TL;DR
Ergonomic Chair Recommendations
For those experiencing back pain during long study sessions, investing in a quality ergonomic chair can make a significant difference. Herman Miller Aeron and Steelcase Leap chairs are frequently recommended due to their durability and ergonomic design [2:3]. These chairs offer multiple adjustment points, allowing users to tailor the fit to their body, which is essential for maintaining proper posture and reducing discomfort
[4].
Gaming vs. Office Chairs
While some suggest gaming chairs for their ergonomic features [2:4], others argue that even high-end gaming chairs do not match the ergonomic standards of office chairs
[2:3]. If budget allows, opting for a reputable office chair brand may provide better support and comfort for extended periods of study.
Adjusting Your Workspace
Beyond the chair itself, setting up your workspace ergonomically is crucial. The Ergonomics Guy offers valuable tips on creating a comfortable and safe study environment [2:2]. Ensuring your computer screen is at eye level and your arms and legs form "L" shapes while seated can help prevent strain
[4].
Alternative Seating Options
Some users have found relief by occasionally switching from a chair to a gymnastics ball, which helps strengthen core and back muscles [5:3]. Others prefer reading on a bed or couch, although this might not be ideal for prolonged study sessions
[5:5].
Campus Study Spots
If studying in different locations, newer buildings or well-funded departments often have better seating options [3:3]. Exploring these areas may provide access to more comfortable and supportive chairs for studying.
Hey everyone, I’ve been having some backache during long study sessions. I currently use a basic visitor’s chair, and if the problem continues, I’m thinking of switching it out.
I’m curious—what kind of chair or back support do you use while studying for hours? Do you also follow any specific stretches or posture tips that help manage or prevent back pain?
Would really appreciate any suggestions—whether it’s an ergonomic setup, a cushion that helps, or a routine that works for you. Thanks in advance!
Hey. I totally relate, I’ve heard a lot of people say that even a decent chair only goes so far when you’re studying for hours.
I’ve been working on a little Mac menu bar tool for people like us. It gives short posture resets/training, breathing cues, and stretch ideas you can follow right from your screen.
Still early days, so I’m genuinely curious: What kind of reminder would actually help you take a break or fix your posture mid-session, without being annoying?
Really curious to hear what’s worked (or hasn’t) for others!
A supportive chair can make a difference; perhaps look into options on ergonomicchairfinder.com for suitable choices.
Also my back pain and posture improved after giving importance to rear delts at the gym!

Just buy green soul gaming chair or other cheaper option- lay on your bed with one elbow support, right leg on left thigh and study!
People here are very professional and experienced. But I understand this work from home might be new to all of us.
I have normal table and chair but I guess a good chair at least my help me in concentration more and also with my posture. I have gone through Amazon and few others but all chairs n table seems to be either way to relaxing or way to stiff.
Can you people suggest me something.
Not a table or chair suggestion, but The Ergonomics Guy has great tips for setting up an safe and comfortable office. Unfortunately, he passed a few years ago, but his company is still open.
Thanks!!
Go for the more gaming oriented chairs, they're more ergonomic
Any recommendations in that And what about table , how u find one that is apt for ur job n height of chair
Above is the worst advice I've ever heard anyone give. Even high end gaming chairs = low end office chairs. Gaming chairs are designed to market to people based on hype and "looks" rather than ergonomics. If you have $$$, look into Herman Miller Aeron or any Herman Miller chair. Or, Steelcase Leap chair. You can also buy these used and they are insanely durable.
I have an ikea office chair (alefjäll) and I love it. It was relatively inexpensive but since I work from home and use this chair daily, I haven't had a single bout of neck pain or shoulder pain. It is comfortable and easily adjustable. Also, if you don't have it yet, get a computer screen and make sure you look straight ahead; his will also help with posture.
