TL;DR
Types of Nail Clippers
There are different types of nail clippers available, each with its own advantages. Guillotine nail trimmers are popular and can be found at most pet stores. They typically cost around $30 and come with extra blades, making them a good investment for regular use [4:1]. Another option is to use large nail clippers designed for giant breeds like Great Danes, which may need replacement every few months with weekly use
[4:2].
Durability and Precision
Millers Forge 743C is highly recommended for its sharpness and longevity. Despite seeming small, they allow for precise shaping of the nail and help avoid cutting into the quick [4:4]. Users have noted that even though these clippers might eventually wear out, they are reliable until then
[4:5].
Maintenance
If your current nail clippers are becoming dull, consider having them sharpened instead of replacing them immediately [4:3]. Regular maintenance can extend the life of your tools and ensure a smoother grooming experience for your dog.
Additional Considerations
When choosing a nail grinder or clipper, consider the size and temperament of your dog. Some dogs may be more comfortable with certain types of clippers, and larger dogs may require heavy-duty options. Always prioritize safety and comfort during grooming sessions to avoid causing stress or injury to your pet.
Howdy! Someone we know is surrendering their large, energetic dog to a shelter, so we said we would take her instead. The dog is 10 months old and much larger than our small older dog who is 8 years old. Straight to the questions:
Appreciate your insights! Cheers!
I foster dogs but only take in one at a time. Then I have my own 7 year old German shepherd. My fosters tend to be young about a year give or take 6 months. They are still in the chewing phase. Not reliably house trained High energy etc. My dog continues free roam as he is reliable. The fosters are in their kennel when we are at work and at night period. Otherwise they are free roam. I love helping dogs but they aren’t going to destroy our house. Or take the chance there is an incident with our dog.
Yes, their routines don’t need to match exactly, especially at first while the new dog adjusts. One dog can sleep in the bed while the other stays in a crate, and one can roam while the other is crated during your absence, as long as both are safe and comfortable. Keep monitoring interactions and gradually introduce more freedom or shared spaces as the younger dog matures and learns house rules.
Each dogs needs will be different and it’s OK to treat them differently.
It will be detrimental to your current dog if you disrupted their routine. Let them still sleep with you and free roam! The new pup can earn those privileges later if you and your husband decide, but keep the new pup with its current routine, and your current pup with its current routine. It will help them both with the adjustment.
Dogs don’t have a sense of “fairness” like people do, so I don’t think the new dog will be like “hey that pup is out and about while I’m in a crate, what the fuck mom?!” New dog will probably be grateful for the routine and stability at first, and to have his “safe space.” If he’s trusting to free roam later, and would be fine outside, absolutely don’t need to keep the crating going long term. But even if you do keep it going for the life of the dog, he will just see it as routine and not humanize it the way we do
The younger pup is a wild, wild teenager. It will pass.
I trust my 3 year old to be out of crate pretty much constantly now, but I do restrict her to a single room while gone. My 9 mo is not to be trusted alone ever, so crate or exercise pen for now.
Hazel was a dog loved by everyone who met her. Even people who didn’t like dogs would say Hazel was the exception. She was a car accident rescue at a young age who I am so happy my family was able to make a comfortable life for. She never bit or barked at anyone, would comfort those who needed it, and lived a life of total curiosity and excitement for being involved. Even in her last few months when she was old and struggling she sprung back into the her old athletic self for food, walks, and rides. I loved her as much as I could and I will always hold onto her memory.
Here are some of my favorite photos of her. Any words or illustrations would really warm my heart right now, and I could really use that.
Thank you :)
Also heed my warning, dont try to do this at new game plus, I committed to a 80 dex 80 fth build with kinda high strength for a great shield along with pretty high mind and endurance for specific weapons and oh my god the amount of albanorics I have killed to make this build work. 3000 albanorics have died and I STILL NEED 40 MORE LEVELS END MY SUFFERING
Why don't you just play the game instead of killing 3000 Albinaurics?
Int/faith fell off hard from Ds3 to Elden Ring so pure faith could get the glow up that it deserved.
I wish pyromancy came back as its own spell type again😔
On god i need my demon scar back bro, int/faith in elden ring is literally only sword of night and flame, everything else fucking sucks unless you're like level 250 on ng+😭
Yeah, pyromancy was THE int/fth build, a shame fromsoft decided to cut it.
Staff Of The Great Beyond and cast anything you want.
Only your spell slots can limit you.
Close enough, welcome back Black Witch's Staff from DS2.
