Durability and Comfort
When selecting a dog crate, durability and comfort are key considerations. Kuranda beds are noted for their indestructibility and can be used inside crates to start the transition from crate to bed [1:3]. For dogs that chew or destroy bedding, opting for a firm bed like the Big Barker, which is made of firm foam wrapped in waterproof plastic, can prevent damage and provide support for older dogs
[1:5].
Crate Training and Integration
Crate training can be an effective way to integrate new dogs into a household. It's common practice to allow resident dogs free range while new rescues stay crated initially. This approach allows new dogs to decompress safely at night and gradually adjust to their new environment [4:2]. Over time, as trust builds and the new dog learns house rules, more freedom can be introduced
[4:3].
Size and Fit
The size of the crate should accommodate the dog's size comfortably. While specific recommendations for crate brands weren't discussed, ensuring the crate is spacious enough for the dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably is essential. Additionally, some users have found success with exercise pens as an alternative to traditional crates for young dogs who are not yet trustworthy alone [4:1].
Transitioning from Crate to Bed
Transitioning a dog from a crate to a bed can be challenging, especially if they have a history of chewing. Durable beds that are hard to chew and not easily dragged around, such as those from Costco, Samโs Club, or LL Bean, can be good options [1:1]
[1:4]. Monitoring interactions and introducing more freedom gradually can help ensure a smooth transition
[4:3].
Additional Considerations
Beyond the discussions, it's important to consider the dog's individual needs and preferences when choosing a crate. Some dogs may prefer the security of a crate, while others might enjoy the freedom of a bed. Observing your dog's behavior and comfort level can guide you in making the best choice for them.
Looking for recommendations on a good bed for this guy (4 yrs old). He has slept in his crate since he was a pup, and he does like it but weโd like to try a bed for him. The crate is big and noisy (heโs in the bedroom with us) and i feel like it isnโt cozy enough. We bought two beds to transition him from the crate at a year but he was such a rascal with chewing them that we stopped. Ready to try again. Looking for durable, hard to chew, and something he couldnโt easily pick up, drag downstairs and hump (we had a Foggy Doggy brand bed and Lands End bed and he ripped the covers for both).
Thanks!
Kuranda have supposedly indestructible dog beds but they are a bit pricier. They have low legged ones for inside crates if you wanted to start off inside, and then remove the crate to aid the transition. I have one with a pad and pups like it
We have 2. Lab and cats like them! The pads are great. We have a fluffy one for cold weather and cordura (i think) for the rest of the year. The aluminum frame is nice and lightweight.
We got ours at Samโs club. I think it was about $50. She also has an LL Bean dog bed
we have wasted a lot of money on dogs beds over the last 20 years. Some are too soft, some don't wash well, some were eaten, ect.
The Big Barker bed was $$$ but we have had it for 10 years and its the favorite for the dogs and humans.
If you are lucky enough to have an old senior dog then you want a firmer bed. I think its easier for them to get up off .The BB bed is a firm foam wrapped in water proof plastic with a zip off cover .I don't like fluffy beds or those with filling. They are too tempting for them to chew and swallow pieces.
We keep ours covered with crib sheets that i buy cheap off of amazon.
Our super king sized Vi-Spring
Dude does not need a crate, ha, hes going to go mental when you take it away! We ditched ours after 10-11 months. Costco has 2 dog beds, one is pretty good, the other is light , we put that one on the porch.

Howdy! Someone we know is surrendering their large, energetic dog to a shelter, so we said we would take her instead. The dog is 10 months old and much larger than our small older dog who is 8 years old. Straight to the questions:
Appreciate your insights! Cheers!
We crate train all of our dogs. New rescues are quickly fully integrated with the family (in stepwise fashion). However they sleep in the crate in our room, while the resident dogs have free rangeโ this lets the resident dogs and the new dog safely decompress at night. Then after a period of a few months when everything is going well and everyone seems trustworthy, they can start sharing space at night as they choose. However, we donโt allow the new dog on the bed initially. With slow stepwise intentionality weโve never had an issue with sleep integration.
Yes, their routines donโt need to match exactly, especially at first while the new dog adjusts. One dog can sleep in the bed while the other stays in a crate, and one can roam while the other is crated during your absence, as long as both are safe and comfortable. Keep monitoring interactions and gradually introduce more freedom or shared spaces as the younger dog matures and learns house rules.
I foster dogs but only take in one at a time. Then I have my own 7 year old German shepherd. My fosters tend to be young about a year give or take 6 months. They are still in the chewing phase. Not reliably house trained High energy etc. My dog continues free roam as he is reliable. The fosters are in their kennel when we are at work and at night period. Otherwise they are free roam. I love helping dogs but they arenโt going to destroy our house. Or take the chance there is an incident with our dog.
Yes and yes
Make sure you do introductions properly!
I trust my 3 year old to be out of crate pretty much constantly now, but I do restrict her to a single room while gone. My 9 mo is not to be trusted alone ever, so crate or exercise pen for now.
