Best Electric Guitars for Beginners

TL;DR

  • Yamaha Pacifica: Versatile and affordable [1][2:1][5:9]
  • Squier by Fender: Consistent quality, good starter packs available [1:1][2:1][5:3]
  • Epiphone Les Paul: Great value, easy to play [5:3][5:6]

Popular Beginner Models

The Yamaha Pacifica is frequently recommended due to its versatility and affordability. It features both single-coil and humbucker pickups, allowing beginners to explore a range of tones from clean to more distorted sounds [5:2][5:4]. The Squier by Fender series, particularly the Stratocaster models, are also popular among beginners for their consistent quality and playability [1:1][2:1]. The Epiphone Les Paul is another great option, known for its ease of play and solid build quality [5:3].

Considerations for Smaller Players

For those with smaller hands or stature, such as someone who is 4'11", it may be beneficial to consider guitars with thinner necks or shorter scale lengths. Brands like Ibanez and Jackson offer models with thin necks that might be more comfortable for smaller players [1:2]. Additionally, the Squier Bullet Mustang is suggested for its manageable size and weight [5:6].

Starter Packs vs. Individual Purchases

While starter packs can be convenient, providing everything needed to start playing, some users recommend purchasing guitars and amps separately to ensure better quality equipment [1:9]. For instance, pairing a Squier Affinity Strat with a more modern practice amp like the Fender Mustang LT25 can offer greater flexibility and sound quality [1:9].

Testing Before Buying

Trying out guitars in-store is highly recommended to ensure comfort and playability. This allows beginners to get a feel for different models and find one that suits their personal preferences [1:6]. However, if visiting a store isn't possible, watching online reviews and tutorials can provide valuable insights into what to look for in a beginner guitar [1:12].

Amp Recommendations

When selecting an amp, many suggest starting with a small practice amp that includes a headphone jack for quiet practice. Brands like Marshall and Fender offer reliable options at reasonable prices [5:5]. Alternatively, using amp simulation software on a computer can be a cost-effective way to explore different sounds without investing in a physical amp [5:10].

ORIGINAL POST

Hi everyone! After loving it for years, I’ve recently decided I wanted to learn how to play electric guitar. Does this seem like a good beginner guitar? Also, I’m pretty small (4”11) with very small hands, so will I need a smaller guitar or does it not really matter?Let me know, thanks!

What is your budget?, i would go for jackson or ibanez, as their necks are thin. Check out these https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RG421MSPTSP--ibanez-standard-rg421msp-turquoise-sparkle https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JS32DKAHTPB--jackson-js-series-dinky-arch-top-js32q-dka-ht-electric-guitar-transparent-purple-burst https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JS32TRRAWBk--jackson-js-series-rhoads-js32t-white-with-black-bevels https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RG421EXTCM--ibanez-standard-rg421ex-electric-guitar-transparent-crimson-fade-matte https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JS22TOB--jackson-js-series-monarkh-sc-js22-tobacco-burst

The schecter omen elite-6 is about 500bucks, and it's a killer guitar the neck may be not as thin as a jackson js32 but I don't really think you would get any problems playing it, I've got small hands as well, and i'm a schecter fan boy myself, the omen deluxe is way cheaper but again the neck may not be super thin as a reaper-6 which is way more expensive but still it is not chunky by any means

swampboy12 · 3 years ago

I was also going to recommend a schecter. I started on an omen-6, the slightly cheaper model of what you're recommending, and it was still a great first guitar.

