, which can be challenging due to aggressive fauna [5:3]. If bonesharks become a nuisance, using a thermoblade or avoiding them with a seamoth can help manage encounters [5:5].

ORIGINAL POST

Just wondering what your favorite base building locations are? I just started another playthrough after a while and wanted to build a big base somewhere convenient. In my first playthrough I built in the Lilypad Islands but wanted to try somewhere new

I like to reroll in Subnautica until I find a good spawn spot. Then I build a smaller base later in the game closer to endgame.

You know that floating dock where there's a bench of Penguinlings they were studying? I threw down a bunch of solar panels up there and ran some Power Transmitters to power a base just a little bit towards Delta Island where there's a big open canyon that provides plenty of building space while being somewhat centrally located.

That's where I've built last time! It's definitely close to most key places.

I've built a forward dry base in the glacier as well.

Twisty bridges and thermal vent border near 100m depth facing to the twisty bridges huge canyon. Solar power works, and has place for 2-3 large room as well the moonpool and the seatruck dock.

Without going into details on plot and keep it spoiler free can say:

a) best locations are where you can easily reach 3-4 different bomes with relative ease, so scout a lot and find a spot that also has a nice view (you will be seeing it a lot)

b) have plenty of space to "grow", your initial base may change a lot as you progress....there is plenty of stuff that is additive to your current base and its interesting to try it out and expand.

c) give it purpose, by having a clear idea of what you want out of your base...a place to sleep, to re-supply, or manufacture, or sit and relax. Function guides design.

For me it's Delta Station Dock, very central on the map and also allows for an amphibious base half on land half in the water. Land for increased structural integrity and then dips into the water for moonpools and water purifiers. Has thermal energy vents nearby.

I normally build my base in the lilypad zone near the entrance to Marg’s base, the deep lily zone, and the Crystal Caves. I’m also building a base at the edge of the void out of spite.

I built mine on the edge of the purple vents and the volcanic biomes, near the delta station. There is a ton of resources of every type in close proximity and not very deep either. Plus you can track the Chelicerate with the scanner room. Also close proximity to everything else on the map since it's kind of a central location on the map.

I built a medium-sized base 300 ms south of Delta station dock above a drop into deeper Twisty Bridges, mostly because I take lots of round trips and it's decently close to a lot of resources. I have another similar-sized base at the starting area of Glacial Basin (the one near the Seatruck docks).

I also have a teeny tiny base (one X-connector + scanner room) above some bigger rocks in the Lilypads, because damn that biome is MASSIVE and it's a pain collecting the fragments. I used to go there for ruby but not since I built a fully-upgraded Prawn.

I think this is the correct flair? This is like my 5th ever run on subnautica, coming back every year or so and completely forgetting how to play it. I always try to build bases in new places so the game doesn't get boring (it rarely does anyways). Shame on me for using a map but I have a horrible memory. had these 3 spots in mind for a base. 1st is east of floating islands. I think it's quite a good location but the bonesharks are a nuisanceeeeee. 2th is a spot in the mushroom forest bordering with a few biomes on the north of the map (next to wreck 12). It's cool but a bit boring I guess? The third one is the cliff side of the blood kelp zone. Any tips or recommendations? Thank you, have a wonderful day! :3

I’ve built at spot 2! Near the blood Kelp and those two mountains near the floating islands is a good outpost imo, but I struggled with materials a small bit. My main base was elsewhere. The locals are nice, you’re not far from the shallows, not far from the deep end.

It’s a good spot for later game play with quick access to relevant areas. >!The cyclops has a path into the LR!< near that area, but I’ve never personally >!driven my cyclops into the lost river through that tunnel thanks to the Friend outside it!<

Grassy Plateaus, although basic is convienent. Go to the beacon for the 200m Degasi Base, and go a little south, near the border of (I think) the crag field. Theres an extremely pretty cave system there that can make for an excellent base. Theres also one near the blood kelp trench, which could prove useful later and is close to the sea readers path and other areas. (can send screenshots later if you need)

The Bulb Zone, although far from everything can be a good late game base due to it's relative safety (ampeels are chill if you give them their space, and bonesharks can be dealt with easily), titanium outcrops, thermal vents and lost river entrance. It's also pretty and has food sources nearby in the form of bulb bushes. If you have a cyclops (or when you get one) park it in shallower waters to prevent ampeels from attacking it.

