Millennium Dance Complex

Millennium Dance Complex is one of the most well-known studios in LA, offering a wide variety of classes including hip-hop, contemporary, and theater jazz. It's popular among beginners for its drop-in class structure, allowing flexibility without long-term commitment [1:1][1:4]. However, some find it intimidating due to its association with the entertainment industry [3:2].

LA Dancefit

LA Dancefit is frequently recommended for those new to dance or looking to improve their movement skills. It offers a range of classes suited to beginners and is noted for its welcoming atmosphere [1:2][3:1][3:3].

The C Spot

Located in Mid City, The C Spot is praised for its fun classes and beginner-friendly environment. It's a good option for those looking to explore hip-hop and fusion styles [1:5][4:1].

Movement Lifestyle

Movement Lifestyle in Burbank provides a chill vibe with diverse class offerings, making it suitable for beginners [2:2][5:2]. They focus on industry-specific choreography classes, which can be beneficial for actors looking to enhance their performance skills [2:1].

Other Notable Studios

  • Epicenter in Torrance is recommended for its inclusive community and beginner-oriented classes [3:2].
  • Athletic Garage in Pasadena offers affordable classes and a variety of styles, including Kpop [5:1].
  • Evolution Studios in North Hollywood is another option for tap classes and more [4:1].
  • Ruts Studio in Koreatown is known for its intro classes and great teachers [2:1][5:2].

These studios offer a range of styles and environments, catering to both beginners and those looking to advance their dance skills. Consider factors such as location, class variety, and community vibe when choosing the best fit for your needs.

Dance Studios in LA? Actor trying to learn dance.

ORIGINAL POST

I am an actress living in Los Angeles. Aside from partner dancing, I have ZERO dance experience that is helpful as a performer. As an actor, being able to dance is a HUGE bonus. So I’m trying to start learning.

I am looking for dance studio recommendations in LA for my situation. I think trying something like contemporary, modern, or hip-hop would be useful, but am unsure?

I was nationally ranked athlete (swimmer), so I can pickup kinesthetic movement pretty quickly. I can feel a beat, but my body just isn’t used to responding…aka average white girl trying to dance syndrome.

Any advice is welcomed! Thanks!

Where are you located? I moved here last year as an actress who used to dance but was really really out of shape and scared to get back into it. I’m in the valley, like studio city area, and when I moved here I started doing classes at Millenium. I was initially really put off by the TikTok thing (lol) but I like how many beginner classes they have and how you can kind of drop in and drop out without having to commit to a long term class. If you like the combo and the instructor, you can go the rest of the week. If not, you can pick another class. I have absolutely nothing in LA to compare it to, but it was a lot cheaper than a lot of the classes in the city I previously lived in.

If you are interested, I would recommend starting with beginner jazz or jazz funk. Those classes will have less students than something like hip hop and so you will get more individual instruction from the teacher. I’ve been to classes with only 3/4 people in them and I thought it was really cool to have basically 1.5 hours of private instruction with a professional for just $20. TikTok makes this place look like it’s just crawling with influencers and professional dancers, but the beginner classes are filled with people all shapes, sizes, ages, and experience levels.

I’m looking for theater dance classes in LA and not sure what studios offer this.  Also I feel like millennium is not a studio for someone who has no experience at all

Millennium on Ventura has everything (their theater jazz on wednesdays is so fun), brockus in east la (I think?) has more contemporary ish stuff

But dance in LA is obviously huge, are you trying to become a dancer or just a better mover? If it’s the latter I just recommend maybe taking some actor-focused movement classes at LACC, ELAC or SMC (or beginning dance classes at SMC).

Studio classes move really fast here and if ur an absolute beginner it might feel weird popping into some classes

Doesn't LA have a million dance studios? Just choose a style and take an Intro class. If that seems too easy, jump up to Beginner.

You'll progress quickly but you're luckily in LA with lots of advance class options so no need to worry about plateauing.

Millennium and Playground I know have beginner level classes open to everyone, I know Tmilly has really good teachers as well but not sure about levels over there. I would really recommend finding a “grooves” class for absolute beginners because you can work on coordination and feeling the music without worrying about choreography. Good luck on your journey!! Have fun and don’t judge yourself because no one else is!!

