TL;DR: Itaewon is the most foreigner-friendly district for nightlife in Seoul, with numerous clubs and bars welcoming non-Koreans. Recommended venues include Cakeshop, Thursday Party, and various spots in Hongdae like FF and Madholic. While Gangnam tends to cater more to locals, Itaewon offers a vibrant mix of expats and locals, making it ideal for a fun night out.
Foreigner-Friendly Clubs in Itaewon
Itaewon is widely recognized as the go-to area for foreigners looking to enjoy Seoul's nightlife. The district is known for its diverse crowd and welcoming atmosphere, making it less likely for visitors to face discrimination compared to other areas like Gangnam or Hongdae 2:2. Popular clubs include:
Clubbing in Hongdae
While Itaewon is the primary hub for foreigner-friendly clubs, Hongdae also has its share of options. Clubs like FF and Madholic are recommended for their good music and mixed crowds 9:1. However, Hongdae is generally considered more youthful, catering primarily to college students, which may not appeal to everyone
7:2.
Safety and Atmosphere
Most commenters agree that Itaewon is relatively safe for foreigners, although some caution about potential unwanted attention from locals, particularly towards women 4:5. It's advisable to stay aware of your surroundings and avoid overly aggressive situations. Many clubs have a relaxed vibe, allowing patrons to enjoy themselves without feeling pressured
3:1.
Recommendations for Specific Interests
If you're looking for LGBT-friendly spaces, Itaewon is also home to several inclusive venues where you can feel comfortable 3:1. For those who prefer a more laid-back experience, consider visiting bars that offer live music or themed nights, which can provide a different atmosphere than traditional clubs
2:4.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Itaewon stands out as the best choice for foreign-friendly nightlife in Seoul, with a variety of clubs and bars that cater to different tastes and preferences. Whether you're looking for a high-energy club scene or a more relaxed bar atmosphere, you'll find plenty of options to enjoy your nights out in this vibrant district.
I plan to go out alot but I'm looking for some good clubs. (Not trying to do the nasty but men will be men lol) im just looking for a place that i can drink and have fun. I don't plan on going to hongdae clubs bc I've heard horror stories unless someone actually knows a good place that you won't be bothered much. And ik itaewon is alot more foreigner friendly especially clubbing. As far as I know gangnam is not the most foreigner friendly? So suggestions let me know also tell me where to stay away from!!!
aaah there was a post about this. one sec
My friends and I are planning to go to Korea next year, and we're wondering if you guys can recommend clubs that are open on weeknights and are foreigner-friendly in Seoul. We still don't know where we'll be staying in the city, but all suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!
Theres a lot of foreigner friendly clubs in Itaewon and thats the best district if you are looking on the weekdays
That also seems to be where the least friendly ones are.
Anyone know which one this is?
The thing is Itaewon is generally the most friendly towards non Koreans. Other hotspot areas such as Gangnam are mostly local crowd. You could try hongdae too. There will always be some clubs not welcoming of foreigners but as a general vibe, Itaewon is hands down most foreigner friendly
Could be Made itaewon, they stopped allowing in foreigners completely.
Important question: how old are you?
we're around 22 - 24
You should stay in Hongdae to have options at night easily available. It won’t be too rowdy crowded on weekdays, but many places are I fact open and you can still turn up haha. Same for Itaewon. In general, only the biggest of big clubs are open on weekdays (and not necessarily every weekday - check carefully).
What gender? If you're both women and attractive, you should have no problem getting in at even the most xenophobic clubs.
> we're around 22 - 24
So -2 years old?
might want to check out indieinvite. has selection of weeknight events in seoul, foreigner-friendly, live music
Yes, some clubs will not let foreigners in. It’s okay, us foreigners have our own clubs!
Just not fountain
im not looking for gay clubs but just somewhere where me and my friend won’t (lower chance) be hate crimed. i heard itaewon is foreigner friendly? is the place back in business or hongdae is still the place? thanks!
Hongdae has a lot of clubs they will tell you if it’s foreigner friendly before you go in. I actually tried to go to this EDM place last night and was told Korean only but itaewon, is always a safe bet
Itaewon has plenty, actually every club in Itaewon is somewhat LGBT friendly probably
check r/koreatravel someone posted a list a few weeks ago
will check thanks!!!!
Rabbit Hole
I'm not LGBT myself, so it can be inaccurate, but;
Yes, Itaewon is indeed nice place for LGBT friendly clubs or bars. It's more 'full of foreigners' rather than 'foreigner friendly'
I believe they reopened in Hongdae.
You should also look for 신림, Sillim, too.
Mind you, Koreans doesn't really 'care' about others', especially foreigners, so don't worry too much on hate crimes.
that’s reassuring. thank you!!!
So me and my friend, both 20 years old, both women old are visiting Seoul in May. Can you name some recommendations for clubbing, esp for woc. I know they seem to have issues with racism in general so we are looking for recommendations regarding foreigner friendly clubs. Thank youu.
There is a YouTube channel called Sisilessthan3 (Hopefully I typed that right) She gives a list of the poc foreigner friendly clubs on her channel. Hopefully that helps
thank you, i will check that channel out!
Your welcome
Hongdae near Hongik University is always fun. I’m a foreigner and always have a blast there!!
Someone created a list of clubs and bars that are good for POC. Here is the link
this is very helpful, thank you :)
Please also note any risks and dangers you might have going to a club in korea.
Even if you can enter a foreigner friendly club there are always predatory locals who assume you an easy target.
Unfortunately the general mindset these local guys have against foreigner women is that they are easy to bed and will put out easily too and all they have to do is buy you a drink to seal the deal. I'm not sure where this idea stems from but its the general idea they all have.