I’ll cut right to it: I’m 30 and sitting in random chairs, hunched over a table means I wake up with horrible back and hip pain. Anyone have tips on good ergonomic seating (as in back support, and at a good height for typing on a laptop) around campus? The counter on the second floor of Ode has been my go-to but I’d love to be able to mix it up.
Thanks & good luck on finals everyone!
Foster has some comfy seats. You may not get a plug nearby though. And it’s good people watching
Honestly? Go to the newer buildings or the schools with money. (Looking at you Foster and Founder’s Hall)
Yeah I’m now thinking that’s my mistake - I tend to have classes in older buildings. I’ll go scope out the better funded departments for good seating 👀
I used to do ergonomics for the Federal government. Addressing chair issues took up a significant part of my day.
Get an ergonomic chair. It should have multiple adjustment points. A task chair, office chair or gaming chair will fit this bill.
Make sure your chair is properly adjusted. By "proper," I mean your arms and legs should be in "L" positions. The lumbar support should be in the lower third of the back.
Adjust the chair to fit your body. Otherwise, your body will adjust to the chair.
Let me know if you have any questions.
I have a hard time finding a chair. All gamer chairs suck. I just ended up buying one at Officewhatever. It has no adjustments really. I just use a seat cushion and lean back and it keeps weight off my back. I have no pains whatsoever.
Commercial office furniture stores. Some place that sells Herman Miller. Pricey, but one of most important things in my office.
Curious if there are any good chairs for sitting and reading a book. Recliners are too cozy and probably only good for watching movies or relaxing. Office Chairs are too upright. Anything you found for sitting and reading a book for a couple of hours straight?
Chairs ??? Honestly i read books on my bed in a way that im lying on my chest my hands and head are hanging off the edge and the book is on the floor
I recommend switching gymnastics ball with a chair occasionally, helps strengthen your core and back muscle :)
"Will"chair🤣🤣
Couch or bed. Prop yourself up. Some people gotta lay down to read foe some reason.
For me it's office chairs. Sitting upright with good posture is the only way i can study continuously for a long time 😄
Hello there! Just starting my first year of studies. Moved into a furnished home, discovered that my chair is god awful. gives me strain within 30 minutes.
So I want to ask you guys, what is the single best chair you guys owned/invested in?
Any decently priced chair that you felt comfortable in after being in it for more than 3-4 hours?
If you have the funds get something from Steelcase or Herman-Miller. They're commercial grade chairs that will last you for years. They pop up on Craigslist for cheap relatively frequently. You can't go wrong. I'm a software developer and far too often I am sitting in it for 12+ hours straight without discomfort.
4 years ago, I bought a 15 year old Herman-Miller Aeron chair on Craigslist for $350. It is still rocking at nearly 20 years old and I foresee being able to last for several more years.
Every big box chair I've purchased has worn out within a year. Before I bough my current chair, I was basically paying $100/year for a shitty Staples chair.
Go to craigslist and look for a used herman miller. i picked up an aeron (normally a $1000+ chair) for around 120 from a business that was having a moving out sale.
Your contribution to the premed community is greatly appreciated lol
who knew vennu could be so thrifty
this question appeals greatly to my interests. I am growing weary of studying on my palace of pillows.
One of my favorite makeshift "desks" when I was a wee po' laddie was an incredibly comfortable armchair/loveseat thing and a wide wooden plank that I lazily placed across the armrests. It looks a bit sketch, but is practical and comfy af and I still resort to similar methods when I get the chance.
that armchair + plank combination actually seems comfortable!
no chair, just stand. get swole, get used to standing, get tired, go to bed
unfortunately, getting swole is going to be difficult haha

Sitting on an ordinary chair for extended periods can harm your back, which is why many people are turning to ergonomic office chairs. These chairs are popular for their superior back support.
So, what are the most suitable office chairs for relieving back pain currently available on the market?
Here are several chairs highly recommended by Reddit users and experts:
Before purchasing a chair designed to alleviate back pain, you need to understand the following points:
Ergonomic chairs are generally equipped with lumbar support, but it is not necessarily adjustable.
