TL;DR
Durability and Functionality
For those seeking a beach bag that can withstand daily use and harsh conditions, the Yeti Camino 35 is highly recommended. It is praised for its durability and ability to stand upright in the sand, making it versatile for various uses beyond just the beach [1:1]. Similarly, the Tom Bihn Monster Truck offers multiple compartments for organization and is noted for its sturdy construction, making it suitable for both beach outings and grocery shopping
[1:3].
Packability and Travel-Friendly Options
Travelers looking for a packable option might consider the Dejaroo Mesh Beach Bag, which features eight pockets and is made from a mesh material that allows sand to be easily shaken out [2:1]. The LL Bean Everyday Lightweight Tote is another excellent choice for travelers, offering ample space and internal pockets for organizing essentials like keys and cell phones
[2:2].
Stylish Alternatives
For those interested in stylish alternatives, the Longchamp Le Pliage is a popular choice due to its durability and ease of cleaning sand out [4:4]. If you're looking for something with a rattan look but more affordable than high-end designer bags, the Bellwood Silicone Beach Tote Bag offers a fashionable yet practical option
[5:2].
Classic and Timeless Choices
The LL Bean Boat and Tote is a classic option known for its long-lasting quality. Some users have reported using these totes for over 30 years, attesting to their durability [3:1]. This makes them an excellent investment for those who frequent the beach regularly.
When selecting a beach bag, consider factors such as durability, functionality, style, and how well it keeps sand out. Whether you prioritize organizational features, packability, or aesthetics, there are several options available to suit different needs and preferences.
I’m searching for a beach bag, and the description here is spot on for the most part:
https://www.reddit.com/r/backpacks/comments/gdt11f/best_beach_pack/
However, the suggestions on that thread and others don’t account for a bag that can properly stand up in the sand (like a tote) while having compartments and closures so that if sand gets in, it doesn’t get in to EVERYTHING like it would in a beach cooler or tote.
I’m thinking I may have to design and prototype something like this myself unless someone can point me to a bag that ideall has the above attributes, while also:
Any other recommendations?
EDIT: There are a number of suggestions for tote bags in the replies (which I appreciate greatly) however totes typically do not have any compartments to keep things separate. For example, I’d love to be able to open up one half of the bag, and then if sand gets in, there’s no sand in the other compartment where my personal items could be.
EDIT 2: I’m thinking that I’d like to design something like the topo designs River pack (great suggestion), BUT also add a compartment on the bottom that would act as a cooler, which would also act as a weight (lowering the center of gravity) so that it stood up very solidly on the sand.
Take some advice from a Sand War veteran: It is an uphill battle of sweat, blood and tears. You will always lose, its just how much effort you want to invest and what degree of losing you're happy with.
You can do your best to fight it with compartments, clean rooms, brushes, vacuums, nuke the beach first so all sand is converted to glass; nothing will work. You WILL get sand in every compartment, every zipper will be gummed up, every buckle will be scratched and wrecked. If you have ever visited a beach in your life, you will carry that sand with you, somewhere, until you die.
After decades of fighting this fight I basically created my own bag that was incredibly similar to the Tom Bihn Monster Truck. It's a big ass tote, wide open because I give up, but has compartments just for organization. Honestly I'd just buy the Tom; mine cost me more in time/materials/learning.
Sand gets in. I just tip it upside down and shake it with the anger of thousands of days wasted in this war on sand. Or Vacuum. Or throw it right into the water in a fit of rage and rinse the sand out.
I found sand in my phone case the other day. I haven't been to the beach with this phone. I live hundreds of miles from any beach. How did it get in there you ask? Because sand quantum tunnels through spacetime into every nook and cranny it can find.
If you want to continue this battle, I wish you godspeed and hope you find some sand-less life of perfection where you can get away with a day at the beach without bringing half of it home with you.
This is the best response. Ever. On Reddit. To any question.
Agreed!
In complete agreement.
This was definitely an entertaining, AND helpful. Quite a writer!
Tom Bihn Monster Truck. Three primary compartments and a few hidden ones. This is our beach bag and grocery bag.