Don't know about the others but I bought the Jackson js32 as my second electric and I love it. Super good price, nice tone, very playable neck, and the Jackson branded Floyd roses that come installed work perfect to hold it in tune across multiple practice sessions. Wish it had been my first guitar tbh

There are some brands I'd avoid as a beginner because sounding crappy even when good technique is being used can be discouraging. Those squier by fender budget beginner guitars that come with an amp? Get those for someone that you want to play the drums instead lol

Edit: squier by fender

I cannot stress this enough, it is not a good idea to buy your first guitar online, please, if you can go to a guitar store, go. Ask one of the employees if you can play one of the guitars that catches your eye, and be comfortable with the guitar. Play for as long as you need to. If you get the wrong guitar when your first starting out it might urge you to quit, its always better to test drive the instrument before you buy. Try to make a checklist for what your looking in a guitar, if one day you find a guitar that checks all your boxes, there you go. But most people do in fact start out on those bullet squires and yamaha pacificas anyway. Make sure you’re comfortable with it tho if thats what you decide.

I bought my first guitar online, because I really was a complete beginner. I would not have known how to try and select an instrument in the shop. So I decided by looks and budget and bought a Squier.

I'd agree with this. I played a half dozen guitars and a couple I was really interested in were very disappointing. I wound up buying a Squier Telecaster Thinline, knew it was tight when I played it.

TheOneTrueRandy · 3 years ago

Those guitars are pretty good for the price point, but I am naturally biased to prefer Squiers for that price level.

This is everything you need to start jamming and only a little more than the pacifica but comes with an amp and case. The pacifica is probably a little better quality than this model, but doesnt come with the goodies:

Squier Stratocaster Electric Guitar Pack With Squier Frontman 10G Amp Brown Sunburst

This next one is more comparable in quality to the pacifica and also has a humbucker, which is the best feature of the pacifica over my previous suggestion in my opinion. Also comes with an even better amp than the first one, but the price notches up a bit, but worth it. Better guitar and amp with this choice:

Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar Pack with Fender Frontman 15G Amp Brown Sunburst

This next one is a great option because it is actually a slightly smaller scale than the full size options bouncing around here. Does not come with an amp in this case, but being a smaller sized human myself the slightly smaller scale makes a huge difference, great for learning but depending on if you are still growing you might still opt for a full scale guitar, because in the long run that is probably the size you will end up with. The scale length is 24" compared to the common scale length of 25.5" on most of the suggestions you will get:

Squier Bullet Mustang HH Limited-Edition Electric Guitar Olympic White

If you put a gun to my head and made me pick a guitar in this price range this is what I would pick personally. I think it looks cool and the double humbuckers are pretty much required for what I play. This one also does not come with the amp:

Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster HH Electric Guitar Olympic White

The first two options are the best values you are going to find based on quality, features and the fact they are everything you need to get started. The third is great if your small frame is a factor in your comfort while playing/learning. The 4th option is more or less what you get with the second option, just a different pickup combination and not with a bundle. Personally my opinion is the yamaha is trying to be a fender, squier is made by fender. The quality is pretty much the same, its just my feeling is that why buy the third best option when you can buy the second best option. Without knowing your exact budget and only sticking with the price point of your original choice these are what I recommend. If you were planning on spending 500 or more I would scrap basically this whole list and make a new list to reflect your budget. I own 15 guitars, 3 of them squires, two of them fenders and it is my go to choice. I wont insult yamaha directly and say they suck, they really are comparable, but i would never own one myself.

Awesome thanks so much! All the guitars on this list look really great and definitely in my price range. I’d say, for now, the farthest I’m willing to go is about $500. Thanks so much for helping me out and making this list it’s such a big help.

11 upvotes on reddit
ReallyBigRocks · 3 years ago

Just as an aside, personally I would avoid the starter packs that come with an amp. Having everything you need to get started is nice, but the Frontman amps those come with are not great to say the least.

You might be better off getting the Affinity Strat and looking into a different, more modern practice amp. Something like the Fender Mustang LT25 or a similar modelling amp. It's got a lot of different effects and amp models so you can experiment a little and figure out the sort of things you like.

Your first set of gear is never going to completely satisfy you, so I think it's best to go into it with the mindset of trying to find the things that work for you so you know what you want when it's time to upgrade.

