What Redditors are Saying

Protecting Pets from Heatstroke

TL;DR

  • Never leave pets in cars.
  • Provide fresh water and shade.
  • Limit outdoor activity during peak heat.
  • Use cooling aids like damp towels or cooling pads.

Avoid Leaving Pets in Cars

One of the most critical points emphasized across discussions is to never leave pets in cars, as they can suffer from heatstroke within minutes [1:1][4:1]. Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly, posing a severe risk to pets. If you need to be somewhere without your pet, it's safer to leave them at home in a cool environment.

Hydration and Shade

Ensuring pets have access to fresh, cool water is essential for preventing heatstroke. It's recommended to refill their water bowl frequently and place it in a shaded area [3]. For caged animals, consider using chilled stones or slabs for them to lay on [3:1]. Additionally, keeping pets indoors during the hottest parts of the day (11 AM to 3 PM) can significantly reduce the risk of overheating [2:1].

Cooling Aids

Various cooling aids can help keep your pet comfortable in high temperatures. Dampen a towel or bandana with cold water and tie it around your pet's neck, or use cooling vests and collars [5]. Cooling pads are also effective and can be purchased from various retailers [5]. However, be cautious with damp towels, as they may act as insulation once they reach body temperature [5:2].

Limit Outdoor Activity

Restricting outdoor activities to dawn and dusk can prevent heat exposure during the hottest times of the day [5]. Encourage your pet to rest on cold tiles or in shady areas and avoid walking them on hot surfaces like cement or concrete [5]. Avoid intense exercise or running around, and provide ample water during any outdoor play [5].

Additional Tips

Some additional tips include avoiding salty treats during hot weather, as dogs don't sweat like humans and can become dehydrated more easily [5:2]. Frozen treats like butchers bones can serve as a cooling snack for dogs [5:7]. Lastly, using suncream on pets when temperatures exceed 25°C can protect them from sunburn [5].

Officials from the Beaver County Humane Society are reminding residents to protect their pets from high temperatures after a dog recently suffered from heatstroke in Hopewell Township.

According to the Humane Society, members of the Hopewell Township Police Department rescued a 6-month-old Doberman puppy that was locked inside a vehicle on June 11. The puppy, named Atlas, required emergency medical treatment for heat-related stress. While stabilized, he is still recovering in the care of the BCHS staff.

“We love summer as much as our pets, but we have a responsibility to protect them from unsafe conditions,” said Alison Yazer, BCHS executive director. “Animals left in hot temperatures, especially enclosed spaces like cars, can develop heatstroke in as little as 15 minutes. Unfortunately, many pets don’t survive it, even with veterinary intervention.”

BCHS Police Officer Wendi Stafford said Atlas was left in a locked car for nearly 30 minutes before officers rescued him. When he arrived at the humane society, he was dangerously dehydrated, weak, and trembling.

“The best way to protect your pets from heatstroke or other heat-related illness is prevention,” Stafford said. “When it’s too hot for you, it’s even hotter for your pet.”

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle. While it is not illegal to leave a pet in a hot vehicle, police officers and animal control have the right to forcibly remove pets from cars if they have a good-faith reason to believe the animal will be harmed. This can also be used to establish a case of animal cruelty, neglect or abandonment, resulting in jail time and fines.

Your Email Members of the Beaver County Humane Society gave the following advice to keep pets safe during the summer:

Keep your pets hydrated - Hot temperatures and humidity can quickly dehydrate pets. To keep them hydrated, give them plenty of fresh, clean, and cool water. Limit time outside - In extreme temperatures, extended time in hot weather is dangerous even for animals that typically live outside. Ensure pets can access relief from hot temperatures by providing shelter or shaded spaces. Be wary of hot asphalt - Even in pleasant temperatures, pavement may be as much as 40 to 60 degrees hotter, which can burn paws. Avoid walking or going outside with your pets during the day's heat. Know the signs of overheating in pets - Excessive panting, difficulty breathing, drooling, and an increased heart rate are symptoms of overheating, but collapse, seizures, and bloody diarrhea or vomiting are signs your pet may be experiencing a heat-related medical emergency. Check on strays - If you see an animal left outside, locked in a hot car (without a running engine or open windows), or in distress, contact your local police department immediately. Time is of the essence for pets locked in hot cars, so if you feel safe enough, attempt to contact the vehicle owner while waiting for law enforcement to arrive. Never break into a vehicle, even to save a pet. Anyone interested in supporting Atlas’s healing journey can donate on the BCHS website or call 724-775-5801, ext. 142, for more information.

