What Redditors are Saying

Best Noise-Cancelling Headphones for Studying

TL;DR

  • Top Recommendations: Bose QuietComfort series, Sony WH-1000XM4/XM5, AirPods Pro 2.
  • Budget Option: Consider earplugs or earmuffs combined with headphones.

Bose QuietComfort Series

The Bose QuietComfort (QC) series is frequently recommended for its excellent noise-cancellation capabilities. Users have praised both the earbuds and over-ear headphones for their ability to block out ambient noise effectively [1:2][3:3]. The QC35 II model is highlighted for long study sessions due to its comfort and efficiency in noise cancellation [5:1]. However, some users noted that while they excel at noise cancellation, the audio quality might not be as impressive compared to other brands [5:3].

Sony WH-1000XM4/XM5

Sony's WH-1000XM4 and XM5 models are highly recommended for their advanced noise-canceling technology. They are particularly effective in noisy environments like coffee shops or public transportation [3:4][5:4]. The XM4s are favored for their portability due to their foldable design [3:5]. Some users suggest combining them with foam earplugs for enhanced noise isolation [5:2].

AirPods Pro 2

Apple's AirPods Pro 2 are praised for their noise-canceling abilities, especially in environments with talking or everyday background noise [3:1][4:2]. They are a good option for those who prefer earbuds over headphones, offering a more compact and less conspicuous solution [4:5]. However, they may require additional accessories like memory foam tips for optimal fit and performance [4:2].

Alternative Solutions

For those on a tighter budget, combining earplugs or earmuffs with regular headphones can be an effective way to achieve noise reduction [2:2][5:4]. Brands like 3M offer high-quality ear defenders that can be worn underneath headphones for added protection against noise [1:9]. Additionally, playing brown noise through headphones has been suggested as a helpful tool for masking distracting sounds [2:6][5:10].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

While these recommendations focus on noise-cancellation capabilities, it's important to consider factors such as comfort, battery life, and compatibility with your devices. Visiting a store to try different models before purchasing can help ensure you find the right fit for your needs [4:1].

Which noise cancelling headphones actually works best for you? I want something to improve my productivity in my noisy study/workplace and i'm willing to pay if you say it's truly worth it.

Any recs?

I really like my Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds and headphones. I find that they are the closest that you can get to truly noise-cancelling. It helps if you play music / white noise alongside using the ANC mode, of course. I recommend the earbuds if you truly want good noise canceling as the in-ear nature of the device helps with blocking sound. The headphones are really good, too, but are not as good as the earbuds in this department (this will generally be true if you compare any noise-cancelling earbuds to their headphone equivalents, to be clear).

I have also read that the Sony -XM5s have good ANC -- nearly comparable to Bose -- so perhaps look into those as well? I've never owned any of the Sonys, so I can't speak to that.

If I'm not mistaken, both Bose and Sony have released new iterations of their earbuds and headphones. I can't speak to those either as my research was done before those came out. So, maybe things are a little different. But I think those two brands are a good place to look regardless.

Hope this helps. ^^

When people say loops for silence... Are they talking about the plugs? Because those dull the sounds, but I still hear everything. They're fully-seated, no gaps.

Am I using earplugs wrong?

Loops aren't even claiming to provide silence. Their whole thing is noise reduction, not noise cancelling.

I like my AirPods Pro best. I have Bose QCs as well but theyve been glitching out - just read they have a common issue (annoying since they’re expensive lol)

If you don’t want music/podcasts, etc - Loops are really good

Would wearing ear defenders (think they're called earmuffs in the US) be an option? I have to wear them a lot due to suffering from noise sensitivity and I've found they help me concentrate a lot better. You can get ones that basically block out all normal sounds and you can even wear earbuds underneath if you want. They can look quite obvious though.

3M makes the best quality ones in my experience. The X4As are quite flat so not as conspicuous, and are good at dulling loud noises. They're lightweight and comfortable. Personally, I usually wear the X5As as I have very painful hyperacusis and need the extra protection just to function, though these look ridiculous due to their size and subsequently attract ridicule so best for using when alone.

