TL;DR
Effectiveness of Cooling Pads
Cooling pads can indeed help reduce the temperatures of gaming laptops, especially those with bottom intake vents. Users have reported temperature drops ranging from 5°C to over 20°C depending on the model and setup [1:6]
[4:1]
[5:2]. The effectiveness often depends on the design of the cooling pad, with models featuring foam seals generally providing better results
[5:1].
Recommended Models
Several cooling pad models stand out in user recommendations:
Considerations for Usage
While cooling pads are beneficial, they should be used thoughtfully to avoid potential issues such as dust build-up. Ensuring a clean surface and regular maintenance can mitigate these risks [5:7]. Additionally, elevating the laptop can improve airflow, which might be sufficient for minor overheating issues
[4:2].
Budget-Friendly Options
For those on a budget, there are affordable cooling pads that still offer decent performance. A simple elevation or a basic cooling pad can provide some relief from high temperatures [2:2]
[5:4]. However, investing in a higher-end model like the IETS or Llano can be worthwhile if your laptop frequently experiences thermal throttling
[5:3].
Additional Tips
Besides using cooling pads, other methods such as undervolting can also help manage laptop temperatures effectively [4:10]. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the laptop's internal fans can further enhance cooling efficiency
[5:9].
I ordered this cooling pad for my 2070 and i7 10750h laptop, as it tends to run hot, cpu in upper 90s.
Do you think these actually cool down the laptop with the fans, or is the biggest difference with these that the laptop gets more air, cause it's lifted up and not on the mousepad / desk?
Yes that’s true.
Having said that, I’ve found a combination of settings with mine where both the cooler and laptop fans are running at a constant speed of about half their maximum RPM, a bit less than half on the cooler and a bit more than half on the laptop.
That keeps temperatures significantly lower than than the laptop fans on their own in automatic mode, and is much quieter than the laptop fans on their own at full blast (quiet enough that you don’t notice when playing on a TV).
The good ones do…
AND IT’S GLORIOUS!!!

My gpu temperature dropped 40F degrees, making my poor old 2080 laptop play Helldivers 2 at 4k.
Prior, it was reaching 203 degrees
Sounds like a gd harrier jet at full 2600 RPMS… but you can dial it down. It is the best fan i have ever used in 20 years of using them
Damn, that's a pricey cooling pad and I'm broke af 💔
wondering how that one compares to this IETS one for like $50 less https://www.amazon.com/IETS-Supercharged-Continuously-13-19inch-Filtration/dp/B0DJ6N9YTL
llano v12 is $96 USD. V13 $103 USD.
The flydigi bs2 pro - better? version (at least in terms of rpm and being $10 more expensive, though unsure why they call both models bs2) is on gadgethyper for $100. Or [$90 for the less rpm/fan size BS2] (/https://gadgethyper.com/products/flydigi-bs2-laptop-cooling-pad)
This one could be nice too :
A cooling pad works with or without this. I drop 10 or so degrees f
Lifting up the laptop from your desk is really good. Can be up to 5-10 degrees depending on your laptop. Laptop coolers are really good too most of the good ones can knock off about 10-20 degrees. Problem is yours is not a good one. As others mentioned you want a foam seal to seal your laptop inside the cooler. I would check out llano v12/v13 laptop cooling pads they are not cheap but mine easily knocks off 20 degrees I have a 3070 mobile at 130w at max load I run about 55 degrees cpu and 50 degrees gpu on 1000rpm which is not that loud if your wearing headphones.
I got the Llano V12. Great accesory, I maintain mine @ 400rpm and my games maintain 65c.
The flydigi bs2 pro - better? version (at least in terms of rpm and being $10 more expensive, though unsure why they call both models bs2) is on gadgethyper for $100. Or [$90 for the less rpm BS2] (/https://gadgethyper.com/products/flydigi-bs2-laptop-cooling-pad)
couldn't find bs1 easily, but one guy's review on its performance and noise sold me. We shall see if the Bs2 is better or worse or similar.
I have a IETS GT500 or 600 and to get decent cooling, it has to be louder than the laptop fans. I am hoping this BS2 solves most of my issues.
Yeah, but I'm almost certain it was just getting my laptop off the surface to get better airflow.
https://youtu.be/tXvKiy65pwg?si=VTr-cHX3H14fokWg
The video is from 2020, a lot older than I expected lol, but it essentially says getting the laptop some height above the fans makes a big difference, but shelling out high money for an expensive cooler isn't going to get huge benefits
The sealed chamber types with the foam seal do significantly cool down the laptop, but they tend to be more expensive.
