What Redditors are Saying

Best Automatic Dog Feeder

TL;DR Several automatic dog feeders are recommended for their reliability and features, including the PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed and WOPET Automatic Pet Feeder.

PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed

The PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed is frequently mentioned as a top choice for an automatic dog feeder. It offers programmable feeding times and portions, which allows you to customize your dog's feeding schedule according to their needs. The feeder can dispense up to 12 meals per day, making it suitable for dogs with specific dietary requirements or for households with multiple pets. Its design minimizes food jams, ensuring consistent feeding [1:1].

WOPET Automatic Pet Feeder

Another popular option is the WOPET Automatic Pet Feeder, which is praised for its user-friendly interface and large capacity. This feeder can store up to 20 cups of dry food and allows for flexible portion control. It also features a voice recorder, enabling you to record a message that plays during feeding times, which can be comforting for your pet when you're not home. This feature is particularly useful for pets that may experience separation anxiety [1:2].

Considerations for Choosing an Automatic Feeder

When selecting an automatic dog feeder, consider factors such as the size of your dog, the type of food they eat, and any specific dietary needs they may have. Some feeders are better suited for dry kibble, while others can accommodate wet food. Additionally, think about the feeder's capacity and how often you'll need to refill it based on your dog's eating habits. Another consideration is the ease of cleaning, as maintaining hygiene is crucial for your pet's health [1:3].

Additional Features

Some feeders come with additional features like Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to control the feeder remotely via a smartphone app. This can be convenient for adjusting feeding schedules or portions while you're away from home. Look for feeders with secure lids and mechanisms to prevent your pet from accessing the food outside of designated feeding times, especially if your dog is prone to overeating or has a tendency to tamper with objects [1:4].

ORIGINAL POST

Howdy! Someone we know is surrendering their large, energetic dog to a shelter, so we said we would take her instead. The dog is 10 months old and much larger than our small older dog who is 8 years old. Straight to the questions:

  1. Our old dog sleeps in our bed with us, and the new one sleeps in a crate (so we hear). Can one sleep in our bed and the other locked in their crate, or do their bedroom routines need to match?
  2. Our old dog roams the house freely while we are away, no issues. The new dog chews everything and is supposedly fine in a crate. Can we leave one dog free-roaming and the other in a crate when we leave the house?

Appreciate your insights! Cheers!

I've got a 9yo lab that is crate trained but no longer confined. I also have a 1.5 yo lab that I wouldn't trust for 30 minutes unobserved. Young dog is kenneled at night and when the people leave. Old doggo does whatever wherever and I don't have issues. Trust is earned here and that trust is given in doses starting at 2 yo.

I foster dogs but only take in one at a time. Then I have my own 7 year old German shepherd. My fosters tend to be young about a year give or take 6 months. They are still in the chewing phase. Not reliably house trained High energy etc. My dog continues free roam as he is reliable. The fosters are in their kennel when we are at work and at night period. Otherwise they are free roam. I love helping dogs but they aren’t going to destroy our house. Or take the chance there is an incident with our dog.

Yes, their routines don’t need to match exactly, especially at first while the new dog adjusts. One dog can sleep in the bed while the other stays in a crate, and one can roam while the other is crated during your absence, as long as both are safe and comfortable. Keep monitoring interactions and gradually introduce more freedom or shared spaces as the younger dog matures and learns house rules.

Each dogs needs will be different and it’s OK to treat them differently.

It will be detrimental to your current dog if you disrupted their routine. Let them still sleep with you and free roam! The new pup can earn those privileges later if you and your husband decide, but keep the new pup with its current routine, and your current pup with its current routine. It will help them both with the adjustment.

