TL;DR
Gel-Filled Cooling Mats
Gel-filled cooling mats are popular choices for keeping pets cool during heatwaves. These mats work by absorbing heat from the pet's body and dispersing it when the pet leaves the mat [2:4]. The gel inside these mats has high specific heat and thermal conductivity, which makes them effective at cooling
[2:9]. However, it's important to avoid placing them in direct sunlight, as this can cause them to harden and lose effectiveness
[2:1]. Brands like the American Kennel Club offer reliable options that have been praised by users
[3:1].
Ceramic Tiles
Ceramic tiles are a great non-gel alternative for cooling pets, especially rabbits. They can be purchased individually from hardware stores and stay cool even without being placed in the freezer [4:2]
[4:6]. Some users recommend freezing the tiles briefly during hot weather to enhance their cooling effect
[4:2].
Frozen Water Bottles
Another simple and effective method is using frozen water bottles. Pets can lay next to or on these bottles to cool down, and they provide a source of condensation for hydration [4:1]
[5:3]. This method is particularly useful for rabbits and small animals who may chew through gel mats
[4:4].
DIY Solutions
For those looking for DIY solutions, some users suggest using thawing plates or creating setups with frozen water bottles and fans to circulate cold air [2:7]
[5:6]. These methods can be cost-effective but require more setup and maintenance compared to commercial cooling mats.
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When choosing a cooling mat, consider your pet's habits and preferences. Some pets may prefer lying on cooler surfaces naturally, while others might need encouragement to use a mat. Additionally, ensure the mat is durable enough to withstand any chewing or scratching, especially if left unattended.
I spent all day making sure my spaniel was cool - ice cubes in his water, frozen carrots, a fan on for him the works! My jack Russell on the other hand spent yesterday cooking herself like a rotisserie chicken and refused to come in the house.
I had to yell my dog inside because she was sunbathing in the garden. I couldn't go and get her because the patio was too hot for my bare feet. When she eventually came inside she saw me get an ice lolly from the freezer and sat by it for 10 minutes before I got her something. She has no sense of cause and effect. The two cool pads, the two soaking wet hand towels, the multiple bowls of water and her own fan clearly weren't as interesting as burning to a crisp
My jack did the same thing - I had to actually go out and retrieve him from the hot plate patio he was lying on. He looked gaunt and dying in the face but absolutely refused to come in. And then begged to go out once I rescued him!
Omg my JR couldn’t get enough of the sun yesterday, I felt bad calling her in from the garden but she seemed to love it out there. I was so worried for her lol
This made me laugh. My JR does the same. She’s absolutely indestructible - just cracks on with her day
I put ours on my bed and slept on top of it - was great and kept me cool before falling asleep - slept better than normal! Put it behind your back and shoulders - thank me later
Everyone I know who has one of these for their dog (myself included) has ended up using it on themselves because the dog was completely disinterested. Good purchase either way.
I need one for the same reasons that you have one!
Ddn't know which one to get as the ones I've seen on Amazon don't sound like they retain the coolness very long or have a plastic finish. What one do you recommend and do you put it in the freezer?
My long haired cat just refused to come in the house where it was a good 15 degrees cooler than outside. He preferred to sit outside (in the shade, so I’ll give him that) in 38 degree heat.
I even went out, picked him up and carried him into the house just in case he just didn’t feel like moving. 10 mins later, he was sat outside again 🤷♂️
Yeah my cat was the same, brought her in and she just found a patch of sunlight (which I was unable to block out) and lay sprawled in that.
I also bought a big dog bowl and filled it with water for her figuring at least I don’t have to worry about her not drinking and also any other passing animals can take advantage of it too
A lot of cats just love the heat. My cat chose to spend the 2 hottest days of the year in the hottest room in the house (attic 42 degrees) when our kitchen was around 27 degrees.
Cats have a higher body temperature than we do. They love the heat
Just come across one of these in real life.

Lying on it genuinely feels nice and cold.
How on earth does it work?
I've got one at home. There's no active or chemical heat transfer in them. They are a heat sink.
Think of the new macbook, no fans just metal. The pet pad is filled with a gel like fluid, the heat from the dogs body is absorbed in the mat beneath him and passed to the the cooler gel in the mat that he is not sitting on. As long as the air around the mat is cooler than the dog the mat will cool the dog. Heat moves from hot things to cold things.
if the air is warmer than the dog and the mat starts off cooler, it will eventually heat up and the dog will only stay on it for comfort not for cooling.
Dogs will dig a hole in dirt and lay in it to get cool. When the dirt warms up they'll dig down a little more.
