TL;DR
Lichess
Lichess is highly recommended across multiple discussions due to its simplicity and comprehensive features. It offers a clean interface and is completely free, including puzzles and learning materials [1:7]
[2:3]
[3:1]. The app allows users to play online against others and includes useful features like analysis tools
[2:5]. However, some users find the mobile site more feature-rich than the app itself
[1:3]
[3:11].
http://Chess.com is another popular choice, praised for its robust set of features and user-friendly interface [1:2]
[4:1]. While it offers many features, some are behind a paywall, such as advanced puzzles and lessons
[5:2]. Users appreciate its native app feel on both iOS and Android, making it a preferred choice for mobile use
[4:2]. Despite this, some users have reported occasional crashes on mobile devices
[2:2].
Cross-Platform Play
Both Lichess and http://Chess.com allow cross-platform play between Android and iOS users, making them suitable for playing with friends or family across different devices [5:2]. They work well in web browsers too, so downloading the app isn't necessary for gameplay
[5:5].
Additional Options
For those interested in offline play, "Chess for Android" by Aart Bik is recommended for its ability to play against an engine without internet access [3:2]. Another notable mention is Chessbase, which offers extensive features for game analysis and recording
[4:3].
Overall, both Lichess and http://Chess.com provide excellent options for mobile chess enthusiasts, each with unique strengths catering to different preferences.
I just got an Iphone after years with a droid. I went ahead and downloaded the Optime software app I had years ago with Iphone but it's still glitchy. Pre smart phone days you could get the old school Chess Master which would give you opening names and what not. That's kind of what I'm looking for. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
I play on both lichess and chess.com and I greatly prefer the chess.com app
Play on lichess.org, the app is fine but the mobile site has additional puzzle features which are very useful (choose puzzle themes, puzzle streak, puzzle rush).
Lichess or Chess.com depending on what side of the fence you sit on but both are good
It’s always lichess, regardless of the device.
I love lichess and always recommend people play on there. When my friends want to download an app and play against me, I tell them to download chess.com. I have had a hard time creating games with my friends on the lichess phone app. I don't know why it's so difficult. It's so simple to play against a random person, but so difficult to play against your friend.
Interesting, thanks for that feedback! I must admit that I’ve never attempted that on the app. Maybe I should have added the info that the app version has some limited features compared to the full experience of the browser version (which is also usable on smartphones).
I still think that the lichess interface is simpler than chesscom though, because chesscom offers so many more (mostly paid) things. When I started looking at that, I was a bit overwhelmed, and still don’t feel particularly comfortable maneuvering through the site.
All you need to do is click the big Play with A Friend button and it creates a link to a game. They don't even need the app.
I suspect you can just challenge people if you're logged in via the app just like you can on the site, but I haven't actually logged into the app and don't know my password so I can't check for you right now.
Hey all,
Just bought Chess Ultra on Nintendo Switch and became hooked again to chess! I'm nothing special as a player but I'm keen to get back into it!
I've read through the intro post but couldn't find any recommendations for mobile apps for chess... Which is the best?
Lichess has the better app imo, chess.com app crashes for me on both android and iOS. Great on PC but not great on mobile devices.
I've tried so many other chess apps and I think Lichess is the best choice for android.
Sound, I downloaded it and gave it a shot. So far so good!
Any pointers for the app at all?
Not really any pointers for the app specifically.. other than make sure you use the analysis feature as much as possible and learn from your mistakes.
Lichess for me!
Chess.com and lichess.org both have apps that are great
I'm a night shift worker and my wife works during the day. We both love chess and I thought it would be fun to play on our phones wile at work (I have alot of down time, it's just part of the job) thanks for the help. I'm not sure if this is the right sub for this kind of question so please remove if not allowed.
If you ever decide you want an offline-only app, Chess for Android by Aart Bik is the best option. But for your situation, definitely Lichess. Or chess.com if you like having to pay for features.
Chess.com
Li.chess good! Chess dot com bad! Boo!
lichess.org
Easy to use, many useful features, completely free.
And according to Eric Rosen the mobile website is better than the app.
One advantage of the app is offline play vs engine, play vs friend on the same phone and offline engine analysis.
I can't play on the mobile website, the squares aren't mapped to the screen correctly so literally 1/3 of my moves go to wrong squares. It's actually unusable. Doing puzzles on the website works fine though
My problem with playing on the website on mobile is there’s a lot of stuff you can’t see unless you scroll down. Draw offers, chat, hell half the time I don’t even realize they’ve resigned for a minute until I notice the clocks have stopped.
The app is still missing some great features.
Can't choose puzzle themes or play puzzle rush or Streak on the app.
lichess.org
chess.c*m bad , lichess good💪
Sure thing. You do need to register an account, but that’s it. Have fun :)