The issue lies in the fact that not all chairs that boast "lumbar support" actually work. Some brands claim that their chairs can alleviate lower back pain, but in reality, they are ineffective when sat on, and may even exacerbate the pain.
This may be because:
The lumbar support is poorly designed and cannot provide any support at all
Or the lumbar support is not suitable for you personally
Lumbar support, like "comfort", is highly subjective.
For example, Aeron provides a relatively firm support, suitable for people who prefer a straight sitting posture, but it may be too tiring for some people.
Steelcase Leap offers adjustable tension support, making it more suitable for individuals who require customized support.
If you have an existing back injury, a lumbar support that can adjust both height and depth is more suitable for you. You can decide the degree to which your waist is "supported", allowing the chair to adapt to you, rather than you accommodating the chair.
Do you prefer leaning forward or sitting back? The chair should conform to your posture, rather than forcing you to change your habits.
A good material should be able to adjust slightly with your body movements and possess a certain degree of elasticity.
Because when we sit for a long time, we will stretch, move, and turn around from time to time.
If the material of the chair back or lumbar support is too hard and cannot flexibly adapt, it can actually cause discomfort.
Many cheap mesh chairs are stiff in material, breathable but lacking elasticity, which can easily lead to back pain.
A highquality ergonomic chair should support the following adjustment functions:
Seat height (usually adjusted via a pneumatic rod)
Seat back tilt and tension control
Lumbar support height and depth
Some chairs also support seat sliding forward and backward to accommodate different leg lengths
A good adjustment mechanism can ensure that the backrest conforms to your spinal curve, providing personalized support regardless of your height.
Some office chairs are designed with an "Sshaped" backrest structure, mimicking the natural curve of the spine. This not only conforms to the back but also helps prevent slouching and hunched posture.
In addition, a qualified office chair should also allow you to move freely:
Equipped with a rotatable base
Freely extend and turn to reach for objects
Avoiding frequent standups can help promote blood circulation and relax muscles
In summary, a chair that suits you must provide comfort when sitting and flexibility when moving, in order to truly relieve back pressure and enhance work efficiency.
Man, this sounds like AI just throwing out fancy words without really getting it.
Here’s the deal — the real magic of an ergonomic chair is all in the chassis and how the whole thing moves. The difference between a dynamic seat-back sync system, a regular tilt, or a stiff bucket chair? It’s huge for your back and comfort.
You can have all the adjustable lumbar supports and fancy materials you want, but if the chair’s frame and tilt don’t work with your body and keep your lower back supported when you lean back, it’s basically useless.
At the end of the day, it’s how the chair’s core mechanics move with you that actually makes a difference — not just marketing terms or a bunch of adjustments that don’t sync up with how you sit.
Hey ChatGPT, you are entirely wrong, the best chair is a wobbly wooden stool. If wobbling bothers you, you can flip it upside down and shove it up your keester.
Remember, the best office chair for gaming is a wooden stool.
Correct
no matter what chair you have if you're not stretching your hamstrings and your piriformis muscles your back will hurt after a certain amount of time
Thank you for the AI scrape and summary, chatGPT. Very cool. /s
Austin from Branch Furniture here! Great to see the Branch Verve on your list. It’s really a great fit if you’re looking a 90-degree backrest instead of angle like most office chairs.
If anyone would like a discount code, I’m happy to provide them!
Hello all,
I'm looking for a very comfortable office chair around or below $300 for my brother, who will be attending medical school soon. I know this probably isn't a typical question for this thread, but I thought I'd ask since you all probably have experience with which chairs are comfy or not for long hours of studying. :) Thanks in advance!
Personally use the IKEA Markus chair, it's very durable and comfortable. I wouldn't recommend it for smaller people (150cm) as my friends have told me they feel like they're being swallowed by it. And its not expensive.
I second this, been using this chair since HS( replaced a few times ofc). But spending something like 11hrs/day for coming on a year in it and not having problems is a testamate to it's quality.