I would say both are more comfortable and perform better than cheaper brands. These are both pretty heavy duty to suit my needs but they do make lower decibel types too.

If you have TMJD or any nerve pain in the face, or you just don't like the feeling of something clamped hard on your head, you can stretch them out a bit first over a box. Also, they will inevitably make you look like you've just come from a worksite since that's what they're designed for, but you can put stickers on them or colour them in with Sharpie (that's what I did).

Amazon and eBay have loads of ear defenders for autistic kids which look more like headphones but I found they were all poor quality and not worth it.

Im really bad with noises and get super distracted and frustrated.

I have 6 dogs and a loud family, I tried the Anker Q30 but it really just muffles things a little bit.

So does anyone have any they like? I want in ear because the over ear make my head sweat and it’s almost summer time💀

Not trying to spend too much, paid $80 for the Q30s and it was NOT worth the money imo

Active noise cancellation only works well with certain types of noises.

Earplugs or ear muffs will do a better job.

I don't think there is a product that does everything you want.

Closed-back over ear headphones can incorporate passive noise isolation. I wouldn't expect to find a good pair with active noise cancellation for $80.

Active noise cancellation also doesn't work as well for high pitch complex noises like a barking dog.

I have a pair of Bose QC earbuds that I love. They were expensive, but I’ve spent as much on textbooks, and as somebody who struggles to focus in noisy environments they’re one of the nicest things I’ve gotten myself for school.

The way they fit your ear provides a similar function to ear plugs, and the noise cancellation on top of that actually works really well. They make my daily bus commute, or like a moderately trafficked Starbucks level of noise, silent. For anything louder I play white noise with the noise cancellation on.

Their downsides are the battery life is a bit short. They’re also better at blocking lower frequency sounds than higher ones, conversation and bus engine etc will be totally blocked but screaming child for example you could still hear. If you’re listening to music with them, the sound quality is really tailored to the noise cancellation feature, and sounds kind of tinny without it on. With the noise cancellation on though it’s very good.

Tl;dr pricy but worth

Everytime I go on campus to study, or waiting in between classes, there's ALWAYS annoying ass mfs yapping so damn loud. All I want is to study in peace holy damn. So I'm wondering what people recommend for noise cancelling headphones? I've heard Beats Studio Pro is good and there's also Bose QuietComfort. I have Beats Studio Pro right now but in scenarios like these it doesn't do shit. What are yalls experiences and are there any other things you recommend? (I'm just out here talking about everyday generic study spots and places that are nice and cosy unlike DP/DC ugly ass quiet spaces).

I personally have the Sony WH-1000 XM-5's which on sale can reach about 379 cad. This I realize is not what most people like spending a weeks worth of work on. Instead the XM-4's cancel just about as well and sound amazing and can be found around 250.

The XM-5's completely cancelled the sound of an airplane motor right next to me and a snoring dude. Recommend.

Apple has the best noise-cancelling headphones, imo. I use the AirPods Max rn, and it's amazing for studying around people who are talking. The main con is that they are really expensive. I got them on sale during black friday tho so it was worth it for me. You can go to the Apple store, and they let you test them out. AirPods Pro 2 are also a good option if you prefer earbuds instead, they're the same in terms of noise-cancelling, but they're less expensive.

Noise-cancelling headphone recommendations?

Hi all, college student here looking for your noise-cancelling/reducing headphone recommendations! I'll be studying on campus most of the time and need something to help block out the usual background noise at universities. Repetitive noises like chairs moving, pencils writing, people talking or whispering, shoes squeaking, etc. very quickly overstimulate me and make me distracted and my current headphones are not able to block that out even if I'm listening to brown noise. Thank you for your help!

Pro tip.

I have the XM3 from Sony (over the ear headphones), which I prefer over the XM4 for their more compact case and foldability.