Dogs don’t have a sense of “fairness” like people do, so I don’t think the new dog will be like “hey that pup is out and about while I’m in a crate, what the fuck mom?!” New dog will probably be grateful for the routine and stability at first, and to have his “safe space.” If he’s trusting to free roam later, and would be fine outside, absolutely don’t need to keep the crating going long term. But even if you do keep it going for the life of the dog, he will just see it as routine and not humanize it the way we do

Best Neighborhood for dog owners and walking dog

Currently I live in Carver and it’s a great neighborhood that has changed a lot since I moved here in 2012. Currently I don’t think the neighborhood is very pedestrian friendly and some of the businesses aren’t people friendly or dog friendly. They are however alcohol friendly. As such I’m looking to buy a new to me home in a different area.

They look wonderful, and love them if you got them, but anyone thinking of getting a dog, don't encourage such abnormal "traits" that would be a birth defect in any other breed. it's an issue among many flat nosed breeds.

What's extreme about Frenchies is that they require IVF to get pregnant and C-section births. The weak trachea leads to a severely stinted lifespan without surgical intervention and the eye pressure of the malformed skull can lead to a loss of an eye or going blind.

Fortunately they're too dumb to read this and can live happy lives, I'm not offending them. I do not think I'll of the dogs, but for a wonderfully active spirit, I see them age quickly and become trapped in a body that can't breath or smell and running and smelling is everything to a dog.

:( I so empathise with that first line - it’s surprisingly so hard to talk about losing a dog (or any pet really). I lost my little man in Feb and still struggle to mention him even in passing most of the time because I get such a lump in my throat so quickly. I really feel for Jessica and I think this is such a lovely message to share. I’m sure her little guy is happy wherever he is ❤️

I'm so sorry 😞 It's a pain like no other. Please take care of yourself.

There's an amazing essay written by a doctor who lost his wife to cancer (The Day I Started Lying to Ruth by Peter Bach). I wouldn't recommend reading the whole thing while you're fresh on the heels of grief - it's beautifully written but a raw, tough read - but I'd like to share the final paragraph. I revisit it frequently in times of grief:

"It turns out that Hollywood has grief and loss all wrong. The waves and spikes don’t arrive predictably in time or severity. It’s not an anniversary that brings the loss to mind, or someone else’s reminiscences, nor being in a restaurant where you once were together. It’s in the grocery aisle passing the romaine lettuce and recalling how your spouse learned to make Caesar salad, with garlic-soaked croutons, because it was the only salad you’d agree to eat. Or when you glance at a rerun in an airport departure lounge and it’s one of the episodes that aired in the midst of a winter afternoon years earlier, an afternoon that you two had passed together. Or on the rise of a full moon, because your wife, from the day you met her, used to quote from The Sheltering Sky about how few you actually see in your entire life. It’s not sobbing, collapsing, moaning grief. It’s phantom-limb pain. It aches, it throbs, there’s nothing there, and yet you never want it to go away."

good automatic feeders?

Posted by Massive-Pin-3425 · in r/CatAdvice · 1 month ago

looking into getting automatic feeders for my 2 cats, and wanted to ask for recommendations. right now they eat 1/4 cup of their kibble 3x a day, and ideally would like a feeder that could do exactly that. some feeders ive looked into have reviews saying kibble will get stuck sometimes and not fully feed the cats, and thats something i can not deal with. i spend weekends at my partner's house, and although there are other people in the house and the cats arent alone, i dont want to rely on them needing to check the feeder throughout the day and dont want the cats to go without eating.

edit to add: also hoping to spend around $150. of course, less is always good. also bonus points for something i can find in stores and not online!

Auto feeder for dogs recommendation

Hi! Looking for tried and true and not too expensive auto feeder for my senior dog. He needs to eat every 6 hours or so so I need something to cover while I'm at work/school.

I don't need anything fancy. We've been liking the ones that have compartments that open at the same time everyday. I don't need to pay for an app or camera or anything like that.

Basic, affordable, good quality, and durable is what I'm looking for. Thanks!

Hi there! It’s great that you’re planning ahead for your senior pup’s regular meals, keeping a consistent schedule really does make a big difference for older dogs.

If you’re looking for something simple, affordable, and reliable, you might want to check out an easy, no-fuss feeder option like the Anti-Choking Slow Feeder Dog Bowl.

