TL;DR
Department Store and Retail Cards
For those interested in department store credit cards, the US Bank Cash+ offers department stores as a 5% cashback category, which can be beneficial for frequent shoppers [1:1]. However, it's important to note that store-specific cards may not always offer the best rewards compared to general use cards. For example, the Amazon store card provides 5% cashback on Amazon purchases, which can be more versatile given Amazon's wide range of products
[3:2].
Merchant Discount Programs
Amex Offers and Chase Offers are popular programs that provide daily deals and merchant discounts across various categories [2:1]. These programs often feature statement credits and discounts, making them attractive options for shoppers looking to maximize savings.
Online Shopping Discounts
For online shopping, particularly on platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, certain bank cards are known for offering significant discounts during sales. HDFC, SBI, ICICI, and AXIS are frequently mentioned for their discount offers on these platforms [4:5]. The Amazon Pay ICICI card and Flipkart Axis Bank card are specifically designed for maximizing savings on these sites
[5:1].
General Recommendations
While specific retail cards can offer targeted benefits, many users recommend sticking with general-use credit cards that provide cashback or rewards across multiple categories. Cards from major issuers like Amex, Chase, and others typically offer broader benefits and can be used at a variety of merchants, providing flexibility and potentially greater overall savings [2:1].
In conclusion, while store-specific cards can offer unique perks, general-use cards with strong cashback and discount programs may provide better overall value for diverse shopping needs.
I love to shop and want a store card
My mother applies for the Kohls Card every time she goes in. She confirms that she only has to apply for the card to get the 30% discount and not actually approved. So she applies every time, gets turned down because her credit is frozen, and takes her discount.
I’ve been looking for a way to screw over Kohl’s ever since they wouldn’t let me use the 20% off coupon from my Amazon return.
Lol. This is actually a good trick.
Lmao this is so funny
The US Bank Cash+, and the similar Elan Max Cash Preferred, offer department stores as an option for a 5% category.
My husband wanted that card at one point and I've looked at it as a replacement for my Walmart card...hmmmmmm...
Edit: I actually think I'm thinking of the US Bank Shopper card, but that only let's you pick select stores for 6% cashback. This card might be better since I shop at all different department stores.
Remember it does have $95 annual fee which will eat into your rewards after the first year.
Aren't store cards generally regarded as terrible? I don't think I've seen one that's recommended besides the Kroger card
ShopYouWay (Sears) is the GOAT. IYKYK
I worked at Sears when I was 18 and nobody wanted that card so it's crazy that people on here love it lmao
Amex Offers and Chase Offers are two of the most popular daily deal/merchant discount programs offered by credit card companies. You can get a wide variety of discounts and statement credit deals from them.
Our editors also update their picks for the best credit card deals and promotions on a weekly basis, so I recommend checking out their latest selections to see what’s hot right now. As long as you get a card from a major issuer, you should have access to daily deals as well.
I have to apply for a retail credit card to round out my credit profile, I will use this card very little, 3% to 5% of credit limit monthly for now.
Thank you for any suggestions
I think those list on credit reports as the same kind of account as a general use credit card if I’m not mistaken. I’d just stick with the credit cards that can be used anywhere, rather then retail. However, if you use Amazon, the Amazon store card is relatively easy to get and give 5% cash back on Amazon purchases. Useful because Amazon sells practically everything.
My wife is a Amazon and Macy’s freak , so we naturally have those. I’m at Best Buy every week and have a elite status because im consistently buying shit I don’t need. Nordstrom’s is cool, well if you wait for product to make it to the Nordstrom’s Rack store.
Amazon. Easily racked up to $150 in credit without even knowing and have only had it for less than a year.
Or perhaps Target and/or Walmart. Big box stores like that would be the most useful
Target and AZ would be my picks. And HD or Lowe’s could be good—APRs are high so you must commit to paying in full each month, but each of those runs 0% promos from time to time, and it’s easy to get credit line increases (call and tell them you’re thinking about replacing all your kitchen appliances…)
Love the kitchen appliance tip! Thank you!
Please suggest me the names of those banks whose credit cards generally or during sales offer the maximum discount on Amazon and Flipkart.