I’m using Tom Bihn monster truck in orange
Same. But purple :)
I like this bag for beaches and for everything else Yeti Camino 35
Planning a trip to Santorini for next year, and realized today I don't have a beach bag that's easy to pack in my travel pack.
I've been looking at the Away Packable Carryall, the LL Bean Everyday Lightweight Tote, and the Samsonite Foldaway Tote.
Anyone have any experience with these, or have recs? Would like something super roomy.
I love my LL Bean lightweight tote for this! The large is the perfect beach bag size if you need space for towels and a change of clothing. It also has a zipper pocket inside for keys, cell phone, etc. and I usually pack an empty, clear zip pouch for storing toiletries and sunscreen in my beach beach in case anything leaks. Also a great backup bag for transporting souvenirs home, if needed!
I just use a packable shopping bag for the beach, with a small pouch for valuables and small items.
It’s not the prettiest but I got a packable 25L tote from Eddie Bauer for $15 for a Hawaii trip and we still use it all the time for pool days.
I have this too and I love that you can cinch it closed without losing any space. In fact, you gain space because items can poke out above the top of the tote but still be securely enclosed by the cinch top.
Yes! Also the internal pocket is great and the external one is big enough for a water bottle or keeping sunscreen in so you don’t have to dig around under towels. I’ll totally buy another one if this one ever craps out.
The ones you’ve named are quite structured, how about something like the standard baggu? I like how the handles are long enough and flexible enough that if I have something wet/dirty I can tie it to the outside of my backpack and keep it separate or I can tie the bag up and the dirt is enclosed inside
The best packable beach bag is Dejaroo Mesh Beach Bag because it has a whopping eight pockets: seven external pockets for smaller belongings like electronics, sunblock, and flip-flops, and one interior pocket. There’s also a zippered section inside for keys, so they don’t get buried. There’s nothing exceptionally creative about the design but the bag is more convenient for travel than a bulky canvas beach bag. The woven mesh material is ideal for shaking sand out however, this also means the bag isn’t waterproof.
After 7 years of use, my Jack Spade beach tote bag is ready for retirement. I'm looking for a good-quality bag of similar design and material (heavyweight canvas). Doesn't matter if male or female, I just want something of quality that will last me just as long. Living at the beach, this is something that will see nearly daily usage. The Jack Spade bag has since been discontinued.
I'm considering getting something for similar usage from Sea Bags. They're based in Maine (I think) and are made from used sails.
I can’t vouch for current LL bean totes lmao but my grandmother has been using the same tote bag since before my brother was born… so like 30+ years. That is HER bag for anything that doesn’t fit in her pocketbook lol
I have this tote from 10 years ago and I have yet to find a punishment that will make it look anything less than new. These totes will take a beating. It's not a sexy option for sure, but it will last.
Highly rate Longchamp- durable, hard wearing, lots of colours, zipper closure. They’re a classic for a reason.
If you could share the brand and a pic it would really help my search of a new vacation-running errands around small town-holiday trip-spring-summer bag
Love my aloha tote as a beach/pool bag. The pockets are so useful and it’s waterproof!
Love all the colours!
For the beaches/beach towns I'm used to visiting (outer Cape, Lake Superior, Sanibel/Captiva), a canvas LL Bean tote bag would be spot-on. I've found most beach communities to be pretty casual, and you don't want to bring a nice bag to the beach. Bring a favorite summer bag for shopping and going out in the evening.
I have a large longchamp le pliage for the beach! We love it, hold towels, water bottles, sunscreen and so easy to get the sand out of
Not gonna lie, I love a fat Vera Bradley tote for the beach and lake
I personally dont have one because I am not located close to a beach and therefore dont get much wear out of a luxury beach bag. Google straw bags and you will get a range based on your budget.
I WOULD carry this amazing Celine Straw Bag
Hey everyone!! I’m in love with Chloe beach tote, but cannot justify spending that much on a bag I’d be dragging on a plane for beach vacation. Any suggestions on cheaper alternatives with the same rattan look??
Recommend “bellwood bag”, reasonably priced, fashionable and practical.
Idk how much cheaper you’re thinking, but I’ve been eyeing this Altuzarra Watermill bag:
Drooollll
Isn’t she cute?? The leather details make it a tiny bit different from the standard raffia bag.