Most laptop cooling pads don't do better than a laptop stand that gets elevation off your desk/playing surface, but that's usually enough to solve most cooling issues people have.
Jarrods Tech did a pretty good video a year or two ago looking at a bunch of different cooling pads and assessing their performance.
I use a fairly inexpensive Targus active cooler, since I primarily game with my laptop on a soft surface that prevents airflow
I’ve seen a bunch of cooling pads on Amazon but not sure if they actually work or just make noise.
I use an RTX 4060 laptop (Lenovo Legion) and during gaming it gets really warm — especially on the left palm rest and under the GPU side.
Does anyone here use a cooling pad that made a noticeable difference? Not expecting miracles, just better temps or comfort would be good.
Open to suggestions if you’ve tested any under $50. Bonus if it’s quiet and has USB passthrough.
Honestly? I thought they were a scam. But my laptop used to burn my lap, and now with a cheap pad from Amazon, it's actually comfortable again.
If you're tired of laptop overheating during gaming, it's a no-brainer under $40.
My cooling pad cools my table more than my laptop 😂
If portability matters, I’d suggest checking out the Klim Ultimate. It’s slim, lightweight, and easily fits in a backpack. For me, it was the best laptop cooling pad option when I was traveling for work in 2024. I expect by 2025 more brands will follow the same trend — thinner builds but with USB-C power instead of old USB-A. That would make them even more useful for modern laptops like the MacBook Pro or Razer Blade.
On my ASUS TUF A15, the pad barely helped. I think the internal thermal design matters more. Just my experience.
I used a cooling pad with my ASUS ROG Strix (RTX 3070) and saw a consistent 6–10°C drop in CPU temps.
For gaming laptops, especially ones with bottom intake vents, a laptop cooling pad makes a big difference.
The Cooler Master X3 has insane airflow but is louder, while the Havit pad is quieter and more budget-friendly.
TL;DR: If you're wondering “do cooling pads actually help laptops?” — yes, but pick the right one based on your thermal layout.
Llano V13
100% this.
My old 2080 laptop was reaching 218F while playing helldivers 2 at 4k… the poor old thing.
The llano 13 has it down to 160F while doing the same thing, at full rpms.
With an AC room This Become a beast in an AC room My CPU temps at 80s with AC and Llano V13 Settles at chilling 50s
Look for memo fl08. Same performance relative to the most expasive ones and u can save some money to buy him some chocolate too
Great response imo.
are there anyother options?
I've heard the zeb NC9200 is similar to the illano v12.
Upvoted for added thoughtfulness
Llano v12
IETS GT600 or Llano v12
IETS GT 600
Do cooling pads actually work ? At least on laptops with air intake vents on the bottom ?
How do laptops, specifically gaming laptops, benefit from using a cooling pad ? From what i've found, cooling pads seem to provide better airflow and cooler temperatures, does this improve performance ?
I've also read that cooling pads may damage your laptop because they blow dust into it as well as making your laptop's fans spin faster.
As for dust, if you place your cooling pad and your laptop on a clean surface free of dust, then there shouldn't be any problem right ? My only concern is with cooling pads making laptop's fans spin faster, is it true ? If so, does it really damage the fans in the long run ?
After considering everything, are cooling pads worth it ?
Thanks in advance for your reply !
If you want significal temp change i would lift the laptop as high as i can. I do have a cooling pad and I also lifted it up and I can tell you, lifting the laptop up provides better cooling than a cooling pad.
I literally forced myself to learn about tech things that I didn't know before I owned a gaming laptop. I was able to hit the sweet spot of my CPU (i5-8300h) and GPU (GTX 1050ti) after a few tries (more like a week of optimizing my Lenovo unit). I only installed the simplest softwares to my liking and I'm glad that they worked. Most people at school doesn't really know about optimizing stuff so I studied more hoping that I could offer some assistance to those who encountered some small and simple problems that can be solved through some troubleshoots. I tried to help some but I stopped since I encountered a BIOS problem about Dell laptops (the systems of Dell units doesn't accept any optimization that I enabled on it). I think that what I did to my laptop isn't applicable to everyone given that we have different units but I'll search for my past post soon. I am also thinking about repasting my CPU and GPU soon as well as buy a new wifi card to upgrade my laptop soon when she turns 2 years old (my baby literally haha). Don't forget to open your laptop every 6 months or so clean some of that dust within the fans! I'll just edit this with the link soon!