Either of the mushroom forests (I prefer the NW mushroom forest) are pretty good. Easy access to the center of the map and the later game areas, whilst being pretty to look at. It's proximity to the blood kelp, underwater islands, bulb zone, shallows and other areas makes it a good hub spot. It looks cool too, and can be placed near purple pinecones for a flex or smth.

The sparse reef, although not pretty is resource rich and slightly close to later game areas, although its not one i'd recommend for a main base, and is pretty ugly tbh. Not a good place for a main base, but if you need resources build a scanner room and a small I beam or smth.

Jellyshroom caves are honestly really good. Get rid of crabsnakes if they annoy you, build a base and you're good. Shale outcrops, magnetite and lithium are all nearby, along with a good view and proximity to several other biomes.

Hey you're amazing! Thanks a lot, I'll check all of this places out and decide. Btw- How does one deal with bonesharks? You just kill em all?

1 upvotes on reddit
The_Pancakehead_21 · 2 months ago

usually, if they're bothering me intensly i'll knife them twice with thermoblade and they're gone. if you're just exploring they wont usually attack, but hitting them with a full health seamoth or going to shallower places can help you avoid them.

Where is your favorite location to build a base?

Posted by Purple_Factor8577 · in r/subnautica · 2 years ago

this is like my 5th replay and I always stick to two locations - one base, closer to my Lifepod at the drop off of the kelp Forest (for basics, water, i keep my most important items here and "back stock" (one full locker per material - up to Shale)
and another base, in the Grassy P by the wreckage ( I like to watch/hear the Reef Backs and its a good mid-point to the Island for me )

I want to build a base somewhere be a u t i f u l - the entire Map is stunning, but my purpose is because I want a nice view for my morning bowl and coffee lol

I plan on making a couple tiny bases (Sea Treader area/ Bulbs/ Behind the Aurora/ etc)

but I want a nice one purely to feel like my main home (if anyone has any base designs/organize ideas PLEASE lmk because my set ups always look the same lol)

On the ledge right before the Tree in the lost river. It gives easy access to thermal vents and an area in the lost river that has pretty much all of the materials you'll need (aside from creepvine, so plant some). Additionally it is extremely close to an end game teleporter.

My first base was right next to gasopods at the very edge of Safe Shallows. I liked the spot a lot. Close to the center of the map, lots of sunlight, lots of resources, chill, and shallow enough to have solar panels above the surface.

My other base was by the Great Cove Tree at around 900m and it was priceless for the endgame.

There is a thermal vent off to the right of the aurora. It’s close to the escape pod at the beginning of the game. I built a grain silo type base right in the middle of the vent, and a moon pool off to the side. It’s probably like 200m away max from the escape pod. Great early base, and it’s near a lot of late game stuff if you know where the deep entrances are.

But also, multiple bases works. And the big submarine is excellent.

I put mine in the red grassy area next to the Jellyshroom caves. It's a reasonable distance from the starter area, kelp forest, and blood kelp forest. The Jellyshroom caves are loaded with magnetite, too. And they're pretty :)

This is the answer. It is always best to build on the border of as many biomes as possible to have all kinds resources very close.

I usually swim around the safe shallows until I get to a place where all three: shallows, grassy plateau and kelp forest. Coincidentally, one of them is super close to jelly shroom caves, so it is close to four biomes.

I only ever did one pmaythrough of BZ. And I chose to do it ontop of a few of the floating islands near outpost zero. Huge mistake, because it was far from basically everything besides late-late game story elements. My advice would be to build somewhere around delta island, as its close to everything early to mid-game, and a bit far from only the very last parts of the game.

9 upvotes on reddit
PretentiousToolFan · 11 days ago

Yep. There are multiple places around Delta that are useful and central. You can get the drill arm a lot earlier, and the mining site is right there, allowing for a pretty fast base build early. I feel like early magnetite is also easier, so thermal power is a lot more useful. Also, titanium ingots only costing 5 instead of 10 makes base building that much faster.