Two mid spells, two mid catalysts and not a single proper weapon without infusions.
and those weapons SUCK FLACCID COCK when infused for int/arc scaling, legit just better sticking with int weapons OR arc weapons and youd do more damage
Yes, it's really best in long game, double scaling catalysts out scale everything even at 60/60(at least what I tried)
On one hand I wish int/fth was better in ER on the other hand the balance between hybrid int/fth scaling and everything else was so fucking shit in DS3 it feels like ER definitely has it better when everything except int/fth is good instead of the opposite
So my wife and I do fairly well with cutting our girls’ nails. We have a routine that we found works, and I can work through each foot within about 5 mins.
The issue we’ve found the past couple of times, is that we think our heavy duty clippers are no longer sharp. Her nails were always stubborn to cut, but this time they just straight wouldn’t. I was forcibly having to squeeze to try to get them to even cut through, which then caused the dog to start panicking and pulling her foot away, which just made it worse cause the nail was still within the vices.
We ended up just using the electric nail dremel instead, which we’ve gotten her to tolerate, but the damn thing takes forever…so, we think we need a new pair of clippers.
What are the best, sharpest, most pet groom shop pro, heavy duty clippers you all can recommend???
We would use whatever nail clippers were the biggest at the pet store. They're for giant breeds like great danes. Once we we're struggling to cut a nail, we would replace them. That would be every three months or so with regular, weekly, nail cutting.
You can have your current clippers sharpened.
Millers Forge 743C is what I've always used. Super sharp and last forever. Might seem a little small, but it allows you to shape the nail and creep up on the quick as opposed to just guillotine the nail and hoping for the best.
Huh..
I Googled them and that's exactly what we currently have. Big orange handles, yellow safety tab, "Millers Forge Italy" on the blade.
Guess our pair just met their end at some point.
Guillotine nail trimmers are what we have. A good pair will run you about $30, and should come with extra blades.

Is all of them an answer?
I usually have someone hold him as I clip them, but would like to hear alternatives. I tried the grinder but hasn't worked well as it takes a long time and his paws are so small hard to get a nail away from the rest.
It would be nice to do it on my own, but I have to pin him down in awkward positions and would like something more comfortable. I've seen some people use a harness to dangle their chi's so the feet are free and they can't move much.
Any advice is appreciated.
Does this work? Im considering the this option. Also using a nail grinder while suspended. At a loss
I have a grinder it is my preferred method. It goes on like a harness then I have it hung from a clothing rack. I used to groom here is the method.
Roll the foot under and work from the bottom.
When you grind the nails keep the grinder moving side to side. If you hold it still it will warm up and burn.
There will be a lot of dust further from the quick. The closer you get the less there will be. Round up at the end, the quick is usually longer at the bottom of the nail.
Take breaks and look at the nail, you will see a black dot like breaking open spaghetti to check for doneness.
If they pull back their feet have a helper wrap their hand behind the elbow. This will keep them from pulling the arm back.
Grind every week and the quicks will recede. If it isn’t too hot walk on asphalt. The texture grinds naturally, especially if you can get them to run on it.
My vet trims nails for free. Budgie screams like he’s being killed when he sees me with clippers in hand. But at the vet he doesn’t say a word. It’s almost embarrassing after I warned the vet about the little screaming Tasmania devil he turns into. 🙄
Mine run and “hide” in their crate when they see me get the clippers. I can’t even trim my own nails without them running away in terror 😂
😂😂😂. I had a Chi who did the same thing.
omg i wish. my vet charges $29 per chi
Best to get them done by vet because there are blood lines in nails and if you cut to close it’s bad. Dont risk it.
I personally think these things are a bit cruel
I was worried aboit the same thing and talked to my dog trainer about it, she highly encouraged to use a sling bc it is more like being held and they go a bit docile. Made me feel better about it and honestly, it was a game changer for trimming our chis nails. It was so easy to get at the right angle. We bought a pull up bar to hang it from
The pics are truly the best
I use a scratch board from Amazon. She learned to do the front pretty fast with a kibble reward between scratches and then I kind of hold her and put the board on an angle and drag her back paws against it (need to make sure the paws lift so the nails go out and the paw pads themselves don’t touch the board). She’ll literally fall asleep in my arms for this part. Its reduced the stress by like 90%
Awesome, I will try that out! Thanks!
Hey everyone! I'm trying to decide between a few dog nail grooming tools and would love some opinions.
I'm considering:
- 2-in-1 EZ Nail Clipper and File Dog Grooming Tool
- Premium Power Nail Clipper Dog Grooming Tool (Orange)
- Large Nail Clipper Dog Grooming Tool (Orange)
- Andis Pet Nail Clipper
Currently, I have Miller's Forge (red) nail clippers, but they've gone blunt after a year of using it on my border collie and the red-handed design keeps slipping. Looking for something more durable and reliable.
