What Redditors are Saying

TL;DR: For foreign-friendly clubs in Gangnam, consider visiting venues like Soho Lounge, Safari Social Bar, and Times. While Gangnam is generally less foreigner-friendly than Itaewon or Hongdae, these spots cater to a diverse crowd. It's advisable to be cautious of potential discrimination and to avoid overly crowded or tourist-heavy areas.

Foreigner-Friendly Clubs in Gangnam

  1. Soho Lounge: This venue is known for its vibrant atmosphere and welcoming vibe towards foreigners. It offers a mix of music and a comfortable setting for socializing 8:3.

  2. Safari Social Bar: Another popular choice, Safari provides a lively environment with a good mix of locals and expats. The bar often hosts events that attract a diverse crowd, making it a great spot for meeting new people 8:3.

  3. Times: This club is noted for its spacious dance floor and energetic ambiance. It’s a good option if you're looking to enjoy a night out without feeling out of place as a foreigner 8:3.

General Recommendations for Clubbing in Seoul

  • Itaewon: If you’re seeking a more foreigner-friendly experience, Itaewon is highly recommended. It has a reputation for being inclusive and diverse, with many bars and clubs catering specifically to an international clientele. Venues here often have a mix of locals and expats, making it easier to socialize 4:6.

  • Hongdae: While you mentioned avoiding Hongdae due to its younger crowd, it’s worth noting that it has numerous clubs that are popular among foreigners. Places like FF, Madholic, and Gopchang Jeongol are known for their fun atmospheres and mixed crowds 5:1 5:4.

Safety and Cultural Considerations

When clubbing in Korea, especially as a foreigner, it's important to be aware of cultural nuances. Some commenters noted experiences of being treated differently based on race or nationality, particularly in certain clubs. It's advisable to choose venues that are known for being inclusive and to stay away from places with a reputation for discrimination 2:4 10:8.

Additionally, always be cautious of your surroundings and the people you interact with, as some clubs may attract individuals who might not respect personal boundaries. Enjoying the nightlife in Seoul can be a fantastic experience if approached with awareness and care!

ORIGINAL POST

I plan to go out alot but I'm looking for some good clubs. (Not trying to do the nasty but men will be men lol) im just looking for a place that i can drink and have fun. I don't plan on going to hongdae clubs bc I've heard horror stories unless someone actually knows a good place that you won't be bothered much. And ik itaewon is alot more foreigner friendly especially clubbing. As far as I know gangnam is not the most foreigner friendly? So suggestions let me know also tell me where to stay away from!!!

Please also note any risks and dangers you might have going to a club in korea.

Even if you can enter a foreigner friendly club there are always predatory locals who assume you an easy target.

Unfortunately the general mindset these local guys have against foreigner women is that they are easy to bed and will put out easily too and all they have to do is buy you a drink to seal the deal. I'm not sure where this idea stems from but its the general idea they all have.

Personally had a friend had this happen to them at the club and because she wanted to make it very clear she was not interested in his attention he dropped his cigarette ashes onto her leg for rejecting him.

Not to say you should change your plans or anything but to be aware things can happen and make sure you keep an eye on each other through the whole night.

Also clubbing attire is a lot more understated then you'd think compared to western ones so you'd be okay with a cute top and skirt and minimal makeup

Clubbing / making friends in kondae gangnam apgujeong?

Posted by Ady_le_s · in r/koreatravel · 8 months ago

foreigners friendly club?

So I was thinking about going clubbing during my February trip and I wanted to know some things.

1- Does anyone wanna go clubbing with me lol? I'll be travelling alone so I wanted to get some friends... I'm 21F

2- Foreigner friendly clubs in gangnam, apgujeong, konkuk/ kondae? If you have any idea of the price range too..... 👉👈

3- Any house/electro club in Seoul? I once heard a club in gangnam playing 2 phut Hon but they didn't let me in 🤡

Yeh so I hope me asking doesn't bother too much... Thank you for reading :)

Clubbing in Gangnam / Hongdae as a foreigner?

Posted by Embarrassed-Sky-1661 · in r/seoul · 2 years ago

I'm 32 and will be 33 next year when I go, so I want to find fun clubs with people generally my age and are foreigner-freindly. Want to experience Hongdae nightlife but am I too 'old' for that or will it be fine? Is Gangnam the better option for me? Advice would be great!

go to apgujeong rodeo. if you’re a man, 33 is probably too old for hongdae which isn’t a loss because it’s the worst place to club

Will be difficult for you to enter some clubs in Hongdae due to your age, but you could easily have as much fun in certain bars

you’ll be fine to get in then, it’s just a super young area and kinda gross. it’s extremely cheap though so if that’s a priority, it’s worth it. you’ll constantly be approached in hongdae by weird foreigner targeting men since it’s the tourist area which is annoying

Hongdae: There are four really large Korean universities in the area so the crowd is younger. Closer to your age

Gangnam: Is more expensive than Hongdae but the overall quality is probably better. The crowd is slightly older on average, but there are plenty of young college-age people who party there as well. The atmosphere is much different from Hongdae. Think of like all the rich, preppy people from your high school. They moved on to college and now party here.

Others:

Apgujeong rodeo: There used to be some lounges and decent LP-bars here.

Shinchon: Right next to Hongdae. Very young crowd, lots of places to eat. Decent hookah bars and some smaller clubs.