From the patent application:
It's apparently a gel that absorbs heat when the animal is on it and releases it to the air when the animal leaves.
This only works when the ambient temperature is significantly below the temperature of the animal.
While the gel makes it soft and comfortable, nearly anything will do this. A concrete driveway will also feel cool if it's in the shade and the ambient temperature is below body temperature. So does the "cool side" of your pillow.
> This only works when the ambient temperature is significantly below the temperature of the animal.
Then why would you need a cooling pad? Cooling pads are most needed when it's hot. You don't need a cooling pad for your pets if it's 70 degrees. You need them when it's 90 degrees and need them even more if it's 100 degrees.
My pets like to spread out on the non-carpeted floor. As this place is built on a cement pad, that stays cooler than the ambient temperature.
Agreed, I think there's a little more to this. First, it's basically an efficient thermal interface between the ground and the pet and the ground is almost always cooler than ambient temperature (except things like asphalt). Second, it effectively increases the overall surface area of the pet because the heat the gets absorbed where the pet is touching can be released anywhere else on the mat.
It's basically thermal paste for a dog/ground instead of CPU/heatsink.
If you want to save a little cash and basically MAKE one of these, but even more effective... get one of those stupid Thawing Plates. Big aluminum plate with some fins on the bottom. It'll absorb heat quickly, and dump heat quickly too. But maybe don't put it in the sun, bad things will happen.
Another example - a swimming pool. Water is a good material for absorbing heat. It’s just a heat sink that is less hot that daytime high temperatures and needs no electricity to cool it down.
I work in pet supply sales, and I will say - the cooling mats actually are pretty slick. (I've never seen OP's linked product, but I've sold 4 other manufacturers gel cooling mat in the past)
Dogs gotta get off every couple hours for 15-20 min, or 5ish min if you throw it in the fridge.
Biggest thing is DO NOT PUT IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT.
None of the manufacturers tell you this, one even says "great for a sunny patio", but every single one of these mats I've seen hardens in a few weeks and stops working. I burned my first one in 2 weeks by putting it in my front bay window, my current one is on year 5 without issue.
I just looked it up. They're filled with gel that absorbs heat and when it's unable to absorb more and becomes warm, the dog will leave and that heat will disperse into the air or floor below it and it'll be able to "cool" again. It's probably similar to a refreezable ice pack in that it feels cool even without being frozen, until it's against your skin for a while.
This likely works in one of two ways: 1) water is being adsorbed/ desorbed from some powdered material (likely silica) or 2) there is a phase change material that under goes a continuous phase change below ambient temperatures.
The second option is used in fast cooling baby milk bottles (see here as well).
The first option I think is more likely with this pad product though. The pad would contain water silica gel mix and this would act like the sweat on your body: your body heat/ weight would cause the liquid water to desorb from the gel which takes heat away from you.
It’s a dog product. They’re not known for full-body sweating like humans.
It wouldn't work on a hot day in bright sunlight. If the ambient temperature of the mat is colder than body temperature, then the mat absorbs your heat which makes it feel cool. Couches do the same thing, except that they don't have high thermal conductivity (rate of heat transfer) and specific heat (amount of heat that can be absorbed). The mat has a gel with high specific heat, and a casing with high thermal conductivity.
Where did you find this? I have a Siberian husky melting in the California heat and I can’t find a cooling Mat To save my life.
So this isn’t the exact mat in the picture, but this is the one I got for my pup and he loves it and uses all the time! It’s also lasted over 2 years so far, so definitely worth it.
Lovely thank you kind stranger!
PetCo has them!
We found ours at a Marshall's, but you can probably buy it online too! It's an American Kennel Club cooling mat
Curious how much was yours from Marshalls? I wasn't sure if it was better to search through my local store or just order via Amazon. If the price difference is minimal I might just go for the conviencce of direct ship from Amazon.
Do these really work
Yes, and it's nice when the mat is colorful (better for cats)
That’s a snuffling mat, not cooling. You hide treats under the flaps and they have to sniff them out.
Yes it does! It just can't be left in the sun for long periods of time, but it stays cool almost all day. it's good for dogs who like to lay outside in the summer like Reilly lol
oh man it always breaks me how pure and grateful dogs are for the smallest things
Sweet baby.
We use ceramic tiles from Home Depot! They sell them individually and come in various sizes. We’ll put the tiles in the freezer for a few mins during the especially hot seasons, but generally they’ll stay cool!
We freeze large liters of water. Dump the soda abs freeze the water. They will lay on or next to them. The perspiration off the water bottle they will also lick. We have four and half way through the day my kids swap them out.