Personally had a friend had this happen to them at the club and because she wanted to make it very clear she was not interested in his attention he dropped his cigarette ashes onto her leg for rejecting him.
Not to say you should change your plans or anything but to be aware things can happen and make sure you keep an eye on each other through the whole night.
Also clubbing attire is a lot more understated then you'd think compared to western ones so you'd be okay with a cute top and skirt and minimal makeup
Apologies i have no suggestion for any clubs by name. But incheon is a pretty active foreigner friendly hub but it will be 1.5hrs away from seoul in location
42yo American male, but looks much young according to others. Looking for some clubs/bars to enjoy the vibe and drink. Preferably in the gangnam/apgujeong area. I've heard there are age and foreigner discrimination running rampant. Any tips on good places? BTW, Hongdae is a hard pass for me. I hear the crowd is extremely young.
gangnam apgujeong doesnt have that type of vibe bar/club scene. best bet would be itaewon. pretty much like the US. people are friendly, bar hopping common, and good mix of knatvies and expats in all age brackets. close to gangnam. 20min bus or taxi ride. although trying to get taxi to go home can be challenge. expect long wait and upcharge and grouchy drivers who wont take you. so try to grab one like an hour before last call.
In Apgujeon try Soho Lounge, Safari social bar, and Times
Walked around itaewon 2 nights ago, seemed very fun! Gonna go there one of the coming days i think :)
Don't be so thirsty, brother.
This. the more you run after the vagina, the further the vagina runs from you
Even in Itaewon a lot of places won't let you in at the door bc of your age. There is JJ Mahoneys which is a small club attached to the Hyatt which is for older people.
Another option is to contact a promoter and book a table instead, pricey but that's generally the tradeoff if you still want to hang where all the young pretty people are.
Hey!! I’m in my early 30s (Australian, female) What are some clubs in Itaewon and Apgujeong which welcome people in their 30s and foreigner friendly? My friends and I have diverse music taste so it doesn’t really what kind of music is played. TIA
I’ve never been rejected in apgujeong and that’s my spot every weekend (31f) i think i’ve been to almost every club there with no issues, you’ll be fine. once i did have to change my shoes because they were open toed heels and they didn’t want to assume liability if i fell while drunk lmao. that’s the only instance of getting stopped at the door there i’ve had
You have any recommendations for good spots in Apgujeong?
don't wear crocs, either haha
That is just normal advice at any time.
Oh that’s such a relief. Thank you so much!
have fun!
I'd say pretty much all the clubs in Itaewon are a go. Don't think I've ever turned down for being too old or a foreigner. At least, nothing that I can remember.
Happened to me tonight. Over 30 isn't allowed at Waikiki Beach
That's never happened to me
A buddy is in town and wants to go clubbing in Itaewon. Problem is he's over 45. Are there any clubs we can get into? Loud music and dancing would be great!
Itaewon is less likely to card you than Hongdae. I heard of people being excluded from clubs in Itaewon for looking old, but it is not the norm. Itaewon is where Koreans of all ages come out to meet foreigners. So, you might be fine.
You must understand that Hongdae was set up for trendy college students. I was about to write "Carding Station Central" because Hongdae is where more complaints happen about being carded for being too old or rejected for not being Korean. Hongdae started out as an extension of the universities that are nearby, with a 19-23 age group, more or less. The reasoning is that it should stay that way.
Itaewon grew out of the US Army. It grew as a response to the needs of military men, who were, by definition, foreign. Then English teachers started coming in, adding to the mix. Later on, Muslims and Africans came. So, it began to be seen as a foreign area and a place for Koreans who were "different." That is why Itaewon has a small section crowded with gay bars. But you also have more Koreans who want to meet foreigners.
Good luck finding a dance floor in Itaewon. Tell me how you get on.
koreans don’t come out to itaewon to ‘meet’ foreigners…
You don't, but that's okay.
If he doesn't look like an ajusshi, he mighr pass.Last time I went clubbing in Itaewon was last year. I was 49, but no gray hair and I don't wear a scarf 😅.
G-Dragon wears a scarf. 😉
lol, I went with a different friend a few months ago to Fountain. The bouncer glanced at my id and was about to wave me through, until he saw my ahjussi friend.
I’ll make sure my friend leaves his scarf at home!
Any recommendations on clubs?
That makes sense. I’ve only tried Itaewon once before, and my companions, uhm… let’s just say they are comfortable telling dad jokes. Hopefully my buddy and I give off a different vibe!
Any good edm in Itaewon?
Nyapi was cool, there were a few more that I can’t recall, but resident advisor should have most of the shows
If 45 is too old in Korea - where do older people go then? That´s a business opportunity:-)
Polly's Kettle let me in, grey hair and all.
It is still open?????????
my friend and i are visiting seoul in mid June and staying at hongdae and we’re looking to experience the night life there! since it’s gonna be me and her, are there any clubs that are considered decent for foreigners? my friend wants to visit gay clubs too :)
hey!! i'm traveling alone to seoul (june ~ august) and would love to hang out with you and your friend :D i was looking to find people that would be down to go to clubs haha
heyy!! hahaha sure we would love that! the more the merrier :) wanna pm?
just pmed you :))
We are staying in hongdae now and have gone to club aura quite a bit. I read a post in here saying it wasn’t a great club but not sure why they are saying that..really good music (edm/house/hip hop/pop mixes). Younger crowd for sure (20’s). We also tried madholic and it was a tighter space. Good music (hip hop and pop).
ahhh hope you’re enjoying thus far! i’ve read about aura being a not so good club too…we’ll check both clubs out thank you!!
Having the best time
Any particular type of music/atmosphere you guess are looking for?
hmm most probably clubs with good crowds and good music like rnb, hip hop and kpop!