In Hongdae it is pretty typical to go club hopping, go to Zen 1, Zen 2, B1, Attention, etc. In all those you don't have to pay entrance fee and the queue is short. You get the "stamp" and you can go to another. Also, some of them give you 1 free drink.

Be aware that almost all clubs in these areas, smoke is allowed, and the day after you will have to make a laundry of whatever you wore since the smell is unbearable lmao.

In Attention (Hongdae) and in 1 club in Gangnam (i don't remember the name) I got the entrance denied for being a foreigner or not having Korean residence card. I guess it all depends at what time you enter, like, if it is late night or barely 11/12.

Also, in Gangnam we went to one that only accepted people with a table booked (table was like 400.000 won per person, which is insane, but maybe it was because it was too late...

Have a fun time!!

Hongdae. Also, depending on where you go I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily racist. Hotel booking clubs may not be as down to serve you but it’s more of a language and understanding of how they work

I used to be a clubhead in Korea. Here's my two cents:

  • Mike's Cabin, Hongdae: bar/club plays latin music, old school pops, hiphop. It's non-smoking so better choice if you don't prefer inhaling smokes. They even hire bartenders of different nationality so def foreigner friendly.
  • Thursday Party, Hongdae and Corner Pub, Hongdae: also non-smoking. I grouped these two together because they have similar vibes. More lounge feeling and both have a beer pong table. It's packed with foreigners and bartenders are accustomed to speaking with foreigners.
  • a playground in front of Hongdae university: it's a gathering place for all sorts of foreigners in Hongdae. Drinks can be bought from a store next to the playground and ppl just drink outside. People are so much eccentric, unlike ordinary Korean people. Good place to catch a breath in-between bar hopping, clubbing.
  • Prost, Itaewon: I am not sure this this lounge is still a good place to go since the incident but it used to be. People are somewhat classy there. also non-smoking.

for racism, I think you'll have to be prepared since clubbing = drinking anyway. I've introduced the best foreigner friendly and non smoking venues but who knows(I am a Korean but still I've seen enough troubles), the people there are drunk. Try focus on mild, calmer activities at daytime where you can make Korean friends and try go night drinking with those who you have made connections with. We Koreans usually drink with friends; going clubbing is associated with somewhat bad/spoiled people do. It means going clubbing leads to seeing most extraordinary, eccentric people in Korea. It can be fun but it's far from safe. plus most Koreans want to have friends of different nationality anyway.

Even in Itaewon a lot of places won't let you in at the door bc of your age. There is JJ Mahoneys which is a small club attached to the Hyatt which is for older people.

Another option is to contact a promoter and book a table instead, pricey but that's generally the tradeoff if you still want to hang where all the young pretty people are.

gangnam apgujeong doesnt have that type of vibe bar/club scene. best bet would be itaewon. pretty much like the US. people are friendly, bar hopping common, and good mix of knatvies and expats in all age brackets. close to gangnam. 20min bus or taxi ride. although trying to get taxi to go home can be challenge. expect long wait and upcharge and grouchy drivers who wont take you. so try to grab one like an hour before last call.

Hongdae is full of rowdy late teens and early twenties looking to get wild.

Itaewon is full of foreigners looking to get wild.

Gangnam is full of mid to late twenties (with some money) looking to get wild.

Lots of fun. You will be hit on. Drink responsibly, practice safe sex.

I had sooo much fun when clubbing in Korea with my foreign friends! I even thought it was more fun than Latin American clubs (except for the music haha), but since it's so much safer, I felt free to have fun. Everybody will tell you to be careful, but I mean... you've been clubbing in Latam so I'm sure you already know how to hahaha. We went to Itaewon because my friends were a bit older and everybody said hongdae has more younger uni students. If you are all women, you will have free entry in almost every club, so you can go club / bar hopping until you find a place you like :) there are also some latin clubs there!

I’m skeptical of this list. The info for busan is quite inaccurate imo- many of these spots are bars only and are not characterized as clubs. Also, Non morde is well known for having a sign about not admitting people based on skin color (iirc it said brown or Indian people were not welcome- I forget exactly).

Agree that the question (where to find foreigner-friendly clubs) is asked frequently and so deserves a helpful list. However, I do not like how the description to this poster implies that these are the only places where one can reliably avoid a supposed "disappointing increase in discrimination in Korea." You do not have to stick to foreign enclaves in HBC or Hongdae to avoid discrimination in Korea.

Bars/Clubs as a 19 year old

Posted by homodiner · in r/koreatravel · 4 months ago

I was trying to search this reddit for advice about clubs and bars but have not been able to find much information on how that scene is for 19 year olds. I'm staying in Seoul and ideally the clubs would also be LGBTQIA+ friendly as I am a gay man (but lowkey I don't think that's gonna be a big issue because I look like any other Korean man 😭).

I hear there's a lot of bars/clubs that do age cut offs or are pretty disrespectful to foreigners so I would appreciate any advice!

Hi, you'll probably want to focus on clubs in the Itaewon area. A lot of foriegners and locals hang out in that area. itaewon is more or less the gay district for clubbing/bars (there's also an area called Jongno). If you google Itaewon (or Jongno), lgbtq, clubs, bars, you'll find a list. Good luck!

Mike’s Cabin seems to be the de facto foreigner club, you can always warm up at the Thursday Party and adjacent Cocky Pub too. Hongdae Park usually has some weird shit going down that you can watch with a beverage. Right next door to Monster Pizza there was a hip hop club (not sure if it’s still there?) that’s pretty good.