Hazel was a dog loved by everyone who met her. Even people who didnโt like dogs would say Hazel was the exception. She was a car accident rescue at a young age who I am so happy my family was able to make a comfortable life for. She never bit or barked at anyone, would comfort those who needed it, and lived a life of total curiosity and excitement for being involved. Even in her last few months when she was old and struggling she sprung back into the her old athletic self for food, walks, and rides. I loved her as much as I could and I will always hold onto her memory.
Here are some of my favorite photos of her. Any words or illustrations would really warm my heart right now, and I could really use that.
Thank you :)

Lost my dog yesterday. Iโm a mess :(
Iโm so sorry! Whenever I think of my dog and how sheโs been nothing but loving toward me, I think of this lovely tribute Janicza Bravo wrote for her dog
I'm so sorry ๐ It's a pain like no other. Please take care of yourself.
There's an amazing essay written by a doctor who lost his wife to cancer (The Day I Started Lying to Ruth by Peter Bach). I wouldn't recommend reading the whole thing while you're fresh on the heels of grief - it's beautifully written but a raw, tough read - but I'd like to share the final paragraph. I revisit it frequently in times of grief:
"It turns out that Hollywood has grief and loss all wrong. The waves and spikes donโt arrive predictably in time or severity. Itโs not an anniversary that brings the loss to mind, or someone elseโs reminiscences, nor being in a restaurant where you once were together. Itโs in the grocery aisle passing the romaine lettuce and recalling how your spouse learned to make Caesar salad, with garlic-soaked croutons, because it was the only salad youโd agree to eat. Or when you glance at a rerun in an airport departure lounge and itโs one of the episodes that aired in the midst of a winter afternoon years earlier, an afternoon that you two had passed together. Or on the rise of a full moon, because your wife, from the day you met her, used to quote from The Sheltering Sky about how few you actually see in your entire life. Itโs not sobbing, collapsing, moaning grief. Itโs phantom-limb pain. It aches, it throbs, thereโs nothing there, and yet you never want it to go away."
Thank you for this ๐ฉต today I cried because I missed his tail wagging and loudly banging on the oven door when it was time for him to eat, it was the most painful silence Iโve heard
I feel for her. I lost my dog four months ago tomorrow and I don't think I'll ever be the same.
10 years for me and I can't think about him for more than a moment without tearing up. They have such beautiful souls and make such a mark on our lives. So sorry for your loss.
Yes! thank you Jessica for encouraging people - even in your time of grief - to adopt rather than shop when they are ready to find their new best friend.
Iโve found that giving a rescue pet a new home is a great way to honor a passed petโs life once the grief has subsided a bit โฅ๏ธ
:( I so empathise with that first line - itโs surprisingly so hard to talk about losing a dog (or any pet really). I lost my little man in Feb and still struggle to mention him even in passing most of the time because I get such a lump in my throat so quickly. I really feel for Jessica and I think this is such a lovely message to share. Iโm sure her little guy is happy wherever he is โค๏ธ
iโm sorry for your loss ๐ฉท
thank you โค๏ธ my little man got to an amazing age (17!) so I just try to be thankful that I got so much time with him ๐ฅน

I got Oliver on Saturday(see my previous post) and they gave me a large metal crate for him
I had put it in my kitchen, left it open with his dog bed and he went in and out of it all day on his own. Ate, slept, sniffed, etc.
Last night however was a different story. He destroyed his bed, and then destroyed the plastic tray at the bottom. And somehow in all that hurt his paw where i had to mop up a small puddle about 6-8 inches of mostly slobber, drool and a small amount of blood.
I gave him a quick shower to rinse his paws off and just moved him into my bedroom where he spent the rest of the night peacefully sleeping at my side. I have no issues sleeping with me but I am trying to get him acclimated to my cat. So I figured letting her roam at night while hes in the kitchen let's her see and sniff him of her own volition.
But he started going crazy as soon as i turned off the lights.
I tried giving him a Kong toy filled with peanut butter and that worked for 15 minutes before he was back to destroying his cage.
I dont know how well I can trust him not to use the bathroom in my house while im gone or if hes destructive or not. He has only pooped 4 times since Saturday and 3 have been in my house despite multiple 2-3 mile walks. But I also dont want to leave him alone in a crate with no bottom and just metal bars. I feel thats inhuman. But ive no idea what to do
If youโre too nervous to leave puppy in their kennel while youโre at work, my suggestion would be to find a small area that in not carpeted and gate your puppy in there for the day. A bored puppy will chew things and also go potty when left. I would not leave the puppy to roam unattended until heโs been in your home several months to a year.
EDIT: I just reread your post and I see that you just got him a couple days ago. Do you know anything about his background? Leaving a dog who's new in your home who's not necessarily crate trained who may have a questionable past is always a risk. I'm sorry that it didn't work out. You may need to consider a different approach in leaving him. . . It can take months for a new dog to feel comfortable in the home, and it really sounds like your dog panicked. They may just not feel secure that they're not going to get left forever in a crate alone.