I'm based in Western Australia
Any recommendations or experiences with these nail clippers would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
I like the Safari nail clippers.
For a dremel I've started using a Ryobi USB Lithium rotary tool(model FVM51). Kind of annoying to recharge but other than that works great!
I've tried the Dremel 7350. It works ok. Single speed though. And don't ever drop it.
I've also tried the Andis dremel tool. The safety stop feature doesn't work very well. It will catch hair and keep turning but you press down a little too hard on the nail and it cuts off.
Diamond G rotary tools. Seems solid so far. The lights on them are kind of annoying though. Overpriced.
My exact nail trimming combo. Those Aussie dog clippers are magic!

I love the Aussie Dog nail cutter from Frank Lowe and Son online. I'm certain they private label another cutter, but I don't know which one.
My husky is a rescue and absolutely hates having his nails trimmed, ESPECIALLY his front paws. I tried using nail clippers and got through his back paws okay, but when I got to his front paws we both hated it. I feel like a nail grinder would do what it needs to do for his health and well-being, but without damaging our relationship, since this is a very scary thing for him (I don't know if there's trauma associated with this before I got him.. I have a funny feeling there is). Does anyone have good nail grinders they would recommend? Especially ones that are very quiet.
Help!
Our nail grinder is the groomer we take him too. Lol. He hates his paws touched, so I don't even want to go there.
I got mine this one. It is, in fact, quiet. He’s mostly fine with it but has whatever the dog version of kitty minutes is, and gets tired of being restrained after a while. It does also get hot, so just be aware of that. You can always get them trimmed at the groomer and then just do the dremel for like weekly maintenance.
This is the one we have, it’s pretty beginner friendly and the sandpaper isn’t that rough so I don’t worry too much about catching his hair or going too far. My husky sounds exactly the same as yours and honestly it was nail grinder or being put under via the vet. It’s worked out so far.
Does he have anywhere he’s allowed to dig? Mines has a designated hole and I bury and then wet a pumice stone in it so it sets and he has to dig it out, if that makes sense? It really gets those front nails down (and energy levels which bonus)
Brindle nails are all colors. Does anyone have recommendations? We just broke the last pair and I would like to find something that has a light or a clipping storage. Thank you in advance! Dog tax included 🥰
My dog absolutely hated clippers. I started off with a pet Dremel 7300 (the pet grooming kit) but ended up buying a Dremel 4000 since the grooming kit lacked the torque needed to sustain a steady speed when the discs ended up being worn down in the slightest. You can buy the pet adapter separately and put it on the 4000. The 4000 is quite large so your dog will need to be lying on his side to fit underneath the paws. Either model is a huge advantage over the clippers though.

Dremel for the Win.
My EM walks daily with me on various pavement types and we've never had to trim them.
My French mastiff never loved clippers so I got a nail grinder off Amazon, works great and it doesn’t give him anxiety now.
best dog nail grinders
Key Considerations for Choosing a Dog Nail Grinder:
Power and Speed: Look for a grinder with adjustable speed settings. This allows you to control the grinding speed based on your dog's comfort level and nail thickness.
Noise Level: Choose a quieter model to minimize stress for your dog. Some grinders are specifically designed to operate quietly.
Battery Life vs. Corded: Decide between a cordless model for convenience and mobility or a corded model for consistent power. Cordless models should have a long battery life (at least 2 hours).
Safety Features: Look for grinders with safety guards to prevent over-grinding and to protect your dog's nails from injury.
Ease of Use: Consider the design and grip of the grinder. A comfortable grip will make it easier for you to handle during the grooming process.
Portability: If you travel frequently or want to groom your dog on the go, a lightweight and portable grinder is beneficial.
Recommendations:
Dremel 7300-PT: This is a popular choice among pet owners. It has two speed settings, a rechargeable battery, and is relatively quiet. The Dremel brand is well-known for its durability and effectiveness.
PetSafe EasySport Nail Grinder: This model is user-friendly, has a safety guard, and features a low noise level, making it great for anxious dogs.
Bousnic Dog Nail Grinder: This is a budget-friendly option that offers a rechargeable battery, adjustable speed, and a quiet operation, making it suitable for dogs of all sizes.
Takeaway: Choose a grinder that fits your dog's needs and your grooming preferences. A good nail grinder can make the grooming process smoother and less stressful for both you and your pet.