Thursday Party has plenty of Western guests but I wouldn't call them exactly foreigner "friendly."

I think most clubs in Hongdae are open to non-Koreans since it's such a tourist area anyway. It's just Gangnam where you have to worry about getting turned away based on your passport or drugged if you get inside.

Nah man, there's still plenty spots in Hongdae that turn foreigners away or make bullshit excuses about language issues etc. IT's ridiculous.

There's no age limits during weekdays in Hongdae. But if you want to clubbing in the weekend, then Itewon is a better choice.

I was there working this summer with a group of interns from the US who were much younger than me. We went to Hongdae a few times and I never had a hard time getting in at 35. Could be because I don’t act or look 35 or because I’m with a small group of people younger but I was never given a second look when they checked my passport.

Clubbing in Korea (Solo)

Posted by NothingButBoost823 · in r/koreatravel · 2 years ago

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to give a quick report of my clubbing experience in Korea solo as an older person (30M from US, but 31M international age) as a lot of people ask questions regarding nightlife especially around the 30 y/o mark. I stayed in Korea for 1 month solo traveling and went out to clubs in Hongdae (12 days), Itaewon (4 days), and Gangnam (2 days).

Genuinely Korea has some of the weirdest club vibes (in terms of getting in) that I’ve ever experienced. You just really never know what to expect. People continually state that if you go to ‘blank’ area you will be able to get in or you will be too old for another area. Honestly from my experience all of that doesn’t matter. In the end, it really just depends on the bouncers mood or judgement on any given night.

Hongdae: Hongdae is definitely a younger crowd, but it’s also the most fun imo. There is plenty of stages for dancing and there is always something going on every night. Your clothes will reek of smoke the next day because everyone’s smoking in almost every club so just be prepared for that. I will say that with clubbing in Hongdae I had to use the translator app more times than not when speaking to Koreans as most I encountered did not speak much English or did not feel confident enough to try. I went out to many clubs (over 12 nights) in hongdae (awesomered, B1, N1, Zen, Sinkhole, La bamba, and many more). I never got rejected despite what most people say about some clubs having an age limit.

Itaewon: Itaewon is an older crowd, but more like 25+ rather than low 20’s. If your goal is to talk and meet other people, Itaewon is probably the place. More people that I encountered here spoke English so it was easier to talk to people especially being a solo traveler. People stood around talking more often than dancing in most clubs and bars I went to, but it’s still a good time. I spent 4 nights clubbing in itaewon and honestly would have gone here more, but there were 4 instances where I got rejected from clubs which kind of killed my vibe. 2 different times the bouncer told me it was because I was alone (I was told if I bring a friend or another person and come back I could get in) and the other 2 times the bouncer just held up an X and did not give a reason. When I say that it really just depends on who the bouncer is and their mood I mean it. The 4 places I got rejected from I had previously been to and gotten into, but those nights they chose to deny me. The times I got in were on weekend nights and the times I got denied were like on a Sunday and Monday night which makes even less sense haha

Gangnam: there is an older and more variety of ages clubbing here. It’s really more of a social event club than a big party. It wasn’t really my type of setting being solo and having a girlfriend, so I didn’t enjoy it as much. I went here with a group of Korean guys I met at a club in itaewon, but if I was alone it’s probably harder to meet people. If you are wealthier, looking to date and/or looking for a more upscale clubbing experience you would probably like it here.

Other notes:

  1. If you get rejected from a club, try your best not to let it ruin your night or get you down. The few times it happened to me it seriously killed my mood and I debated just leaving, but of course decided against it and just went somewhere else (and had a great time). I never thought I would have been a person who felt that way previously, but it happened anyways. I’ve been clubbing in many different countries and never gotten rejected from a club before so it was a new experience lol
  2. If you are nervous about going out or don’t know where to go, book a pub crawl. They will bring you to a few bars and then 1 club (which you always will be allowed to get in). Sometimes the bars and clubs suck, but it at least allows you to meet other people and not have to worry about not being let in. It also gives you an experience of what night life is like in Korea so you know what to expect and feel more comfortable if you go out alone.
  3. I’m not sure the exact time the subway stops running (somewhere around 12/1), so if you stay out past that time you will either have to wait until 5am or take a taxi home. Most people and most places don’t really get busy until after 12 so if you are going clubbing this will be an every night issue.
  4. As a solo traveler, try to meet other people online, at your hostel or on hostel world that you can go out with. It will probably be a more comfortable experience for you especially if you get denied from a club. If you are a solo guy and trying to pick up girls, you will have much better luck if you are with someone else. Girls in Korea are always with a friend or two and are a lot less likely to entertain/speak with you if you are alone (especially because they aren’t going to leave their friend alone). Like I said I have a girlfriend, but I was frequently asked to be a wingman for the guys I was hanging out with or met out at the clubs. If you are a girl solo traveler, I have no advice about meeting other girls/guys while out other than going to the bar crawls. There are a lot of solo girl travelers and even groups of girls that you can talk/feel more comfortable hanging out with. There also korean guys and locals that go to the bar crawls so you could meet someone there.

These are just my experiences and I’m sure everyone will experience something different when they go! Clubbing in Korea is a great time and some of the most fun I’ve had going clubbing.

I barely ever had to pay a cover, especially in Hongdae. I think I had to buy a drink before getting in 1-2 times out of the entire time I was clubbing in Hongdae. I was asked a few times in itaewon to pay a cover though. It was like 10-20k won and included one drink.

