Best Beginner Characters in Tekken 7

TL;DR

  • Shaheen, Claudio, Katarina, and Josie are recommended for beginners due to their straightforward movesets and ease of learning fundamentals [2:2][4:1][5:2].

Beginner-Friendly Characters

Several characters are consistently recommended across discussions for their beginner-friendly nature. Shaheen is often mentioned due to his balanced toolkit and ability to teach basic fundamentals [3:2][4:1][5:2]. Claudio is noted for having a smaller moveset, which reduces the amount of memorization required [2:2]. Katarina is also suggested as an easy character to start with due to her straightforward playstyle [4:1][5:7].

Character Enjoyment and Personal Preference

Many commenters emphasize the importance of choosing a character that you find visually appealing or interesting, as this will help maintain your interest in the game [2:4][3:3][5:3]. Playing a character you enjoy can make the learning process more engaging and encourage you to improve.

Learning Fundamentals

Characters like Kazumi and Paul are recommended for learning basic fundamentals due to their solid toolsets [4:1][5:5]. These characters offer straightforward gameplay that helps new players understand core mechanics such as movement, punishment, and poking.

Advanced Characters

While some advanced characters like Mishimas (Kazuya, Heihachi, Jin) are mentioned, they come with complex techniques that may not be ideal for absolute beginners [5:1][5:4]. However, Jin is noted to have a unique style that might be easier for newcomers compared to other Mishimas [5:1].

In conclusion, while certain characters are generally easier for beginners, it's crucial to choose one that resonates with you personally. This approach ensures a more enjoyable experience and sustained interest in mastering Tekken 7.

ORIGINAL POST

Greetings, I just bought tekken 7 and I am having a blast but was wondering what characters are more beginner friendly. So far the characters I've enjoyed most are King and Kunimitsu but I am curious to see which ones do you recommend for beginners

Play whoever you want to play, give every character a try and see if they click with you, and soon you'll realize that you were meant to be a Panda player all along.

Not very beginner friendly when it comes to the movement option and her very tricky nature, but I’d suggest Master Raven. the bare minimum in beginner and intermediate know the matchup so you’ll be good lol. Raven is who I started with and it’s been a long journey. If you wanna use a ninja, I’d find the nearest dump for Kuni and pick up raven

I personally found Miguel the most fun to start with.

He has a lot of straightforward stuff meaning you can play the spacing and basic pressure game. He has a stance to play around with. His combos aren't too tricky and have a nice rhythm to them. On top of all that he just has a nice swagger to him and once he gets going he is a real pain train while also not being too cheap or relying on too many gimmicks.

To me he represents a nice balance of simple to pick up and difficult to master and from there you can go to other characters once you get a better sense of what you want to focus on.

I bought julia, and zafina and they look pretty cool, but they seem kind of hard, and with a game this complex, i feel like easier characters are the ones to go with at the start. What are 5-10 characters that are begginner friendly?

Late to the party, but I reccomend Claudio. He has the smallest moveset, so theres not too much memorization involved

How is Julia or Zafina? Or negan? Are they easy?

Claudio seems a bit too anime for me

Negan is intermediate imo. He relies more on punishing the opponents mistakes and pressure. Julia relies on slightly above average execution, and fast ff1s. Zafina is a master of mobility with good range, but higher execution and multiple stances.

He is easy to play, his inputs and moves are easy to do, but amounting to execution is the hard part.

What you need to practice primarily with heihachi is the ability to whiff punish with launchers (primarily electrics) and counter hits, while pressuring the opponent, thats where the difficult part is.

For a rushdown stance character, try Miguel.

For a balanced all round option with good generic tools, try Shaheen.

For a poke heavy fundamentals based character, try Kazumi

Just find a character you like and start from there. You’ll improve on your own instead of playing someone you don’t enjoy just because he or she is easy.

When you start playing Tekken and instead of picking your favourite, you go with something easy you are about to make mistake.

You can learn an easy character in like 1-2s weaks. The generic movelist, basic combos and how to get a combo at all, some good moves and how to use these. Fine.