Symptoms like excessive salivation and increased respiration rate

Even symptoms like rapid breathing and attempts to cool down their body temperature by seeking shade or cooler areas 🎐

To manage heat stress it is essential to control the temperature in the animal's surroundings provide adequate amounts of cool water at regular intervals and take other measures to help lower the animal's body temperature 🌡️

How to keep your pet cool this summer.

Posted by MrnMrsPetOfficial · in r/Pets · 5 months ago

Summer in India is brutally hot, and just like us, animals can feel the heat, too. But the main part is that they can't sweat like us, so they quickly overheat. Therefore, heatstroke poses a significant risk to animals.

But with some tips and tricks, we can control them with high heat and extreme temperature.

Keep them hydrated.

In the heat, dehydration occurs very quickly. Fill their bowl with water every 20 minutes. Also, make sure the bowl is placed in a cold place, not in sunshine. Put small ice cubes to keep the water colder for a longer time. Make sure cubes aren't too big for small pets. Some pets like licking ice cubes on their own.

If you're going for a walk or drive, then make sure to take a water bottle or bowl with you for your pets, as they get very easily dehydrated.

Avoid walking during extreme heat.

Mostly, try to avoid walking with your pet in high heat. It's too hot for their paws. It's a good rule: “If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws also.”

Try to walk early in the morning or late in the evening. When it's lower temperature and not too much heat for their paws.

Keep walks short. Even active dogs need to take it easy when it's too hot. Start to observe their signs, like panting, drooling, etc.

Never leave pets in a parked vehicle.

This is one of the major mistakes that many owners make. It's not safe for pets. The reason behind this is cars heat up in minutes. Even when windows are cracked open still, it's not safe. If you're in a hurry, then it's better to leave your pet at home.

Provide air conditions, a cooling map, and damp towels.

When you are roaming around and it's too hot for your pet, then try to sit under a tree or give them an umbrella because it works better than dog houses. In the house, keep shades on dog houses to keep them calm or allow cool places to access.

Air conditioning is a good option, but it is not necessary. You can turn on the cooler or fan for their temperature to bring it down.

Avoid ice cube baths or soaking your pet in chilled water. It causes harm because of sudden temperature changes, so try to maintain good airflow.

Summer grooming

Brushing their teeth is a good option to circulate air to their throat. But be careful…don't shave them completely.

Many breeders have both coats for colds and heat. It's very useful for heat to bring down the temperature or, in winter, to give them a warm temperature.

Keep playtime safe.

Keep their playtime very safe and low energy. Try to play with puzzles, or many dogs love to play with frozen things or ice to bring some cold.

Watch over signs.

Overheating can cause many diseases in pets, like red gums, vomiting, restlessness, collapse, etc.

Does your dog also have these symptoms?

Then, go fast to the veterinary doctor for their health checkup. Also, you can give them rest at a cool temperature. These are the signs of heatstroke.

Conclusion

Overheating doesn't have to be a misery for your pet. With a little care and planning, you can save your pet and have fun and enjoyable moments with it.

Try to keep them in cold places, take care of their hydration, and, most importantly, prioritize your pet's comfort zone.