Best bars and clubs in Seoul

Does anyone know the craziest or funniest bars and clubs in Seoul that are foreigner-friendly? A group of friends and I are traveling to Seoul tomorrow, and we’d love to have a wild night out.

If anyone knows of any good events or DJs playing, we’d be very interested in that too.

Even learning the basics of Korean will probably get you the furthest with locals. No one will be actively rude to you, except for racists whose minds wont be changed anyways. Stick to touristy places in Seoul / Busan and actually communicate to people in their native language and you won't have an issue.

Some clubs may not allow foreigners, especially in Gangnam. Still worth checking out though, especially if you are into EDM.

You all are the perfect age for Hongdae clubs, which are definitely geared more toward university-age students.

Itaewon is a lot of fun, idc what anyone says. It's also the place where you will most likely meet Koreans who both speak English and enjoy interacting with foreigners.

It doesn't have a ton of clubs AFAIK, but the area around Konkuk University Station also has a ton of bars and things to do at night. It's a little bit lesser known and I've never seen obvious tourists there, but every time I have gone, I have had a good time.

I guess the main thing is that nightlife in general starts later and ends later than in the U.S. Also getting a taxi at night can be tough. Make sure you have KakaoTaxi downloaded and be prepared to walk a bit away from the main areas to make it easier to get a taxi. Especially in Itaewon and Gangnam. I would also ask your hotel/hostel/Airbnb host if there are night bus options to get back at night.

Lastly, in regards to safety, Korea is very safe but I would still take every precaution you would in the U.S., especially in Itaewon.

In any case, you should be in for a good time.

Beautiful. Thank you so much for the detailed response! Is there something I should be looking out for specifically in Itaewon (drugs, violence, horny dudes, etc)?

2 upvotes on reddit
A
alittledanger · 2 years ago

You're welcome. Not many drug users in Korea. I've heard stories of rich Gangnam-types doing drugs but I've never personally seen it. Totally different than what I have seen in clubs in the U.S., Europe, or LatAm. Koreans know really little about drugs in general from my experience.

Plenty of horny dudes though in Itaewon lol, I mean I'm a 6'2 white dude and even I got groped by a shitfaced horny dude at Thursday Party once. It was very bizarre and if I were back in the U.S. I probably would have reacted way more aggressively than I did. But they will be present in Hongdae and Gangnam too. You should be fine though.

Violence is also rare. Usually, it is drunk GIs fighting amongst each other or old Korean men fighting amongst each other. Still relatively rare though these days. Going out in Korea is extremely safe overall, even in Itaewon.

A lot of guys who go to Hongdae clubs are there looking for hookups, and they typically seek out girls who are dressed more revealing. They literally stand around in the clubs looking for girls. Some can be kinda touchy as well, especially if it’s crowded and they can get away with it. So I would just keep that in mind and stay close to your girlfriend. I've always found Seoul to be very foreigner friendly. Or at any rate, very "white" friendly. Like anywhere else, there are certain clubs, etc . . . Which are more open to certain types of people. Let's be honest, worldwide, no place is very welcoming of people considered to be "unattractive". . . . Whatever that means by local standards.

Foreigner friendly edm nightclubs?

Posted by Affectionate_Gate129 · in r/seoul · 1 year ago

Was thinking of heading to club aura for a night out with my partner but I am 34 and Canadian. I was reading they do not let anyone south of 30 in the club and some foreigners have issues getting in...if so any other recommendations? I know clubs like octogan for edm have all disappeared. Thanks!

They are on the smaller side, are you looking for a megaclub? To be fair, most of the places you can find on https://ra.co/events/kr/seoul will be foreigner friendly

Thanks! Not necessarily a mega club but just a place that spins some progressive / mainstream edm that will take us. Hard to approach and ask a promoter at a nightclub being 34 (old...) and Canadian born chinese who does not speak any korean lol very intimidating... Could only find octagon online but too bad they closed! Appreciate the recommendations :)

I would also suggest searching around this subreddit and /r/korea https://www.reddit.com/r/seoul/comments/12mi95o/any_clubs_for_30_year_olds/jgbz6k3/?context=3 is probably a good thread

By the way, I'm 33 and didn't really have issues last summer, it really depends on the venue.

Best Foreigner- & Age-Friendly Hip-Hop Clubs in Seoul for Women in Their 30s

Posted by Careless-Advantage76 · in r/seoul · 7 months ago

Hi everyone!

My friend and I (31 & 32 germans but we look quite young for our age) are planning a trip to Seoul soon, and we’re looking for some great hip-hop clubs to check out. We’ve been to Hongdae in the past, but we’re starting to feel like the crowds there might be a bit too young for us now / also we are concerned if we still can get into the clubs anyway because of our age.

Could anyone recommend clubs that are foreigner-friendly and also age-appropriate for women in their 30s? We’re wondering if we might enjoy clubs in areas like Apgujeong, Itaewon, or Gangnam more. If you’ve got any specific club names or advice about the vibe in these areas, we’d love to hear it!

Thanks in advance for your tips! 😊

Just wanted to share my experience for anyone else wondering about this!

We didn’t have any issues getting into clubs in Hongdae—at least from my experience, if you’re a good-looking foreign woman, you likely won’t have trouble. That said, I honestly didn’t enjoy clubbing in Hongdae this time. We checked out Aura 2, Sinkhole, and another one, but the crowd felt way too young for me. Sinkhole had a few older people, but still, it wasn’t quite the vibe I was looking for.