Edit: grooves classes are hip hop based, if you’re interested in theater, ballet, modern or contemp you may find a “basic” class just for the first one (i know they have them in ny tbh not sure about la so sorry) but in general hip hop would be a good foundation especially in the era we’re in right now, there’s a niche market for contemp but for an actor i would try hip hop or theater but im not sure what your goals are

Pick a dance style that looks fun and appealing to you. E.g I like hip hop.

Find a studio you like. E.g. for me, driving distance, price, and quantity of classes / week are what I consider important. But you may find other factors, like variety of classes or community vibe more important to you.

Start going. Remember, unlike your high school classroom where everyone is starting from chapter 1, in dance classes, everyone will have a different level. Some people will be much better than you seemingly naturally while you feel like you're drowning. Don't let that discourage you.

Make sure to practice a little at home. Remember high school, some kids just showed up to class without doing homework/reading the textbook, and were sliding by. While other kids did the preparation work and got to fully benefit from the class time. It's a hobby (at least for me), so you don't have to kill yourself practicing it if you're not having fun. But the more practice you put in on your own time, the more you'll gain from class time.

I suggest Ruts studio, they have a lot of good intro classes, great teachers with valid credentials and style diversity. movement lifestyle as well. Offstage or Playground, if you want more industry specific and open styles choreography classes.

Not sure where you live but I highly recommend epicenter in Torrance. As someone who danced 10+ years ago and am trying to pick it back up, lots of studios in LA are very intimidating due to being in the heart of the entertainment industry. Epicenter is very family / old / young / beginner oriented and inclusive. It’s started by the person who basically brought the choreo hip hop community to YouTube (Elm Pizarro) and he still teaches beginner classes starting with easy foundation, his classes are super wholesome

Dance studios in LA?

Posted by electrictennisracket · in r/LosAngeles · 2 years ago

Apologies if this is the wrong sub for this!!

So many fantastic studios closed down during Covid, like the SweatSpot and Edge. I’m desperate to take class, and I know there’s Millennium, but what else is there? Ideally I’d love to find a place that has a strong community, but isn’t necessarily Beyoncé’s backup dancers in every class.

I know there are some one-offs, Dean Elex has a great class called “It’s Wednesday, Bitch”, and I’m sure there are more.

Selfishly, I’d love to get to make one place my home.

Thanks for any tips!!

Did you know that California has a whole set of laws on the books regulating dance studios? It's a holdover from the 50s when dance studios would take advantage of lonely seniors. lol The next installment of "the more you know" will be broadcast later tonight. lol

Looking for classes

Posted by Ok_Constant_2049 · in r/Dance · 27 days ago

Hey dancers! Im an amateur dancer based in LA who really enjoys taking classes in widely known PLAYGROUND on melrose and Millennium as well , but recently I’ve been thinking about how crowded these places are and slightly overpriced, so i just thought I’d go ahead and ask if you guys know any other studios that are still good , not as famous , and preferably have teachers that don’t just give a class once 3 weeks, teachers that I can frequently see, so that they can be consistent with my progress . Thank you so much! <3

When I was looking up classes, these are what I found. I've only tried athletic garage, but know people who've gone to some of the others.

- athlethic garage (pasadena $14/hr)

- playground (hollywood)

- millennium (north hollywood)

- movement lifestyle (burbank)

- Versa style (burbank $7/hr) but only 1 class a week (friday 6:30-8)

- eitghty eight (burbank $12/hr)

- ruts (ktown)

- flowmotion (santa monica)

- Groove zone (burbank)

- revolution (montrose)

Good studios in San Diego?

Posted by CheeryCheetah11 · in r/CompetitionDanceTalk · 12 days ago

I recently took a two year break from dance. Last year, I came back and went to a studio in another state that was good, but didn't really push me. I still feel like I have pretty good technique but I'm probably not at the level I should be for my age. Anyway, I'm looking for a studio that has patient teachers that will also push me enough to help me improve

Are you looking for a competitive dance studio? What area do you live in?

