What Redditors are Saying

Best Diet for Cats with Sensitive Stomachs

TL;DR

  • Consider prescription diets like Hill's z/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal.
  • Limited ingredient diets can be beneficial, such as Natural Balance or Ziwi Peak.
  • Consult your vet for tailored advice and consider probiotics.

Prescription Diets

Several commenters have found success with prescription diets specifically formulated for cats with sensitive stomachs. Hill’s Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome Digestive/Fiber Care and Hill’s z/d hydrolyzed protein formula are popular choices among pet owners dealing with feline digestive issues [1:5][1:6]. Royal Canin Gastro Moderate Calorie is another recommended option that has helped cats with sensitive stomachs [5:1].

Limited Ingredient Diets

Limited ingredient diets are often suggested for cats with food sensitivities or allergies. These diets typically use a single protein source, which can help identify and eliminate potential allergens. Brands like Natural Balance offer a variety of limited ingredient options [4:11]. Ziwi Peak and Rawz were also mentioned as effective choices, particularly for their lamb, venison, and beef varieties [1:1].

Alternative Protein Sources

For cats that may have sensitivities to common proteins like chicken or beef, alternative protein sources such as rabbit and duck can be beneficial. KOHA wet food with single ingredients like rabbit was highlighted as a successful option [3:1][3:4]. Freeze-dried duck wings and bone meal can also aid in solidifying stool [4:1].

Probiotics and Digestive Aids

Adding probiotics to your cat's diet might improve digestion and reduce symptoms like diarrhea. Probiotics can help balance gut flora and make stools more solid [3:5]. Additionally, avoiding foods with gums and incorporating supplements like s.boulardii may alleviate digestive discomfort [3:7].

Consultation with Veterinarian

It's crucial to consult with a veterinarian when selecting a diet for a cat with a sensitive stomach. Vets can provide personalized recommendations based on your cat's specific needs and health history [5:4]. While some commercial brands like Science Diet and Purina Pro Plan are commonly recommended, it's important to verify their suitability with a professional [2:1][2:4].

Ultimately, finding the right diet for a cat with a sensitive stomach may require some trial and error, but these guidelines can help narrow down the options and lead to better digestive health for your feline friend.

ORIGINAL POST

We were switching our cat to Orijen thinking chicken was the reason for her digestive upset. Now she has the runs, but there is no more blood in her stool. Before she was just have massive poos that were soft and sometimes had blood. The vets have said she’s fine health wise. She has been on PURINA her whole life and is more prone to vomit than our other cat. What is the best sensitive cat food? I’m headed to the pet food store now, something must be done. When I fed her royal canine sensitive wet food she also got there runs. I can’t handle the poopy cat anymore.

Perfect digestion did compared to the old food, meow mix. A month ago we switched from that to RX bc his meds and that weren't cutting it & he's doing better so far after 3 weeks.

I’m trying out Go! Solutions digestive health and see how that goes for my cat, she was previously eating Purina Pro Plan sensitive stomach

How is it working. I put a calm thing by the litter box just in case she’s stressed

She didn’t seem fully into it, I think she’s lucky because she doesn’t like food chunks, has to be pate to fully eat it. I only bought one of that kind for now, I really don’t know how many I should’ve got to test them

Nutritional management of IBD and colitis in pets lists quite a few high quality diets that may be able to help your kitty out !

steer clear of boutique brands as they don’t have the proper experts on staff , aren’t formulated by the proper experts , and don’t have decades of research or feeding trials to back up their foods . sticking to a WSAVA guidelines compliant brand ensures your pet gets the safest and highest quality foods on the market . WSAVA guidelines compliant brands include Purina , IAMS , Hill’s , and Royal Canin !

Our cat with severe IBD does great on Hill’s z/d, which is their prescription hydrolyzed protein formula.

How long has she been on it?

Mine did great for about a year but may have developed a sensitivity - tbh, I'm not sure, but there were mushy poops so I changed food to HA and started on daily probiotics. Am wondering whether I might try her on Z/D again, given she seems to prefer it.

She has been on it for about 3 years I think. In case it makes a difference, she eats dry only (she turned her nose up at the z/d wet).

I believe my cat may have the same issue. Switching him to Hill’s Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome Digestive/Fiber Care food has helped restore the normalcy of his stool.

Gi Biome worked for mine too! I ended up finding non vet food that also worked for mine that were limited ingredient diets. As far as canned food Rawz and Ziwi Peak (lamb, venison, and beef worked for mine) and as for kibble Taste of the Wild Angus Beef for cats worked for mine. Natural Balance Green Pea & Venson worked for 2 out of 3 of my cats.