Same here, frozen 2L bottle, stayed cold all day if not placed in direct sunlight. We actually leave it year round now (not frozen) because he likes sitting next to it.
how long do they stay cool? We live in SoCal, so we expect our summer to be brutal
We, too, use a ceramic tile from Home Depot (we're also in SoCal); it works wonders and our Bonnie loves it. It'll stay cool all summer long as long as it's not in direct sunlight. Just keep it in a cool, shaded area.
They stay cool indefinitely, a single rabbit isn't enough to warm it very much. I have one in smooth marble and one in slightly textured granite.
Same, we will take cool packs out if the freezer and leave them on top of a few tiles in the morning so they are super cold for the midday heat
We also use ceramic tiles from the Hardware store… we also keep a few large juice containers (Langer’s are nice because they are flat on the sides) and freeze them full of water for really really hot days. The buns usually curl up close to them in the shade on the worst days.
I use the Scratch and Newton freeze pods (for the two days England has sun)!
These are pretty great. But my bunnies don't seem to understand that lying on the pod will keep them cool.
Looks like you got lots of good advice so I just wanted to say your bun is so cute!
(We also used tiles and alternated cold ones if needed.)
I bought them during the heatwave (2020?) I also thought I'd never need heat pods because they live in a heated, converted garage but then we had a power outage for a few days and I felt so bad that they were cold little buns!
Anyone have any good tips for keeping my little guy cool and comfy? We’re in the middle of a heatwave and he looks fed up but I don’t know what to do for him other than the obvious (shade, water, fans) Thought about getting a cool mat but not sure what they put inside of them to hold the temp and I don’t want to leave him unattended with something he can bite through that’s full of murderery chemical goo. TIA x
(Ft pictures of his best shark impression)
I have a clean plastic spray bottle used only for the fuzzies so I can give them a spray down without them freaking out like some do when they get properly wet.
Had a big chunky hob that really felt the heat and would also freak out if anything wet got in his fur, and go roll in the litter tray (poop in his fur was apparently okay?). But spray him directly in the face and he not only had no problem with it but absolutely loved it!
lol! Thats like the most ferret thing I’ve ever heard. “Ah! Don’t get me wet damnit! Now I gotta dry off by any means necessary even if it means getting stinky poop all over me” 😂 I have a giant chunky boy who freaks out when he gets wet too. Or if I put a tasty treat on his tummy that he doesn’t realize is so tasty. He starts freaking out and running around like he just got bit in the butt by a turtle.
If it makes sense, it's not a ferret! 😂
When they’re in the cage I put frozen water bottles near the hammocks. Blankets over windows to block sun.
Wow, that is a great idea. I can believe I didn’t think of that. I have ice cube trays dedicated for the ferrets water fountain
Best answer imo
There are also cooling mats that you can buy. They are kind of like the blue gel ice packs that you can use for sore muscles, but with a more comfortable cover. Instead of putting them in the freezer like an ice pack, you just leave them out in the cage under their blankets, and they naturally stay a bit cooler than other surfaces. They're usually kind of overpriced, but the dollar stores near me have a decent version for cheap. As long as they are durable enough that pets can't chew through them, you should be good.
If they are free-roaming, you may not need a solution. Mine stopped using heating pads in the winter and cooling pads in the summer once they had free run of the house. I didn't realize how many tiny temperature zones my house contained, but they know exactly which spots to use to regulate their temperature, lucky punks!
Cooling mat, ice cubes in water dish. Mist maker.
I heard this really cool tip that I have yet to try!
If you get some frozen water bottles and put them ontop of the cage (wrapped so water doesn't drip off), and then drape a blanket over the cage, and direct a fan upwards, it's supposed to circulate cold air and keep them cool!
Again, haven't tried it yet! Might be a load of faff, but seems interesting!
We invested in a portable ac unit, it's been a life saver in this heatwave! We also don't open the window to the ferret room during the day (hot air, flies etc), but open it of a night.
I take a towel, soak the middle with some water n throw it in the freezer Works best if you got 2 so you can switch out
sorry i’ve been on a posting spree BUT he hates every sort of bed or anything however… this new cooling mat he can’t get enough of! he even splooted on it (berners sign of approval)! its a non toxic gel that cools instantly and dosent need to be frozen. i was a little suspicious but i put my feet on it and it felt like a cooler lol ill link it if anyone is interested! just wish it was a little bigger.
My girl has two of these, with the covers, and she used to be on them all the time. Now that she has a big bed with cooling layer, she refuses to use her mats. Great product!
ooooo!!! where did you get that one?! we need an extra for downstairs i love that idea 😍
Furhaven, they sent the wrong one the first time. They sent one without the cooling gel. So, they sent the correct one and let me keep the first, I just had to buy a cover!
