What Redditors are Saying

Best Cruiser Skateboard

Comet Cruisers

Comet Cruisers are highly regarded for their stability and carving capabilities. They are praised for their comfortable flex, rocker, and wheelbase, making them suitable for longer rides [1:1]. However, they may not be ideal for beginners due to the narrow deck and specific truck setup [1:2]. The Comet's unique design with TKP trucks is appreciated by experienced riders who enjoy a responsive and lively ride [1:3].

Popular Cruiser Brands

For those new to skateboarding, brands like LandYachtz and Arbor are often recommended. The LandYachtz Dinghy and Arbor Pilsner are popular choices for their versatility and ease of use [3:1]. Globe's Big Blazer is another excellent option for beginners, offering a stable ride with its longer wheelbase and mellower concave [3:1].

Custom Builds and Modifications

Many skateboarders prefer customizing their setups for optimal performance. A common recommendation is to start with a standard skateboard deck and add soft wheels like OJ Hot Juice or Ricta Cloud 78s for a smoother ride [2:3]. Customizing trucks and bushings can also enhance the riding experience, as seen in setups using Thunder trucks and Spitfire Superwides [5:4].

Unique and Artistic Decks

Some skateboard enthusiasts seek out unique decks for both their aesthetic appeal and performance. The Winkowski Aquatic Night deck, for example, is valued for its artwork and shape, making it a sought-after choice for collectors and riders alike [5:1]. These decks often serve dual purposes as both functional boards and display pieces.

Recommendations for Rough Terrain

For those dealing with rough pavements, it's advisable to choose a cruiser with larger, softer wheels to absorb road imperfections. Boards that allow for easy maneuverability and have a kicktail are preferred for urban environments where weaving through crowds is necessary [1:9].

Hey all,

Does anyone own a comet cruiser? And are they as good as the hype I hear suggests?

Ok-Salt9670 · 4 months ago

I own one, it's a good comfortable cruiser, very nimble and responsive but the deck is not very roomy for beginners.

It's great and fun for short to medium distances under 10-15km and many use it for freeride and slides.

The flex makes it comfortable and absorbs road imperfections pretty well and the 70mm snakes are very good wheels.

You can also pump the Comet a bit with its wedged de-wedged truck setup.

I do and it's the best board i've bought so far. compared to other brands, the stock setup is built perfectly. You might just need to change the bushings depending on your weight or how you ride, but for me they were perfect.

I wish I could try the Comet Shred 33 as I like cruisers with popsicle decks, but the comet cruisers narrows, flexible, lively and responsive deck is an engineering masterpiece. its made to be ridden with TKP trucks so for me that's something that you won't find on many other cruisers.

the price at 325$ might seem steep but I've built other cruisers and when you take into account getting a good deck (let's say 100$), similar quality wheels (60-70$), trucks (60$), bushings (15$), bearings (20$), risers/wedges (15$) .. this all comes around 280$.

im sure there are more affordable cruisers out there, but you don't get powell snake wheels, the right wedges, venom bushings, .. for example Landyachtz boards may come at a cheaper price but I had to change the bushings, the wheels, and honestly wasn't a fan of the Polar Bear trucks.

on the Loaded website you can see the prices of decks and also complete setups .. you can customize your board choosing different wheels, and trucks .. and you'll see that the prices are similar to what a comet cruiser costs.

Finally someone's agreeing with me on the Polar Bears! I'm not much of a fan of the CC either TBH as I want more room on my board.

I also have a Comet Shred 35 and it pretty much feels like a regular skateboard but with longer wheelbase. That one I do like and I'm thinking about putting Pantheon Stylus on it. I have a feeling that would be right up my alley.

the board I'm riding now, which is a hybrid cruiser i guess, is an 8.5 street popsicle deck with stylus trucks and the pantheon sliders.

the trucks are great, and the pantheon sliders (66 mm and 74A) were just a delight straight from the box.

i bought riptide paris pivot cups for it, and kept the stock bushings on both trucks, but i added riptide cone bushings for a softer ride. the bushings from pantheon are good, but I've been enjoying mixing them up with riptide ones, and so far the trucks and wheels ride really well.

also the prices were pretty honest. i think i got trucks and wheels for 100$.

i normally ride powell snakes 69mm, 75a from the comet, and if i would get the shred I would probably change the wheels as i see they come with snakes 66mm and 82a.

I think that the comet cruiser is unique due to the deck's shape and how it's setup, but the shred can be replicated and built by yourself with other gear.

but thanks for the feedback!

Depends who you ask! It's a divisive board but a well thought out complete setup that with no further hassle.

Some people see it as the be all and end all of skating. Some people see it as very limited in scope. Some people see it as a bad setup for beginner skill practice. Many beginners click with it. Some people see it as overly expensive for what it is. Some people see the value in a truly complete setup.