Hey guys! My bf and I are going to Seoul for the first time this summer and are really excited to check out the nightlife. We are NOT Korean and ik how it be out there so can some please recommend us some foreigner friendly clubs and bars in Hongdae/Itaewon. Just some places where we would be welcomed (and allowed to go in LOL) and/or where other travelers, foreigners would hang out plus where good international/diverse music is played lol. Thanks in advance :)
(Btw we are 23F and 24M)
There is a club literally called "인클”, short for "International Club". Theres a lot of foreign students therr
How old are you guys?
23 and 24!!
Ok u wont be too old for hongdae lol. Sorry no specific recommendations but you wont have age issuss
Well if u like Latina clubs la Rosa and La bamba. But if u like rap b1 and I thinks it’s called 25
Will check these out fs!! Thanks sm
In Hongdae, try FF, Madholic, or Gopchang Jeongol for a mixed crowd.
Thank u sm for this!!
Before reading it, I'm letting you know that this is written purely based on my opinion as a local Korean:)
If there are any other clubs you'd recommend adding, or if you have any thoughts or opinions, please feel free to share them on comments!
Cakeshop is about a 5-minute walk from the main club street. Although it might seem farther on a map, you’ll find the Cakeshop sign just a short walk from Itaewon station Exit 4.
Cakeshop Seoul hosts talented DJs from around the world, playing a mix of house, hip-hop, and other great sounds that keep the vibe going all night.
Unlike many other clubs in Itaewon, Cakeshop has been going strong for over 10 years. It’s even attracted some of Korea’s biggest celebrities, who’ve been spotted there over the years. From time to time, well-known rappers put on live performances, making it a great spot to drop by and have fun. The entry fee is around 15,000 won per person.
Fountain is right in the heart of the club street, just behind the Hamilton Hotel. It’s directly across from Waikiki Pub. One unique thing about Fountain is that you’ll need to climb a long set of stairs to get inside
Fountain isn’t just popular because it’s a foreigner-friendly club but it’s also a favorite among locals, which is why I recommend this place. It’s one of the biggest and most visually impressive clubs in Itaewon, making it a great spot to meet both Koreans and foreigners. Once inside, head left for EDM musics, or go right for hip-hop sets. Plus, there are bars on both sides, making it super convenient to grab a drink whenever you want.
Frost is located just to the right of Fountain Club. As soon as you head up the alley on the left side of the Hamilton Hotel, you’ll spot the bright building that is Fountain right away.
Prost isn’t a club but more of a lounge bar where you can dance, drink, and even order food. While the food and drinks are on the pricier side, the stylish interior and spacious layout make for a lively and fun atmosphere. The music is a mix of K-pop, hip-hop, and other genres, and you can move between the first and second floors. On weekends, there’s always a long line after 10 PM, so if you don’t like waiting, it’s best to go early and grab a spot. Prost is popular with both locals and foreigners, making it a great place to meet new people, including Korean locals. If you’re not too worried about spending, it’s definitely worth ordering some drinks in here.
Prost gets way too crowded during peak times on the ground floor
I'm so glad I am old enough to have zero interest in 'hot bars'.
None of these recommendations are really “unique from a local Korean”
They are well known names for years
And even the “real hidden Korean spots” don’t want foreigners so 🤷🏻♂️
Debating if I should stay longer to go to a club or sauna. I would visit Taiwan instead. Based on what I’ve read, many places will only accept you if you are fit or good looking if a foreigner. Has anyone been to Shelter, the Eagle or Vault Seoul? I would consider myself average without any Korean lol. Would you skip it and enjoy Taiwan instead?
If you're white then Taiwan is ok but if you're other Asian who's not fit and pretty, Taiwan is not for you either (unless you're a goodlooking bear). Korea and Taiwan are at the top of being lookist. Better head to Thailand then
And if you have a female friend, it’d be really difficult to allow them to grant entrance. I was working there and had a Korean girl with me and they tried to charge her twice the cost to try shoo her off.
I’m not experienced with gay venues in Seoul but know Taipei is way much easier for anyone.
Taiwan definitely not as harsh as korea but those 2 are the most difficult if you're not at least a 6+ with a good body
I agree with some of these posts. Korea and Taiwan are white man obsessed. Quite sad to be honest. I’ve met some hot caramel skin South East Asians who also confirm those experiences.
I myself am half white/Asian. I get stupid comments like “you’re white enough I guess” to “you look too Asian for me.” Haha 🤣
Of course not everyone is like that. And also. Not everyone there looks like K-Pop models. That’s a bold face lie. 🤷
As someone who’s Asian who’s gone to Europe. Lemme tell you if you’re Asian and you’re not skinny and young or a buff masculine Asian you ain’t even getting in the club. It’s just interesting seeing the same energy. Guess it’s a world issue.
Yes Taiwan and Thailand way better for gay scene
I've always found Seoul to be very foreigner friendly. Or at any rate, very "white" friendly. Like anywhere else, there are certain clubs, etc . . . Which are more open to certain types of people. Let's be honest, worldwide, no place is very welcoming of people considered to be "unattractive". . . . Whatever that means by local standards.
So me and my friend, both 20 years old, both women old are visiting Seoul in May. Can you name some recommendations for clubbing, esp for woc. I know they seem to have issues with racism in general so we are looking for recommendations regarding foreigner friendly clubs. Thank youu.
I am a brown person and was there with my brother 3 weeks ago. We had heard about racism etc before..but once there? None of it at all. I had more racism in the US or Europe than there.
As for clubs i went to a couple in Hongdae and they were pretty fun.One was called funky Macaroni in particular had pretty good music
Hongdae: There are four really large Korean universities in the area so the crowd is younger. Closer to your age
Gangnam: Is more expensive than Hongdae but the overall quality is probably better. The crowd is slightly older on average, but there are plenty of young college-age people who party there as well. The atmosphere is much different from Hongdae. Think of like all the rich, preppy people from your high school. They moved on to college and now party here.

