What Redditors are Saying

Why is My Cat Throwing Up?

TL;DR

  • Common causes include eating too quickly, food allergies, hairballs, or underlying health issues like kidney disease.
  • Consult a vet for persistent vomiting to rule out serious conditions.

Common Causes of Vomiting

Cats may vomit due to several reasons including eating too quickly, food allergies, or gastrointestinal issues. For instance, one user mentioned their cat vomited undigested food which could be due to fast eating [2:1]. Another common cause is food allergies, which can take time to diagnose and may require trying different diets [1:3].

Health Concerns

Persistent vomiting could indicate more serious health issues such as acid reflux, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or even kidney disease. One commenter suggested that prolonged vomiting might lead to acid reflux, requiring medication like Prilosec [1:1]. Kidney disease was also highlighted as a potential cause of nausea and vomiting [5:1].

Dietary Adjustments

Changing your cat's diet can sometimes alleviate vomiting. For example, avoiding certain proteins like beef, which some cats are sensitive to, may help [1:2]. Additionally, feeding smaller, more frequent meals can prevent gorging and reduce vomiting [2:1].

Veterinary Advice

It's crucial to consult a veterinarian if your cat's vomiting persists. An abdominal ultrasound or specialized blood tests may be necessary to identify the root cause [1:3][5:10]. If initial treatments don't work, a second opinion from another vet can provide new insights [5:1].

Environmental Factors

Consider any recent changes in your home environment that could affect your cat. New plants, cleaning chemicals, or other substances could potentially lead to poisoning, resulting in vomiting [5:9].

In summary, while occasional vomiting may not be alarming, persistent or severe cases warrant veterinary attention to ensure your cat's health and well-being.

ORIGINAL POST

9 years old and otherwise healthy, including his weight. He has been to the vet about it multiple times, and has even had extended stays with them so they can try and catch him at it. He never threw up while there, and they have never found any problems with examinations and stuff.

He throws up almost every meal, usually close to after he finishes eating. I have thought maybe he was eating too fast and a slow feeder would help, but the slow feeder didn't change anything, he still threw up after.

The vet suggested it could be allergies and gave me allergy friendly food to try, but he still threw up with that and no allergies were found. He is an only cat and has no obvious stressers.

He has been doing this pretty much his entire life. I dunno what else it could be, I'm going insane trying to stop it. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please share.

The only weird thing about him is that he hates wet food and only eats dry. He will literally rather starve than eat wet food. But he ate only dry food at the vet so i don't know if that even has anything to do with it.

I have a barfer, too. My vet gave her a steroid shot that stopped it for a few months. It's worn off now and she's back to barfing every few days. She gets dry food that's predominantly salmon - it's one of the Purina varieties. I give her one Sheba wet food a day with a probiotic sprinkled mixed in. I'm taking her back to the vet soon. He suspected she has IBS so next step is to try medication. He did tell me to stop giving her beef foods - apparently a lot of cats can be sensitive to it.

I work in vet med with cats only. This is a LOT of vomiting! I highly recommend an abdominal ultrasound, regular comprehensive bloodwork, and a specialized GI blood panel done through Texas A&M. If you have a cat-only vet in your area, go there. Food allergies are common in cats, but they can take quite a while to figure out. Sometimes you have to try several diets until you find the right one. It’s extremely important these diets are fed exclusively for a minimum of 6-8 weeks before trying a different one if it didn’t help. During this period of time, you can’t feed literally anything else, even a single piece of kibble or treat that’s any other brand. It defeats the purpose of the special elimination diet. Examples of these diets include Royal Canin Selected Protein (ex. Pea & Rabbit), Royal Canin Ultamino, Hill’s z/d, and Rayne-MAINT.