All great tips! Can I add for caged animals, rats specifically, but some of this can work for other pets. you can cool a stone or slab in the refrigerator or freezer and place in the cage for them to lay on. Run a fan but not directly facing the cage. An oscillating one facing away from the cage is what I use. Keep the room they’re in darker-blackout curtains can help. You can feed them frozen peas and corn, or let them go pea fishing or play in a shallow dish of water. You can make their water bottles half ice. Fill bottle halfway (done put lid on) and freeze. Then add fresh water. The ice will be at the top of the bottle and melt to make the water colder. If your house gets REALLY hot move their cage to the basement. The dampness isn’t great for them but it won’t be horrible for a few days. A dehumidifier can help. If anyone else has some tips for other caged pets please share!

Leaving dogs in car is a big No-No. If you need to be somewhere else, just leave them at home with the fan on or if kaya naman, with ac on. Just do some precautionary measures to protect them and your things around especially yung mga de-kuryente.

Good thing my husband is wfh so they’re with him sa room with the ac on.

do not walk dogs during daylight. Dawn and Dusk only.

Dampen a teatowel, bandana etc. with cold water and tie it around their neck. (you can buy cooling vests and collars, but this is my preference)

Cooling pads, i got mine for £10 out of B&M but im sure you can get them elsewhere.

If your pet will allow it, pools and water play.

No intense exercise or running around, provide with water.

Encourage laying on cold tiles or in damp shady areas.

Suncream is very important if its above 25 celsius.

Do not let them walk on cement, concrete etc. It will burn their paws and the places that touch the ground when sitting/ laying, eg. elbows, thighs, chin etc.

add to this as you need.

For humans damp towels aren't recommended, as once they reach body temperature or begin to dry out they can end up acting as insulation. I'd imagine this applies equally to puppers. Other than that some good advice there.

Have reasonably cool water to pet them down with. Even if your dog is a breed that doesn't like water they'll still appreciate this and it will cool them down as it evaporates, as dogs don't sweat the same as we do. This also helps if you have a pet Prince Andrew.

Again, because dogs don't sweat, avoid salty treats during hot weather. During hot weather we use up salts as part of the sweating process, but dogs don't and excess salt in their food can result in dehydration instead.

🐕HEATSTROKE IN DOGS🐕

We've been banging on about this for years! HEATSTROKE is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY! Fortunately, now more and more professionals are communicating the same message!

Whilst the need for rapid cooling with COLD water (1-15°C) has been recognised for decades in equestrian and human medicine, the dog world has lagged behind, and very poor information still circulates. e.g. "cool the paws", "cover with wet towels", "avoid cold water as it will cause shock"

THE KEY MESSAGES ARE............

💦"WET THEN VET"💦

💦"COLD WATER IMMERSION" (1-15°C)💦 (If you can't immerse, keep pouring ANYTHING COLD over the dog - hose, soft drinks, milk, etc)

💦Dogs die of heatstroke because they were NOT COOLED QUICKLY ENOUGH, NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE COOLED!

♨️RISK FACTORS FOR HEATSTROKE IN HOT WEATHER♨️

♨️Large dogs ♨️DOUBLE-COATED breeds ♨️Brachycephalic breeds ♨️June, July, August (UK) ♨️Exercise, being outdoors, left in cars

EDIT: - If a dog is PANTING, it's struggling to control its body TEMPERATURE! 💦HOSE IT TO COOL IT DOWN!💦

❤️PLEASE SHARE - Spread accurate information; potentially save a dogs life!❤️

Can you point me to what part of the research (link that you provided) advises “rapid cooling”?

A hyperthermic sighthound is at severe risk of vasoconstriction because of their low body fat. If you suspect that your dog is suffering heatstroke (including, but not limited to, drooling, excessive panting, lethargic or woozy behaviour, change in gum colour, very swollen tongue) please get them to a veterinary professional as soon as possible.

11 upvotes on reddit
perkiezombie · 3 months ago

Please don’t rush your dog to the vet if it’s just panting.

Panting is completely normal for dogs and is their main way of cooling themselves. It does NOT mean it’s struggling. Heavy or excessive loud panting with other signs is an issue, not panting itself.

