TL;DR
Studios with Beginner-Friendly Atmosphere
Movement Lifestyle in Burbank and Rūts in Koreatown are recommended for their welcoming environment suitable for beginners. These studios offer a range of dance styles and are known for their friendly vibes, making them ideal for someone just starting out [1:1].
Dance Styles and Specific Classes
For those interested in styles beyond hip hop, Groove Zone in Burbank offers a very beginner-friendly approach with the motto "I bet I can teach you," which is encouraging for absolute novices [2:1]. Additionally, Debbie Allen Studio provides contemporary and modern dance classes
[1:2], while Hama's Dance Center on Moorpark offers various styles
[2:5].
Hip Hop Dance Options
Playground LA on Melrose and Millennium in Studio City are popular choices for hip hop classes, though they might cater more towards dancers with some experience [4:2]
[4:3]. Danceline LA also offers hip hop classes and is located on the west side, providing another option for those closer to that area
[4:3].
Specialized Dance Classes
In North Hollywood, Evolution Studios hosts a beginner bellydance class through Dance Garden LA [5:1]. Align Ballet Method specializes in ballet for adult beginners and has classes available in North Hollywood
[5:3]. These options are great for individuals looking to explore specific dance styles.
Additional Recommendations
For those open to different dance experiences, Soho Dance in Sherman Oaks offers ballroom lessons with both private and group classes [3:4]. The Mindbody app is suggested as a tool to find local classes and check availability
[3:5].
Is this allowed ? So sorry if not but help. I just had to dance in a small project and goddamn am I glad it was a small thing. I don't even know where to begin. The macarena would be complex tbh but this is something I don't think I can afford to be this bad at. What should I do? Anyone have good experiences at dance classes in LA for beginners? I know there are some really high level ones so I would really prefer to be in something purely for beginners at first. Also something flexible because my schedule is always changing. Any recommendations appreciated!
It's so bad that I don't think I could actually express myself through dancing in my own life. I don't have much time to go out so I would have no idea how to dance in a club. How do you learn that?
Debbie Allen studio is good for contemporary and modern
Check out beginner dance classes at movement lifestyle (burbank) or rūts (ktown). Friendly vibes at both of those studios!
Hi, I’m (29F) looking for recommendations for a dance class for absolute beginner (anything besides hip hop). I’ve seen recommendations for playground and millennium; however, these studios seem to be geared towards professionals. Any ideas of local studios that would cater to a beginner? Westside would be even better! Thank you 🙂
the colburn school in dtla has a lot of kind of dance for all levels!
Cumbia ,salsa ,merengue in east LA they have beginners or advanced
Not to hijack this thread, but I'm looking for something similar, closer to the Valley. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Is diamond bar too far for you? My husband and I just starting at arthur murray studio there, and we get a free lesson if we recommend someone :) We're learning Argentinian tango, a little bit of swing, and there are weekly group classes included with the private lessons!
Hama’s Dance Center on Moorpark
C spot or Crenshaw Yoga and Dance
Groove zone in burbank with Yolanda. My partner started classes there and has loved it. They had 0 dance experience before and groove zone’s motto is “I bet I can teach you”. Very beginner friendly and I love that my love gets to do something fun and not too stressful.
I'm looking for ways to get outside my comfort zone - when I was younger, I took a lot of music and art classes. I've never been particularly coordinated, but in my efforts to build a skill (that incorporates exercise), I thought it might be fun to get into dancing.
I'm a male in my mid-30's and open to different styles, including solo and partner. Are there any studios or classes you'd recommend?
Also open to other suggestions - I tried tai chi before moving to Los Angeles, but I think I'm looking for something more fun.
You can sign up for dance classes at a local city college! Affordable and fun.
I took modern dance at LACC a few years ago. I’m planning to take another this fall.
Are the other people in the class college age though? I'd feel weird being in class with kids that young
I took the class in my 30s. But I actually can’t remember the ages of the other students in the class! I feel like it was people in their 20s and 30s though. I didn’t feel out of place.
I loooooooooove Zumba if you're looking for a fun dance/exercise class. There's also a number of dance classes around LA like swing dancing, bachata, salsa, etc.
I don't know any studios I'd recommend, it might be good to try out a few near you and see which vibe suits you the best.
My wife and I spent much of the first part of this year taking ballroom lessons at Soho Dance in Sherman Oaks. They have a Westwood studio too. Private lessons are available, but there is a variety of group classes too. Salsa seemed to be a recurring favorite, but they offered a lot of options. Memberships saved money, but they also had drop-in rates. Definitely recommend, we had a great experience there.
This looks perfect. Thank you!
Where in the city are you? I drove an hour in traffic both ways to go to a West Coast Swing class and can say, that was too far!
I’m trying another West Coast Swing class for beginners tonight at Corbin Bowl in Tarzana which starts at 7:30.
Try the Mindbody app to find classes near you.
movers and shakers bachata 101. fun? very. the instruction is great. also translates into a fun social activity, and they have frequent social dance get togethers so you can practice with other bachataers in real life. bachata is pretty popular right now, and bachata music is great. plus, it's really learnable, and there are endless variations and stylistic moves to develop as you get more experienced. I couldn't learn salsa for the life of me (not good at counting in my head), but the bachata count is so easy.
Hi! 25, new to LA and never taken a dance class before. Are there any places that are friendly for beginners and for people in their 20's?
I've been taking classes at Playground LA on Melrose and most of their classes have been easy to follow along. I think most people are in their 20s with the occasional kid.
Grooves at Millenium (studio city) might be a good fit for you. They also have “beginner” classes but those can also be a little advanced if you’ve never taken a class before.
Danceline LA also has hip hop classes, I haven’t been there but it’s on the west side if that’s closer to you.
Unfortunately we lost 3 of our major adult dance studios during covid so many of the options are gone:/ Because of that if you find a teacher you like follow them on insta and they’ll often post pop up classes they teach!
Okay if you ever want a fellow beginner-dance-class-taking-friend to go along with you, im yo’ girl.
It kind of depends on your definition of "beginner".
If you're a beginner in the "I've never danced before but no, really I've been dancing all my life, but now want to get better" sense, then Millenium or Playground. u/kemk8106 mentioned Grooves at Millenium, I'm not familiar with that in particular, but Millenium has always been great to me. I will say "beginner" is not for the first time dancer there, in most cases.
They also mentioned Danceline, also a good choice!
The only other place I can think of off the top of my head is LA Dancefit. This would be good if you really are taking a class for the very first time. Some of their classes are zumba-esque and some are choreography based, but very beginner friendly.
Also, lots of the pole/aerial studios also offer dance classes. Lots of twerk-based classes (always beginner friendly and lots of ridiculous fun) as well as hip hop sometimes. I don't know what things look like post-Covid, but I know Evolve and Jagged Vertical both had dance classes at one point. Lots of other studios like that as well.
Not sure whats actually open due to covid if anything. Anyone go to any studios out here they can recommend? I was a dancer in high school and really wanted to get back into it.
I actually teach an adult beginning jazz class in North Hollywood! Feel free to DM me if you would like some information about it:)
Align Ballet Method specializes in ballet for adult beginners. They have upcoming classes at their North Hollywood location.
I’m running a weekly cat dancing class at my apartment clubhouse if you’d like to join. so far it’s just me an my cat.
What style?
Anything really! Not so much into hip hop, i like jazz an lyrical ballet type stuff
There is a great beginner bellydance class at Evolution Studios in North Hollywood Wednesdays at 5:45pm. Dance Garden LA runs their program out of that studio.
Incoming freshman here! I am really interested in dancing, but I am incredibly bad at it. I wanted to give it a try in college, but I am afraid because I am a beginner. Is there any dance clubs focused on beginners?
Wildcat welcome will promote an event called rock the lake that is a revue of all student run performing art groups- some of them might even make announcements about how to get involved. They have auditions or if they’re more social they will likely mention opportunities for first years.
A handful of dance groups will also have open choreography events that they promote on their social media channels and on the cats on campus calendar that are open and free for anyone to join.
Last year, SOA also sponsored a series of events called beginners welcome during winter quarter for non-members to discover a new hobby or skill hosted at an event by a student group
I’m in the same boat!

