What Redditors are Saying

Best Flight Schools in the US

TL;DR

  • Top recommendations include Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, FlightSafety Academy, and Phoenix East Aviation.
  • Consider location, weather, and program structure when choosing a school.

Top Recommended Schools

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is frequently mentioned as one of the best flight schools due to its comprehensive programs and reputation [2:1], [5:2]. FlightSafety Academy is another well-regarded option, offering flexibility for those who may not want an intense schedule [1:1]. Phoenix East Aviation also comes up as a strong contender for Commercial Pilot License (CPL) training [2:1].

Considerations for Choosing a School

When selecting a flight school, it's important to consider factors such as location, weather conditions, and the type of training environment you prefer. Southern California is noted for its excellent flying weather and competitive rental rates [5:1]. Florida and Arizona are also popular choices due to favorable weather conditions year-round [5:6]. Additionally, smaller flight schools might offer more personalized training and potentially lower costs compared to larger institutions [4:2].

Program Structure and Flexibility

The structure of the flight training program is another critical factor. Some schools, like ATP, have an intensive schedule that may not be suitable for everyone [1]. It's advisable to look for programs that allow for a more flexible pace if needed. For example, some schools offer accelerated programs or the ability to pay for training in stages rather than upfront, which can be beneficial in terms of financial planning [5:7].

Community Insights and Warnings

There are mixed reviews about certain schools, particularly ATP, with several users advising against it due to various concerns [3:4], [5:8]. It's crucial to research and read reviews from current and former students to get a sense of the school's reputation and the experiences of others. Engaging with online communities and forums can provide valuable insights into what to expect from different flight schools.

Additional Recommendations

For those looking for alternatives to traditional flight schools, considering a college with a flight program might be worthwhile. This option can provide additional benefits, such as a Restricted ATP at a lower hour count, though it typically takes longer to complete all certifications [4:2].

ORIGINAL POST

I don’t want to go to ATP because I don’t know if Im up for their intense 7 days a week schedule. I heard about American Flyers, and Im looking into United Aviate Academy. What flight schools would you recommend to somebody with no experience?

FlightSafety is a good option. If you're worried about being too intense, you can start out slow - they'll even let you start by just learning how to fly the plane once in the air without worrying about taking off or landing.

Don't go the schools which have more Indians than Americans. Weather plays a big part in Florida. Find your own accommodation.

Try to go to small schools instead of big schools. Be prepared to spend 10 to 15% more than you think

Hey! I totally understand your excitement about flying schools in the US. For CPL training, some well-known schools includes ATP Flight School, Embry-Riddle, and Phoenix East Aviation. Each offer strong programs, but make sure to research there locations, training facilities, and reviews to see which suits you best.

Good Luck!

Flight Schools in SC

Posted by Former_Air9166 · in r/flying · 6 months ago

Does anyone have any good flight school recommendations for getting a CPL i’m just coming out of High School and aren’t sure the best way to go about the whole process. I’m also seeing very negative things about schools like Lift Academy and ATP so i’m not sure what to believe. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

What area of SC are you in? Check out the local airports near you. A lot of them will have smaller flight schools that can can take you all the way to your CFI without needing to go to a big school. You'll save money over going to a big school.

The other thing you could look into do is to go to a college with a flight program, I think there is one at Charleston southern. This can give you access to a Restricted ATP at a lower count, but at the cost of taking longer to get all your certs. Typically its better to do college and flight training separate.

Where in SC? Makes a difference.

Read the FAQ to get smart on the process. Lots of steps ahead of you before Commercial. And lots more after to get a job.

CRAFT in Charleston is good. I have friends in Aiken.

Augusta, GA, is just across the River.

Find a small FBO/school and knock it out part 61. CSU offers a bachelors degree program, but I would highly recommend you consider pursuing a non-aviation degree to have a backup in the event you are unable to fly at some point.

Post in this sub if you want and we’ll look into some schools for you. If they make you pay for all of your training up front, don’t go. They could go bankrupt and you lose all your money. I’m at a college 141 school and pay in advance for each course. All courses are broken up into 2-3 parts and you pay for the expected amount it’ll cost. But paying for EVERYTHING up front is a 🚩

Southern California is, by far, the best place to learn to fly. It's not the cheapest place to live, but rentals are plentiful and often cheaper than other places thanks to competition. Instructions usually make more. Weather is almost always good, even in marine layer season when either ceilings are high enough to stay in the pattern, or lift in the afternoon. You also get a little bit of gentleman's IFR with instructors and fly in actual without it being overly complicated.

Whatever you do don't go to Academy of Aviation. They are scam artists to the fullest extent. I'm not some loser who didn't try or anything, I got my CPL first try on the checkride. They are just the worst. The owner doesn't care about the training, they violate the FARs in the name of profit, don't follow the 141 syllabus, and the chief pilot is a pedo. He got caught (very) inappropriately messaging a cop who was pretending to be a 13 yo girl. They don't give a shit about the students and will do anything to grub money off you. They will break their promises of training costs and time-frame and then blame it on you and require you to pay more. Don't do it.

Coloradosprings meadow lake? Good school?

Posted by Twistedfatemain · in r/flying · 27 days ago

Hi

Has any one attended flight school in Colorado before ? I’ve read about Rocky Mountain but currently they do not do PPL due to maximum capacity.

I came across another school called Coloradospring at Meadow lake.

Are they a good school? What should I be aware of if I were to move to learn to fly to there in Colorado ? Anyone finish 0-CFII within 12 months as advertised in the web?

Thank you

The school itself has little to do with the quality and value you get.

That is the work of the instructor.

Don't neglect seeking out independent instructors who have a passion for teaching. Even if they are more expensive per hour, you will get a better education than shiny schools with shiny airplanes but instructors with little real world experience.

best flight schools in the US

Key Considerations for Choosing a Flight School:

  1. Accreditation and Reputation: Look for schools accredited by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and check their reputation through reviews and testimonials from former students.

  2. Type of Training Offered: Determine if the school offers the type of training you need (Private Pilot License, Commercial Pilot License, Instrument Rating, etc.).

  3. Aircraft Fleet: Evaluate the condition and variety of aircraft available for training. Newer, well-maintained aircraft can enhance your learning experience.

  4. Instructor Experience: Research the qualifications and experience of the flight instructors. Experienced instructors can provide better training and mentorship.

  5. Location and Weather: Consider the school's location and typical weather conditions, as consistent flying weather can impact your training schedule.

  6. Cost and Financing Options: Compare tuition costs and inquire about financing options, scholarships, or payment plans that may be available.

Top Flight Schools in the U.S.:

  1. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach, FL): Known for its comprehensive aviation programs and strong industry connections.

  2. University of North Dakota (Grand Forks, ND): Offers a robust aviation program with a large fleet and experienced instructors.

  3. Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN): Offers a well-respected aviation program with access to advanced simulators and aircraft.

  4. Florida Institute of Technology (Melbourne, FL): Provides a strong aviation program with a focus on both flight training and aviation management.

  5. ATP Flight School: Known for its accelerated training programs and nationwide locations, ATP is a popular choice for those looking to become commercial pilots quickly.

Recommendation: If you're serious about a career in aviation, consider attending a university with a dedicated aviation program, like Embry-Riddle or UND, as they offer a well-rounded education alongside flight training. For those looking for a quicker path to becoming a commercial pilot, ATP Flight School is highly regarded for its efficiency and success rate.