I would like vs people online and also and app that trains you in more advanced techniques. If you have any recommendations i would be glad to check em out.
As much as people pump up Lichess I'm afraid to say that chess.com's mobile app is better. It's built as a native app for both IOS and Android, where Lichess doesn't feel like a native app at all.
If we're talking about best server to play on via the browser then yes, it's an easy sell for Lichess. But if you're strictly playing mobile I'd give chess.com a try first.
To expand on this, Chessable and Chesstempo don't have native apps, however you can create a bookmark on your home screen for each site so they pseudo-function like launching apps when you tap the icon for them. They both work well enough.
The chess.com app is honestly lovely. It's not perfect but I prefer it to the lichess app. I switch between the two.
My friend, the single best app is Chessbase. It has lots of features. I even bought it about a year ago. It's great! You can watch games, analyse them, record your own games in a databse etc.
Chess.com
Lichess.
Are there any good free Chess apps that lets Android users play with iOS users online?
Preferably ones that don't have ads and have an easy user interface since it's mainly for my dad and uncle to play each an other.
Both are in their 60s so they are not the best with using mobile phones, inviting and joining online games.
Lichess and chess.com can both do this. You don't even need the app, both work in web browsers. Chess.com has some paywalled features(completely outside of gameplay. They offer puzzles and lessons and stuff) and ads. But, they both work. Lichess has completely free puzzles and learning materials if either person is interested in that. I'm not sure which interface would be easier for someone in their 60's to learn.
Having done this with my mom: chess.com UI for sure
Lichess/Chess.com
Chess.com
Using Lichess as an example, you could help them with the initial account creation, app installation and login. Link their two accounts as friends.
Now after telling each other over the phone that they're ready for a game, all they have to do is launch the app, tap the friends icon, challenge the other person to a game.
They can even leave their phone call/Skype call/WhatsApp call active, and chat to each other during the game. They can create a correspondence game where each side plays a move whenever he's free, with the game taking a week. They can play a real-time game while also having several correspondence games on the side. They can play against similarly-rated strangers if one of them isn't free. They can learn using Lichess training materials and practise, all for free.
Lichess
I had a break from Chess for a while and always used Chess.com, and returning I was tempted to subscribe for the puzzles and lessons, but then I found lichess with unlimited free puzzles, and Chessable with unlimited free lessons. Seeing if there's any other recommendations.
lichess
I've only just started using that, but I really like it.
Yeah, it's awesome
Lichess but specifically not the app since the app doesn't let you choose puzzle themes, and doesn't have Puzzle Streak or Storm, so I just use the mobile site which works perfectly.
I'll try that thanks, I've just been using the app.
Those are just 3 things I very frequently want to do, so yeah I barely use the app. I use it all to play against bots on airplanes offline, that's about it.
The app will probably be updated to include those things eventually, they are all relatively new to the website.
Thanks
Lichess and chesscom are the two big ones. You can play games for free on both but Lichess is all free, whereas for extra features chesscom needs a paid membership. Try them out and see which one you like more I guess
I prefer lichess but chesscom has better app imo, and if you play on website on mobile lichess is better than chesscom app, thats what i do
Both chesscom and lichess are great. Lichess has no ads and everything is literally for free. Also if you play a lot of fadter format games Lichess is way better when it comes to time scramble. I think Lichess reduces your time by half a second per premove or even lesser when chesscom reduces by 0.1. It sounds not a lot but a premove can win you the game
Chess dot com works great on android
Lichess. I had to uninstall chessdotcom since it refused to work on my android for some reason.
Also contacted the support but no chance. Evemtually gave up on it.
Any opinion would be great!
Lichess is a completely free app and website where you can play online with friends, strangers or use the many resources to learn.
Chess.com is another most used app and website where you can play online but most other features require a paid subscription.
Both of them work with both Android and iOS. Choose one which suits you best and whose UI is to your preference.
:)
either are fine
Lichess is fine.

Thanks! Saved me a lot of time. Looks like a good one
People really downvoting him for this 😭😭😭
Hi...
I am looking for recommendations on a good Chess app. By "good" I mean the UI should be attractive, it should not consume too much system resources, and the game engine should be very good. I am only looking to play against the game engine and not another human.
I am willing, if necessary, to buy the app but absolutely no ads and it should be a "safe" app/dev.
Thanks!
Thanks. I'll take a look.
Just throwing it out there.
Thanks. Good to see this is on Fdroid too! I'll check it out!
Best out there, IMHO.

Is that an app?
Hmm

Well built app. I have been using Offline Chess and feature wise, this is similar for now.
Would be nice to mute the sounds though. iCloud backup of progress too.
Thank you! Will allow that (sound settings) in next version