Sbi cards
HDFC SBI
The big 4 : HDFC, SBI, ICICI, AXIS
💯
Hdfc has the highest instant discounts on Amazon
Hi all, Recently a sale ended, but I couldn’t avail the bank offer discount for HDFC cards of around ₹5,000 because I have a Shoppers Stop HDFC card. I discovered that co-branded credit cards of HDFC are not eligible for bank discounts on Amazon. There was a sale on Flipkart too. A bank discount was available for SBI credit cards, but in that case SBI Cashback cards and Paytm SBI credit cards were not eligible.
One can get an Amazon Pay ICICI credit card for Amazon and a Flipkart Axis Bank credit card for Flipkart shopping, but the total cashback is often far less than the discounts. Also Amazon Pay Credit card does not give cashback on EMI spends.
I want to know- during sales on Amazon or Flipkart, or other major shopping sites, which cards are the best from each bank, considering primarily the eligibility for bank discounts and secondarily some cashback and other perks.
Please share what you know.
Does it work on bank offers? Maybe last or the year before the last year HDFC's business series cards didn't work on sale offers.
You should have basic/LTF cards from 4 top banks, in this SBI has the most frequent offers AFAIK
Axis: MyZone, Neo, Airtel Axis(even tho it's cobranded I have seen it work on every Axis offer)
HDFC: Millennia, Freedom, Moneyback
SBI: SimplyClick/Save, Reliance, BPCL
ICICI: Coral, Platinum
The first card I have written in front of each bank comes highest in preference for u to get, also if they give u some other higher LTF Core Card, take it
Other than listed HDFC core cards, are there any other HDFC cobranded cards that would work (Swiggy HDFC)? Asking because as some have said here, few cards even though they are cobranded, still work without issues.
There is a digital card with Rupay from HDFC that you can easily get. That allows you to access HDFC offers
ICICI CORAL, AXIS NEO/MYZONE(being offered LTF currently), SBI Simply series cards or BPCL cards(if you have fuel expenses).
As you already hold cobranded card from HDFC so you can't get their core cards hence get Pixel play from PAYZAPP app, it works on bank offers and currently being offered LTF but the catch is you need to splice limit form existing card to allot to pixel.
>As you already hold cobranded card from HDFC so you can't get their cobranded cards
What it means ? we can't get another co-branded card if we have one co-branded card of HDFC ?
I am planning to close the Shoppers Stop card and get any core card or upgrade to any core card if possible.
Does Airtel Axis work during Flipkart Sale discount or it is not considered.
in case of Axis and SBI all cobranded card works in sale unless it is specified by banks. For example Paytm SBI and SBI Cashback is not eligible for sale.
SBI cb isn't eligible for instant discount. Apay icici also isn't. Flipkart axis no idea. Hdfc cobranded cards are not eligible 95% of the time for discount .
If you used Hdfc shoppers Stop for roughly a year or more and your income is >35k per month, close it and wait for a month or so and apply for millenia..
I had hdfc shoppers stop from feb 2024 till April 20th or so. I got fed up with it and closed it. And I applied for millennia 2 days later even before shoppers stop was completely closed. Initially they rejected it and 2 weeks later out of the blue they sent the card out for delivery lol.
In any case it's better to wait for month or so before reapplying
I have used that card for more than a year and my income is more than 35k pm. I am also planning to go for millennia. But, can I know why using the card for more than a year important and why it's good to wait before reapplying?
But freedom is a chargeable card and it isn't worth the 500 annual fee. Also nobody knows the upgrade scope from Freedom.
I like to think that I have a strong cash back setup right now that encompasses all of my categories, but one major pitfall at the moment is online purchases at websites like Target (I do same day delivery almost 2-3 times per week for myself and my roommates, but this codes as Target.com), Amazon, Best Buy, Dicks' Sporting Goods, and other online retailers. I'm looking for a card that would most maximize cash back that isn't necessarily specific to just one retailer, since I've opened a few cards recently and am not looking to open 2-3 more (like an Amazon Visa, Target Visa, AND Best Buy Visa, etc.).
I spend about $300/mo. at Target (split amongst friends, but I front), variably at Amazon between $0 and $150/mo, inconsistently at Best Buy but sometimes large purchases ranging from $50-500, and other online retailers. What would be the best card to maximize cash back and cover the broadest range of online shopping? I've seen the US Bank Shopper Rewards which would allow for picking 2 retailers, which is nice for Target & Amazon, but has a $95 AF after the first year though I think I'd still come out ahead. Otherwise, unsure what the best options are.