With all that constant vomiting, he's got reflux now and the valve at the top of the stomach is probably inflamed and doesn't close properly so food comes back up more easily. I developed bad reflux and food would just come right back up. I had to go on a fairly long course of prilosec to heal that valve so I wouldn't have reflux or vomiting any more. Prilosec can be given to cats. We had to give it to our senior kitty. She had bad reflux and ibd. She was on prilosec for several months. We had to take her off of kibble because it was making her IBD worse. You may have to wean your guy off of kibble too or try one for sensitive tummies. But for right now, he needs meds for his GERD.

TMI warning! Cat keeps throwing up (a lot).

I need an opinion. What could cause our cat to throw up all of a sudden? We didn't change his diet and he keeps throwing up. He eats and drinks plenty of water. We have two more cats and they don't have any issues.

I disagree with the above user, over eating and vomiting produces undigested food vomit. Your cats vomit is digested. There are too many causes to list that could produce the frequency and try of vomit you are seeing, a vet visit is warranted, and I would try to get in today or tomorrow.

2 upvotes on reddit
truespaceship · OP · 7 months ago

I'll call the office today then. I wanted to ask here first because I tend to overreact and take my cats in with every little thing just to find out that they're being dramatic. I just couldn't believe a cat could vomit this much. I'm not sure if it's visible, but it looked like a human size puke. And I'm not sure if that matters, but the smell was absolutely horrible. I keep an eye on him today. He always sleeps and eats a lot. I noticed he drinks more today and goes to the litter box frequently. No diarrhea.

Few questions:

When did the vomiting start? Does he vomit after every meal, or occasionally? Does he vomit everyday, or a few times a week?

1 upvotes on reddit
truespaceship · OP · 7 months ago

First time on Wednesday, the second time today. Both times, it happened at night when we were sleeping, but they have constant access to dry food, so I'm not sure if it happened right after feeding or not.

Often times we can see cats vomiting like this due to eating too quickly or their digestive system has slowed down for one reason or the other and things are getting backed up—hair balls, GI upset etc.

I would suggest restricting access to food and only feeding him his allotted calories per day, I would feed him in several meals so he isn’t gorging himself to see if this helps.

If this doesn’t not help, or things get worse i.e. vomiting increases, he is not wanting to eat, or having diarrhea I would have him seen asap.

My cat has been throwing up…

Posted by Difficult-Head-3675 · in r/CATHELP · 14 days ago

We have a scheduled vet appointment tomorrow, but I’m just worried sick over my cat.

He’s thrown up for the past 3 days id say, At first it was an orange/brown color. Not a lot of throw up. He gags like he’s got a hair ball before.

Only about once a day.

I originally thought it was maybe the wet food, so we have had him off of wet food for 24 hours, and we thought he was in the clear, but I I turned and seen him throw up again. (This time the throw up was a little darker.) picture below. One with and without flash. The piles are small

He’s still very playful, he’s eats food, doesn’t seem to have changed behavior. - his gums are pink and retain color.

Emesis is dark but can't tell if there is any blood in it. You are feeding your cat Friskies wet food?.

Could the stomach be upset for some reason. You might watch and observe for a while. Sometimes, these things run their course.

But please take your cat to the vet if it worsens.

That appears to be bile mixed with stomach contents. The cat should go to the vet. I had a cat that did that and seemed ok for a week then got worse over 2 days. I rushed him to the vet and after surgery to remove a hair ball stuck in his pyloric sphincter ($2500 and 1 week at the vet). The vet said if I had waited one more day the resulting systemic infection and lack of nourishment would have be beyond treatment. I also have another cat who threw up after eating. It was I undigested food. Turned out to be a thyroid issue. Either way, vet immediately!

Cat keeps throwing up for the last 5 days?

Posted by NorthEdThraway · in r/catcare · 2 years ago

My wifes 12 year old ragdoll has been throwing up for at least 5 days now, once a day.

It usually happens when we're either not home or asleep.

It's dark green, the first one had a lot of food chunks in it but now just a bit, the first one also smelled...like poop. No evidence of hairballs.

No change of food other than a new can flavour every few days(friskies).

We recently noticed that both our cats don't seem to be eating much of their soft food, but do eat the hard food.