Others:
Apgujeong rodeo: There used to be some lounges and decent LP-bars here.
Shinchon: Right next to Hongdae. Very young crowd, lots of places to eat. Decent hookah bars and some smaller clubs.
In Hongdae it is pretty typical to go club hopping, go to Zen 1, Zen 2, B1, Attention, etc. In all those you don't have to pay entrance fee and the queue is short. You get the "stamp" and you can go to another. Also, some of them give you 1 free drink.
Be aware that almost all clubs in these areas, smoke is allowed, and the day after you will have to make a laundry of whatever you wore since the smell is unbearable lmao.
In Attention (Hongdae) and in 1 club in Gangnam (i don't remember the name) I got the entrance denied for being a foreigner or not having Korean residence card. I guess it all depends at what time you enter, like, if it is late night or barely 11/12.
Also, in Gangnam we went to one that only accepted people with a table booked (table was like 400.000 won per person, which is insane, but maybe it was because it was too late...
Have a fun time!!
One more question: Is 28 too old to go clubbing?
I don't get if you can smoke in clubs why people throw fits if people smoke in general
I am planning a trip to Korea in April, what places are great for bar hopping? And what is an absolute no for foreigners?
Hongdae. Also, depending on where you go I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily racist. Hotel booking clubs may not be as down to serve you but it’s more of a language and understanding of how they work
I used to be a clubhead in Korea. Here's my two cents:
for racism, I think you'll have to be prepared since clubbing = drinking anyway. I've introduced the best foreigner friendly and non smoking venues but who knows(I am a Korean but still I've seen enough troubles), the people there are drunk. Try focus on mild, calmer activities at daytime where you can make Korean friends and try go night drinking with those who you have made connections with. We Koreans usually drink with friends; going clubbing is associated with somewhat bad/spoiled people do. It means going clubbing leads to seeing most extraordinary, eccentric people in Korea. It can be fun but it's far from safe. plus most Koreans want to have friends of different nationality anyway.
Out of interest, would you care to share what the "incident" you're referring to at Prost is?
Not Prost specifically- the Halloween incident in itaewon where over 100 people died
Me and my friend came to Seoul for a week. We planned to go to Hongdae or Itaewon to meet locals and go to clubs or bars. But my friend got sick and now I’m alone. So I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to go to Hongdae/Itaewon bars and clubs on my own. What would you recommend me? Maybe some exact places?
If you are a male, then there isn't an issue going to clubs/bars alone. If you are female and attractive, then a guy might just drag you away/be very forceful with you.