On the other hand, I much preferred Itaewon. We had a great time—the crowd felt more age-appropriate, and we had no problems getting into any clubs. I especially liked Fountain and some of the gay clubs there (my best friend is gay therefore we mainly went there). If you're in your 30s and looking for a more balanced crowd, I’d definitely recommend Itaewon over Hongdae!

Hope this helps someone in the future! 😊

Definitely itaewon. Soul train isn’t really a club but they do play some good rap songs.

Gangnam is tailored more towards the Korean crowds and apujeong is also a bit more Korean.

Itaewon is probably your best bet being a foreigner and considering your age. Last time I was there the I went to la bam ba or something like that. Had some decent songs and vibes.

In Seoul for a couple of weeks and I figured I’d try out the night life. usually I’m more of a bar person, but I would like dance and unwind after a long week. Where should i go in terms of clubs, somewhere where you can dance and mingle with the people of the city (friendly crowd) . I heard some places have an age limit or dont take foreigners so I wona stear clear of those

Modeci and Channel 1969 in Hongdae are good for people who are there for the music rather than getting trashed with a big group of students, though the latter is kind of a live venue / club hybrid, so I would definitely check to see what's happening on a particular night. Seoul Community Radio in Itaewon is not a club, but dancing definitely happens and it's really easy to meet people there. Also in Itaewon, check the listings for Cakeshop if you want a more traditional club experience. Pistil and Beton Brut are small, but usually have good music. In Euljiro, The Edge is more of a bar-that-gets-clubby as the night wears on, and ACS, a little basement club, the best choice for an unusual, underground vibe, if that's your kind of thing.

All of these places would be good for someone your age. Steer clear of the big mainstream clubs in Hongdae and Gangnam.

Solo clubbing advice

Hi guys, I just arrived in seoul and am staying in Jungno-3. I would like to experience the clubbing here, but I'm afraid of going alone. I also don't know any Korean. Is it okay to club alone here?

Also any club recommendations? I want to go on Tuesday night, which is...today, in like 18 hours lol. Or tomorrow. I read some places don't allow foreigners or non korean speakers, but I think i can pass as one because people keep trying to speak with me in Korean. I am 29m btw. Thank you allll

Wondering about clubs in Seoul.

Posted by Pahkiss · in r/korea · 6 years ago

So me and my friends were planning to hit Octagon on thursday. That made me wonder about the rep. that the club has about being xenophobic, does anyone have experience about that?

Also as a plan B it would be nice to have location to aim for if octagon doesnt work out. It doesnt matter if the cluv isnt located near it.

Also outside of the casual edm clubs that go around, are there any that offer more heavy/alternative club experience?

The Ultimate Gangnam Nightlife Guide * Night Clubs , Lounges , Food & More

Posted by monster_pizza · in r/korea · 5 years ago

Lots of misconceptions about the nightlife industry especially revolving around Gangnam.

As someone that basically spends 24/7 in Gangnam, I thought I would post an overview of the reality of the nightlife scene here.

About me: Early 30s, Married. Previously worked for about 6+ years across various nightlife establishments around Gangnam while working for a large "unicorn" startup. Currently operating a small business around Gangnam, still active in the nightlife scene somewhat, and have my connections with the scene.

Lets get started.

Basically you can divide Gangnam into 3 main areas for nightlife.

  • Gangnam Station Area
  • Sinsa Station Area
  • Apugujeong Rodeo / Cheongdahm Area

https://imgur.com/7bROusP

Gangnam Station

Probably the most accessible, tons of bars, clubs, resturants and more.

Sinsa Station

Currently the hotspot for the younger rich crowd. Currently the hottest clubs are centered around the area along with lounges.

Rodeo/Cheongdahm

Not too much going on in Rodeo these days, Cheongdahm area is basically a playground for the rich though, with pricey establishments especially near the prima hotel / Hakdong사거리 area.

The two most popular activities in the area include clubbing & karaoke.

Karaokes

First lets talk about Karaokes. Think of them as a high-end 노래방 that noone really sings in. At the core karaokes are not "seedy" establishments. Yes you can request a "helper", basically an attractive early 20s female / male that will come pour you drinks and talk to you. But theres really nothing sexual going on here At most you'll hold hands. The waiters keep checking every once in a while, theres also a CCTV in the room, and the girls will get fired if they do anything "illegal" in the room. Sure you can try and get a number and do stuff later, but nothing really happens in the rooms besides light chatter.Actually lots of groups of girls will come for birthdays and stuff too, so will couples, etcbasically imagine a private area to drink and party with your friends. Karaokes are usually pretty luxurious too

https://m.blog.naver.com/PostView.nhn?blogId=sasaroro&logNo=220757089889&proxyReferer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F

^ There is an example. It can be seen as a party room basically for groups of friends to hang out. Alot of the clientelle is usually well off too, and the service is usually top notch. It's not seedy or dirty at all. + they usually have really good sound systems, and offer aux input. Like I said lots of couples come to hang out too for special occasions like birthdays etc, and its a good place to unwind and chill with friends.

Cost isn't too bad either: roughly 150k / bottle of whiskey , 40k / hour for the room. 50k/ hour for a "helper" if you want. Food is available too, and you can also order food such as pizza or literally anything you can think of the staff can acquire for you. My wife and I will meet up with friends once a month or so and hit up a karaoke at the end of the night. Usually we'll go with a group of around 6-7 people and we'll get some food, 2-3 bottles of whiskey and basically it'll come out to less than 100k a person.