The map is small enough you could build in any place and be fine for the most part, I built by the lifepod and had no trouble prawn suit walking to anywhere.

If you wanna minmax, delta island is probably the best most central spot that has plenty of nearby resources and is relatively safe once you get any vehicle (especially prawn suit) and you’d only really need to go to the northwest once or twice so it’s not essential to be near there

For BZ, I built above the lily pad crevice. Basically above the big floating rock where the pilots last known location is. It was only the second base I built. The first was in the shallows. It was the perfect forward outpost for mid to late game stuff, a great location to push the plot forward.

The upper area near the lily pads themselves are pretty safe, you gotta deal with some glo whales, and the occasional lillypadder I usually hit with my truck.

But a great location for resources, and you’re really not that far from delta island which I use as my main landmark (free beacon may as well use it). It’s also pretty close to some of the deeper biomes you’ll have to visit.

Best base locations?

This is mt third time playing this game and I want to build my base away from the starting location. Currently, my pre base is set up at a crossroads with the twisty bridges, the shallows, and the thermal vents.

My next base is gonna be somewhat big, it's gonna have two large rooms, maybe some multipurpose rooms, a scanner room, a moonpool, the sea truck dock, an observatory, and the control room once i find it, but all that will not fit where i currently an.

I don't want to swim too far to get things like creepvines, but i also want to be deep underwater, like 100-200m. Is there any place where this can be good?

You can cultivate creepvine outside of your base so no need to stick around the starting zone just to get close to the creepvines.

Twisty bridges - shallowsxs- thermal vent is the optimal crossroad for a base. as yo figured it out already.

Another nice, but not so optimal location is imho is the lilypad - purple vent border between the two mercury segment: huge open space to expand, nice view for the glowwhales and the floating lilypad rocks, around 100m depth but the solar panels still working, so no need to find, craft alternative powersource. con: most of th resourcer ar far away, like titanium and lead, but this isn't an optimal location, just nice.

I had a really nice base that I built down in the purple crystal caves. It was right over a crevasse. So I had rooms on either side of the crevasse and one large room suspended over it. I could drive my sea truck under my base. I used the control room to change the color so that it perfectly matched the crystals around it.

There's a ton of resources down there, and you can use external grow beds to culture most anything you might need. The only resource that's a pain is table coral. So stock up on those.

Once I had established the start of a base I needed indoor plants, but it was always so slow for me to get to that base from the surface. I was concerned about plants spoiling before I got them to my deep base. So I parked my sea truck with it's teleport module there. Then I swam to the surface with my sea glide. Once I stocked up, I teleported home instantly. It's the longest jump I've ever done.

The Leviathan down there makes for creepy background noise. He's mostly harmless so long as you're careful.

Best base locations in subnautica

Key Considerations for Base Locations in Subnautica:

  1. Resource Availability: Choose locations near essential resources like Titanium, Quartz, and Copper. Proximity to kelp forests or wrecks can provide easy access to materials.

  2. Safety: Avoid areas with aggressive creatures (like Reapers or Stalkers). Look for locations that are relatively safe, such as the Safe Shallows or the Mushroom Forest.

  3. Depth: Consider the depth of your base. Shallower areas are easier to manage, but deeper locations can provide access to unique resources and biomes.

  4. Accessibility: Ensure your base is near important landmarks, such as the Lifepod, the Aurora, or entrances to caves and wrecks for easy exploration.

  5. Expansion Potential: Look for flat terrain that allows for easy expansion of your base with additional modules and facilities.

Recommended Locations:

  • Safe Shallows: Great for beginners, this area has abundant resources, is relatively safe, and is close to your Lifepod.

  • Mushroom Forest: Offers a unique aesthetic, plenty of resources, and is generally safe from aggressive creatures.

  • Grassy Plateaus: Provides a good mix of resources and is relatively safe, with easy access to deeper biomes.

  • Deep Grand Reef: For advanced players, this area has rich resources and unique biomes, but be cautious of aggressive fauna.

  • Floating Island: A unique location with abundant resources, including a natural shelter and easy access to the surface.

Takeaway: Choose a base location that balances safety, resource availability, and accessibility to ensure a successful survival experience in Subnautica.