My current setup is as follows:
Other cards I have but don't use:
Would very much appreciate any suggestions on how to perfect this last category! Preferably any cards with no AF (though if I can justify it, then fine with it) and primarily cash back redemption rather than travel points (though again if justifiable, then fine), as well as an SUB.
Us bank has the shopper cash rewards visa which gives you 6% back off 2 retailers of your choosing at the max $1500 per quarter. Target, Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart are all eligible for the 6%. The only caveat is that the card has a 95$ annual fee (waived the first year though. So you would really need to max the 1500$ quarter for the card to be worthwhile longterm though.
If you add the Cash+, you could use electronic stores as an option and that would cover places like Best Buy and Apple at 5%.
Also worth mentioning, the Altitude Reserve is a fantastic option for Target and Best Buy since they both take Apple Pay. That’s an unlimited 4.5% back with an effective annual fee of $75
Other than that, the store cards for each place would be the best bet for you. However, if you don’t want to juggle too many store cards, definitely consider the US Bank cards above I mentioned.
Thanks! Appreciate the multiple options.
I like the prospect of the US Bank Altitude Reserve, and while I completely understand that the AF is easily recoverable with the cash back and the $300 dining/travel credit, I just hate having to stomach the $400 AF. Moreover for Target Same-Day (the only way I shop at Target), they unfortunately don't offer Apple Pay — it has to be a linked credit card. Otherwise, completely agree the US Bank Altitude Reserve is a fantastic card and one I could see myself getting in the future.
The US Bank Shopper Cash Rewards also is a great card but, as you mentioned, has a $95 AF after the first year which makes it hard since I'd likely hardly come out $100 ahead after considering the fee.
I can look into the Cash+ though, thank you so much for all this!
For Target, you can get the Red Card Debit, which isn't a credit card so it doesn't affect your credit profile at all while giving you 5% discount on everything in Target.
For Amazon, there is the Amazon Prime card which gives unlimited 5% on Amazon as long as you got Prime. If you don't have Prime it is 3%. There is also the Affinity card which also gives 5% on Amazon and bookstores.
For Best Buy, there is the US Bank Cash+ or Elan MCP, it has an electronics store 5% category which does include places like Best Buy or Apple. There is also the Best Buy Visa card, but that pays out in Best Buy reward points which is not cash back.
The other contenders for general online purchases would be your Amex BCE which is 3%, PayPal card which is another 3%, and the BoA Customized Cash which is 3% to 5.25% depending on how much money you got stashed with BoA or Merril Lynch.
Thanks! I do like the prospect of the Target Debit Card. Only reason I'm apprehensive is because I have a system set up for how I track Venmo payments between my credit cards, so the debit card may complicate things, but will definitely look into this.
Target Red Card also has a Credit card version as well, which has the same 5% discount benefit. Only reason why people prefer the debit version more is because why take a hard inquiry when you can get the same benefit without it.
The store cards are far and away the best options. We have a prime card with 5% back and a target card with 5% back. We started with the target debit years ago and swapped for the increased security of a credit card. There’s basically nothing I need at Best Buy that I can’t get at amazon or target. We have a card for a local store that sells electronics also just in case we need something but for a one off I’d just use a decent cash back card.
Your BCE has 3% for online retail or maybe the BofA customized rewards that also has an online shopping category. You could also get the target debit card which gives you the 5% discount but pulls automatically from a debit account!
The Amex BCE is one of the cards for online shopping and you already have that. Store specific cards like Target and Amazon could also help because they earn 5%.
If you don't already use Rakuten that's another way to get cash back on online shopping on top of the rewards you get from credit cards.
If you already use there same day delivery, order Target straight from Shipt. It’s the company that delivers for them and it codes as grocery. Same price and same people shopping the order. Also the BCE covers online spending.
This is super helpful! I do have a bit of a weird setup though, my parents’ CSR has the free Visa Infinite Shipt benefit, and they don’t use Shipt. So setting up a Shipt account but using the Target app allows me to use my own card rather than spending on their card which is required when using Shipt itself (i.e., to get free same day delivery, you have to use the Visa Infinite). Which is why I’m stuck with the Target app, using my own card just makes it less of a headache for my parents when I’m keeping track of splitting things with my friends and roommates.