Cat food recommendations for sensitive stomach?

Posted by SpeakeasyImprov · in r/CatAdvice · 2 years ago

My boy seems to have a sensitive stomach (we've been working with our vet and have ruled out other possibilities and concerns). Anyone here have a cat food they can recommend that's good for easy digestion & absorption? Bonus points for dry food recs, because my boy just seems to prefer that to his wet food.

My cats have been in Hills sensitive stomach chicken flavor for around 6 months now and very rarely get vomit anymore… highly recommend but it’s a bit pricier than cheap stuff. One bag gets me by around 3 months with 2 cats. (Largest bag)

I used to get a lot of vomit with my female cat who was eatting Made by Nacho beef flavor… I don’t think she likes beef but Hills hardly anymore vomit.

Sure. I'm looking for personal recommendations. Did you use one of these for your cat and find that it worked? Like, they ate it, weren't finicky about it, and they gained weight and threw up less when eating it? Like, is there one or another of the ones I could look up that you would say I should try out first?

Ohh my cats don’t have sensitive stomachs, but Science Diet and Purina Pro are the veterinary lines for the brands. However, it’s best to consult with your vet first, though!

Cat food recommendations for sensitive tummy kitty

Posted by Complex_Secretary840 · in r/catfood · 3 months ago

Hi, I’m looking for dry food that is good for cat with a sensitive digestive track. Wet food and some dry food causes my cat to have bad diarrhea with some small amounts of blood in her stool due to straining. I’m wondering if anyone has had this problem and if they have any good recommendations. She likes the chicken + rice pro plan, but that seems to irritate her stomach a bit as well but is the best option I’ve tried so far.

Have you tried the Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach? The chicken & rice was recommended by my vet for a cat with gastric issues, but if that's not working, maybe the other formula might.

Purina one dry works better for my sensitive stomach girl than pro plan dry. Purina One Sensitive Stomach is what she gets for dry. Pro plan turkey and giblets in gravy is the only wet she can have so far without diarrhea.

My sensitive tummy boy does really good on Hill’s Food sensitivities z/d + some KOHA wet food with one ingredient (usually rabbit). He had vomiting and diarrhea on and off for years, I tried an insane amount of different foods and now he is doing extremely well with the z/d!

Even if it doesn’t work, don’t give up! it might not be the solution for your cat but other food can work! It took me years to find a food for my cat that didn’t give him any issues.

2 upvotes on reddit
Complex_Secretary840 · OP · 3 months ago

Thank you! I’ve heard that rabbit is good for sensitive tummy kitties, was considering trying that as well

3 upvotes on reddit
mmorells · 3 months ago

Yeah! Her sensitivity can come form allergies/intolerance to some food so it might be worth trying food with a single new protein she never had. Rabbit is indeed a good option!

Another thing you can add to her diet is probiotics if you didn’t try. At worst, it will no change a thing but it might help to make her poop more solid.

Cat food recommendation for sensitive stomach

Posted by oagait · in r/CatAdvice · 2 years ago

Hi everyone! I have a 9 months old kitty who has mucus in her stool recently - she’s healthy now but vet said this is likely due to her having feline parvo when she was younger (~3-4 months) which impacted her GI. Not a red flag but it would be great for her to be on food for sensitive stomach so it’s easier on her digestion.

I’ve been researching online of course but would love to hear if anyone has recommendations on commercial wet & dry food suitable for a kitty with sensitive stomach.

Current wet food: Nulo Medalseries Current dry food: Orijen Kitten She’s also on prescribed probiotics

Thanks!

i had a science diet food, my cat loved it but he threw up ALL the time. i don't remember what ingredient was in it, but it was something that helped cause it. i now switched to solid gold winged tiger and he does way better with it.

How did you find out that it was the one ingredient that was the cause for your kitty? I have a 9-year-old who was puking 4 times per week. I started with elevated bowls for him and his brother, switched him to Royal Canin Gastrointestinal dry & wet, and he gets famotidine daily. Now we're down to puking maybe 1-2 times every 2-3 weeks. But I'm wondering, since it is still somewhat persistent, if it might be the food -- but I have no clue where to start with ingredients or an elimination diet for him. The Royal Canin seems OK, but it is so costly over time.