I wear foam earplugs inside, then put these headphones over it, and bam, good to go. Can study perfectly fine even in something like a busy coffee shop and if you really need to hear some audio, you still have the headphones on and can dial up the volume a bit and it works great.

I vouch for em as well, Bose is up there with one of the better affordable noise cancelling headphones, of all the brands I've used the past 6 or 7 years they're probs the best. I gotta say the actual audio quality is not great at all but for noise cancelling on its own it's excellent.

Sony and Sennheiser are also recommendations if pure noise cancelling isn't what you're after.

I have ADHD and external noise is infuriating when I’m trying to study. I’ve tried a lot of things. Best solution I’ve found:

WH 1000XM4 from Sony. Over ear noise canceling headphones. By themselves they are excellent at filtering out ambient noise. Not excellent with music and talking though. Solution? Combine with drugstore foam in-ear buds. You’re still going to hear things like car horn, bloody murder screaming, and a coffee grinder, but not much else. 9.5/10, and likely the best available option before hitting the high high end price point.

Another option that I like is brown noise. I HATE white noise, but brown noise awesome. It’s less harsh, softer, more muted, and less distracting. Definitely helps drown out external noise without being distracting. Give it a try with some cheaper headphones and you might find it’ll save you some $$.

I also have the XM4’s and honestly to me they aren’t worth the price. I can still hear people talking or music playing even with noise cancelling on while I’m trying to watch lectures at a coffee shop or something.

Looking for a good pair of noise canceling headphones for studying.

I have a hard time concentrating with background noise, so I am looking for a good pair of noise canceling headphones to connect to my iPhone. My budget is about $350. I’m not too worried about sound quality as I am with the headphones noise canceling ability. I heard about the Bose QC45, but I was not sure if they were the best.

Brauche dringend Rat bezüglich ANC-Kopfhörern und Ohrstöpseln

Posted by Warm-Arm-9603 · in r/ADHS · 4 months ago

Moin!

5 upvotes on reddit
PlumOne2856 · 4 months ago

THIS!

Also da drückt wirklich überhaupt nichts, egal in welcher Liegeposition.

🫠 0/10 would not recommend

Posted by rai_denle · in r/AuDHDWomen · 4 months ago

Everyone, are noise-cancelling headphones WORTH IT?

This type of headphones seem to be widely loved currently and i'm thinking of getting a really good one for my work. If it's worth buying, which brands/models would you pick for your work among tons of options out there? I'm just simply curious to know your favorite choice, across every price range.

Hope to get your advice. Thanks.

I have the Bose QC. They are wonderful, but expensive and kinda heavy/bulky. I'd love to find a lightweight, low profile budget pair.

I love mine. I rarely leave to house without it. I bought the Bose QuietComfort about.. 7-8 years ago and it still works well. Changed the earpads twice, super easy to do. 1000% worth it.

Mine got damaged but it’s something to do with the electrical so if they get tapped or bumped lightly while wearing them, it’s like a static metronome with the music in the background… but when it is working right… best ever (though can get sweaty)

I bought mine in 2010

Mine were also making that static noise and it was driving me crazy. I took the earpads off and found some of my hair on the speakers which I carefully removed with tweezers. They are good as new now :)

I like earbuds since over-ear headphones annoy me. I love my airpod pros 2. My budget friendly option before them was the soundcore Space a40s. *Soudcores also take a beating. I know cause I drop them all the time and even left the case out in the rain once lol.

(Edit for clarity)

My AirPod Pro2 were left in the garden over winter (in Alberta Canada) and still work mostly alright! Static in the right ear unless noise cancelling is turned on 🙃

I find they’re really hard and will fall out kind of easy. I have small ear canals so that’s an issue with me. I’d like to try the new Bose that clip onto your earlobe so I don’t have to deal with anything IN my ears, but then it might just be too much

My old sound cores survived the rain in Vancouver! They fell out of my pocket in my driveway. Took me three days to find it. Beyond shocked they live to this day.