EDIT:
Found it! I forgot that I was discussing something with a certain guy on the forums. My name is Pholax and I hope that this link can help!
I used a cooling pad on an old laptop of mine for years. Completely safe. The fans should not be an issue unless you're using a cooling pad with industrial fans. As for efficacy, my laptop would overheat very quickly, with the cooling pad, it wouldn't. I'd only invest if you specifically have thermal problems, it won't really improve performance otherwise
How do u tell if it’s an industrial fan, I use DEEPCOOL N1 1X 180mm Fan, is this fine? Also what’s wrong with an industrial fan
You're fine. I don't think any laptop cooling pads actually come with industrial fans. A 180mm fan should be more than safe
For me it does not really do anything except for stopping my fans from going apeshit, but it also stops my balls from being burnt off.
So then it does exactly what it is supposed to.. by helping manage your computer’s thermals.
Ik this is old, but this is a lot more important than people think it is. heat can actually dcrease sperm count and prolonged heat exposure can fuck up your thighs.
For me it makes a difference, makes it run cooler. That's because the cooling system is bad to begin with and the cooling pad is decent with 5 fans that said not everyone will benifit
My laptop's temperatures never go beyond 60° Celsius after I optimized it about a year ago. My usual temps before was like 80°-90°+ under heavy load and I got scared about the heat that's why I studied for more than a month on how to take care of your laptop. My usual temps while under heavy load hovers around 55°-60° but with the cooling pad (Redragon IVY) it went down to 50°-55° cap. Casual usage at around 35°-45° and I live in the Philippines without any aircon... Don't forget to buy some external peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, or even a screen to preserve your laptop's hardware!
I have a high-end gaming laptop (ROG Strix Scar 16, RTX 4080) and I’m wondering if it’s worth buying a cooling pad.
Some people say cooling pads reduce temps by 5–10°C, especially during gaming or rendering, while others say they’re useless or even push more dust into the laptop and clog the vents over time.
So I’m genuinely confused.
Would love to hear some real experiences from fellow gamers or creators.
Thanks in advance!
A regular type of cooling pad generally will only reduce temps by around 5°C. One with a foam seal will make a significant difference OTOH. My case must be fairly extreme with my ThinkPad fans being obviously weak so an Ilano v12 can easily drop the temperature by >20°C while at low rpms like 700. I regret waiting a year before finally spending the $100 on it because it makes all the difference in the world trying to game in 4k
100% worth it, chances are you never have to repaste in 4-5 years of ownership. Ive owned 6 laptops and the last 3 never had to repaste as my temps were always well managed, less then 85c. High temps = faster thermal paste degradation. I use the iets gt 600 which filters and drops my temps by about 10-15c . To me, it's a must have. Its an inexpensive way to protect your investment. And yeah, get yourself an air duster and clean your pc time to time. You don't necessarily have to open it but its recommended. Personally, I never open mine. I opened my last omen 2070 from 2019 once in the 4-5 years owning it and probably around 3ish year mark and I did airdust it time to time without opening it. When I opened it, it was 99% clean. The 2 cooling pads i had for it during its life sealed the bottom chassis to the pad and both had filters. Im never opening another one of my pcs again that I use my cooling pad with, waste of time given how clean it was. Airdusting and the filter was enough to keep it clean
Coincido totalmente contigo
Yes, even the cheap ones will lower a few degrees. Obviously with IETS or Ilano you will have a much better result and have dust filters. High temperature = Less performance
Agree. Got a cheap one with two fans below a metal mesh that simply blow some air onto the chassis 5 years ago. The temps dropped like 2-3°C compared to simply having the laptop lifted off the table. My Llano V12 I got this year drops my temps by over 15°C, the 40°C claim only works for laptops with U-class CPUs, it's a little misleading because it really helps a lot
Got the IETS GT500 and it is great! The temps are 15 to 20 degrees cooler on i9 and 4090. The noise is higher but the temps are definitely much better, if stationary I am never gaming without it.
Yeah can't rate the iets500 highly enough and ive got like a 3 year old model so im sure they are better now. Actually allows me to game on my laptop and still have reasonable temps despite this heatwave. Funnily enough it almost beats my desktop.