Just a heads up: It's owned by Colgate-Palmolive and your vet is financially incentivized to push it. It's filled with low quality protein and lots of low quality grain filler such as corn and brewers rice. Purina, Hills, Royal Canin are massive corporations that only care about profit. (Nestle owns Purina, Mars owns Royal Canin). A broken clock is right twice a day, and you may have found a specific formula that works well for your little ones stomach, but generally these foods are low quality and overpriced and survive off vet recommendations.

My boy has a very sensitive stomach and he's done well on the Go! wet foods that don't have chicken, beef, or grains. I feed the lamb and boar, salmon, and duck varieties. For dry food, I feed either Ziwi or Orijen, the fish variety, as most hard foods have one of his sensitivities. He now has solid stool and doesn't vomit all the time.

Based on this post, I looked up the Go! Wet foods (my boy has a sensitive stomach too) and found the lamb & wild boar does have chicken broth in it, so just a heads up. Chicken is one of Nick's sensitivities too. The salmon looks interesting though and I might have to try that. My guy is also sensitive to turkey and tuna, so I feel you on the challenge of finding the right foods!

1 upvotes on reddit
A
Anrikay · 2 years ago

That's what's so weird about it! It's the only food with chicken he can tolerate, no idea why but it seems to work for him. He can't eat their chicken or turkey ones, but boar with chicken is fine. The duck one does only use duck broth as well, and many cats sensitive to chicken and turkey can eat duck.

I also feed freeze dried duck wings a couple of times per week, that probably helps a bit too by giving them extra bone. I know bone meal can help solidify stool as well.

Sensitive tummy/food intolerance wet food recommends

My little Turkey goober almost died as a kitten. He was found in a dumpster with his siblings and they thrived quickly but he did not. He threw up ALL of his food and went downhill fast. He couldn’t keep food in his system and was teeny and skinny. The rescue who supported him had many tests run and he even went to a vet school for testing. They found he couldn’t eat chicken or turkey. He can eat duck, rabbit, and (sometimes) some types of fish.

When I fostered him, he stopped eating rabbit, which is the food the vet wanted him on. He still threw up almost daily and began refusing food. I kept a detailed journal of what he ate and if he threw up. He’d look better and I would get him ready to adopt out at an event and he’d tank. Eventually, I fell in love and kept him.

I went on a mission to get him healthy. We did probiotics three times a day and for over a year he’s only had Purina pro plan sensitive skin and tummy artic char and duck pate food and a tiny bit of the purina pro plan sensitive skin and tummy kibble. He’s now over 2 years old and he’s thriving!

However, the cost of that food was gone way up. I’m spending over $100 a month on his wet food and he’s blowing my budget big time. He’s been sneaking some of my dogs’ food and some of my food here and there and has done ok (my hounds also have poultry allergies 🙄).

I think he’s ready to try some new wet food and I think will tolerate it. He goes to the vet for his annual Monday and I’m going to discuss it with them. But I wanted to know if any of you have found success with other brands of sensitive tummy food, and if so, which ones have been good options? I wanted to compile some ideas to discuss at the vet Monday.

Thank you!!

Cats having sensitive stomach issues, need suggestions for food.

Posted by makkutu · in r/CatAdvice · 4 months ago

Hello, i have four adult male cats. Two of them are currently have loose stool and one has had bad sensitive stomach issues in the past but i dont think hes currently having loose stool. Its hard to tell which poop is who's with four cats though.

Currently this is their feeding schedule

Breakfast is each cat gets one half of a purina pro plan salmon complete essentials 5.5oz can (so 2.75oz each) Dinner is 1/4 cup of purina one plus sensitive stomach adult dry food. Then i put some of the purina pro plan dental health kibbles on top of that. And i recently switched them to a new topper (i use to use the tiki cat broths topper, spliting a pack of that on two plates) the instinct healthy cravings grain free topper splitting one pack on all four of their plates.

So I've tried switching to different brands of both dry and wet food over the past year trying to find something that suits all four cats litter box wise. Maybe its not the food but all of the different foods they eat everyday? Should i try to narrow down what they eat?

I use to give my cats one pack each of the instinct healthy cravings packs for their wet food breakfast not realizing it was a food topper and not a meal years ago. Maybe i can go back to doing this for their breakfast and then for dinner still use one as a topper for all four dry food dinners?

They also get greenies dental and indoor health treats daily.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Probiotics are a good idea. Our original vet gave us Purina FortiFlora when our kittens were on antibiotics. It helped.

We switched to Fera Pets brand from Chewy later on, simply because one of my cats didn't love the taste of the FortiFlora. They prefer that, and eat it sprinkled over their wet food without complaints.

