Repairing Scratched Surfaces
To fix cat scratches on surfaces like doors or furniture, sanding and painting are commonly recommended. For deeper gouges, using wood filler before repainting can help achieve a smooth finish [1:1]. It's also suggested to prevent future damage by ensuring that cats aren't left in situations where they might scratch out of frustration, such as being locked behind a closed door
[1:3].
Managing Cat Scratching Behavior
If your cat is scratching you during play, it's important to redirect their behavior. Wearing leather gloves can protect your hands from scratches [2:1]. Additionally, using resources like Jackson Galaxy's videos on stopping unwanted behaviors can be helpful
[2:2]. Some suggest saying "ow!" when scratched to deter the behavior, although this doesn't work for everyone
[2:3].
Understanding Cat Play and Aggression
Cats often exhibit playful aggression, which can include scratching and biting. This behavior mimics hunting instincts, where cats play with their "prey" before attacking [4:1]. Individual cats have different tolerances for petting and play, so understanding your cat's limits can help manage these interactions
[4:4].
Favorite Scratching Spots for Cats
Cats have preferred spots for being scratched, which can vary widely. Common favorite areas include under the chin, the belly, and where the back meets the tail [5:2]
[5:3]
[5:4]. Observing your cat's reactions can help identify their favorite spots and make bonding time more enjoyable.
Additional Considerations
For those dealing with stray or newly adopted cats, patience and gradual acclimatization to new environments are key. Providing plenty of toys and scratching posts can help redirect scratching behavior away from people and furniture.
Get rid of the door and get more cats
At least, that's what r/cats will tell you 😂
Voids are notorious for not liking closed doors, and it seems like yours is no exception. :D Just sand and repaint, as others have suggested ... and leave the door open in the future..
sure the door is bad, but what are you going to do about that cat-shaped hole in the floor??
Lol good question
Sand and paint. If there are bigger gouges, a little wood filler. Then make sure that door isn’t closed with the cat inside lol
How do I get my previously stay cat to quit scratching my hands? He doesn't do it viciously, it's clear he's playing but still it hurts 😩 I've tried redirecting him to a toy but he still does it. He's still pretty scared of things like the TV & other loud sounds & wants to hide a lot.
OP thank you for caring enough to ask here.

Some superheroes suggest saying "ow!" when the cutie does it to dissuade them from doing it <3
Saying "Ow!" doesn't do anything either lol
Thank you so much for the links, appreciate you!! ☺️
Just noticed the typo 🙃
"Stray" not "stay" 😂