Currently the top Karaokes include:

  • Chicago
  • Running Rabbit
  • Maldivestheres a bunch more too that are nice, but the above 3 i've found to be the best.

Room SalonsOkay now we're getting into the seedier shit. Room salons are divided into different categories too. Hardcore, 10%, 5%, shirts room, etcCouples will NOT go here lol. In fact its usually mostly groups of dudes that go. The buildings are unmarked too for obvious reasons. These establishments are basically illegal and can be considered "red light".Basically imagine a karaoke with much higher prices, and more "freedom". for obvious reasons the rooms are not monitored. With that said, basically you have two options, you can pay $$ for "2nd round" which occurs after the room time is up, or you can just simply hang out in the room. Usually touching is allowed, and in the case of hardcore ... shit gets crazy. Pricing for alcohol is the same, but the cost for companionship increases much more, along with the room cost. Basically for a shirts room you're looking at around 150k / hour per person. 5/10% around 200k / hour per person + extra if you want. and hardcore runs close to 600-700k an hour per person.

Nightclubs

Gangnam clubs are a bit different from Hongdae/Itaewon clubs, and are basically places for the rich to go and party. Gangnam clubs are unique in that the dance floor basically doesn't exist, and the layout is basically a maze of tables. People will stand on the tables and dance. It is recommended to get a table, and the pricing is pretty standard across clubs. Granted it is not that expensive to get a table, but some of the best tables can get pretty pricey. One bottle of basic alcohol (moet, absolute, skyy, etc) starts at around 200-250k. Most clubs have sets, and basically you can get about 4-5 bottles for under 1m. Higher priced bottles are available too including dom / armand etc

Lines are usually long, and noone pays cover charges. Basically everyone that goes clubbing has ties to a promoter, and using the promoters name they are able to enter as a "guest". Table service customers usually have a seperate shorter line.

You are basically paying for real estate at the club for the night. The closer you are to the DJ, the more expensive your seat is, and the easier it is to hang girls come on your table and dance (and drink all your alcohol lol)

Clubs are usually open Thurs~Sun, with Thurs/Sun being cheaper than Fri/Sat.

Tables are usually sold out around 9:30pm and operate on a bidding basis. For example interested parties will hit up their promoter with the seats they want, and their maximum bid, and the highest bidding team will get the table. The "auction" usually starts around 9:30pm. Sure you can get tables after 9:30pm but at that point it will basically be whatever is left over.

Club entry is very strict too. For guys you need to not be ugly. For girls you need to not be ugly. If you have a table it doesn't really matter though, you can show up in sweats and noone will blink an eye.

Another way to party is through a (Jogak) 조각. Basically, Lets say a table costs around 1m for the night, but you are only a group of 2 people or by yourself and obviously don't want to spend 1m on a table, what you can do is let the promoter know, and they will actually match you with other people in the same situation. The end result is usually around 5-6 strangers partying together, with the main focus being on picking up girls. Good promoters will actively go out and try to pick up girls to bring to your table also, so actually alot of times you can just end up hanging out, making new friends, and having girls picked up and brought to your table. Yeah it might sound strange to share a table with strangers, but actually its pretty fun, especially if you go with another friend, since most people come by themselves / group of 2, so they are also looking to make friends and party also. Plus since you're only paying around 100-200k a person its really not bad, if you consider that you get like 4-5 bottles of alcohol.

Also note: in the below when I say "table starts at 1m" that doesn't mean the table costs 1m. It means that basically you must order over 1m worth of alcohol to get that table.

Also with a group of around 6 people. If each person spends 150k that will get you guys around 5 bottles. Lets say 15 drinks per bottle = 75 drinks. Its really not bad, and in some ways cheaper than standing around the bar and getting drinks. But to each their own~~

If you're looking for a good promoter, shoot me a PM and I can get you in touch with people at basically any club who can help in booking / guest list.

In Gangnam the most popular clubs as of now are:

Flex

Located in Sinsa, Flex is the old Arena with a new name and "new' owner. Has two floors 1 more EDM and 1 for Hiphop. It gets super packed, and is open till like 1pm on weekends lol. Its pretty much the most popular club in Seoul right now, and theres tons of celebrity sightings. Weekend pricing for tables usually starts around 1m won for the hiphop room and 2m won for the EDM floor. Not really foreigner friendly. If you have a table they will let foreigners in. If you are attractive, and have NO UGLY PEOPLE IN YOUR PARTY you MIGHT be let in. But overall it is popular because the crowd is young, attractive, and rich. + the hiphop room is really fun and has a huge dance floor. The vibe is the hiphop room is more for pickups (picking up girls etc), whereas the EDM is more for flexing and dropping millions of won on bottles all night.

Face

Located in Gangnam Station, Face became really popular after the scandals earlier this year with gangnam clubs and alot of them shutting down. Right now its still "okay". Has two floors, 1 edm and 1 for hiphop also. Very narrow walkways, still pretty fun. Its open basically everyday of the week. Weekday pricing is cheap too, you can get a table for 1 bottle. Weekend pricing starts around 800k-1m for EDM room and 500k-700k for the hiphop room. A bit more foreigner friendly if you have a table, theres usually no problems getting in. The guards are a bit more lenient than Flex, but again don't be overweight / ugly and you'll most likely be fine. Overall, its a fun club, but the crowd is a bit younger (early 20s), the EDM is famous for pickups (the layout is basically made to support it), and the hiphop is a bit more open and more a good place to party with friends.