An alternative (especially as he might be moving across the country for residency) is a meh chair and a pillow like this https://relaxtheback.com/products/contour-lumbar-cervical-back-cushion.
if you're in a big city, find a store where you can try out steelcase and herman miller. see which one he likes. get them at used office furniture store.
Costco has a really nice La-Z boy for $200. I just bought it and it’s fantastic
ErgoChair Core from Autonomous is at $299. It's a mesh chair too. If you've got more money to burn though go for Herman Miller or Steelcase chairs.
I’m looking for a good chair for long hours of work infront of the computer and studying. Have issues with chronic back pain and my current chair is not cutting. If anyone has reccs, please send them my way.
I have a standing desk too. It would be for home office.
Do you have a budget that you're looking at?
Ideally no more than $800
Long hours at the computer are rough for anyone, but especially for those with chronic back pain. You definitely want to find something that supports you.
Solid options: Steelcase Leap V2, Herman Miller Aeron, or, for a more budget-friendly choice, the Branch Ergonomic Chair Pro (full disclosure: I work for Branch!)
I saw your budget was no more than $800, but you can sometimes find those more expensive options second-hand for less than $800. What's your height and is the pain more in your lower back, upper back, or both?
I've never studied, or let alone sat in a chair for as many hours as I have studying for the mcat, especially while taking FLs. I'm starting to realize my chair really isn't all that and I should probably invest in a better chair so I can endure the long study hours ahead of me (and that'll follow in medical school). Does anyone have recommendations for a comfortable chair to study in?? Gaming chairs, ergonomic chairs, doesnt really matter to me just suggest the best mcat study chair
I’ve heard Herman Miller chairs are supposed to be very good quality but they are pricey. You could probably find a used one on whatever ad site you use (Craigslists, kijiji, facebook marketplace).
Herman miller better come with a 520 with these prices😭😭😭
I’ve never studied in a better chair then the $5 dollar rocking desk chairs I got at my university’s surplus. That’s just to say it’s prolly best to try and see what you like in a chair cuz it’s a largely personal preference.
How did you even find out your university had a surplus😭😭 is this a normal thing for some universities? Im also testing August 23rd 🫡 how’s the grind been?
Mine was across from my dorm freshmen year so that really helped, but maybe try googling it? As far as studying, it feels like trying to plug holes in a sinking ship. Everytime I plug one, and a new one busts open. Just so much info. Best of luck though!
staples hyken. trust
I will definitely be checking this out
best ergonomic chairs for studying
Key Considerations for Ergonomic Chairs:
Adjustability: Look for chairs with adjustable seat height, backrest angle, and armrests. This allows you to customize the chair to fit your body perfectly.
Lumbar Support: A chair with good lumbar support helps maintain the natural curve of your spine, reducing the risk of back pain during long study sessions.
Seat Cushioning: Opt for a chair with comfortable, breathable cushioning. Memory foam or high-density foam can provide good support without sacrificing comfort.
Material: Choose a chair made from breathable materials to keep you cool and comfortable. Mesh chairs are often a good choice for ventilation.
Mobility: Consider a chair with smooth-rolling casters and a swivel base for easy movement around your study area.
Recommendations:
Herman Miller Aeron: This chair is a classic in ergonomic design, offering excellent lumbar support, adjustability, and a breathable mesh back. It's a long-term investment for comfort and support.
Steelcase Leap: Known for its flexibility and adjustability, the Leap chair adapts to your movements and provides great support for long hours of studying.
Secretlab Titan Evo 2022: While primarily a gaming chair, it offers excellent ergonomic features, including adjustable lumbar support and a comfortable seat, making it suitable for studying as well.
Haworth Zody: This chair is eco-friendly and provides great lumbar support with a sleek design, making it a good option for both home and office use.
Takeaway: Investing in a good ergonomic chair can significantly enhance your comfort and productivity while studying. Look for features that suit your specific needs and preferences.