Food recommendations for kitties with a sensitive stomach?

Hello, I’m so glad this sub exists. My cat is in the early stages of kidney disease and the vet is recommending that he be placed on a kidney friendly diet asap.

My cat has a really sensitive stomach, seems to do well with chicken but less so with fish, and we are currently feeding him the Weruva cats in the kitchen wet food (chicken varieties) with blue Buffalo sensitive stomach dry food. He seems to like the mix and also likes the variety in various flavors of wet foods. I’m willing to spend the money on anything really, but if anyone has any suggested meal plans for cats in early stage and with sensitive stomachs, PLEASE share.

He may have an upset stomach.

Cerenia worked wonderfully for my boy. It's injectable or can be given orally either with pillshooter or dissolved in oral syringe. Break tablet in half, put pieces in oral syringe with warm water and shake vigorously to dissolve.

Got transdermal Mirtaz to put in his ear - Mirtaz is an appetite stimulant and mild nausea preventer. Cerenia is a step up from Mirtaz to treat nausea.

For treats I give Delectables Bisque 15yr+ Kidney Support Wet Cat Treats - Tuna & Chicken, 1.4 Ounce (Pack of 12) https://a.co/d/gQB0l0c or Hartz Delectables Stew Senior 15yrs+ Kidney support Wet Cat Treats, Chicken & Tuna, 1.4 Ounce (Pack of 12) https://a.co/d/7tPZVbl

The Stew has chunks of real meat, the Bisque has meat blended/ground up. They love them both though I have one cat that doesn't like the chunks of meat in the Stew (eats around them) but wolfs down the Bisque.

Perhaps you could use one of those to coat his Prescription food?

My guys seem to love Hill's i/d dry for sensitive digestive systems. The wet version they'll eat but less enthusiastically, they definitely prefer dry.

Pretty kitty!

You might check out the food data tables from the Tanya CKD website. There's info for both rx and non-rx foods. It explains on the page but the phosphorus level listed is often the primary driver in food selections. If his stomach does better with certain proteins you could look for varieties of those flavors with lower phosphorus. If he's in early stages then selecting some lower phosphorus foods that his tummy agrees with might be all he needs right now.

I’m just starting out with my cat too. Are you going onto prescription diet? Mine doesn’t really like any of the prescription diets so I’m doing a slow transition. He seems to like the best Hills (if he had to pick I guess lol). I’d see if you can get written prescriptions then try different ones. Some my cat smelled and was like “nope.” Others he took a bite or lick or two but then walked away “this is not what I ordered.” So I’ve started doing the transition method to trick him into it.

I’d also talk to your vet but sensitive stomach can be totally related to kidney disease so getting him on the prescriptions might help. I also heard they can have Pepcid ac but I need to ask more questions about it. Actually found this sub to look at peoples interactions with slipper elm bark but still doing research.

best diet for cats with sensitive stomachs

Key Considerations for Cats with Sensitive Stomachs:

  1. Limited Ingredient Diets: Choose diets with fewer ingredients to reduce the risk of food sensitivities. Look for high-quality protein sources (like chicken or fish) and avoid fillers.

  2. Easily Digestible Proteins: Opt for diets that contain easily digestible proteins, such as chicken, turkey, or fish, which are less likely to upset your cat's stomach.

  3. Grain-Free Options: Some cats are sensitive to grains. Grain-free diets can help, but ensure they still provide balanced nutrition.

  4. Probiotics and Prebiotics: Foods with added probiotics can support gut health and improve digestion. Look for brands that include these beneficial ingredients.

  5. Hydration: Ensure your cat stays hydrated, as dehydration can exacerbate digestive issues. Wet food can be a good option for increasing water intake.

  6. Avoid Sudden Changes: Transition to a new diet gradually over 7-10 days to prevent digestive upset. Mix increasing amounts of the new food with the old food.

Recommended Diets:

  • Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin: Formulated specifically for sensitive stomachs, it includes prebiotic fiber for digestive health.
  • Royal Canin Digestive Care: This diet is designed to support digestive health and is well-tolerated by many cats with sensitive stomachs.
  • Blue Buffalo Basics: A limited ingredient diet that is grain-free and contains a single animal protein source, making it suitable for sensitive cats.

Recommendation: Consult your veterinarian before making any dietary changes to ensure the chosen diet meets your cat's specific health needs. They may also recommend a prescription diet if your cat has severe sensitivities or underlying health issues.