I’ve used this exact one for 6 years. Replaced it once. My Berner loves it. I keep it on top of his orthopedic bed.
Thanks for the rec. I’m going to get one with summer coming up
Hi what is the brand? I can’t see it from the pics? Thanks
Thanks!
Hi other than lots of water, a cooling mat or a towel with cold damp water on it is there any good ways to help cool down my boy?
Mine getting sprayed with water and he's got a fan on him. He could lie on the cold tiled floor but he's not that sharp
He could lie on the cold, hard floor, or hooman could spray and fan him.
Seems pretty sharp to me!
He could lie on the cold floor and get sprayed and fanned. He's in his warm bed
I’ve been giving our gal frozen Kongs/toys. Nice enrichment whilst cooling down.
Also here for the other tips though!
I make up a load of marmite (or whatever knock off yeast extract brand in the supermarket) mixed with water and freeze it in old yoghurt pots. Autumn loves them.
I do this as well. I have some silicone ice trays and a couple individual silicone popover cups. I mix water with a little yogurt and fill them with that a pieces of frozen fruit (strawberry, banana, mango, etc). She enjoys them.
Also just wet dog food mixed with water works well in an ice lolly mould.
I fan her. Like manually with a hand held fan. I am pretty much a lady’s maid to her
LOL same.
Making them damp one way or another is usually the best way. If you’re being nice about it, mopping them down with a damp cloth does the trick, but I’ve not been above turning the hose with a mist/shower setting on them before!
Other than that, just giving them a space they can lie down, out of the sun and as cool as possible with access to plenty of water, is usually enough.
My experience is that a greyhound at rest can usually deal with the heat pretty well; its activity in hot weather, or a space where they can’t escape the sun, that you need to watch out for.
Oh, also, a paddling pool! You can get a doggy paddling pool pretty cheap on Amazon. They might not love it initially, but you can play games bobbing for treats that will get them messing around in the water!
I’m looking into buying/making something for my Akita to sleep on during the summer months. She isn’t interested in cooling gel mats. She usually picks the small tile bathroom or couch. I’m thinking about making her a tile bed or investing in a water circulation cooling mat. Does anyone have recommendations for this hot dog?
Before getting central AC, my boy would sleep on the tile floor with his nose pointing directly at a fan.
I’ve tried beds blankets cooling pads my boy wants none of it. He sleeps on floor because it’s cold. So I put a fan on and he sleeps right next to it. Ps this baby is beautiful
Your Akita likes beds? Mine rips up all the ones we buy him.😂
my girl ate EVERYTHING we gave her til we put an elevated bed in her crate, she LOVES it. has a little border of cushion to rest her head so it’s not just a straight up cot
I could buy all the beds in the world. Mine will prefer a cool, hard floor to all of them. He climbs into bed with me when I go out of duty/protection. But as soon as he feels I’m good and safe he fucks off to the bare (non rugged) part of the floor. Never tried a mat. He seems happy enough.
Cute! Question - what is a cooling mat? I understand the purpose, but did you make it or buy it somewhere? It’s not something I’ve run into before - fortunately live in a place where I don’t have to worry about that, typically, but I’m curious to know in the event I move, or if there were unexpected power outages etc
I got it from amazon!
Do you need to freeze or something ?
Death Napping on the cooling mat.
Aww cute!
i love him on his cooling mat! 😍😭
(I promise he's happy, just less happy about being woken up from his nap by dad cooing at him lolol) We were honestly unsure about the effectiveness of the pressure activated cooling mats, especially with the thick coat! Grabbed a Green Pet XL one just to try, and Bear (8yr male) LOVES it. He's groaning less as he gets up from his corner here too (mat is much softer than tile at least lol). It seems to maybe help with his joint inflamation from curling up on his limbs. Of course, if you have a chewer, this mat def won't last, but for my lazy older guy this is perfection after a joint suppliment and tooth brushing ♡
4 different dogs of ours wouldn't use it, preferring the cold hard floor
my old man LOVED his.
Def seems to be best for the older pups! I can't imagine keeping a teething puppy off this thing 😭
We bought one for our old girl who always sleeps with her belly against the wall. She wouldn’t use it. Ended up giving it to my son for my granddaughter’s crib.
Gronk isn’t a fan of his. Not disappointed.
Does anyone have issues with their pyrs claws ripping the mat open? I've tried multiple brands. I hand file her nails to be smooth but no luck. I now put the mat in a pillowcase but it's not ideal for cooling purposes.