Intro

Located near Eonju Station, Intro is still one of the most popular clubs in Seoul. It is a hiphop club, thats kinda small but overall has the best crowd. The club is kinda small, but it has this cozy feeling lol. Weekend pricing starts around 1m. Not very foreigner friendly. If you're not asian + attractive, good luck getting in. Overall as someone that likes hiphop clubs I really like Intro but I'm not the biggest fan of their entry policies. Even foreigners with tables will be turned down which I think is stupid.

Local

Located near Gangnam Station. The old Mass. Reopened last week. Has a really good sound system. Seperate Hiphop and EDM zones. Haven't been yet but heard from friends that have gone that its clean and pretty chill. The layout is very wide so its not as claustorphobic as other clubs. Not sure about entry policy but knowing Mass, it should be NOT foreigner friendly (unless table). Will update after I visit. Pricing should be roughly 1m+ for weekends.

Label

Located near Sinsa Station. Good ol'e label. Reopened and is now called +label. EDM only. Basically a playground for the rich. Outside you will see supercars lined up, and while tables start at around 1m, you will see groups ordering 5m+ trains every hour. Basically, each time a group spends over 1m on a round, they will play a message on the led screen and bring out the champagne girls. At label you will see this happen basically every 10 minutes. The girls are probably the best quality out of any clubs. Foreigner friendly BUT it doesn't really matter, since the whole club is tables and theres basically no dance floor. No really to go without a table. Overall its fun, and you can meet alot of the VERY well-off crowd here. But no point in going without a table.

Octagon

Located near Hakdong Station. Lol Octagon. Lots of controversy around this one. Let me preface by saying it is NOT a bad club at all. BUT it is probably the most hated club in the Korean club scene. It basically gets rid of everything that makes gangnam clubs different, and then advertises it self as a gangnam club. Won some award a few years back and advertise it mostly to tourists that don't know much better. Has EDM / Hiphop. Basically similar to clubs abroad. Large dance floor, seperate VIP sections, etc. Apparently this club is popular with foreigners because they are the most lenient when it comes to entrance. The crowd is probably the lowest quality though out of all the other clubs due to the easiest standards to get in, but I've still heard stories of people getting turned down.Tables start around 400-500k for hiphop and around 700-800k for EDM. Overall not really popular with Koreans, i mean obviously the club is still going to be like 95% koreans but its mostly people not familiar with the clubbing scene, like its not a bad club, its just very different from the other gangnam clubs, and feels more like it belongs in itaewon / hongdae. I personally don't mind it and enjoy coming here every once in a while but it does feel vastly different and just seems off. I'll update this area later.

Club 88

Located near Sinsa Station. Supposed to open tomorrow. Being hyped up alot, will update once I've visited

Lounges

Lounges are similar to clubs, offer table service and usually popular before the clubbing time. Ex, 10pm-1am is the peak for lounges whereas clubs peak around 3am. many people will start their night at lounges before heading to a club. Lounges are chill because there is really no entry for requirements, usually no cover charges, and the alcohol isn't very expensive. They don't have the annoying bidding system for tables either like clubs do and its basically first come first serve. The below lounges are most popular right now:

Jay and Jason X

Located near Apgujeong Rodeo Station, * User comment* Just to add on for Jay x Jason since you didn't fill that in, it used to just be a music bar where you can request music to the staff there. It became very popular cause of the atmosphere and design. So that attracted lots of hot girls there. It used to be majority just hot girls chilling around. Then, Korean guys got a whiff of it and started coming in hordes hahaha. People started casually dancing etc and now it's become such a trendy club. Decent music, hot folks. They currently just opened a new branch right next to the original one.

Viewsic

Located near Sinsa Station, Hiphop Lounge. Has these really cool LED screens that surround the entire venue. Literally the whole place is surrounded by a giant LED screen that wraps around the venue. VIP area requires reservations, standard tables don't. VIP starts around 1m, standard tables are fine with 1 bottle (150k+). Has some cheaper bottles under 100k too. Great crowd, lots of celebrity sightings, dies out around 2am tho. The girls & guys here are probably in the top 10-15% attractiveness-wise. Lots of gyopos too (korean-americans) and english is pretty commonly heard. no cover charge, no smoking inside either. will edit more in a bit.

Rasputin

Located near Sinsa Station. Run by the guys who used to run D-bridge. Heard good things. Haven't visited yet, will update after visiting.

Food

After a night of drinking, nothing is more relaxing than some delicious food. here are the most popular 24 hour food spots with the upper class crowd.

세벽집

Located in Cheongdahm, open 24 hours. Michelen star IIRC. their 꽃등심 is amazing, and starts aroud 70k / 150g. Their 육회 is really good too. Lots of celebrity sightings, valet parking available, and often times a wait so plan accordingly. busy all the time.

will edit more in a bit

더큰집

Located near Hakdong Station, will edit in a bit.

Emoi

No 24/7 food guide is complete without Emoi. The one located near Gangnam station is a hotspot in the early hours (6-7am). Standard overpriced Pho. Its a cheap and good way to 해장 tho.

Drugs

Just say No. While I am not the moral police, Clubs have cracked down very hard. Not saying the scene doesn't exist, and that they aren't available, but I personally do not touch this shit as the penalties are very harsh. Also if you're caught at clubs, especially after the scandals of burning sun, you will be permanently banned and reported to the police. And no. Most promoters will not help you acquire as the penalties for dealing are even harsher.