In that case it may be helpful to use the BCE. I’m not even sure how much the service is because mine was free.
What is the best cash/rewards card for grocery shopping at supermarkets/Costco/Aldi/etc
The answer really depends on where you grocery shop and how much you spend. If at regular supermarkets and you have higher spend, I would recommend the Amex Blue Cash Preferred (if you spend around the $6,000 annual cap) or the Citi Custom Cash (if you spend around the $500 per month cap). If you spend less at regular supermarkets, I would consider the Amex Blue Cash Everyday or the Capital One SavorOne. Others may be better to respond regarding a card for Costco shopping because I don't shop there, but I would imagine good choices would be the Wells Fargo Active Cash (Visa), FNBO Evergreen (Visa), and the TD Bank Double Up (Visa).
If you shop at Costco you're going to need a Visa. Costco doesn't code as groceries so you'll need a general cashback card.
I can recommend the Venture X for a travel card or the Wells Fargo Active Cash as a general use card. 2X or 2% respectively.
If youre shopping at supermarkets besides costco, the Capital One SavorOne will get you 3% back.
Capital One Savor Card. 3% cashback on dining and groceries, 1% back on everything else.
Two cards that come to mind that get 3% at all of those are the venmo visa and the NIH FCU rewards card
Amex Blue Cash Everyday is 3% (up to $6000 a year) at grocery stores is a good possibility on top of the Savor One the other person suggested. Amex is a bit less widely accepted than MasterCard (which is what the SavorOne is) but all major grocery stores around me take it.
Careful with Costco, not only are Wholesale Clubs often coded differently than grocery stores (so cards that advertise a % off on grocery won’t count at Wholesale Clubs or even big box stores like Walmart/Target), I believe Costco ONLY accepts Visa. If you have a Costco membership and shop there a lot, I have heard good things about their own Costco credit card.
Ps: Also be careful before applying. Some cards have similar names. Such a Capital One has a Savor card that has an annual fee where the Savor ONE does not have an annual fee. Same deal with Amex and the Blue Cash Everyday (no annual fee) and the Blue Cash Preferred (annual fee). Annual fee cards can make sense if you use them enough where the boosted rewards they offer outweigh the annual fee but I personally avoid annual fee cards because I don’t have to do a math equation to figure out if it makes sense for me or not.
Hey, I go out shopping a lot (JCPenny, Sears) mostly clothes. I don’t want to get a credit card for each store cause it’d be a bit much, but I really wanna get good cash back in general.
My credit score is around 700
I’d like to find a card that gets 3% but I can’t find one. I have the BoA Unlimited Cash back but it only gives 3% on online shopping
I was looking at the Citi Double Cash card that gets you 2% Unlimited
Up next is the Upgrade Cash Rewards Elite which gives 2.2% when you make a payment, which is fine too.
I looked on Credit Karma but I can’t find what I’m looking for. I also don’t want any annual fees. If you know of anything please let me know, thanks.
Besides USB Cash+, you can get what are essentially a clone of it via Elan Max Cash Preferred thru various Credit Unions. I haven’t checked the categories. Incomplete list of CUs: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/elan-max-cash-preferred-5-on-two-categories/amp/
You don’t want to pay AFs, but once you get a USB Cash+, you should consider eventually in the future the Altitude Reserve if you have a lot of mobile wallet eligible purchases. $75 effective AF and 3% via mobile wallet (which redeems as 4.5% towards travel)
If they’re always department stores like those you list, USBank Cash+ gets 5% back if you choose that category, on up to $2,000/quarter.
> USBank Cash+
Do they also have a travel partners portal?
Yes, 5% cashback on their travel portal too.
This is exactly what I’m looking for then! I’m gonna call them tomorrow and ask a few questions, thank you so much for the recommendation :)
There’s an up-to-date wiki page linked in the sidebar listing flat cashback cards giving 1.5% or higher. I’d look there for options.
One thing you could do is when you find something you like in the store, you might be able to buy it on your phone for in-store pick up.
Are there no good credit cards for online shopping? It seems that everyone likes to talk about travel rewards yet I spend next to nothing every year on airplanes and hotels. 90% of my credit card spend is online shopping on ebay, amazon, and many other sites. If I wanted to save money on travel I would just look for those 2-5% discounted airline/hotel gift card sites.