If you are alone, my suggestion is to go to a Language Exchange meetup at meetup.com and join one of their language exchange + clubbing events. You should be able to meet both Koreans and Foreigners and hang out/get to know some people before going to the club with them.

Stay safe.
Yep. I’m 23, male. Could you please recommend me some clubs? Not ones for rich kids showing off their wealth. Just some with attractive people having a good time
Depends what you are looking for. Usually 20-25 crowd hangs out in Hongdae while 25-30 hang out in Gangnam. You can think of it as college students like to go clubbing in Hongdae while older people like to hang out in Gangnam. Usually ~30 is the age limit for clubbing but if you are attractive/look young enough/well dressed enough then there is no problem.

Frankly, Gangnam has more attractive females because usually 25-30 year old females in Korea take care of themselves better (makeup, fashion, fitness) than those still in University. Also because a lot of the "working" girls tend to go clubbing in Gangnam.

Anyhow, I recommend Hongdae, and usually IIRC there is a 20$ club pass that lets you in most of the clubs in Hongdae the first or last Friday or Saturday of the month (can't remember as they change this from time to time.)

Or, join the language exchange meetup + clubbing event. I'd recommend this instead of going alone.
> If you are female and attractive, then a guy might just drag you away/be very forceful with you.
That's so far from reality it shows this person was never outside in nightlife before. That happens when you get all your information from biased agenda-pushing media publications.
Nice try. You have obviously never went clubbing in Gangnam before.
Don't go to a bar called "Thursday Party" unless you want to be around American, Australian and British expats. Want to be around the timid foreigners who are afraid of being rejected on the door of a club, go there. That's pretty much the #1 spot for meetup groups. Usually starting and "ending" there at the same time.
I'd recommend search for Noise Basement 2 and there that is where all the Hongdae clubs are pretty much. NB2 is nice, though a lot of places are very similar there, just choose by what you like from the outside as you will pass places to go there anyways. Aura can be nice as well (though Aura has a higher attractiveness standard, means if it gets later you'd require to be more attractive to get in), cocoon can be nice, all depends on the day, the people, you.
Than another day just search for Soap in Itaewon, and all around it are the Itaewon clubs, same game there.
You can totally go there alone. Depending on you, you may be able to join a group of Koreans on the streets. Though, keep in mind, Korean nightlife dating game is harsher than Western. You'll realize anyways.
What do you mean when you say “harsher”? Drinking much more alcohol? What should I be ready for?
It's what the kids in here call "forcing women to go with them" "pulling them", it's actually an expected nightlife dating behavior, being more harsh in nightlife, more pushy. Women are also more pushy in return, in majority, though doesn't mean that you may approach someone who rarely goes out by accident or is simply differently socialized.
You'll most certainly observe it anyways, so, nothing to care about for you. Just don't get culture shocked and get your mood influenced by scenes like that.
I am going to visit Seoul alone early next year for about 3 weeks. Next to the more cultured stuff I might also want to try out the infamous Seoul if possible.
Why I say, if possible, you might ask? Well, that's simple. I am quite high in my 30s already and I have read that it might be difficult to get into some clubs when over 30. Being a foreigner and over 30 are too reasons already why I might not be allowed to enter.
Do you guys know some clubs that might be a bit more tolerant towards older foreigners are would it be smarter to forget the clubs and check out some other venues instead.
Would be grateful hearing some opinions on that topic.
edit: thanks a lot for the replies so far.
As other have said, normally Itaewon would be your best bet.
It's not impossible in Hongdae.. though be prepared that some clubs *might* turn you down. I went to Seoul this October and one of my foreign friends that I got to know there had no problems at all, despite being 36 and looking his age.
Thanks for the info. I think I will check out both areas of the city Itaewon and Hongdae. Maybe things in Itaewon have normalized again when I come in come to Seoul.
Are there some specific clubs in Itaewon or Hongdae you would recommend?
That really depends on what you're looking for..
For clubbing in more into HipHop (i'm in my early 20s)
In Hongdae some foreigner friendly clubs are FF (more Pop), B1, Zen1/2 (bar during the week, you'll notice the difference lol), A:tension (next to b1). You should get into all of them.
Bars: Corner Pub, 도깨비 (Goblin), Thursday Party.
As for Itaewon.. I don't know how it's looking over there after what happened. So can't comment on that.
It'll be harder now after the Itaewon incident. The other main party district is Hongdae which is a uni - mid 20's crowd. During normal times you would've been fine in Itaewon.
Thanks, for the info. I have already thought that the tragic Halloween incident would affect things. So Itaewon would be the place to go other normal circumstances while Hongdae is out the question because this area is just suitable for the younger crowd?
Yes indeed you're correct. Some clubs like Zen2 and Cake Pop in Hongdae will probably let you in so hope is not lost, you can still have fun. Bouncers don't just look at age, they'll also look at the group you come in with and people's attractiveness. A bit sad, but if you get rejected at one just move on to the next. Have fun mate!
I’ve gone out with my mid-30s friends in Hongdae and Gangnam, and the places we went we never had a problem getting in.
Never had an issues with this. Just go to Hongdae area and relieve your old college days lol then quickly realize you are too old to stay up all night and the music is too loud.
This could really happen that I realize that I am too old for that lol. I also have not planned to out more than once. I just want to spend on Friday or Saturday night to see the infamous nightlife in Seoul once.
You’re in your 30s and never had an issue about your age at clubs?
None. Heck i even gone to old school Korean clubs where the old adashi and onma dance to old Korean tunes from 70s, drink the soju , cheap korean beer, eat fruit platters and chain smoke and relieve the old days. What a great experience !
Had no problems...was there at 39.
Hongdae is the 'party street' of Seoul. There's a whole bunch of clubs here. Personally I haven't been to any as I'm not a club person but my friend has and has talked to me about a few. Mongs is her favourite. Wings is a extension of Mongs. She really doesn't like B1 because it's more of the 'I'm here to only get laid' vibe and that's not her style.
As for places to visit - what kind of things interest you?
Museums, markets, architectural highlights, skyline views, bars, etc. I just want to go to clubs for a night out
There's a large war memorial museum in Yongsan that's pretty good.
For architecture there's the 5 palaces in Jongno. You can also visit Bukchon Hanok or Eunpyeong Hanok village to see traditional villages. If you're interested you can visit the Olympic Park in Gangnam that was built for the Asian games and the summer olympics.
For sky views I would recommend the Lotte World Tower and if possible the sky bridge tour. There's also the Namsan Tower. Both give amazing views of the city. The observation deck in Lotte World tower and N-Tower is usually open until around 11pm whilst the sky bridge usually closes around 7pm on weekdays.
Reading reviews it seems Hongdae is too young a crowd. Would you reccomend Jongro or Itaewon for an English speaking foreigner? Or somewhere else? Possibly rolling solo.
I’m early 30s and I’ve had no problem in hongdae