UnreasonableCletus · 3 years ago

I would second this list, I've never played a bad squire Strat ( it's probably the most consistent inexpensive guitar ) If the neck size is an issue and or, you could spend a bit more I would look at Epiphone ( Les Paul studio or SG ) because I prefer the neck and humbuckers.

Agreed, i never actually bought my first guitar my dad introduced me to guitar, and when i got enough money to buy one i did. So i dont actually know what thats like, and a beginner probably wouldnt know what to look for in a guitar at first either, but then again theres yt vids out there like one guy’s channel is Darrel Braun guitar or something like that and he made a video on what to look for in a guitar

Im looking to buy an electric guitar but i’m new to the instrument so nothing too extravagant and expensive but one that is good and will last a while. Ive been looking online and saw some beginner kits for like £140ish and was wondering whether they are good for beginners (if you have any recommendations please let me know).

Used can be a good idea but might require you to do some adjustments which will lead to a better understanding of the instrument. If you don't like to tinker and just want to focus on learning how to play the instrument then new might be better but may still require some adjustments that can be some relatively cheap by a professional...then again so would used. Something to consider at least.

  • Yamaha Pacifica

Buy the one that you like the sound, but most importantly, the one that feels more comfortable

Best Beginner's Electric Guitar

I think this is great for a beginner such as myself, because it is affordable and easy to work with! I like the fact that this kit has so many helpful tools included, even mini amp and accessories, allowing you to get started right out of the box!

https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Accessories-Beginner-Starter-Package/dp/B005JPWNVU/

You can always get a pro to help tweak it, but you can definitely do basic setup/tuning on your own, and within minutes be jamming away! I noticed some fret buzz, and usually any new instrument will need a few adjustments, so I will most likely find a tutorial to assist.

I love that the neck is not so wide; I have small hands. I also like that the action is much easier and I'm no longer straining to fret, like with my acoustic. Because of that alone my speed and agility went up drastically, and I enjoy playing so much more now; and more likely to stick with it.

Thanking the people behind this great beginner electric guitar, and for making it affordable for newbies! I'll give updates later!

Dont forget some picks, a cable, and some new strings, ernie ball rock and rolls or ernie ball super slinkys are great for all around strings, a use Gig-snakes for my cables, and Jim Dunlop makes some incredible picks

Yamaha Pacifica

13 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 6 years ago

Had this as my 1st guitar as did other friends of mine. Yamaha makes great stuff. And Yamaha is versatile having both single and humbuckers.

As far as amp I would say a cheap practice with headphone jack. Something big enough that won’t be prob to play w a drum would be nice but you don’t want to spend much or have something heavy... so I think it’s better to get something weak volume wise than spend too much on shit amp. Also I think people overestimate how loud they need amp to be. People buy huge amps and then never turn volume dial past 4 . A tiny can be good enough to play w a drum.

It can be nice having some fx. But avoid too many features. Have known line 6 amps with features out the wazoo that make them a pain to use. Don’t think of them as selling points. Less is more.

Look at online reviews for reliability but I wouldn’t expect much reliability or difference at the low end.

Don’t worry about first amp sounding good. If you get serious about playing you’ll prob want to buy a nice tube ~$700. First amp should just be a cheap amp that you can plug headphones into and might continue to use for that purpose after you get nicer amp.

3 upvotes on reddit
raden9 · 6 years ago

Pacifica has a gorgeous clean tone, with that humbucker on the bridge for some sexy les paul-ish tones.

Line 6 is kinda crap

I got a nice blues jr tube for 540€ and im loving it

Invest in a decent amp. Unfortunately I don't know too much about good amps at lower prices but I think Marshall and fender have some decent stuff at reasonable prices. Squier strats (classic vibe?) are nice enough and make sure you get someone at the shop to adjust the guitar for you, lowering the strings for example. You can play around with it for a few days then bring it back and they'll do all that stuff for you. It makes such a big difference to how you feel with your guitar, and don't hesitate to try out different string gauges as well (personally recommend elixir 10:46, they last so long).

