Best Online Music Theory Courses

TL;DR

  • Open Music Theory: Comprehensive and self-study friendly [3:2]
  • Soundfly's Theory for Producers: Free course tailored for producers [3:3]
  • http://musictheory.net: Great for learning basics [4:3]

Comprehensive Courses

For those looking for structured courses that cover a wide range of music theory topics, Open Music Theory is highly recommended. It provides a thorough exploration of music theory concepts in a format suitable for self-study [3:2]. Another option is the Soundfly series "Theory for Producers," which offers a free online course focusing on music theory from a producer's perspective [3:3].

Basic and Beginner-Friendly Resources

If you're starting with the basics, http://musictheory.net is an excellent resource. It offers lessons on fundamental music theory concepts and includes interactive exercises to reinforce learning [4:3]. Additionally, YouTube channels like David Bennett, Adam Neely, and Charles Cornell provide accessible explanations of basic music theory concepts [4:2].

Specialized and Niche Courses

For those interested in specific aspects of music theory such as harmonics or composition, Signals Music Studio offers a focused course on guitar and songwriting [3:1]. The website http://musictheory.pugetsound.edu provides in-depth coverage of various subjects in music theory, including worksheets for practice [5:1].

Alternative Learning Methods

Some users have suggested non-traditional methods of learning music theory, such as engaging with musicians who use theory intuitively or formally [4:4]. This approach can enhance understanding through practical application and discussion.

Recommendations Beyond Discussions

Beyond these discussions, consider platforms like Coursera or Udemy, which offer paid courses in music theory. These platforms often feature courses taught by experienced instructors and provide certificates upon completion. Additionally, exploring local community colleges or universities might reveal online offerings that suit your needs.

Im not sure about courses, but Rick Beato makes great videos covering music theory from beginner to advanced. some are even labeled "basic of music theory", "what a pro should know" which lets you know what level your dealing with.

theres no course like structure but you could probably build a learning path from them.

Good online music theory courses?

Posted by saw-mines · in r/musictheory · 2 years ago

My friend asked me if I knew of any courses he could take over our winter break to study music theory. I linked him to musictheory.net and a couple YouTube channels that I found really informative, but I hadn’t ever used any sort of online course since I took the class in high school, so I was wondering if anyone here had any recommendations in that area. He’s not a complete beginner, he can read music and has a sense of what a chord is, but he wants to learn more and I’d really love to encourage him to do so however is best

Lots of great YouTube videos. David Bennett and I think a few others have videos ranking music theory concepts but all the videos are essentialy explaining all the basic concepts. From there look up other music theory videos like ones from Adam Neely and Charles Cornell

Regardless of whether you want to go to official classes or not, I'd highly recommend talking to and working with musicians who use the theory (intuitively or with formal education) you're looking to understand. I found that my knowledge went up quite a lot when I started to talking to and working with a lot more musicians. This is not something you need to do formally, just show genuine interest in people's weird music and talk to them.

Online course on music theory?

Posted by PerformanceThink8504 · in r/musictheory · 7 months ago

Hi, I’m an amateur piano player, but I want to know more about harmonics and music theories. And I was wondering whether there is any online music theory courses that goes deep into analyzing pieces and maybe even introduce how to compose music? I already know quite basic stuffs, and I want to learn more, but I am not intending to go back to school or anything.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't really know about courses, but I know of this website that I used for my college courses that covers pretty much every possible subject in music theory that's very in depth that even includes worksheets: https://musictheory.pugetsound.edu/mt21c/MusicTheory.html

Also worth mentioning that you should keep in mind that music theory is not meant to be a set of rules, but rather a form of analysis that explains why things in music work the way they do. Composition is a form of artistic expression, music theory is secondary to everything else.

If you want classical theory, one of the most comprehensive things out there (which is free) is Seth Monahan's video series. He is a phenomenal teacher that is a music theorist and university teacher. He puts all his course material into video form for YouTube. Helped me a TON personally.

Here is the best way I have found to study Music Theory: a free playlist that covers the equivalent of two semesters of music theory at Berklee

Music theory from the ground up (by Ben Levin)

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJTWoPGfHxQH5zdZN6UlMPwZerVApkqmk

I used it like a book, watched it and did all the exercices over a few months and music theory makes sense to me now.

As a lifelong student of at 75. I can tell you there's no comprehensive understanding of music theory unless you can hear it--- and once you can hear it, any of these courses have what you need

Having said that, one of the advantages iof memorizing.a lot of music theory stuff even doesn't mean anything to you as that as soon as you can hear it you'll have that knowledge at your fingertips

You can play all the modes in the key of C on a piano easily then you can play all the modes starting on the note C. And you should be able to reference back to all the modes you played in the key of C. Then each particular mode has its own modes and then there are chords derived from all the modes, the modes of modes, and now we are into Rick. Beato book territory

Basically, you can learn all the rules of a foreign language. We're going to say you can speak the language. It doesn't make any sense

they are separated; the one you mention is more classical oriented with heavy use of Musicscore, the other has a title like “Music theory for electronic musicians” or somthing like that and use a DAW to explain the theory

2 upvotes on reddit
HyacinthProg · 1 month ago

I completed the bulk of it and thought it was pretty good. It's definitely better than getting a bunch of fragmented information off of youtube.

sempernewby · 1 month ago

Yes, I did it. It was good; he has a nice demeanor and explain theory very well. He has 2 theory courses, one is more oriented to classical music (The 7 part one) and the other, I don’t remeber how many parts, for electronic music. I think it would be a solid choice for you.

3 upvotes on reddit
Potter_King · OP · 1 month ago

Ah good to know! So is the one I described one of those 2? Or the 2 you mentioned are separate to this one?

Schools that offer online music theory?

Posted by desertmaxx · in r/musictheory · 5 years ago

Just curious if there are any universities or colleges that offer music theory as an online class. I have a very solid job, but work nights and my school and all other surrounding schools only offer theory at 7/8am. I would be very interested in taking it online if possible. I have already finished all ensembles and recitals I need to get my associates.

best online music theory courses

Key Considerations for Online Music Theory Courses:

  1. Course Content: Look for courses that cover a range of topics, including scales, chords, harmony, rhythm, and ear training. A comprehensive curriculum will provide a solid foundation.

  2. Instructor Qualifications: Check the background of the instructors. Experienced musicians or educators with a strong understanding of music theory can enhance your learning experience.

  3. Learning Format: Consider whether you prefer video lectures, interactive quizzes, or written materials. Some platforms offer a mix of formats, which can cater to different learning styles.

  4. Community and Support: Courses with forums or community support can provide additional help and motivation. Engaging with peers can enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the material.

  5. Flexibility and Accessibility: Ensure the course fits your schedule and is accessible on various devices. Self-paced courses allow you to learn at your own speed.

Recommended Courses:

  • Coursera - Music Theory Fundamentals: Offered by Berklee College of Music, this course provides a solid introduction to music theory with engaging video lectures and assignments.

  • Udemy - Music Theory for Beginners: This course is great for beginners and covers essential concepts in a straightforward manner. It often goes on sale, making it budget-friendly.

  • Berklee Online - Music Theory 101: A more in-depth course that covers advanced topics and is taught by experienced instructors. It’s ideal for those looking to deepen their understanding.

  • YouTube Channels (e.g., Adam Neely, 12tone): For free resources, these channels offer engaging content on music theory concepts and practical applications.

Recommendation: If you're just starting, I recommend the Coursera course from Berklee for its structured approach and high-quality content. If you're looking for something more casual and free, exploring YouTube channels can be a great way to supplement your learning.