I love that Chloe bag! I think this is a cute beach bag and it has the same stylish vibe as Chloe for half the price.
This is so stylish 👀👀
Right? I'm thinking of buying it. It's also lined which I like.
Hello. I'm looking for the best possible backpack/sling for this summer: I live near the beach and I go there almost everyday. The requirements would be:
That's pretty much all. So far, I've been considering the Gossamer Gear Minimalist24 (which probably checks all the boxes but I'm not sure about the quality of the materials and it's black only) and the Patagonia Planning Divider Pack (which I really like but it's probably a little too big and has a lot of zippers that could potentially fail in the long run). I can't wait to hear your suggestions and your experiences with summer packs.
Thank you!
What about this one, https://www.gossamergear.com/products/vagabond-packable
I bought it exactly for this purpose. have used it a few times for shopping and strolling in the city and it's really good and comfy. I love the pockets on the strap. Fitts my iPhone 11 pro perfectly.
I had the same requirements as you and looking forward to using it on my next holiday.
Thank you! That looks almost perfect and you're not the first one that points me towards it. The only thing that maybe bothers me is the tote design: I always hated the two-piece handles and I don't like too much how the top opening has a little bit of a "container" shape. It also looks a little narrow of an opening. Have these things been an issue in your experience?
I've only worn it a few times but I also have the vagabond Jet that I used every day as EDC pack for a few months. Tbh I was a bit skeptical my self, but I got used to it pretty quickly, Actually, I appreciate the fact that you can grab it and carry it like a tote. This I think can be useful when carrying the bag to and from the beach if it's hot and you don't want it on your back :).
In terms of narrowness, it's not really a problem unless you want to stuff big square packages in it. 2 liters water bottle slide in super easy for example. Since the packable version has no frame it's more flexible when opening and stuffing stuff. The jet version is a bit narrower.
But look at the pros.
1, lightweight and packable
2 side pockets are easy to access when backpack is on
pockets on the straps are great for holding your phone while walking, especially in summer if you are wearing lightweight shorts and don't want a phone in your pocket pulling them down.
outside mesh pocket for towel
very comfy straps for a packable backpack, with sternum strap as well
light color so it doesn't attract the sun
you can add a gossamer fast belt with pockets if you want.
has some water resistance I think (Jet version has a lot)
9 lot of functionality for the price.
so like me, you will forget about the handles and the non-traditional look of the backpack :).