Personally... I'm in the camp that thinks beginners should probably skate something more conventional first. I see it as a freeriders cruiser that leans heavily into a more advanced style of riding and you aren't going to achieve that easily unless you already have some fundamental skills. I think the parts list and construction is so different from conventional freeride gear that it is hard to learn the skills you need to skate it in that way. But - it is a nice board that moves very well and I understand why people love them.

I (was) a fairly competent skateboarder but now I’ve just been riding shaped decks with soft wheels but I’m now 2 stone heavier than when I last owned a proper longboard that had any flex. My zip zinger is only a 7.75 at the widest point to not too worried about the width, but more that I won’t be a fan of the flexibility of the deck

3 upvotes on reddit
M
MidlandsBoarder · 4 months ago

Maybe. It's really hard to say. The flexy deck gives it some unique properties. It makes it very comfortable and gives some energy return which works with the specific truck setup. Some say it's what makes it good. But for me personally I don't really like boards that flexible.

I have a smaller slidey cruiser cut from a zenit freeride mould which is a lot stiffer but even though I do like riding it I don't ride it very much. As a trick focused skater I'd rather cruise on boards that I can skate the way I like to skate. The comet ain't it. The level of flex is not conducive. If I want to just push I'll skate my pantheon. If I want to be nimble and do stuff it would never be my first choice either.

For me it's a one hit wonder. Something I would skate, say that's nice, then proceed to ignore except when I feel guilty about all the money I spent! As a skateboarder you may feel the same way. But then again you might not. I know people with a similar background who don't feel the same way I do.

I'm not being very helpful!

Hey… would you mind recommending something to an almost beginner? I do have experience with popsicle decks, having been into skating a little when I was younger. In fact I own a good popsicle deck now, but I’m in no way an experienced or even intermediate skater.

I live in Brighton, we have very rough pavements so would like something capable of running big wheels to soften them up. It needs to be shortish, light and nimble to weave through crowds. Kicktail preferred. We also have a new pump track close by that I’d like to take advantage of.

The comet is enticing but it’s a super expensive gamble, particularly as I’m in the UK.

A complete setup would be ideal for ease but don’t mind building my own.

I have a buddy in Brighton with a happy boards sticky which is as close to a comet as you'll get. He set the trucks up just like a comet. Same bushings and everything! He's heavily involved with the surfskate meetups there so it would be easy to find him and I am sure he'd let you try it out. Come on the discord and I'll introduce you to Trazan.

Either way it may be good to go meetup with those guys. Also Luca (longboard_sloth - ig) and his longboard crew of assorted skaters! There's a bunch of them here at hog hill right now and they have their own thing going on in Brighton with dance/freestyle ect. A bit of freeride. Luca runs a board festival in Brighton with competitions and cruising.

Personally... I am a believer of community in skating and you are lucky to live in a place with great communities! Get involved.

Love mine so much. It brings a lot of joy to simply cruising around. Feels extremely smooth and fun to turn. Very surfy. But also oddly stable. I also really like what the company stands for. They’re out there educating people on the benefits of skate culture and public skate spaces. It’s a small company you can feel good about putting your money into. The fact that the board is incredibly fun is the cherry on top.

3 upvotes on reddit

I have one and I’ll recommend. It’s super stable and carves deep. When you let up on a carve, it wants to stand you up and go straight. It is narrow and anyone with a moderate size foot will have some overhang. I have clown feet and mine overhang plenty. There’s a mental hurdle with foot size and deck width some can’t get over which I understand. The flex, rocker, and wheelbase make it comfortable to push regular and mongo for longer distances even with the 69mm wheels. There is a tail but it’s not as easy to kick turn as conventional cruisers because of the wheelbase. This doesn’t matter as much with something that turns on a dime. I had to add harder bushings because I’m a heavier rider. So if you weigh more than 180lbs, I’d probably plan on stepping the Venom SHR bushings up to a harder durometer. That is an added expense to an already expensive setup. I’m always looking for eBay deals on skateboards and I’ve never come across one. I don’t think there’s a lot of buyer’s remorse with the Comet Cruiser. People don’t seem to get rid of them.

Which Cruiser Brand do I choose?

Hey guys, I'm new into skateboarding, and I'm thinking on buying a cruiser to move around the city faster (it's a small city). My local skate shop just have this 3 brands for cruisers: Miller, Duster and Riviera.

Do you have some positive review on some of these brands? Which would you recommend me?

Thanks for your help :)

I will paraphrase SkatebaordHQ… Best cruiser complete - fight between LandYachtz Dinghy and Arbor Pilsner. Best cruiser for New skaters - Globe Big Blazer.