1 upvotes on reddit
danceparent3 · 9 days ago

Yes, more details please. We have a ton of amazing studios here in SD; but they all have different areas of expertise and are more designed around the level of commitment you’re looking to give. There’s also a few you should try to avoid….🙈

3 upvotes on reddit
danceparent3 · 9 days ago

I believe every studio has its own strengths and weaknesses, and each family will find what works best for them. That said, the studios I would personally avoid are those with a history of creating toxic environments.

When I was growing up here in San Diego as a competitive dancer, I experienced this firsthand. At one studio, the owner once told me—when I was only seven years old—that I would “never be dancing with those girls.” She also scheduled my private lessons at 10 p.m., which was far from appropriate for a child.

Leaving that environment at age 10 was the best decision I ever made, and it shaped how I view healthy training spaces today.

I don’t believe in putting other studios down, since everyone has their preferences, but I am always open to sharing my honest perspective about why certain studios might not be the most supportive places for a dancer or their family.

Edited to add: I have no strong feelings toward any but I’m just curious if they are the same ones I’d avoid 😜

For a younger crowd, I would recommend Lindy Groove.

If you can make it out to Orange County, then I would definitely check out Atomic Ballroom and Old Towne Swing (used to be called Stutters Ball).

Rusty’s Rhythm Club had a lot of younger people the last time I went for a live event but it still probably skews older. I can’t say for sure because I don’t go there often.

PBDA has an older crowd but it’s a lot of fun and everyone is very nice.

Need a good dance studio for my 8 year old to take classes

Hi! I’m looking for a nice, low pressure, non competitive dance studio for my daughter to start classes. She’s a beginner, apart from ballet at 4 which doesn’t count lol, but she’s a natural. My biggest concern is I want it to be a positive experience that builds her up, not one that will end up causing her stress. Any recommendations are appreciated! TIA!

Dance Studio Recommendations for a beginner?

Posted by Mangoop_ · in r/AskLosAngeles · 1 year ago

Hello! Going to LA in a few weeks so i decided to put 'taking a dance class' on my bucket list. I'm not a crazy good dancer and im still getting used to moving my body so energy and rapid movement lacks a lot. (had hard time keeping up with peers&teacher when i took a 1million dance class). However, when i look into most beginner classes at the dance studios in LA, the people there look SO GODLY PROFESSIONAL, like, is the beginner in the room with us?? I wanted a beginner class that has easy movement and teaching the basics of hiphop/any dance...ㅠㅠ. Does anyone have recommendations? Thank you so much! Have a great day^^.

Best dance studios in Los Angeles

Key Considerations for Choosing a Dance Studio in Los Angeles:

  1. Styles Offered: Determine what dance styles you are interested in (e.g., ballet, hip-hop, contemporary, jazz, etc.) and look for studios that specialize in those areas.

  2. Instructor Experience: Research the qualifications and experience of the instructors. Experienced teachers can provide better guidance and technique.

  3. Class Levels: Ensure the studio offers classes that match your skill level, whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced dancer.

  4. Location and Accessibility: Consider the studio's location and how easy it is to get there. Proximity can make it easier to attend classes regularly.

  5. Class Size: Smaller class sizes often allow for more personalized attention from instructors, which can enhance your learning experience.

  6. Community and Atmosphere: Visit the studio to get a feel for the environment and community. A positive atmosphere can greatly enhance your dance experience.

Recommended Dance Studios in Los Angeles:

  • Millennium Dance Complex: Known for its wide variety of styles and high-profile instructors, this studio attracts both aspiring dancers and professionals.

  • The Edge Performing Arts Center: Offers a range of classes for all levels and is popular among industry professionals. It has a strong reputation for training dancers for performance careers.

  • LA Dance Academy: Focuses on a nurturing environment with a variety of styles, making it great for both kids and adults.

  • Ballet Academy East: If you’re interested in ballet, this studio has a strong curriculum and experienced instructors.

  • Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio: A historic studio with a rich legacy, offering classes in various styles and catering to all skill levels.

Recommendation: Visit a few studios to take trial classes and see which one resonates with you. The right studio should feel welcoming and inspire you to grow as a dancer.