I just got the AirPods and I’m terrified of losing them. The key selling point for me is I can make everything beep when I inevitably lose them many times a week lol

I have a Sony WH 1000XM3. I’ve had it for years. The sound is awesome and they’re really comfortable. There’s a newer model out, the XM4. It’s 230 euros. I’d buy a similar headphone again in a heartbeat if anything happens to the one I have now.

Have the XM4s and they have literally changed my life. You can pry those things out of my cold dead hands because I won’t give them up for anything. So comfortable too! I’d recommend them to anybody

Edit: I believe there are also XM5s now but they’re not worth the money over the XM4s. Not sure about the XM3s as these are my first ones

I feel like the XM5’s are worth the price difference over the XM4’s when it comes to noice cancelling capabilities though!

I really love my Fresh 'n Rebel Clam 2 ANC. It is budget, comes in a lot of fun colors and you can turn on noise cancelling without turning it on and connecting to Bluetooth. It has a little button which only turns the noice cancelling on which I love so much. They are a bit bulky but fit great, dont feel heavy and don't squish your head. I would recommend. I also have the famous Sony wh-1000xm4. Also love them, great noise cancelling and I wear them a lot outside. But they are a bit pricey.

Best earbuds for cancelling noise - please share your opinions

Posted by Visible-Rhubarb623 · in r/GalaxyS23Ultra · 4 months ago

Hi guys, I'm looking for a pair of earbuds (or something similar) to help me work and study more effectively. My younger siblings are always yelling while gaming, and sometimes I completely freeze when I'm trying to focus.
I’ve used the Skullcandy Hesh ANC before, but it didn’t quite cut it — it only filters out certain frequency ranges. It works okay for mid-range voices, but for deeper or higher-pitched ones, the noise canceling is basically useless 😩.
So yeah, I really need a pair of headphones with better active noise cancellation to help me power through my final year.
Thanks in advance, everyone!

Not even the best ANC will completely cancel voices, especially high-pitched ones. ANC is better with constant, low-pitched noises like motors. That being said, Sony is the market leader in ANC. Right now, you can get the WH-1000XM4 at a very decent price.

They've just released XM6 with officially claimed "best noise cancellation" for $450 (probably US price), I watched an LTT (or a sister channel) video about it yesterday ))

Though I should note, the OP was asking for earbuds so it's possible headphones are not what he'd like to get.

The CN700 and CN710 are even cheaper especially when they go on sale every few months, though you will want the foam replacement tips from Comply which the WH-1000XM4 already have

Clever asking this when all of YouTube just released their reviews of the new Sony XM6 headset on the same day. I saw one thumbnail with it and was like "already a new model?", watched it and now my feed is flooded with every YouTubers video on the pair and all released within a few hours of each other. 😆

Good noise cancelling headphones are one of the best investment a college student can make

Posted by [deleted] · in r/college · 3 years ago

I'll be graduating this semester and I have been using some Bose 700 noise canceling headphones for the past two years ever since I transferred from my community college in a large state university and I think they are one of the best investments that a college student can make.

Pros:

  • If you go to a larger school like I do, you're going to be around a lot of people who are talking/doing things whether in the library, student union, or class building. When trying to get done extra work even if you aren't listening to music can be a game changer in terms of helping you focus. These are a huge plus for long study sessions when you have noisy roommates. Even when just traveling for things they are a godsend.
  • You can use them for just about anything whether listening to class lectures online or watching some class video, Netflixing, gaming, working out, talking on the phone, or just listening to music that makes it sound good with the headphones.

Cons:

  • They can be expensive for a good pair and not everyone can afford them even for some Sony, Bose, or Apple airpods pro they can be $250+
  • Over the ear have longer battery life that can last me half or most of the week, but they still have to be charged. Nothing that can be done at night though or other times when not being used.