Try wearing leather gloves specifically, they will catch his claws before they get to your skin.
I quite like the skellyton style.
Thank you! ❤️💀🌱
a message was set clearly that moment
For anyone concerned, the scratches don’t hurt too much and I always clean them after I’m done.
Individual cats have different “petting tolerances” it seems. They either get overstimulated, or they’re saying they’re the alpha and you no longer have the luxury of petting me. If you’ve ever seen a cat hunting, the behavior starts to make a bit of sense. The turds won’t just kill the dang thing, they have to play with it first.
I don't know that this is a tolerance deal every bit of this looks like play on the cat's end
My cat does this and at least for her it's starts out as grooming becomes play for about a second and then quickly a tolerance issue. It's usually when she is sitting in my lap She insists on pulling my arm to her anyway, even if I pull it away to leave her alone. She also yells at me but doesn't jump down. She's just weird like that.
They go hand in hand really. Op mentioned the cat starts by licking then it turns to nibbling and scratching. The whole point of playing with a cat is to essentially imitate hunting for the cat. At one point they’re playing with their prey, the next they’re attacking it.
My husband says they like to marinate it in suffering/fear first. Makes sense too, they won’t go after a dead or boring bug. It has to want to live.
Crack kitty sending the memo "It's PLAYTIME"!
The wind up before the bite lmao
What a sweet baby.. <3
"Suffer my love,mortal" vibes
"You're so cute I just wanna bite your head off" We have a filter, theirs bearly function off 1 brain cell.
Isn't that most cats, the spot under their chin.
Belly, she loves belly rubs almost more than anything
Dope name, and where the back and tail meet... butt scratchies
One inch directly adjacent to the spot I'm currently scratching.
She just moves around and won't let me scratch one place for more than a couple seconds.
SmartCat Pioneer Ultimate Scratching post. It’s tall and sturdy and has lasted three years already for my two cats. It’s $49.99 on Amazon. *edited to add price
Any of them?
The taller the better. There's a lot of super cheap ones that are like barely a foot tall. You want something that your cat can stretch to scratch the top of.
The cheaper it is, the quicker it will wear out. The more expensive ones tend to have thicker sisal rope on them and last longer.
If you get one with a wooden center you can re-sisal it when it wears out (or just make one from 4x4 wood with a plywood base if you have the tools). Just don't use nails or staples (hot glue works well).
Generally, I've found the corner of the sofa work well.
What a cutie ❤️
My cat loves scratching wood. It's her favorite thing to scratch. She also likes the rope that was on the cat tree house thing I got her. Though out of all those, probably her absolute favorite thing to scratch would be my favorite chair. The corner of it is destroyed because of her. 😭😭😭😱😱😱
My cat scratches everything...I just got a new computer chair and it hasn't been in my apartment for more than 12 hours and she has already scratched it. I bought a mouse pad (working from home due to covid19) and that's a scratching post too.
I cut her claws a few days ago so they aren't sharp.
She has three vertical scratching posts throughout my apartment. Most of them are against the sides of my couch though because that's her favorite thing to scratch. Some of them are taller than others, I got a variety.
I also have one vertical cardboard scratching post and three horizontal scratching posts that she can sit on and rip up.
Yes, my apartment is filled with them. She scratches EVERYTHING though and I do not get it. I'm not declawing her and those caps aren't a possibility since she's too squirmy and wouldn't let me out them on.
I'm all out of ideas and in sick of her destroying everything I own. I've tried getting up every time she scratches a post and petting her and giving her treats, but she doesn't care lol.
Getting rid of her is also not an option. She's too damn cute and I could never get rid of her .
TLDR: my cat scratches everything in my apartment except the seven scratching posts she has
Try taking her to a trainer. If you really don't wanna do that then the only option would be to declaw it but that's a very touchy subject on here. I would only declaw if you have tried every single resource and have no prevail.
Edit: I'm going to get a lot of hate for this one but oh well.
They have cat trainers?
I'd rather not declaw her since it causes them pain.
Thanks for the response!
I personally do not recommend declawing. They do have animal trainers. I hope you get your situation resolved I'm sure it is really frustrating. For now until you get it situated trying a spray bottle on the cat.
Adding a little bit of catnip to the regular scratch post or the carboard scratcher can keep the kitty off the furniture.
Another thing worth checking out is a carboard-type scratcher or sisal mat, instead of a scratching post. Some cats love scratching on such a surface. It may create some mess to clean, but it is often not a big hassle.
Finally, if nothing else works you can also look at a cat deterrent spray like Sentry Stop That! and Claw Withdraw to discourage the behavior. You can also look at Scram Mats and furniture protectors if you do not mind the decor changing a bit. There are some transparent ones that are virtually undetectable.
Good, but cross-eyed?
Didn't want it looking weird staring into my soul
Me and my pookies beat you by a year
It's kind of awesome considering. Drawing things looking straight is hard and I think you dod great here!
arms could be a bit longer, but that looks good!
Welp, I having nightmares tonight.
Bio oil!!! I find that if you apply bio oil to “car scratches” twice-four times a day before lotion it hella helps!! Do a layer of bio oil, let it sit for 5 minutes and then do Vaseline or anything with a high vitamin E concentration!
thank you!!
what makes the flakey scabs go away faster is definitely aquaphor. im sure any lotion would work just fine but aquaphor wont sting at all
😊 thank you
Hydrate the "cat scratches." Stuff like vaseline and lotion will help them heal faster.
thank you!!!
No problem, cute dog btw
My fiancé and I have two cats, one is a 8 month old kitten who love to scratch furniture like CRAZY. We are breaking his habits, have a lot of scratching posts but our couch is ripped to shreds and we will be investing in a nice, new couch when we move.
We will definitely be doing as much as we can to make sure he doesn’t scratch a new couch but we obviously can’t be home at all time to watch him. What material of a couch should we buy that is very durable and less noticeable for cat scratches? We will probably do the scratch-proof plastic guards but any tips? I want to make sure we are making a smart investment since nice couches are a few thousand dollars.
Definitely not a ‘burlapy’ style of couch. One they can really sink their claws in and hook on. I can’t think of what the material is called but our cats went ape over it when we first got them. Then we were given a leather-like couch and they actually seemed to do fine with it. We just had scratch posts at both front corners.
Another vote for leather. Added bonus, fur doesn't stick to it.
Provide many alternatives for them to scratch. I purr-sonally have a leather couch that is surrounded by cat towers and scratching posts. I rarely have problems with him scratching. When ever you give your cat a no (couch) make sure to give multiple yeses.

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Cat Scratching Posts:
Material: Look for durable materials like sisal, carpet, or wood. Sisal is particularly popular as it withstands scratching well and is safe for cats.
Stability: Ensure the scratching post is sturdy and won't tip over easily. A heavier base or wider footprint can help with stability.
Height and Size: Cats like to stretch while scratching, so choose a post that is tall enough (at least 30 inches) for your cat to fully extend. Consider the size of your cat as well.
Design: Some cats prefer vertical scratching posts, while others may like horizontal ones. Offering a variety can cater to different scratching preferences.
Additional Features: Some scratching posts come with added features like toys, platforms, or condos, which can enhance your cat's playtime and encourage them to use the post.
Recommendations:
SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Post: This is a highly-rated option made of durable sisal and stands 32 inches tall, allowing for full stretching. Its sturdy design makes it a favorite among cat owners.