There's always the upgraded model of the IETS600. Digital controls for the fan and larger fan for pushing more air pressure into the laptop intakes.
Plus that one has a dust filter for keeping the laptops fans clear longer
Depends on which cooling pad we are talking about. Cheap one with no foam seal? You might as well just use cheap laptop stand or book to elevate the back of your laptop to improve air flow. But if we are talking about something like IETS, LLano and Flydigi, they will absolutely cool down your laptop, in addition of filtering the dust from getting in your laptop. I personally had Flydigi BS1 and it managed to reduce my laptop temperature from thermal throttling to 85 - 90 C. Now I have Flydigi BS2 Pro and it managed to reduce the temp further to around 70 - 75 C (after repasted and cleaned).
If yes which one and why ? Are they really useful ?
I also use one simply because my laptop has terrible thermal performance in demanding tasks. Also note the size of the cooling pad with the size of your laptop because that CNA make a huge difference
Edit: I didn’t note major thermal drops but quite nice drops depending (anywhere from 2-5 degrees C depending)
Apologies but what does CNA stand for?
I meant to say can but my phone for whatever reason loves to auto correct it to Certified Vursing Assitant
Cooling pads are excellent: first, they allow your laptop to breath ( constantly getting fresh air especially if intake vents are at the bottom ) which in turn results in way cooler insides. Secondly it allows you to adjust the height of your laptop to be at the same level of your head preventing you from hurting your neck)
thanks
Yes, I use one from cooler master (about 20 bucks where I live). Temps go down about 3 to 5 degrees but mainly bought it to lift it up from the desk a bit. Highest difference in temps comes from the lifting rather than the fans.
I've always used one, and yes there are some small improvements; also get a cooling stand instead of just a pad, the additional airflow underside helps a lot (I use a Cooler Master Ergostand 3, I splurged a little).
I've never seen the kind of decreases that reviews tend to put out though, which probably explains why most people are skeptical. As another post points out you're more likely to see a 5C drop on average.
I don't. So far an undervolt has been enough to keep my CPU in an acceptable range and the GPU, being a max q, was fine from the start.
I have both one for the 18 area 51 and the other for the m16r1. Both are great. The v10 has higher fan speeds so if you want really good cooling go with the v10.
Does the V10 fit your 18 area 51? Was thinking of getting one for my 16 inch area 51. Also, does it interfere at all with the glass window intake? Does it seem to be working well on the area 51?
The glass window intake actually sits flush with the memory foam.
Barely I had to get the v13 but the v10 should fit perfectly for the 16 inch area 51
Higher fan speed doesn't always mean more air flow. V12 is superior
IETS GT600 or LLANO v13 if you don't want RGB or v12 if you want RGB
Oops! Do you have a link about these cooler models?
IETS GT600 RGB (you have to get the RGB model for this one as it has slightly faster fans)
I'm happy with https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DQKHWHCM
I have iets 500 with x15r1
Also buy sony inzone buds, they have good noise cancelation. XD
my bad, corrected.
Hoping someone here can help. My son owns the llano V12 Laptop Cooling Pad for his Alienware laptop. It works great. However, he's studying engineering and often needs to run CAD and other heavy duty programs while away from home, and the llano doesn't fit in his bag and just isn't practical for taking on the go. Does anyone have a suggestion for a more portable cooling pad? I understand that with a smaller, more portable size, the cooling won't be close to what the llano provides, but I'm hoping to surprise him with something that might work "well enough" away from home.
Not sponsored or an ad, just sharing my journey with cooling pads. Threw a lot of money at this laptop so I wanted to maximize the vibes and cooling performance. I have bought like 6 or 7 coolers of varying sizes/types. The sealed coolers are obviously the best but lack portability + Very loud in my experience. I think they are great for at home use, but anywhere else, it is just a hastle for me. Most portable fan coolers I have tried, don't really move needle on cooling in my experience. If you want maximum cooling, while being super portable. Then try the zebay coolers one. I don't know how many he has left, but its a turkish guy on etsy who had a gaming laptop and just made these coolers for himself and some buddies. Its got RGB with all kinds of settings. It has a speaker in it (not good speakers, but has em lol). The biggest factor: Has 4, high efficiency 6200 rpm fans, which are placed exactly where they should be to maximize cooling on the Zephyrus. I would have to assume you could change or upgrade the fans too. You also get variable fan speeds, and its made out of metal. It is pretty expensive, but worth it if you already spent bands on your laptop 😂
Lmk if you have questions 🙂
>I wanted to maximize the vibes and cooling performance u/theoneandonlysauce
Nice! Am sure the RGB lighting drops the temperatures by another 5°-10°C for sure!