Yeah this is my overview of the gangnam nightlife scene.I know i'm missing alot of stuff but I will constantly be adding updates here.

Feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions or shoot me a PM if you are curious about something.

Take care and have fun everyone!

Think this is sour grapes if you want, and maybe I'm just old, but these clubs and this scene sounds lame and obnoxious and full of people chasing exclusivity for exclusivity's sake.

You'd have to pay me to go to one of these joints.

I don’t think I’d enjoy it even if I could afford it. There’s a reason I don’t even live in Seoul, and it’s not money.

You hit the nail on the head. I’m from New Orleans and I’ve been dragged to a few Mardi Gras ball cocktail parties and ‘exclusive’ nights out at bourbon street balcony bars. Unironically the cheaper bars and clubs in the streets/slums were always far more enjoyable.

These people have so much to prove to each other and worship money. Plenty of people with money that don’t indulge in this. I can think of much better ways to blow a couple thousand than a $2,000 night club venture to show off to other wealthy friends.

In my opinion they couldn’t be more blind to the realities of what’s actually beautiful on this planet. But to each their own.

Also nothing against you OP. The night club owners / promoters are the real winners in this. Always respect for people earning a buck

Yeah if you don't like dancing and you're not trying to pick up girls, I don't really see what the appeal of a club would be, especially if you're not in your 20s and you've already experienced all that.

Most clubs play music so loud that conversation is difficult, so you're pretty much just paying a 500% mark up on booze to be in a crowded place where you have to struggle to talk.

Somehow this comment sounds most salty.

As a woman, not only I hate Gangnam clubs with a passion, I think there are serious issues that need to discussed and fixed, including some people's messed up views about women , money, etc.

I think this is a good thing that not everyone shares the same mentality that spending money to aggressively "pick up" girls (more like sexual harassment) or wait for the staffs to bring girls is "fun".

Honestly, I would donate them if I had 5m to throw.

for cheap haircuts, my tip would be to check on Naver maps and see if there are any coupons for first time discounts. You can often get 30~40% off on your first visit, and I sometimes take that deal when I don't need anything fancy.

South Korea isn’t traditionally a place with too many Caucasian expats if I’m not wrong, so this may be tricky. Just make sure to check their Instagram account and verify they have enough posts of white male customers and that you like what they’ve done with their hair. Try one of the salons around Gangnam or Itaewon.

Hongdae is the 'party street' of Seoul. There's a whole bunch of clubs here. Personally I haven't been to any as I'm not a club person but my friend has and has talked to me about a few. Mongs is her favourite. Wings is a extension of Mongs. She really doesn't like B1 because it's more of the 'I'm here to only get laid' vibe and that's not her style.

As for places to visit - what kind of things interest you?

1 upvotes on reddit
IllustriousVisit1174 · OP · 6 months ago

Museums, markets, architectural highlights, skyline views, bars, etc. I just want to go to clubs for a night out

Suspicious-Bit4888 · 6 months ago

There's a large war memorial museum in Yongsan that's pretty good.

For architecture there's the 5 palaces in Jongno. You can also visit Bukchon Hanok or Eunpyeong Hanok village to see traditional villages. If you're interested you can visit the Olympic Park in Gangnam that was built for the Asian games and the summer olympics.

For sky views I would recommend the Lotte World Tower and if possible the sky bridge tour. There's also the Namsan Tower. Both give amazing views of the city. The observation deck in Lotte World tower and N-Tower is usually open until around 11pm whilst the sky bridge usually closes around 7pm on weekdays.

Moving to Seoul soon

I will be moving to Seoul soon and will most likely have a job in Gangnam. I am curious about any foreigner friendly goshiwons that are nearby within 30-40 minutes there.

Thanks in advance for any and all recommendations.

What does foreigner friendly goshiwon means? You don't really need to speak to anyone at a goshiwons to be honest. There are a lot of goshiwons in Gangnam

Ah yes, there shouldn't be any problem. You just provide your passport and start renting, at least that was my experience when I first to Korea.

unless your really strap for cash i would pass on goshiwons. they are extremly small size only big eoungh for a single size bed, no ac, 10pm sound curfew so cant use showers during that time, walls so thin that you can hear your neighbor fart. etc

30+ Friendly clubs in Seoul

Hey! I'm 35F and considering clubbing in Korea. I think there was a list somewhere but I can't remember where. Are there any clubs or lounges that are 30+? I know a lot of places are under 30, but I know there are a select few. Type of music doesn't matter much as long as I can enjoy myself and have a good time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well the problem with foreigner friendly clubs is that 50-60 % of the people will be foreigner😅 most people want to experience Korean nightlife and not the foreign ones they could just experience in their home country’s ^^ that’s my experience. Clubs Like FF or the Thursday night party in hongdae for example were some of those

I've only been turned down once in Hongdae for being too old. Never been denied in Itaewon for age. If you like trance music there's a fairly popular DJ playing tonight in Itaewon at Off the Record.

I don't know, what you prefer. The best is: go out and discover. There are many small venues in the 2nd or 3rd floor, which I don't remember the name. Since I prefer electro, I had amazing experiences at Faust, Tunnel, Beton Brut..

Search this subreddit and /r/korea for clubs, people ask this question from time to time.
For example: https://www.reddit.com/r/koreatravel/comments/107xlc1/clubs_and_hangouts_for_the_55_to_65_crowdscenic/

The responses are mostly by people in their late 30s early 40s so close enough.