Haven't really observed her going to the litterbox but at least one of them has been there and we change it once a week.

Both their behaviours seem normal, the sleep, they cuddle with us a bit, they visit us in bed at night, get plenty of water.

The sick one spends a lot of time outside in our backyard, but mostly just sits on a padded chair and sleeps.

Could it just be a bad batch of friskies? I would think if she was actually sick she would be lethargic and hiding away but shes not.

My kitten had the same problem 2 days ago. Turns out she had a bad case of gas and intestinal distension from overeating. She refused wet food but went crazy eating dry food and treats. I think the new food is giving your cat some tummy issues. Please get her to the vet and keep us updated.

Hopefully, your cat just revealed himself as a puker.

Cat throwing up/ not eating (already been to vet)

Posted by emmegoesbymeme · in r/CATHELP · 2 months ago

My cat meep has been throwing up for the past few days. The first night he threw up so much it began with what looked to still be chunks of food and then foamy clear liquid about 15 spots. I thought maybe it was the food he was eating so I went to go get him some wet food that he’s eaten in the past, because I know it didn’t make him throw up ever before. He then threw up a few hours later. I decided to take him to the vet yesterday because he began to refuse food that he loves, and he is very gluttonous so this was concerning. The vet was not very kind and basically gaslit me into thinking it was just the food change but as I said I CHANGED THE FOOD AFTER HE THREW UP 15 TIMES. she did blood work and said it was normal except his kidney levels looked a little high so he needs to start drinking more water. I was like ok? so what about the fact he WONT EAT. she administered an anti nausea shot and sent me home with two prescriptions for nausea. As well as a can of gasto canned food. He barely ate any of the food when we got home. He also had a bit of diarrhea but mixed in with a solid turd? I’m sure it’s just from the stress. I’m frustrated because she gave me no inclination as to what could be causing this. He’s drinking water this morning but still not eating and as i said this is not like him. he loves food. he’s still acting himself except for some occasional random loafing (as if his stomach is upset). I think this may be why she dismissed my concern and blamed me because he loves the vet and was acting very normal and lovely towards her. i’m like yes he’s acting like himself but i want to catch what is going on before he stops being able to act like himself, which is obviously going to happen if he doesn’t eat ):

He might just have eaten something odd that upset his stomach. Not eating for a day isn't ideal, but can be a direct result of the belly ache. I'm sure you don't like eating when you're nauseous.

I would recommend keeping an eye on him, and keep feeding the food he usually eats, don't add new stuff. If he's still refusing food tomorrow, take him in for a 2nd option.

Kidney disease can cause nausea and vomiting, lack of appetite, and diarrhea. It can also cause lethargy. I agree that he needs at least a second opinion from a different vet, preferably in another location. Ask for a copy of his blood work if they didn't give it to you already to show the new vet.

Give him the nausea medicine 1 to 2 hours before a meal unless specified differently on the label from the vet. Try feeding him frequent small meals. Keep him in your room as much as possible to lower his stress level.

Did the vet check his teeth? My cat was acting the same way, and it turned out that he needed several teeth removed.

It sounds like you're doing a great job helping him.

I’m not sure about your cat, but my older cat was having pukes just like those (but on carpet☹️). His veterinarian was very concerned (I emailed her pictures) and she did an ultrasound on his belly. She found a growth and did more tests and it turned out to be small cell lymphoma in his intestines. The treatment isn’t too expensive, just some pills or liquid that I give him every day (same stuff) So far he’s fine but he’s starting to lose weight again. He was pretty much given 2-3 years after this diagnosis.

We also switched his diet to a prescription food that’s easy on the stomach.

I hope that this isn’t what your cat has, but when I saw the picture of the puke and the 2-3 week frequency, it just seems very familiar.

Good luck!

Also, cats should not eat mostly dry food. In fact dry food is like a snack, like chips for humans. Not really healthy. Eating too much of it can cause stomach problems. If the dry food contains grains, you have your answer - cats do not properly process grains and should not eat food containing it. Cats should eat wet food with a high meat content. They are carnivores after all.