I’m a fellow new guy, I built one (off a popsicle deck) and bought one (the Big Blazer). Even with just 1.5 months skating, I can tell a big difference between them. The BB is a decidedly easier board to ride owing to a longer wheel base and mellower concave. The Globe provided wheels and bearings don’t feel substantially different to me than the Bronson G2 and OJ Superjuice I stuck on my other deck. The Blazer is slightly faster (like 9 mph to 10 mph, GPS measured, on pretty flat ground), but that might just be because I am more confident pushing like a mad man on it.

3 upvotes on reddit
n3wsk8r · OP · 2 years ago

Kudos on this much experience within your first 1.5 months! Globe has some beautiful decks, and my personal favourite one I've seen so far. Do you plan on learning tricks?

I'm 3 weeks into boarding and so far have purchased and returned a Gonex 43" drop-through from Amazon (they told me I could keep the board and just refunded me). My proper purchase once I realized I liked cruising was the Dinghy. I don't plan on learning many tricks but I'd like to be able to hop curbs and cracks for seamless commuting so a kicktail was preferred.

I’m sort of in the same spot - I want to cruise around and be mobile enough on the board to go over or around anything in my way. I think I’d really enjoy downhill, pump tracks, bowls even without getting into the really technical side of things.

You can make a cruiser out of anything. I usually recommend something 9.5”+ for comfort, but that’s up to personal preference. Depending on wheelbase you could even consider RKPs (for anything ~20”+) and then you could skip risers. Get some 75-84a wheels.

Hi there, well, I have a cruiser mase from a similar deck and it's not hard; TKP 170 trucks, angled 1/2" soft pads, 63mm 78a wheels. The brands are up to you. Rides like gliding on the street.

One of my favorite cruisers is a popsicle shaped AntiHero with some wheel wells that I put some 78a 60mm OJ Super Juice wheels on. I think the best things to consider are comfort both standing and pushing, soft wheel durometer, how big of wheels you can cram under without sacrificing maneuverability, and wheel type. Centerset vs offset wheels will determine the size trucks you need. I have been looking to do something similar to a Welcome deck. Their shapes and graphics are sick.

Ive thrown on some 8.5" Thunder trucks, 94a bushings, Spitfire Superwides 58mm 80a with Zealous bearings, Pepper clear grip, and Opera clear rails.

Nice here is mine, also a fan of thunder trucks slightly more narrow and wide wheels. Salba tiger. 151 hollow lights, thunder 100a bushings (but I'm 215, doesn't turn great but for cruising so stable) might switch to the 94a. 65mm blood orange Morgan pro 80a. ¼ riser. Lucky 7 bearings for now it was just so expensive that I'll get Swiss later. Mob grip

I have one of the originals when all of them were sort of a light tan color. The manufacturer says they have not found a weight limit yet. Hard to explain but it might be even grippier than regular grip because the rubber in your shoes locks into the spaces, plus there is grip texture on the top as well. Hard to explain without being able to stand on one unfortunately

If the steering of your current setup is too hard, try softer bushings or different trucks.

Also you have a drop cruiser with reverse kingpin trucks. My opinion, but regular old school cruisers with traditional trucks are much more manageable. Traditional kingpin trucks like Independent will be much surfier off the shelf than any longboard trucks too.

What do you know like about the LY? Are you looking for a cruiser or actual long board? If you are looking for something that steers easily, look for something with a shorter wheel base. Something around 14inches. No more than 15.

best cruiser skateboard

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Cruiser Skateboard:

  1. Deck Material: Look for decks made from high-quality materials like maple or bamboo for durability and flexibility. Maple offers sturdiness, while bamboo provides a lightweight feel.

  2. Deck Shape and Size: A wider deck (around 8-10 inches) provides more stability, which is ideal for cruising. Consider a drop-through or pintail shape for a smoother ride.

  3. Wheels: Softer wheels (78A-83A durometer) are better for cruising as they absorb shocks and provide a smoother ride over rough surfaces. Wheel size (around 55-60mm) also affects stability and speed.

  4. Trucks: Look for durable trucks that are lightweight and provide good turning capabilities. Aluminum trucks are a popular choice for their strength and performance.

  5. Portability: If you plan to carry your skateboard around, consider its weight and size. A compact cruiser is easier to transport.

Recommendations:

  • Land Yachtz Dinghy: This is a highly regarded cruiser known for its stability, lightweight design, and smooth ride. It features a 28-inch deck, soft wheels, and a variety of graphic options.

  • Penny Board: If you prefer a smaller, more portable option, the Penny Board (22 inches) is a classic choice. It's made from durable plastic, has a fun design, and is great for short commutes.

  • Globe Blazer: This 26-inch cruiser offers a great balance of performance and portability. It has a sturdy deck, soft wheels, and a stylish design, making it perfect for cruising around town.

Choosing the right cruiser skateboard ultimately depends on your personal preferences and riding style, so consider what features matter most to you!