I loved staying in Hongdae and I am not young! It depends on people’s priorities but the lively vibe, street music, and restaurant choices in Hongdae met my needs. I also stayed in Jongno and that was great too for exploring all the great areas around there. I think you can do well in any of the places you are considering.
Thank you for your reply!
Itaewon or Gangnam.
This right here even sinsa/ rodeo has some nice spots
Jongro and plus Euljiro is good local option!
There is a pub in Itaewon, called Shenanigans. Good people, good staff, fun atmosphere.
I've heard of it. I'll definitely stop by. Thanks.
I live in NYC and haven't had any issues getting into clubs, but am in Seoul for the week on my own so not interested in hypey places in Hongdae especially if they're picky with foreigners/anyone over 30.
I love a good bar scene where am more interested in meeting people than just dancing (although I'm down for both).
A bit late but if you want to meet people, South Side Parlor is a great spot or walk away little bit further up hill to HBC (해방촌) and drop by Social Haven.
Social Haven is a great Aperativo bar and have lots of foreigners and locals come for spritz by the hill. Met a lot of my good friends there too.
I'm 36 and bald. Have zero issues getting into anywhere in Hongdae. Granted, I'm still the oldest mofo anywhere I go 😅
You might like Glam, posh-ish cocktail bar that plays deep house
Damn it, where was this a month ago..
Truth is if you look good, most places will let you in despite being early 30's
Yeah Itaewon Glam is the best for this (for classy hunting) or Thursday party for cheap hunting
First time travelling to Seoul. Randomly booked a hotel near Hongdae without really looking into it besides food options - obviously a huge mistake given my age (47). Not that it matters too much because I'm going to be exploring different areas. But I'd like to find a couple of nice vibey spots to chill and socialise at night. Don't really care about the drink prices or the music, as long as there's a decent vibe.
Man the silence here is dispiriting
Yeah nothing really like in seoul, but try and meet some women randomly and albeit they can take you around...
I have read online to get some sense of places to go clubbing at night but then it seems some of these places may have dwindled after the Halloween tragedy of Itaewon since they're in that area. Can anyone recommend a club that would be okay for foreigners but currently active? And any LGBT club recs?
I agree with the comment above that Itaewon is getting busier. I’ve been going to Itaewon most weekends lately and on Saturday just past it was the busiest I’ve seen it in a while. All the bars/ clubs I went to were packed and even heading home at 7am I was shocked that so many people were still out and about
Which clubs though?
Clubs.. Gathering is always my go to, Cakeshop, Soap, Fader if it’s busy. Bars.. there’s a lot but I like Danco, Atelier, Jack’s bar is fun, lit lounge
I really don’t understand all these people saying Itaewon is dead. I’ve been going there almost every weekend and all the clubs are packed. Just this Saturday I left a club at 4:30 am and it was still going strong. For LGBTQ clubs go to homo hill in Itaewon.
Which clubs rhough?
Electronic music: Faust, Cakeshop, Volnost. Gay clubs with pop music and EDM: Eagle, Gym, King.
The few places open may be packed because of lack of options.
But still far from “dead” like many people pointed out on this sub.
After three weeks partying in hongdae, I consider myself an expert in recommending free entry dance clubs in the area. Club ff, gogos, zen bar, sinkhole, xx, b1, and prolly more but I could only go so many. Because of my age (35), I feel that my favorite party spot is no longer suitable for me (surprisingly I was still allowed to enter all the places).
I wanna go to itaewon from this week onwards, especially on weekends, so considering my preference for hongdae bars and clubs, are there any recommended free entry ones in the area where I can meet more foreign people? Thanks in advance hyung nims
you could try gathering, cakeshop, lit lounge, fader, danco
I will! Thank you so much for the info Cheers
You just realized that Hongdae is "no longer suitable" for you because of your age, when you've just spent three weeks clubbing there? How does this make any sense? 🙄
Actually I got denied by three clubs last night for reason “I have age” all of a sudden. Talking to ppl in line and having them look at you retracing your steps is kinda embarrassing.. not sure I want to experience that again so yeah
Which clubs were that?
Throwaway account due to the topic. Some of my (female) friends got very excited about the Hongdae clubbing scene, as it's known for girls being hit on easily. I was wondering if there is anything like that that'd be interesting for me as a guy.
I'm guessing that there is not, and I would have to do the hitting on, so then where would be the best place for that? I've been recommended Itaewon earlier, but not sure what exactly to expect.
im always curious what makes accounts get insta suspended ??
This is a bit late but does anybody want to go out tonight to a bar or club? I (20M) am here in Seoul for just a couple days and decided last minute to go explore the nightlife, yet I’m not sure where to go and have nobody to go with😭I’m thinking Hongdae or Itaewon, any suggestions?? My friends from back home have recommended me the clubs Mong’s and B1. thanks!!!
(20m) Same here just got to Seoul the other nite, fams still in Ulsan till Thursday so I’m free to go for some drinks and explore the area
Hey there, if you wanna go out this friday or later I am in !
Itaewon danco and hive
Hey! I'm 35F and considering clubbing in Korea. I think there was a list somewhere but I can't remember where. Are there any clubs or lounges that are 30+? I know a lot of places are under 30, but I know there are a select few. Type of music doesn't matter much as long as I can enjoy myself and have a good time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Well the problem with foreigner friendly clubs is that 50-60 % of the people will be foreigner😅 most people want to experience Korean nightlife and not the foreign ones they could just experience in their home country’s ^^ that’s my experience. Clubs Like FF or the Thursday night party in hongdae for example were some of those
I get that. I don't mind clubs with mostly foreigners, I just wanna go to clubs and have fun. 😅
You should be fine then . I’m 33 and didn’t got rejected for a single time in hongdae or itaewon, but I do now that some maybe don’t work , anyway there are clubs and bars every 10 meter , just move to another one the
I've only been turned down once in Hongdae for being too old. Never been denied in Itaewon for age. If you like trance music there's a fairly popular DJ playing tonight in Itaewon at Off the Record.
I think I'll avoid Hongdae clubs 😆
How old were you when you were turned down in Hongdae?
40m. I mostly went out in Itaewon and never had any problems at the door. I did some club hopping with 1-2 backpackers, but I'm more interested in electronic music.
That's good to know. I was only once refused entry to a nightclub in Itaewon. It was "for Koreans only." It turned out to be a GAY nightclub. I found it ironic.
Okay, more than likely, I'll probably stick with Itaewon for the most part. Did you have any particular spots that you liked that you can recommend?
I don't know, what you prefer. The best is: go out and discover. There are many small venues in the 2nd or 3rd floor, which I don't remember the name. Since I prefer electro, I had amazing experiences at Faust, Tunnel, Beton Brut..
Search this subreddit and /r/korea for clubs, people ask this question from time to time.
For example: https://www.reddit.com/r/koreatravel/comments/107xlc1/clubs_and_hangouts_for_the_55_to_65_crowdscenic/
The responses are mostly by people in their late 30s early 40s so close enough.
I should have looked here when I went to Itaewon earlier this month!
This is a work in progress.Basically wanting to detail the current popular spots in Itaewon as most of the "guides" you'll find online are outdated.

