TL;DR
Comfort and Fit
Comfort is a key consideration when choosing a harness. The Hurtta Casual Harness is praised for its comfort and non-restrictive design, making it ideal for longer hikes [2:1]. Wild One harnesses are recommended for their soft padded mesh and adjustable fit, which can accommodate growing dogs
[1:1]. For smaller breeds like dachshunds, step-in harnesses such as Gooby and Charlie’s Backyard offer a better fit and ease of use
[1:2].
Security and Escape-Proof Design
For dogs that tend to pull or escape, Ruffwear harnesses are highly recommended. The Ruffwear Webmaster features two straps underneath, providing extra security and preventing escapes [3:1]. Additionally, the Ruffwear Front Range harness offers a double-point attachment that helps redirect pulling
[2:5].
Handle Features
A strong handle on the back of the harness can be useful for quick control. Joyride harnesses are favored for their sturdy handles, which allow for easy grabbing and control [4:2]. The True Love harness also includes a handle on the back, along with a front clip option for dogs that pull
[3:6].
Versatility and Additional Features
Some harnesses come with additional features such as pockets, crash-tested designs, or waterproof materials. The Kong pocket harness offers convenient storage options [2:2], while Happy Floof's harness is fully adjustable and super waterproof
[5:2]. For car rides, the Sleepypod Terrain provides crash-tested safety
[2:2].
Recommendations Beyond the Discussions
If you're looking for an Australian brand, consider exploring local options that specialize in Y-shaped harnesses, which are generally better for comfort and movement [5:6]. Additionally, Julius K9 Powerharnesses are popular for their robust design and customization options
[5:1].
I recently adopted a dachshund I already have a harness but I don’t like it much. What harness would everyone recommend. I’d prefer a vest harness Pics because he’s a cutie and I love him
While he’s still growing Voyager is a good option. He will outgrow a couple harnesses fairly quickly and Voyager is inex. I personally like step in harnesses for my Doxie, it fits his body better and easy to adjust and just has 1 clip. We use Gooby and Charlie’s Backyard.
We’re a big fan of wild one harnesses!
Came here to second Wild One! The soft padded mesh and multiple hookup points are great, and it's incredibly secure on our doxie mix. It's also comfortably sized up with her from puppy to young adult!
How precious!
felicitaciones!!!
I'm writing to ask for your expert advice on the best dog harnesses for every dog. I'm looking for a harness that is comfortable, secure, and easy to use. I also want to make sure that the harness is the right size for my dog.
I've done some research online, but I'm still feeling overwhelmed by the choices. I'm hoping that you can help me narrow down my options and find the perfect harness for my dog.
Here are a few things I'm looking for in a dog harness:
I'm also interested in learning more about the different types of dog harnesses available. I've seen harnesses with front clips, back clips, and no-pull features. I'm not sure which type of harness is best for my dog.
I'm hoping that you can share your knowledge and experience with me. I'm eager to learn about the best dog harnesses on the market and find the perfect one for my furry friend.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
A fellow dog owner
We recently acquired the Kong pocket harness and are quite pleased with it thus far (those pockets are a bonus!).
For car rides, we utilize the Sleepypod Terrain, one of the few crash-tested harnesses available. However, it's not the ideal fit for everyday walks, as it leaves some slack around the neck area.
Prior to that, we employed a Rabbitgoo harness for daily walks, and while it served its purpose, it wasn't the most comfortable fit for our dog, causing some rubbing in the armpits.
We made the error of trying the 2 Hounds Freedom harness when our pup was still teething. Unfortunately, the front horizontal strap proved to be easily accessible to her teeth and apparently made of flimsy material, as she managed to gnaw through it before we even left our yard. While it may be a suitable option for older dogs, our experience left us unimpressed.
For very young puppies, I strongly recommend purchasing an affordable, sale-priced harness that's appropriately sized for your pup, as they'll quickly outgrow it. This will save you unnecessary expenses as they transition through different sizes.
I like the minimalism of the Petsafe EasyWalk harness. It's front-clip with the leash ring on a small loop that tightens the harness across the dog's chest slightly when pulled. It's been the right amount of feedback necessary for my 45lb Shepherd mix to learn loose leash walking.
I also have a ruffwear front range and a wonder walker. I started with the ruffwear and loved how comfortable it seemed. My girl could wear it all day without a problem. But it didn't help with leash training or pulling while walking.
I tried the wonder walker based on her trainer's recommendation and it was like magic. She wears it for all her walks and it has helped so much with her loose leash training.
She is a 6-month-old lab/hound mix who already weighs 40 pounds and is strong. I definitely recommend the wonder walker for leash training.