ThiChicken · OP · 6 years ago

I don’t have much knowledge on amps, so your info on it helped me, even if just a bit! I’ll try having a good relationship with those at the shop so they could help me with the strings. Thanks for yer info

I would suggest either a squier bullet mustang or an epiphone les paul based on the video you shared. If you know anyone who already plays have them go to a shop with you if possible. They'll be able to help you find the best of the bunch

It's nice to be able to play quietly. Soon you'll probably be off to JustinGuitar and will spend lots of time smashing back and fourth between open chords. It's nice to not make the entire house hear you pound away on "one minute changes". So you can play unplugged or into a [headphone amp] (https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/amPlugAC30G2--vox-amplug-2-ac30-headphone-guitar-amp?mrkgcl=28&mrkgadid=3319278805&rkg_id=0&campaigntype=dsa&campaign=aaDSA&adgroup=1669475631%3ADSA%20-%20Product%20-%20Guitar&placement=google&adpos=1t1&creative=282276643090&device=c&matchtype=b&network=g&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8Jz-kMPm4gIVVMDICh1kWgixEAAYASAAEgIUOvD_BwE), or an amp with headphones. So an electric is great to start out. My Pacifica was $200 bucks delivered and is very easy on the fingers compared to my acoustic. This will be an issue to be dealt with starting out. There are a ton of great Squires too along with Epiphone strats. It's just whatever flips your switch and makes you want to play it every night. Have fun with it.

a squier affinity strat was my first and it's still one of the best "feeling" guitars i own and the bridge pickup can sound pretty heavy with the right amp settings (they have hss models too). never had a pacifica but seems like many are vouching for it. go to a local shop and play a few different guitars; the feel of it is the most important especially when you're learning. and like others have said, don't cheap out on an amp

Yamaha Pacificas give you great value for the money and are one of the standard answers for starter guitars.

Also, a mistake a lot of new players make is not having enough money for a decent amp. The ones that come with starter bundles are usually not good. A questionable guitar through a good amp will sound vastly better than a good guitar through a crap amp.

If you list your budget, I am sure a lot of people can give you guitar/amp recommendations in your price range.

Posted by AbbreviationsNo5494 · in r/electricguitar · 3 months ago

Hello everyone! I'm sure you all get this question a hundred times a day, but I was wondering which electric guitar you would recommend for a beginner

I have a decent budget (hopefully under 1k CAD) but I can be flexible if it's really worth it. I played acoustic guitar in highschool a couple years back but I always struggled barre chords because my hands are on the smaller side. I will be relearning mostly everything since it's been a while and I find that electric just appeals to me more.

Any advice or recommendations are greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance 🫶

It's a bit of a cliché but still true: buy the guitar that makes you want to pick it up and play it.

Commonly recommended first guitars include Squier and Yamaha Pacifica for good reason. They can be very playable, low-investment instruments. At your budget, you can reach a little higher if you want. If the Ibanez is the one that you like, it's perfectly fine as a first guitar. I might recommend staying away from Floyd Rose-style tremolos unless you really want one (they're a little more complex), but even then it would work fine if that's what you want. You can look at lower-priced PRS if that works for you, Schecter, and many other makes in that range. From Fender, the Player II series that someone mentioned might not be the same value it used to be, but it's still a very good guitar that you could grow with for a while if it's the one you like.

Thank you so much for responding! My initial choice was the squier mustang just because it has 1.65 inches width plus shorter scale so I thought it might be easier. I think I will go back to the store to try our guitars and see what I like (I was too shy last time), because motivation to actually play is super important. Thank you again!

Was looking for a Canadian guitar and purchased a Godin three weeks ago. Amazing instrument. I love it so much I’m playing between two an five hours every days 😅 I’m a beginner so it’s like five hours of scales in a row and I’m not bored

If you like clean and mildly overdriven sounds: Squier Classic Vibe strat or tele.
If you like classic rock: Epiphone SG or LP standard.
If you like heavier music and 'shreddiing' Ibanez RG421.
If you like divebombs and whammy bar madness RG320.