20 upvotes on reddit
clarkelaura · OP · 3 months ago

As with most indicators in dogs, context is everything. If you dog has spent more than a couple of minutes doing vigorous activity in 25°C and after several minutes is still panting, then consider immersing in water and calling a vet

Greyhounds, particularly racing ones, have more difficulty self regulating heat than other a lot of other sighthounds. To do some myth busting here, the modern greyhound was actually bred in England from a stock of Czech hunting hounds, not in ancient Egypt. The result is they no longer have the adaptations for extreme heat that their cousins like galgos, afghans, and salukis have.

DVM here, I live in Florida now but spent my first decade as a vet in Indiana. I’ve experienced heatstroke so many times as a treating clinician. Just last week a dog arrived with a rectal temp of 111. Owners claimed she had been outside for 30 minutes. And that is believable, as many cases of reported heatstroke are 20-30 min outside. Many happen in spring or early summer, before pets have acclimated to the weather change.

Things to consider- studies absolutely support cooling at home decreases mortality rates. I’ll post links at the end. Both the degree of temperature increase AND duration impact the outcome. So the sooner cooler methods are used, the better.

Dogs that don’t die immediately at intake (either code or euthanasia is performed) the vast majority enter into DIC and/or have permanent organ damage (generally GI tract is the first to see clinical signs as the tissue dies and sloughs - both direct heat damage and from hypovolemic shock damage).

Hypoglycemia is a secondary common condition that requires IV supplementation- but it has to be done slowly and accurately. Often these dogs need plasma transfusions, several days in ICU, and it’s fairly common for these bills to reach 8-10k and even with the most aggressive treatment, euthanize has been selected more than not due to poor prognosis or lasting effects.

All that to say - it is so much better to prevent this from happening over treating it. The dogs are absolutely suffering, and these cases stick with me.

Keep your dogs inside during this heat!!!!

Posted by Affectionate_Past121 · in r/longbeach · 1 month ago

It's shocking to see how many people have their dogs out in the middle of the day when the dogs are clearly struggling. Not only is the sidewalk too hot for their paws, but dogs can't regulate their body temperature like we can.

Signs of Heat Stroke in dogs: Excessive panting: While panting is normal for dogs, excessive or rapid panting can be a sign of overheating. Bright red or purple gums: Healthy gums should be a pale pink color. Discoloration can indicate heat stroke. Drooling: Excessive drooling can be a sign of overheating and distress. Vomiting and diarrhea: These can occur as a result of the overheating and damage to the GI tract. Lethargy and weakness: Dogs may become weak, unsteady, or collapse. Disorientation and confusion: Dogs may appear confused, disoriented, or unresponsive. Seizures or coma: In severe cases, dogs may experience seizures or become unconscious.

What to do if you suspect heat stroke: Move to a cooler area: Get the dog out of the heat and into a shaded or air-conditioned space. Cool the dog down: Use cool (not ice-cold) water: Spray or pour cool water over the dog's body, focusing on the head, neck, and belly. Apply wet towels: Place cool, wet towels on the dog's body, especially in the armpits and groin area. Do not use ice packs: Ice packs can constrict blood vessels and hinder cooling. Offer water: If the dog is alert and able to drink, offer small amounts of cool water. Seek veterinary care immediately: Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires prompt veterinary attention.

Prevention is key: Limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day: Exercise your dog in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Provide shade and fresh water: Ensure your dog always has access to cool water and a shaded area, especially when outdoors. Never leave your dog in a parked car: Even with the windows cracked, a car can heat up rapidly and become dangerous. Be cautious with brachycephalic breeds: Dogs with short snouts (like Bulldogs and Pugs) are more susceptible to heat stroke.

How to prevent pets from overheating during this heat wave (without a/c)?

Posted by hersolitaryseason · in r/VictoriaBC · 2 years ago

Basically the title. Today's temps are going to reach 33 degrees (will "feel like" 39, according to the Weather Network). I live in a really small place that heats up pretty quickly. I've covered my skylight with heat reflecting fabric (basically car window covers), closed my curtains and windows, have the fans going.