Ruffwear's double point harness is an excellent choice for dogs that pull. For around $45, you can get this fantastic harness that helps with pulling by attaching the leash to the front d-ring, which leads from the chest. If your dog pulls, they'll simply turn around.
For even more stability and control, you can also use double-clasped leashes that clip onto both d-rings.
I swear by the casual harness by Hurtta. Love it, and my dog doesn't mind it (she hates all harnesses and clothes). We also use the Freedom No Pull Harness for most walks, but if we go on longer hikes I don't like how it goes across the shoulders in the front, so I opt for the Hurtta harness which doesn't restrict mobility at all.
I’ve been through a few harnesses for my guy, so far the best I’ve used is the embark harness I purchased on Amazon for just under $40 (size M in pic for 55lb pibble) What’s the best harness you’ve used, for comfort, fit, etc?
We have an escape artist who has an intense dislike of the dog across the street so we use the Ruffwear Webmaster harness (pictured below) because it has the two straps underneath. He has not been able to pull out of this. It has a front attachment point as well, but it’s a strong fabric instead of metal so I don’t use it for him. The handle on top is super useful if we encounter his nemesis out on our walks.
+1 for the big ruffwear harnesses.
Are comfy, have small little extras and she can't escape them.
We had the small one before, but if she wants she makes her shoulders small, and walks backwards out of it.
The big one doesn't allow that.
Same here. We started with the smaller ruffwear harness and he got out of it one day when his nemesis was walking by. In hindsight, we don’t think he would’ve hurt the dog, but it was a very scary moment for everyone involved and I bought this harness that day.
Another vote for ruffwear. I bought a couple of other brands, before getting the ruffwear and the search was over they will also send parts and pieces to repair any damage your dog may cause for free, and excellent bonus! My dog chewed a buckle and a simple phone call was all it took. Great products from a great company.
This harness is the best, hands down! The handle definitely comes in handy lol
“Oh, you best bet I’ll find a way out of this harness.”
His side eye is on point!
Oooh haha, he reminds me of my old pibble Bella 🥰. The little 45 pounder drug me on my knees after her nemesis.
Another photo of Hershey wearing his harness.
Hi Hershey! I've tried many harnesses and Embark has been the best so far!
I’ve been using the True Love harness for years now and love it. I use the front clip because she’s a puller otherwise, and I love that there’s a handle on the back. It’s a great price for the quality.
2hounds harness is awesome
None of them my dog is fucking Houdini, she needs a lead on her collar and the harness so when she decides to do her “fuck this shit I’m out” she is still tethered at the neck
looking for a new harness. the main thing i want is a strong handle on top so i can grab my dog fast. colors and buckles dont matter much but the handle is a must. if you have one you like or hate would love to hear about it. want something that actually lasts.
The Joyride harness has been my go-to for exactly that reason. The handle on the back is sturdy enough to actually grab and control your dog quickly, and the overall build feels solid not one of those flimsy handles that’s just stitched on as an afterthought
Joyride. Easy to put on and very durable. A little costly but worth it imo
Wilderdog
I havee tried a few harnesses with a handle on top. Ruffwear felt way too bulky. Kurgo never fit right. The Joyride one has been my favorite. Its super easy to get on and off. Its held up really well over the last few years.
I like that brand as well.
2 hounds
I’m looking for some advice on finding the best harness for my dog. There are so many options out there, and it’s a bit overwhelming! I’ve heard that Y-shaped harnesses are generally better for comfort and movement, but I’d love to know what’s worked for you and your pup.
I’m mainly after something that’s comfortable, secure, and easy to put on. Bonus points if it has a front-clip option or a handle on the back.
Would love to hear your recommendations! (I’m from Australia, so any Aussie brands would be great also)
EDIT: We ended up purchasing the Poquito Pets Y-Harness, it ticked all of the boxes we needed (Y shape, adjustable and back handle), thanks to the comments below. The price & quality is pretty great - the service was also fast, we didn’t know which size would best suit our Cavoodle and they were able to help us out.
We love Happy Floof's harness! fully adjustable + super waterproof. It cleans so easily too.
I like the Sofa Dogs Wear from Czech. Nice fit on Whippets and Greyhounds.
We have always used 2 Hounds Design. They are very well made and they have a large variety of colors and designs. Our dog gnawed through one and they replaced it with no questions, we only paid $10 for postage.