But it will take at least a year to get used to all the stuff which is going on. Movement, punishment, poking, specific MU details. YOu might get stuck with a character you dont like but considered rather good, instead of playing the one you liked and considered bad just to save a few weaks of learning basic stuff.

Go with the one you like the most, no matter what. Play a bear if you like these, go with a Mishima when this what you enjoy, pick a tricky poking character or even a waifu.

Dont go the easy way in this one, pick the one you like.

Pick who you find cool, an easy character isn't going to do you a lot of good if you get bored of them after a week and then stop playing entirely.

Take your time to find your main, I sure did.

The easiest characters in the game are probably claudio, katarina and josie. Negan too if getting dlc isnt an issue

Best for learning basic fundamentals would be shaheen, law, kazumi, paul.

Though tbh, the best way to go is pick a character who you like the look of, play with them a bit to see if you like them, then go to another one you like if not.

Sure if you want to, but some of their techniques that are important to win are a bit difficult to use consistently, like EWGF and wavedash mixups. Won’t matter at low ranks tho, but still worth considering.

Also Jin doesn’t really fight like a Mishima, he has his own style with a few Mishima-esque moves but with his own spin on them. So he’s easier. Devil Jin is a true Mishima tho.

So if you wanna play one of those guys, I would recommend base Jin, but any of them are fine so long as you know what you’re getting into.

You’re so new I wouldn’t even worry about that kind of stuff. Pick a character that aesthetically pleases you or a character you’ve seen that looks fun. No character is impossible to learn by a beginner and you wouldn’t need to learn the difficult stuff until you get past the first couple hurdles of learning anyway so you might as well play with a character that interests you.

Katarina, Josie, Asuka, Claudio, shaheen

6 upvotes on reddit
mere_indulgence · 3 years ago

I personally think Asuka isn't that great of a character to start out with. Her playstyle is surprisingly unorthodox, and most beginners tend to form really bad habits spamming her punishable strings, lows, her parry and overly rely on her evasiveness. It's rare to see a low rank Asuka that doesn't go full unga bunga, which isn't the way you're supposed to play her at higher ranks and is gonna make them plateau.

1 upvotes on reddit
H
HumanAntagonist · 3 years ago

Beginners form bad habits with any character. There are tons of string, power crush spamming, hard red rank stuck kazumis.

If someone wants to learn fundamentals, they will, with any character. And if they don't then they won't. The character doesn't decide that.

I’d say Johnathan is your best bet for getting started. Pretty much the Ryu of this game, he has a fireball, DP, and a pretty basic gimmick which is just charging his meter/using EX moves.

Pt. 3 DIO might be good if you want to learn a stand user first, he has a lot of good moves that are easy to perform, but he does have a lot of moves in general.

That’s just my opinion though, I’m sure somebody else has a better reason for it being somebody else.

Jonathan, Josuke 8, Okuyasu, and jotaro 3. Jotaro 4 and Josuke 4 are intermediate in my eye and girono’s combos are pretty straightforward. Not all of the jojos are automatically beginner friendly or good at all. In fact, Johnny is one one the worst characters in the game, but don’t let that stop you from playing who you wanna play

2 upvotes on reddit

The Jojos are the most straightforward characters, and they have staple moves like hazards (Jolyne), projectiles (part 4 Jotaro, Gappy), and barrage attacks (all of them)

Haha he sure is! Also to add on to that, try other characters out that aren't categorised as 'beginner friendly'. You may end up liking them to the point that their difficulty to master won't matter.

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 5 years ago

The answer you're looking for is Shaheen, Kazumi, and maybe Leo, Feng, Jin or Claudio. Asuka is pretty beginner friendly too but is nonstandard in a lot of ways, such as lacking a good i10 punish.

The real answer is pick who you like or who appeals to you. In Tekken it's really the game that's hard, regardless of character choice. If you're in love with Yoshimitsu, go ahead and play him, even if people tell you he's too complex for beginners. You'll quickly find that every character has a simple, effective gameplan you can use while learning.