Go to the store do some research and get what feels and looks good to you. All in all your first guitar should look and feel good to you cuz there is going to be days you dont want to play but if you look at it you should want to pick it up and play it. My first guitar was an orange mexican strat and i sucked but boy did i want to play it

Hey... Don't listen to that other guy..... Don't ignore suggestions on brands... 😂

Check out Jackson guitars for sure though... I own a budget model JS22 DKNY and I love it... Walked it off the showroom floor after I tested it out .. 😎

Paid $199 USD

Lotsa body options with Jackson guitars too... 💪

That to me is a good brand suggestion... 🤷

*EDIT: I see Ibanez was suggested as well ...Bam! 😉

Hey everyone! I’m a current bass player looking to expand my musical palette and teach myself electric guitar. I’ve been looking at Squier and Ibanez. I think I’m going to go with the Ibanez, but I’d like to get some advice on your favorite beginner guitars!

Tele (my preference) or Strat Squier is a good starting point for anything you can imagine playing.

Bottom line it doesn't matter. Any beginner squier or Ibanez will be great for you. Metal id lean toward Ibanez. Classic rock, strat or tele. Tom Morello played the shit out of his telecaster. You can play pretty much anything on a strat. If you're looking to shred/solo then maybe something with a double coil. If you like the idea of Ibanez because it's more unique, that's a great reason! My favorite guitar player plays a thinline custom ibanez. Rock on!

For the money, I’d recommend the classic vibe squier line. I got a nice used one with some upgrades on Reverb for $300 and it is a better guitar than some of the more expensive guitars I’ve had over the years. Lots of options for aftermarket parts and upgrades as well.

The best guitar to start with is the one that gets you. Excited to own it. If you think it looks cool, and you think you look cool playing it, then you will play it more often, and improve faster. What's more important than what guitar you get is getting it set up. Cheap guitars tend to be a little out of whack, taking it to a shop and paying them 50 bucks to calibrate it properly will make your playing journey far more enjoyable.

Thank you, I’m most likely going for the Ibanez based on how cool it looks, I owned a Squier bass and it was so wacky

I like Ibanez too. If you don't mind me asking, what's your budget?

Either one is a good choice, but before you buy try out a few different guitars. Decide what feels right for you.

best electric guitars for beginners

Key Considerations for Choosing a Beginner Electric Guitar:

  1. Playability: Look for a guitar with a comfortable neck and low action (the distance between the strings and the fretboard) to make it easier to play.

  2. Body Style: Consider the body style (solid, semi-hollow, or hollow) that suits your preference. Solid body guitars are generally more versatile and durable.

  3. Pickups: Single-coil pickups offer a bright sound, while humbuckers provide a thicker, warmer tone. Beginners might prefer a guitar with a mix of both for versatility.

  4. Weight: A lighter guitar can be more comfortable for beginners, especially during long practice sessions.

  5. Budget: Set a budget. Good beginner electric guitars typically range from $200 to $600.

  6. Brand Reputation: Stick with reputable brands known for quality and reliability, such as Fender, Gibson, Yamaha, and Epiphone.

Recommendations:

  1. Yamaha Pacifica Series: Known for its versatility, playability, and quality at an affordable price (around $300). It features a comfortable neck and a mix of single-coil and humbucker pickups.

  2. Squier by Fender Stratocaster: A great entry-level option (around $200-$400) that offers classic Fender tones and a comfortable playing experience.

  3. Epiphone Les Paul Standard: If you prefer a thicker sound, this model (around $500) offers humbucker pickups and a solid build, making it a great choice for rock and heavier genres.

  4. Fender Player Telecaster: A bit pricier (around $600), but it’s known for its quality and iconic sound, making it a solid investment for beginners who want to stick with the instrument.

Final Tip: Always try out a few guitars in-store if possible to see which one feels best in your hands. Comfort and personal preference are key to enjoying your playing experience!