BLAST (Ballroom Latin and Swing Team) has beginner lessons each week focused on a different style of dance. They’re really fun and taught by some of the students in the club. Not sure if this is the style of dance you’re thinking of though lol
Hi I just want to know where can I enroll for a dance class for beginners? I dont have a background in dancing but would like to learn. Thanks

Looking for recs in Pasadena/west la/the valley?
If you have a gym membership you could start with something like Zumba. The moves are usually really basic and repeated a lot. And if you mess up, nobody is going to care because the main purpose is for it to be a workout not perfecting a dance style. This might help you get used to following a teacher and get you loosened up so you don't fall over your own feet when you jump into a real class.
Burbank Rec used to offer classes, b.c. (before Covid).
What's "affordable"?
3rd Street Dance Studio (Beverly Center) and Millennium Dance (Valley) run about $21-22/class. UCLA Rec Center has some as well, though there are some up-front costs for access, and parking is a thing.
Hoover Rec Center by USC has/had Zumba fitness classes for a buck. May not be your crowd.
City and County rec centers have some classes; they may not be findable online, you may have to go looking for printed flyers.
If you don't mind dancing with old ladies, there are a good number of partner dancing classes associated with senior centers, and cheap.
You can also find every move on Youtube, if you have a mirror...
Hi Everyone,
I'm in San Diego and I'm looking for the best beginners classes. I'm currently taking classes at Jibe Studios and at The Ballet Company but each only offer 1 class a week. Would like yo try and take at least 1-2 more classes or find a Studio that offers multiple classes throughout the week. If you know of any please let me know. Thank you!
If you want to start from zero then check out the civic dance program through the city. It used to only be $100 for a whole semester but I'm sure they've increased their prices since then. Still very affordable.
Otherwise it's good to ask where you're located. This city is very spread out.
Mid-city: Balletiquette has classes for adults almost every since day. Ali is great.
Stage 7 has classes on the weekends I believe
BalletCenter studios has classes on the weekends
North County
Coastal Ballet has classes on Sunday and Wednesday evenings with Robyn - she's great, really really emphasizes correct alignment and technique and works with everyone at every level
The absolute best ballet studio in San Diego is San Diego academy of ballet. Their facilities will make your jaw drop, gorgeous. Great flooring that won’t mess up your joints/body. Best training, even for beginner adults. The beginner classes are Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:30. They also offer intermediate classes several times a week depending on how ready you Feel.
Golden state ballet has a good vaganova teacher for adult ballet although it's only three times a week.
Looked them up and those class times work with my schedule. Thanks a bunch
City Ballet School on Monday nights is a true beginner class. The Rosin Box Project on Wednesday is more advanced beginner.
Thank you I will check out both
best dance classes for beginners in los angeles

Class Size: Smaller class sizes often provide more personalized attention, which can be beneficial for beginners.
Location and Accessibility: Choose a studio that is conveniently located to make attending classes easier.
Trial Classes: Many studios offer trial classes or drop-in sessions. This allows you to experience the class before committing.
Community and Atmosphere: A welcoming and supportive environment can enhance your learning experience.