The real important thing at the beginning is to find a character that's fun to play and just play a lot for fun. It will take months to feel comfortable in this game and that's fine, it's a 25 year old game basically.

I highly highly recommend this playlist to learn the game. The first video answers your exact question!

I’ll have a look at the playlist you posted also thank you so much again for reply!

3 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 5 years ago

Sure!

Xiaoyu is dope. Definitely one of those complicated characters but super deep and rewarding, lots of xiaoyu players are character loyalists that know her inside and out.

Btw one thing about her that the movelist doesn't tell you is how her optional backturn transitions work. A lot of Xiaoyu's moves will make her back face the opponent, such as df1, 1,d2, or 2,1. This can be very useful as a lot of Xiaoyu's best moves are only available with her back to the opponent.

What you can actually do is hold any direction (usually back, so you can block too) after using the move and she will instead end the move facing forward, often with a little extra distance from the opponent. To start try doing 1,d2 while just tapping down to face backwards, then try holding it to face forwards to get a feel for it.

This doesn't work with every backturn transition, some moves such as f,f3 force you to face backwards no matter what you do. The game doesn't tell you this anywhere which is kind of annoying Xd.

In general for Ling i would recommend using Art of Phoenix (d1+2 is the manual entry and dodges attacks, you can also use moves like d1~d to transition into it) a LOT. It evades most moves in the game and imo is the core of the character design. Try when in AoP to use a lot of df4 and some 2,1. The df4 will make them want to duck or low parry and the 2,1 will catch them if they do. The 2, 1 is also really fast and can interrupt a lot of attacks. Once they get scared and start standing there doing nothing while you're in AoP then you can start using more crazy moves like hopkicks, the landing pirouette, or d1+2 for a huge launch.

Have fun and spam aop for easy victory!

Pick whoever you like. Picking a beginner friendly character doesn't really matter. You're going to suck when you first start regardless. Might as well go through that with a character you like and not one you picked just bc they're easy.

2 upvotes on reddit
Rusty_Shackleford__ · 5 years ago

Just keep with it and as long as you're enjoying your character you'll start figuring stuff out. There is a TON of resources online to help you improve. If you're getting frustrated playing online, try to think objectively about what's beating you, and then head into practice mode and learn how to do with it. Most importantly, be patient with your self and know that it's okay to take breaks. This game is very hard and will take some time to get good at. If you stop having fun, just go do something else for a few hours or even days. The time away from the game can be very refreshing and let's you come back with some fresh takes on how to play and improve.

He is DLC, it was a bit of a joke post because he is currently top tier and very easy.

The real beginner friendly character is Kazumi but you should play whoever you like because learning a character you identify with and like it's a lot easier and more fun than learning the strongest or recommended one.

Good advice all around. Here's something else I'd like to add. Play Tekken without fear. By that I mean, don't fall into the trap of thinking defensively (not the same as playing defensively). Even if you play ranked matches online, don't worry about losing. Try out different stuff in actual matches, not just in practice mode. If you manage to pair up against a tough opponent who kicks your ass in every round, if you have the time, keep re-matching. And then adding them to your replays to watch and learn later.

I started out Tekken with Gigas and even though I have decent fundamentals now and am mid-ranked online, I actually enjoy matches where the other person also plays sorta high risk high reward like I do. I have about 1400 wins with Gigas, but I'm pretty sure I have double the losses. But that's absolutely fine. I don't judge myself too harshly (I mean I'm not a pro player so no pressure) and that's one of the reasons why I play it for an hour or so almost every day.

Oh, and I'd like to add since no one has mentioned this yet I think - Shaheen is a great character if you're a beginner. He has access to both an orbital and a hop kick (or is it flip kick in his case?), which lead to decent bread and butter combos. He also has a basic stance that you can use for screws and 50-50s, and multiple ways to set up that stance. Not great but decent throw game. Winning online with him requires you to learn a very basic but important while standing move. Like Kazuya, he too has a kick that hits grounded opponents for decent damage. And he has perhaps the simplest (along with maybe Feng and Bob) wall combo. Some say he's the most boring character on the roster, but I disagree.