The only cards that I seems to interest me are the plain 2% flat cashback cards like the amex blue business plus or the new capitalone spark cash plus. My chase amazon prime card also has a low $3k limit which will probably take me forever to grow.
Not all cards are good for all people. If you don't benefit from travel rewards and perks, avoid those cards.
BoA card mentioned below may be of interest. Also some of the cards with rotating 5% categories (e.g. discover it) have paypal, amazon, walmart.com, etc. as rotating categories. Won't be active all the time but if you're willing to juggle a couple of those and are able to plan ahead for big purchases, you can probably get most applicable purchases at 5%+.
If you frequently use a specific site, e.g. amazon, you may also be interested in co-branded cards (e.g. chase and amex amazon cards) or cards that have a sign-up bonus particular to that merchant (e.g. blue cash preferred).
Because this is not category that tends to get high ongoing rewards, it may be worth some combination of getting some of the above in sequence to benefit from their SUBs and as keepers/defaults for online spending, as well as considering whatever cards have decent cash SUBs at any given time for future purchases that don't fit your cards' rewards/schedules.
Churn SUBs.
Otherwise, 5% rotators (buy gift cards if safe w/that card), BOA Cash Rewards, AMZ cards, Altitude Reserve if Mobile Wallet is a payment option.
BoA customized cash. Set the 3% to online shopping. Although it's only $2500 each quarter
This^ unless someone comes out with anything better this is the best we have. Unless you churn.
Your observation is spot on! It seems like the emphasis is often on travel rewards, but for many, online shopping is where a significant chunk of spending happens. If you're leaning towards straightforward cashback rewards, you might want to explore the world of Team Carts.
While not a credit card, Team Carts offers a fresh perspective on online shopping. It allows you to organize your finds, get feedback from friends, and discover new brands. It's a unique platform that brings a social and collaborative aspect to your online shopping experience, making it not just about saving money but also enjoying the process.
Consider giving it a shot alongside your preferred cashback cards, and see how Team Carts can add a new dimension to your online retail adventures. Happy shop
5.25% back all online shopping with BoA Customized Cash Rewards at platinum honors tier if you select online shopping as your 3% category.
yeah only on $2500 though which is like nothing
Between all the cobranded versions, I’m pretty sure it’s not that hard to end up with quite a few of these. Someone has said on here before that they held 7 at the same time. If you do more than $70k in online spending in a year (and aren’t a business), you probably don’t care that much about cash back anyway.
I mean better than nothing and that card is 0 fee, so pretty good imo
I mainly use credit cards for online shopping offers, flight bookings, and lounge access. Suggest the best cards for this. Also, what is the situation with RuPay cards; are there any benefits?

best credit cards for shopping discounts
Key Considerations for Choosing Credit Cards for Shopping Discounts:
Cashback Rewards: Look for cards that offer cashback on purchases, especially in categories like groceries, dining, and online shopping. Common cashback rates range from 1% to 5%.
Sign-Up Bonuses: Many credit cards offer attractive sign-up bonuses if you meet a minimum spending requirement within the first few months. This can significantly boost your rewards.
Retail Partnerships: Some credit cards have partnerships with specific retailers, offering additional discounts or cashback when you shop at those stores.
Annual Fees: Consider whether the benefits of the card outweigh any annual fees. Some cards with high rewards may have fees that are worth it, while others may not.
Introductory Offers: Look for cards with 0% APR introductory offers on purchases or balance transfers, which can help you save on interest if you plan to carry a balance.
Recommendations:
Chase Freedom Flex: Offers 5% cashback on rotating categories (like groceries and online shopping), 3% on dining and drugstores, and 1% on all other purchases. It also has a sign-up bonus.
Discover it Cash Back: Provides 5% cashback on rotating categories (up to a quarterly maximum) and 1% on all other purchases. Discover also matches all cashback earned in your first year.
Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card: If you frequently shop on Amazon, this card offers 5% cashback on Amazon purchases for Prime members, along with 2% at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores.
Citi Double Cash Card: Offers 2% cashback on every purchase (1% when you buy and 1% when you pay), making it a great option for straightforward cashback without worrying about categories.
Choosing the right card depends on your shopping habits and preferences, so consider which features align best with your spending patterns!