Ultimate Ganganm Nightlife Guide
Lets get started.
Itaewon is one of the most popular nightlife districts, and is a popular hangout for expats, tourists, and koreans.

With that said, being a nightlife district, this guide will cover the most popular bars / clubs / lounges. There is a ton more to Itaewon such as delicious food, and way more nightlife spots than what is listed but for the sake of this guide, we will focus on the most popular spots.
Feel free to add more information or venues in the comments and I will add it to the list.
The biggest difference you will find between Gangnam and Itaewon is that Itaewon is alot less restrictive in terms of entrance, (aka no restrictive entrance policies). For obvious reasons though you can't just waltz in wearing full sweats but most places are alot more forgiving then you would find in Gangnam. There are alot of smaller "clubs". Gangnam has the mega clubs, Itaewon clubs scalewise don't really compare. But they have their own merit and can be fun in many different ways.

==Clubs==
The biggest difference between Gangnam Clubs and Itaewon Clubs. In Gangnam Clubs you can expect a higher female to male ratio (more girls) whereas in Itaewon the ratio is usually more males than females.Gangnam clubs basically are all about getting a table with bottles, (spending more = better location) and dancing on a table.Itaewon clubs on the otherhand are more chill. Less focus on tables, easier to get in, and people dance on the dance floor!Basically the consensus is that Gangnam clubs are mostly filled with groups of guys / girls that are looking to find true love for the night, and designed around this.Itaewon clubs are more for groups of friends looking to chill, drink, and dance together, and are much more open in who they let in.

Club Made
One of the longest standing clubs in the Itaewon Club scene. Some days the lines are huge and literally stretch for like 500m. Other days its much shorter.Either way, it is a popular club, and back in the day I remember waiting in line for 2 (yes 2) hours to get in.The club is basically a hybrid between Gangnam and Itaewon clubs. You have the same focus on table service, dancing on tables, throwing napkins, etc but a much larger dance floor than you would find in a standard gangnam club. I would compare it to Octagon, in terms of layout. Dance floor in middle, Tables on the sides surrounding the dance floor.Seperate Hiphop + EDM zones. Its 1 giant basement but they've done a really good job splitting up the two areas , and its cool that you can definately hear the differrence in music once you enter anoter zone.Entrance: again depends on how long the line is lol, but for the most part, foreigners are somewhat welcome. If you're the ideal type, (young, attractive, dressed well) it'll be fine. If you're not ideal, (older, less attractive, etc) you may be asked to buy a table in order to enter. This is the nice way of turning you down. Don't worry similar requirements apply to koreans too but they are a bit more strict on foreigners. Table costs start around 540k for weekends in hiphop , 720k in EDM.Overall it is a fun & popular club, but again it is controversial. Gangnam clubbers aren't a fan because its too much like Itaewon. Itaewon clubbers aren't a fan because its too much like Gangnam. But overall I think it strikes a good balance, and is a great way to get deeper into the club scene in korea and experience the gangnam scene in a more accepting and open environment. Personally? I enjoy coming here once every few months. The crowd is always lit, attractive, and the party goes on all night. (Usually dies out around 7am tho)

Club Assemble
Opened in the old club massive site. Located just up the hill from Club Made. Recently opened and haven't been yet, so unable to really say much. Will update when I have been. Overall though i've seen some good promoters move here and they've done a decent job with building hype in the clubbing cafes so we will see how they do.

Decoy Lounge
Hard to classify as a club, but also hard to classify as a lounge. Reminds me of a budget Jay & Jason X / Viewsic. Plays only Hiphop music. So it is one of the most popular spots in Itaewon right now, and basically how it started was that they used to bring in alot of rapper celebrities to perform when they opened. This caused alot of girls to go there, word got out about the large number of girls there, and then the masses started coming in. Even today though there are still frequent celebrity visits. The venue is nice too as its located on the 2nd floor or a building instead of a basement like most places, and its pretty big. Has probably the best crowd in Itaewon. Great music. Cheap alcohol. Not very foreigner friendly but the same rules as usual apply. Be young + attractive (girls) or get a table (guys).Basically it gets packed and lasts all night. Its cheap too. Tables start at around 350k on weekends. Personal recommendation: I've spent a shitton of money here and basically come at least twice a month. Its chill & good to dance and party, and definately worth checking out.

Pumpkin Lounge
The old B-One lounge. Reopened as Pumpkin Lounge. Name is lounge but its basically a club. Mostly EDM. Slightly grimey vibe, pretty decently sized dancefloor. Haven't had a chance to visit but don't really a reason too either tbh. From SNS doesn't seem very popular. Would appreciate some input here.
Soap
Fun spot. Info Coming soon

==Lounges==
Fountain
Good ol'e Fountain. 3 Stories. First floor is basically a giant dance floor. Second floor is more like a lounge vibe with a pool table, 3rd floor is dead dont' go up there. I like Fountain. Free entry, cheap alcohol, cheap tables, decent crowd. Music is usually top 40 with the music video playing on the jumbotron. Popular with foreigners and koreans. The dance floor gets packed but noone really dances and everyone just stands around drinking coronas. also its hard to move around sometimes. With that said, they keep the lights on pretty bright, and the music isn't overly loud like a club. Not really a spot to go to enjoy music. More a good place to go hang out and enjoy a lite night out, or as a 1st round before heading to a club. Starts dying out pretty early too. Tables start at like 1 bottle, (200kish). If you reserve early through kakao you need to go there before like 10pm and pay otherwise you automatically lose the reservation. Otherwise tables are first come first serve, but they also kick people out of the tables after a few hours if you don't order more alcohol so theres usually always room. Avoid the 3rd floor, its dead and too quiet. Oh and the stamp they give you when you enter is a pain in the ass to wash off.