LLANO V10 for the G14 and V12 for the G16. The IETS is really the only other fan that does more than a few degrees of cooling for these laptops.
When the designer cares more about aesthetics than performance:
I'm not familiar with this brand, but even if the fans are super-duper strong, the vents appear to be working against them 🫣
those cutouts are probably blocking about half the static pressure of the fans lmao
That cooling pad is not really compatible for your zephryus. You should get one with more fan surface, like ilano v10 or v12, which essentially puts your laptop above 1 giant industrial grade fan
Laptop thermals are cooked. Fans are so f*cking loud. Tried elevating it, undervolting and the temps still spike.
Need a cooling pad that actually moves air where it matters, not one of those RGB gimmicky things where you are just paying for how it looks rather than what it does.
Ideally something that doesn’t rattle, whine, or melt under load.
TIA.
.... Why don't you re-paste it PTM is like $20 USD. Cooling pad isn't much better than a stand when the thermal material has gone bad
Okay I will give it a go ta
I used to use the IETS GT600, but the fan was noisy and rattling, even at 800 rpm.
Bought the Flydigi BS2, and running it at 1300 rom, and noise level is night and day compared to IETS
Flydigi BS2 Pro. Very quiet.
Awesome cheers
Well, good ones (GT600 or llano v10-12-13) will be with noise so if you are bothered with laptop fans you will be likely to be bothered by the cooling pad fans as well.
The next best thing that does it with air that is not gonna sound too much is either KLIM Everest or Klim turbofest
Thanks for this i really appreciate it :)
I recently bought a Dell G5 15 SE 5590 for gaming and was wondering what laptop cooling devices you all would suggest? I know that laptop is going to be hot so I'm trying to order a cooling mat or stand so I can alleviate this problem. It would be nice, but not required, to see if this can be used on my lap as well.
Thanks guys!
I'm looking to buy a cooling pad or mat as well. I just recently bought a Dell g7 7790.
You really don't want to use a gaming laptop on your lap. Ideally they're desktop replacements i.e. sit on a desk. At max load of over 80C they'll be way too uncomfortable to put on your lap anyway, nevermind how inadvisable it would be to possibly block the air intake/exhaust vents that way. Also I'd recommend a cooling stand over a simple mat, the raised bottom lets air circulate.
I remember I was at a LAN party sitting on my friends bed playing Minecraft for 4 straight hours and my laptop gave me a heat rash
Lift up the back before buying stuff
wdym good sir.
Lift the back of the laptop before buying a cooling pad
Undervolting is the way I went to get my laptop down to the 70s at max. MSI GE63 w/ RTX 2070 Full and 9850h.
Can you tell me how
I used this video: https://youtu.be/vfIxf73RGEg
Also another tip is to go in to your power preferences and limit your max CPU usage. On my laptop 97% eliminates the boost from being used not sure about your Dell.
Jarrods tech did a whole video on cooling pads, give him a watch

best cooling pads for gaming laptops
Key Considerations for Cooling Pads:
Cooling Performance: Look for pads with multiple fans (at least two) and good airflow design to effectively dissipate heat. Higher RPM fans generally provide better cooling.
Size and Compatibility: Ensure the cooling pad fits your laptop size. Most pads accommodate laptops from 15 to 17 inches, but check the specifications.
Build Quality: A sturdy construction will ensure durability. Look for materials that can withstand heat and wear over time.
Ergonomics: Some cooling pads offer adjustable height settings for better ergonomics during gaming sessions, which can enhance comfort.
Noise Level: Consider the noise level of the fans. Look for models that operate quietly, especially if you prefer a quieter gaming environment.
Portability: If you travel with your laptop, a lightweight and slim cooling pad may be more convenient.
Recommendations:
Cooler Master Notepal X3: Known for its excellent cooling performance with a large 200mm fan, it provides good airflow and has an ergonomic design. It's also relatively quiet.
Thermaltake Massive 20 RGB: This pad features a large 200mm fan and customizable RGB lighting. It offers great cooling and aesthetics for gamers who enjoy visual flair.
