Why are there no professional 2D top-down online games made with GameMaker?
Posted by ComprehensiveCorgi72 · in r/gamemaker · 6 days agoI’ve always admired the incredible 2D top-down games made with GameMaker Studio, like Hyper Light Drifter and CrossCode. They really show how polished and creative top-down games can be.
But one thing I’ve noticed: there don’t seem to be any professional-looking 2D top-down games with online features—not just in GameMaker, but even in other engines.
I’ve been developing my own 2D top-down MMORPG (Swords & Crystals) in GameMaker for six years, about 30 hours a week, and the beta is playable on Steam. Building an MMORPG in GameMaker is tough, but doable with the right networking framework and perseverance. As part of my research, I’ve been looking for similar projects or competitors to learn from, but I’ve noticed that there doesn't seem to be a professional 2D top-down MMORPG out there. At least, not one that really stands out.
The only serious online 2D top-downs there seems to exists at all, are:
- Tales of Yore Online, which is a fun game, but I personally feel like it’s a bit too simplistic for what I’m aiming to create or what I would play myself.
- Drakantos Online looks promising and has a lot of potential, though I only think the graphics feel a bit repetitive. Plus, it’s still not released
It's interesting to think about why this gap exists in the first place. Steam is flooded with new releases every week, but a solid 2D top-down MMORPG seems like it could really stand out. Imagine a game in the vein of Hyper Light Drifter or CrossCode, but with online features—meeting other players in towns, teaming up for quests, tackling competitive bosses together, or even having a player-run economy. Honestly, I'd play that in a heartbeat.
So I’m curious: is this a missed opportunity, or is there a real reason why no one is pursuing it?
Someone with more networking experience can maybe comment on why we don't see MMO's but as far as online/coop they still seem to get made. Tinkerlands is not exactly the same style you mentioned but close. It came out in E.A. this year and has both a publisher and decent reviews.

I have stress tested my online game with 50 players together in the same world which went just fine, i just dont know the exact limit yet, but also that could be solved with multiple servers or layers or whatever.
I use Warp by Evoleo as networking framework for gamemaker.

Tinkerlands dev here. Online is a massive headache, avoid at all costs.
Jokes aside, making something work online for you is one thing, making it work for all kinds of people and devices around the world is a whole different beast. MMOs add lots of different layers of complexity upon that.
An MMO in gamemaker is absolutely possible, but the hard part is not usually the tech.

I have actually developed a top-down Online PVP game with gamemaker soon to release mid October. I also developed my own server software for it using gamemaker itself, it should be able to handle about 300-400 concurrent players on each server.
The big reason why no one makes online games in gamemaker, is because most people don't know how. Most GMS2 users are Novices and Beginners who just want to figure out how to make their character move left and right. Online is one the most complex systems you can use.
I'd also say that 99% of indie games on steam that use online services, use Unity Assets / Unreal Actor Replication to make their online work, since it is so advanced for them, along with using Steam Matchmaking services so they don't have to develop their own server software. Most indies try to avoid proper networking altogether.
AAA don't even use gamemaker. Since most engines already do what gamemaker does and more, they aren't going to justify using software that most commercial devs don't use, and one that requires them to do most of the work themselves. It's quicker and easier in the end for them. Not to mention that large scale games from AAA devs use server softwares that have already been built for them previously.
Despite this, GMS2 has probably the best raw Networking Capabilities I have ever seen in a game engine. Making it one of the most customize-able and efficient engines when it comes to online. But, most people just want online done for them quickly with as least hassle as possible. Reasonably so. No need to re-invent the wheel if you just want quick results.
From a development perspective, the type of game you are describing is incredibly expensive to develop, incredibly expensive to maintain, and requires are large player base to be worthwhile for the players.
From a player's perspective, the type of game you are describing requires a huge time sink, there is a finite amount of interested players in the world, and those players only have so many hours to devote to gaming and are unlikely to drop a game they've already sunk a bunch of time into to make room for a new MMORPG.
So basically, the small handful of successful MMORPGs are edge cases as there simply aren't enough interested players with enough free time in the world to support more than a few of them.
Hero Siege is a moderately successful example of this. Not without its own warts of course.
I’ve been working on one for about 2 years actually, but since I rely on buying assets online, I feel like it’s generally not picked up quickly. I get some decent feedback on it every now and then, but it’s hard to get noticed on Steam man! Anyway, once you learn networking in GMS and managing external webservers and databases it’s not so complicated

When you look at Devers numbers each year he doesnt look super special however is there a safer bet for guaranteed consistent production . Switch him to one of the toughest hitting environments in the world with a worse lineup no problem. Still top 10 in exit velocity and hard hit percentage that makes about 6years in a row.

I’m in an auction contract league. Waiver wire pickups are $15. I punt on saves and got for SP in RP position to get IP, QS, Ks, etc. I have Smith and had Bubic each for $1 with RP eligibility. Once Bubic went down I traded for Clay Holmes on a $7 expiring contract who also has RP eligibility.

Germany had very few top players after Lasker (who never played any Olympiad) but still a fair amount of Olympiad medals and one of them being a gold. Maybe more surprising that France never even won a medal given a fair amount of top players representing the country, from Alekhine and Spassky to Bacrot, Firouzja and MVL. Even if Firouzja maybe doesn’t play Olympiads.
Germany never had super strong team, they've always had more no of decent players. They never had a breakout star since Lasker(maybe Hubner). Winning olympiad involves lot of factors including good amount of luck(pairings, SB,etc), except the last olympiad in no other olympiad there was clearly one dominant team(which was probably the most insane team performance in chess history and I don't think we'll witness again), there were always a couple of teams which were in reckoning, almost all of the olympiads were decided by Sonneborn berger. This without mentioning the obvious Soviet domination factor.

Shut the fuck up. The Soviets trounced 1954 olympiad with a 10+ 1= score, the 1960 olympiad with a 11+ (!!) all wins score, 1962 olympiad with a 10+ 1= score, 1966 olympiad with a 10+ 1= score, and 1968 olympiad with a 10+ 2= score (they scored 7.5 points over the second team in this one!!)
So don't pretend like the Indians accomplished something ground breaking when the Soviets were accomplishing this on a regular routine. The reality why the Germans didn't win anything is because the Soviets hogged every single Olympiad from 1952 to 1990 (and 2012 if you count former nations) except for one they boycotted and another which Hungary went on a miracle run for.
I hope you can read the last sentence. The whole point was on having better pairings, luck in SB, but ofcourse you see what you want to, coz the discussion wasn't even about Indian performance in the olympiad. Now getting to your point, the formats in those olympiads(which had prelims and then Finals) and the Budapest are completely different, not sure what you are comparing and yapping about. This is still the best performance in this format.

2018 pre chess boom is crazy
A rare World Championship which is between the world #1 and #2, and the closest anyone came to dethroning Magnus.
Even though it came out to 12 draws, I still remember the excitement everyone felt watching each game, like any one of those games could have been THE game to change everything in the chess world. It was crazy exciting times.
Imagine if FIDE actually tried to make chess a bit more flashy.

Kinda hard to do with the nature of Chess players and chess itself (not complaining this is a sport that revolves around thinking) to make things more popular among people you need to like shout, make expressions and all that. Not something the Chess fraternity will engage in.
I mean they're already doing it by embracing shorter time controls and freestyle more than ever. Those are formats that are exciting to watch, not 66 hr classical slogs. Almost everyone I know prefers to watch game recaps than sit thru an entire classical match.