While it’s not an automatic feeder with a timer, it’s really helpful if you ever have someone pop in to feed him, because it slows down eating, so he won’t gobble too fast (which can be risky for seniors). The grooves naturally pace him, helping prevent choking or stomach upset if he’s enthusiastic at mealtime.

For an auto option, you can pair this bowl with a very basic mechanical timer feeder, the kind with compartments that open at set times, exactly like you mentioned. That way you get the benefit of portion control and slower, safer eating.

So in short:

  • Simple design: easy to clean
  • Works for dry or wet food
  • Pairs perfectly with a basic compartment auto-feeder

I bought this one for my cat's pills and a few treats every 12 hours. Nothing fancy, just a digital timer you set for the interval you want. I've had mine almost a year with the same batteries. No apps, no bluetooth, just buttons under a flap.

Makes a sweet chirping sound as it rotates for the next feeding.

I bought an inexpensive smart feeder almost two years ago for my senior dog. I would get unexpectedly stuck at work and needed to make sure he still got fed. There’s no subscription, you connect through the app and can set a schedule or feed immediately. Knock on wood, it hasn’t let me down yet and has even withstood some chewing and very aggressive boops! Says it’s for cats but as long as your food pieces are under a certain size it works just fine, I haven’t had any trouble with my big dog food.

Automatic Cat Feeder

This is more for those of us who are cats parents ourselves. I’ve wanted an automatic feeder so that when I do overnights my cats don’t have to go 12-14 hours between meals. I think it was stressing out one of my cats because he was peeing outside of the litter box around the days I was gone for several days at a time.

Anyway, I got this one on chewy and it was only $60. I was super surprised because they’re usually like $100 and that’s only for one cat. This has two dishes, it’s very easy to assemble and there aren’t a million buttons and options, but there are plenty of feeding options that you can customize. I think you can connect it to Bluetooth but I don’t care for that kind of technology. The fun part is you can record a message when it goes off. Mine says “crunchy munchies!”. Been using it for about two weeks and it’s been great.

Hey guys, great to see you're loving the product. I have also recently done some research and if anyone else is looking to buy an automatic feeder, I made a small post with five options for varying brands with differeing price points if you'd like to check it out. I personally tried each of them and have friends who have too. I would love to hear your thoughts if you have already, or are planning to try one of them out. Cheers.

best automatic dog feeder

Key Considerations for Choosing an Automatic Dog Feeder:

  1. Capacity: Look for a feeder with a suitable capacity for your dog's size and eating habits. Larger dogs may require feeders that hold more food (up to 25 cups), while smaller dogs may need less.

  2. Programmable Settings: Choose a feeder that allows you to set feeding schedules and portion sizes. Some models offer multiple meal settings per day.

  3. Power Source: Consider whether you want a battery-operated feeder or one that plugs into an outlet. Battery backups can be useful during power outages.

  4. Material and Design: Opt for durable materials that are easy to clean. Stainless steel or BPA-free plastic is often recommended. A design that prevents tipping and spills is also beneficial.

  5. Connectivity Features: Some advanced models offer smartphone connectivity, allowing you to monitor and control feeding remotely. This can be helpful for busy pet owners.

  6. Safety Features: Look for feeders with features like anti-jam technology to prevent food clogs and secure lids to keep pets from accessing the food outside of feeding times.

Recommendations:

  • PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed: This model is highly rated for its programmable settings, large capacity (up to 24 cups), and easy-to-clean design. It also has a slow feed option to prevent gulping.

  • WOPET Automatic Pet Feeder: A great budget-friendly option, it offers a good capacity, programmable feeding times, and a built-in voice recorder to call your dog at mealtime.

  • Chewy's Smart Feeder: If you're looking for connectivity, this feeder allows you to control feeding via a smartphone app, making it convenient for tech-savvy pet owners.

Choosing the right automatic dog feeder can help maintain your dog's feeding schedule and ensure they receive the right portions, promoting better health and well-being.