Definitely a Y harnesses, we have some that are neck adjustable and others are all-rounders
I won’t give brands as I’m in Aus and don’t know if they ship internationally but here’s some photos to show the difference between the 2: https://imgur.com/a/5PnXBO4
Thank you for the info! I ended up finding an Aussie brand that sells Y harnesses, it ticks all the boxes
We use julius k9 powerharness for both of our dogs
Both with matching name tags of course
Hey everyone! What are everyone’s favourite harnesses? Can you get ones that grow with dog? As my boy is only 5 months old but is growing so fast! Thanks!!
Rabbitgoo no pull harness . Has a clip on the front and back. A handle on the back in case you need to grab them. Had ours for years and it's still in perfect condition. Our girl was 5 months, strong, and impulsive when we got her. This harness helped tremendously in being able to keep a strong adhd dog safe and was useful in our training. You can buy them on Amazon
As many others will suggest, Bullybillows is a solid choice. Our boy is 1 and wears the air mesh model in the middle size 3, with some room left for adjustment.
BullyBillows
Gorgeous baby!
Woof concept from Vancouver. Only one that fits my boy well.
He's 2 now and 65 lbs. Wears a medium.
Sorry if this has been asked before. I love running with my 3y old collie but I think a harness would be much safer. Do you guys have any recommendations?
I use a ruffwear front range harness for runs. I like that it’s padded but not bulky, and appreciate the metal connection point for the leash on the back (he’s allowed to pull when we run, metal stands up to that better). It also has a front connection point we can switch to if we go somewhere after a run where loose leash walking is required.
Grand, I'll look into them thanks!
I understand your concern and wanting the best harness for your active Collie companion! Try Ruffwear Front Range Harness This padded harness has excellent adjustability and a durable build, making it great for most dogs.
The one that fits your dog is the best one. It also depends on how you want your dog to run - canicross or loose leash.
Ruffwear suits some dogs, but for deep chested breeds they often sit too close to the elbow/armpit and cause rubbing/chafe over time.
Dog copenhagen air walk is another good one that tends to fit deeper chested dogs well.
The nonstop dogwear line harness is good if you are thinking you might want to try canicross as it is a good multipurpose harness especially for light pullers.
Another important aspect is your leash - a good bungy leash can make a huge difference.
I use nonstop to amazing effect love all their products
Personally I am a Ruffwear convert - I have used several different brands over the years but now both my two use their Webmaster harnesses without issue. The handle is also super useful for any stiles or particularly difficult rocky bits.
What did you get for your dog?
I got Dee's from LupinePet. They make two kinds, one is step in, one is called Roman. Dee's had hers for 4 yrs now. I'd like to try her on one of the front legs only type but so far, she's been doing great on the Lupine.
Gooby escape free easy fit!
I prefer the one that only is for their front legs. It keeps the pressure off their trachea which can be an issue.
Puppia!
I bought a Puppia harness for mine.
what type or brand of harness does your dog wear and why do you like it? i’m looking for a good sturdy harness for my dog but there’s so many options im not sure what to choose. he’s not a crazy puller but id like some more control. just looking for one that is considered the “safest”; no risk to choke them. with a front ring attachment preferably.
Its of course what is best for you, but I found I had less control with a harness than with a leash. He would just pull against it with all his strength against his chest. There were times when he was younger I used a slip collar, but I've had the most success stopping and turning around when he pulls (ad nauseum) and then "nnooooo" when he pulls, and "gooooood" when its slack. I can now guide him with slight pressure from my finger.
Not the answer you’re looking for, but harnesses were strongly not recommended by our breeder. They interfere with the dog’s gait and can make them pull more. It took time and lots of positive reinforcement but our PWD walks very nicely on a leash now
I really prefer collar for walking all dogs . I find the responsiveness and communication through the leash to be so much more effective than a harness. I'm not choking or harming the dogs when I give a short tug .
Agreed!
so u just use a collar? idk i worry about their neck and if there ever an emergency or something i wouldn’t feel as comfortable as with a harness on
Yes! It’s totally fine.
Martingale collar
I would just use a slip lead until they are like 6 months then use a prong collar. Then transition to just regular collar
Love Non-Stop Dogwear front pull- out of the way of shoulders, they have great customer service for fitting
I have a Shih tzu who thinks he’s a sled dog. While we work on that, I want to put him in a harness to protect his neck. There are so many styles!! Is there a difference? What’s the best one?
I’d recommend that you go to a pet supply store and get someone to help you try on harnesses. Different styles work best for different dogs.
Sled dogs wear harnesses, a harness is likely just going to make him pull even more. I use a martingale collar with my dog, and even now during our walks we do a little of the loose leash training we did at the start partly to keep it fresh for him and partly because he seems to enjoy it.
Small dogs in particular are susceptible to tracheal collapse, so they need to be in harnesses if they’re pullers to prevent that.
We have tried one.