You can also have a look at this one https://www.thenorthface.eu/shop/en-gb/tnf-fi/chimera-backpack-3s89

I have the 18L in black but there is no light color option. the 24 has. It's lightweight comfy and ticks the boxes you want. I bought it for day hikes, but I can see it working very well for the beach. It also has pockets on the straps and a good breathable back panel.

This one could be something to consider as well. Don't have it my self, just the Urban assault 24. But its a very good brand.

Tom bihn monster truck... I would totally tote
I don’t love branded bags and don’t like the regular version of this, but I LOVE this version. You’re making me want it, lol
Same. Beach totes can get away with being cheesy
Right?! And I figured I can easily spot it
Wait - ok, I absolutely hate every other version of this bag, but this one is very cool!
Oh I love that. My beach bag is a reusable grocery store tote in bright colors lol
Mine is a washable fabric shopping bag 😂 But I love this bag!
I saw one of these mesh bags in person and wow, they’re beautiful!
Omg, that is so much fun! Absolutely love the vibrant colors.
I've never cared for straw bags because I don't see the value in them, yet the Strathberry straw bag is the only one to ever catch my eye.
Depends on what you actually need it for.
I live beside the beach, if I’m walking from the house to the beachfront I’d want the Strathberry. But if it’s just for lunches, grabbing coffee etc. I like the Loewe best.
It’s for beach vacations I feel like the strathberry is more unique and an eyecatcher
Celine
I love me some celine
I like the Strathberry, but I’m a bit jaded because I think the other two just look like $20 straw totes you can pick up in any resort town or AliExpress but with GREAT BIG LOGOS on them (I know they are made much better and with more pricey materials … but still $20 vs $$$$ for something to drag around salt, sand and water). Strathberry looks like a real bag.
We’re planning on going to Hawaii, hopefully in March. We’re planning on doing a bunch of beach time and hiking. The problem is, I haven’t had a beach day since I was a child and never at the ocean. My family was very maximalist for the beach trips too….
Ideally for a full day at the beach I’d like to pack one bag and one cooler. Besides towels, swimsuits, sunscreen, beer and snacks I have no idea what one brings to the beach. Oh and the ungodly amount of water I will be carting around everywhere.
One bagging at the beach, what do you bring?
Reef safe sunblock, lip balm with spf, polarized sunglasses, a hat, a book/Kindle, towel (I like Turkish towels cuz sand falls right off, and they're light), and water bottle.
Definitely water shoes. Depending where you are in Hawaii, a lot of stuff is lava rock and you will want something to either wear under your fins (if you're snorkeling), or on your feet for general use. Some of us love water shoes we can hike in, but then that's a different animal than what you'd wear inside fins. I have worn my ancient shoe/sock Vibrams with a tough sole -- those turned out to be great for the beach.
When I go to Hawaii, on day 1 I bring it all, only to realize that 1-2 hours of sunbathing is enough to completely uv fry my Caucasian skin and or get blown out by the trade winds. Enjoy your beach time in short spurts, just bring a small bag w towel, water, a snack and extra sunscreen.
I’ve learned and relearned that a day at the beach in HI is nothing like a day at the beach in CONUS.
When I go to Hawaii, I typically pack everything into a single carry-on and then use a Crapchute packable shoulder bag (2.5oz) for the beach. I backed the original Kickstarter and have bought extras from the website as gifts because I like the bag design so much- it fits my linen towel, prescription goggles, insulated water bottle, sunscreen, wallet, and everything else I need. However, I don't stay the whole day at the beach- I usually spend the morning there and then head out for lunch when it starts to get really hot.
You might want to bring something to sit on and something to shade your head (hat or sun umbrella). Instead of bringing a cooler from home, I'd buy a cooler bag in Hawaii to use. They're sold at a lot of supermarkets (I'd recommend Don Quijote) and would make a nice souvenir.
Prescription...goggles...why did I never think of this!?
That's my goal to get done this year for my Caribbean cruise later this year. My vision is like -10, -11 so snorkeling with generic goggles with be pointless.
Prescription goggles are the best!
Mine are more like reading glasses than an exact prescription since I don't swim that often, but I have friends who splurged on their specific prescriptions for snorkeling masks and love them! Either way it's amazing to not have everything be as blurry.
I got mine from Decathlon and they was stupidly cheap - you buy the goggle casing and then you work out your blindness range in each lens and buy each "eye" individually and snap them in. I think it worked out to be around 30-35AU - highly recommended! :)
as someone from hawaii, the fashion here is really chill. you probably would want to dress up for dinners.
wear what youre comfortable with. i suggest jean shorts, linen dresses, etc. almost anything else is available at long's (cvs) and asian skincare is also more available here than most other states.
have fun, please shop local and respect the locals and the island. we have a low tolerance for rude tourists. 😊
You never wish your beach bag was smaller, only bigger! 😅
Haha true 😅
Update It’s complete!! Thanks for all the suggestions! I decreased every stitch at the top. Did Tunisian crochet for the handles, lined the bag and added a plastic bottom! Turned out really nice!
You said you want the top in. Maybe replace these with a triangle. As others have said, line it with fabric and give it a sturdy base
Put in a sturdy bottom and heavy straps.
I'm sorry... I wrote this almost 24 hours ago and forgot to click "Comment"
From Florida... beach bags can never be too big or boxy. However, I see what your talking about as with an already wide opening, plus the stretch you will encounter (hope you plan to line it with less stretchy material.. quilting cotton would be perfect)... well everything will want to fall out if you don't decrease the size of the opening.
So, why not just start working on a top border? You could do a 2 - 3rows to straighten up the top edge and then begin decreasing in following rows. I am not terribly experienced but I think I'd do 'aggressive' decreasing on the narrow sides and less or no decreasing at the front and back. I think this might give you a satchel purse type shape... those ones that are slightly narrower at the top than the bottom. Like this (a free crochet pattern that might help you with shaping your bag) or this .

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Beach Bag:
Size and Capacity: Look for a bag that is large enough to hold all your beach essentials, such as towels, sunscreen, snacks, and water bottles. A capacity of 20-30 liters is typically ideal.

Pockets and Organization: Opt for a bag with multiple pockets to keep items organized. Look for insulated pockets for drinks and smaller compartments for valuables like keys and phones.