Not a big list, but just wanted to make my case for them as they really are worth the money if you can spare a few hundred.

Agreed. I got some Sony WH-XB900Ns about 2 years ago and I'm not kidding when I say they genuinely changed my life. One of the best gifts I have ever ever received.

I love them for studying in public/the library/shared spaces because I get really bothered by people talking, eating sounds etc etc. Good for noisy neighbours too.

I just bought those like 2 weeks ago.

I'm an Autistic person and am extremely sensitive to noise. Holy fuck- I have never had a better noise cancelling pair in my life than the Sony Headphones I got. I admittedly almost cried the first time I put them on with how quiet everything got. For the love of god- if you're thinking of getting them and you can afford it- get it. They are the best thing I have bought in the last 2ish years.

I got the Sony WH 1000xm4 and they are worth every penny. I never had noise cancellation headphones before and my house is loud until I wore them. Wish I waited two weeks later since they went on sale for 100$ less but I still don’t regret purchasing them. They have fast charge and can charge fully in 10 to 15 minutes and they have a 30+ hour battery life off a single charge.

I’m also autistic, and these are a literal lifesaver for me. Sometimes the hustle and bustle of campus is very overwhelming and my $60 over the ear noise cancelling headphones do wonders to help myself stay grounded.

Totally agree, OP! My AirPod Pros are a lifesaver. I had regular AirPods until they went missing, and decided to splurge on the pros. I don’t know anything about sound quality (sounds good to me!), but the noise canceling and “transparency” settings are top tier. They charge super fast, too.

I get really distracted and overstimulated by a lot of noise. Putting my AirPods in creates a little bubble where nothing bothers me. I love them.

Any time I have headphones in, I get super conscious of my breathing and the noise I make from moving around/existing. I feel like noise-cancelling headphones would be a nightmare for me.

I survived off of $5 headphones for like 3 years until I got quality wireless earbuds that I can still hear through. Good headphones are probably a good investment, but noise cancelling is an extra.

Totally worth spending the extra money if you really have a hard time studying in noisy environments. My campus only has one small area officially designated a quiet study space. The rest is all collaborative study.

Definitely look into paying a little more for active noise cancelling. For me, the difference between NC and ANC was night and day! I've been using a pair of Jabra elite 75, but they're in-ear, so their battery life is short. I just got a pair of Bose Quiet comfort 45 for the longer battery life and more comfortable feel. Trying them out now.

If you're on a budget, Sennheiser has a pair for about $100 or less.

best noise-cancelling headphones for studying

Key Considerations for Noise-Cancelling Headphones:

  1. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): Look for headphones with effective ANC technology to block out ambient noise, helping you focus better while studying.

  2. Sound Quality: Ensure the headphones provide clear and balanced sound. Good audio quality enhances your listening experience, especially for music or study materials.

  3. Comfort and Fit: Choose headphones that are comfortable for long wear. Over-ear designs often provide better noise isolation and comfort compared to on-ear or in-ear models.

  4. Battery Life: Aim for headphones with a long battery life (20+ hours with ANC on) to avoid frequent recharging during study sessions.

  5. Portability: If you plan to study in different locations, consider foldable or lightweight designs for easy transport.

  6. Additional Features: Look for features like touch controls, voice assistant compatibility, and customizable sound profiles for a more personalized experience.

Recommendations:

  • Sony WH-1000XM5: Widely regarded as one of the best noise-cancelling headphones, offering excellent ANC, superb sound quality, and up to 30 hours of battery life. They are also very comfortable for extended use.

  • Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700: Known for their outstanding noise cancellation and comfort, these headphones provide a great balance of sound quality and features, with around 20 hours of battery life.

  • Apple AirPods Max: If you prefer over-ear headphones with seamless integration into the Apple ecosystem, the AirPods Max offers excellent sound quality and effective ANC, though they come at a higher price point.

Choosing any of these options will enhance your study environment by minimizing distractions and providing a comfortable listening experience.
