What Redditors are Saying

Best Free Documentary Streaming Sites

Kanopy

Kanopy is a popular choice among documentary enthusiasts, particularly because it offers free access through local libraries. Users have praised its variety of documentaries and the ability to watch several films per month without any cost [1:2][1:5]. If your library offers Kanopy, it's worth checking out for a diverse selection of high-quality documentaries.

YouTube

YouTube is frequently mentioned as a platform where you can find a wide range of documentaries for free. While it may not have the curated experience of dedicated streaming platforms, it does offer a vast array of content, including educational and historical documentaries [2:6][4:3].

Pluto TV

Pluto TV is another free option that has been recommended for its solid documentary section. It provides a variety of channels, including those dedicated to documentaries, allowing viewers to explore different topics without a subscription fee [3:1].

PBS Documentaries

PBS offers free access to a selection of documentaries on their website. Known for their quality programming, PBS documentaries cover a wide range of topics and are often educational and thought-provoking [4:1].

IHaveNoTV

IHaveNoTV is a lesser-known site but has been recommended by users for its collection of documentaries. It offers a unique selection that might include some hidden gems not found on more mainstream platforms [1:4].

Reddit's r/Documentaries

While not a streaming site itself, Reddit's r/Documentaries subreddit is a valuable resource for discovering new documentaries. The community regularly posts links to documentaries that are free to watch online, making it a great place to find recommendations and direct viewing links [2:1][2:5].

These platforms provide a variety of options for accessing documentaries without needing to pay for subscriptions or rentals. Whether you're looking for educational content, historical narratives, or niche topics, these sites offer plenty of choices for documentary lovers.

kanopy via the library is my favourite streaming service. My library gets me 6 films a month. Check out fathers of sons if you get a chance

Hi,

Thanks for contributing to r/Documentaries. Unfortunately, your post was removed because it either does not qualify as a documentary or links to a paid streaming service, which can only be posted on Mondays.

You can sub to /r/Documentaries as they post multiple times a day with links to new and interesting docs, often time direct from the source, and always free to watch.

I’m on a doc kick. Just finished the Max doc on Angel City FC. Was great. Looking for some other ones - doesn’t have to be sports related.

I love documentaries. PBS is always a guaranteed choice. Netflix has some great docuseries too, Cheer, Chimp Empire, Drive to Survive, Wild Wild Country, Keep Sweet to name a few.

What a story of deception!! WOW!

Here's a different true story of deception:

I knew a family where the mother was diagnosed with Munchausen Syndrome. She compromised her little girl's health for attention and fame. It was so hard for me to believe that she was capable of that because she was such a loving and kind person and her husband stood behind her.

Another one:

A nurse at a hospital in West Virginia was convicted of killing patients. Why? The nurse wanted the fame of being the hero to swoop in and save the patient. It didn't always work.

Anyone know a site for Hard To Find movies?? I've been looking for a movie called, The Unseen (2005) for years! It features actors Gale Harold & Steve Harris and it's a Great movie! With such an Important Topic in it's twist at the end, this movie most definitely should be shown Often, however, they've very Obviously completely removed it out of circulation SMDH.. It truly goes to show us ALL exactly what "kind of people" Actually control what we SEE.. and Don't. iykyk

Same here! Looking for obscure and large foreign language selection!! I watch lots of French, German, Swedish movies and would love to find a site that includes all the new stuff from those countries

Movie Universe does have a good selection of more obscure films but its hit or miss if its going to work or not 😭 The pop ups are minimal tho and really easy to block So its good for everything else just doesn't always have what I'm looking for. Specifically I'm looking for the swedish show ONDSKAN/Evil and cant find anywhere to watch it (im in US)

  1. Content Variety: Look for sites that offer a wide range of documentaries across different genres, such as nature, history, science, and social issues.

  2. Quality of Streaming: Ensure the site provides high-quality video streaming (HD if possible) for a better viewing experience.

  3. User Interface: A user-friendly interface makes it easier to navigate and find documentaries of interest.

  4. Availability: Check if the site is accessible in your region, as some content may be geo-restricted.

  5. Ad Experience: Be prepared for ads on free platforms; some sites may have more intrusive advertising than others.

Recommended Free Documentary Streaming Sites:

  1. YouTube: A vast collection of documentaries from various creators and channels. Look for reputable channels like PBS, National Geographic, and Vice.

  2. Tubi: Offers a wide selection of documentaries across various categories, all free with ads.

  3. PBS Video: Features a range of high-quality documentaries, especially focused on American history and culture.

  4. Documentary Heaven: A curated collection of documentaries available for free streaming, covering diverse topics.

  5. Vimeo: Hosts many independent documentaries and short films, often with unique perspectives.

  6. Kanopy: If you have a library card or university login, you can access a large selection of documentaries for free.