I have two elderly cats and they're quite fluffy, so I worry about their ability to thermoregulate. Yesterday we spent most of the day outside because the breeze provided more respite than the shady house did. I put cold damp towels on them to cool them down occasionally. Today I'm thinking of shaving their tummies to help with air flow (I would groom them more but I don't want to stress them out when they're already stressed from the heat).

I don't know of cooling centres where I can bring my cats and I don't have a car so I can't just put them in there and blast the a/c... I'm running out of ideas!

Any other tips to keep pets cool during this heat or least prevent them from overheating and getting sick?

Edit: Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions! Minus the person who said to put my cats in the fridge.

Laying cool damp towels over them helps, it can also help to wipe them down with a cool damp towel so their fur gets wet and it’ll act the same as our sweat if they’re in front of a fan (that’s what I’ve been doing for my old boy). Make sure there’s lots of water for them and keep a close eye on them! You can look up signs of overheating in cats online but essentially any change in behaviour/demeanour should be noticed and steps taken to help cool them down. Putting a barely damp towel in the freezer for like 20 minutes and laying that out to see if they want to lay down on that can also help :)

You should have windows open at night, and place a fan by the window, pointed inward, to draw cool air in. By about 7:30am, you should close your windows and seal things up to try to trap the cool air in, and also do like you've done and block out the sun as much as possible.

If you can't afford A/C or your building doesn't allow it, one thing you can try is getting a clothes drying rack, then place a towel over it, and then put ice cubes from the freezer on top of the towel, then aim a fan at that whole mess. It's a kind of improvised A/C. Don't expect it to work miracles, obviously, but I have found it does help.

There are also cooling mats out there for pets, but I haven't used these and can't speak to their efficacy.

I second the swamp cooler idea, or any way to increase the amount of active evaporation happening in or on the outside of your home (the latter is harder to do in an apartment/condo, obviously). We made it through the heat dome in part by blowing fans across baking pans of ice water and spraying down our roof and walls with water every hour, and setting up a human misting system in the back yard.

Here’s a great video illustrating the effects of using water evaporation for cooling purposes; obviously your cats won’t appreciate being hosed down but even just the fan plus water or water & ice will make a huge difference over the fan alone.

Also, if you feel like walking your dog in the middle of the day, take your shoes off and walk around barefeet on the pavement for 10 minutes first.

If you still have feet, then decide if it's ok to walk the dog.

I think my dog likes sunbathing (I just found this out today). Earlier I was sitting in the shade on my deck, and I tried getting my dog (with horrible recall haha) to come sit in the shade with me. He didn’t budge, but continued laying in the sun. Then a couple times today, he wanted to go out on the deck and as soon as I let him out he just plopped down on the deck for a few minutes. I let him in as soon as he came to the door. This happened a couple times. It was cute. He’s acting like a cat it seems (he makes a better cat than the actual cat).

how to protect pets from heatstroke

Key Considerations for Protecting Pets from Heatstroke:

  1. Hydration: Always provide fresh, cool water for your pets. Ensure they have access to water at all times, especially during hot weather.

  2. Shade and Shelter: Create shaded areas in your yard or provide a cool indoor space where pets can escape the heat. Avoid leaving pets in direct sunlight for extended periods.

  3. Limit Exercise: Reduce the intensity and duration of outdoor activities during peak heat hours (usually between 10 AM and 4 PM). Opt for early morning or late evening walks.

  4. Cooling Products: Consider using pet cooling mats, vests, or bandanas that can help lower their body temperature. You can also wet their fur with cool (not cold) water.

  5. Signs of Heatstroke: Be aware of symptoms such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing. If you notice these signs, move your pet to a cooler area and contact a veterinarian immediately.

  6. Never Leave Pets in Cars: Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke. Always take your pets with you or leave them at home during hot weather.

Recommendation: Regularly monitor the temperature and humidity levels, and adjust your pet's outdoor activities accordingly. If you live in a particularly hot climate, consider investing in air conditioning or fans to keep your home comfortable for your pets.