This is the most relevant post regarding korean night life, good stuff!
Hi I’ve been getting a few DMs asking for the list so I’ve just added the screenshots on here of the list. Have fun. Please don’t message me asking about dress code etc as I do not know and you can look at the clubs IG for ideas or message to ask.
I’m skeptical of this list. The info for busan is quite inaccurate imo- many of these spots are bars only and are not characterized as clubs. Also, Non morde is well known for having a sign about not admitting people based on skin color (iirc it said brown or Indian people were not welcome- I forget exactly).
I’m not able to edit the post. I should have put Nightlife rather than club so apologies. Also, sorry missed about the discriminatory practice of the other venue. That’s freaking shitty
All good! Also, several of the bars/lounges mentioned have had pride celebrations and specials. I know for sure HQ and Luke’s. I think wolfhound as well.
Can you remove Nonmorde from the list? They previously (within the last couple years) had a sign up that said: “ Pakistanis and Indian men don’t follow the rules often, can’t enter our store”
Someone needs to pin this whenever someone asks for foreigner friendly nightlife recommendations!
Agree that the question (where to find foreigner-friendly clubs) is asked frequently and so deserves a helpful list. However, I do not like how the description to this poster implies that these are the only places where one can reliably avoid a supposed "disappointing increase in discrimination in Korea." You do not have to stick to foreign enclaves in HBC or Hongdae to avoid discrimination in Korea.
gwangju not existing on the list sounds about right haha
There’s like 2 bars worth going to in Gwangju and they’re both jazz/ record pubs
Which are they?
😂 I’m sorry, I didn’t compile the locations
Some Korean bars will reclassify what is really racism as "please understand our unique situation. You can't enter our club/bar/restaurant."
The owner will maybe make a comment about the people discriminated against being rowdy, and that they caused problems in the past.
'Unique Situation' seems enough to sound like a slur from 'please understand my unique situation.'....
Hey everyone! I'm 30s Korean-American male looking for some friends to enjoy Seoul's nightlife. I'm planning on going to Itaewon on Friday night and wanted to see if anyone wanted to go together. I like to pre-game at the convenient store or Thursday party and go hopping to Waikiki, Fountain, Glam, Prost, or wherever the group likes to go (I prefer the free entry places just because I like to hop around). Music wise, I basically like everything (hip hop, house, etc).
I hope I can meet some cool people and male/female doesn't matter. I'll be your wingman either way lol. Send me a DM if you're interested!
Ill be at Thursday party too, say hi if you see a guy wearing a white tshirt and blue jeans 😎
Aww, snap, I would, but this weekend, I think it will be Hongdae for me as a bunch of friends keep begging me to go. I really don't like it, though, since everyone is so young.
All in all, I will probably end up back in Itaewon by the morning hours and hit up Thursday party as usual, lol.
Hey I will be there in Thursday party, let’s meet
Send you a dm thru chat
Traveling to Seoul, South Korea in September for about two weeks.
I'd love to be able to keep my fitness routine and be able to hit the gym. If there are any week passes that is reasonable priced that would be great. If not then I'll just do my pushups and pull ups outdoor.
I know in other Asian countries like Thailand or Hong Kong you have pretty good gyms that happen to be cruisy too where fit asian guys meet up in the sauna after a good gym session
Of course this would be just a bonus. My priority would be to find a decent gym.
Whats the cruisy ones in HK?
Just download jackd and go to jongno3ga, Sillim, and Itaewon
In Seoul for a couple of weeks and I figured I’d try out the night life. usually I’m more of a bar person, but I would like dance and unwind after a long week. Where should i go in terms of clubs, somewhere where you can dance and mingle with the people of the city (friendly crowd) . I heard some places have an age limit or dont take foreigners so I wona stear clear of those
You should try out totoga in gangnam
no age restriction
people your age bracket mostly
decent crowd
not too many guys trying to do ONS as compared to hongdae or itaewon
unique experience of old k-pop and new ones.
Over all a good place, would recommend 10/10, been there quite a few times.
Pose in itaewon
I'll second this one, we regularly go to pose and it becomes both staff and customer favourite
Zen bar
Modeci and Channel 1969 in Hongdae are good for people who are there for the music rather than getting trashed with a big group of students, though the latter is kind of a live venue / club hybrid, so I would definitely check to see what's happening on a particular night. Seoul Community Radio in Itaewon is not a club, but dancing definitely happens and it's really easy to meet people there. Also in Itaewon, check the listings for Cakeshop if you want a more traditional club experience. Pistil and Beton Brut are small, but usually have good music. In Euljiro, The Edge is more of a bar-that-gets-clubby as the night wears on, and ACS, a little basement club, the best choice for an unusual, underground vibe, if that's your kind of thing.
All of these places would be good for someone your age. Steer clear of the big mainstream clubs in Hongdae and Gangnam.
Hi All,
Hope everyone is well. My partner and I are doing a lightning visit in Seoul as we have a long layover on our way to the Netherlands. As it's my partner's birthday during the travels she got to pick where I would take her for dinner and drinks and she really wanted to go to Itaewon. This was months before the Halloween drama but I can't help but feel this might not be a good idea anymore. Is it inappropriate to still go there and would the vibe even be any good at the moment? I just want to be respectful and at the same time make sure the misses has an awesome birthday.
Thanks!
The best thing we can do for Itaewon is go there and spend money. But I’d be lying if I told you it wasn’t quiet. Hongdae would be more fun.
It isn’t inappropriate at all however, and there are still some great restaurants there. Other foreigners will be there even if the crowds won’t be around like before.
Everywhere is empty there at thr moment, apart from a few sports bars showing the World Cup. I was there last night... still eerily quiet.
It was empty when I was there last week and impossible to get a taxi
People keep avoiding the neighborhood for this reason and businesses are dying because of it
I think the Craic house or Shenanigans in Itaewon would be pretty good, especially during the world cup. I'd encourage everyone to go there and give them some of your business. They are kind of hurting these days.
Hello! Me and 3 friends of mine are in seoul. We stay in itaewon we want to go out (in a club) and unfortunately we can only go on sunday. So i wanted to ask for recommendations where to go and if there are even Clubs open on sunday. Tank you!