It could be that they have an adjusted yet or it could be separation anxiety. Hopefully it's just that he hasn't settled yet. He doesn't feel secure with you or in the home yet.
Generally dogs manage their (separation) anxiety better when they are not confined to a crate. If you can get an x pen to manage the space that he'll be in if you don't trust him loose that works. But the less confinement the better. Like if you have a small room you can leave him in or your kitchen or something like that it would be better.
I also did overnight care for years with dogs at a board and train and a lot of the dogs struggled the first few nights in the crate but we were able to help them adjust. They were just nervous about being in this place with all the strange smells and sounds, and were missing their people.
If you have any questions I'm happy to try to answer them or refer you to other sources.I know I threw a lot of stuff at you. Rescuing a dog is such a gift to the dog. He's just going to need a little time and a little extra help.
I'm not trying to scare you. It may just be that your dog just may need a settling in time and it was just too soon. The fact that the dog hasn't pooped outside for you even on a long walk means that he's probably feeling anxious still. The fact that you want to make sure that he's comfortable means that you care, and that's good. If there's any way to give him some time when you're not leaving him alone for 8 or 10 hours that would be best while he's getting used to your home.
Look into enrichment and regulating activities like chewing or licking or sniffing. These will help him to relax generally. If you can take him out in a walk in nature where it's quiet and you can walk slowly and he can just sniff to his heart's content that's going to help him relax too. It's also very mentally stimulating because that's how dogs take in the world. So he'll be likely to sleep and really relax after a good sniffy walk.
Dogs are like people in that they have a whole emotional world going on in their heads and most times it takes a minute for them to adjust and get used to things, and sometimes they need help with it.
Info about separation anxiety
Dogs who have separation anxiety are literally having a panic attack. So maybe they're okay for the first few minutes or hour but then The anxiety and panic start to build. If you have ever had a panic attack or an anxiety attack, that's what this is like for your dog. And they are desperate to get out, they are desperate to find you.
Julie Naismith has a dog separation anxiety support group on FB That is really helpful. They have a ton of information and the group is very supportive. Naismith also has a podcast which has a lot of good information. I know that I learned a lot in trying to help my dog.
One of the central tenets of good separation anxiety training is to never leave the dog alone longer than they can cope. So if the dog only lasts 15 seconds behind the door before they start to get worried then you have to find somebody to stay with the dog during the day or find a good daycare for him. It takes a minute to figure out if this is crate issue or separation. The group I mentioned above has information about determining a baseline that's pretty good. .
Put the puppy in the kennel, I felt so bad to put ours in one. Now she is safe and walks in by herself . She knows itโs time to take a nap and chill for a few hours. If u leave the dog in a room or somewhere it can chew on stuff it will .. kennel is safe
Can you do daycare? The one I take my dog to is $30 for 8 hours. I donโt do every day as sheโs usually wiped out the following day.
Hi! Question, did you wipe down the kennel? It may smell like other animals, may cause stress. If not... dont give up!
Try gradually introducing the kennel. You did great with the leaving it open, making it a happy place for your pup during the day. Things went wrong when the dog went in for an extended time, and without the dog understanding you will be back. Try again, open happy crate all day, treats, etc. Put dog in crate, leave for 10 mins, come back, treats & let out. Gradually extend how long you are leaving pup alone in the crate. This should help them understand they wont be alone long and that you come back soon. You and your dog will get the hang of things!!
Other things that help my dog pack be calm: warm blanket from the dryer, calming/soothing music, special attention before I leave, tv on animal videos, snuffle mat or interactive toys.

best dog crates
Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Dog Crate
Size: Ensure the crate is the right size for your dog. It should be large enough for them to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Measure your dog and refer to size charts provided by manufacturers.
Type of Crate:
Durability: Look for sturdy materials, especially if your dog is a chewer or tends to escape. Heavy-duty wire or reinforced plastic is preferable.
Ease of Cleaning: Choose a crate with a removable tray or easy-to-clean surfaces to simplify maintenance.
Portability: If you plan to travel with the crate, consider its weight and how easily it can be transported or set up.
Safety Features: Ensure there are no sharp edges or small parts that could pose a risk to your dog. Look for secure latches and a stable design.
Recommendations:
MidWest Homes for Pets iCrate: A highly rated wire crate that is durable, easy to clean, and comes in various sizes. It includes a divider panel for growing puppies.
Petmate Sky Kennel: A sturdy plastic crate ideal for travel, meeting airline regulations, and providing a secure environment for your dog.
EliteField 3-Door Folding Soft Dog Crate: A great option for portability, this soft-sided crate is lightweight and easy to set up, perfect for small dogs.
Choosing the right crate depends on your dog's size, behavior, and your specific needs, so consider these factors carefully to find the best fit!