It can just be an upset stomach. Cats are greedy, they eat more than they should often :) You can now only wait until the vet is open. The cat will probably get some anti-nausea medicine then and it will be alright.

Is it an outdoor cat? If you let the cat out it might be a more serious issue, like poisoning or an allergic reaction to something. Check if the vomit contains blood, also check the cat's litter if there are any worms or blood in there.

Also check if you have any poisonous plants at home, the cat might have eaten some and got a food poisoning.

Posted by Ryan_says_words · in r/catcare · 6 months ago

So he's always thrown up for pretty much his whole life but it seems like he just eats too fast. Whether it's wet food or dry food when he throws up it's never accompanied by blood or any signs of pain. I think he's just anxious and overactive. If u have any thoughts or home remedies if really appreciate your input!

After vet has ruled things out and it persists, I highly recommend splitting up your cats daily amount of food into many small, frequent portions.

My cat would throw up from eating too fast if he hadn’t eaten for 12 hours. He now gets 5 small portions of food a day— no problems.

I think you're right. He gets wet and dry food every day. Should I cut 1 or the other out? Or just manage the portions better? This is the 1st cat I've had that I've ever given wet (canned) food for so maybe only a good dry food..

Keep both dry and wet but divide them into smaller portions. You basically want to prevent your cat from inhaling an amount of food that’s too much for him too quickly which then causes him to throw up.

Wet food is way healthier for cats than dry! And more filling. So definitely don’t cut it out.

The way I currently do it is dry food from an automatic feeder 3 times a day, and then wet food 2 times a day.

I have to split one bag of wet food into 3 small portions and feed them in a span of 1-2 hours or my little void would eat too fast

Try sprinkling Forti Flora probiotic on his food. My food sensitive cats were vomiting daily before I started the Forti Flora. Now they vomit maybe once every two weeks. I also use it for diarrhea for my neonate foster kittens. Most cats love the taste. You can get on Amazon.

A slow feeder cat bowl helps my cat’s scarf & barf situation. They’re a pain to clean, but so is daily vomit

If your regular vet has no answers, you can ask for a referral to a veterinary gastroenterologist (GI).

But get pet insurance before any diagnosis if you don’t already have it because they can deny claims for preexisting conditions. You can get it online in minutes.

A trip to the vet.

Throwing up every day is way out of the realm of normal.

Most cats really love the taste. Good luck with your kitty.

Bloodwork and imaging at the vet asap. Get them to check his digestive system specifically with the imaging. We lost a cat to stomach cancer and her only symptom at first was daily vomiting, both food and on an empty stomach

Why is my cat throwing up

Key Considerations for Cat Vomiting:

  1. Dietary Issues:

    • Eating Too Fast: Cats that eat quickly may vomit due to swallowing air. Consider using a slow feeder.
    • Food Sensitivities: Some cats may have allergies or intolerances to certain ingredients. Switching to a hypoallergenic diet may help.
  2. Hairballs:

    • Long-haired breeds are more prone to hairballs, which can cause vomiting. Regular grooming and hairball control diets can reduce this issue.
  3. Health Problems:

    • Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or infections can lead to vomiting.
    • Organ Problems: Kidney disease, liver issues, or pancreatitis may also cause vomiting.
  4. Stress or Anxiety:

    • Changes in the environment, new pets, or other stressors can lead to vomiting. Providing a stable environment may help.
  5. Toxins or Foreign Objects:

    • Ingesting toxic substances or foreign objects can cause vomiting. If you suspect this, seek veterinary attention immediately.

Takeaways:

  • Monitor your cat's vomiting frequency and any accompanying symptoms (like lethargy, diarrhea, or changes in appetite).
  • If vomiting persists (more than once or twice in a short period), or if your cat shows other concerning symptoms, consult a veterinarian for a thorough examination and diagnosis.
  • Keeping a record of your cat's diet, behavior, and any changes can help your vet determine the cause more effectively.
