TL;DR: For maximizing distance off the tee, consider using golf balls like the TaylorMade TP5x, Callaway Supersoft, or Bridgestone e6. These options are known for their low spin rates and high launch capabilities, making them suitable for players with swing speeds around 110 mph.
Best Golf Balls for Long Driving
TaylorMade TP5x: This ball is frequently recommended for its low spin characteristics, which help achieve greater distance. It’s designed to perform well for players with higher swing speeds, making it a solid choice for those looking to maximize their driving distance 1:1
9:1.
Callaway Supersoft: Known for its soft feel and affordability, the Supersoft is another great option for long drives. Many users appreciate its performance off the tee while also providing decent control around the greens. It's priced around $22.99 per dozen, making it budget-friendly 2:1
3:1.
Bridgestone e6: This ball is praised for its low spin and distance capabilities, particularly for players who may struggle with accuracy. The e6 is often highlighted as a good value option that still delivers on performance, especially for those with faster swing speeds 2:3
9:10.
Volvik Vivid: While primarily known for its bright colors, the Volvik Vivid is also recognized for its distance performance. It offers a unique combination of visibility and distance, making it a fun choice for casual rounds and long drive contests 3:5.
Titleist Velocity: This ball is specifically designed for distance, featuring a low compression core that helps increase ball speed. It's a popular choice among golfers looking for a reliable distance ball without breaking the bank 9:1.
Considerations for Choosing a Golf Ball
Swing Speed: Players with a swing speed around 110 mph will benefit from low spin balls that can maximize distance. Higher compression balls like the TP5x are ideal for such swing speeds, while softer balls like the Supersoft may provide more comfort but less distance 3 (1:15).
Budget: If you're looking for cost-effective options, brands like Maxfli and Kirkland offer good performance at lower prices. The Maxfli Tour series, for example, has been noted for delivering premium performance without the premium price tag 6:2.
Feel and Control: While distance is important, consider how the ball feels during play, especially on approach shots and putting. A balance between distance and feel can enhance overall performance on the course 7:2.
In conclusion, selecting the right golf ball can significantly impact your performance, especially in long drive contests. Experimenting with different brands and models will help you find the best fit for your game.
Haven’t played golf in a few years. What ball should I buy to win the longest ball contest(don’t know any of the new equipment that’s out there). My swingspeed is around 110 with good fundamentals just haven’t play golf since I picked up shooting guns competitively. Launch angle should just about 13* with 2300 rpm off a 8.5 razer hawk driver and accura shaft.
Havent played golf in a few years and you have a swing speed that nearly compares to PGA pro? Right.
Use a range ball with a deep cut it in.
I used to play college golf
Sorry you're not getting any decent replies... everyone on r/golf thinks they are one good round from turning pro. For a 110 swing speed you would fit well into just about any premium low spin ball from Titleist, Srixon, Taylormade, etc.
Volvik’s are probably the longest
Thanks I’ll look into those.
Didn’t win anything today. They didn’t even set up the long drive hole until after we played it.
At your speed probably a TP5X.
Use a Taylormade TP5x. It's a real low spin ball that goes pretty far.
So I switched jobs last year and at my old employer I would always get free boxes of Pro V1's because we would give them out to clients all the time with our company logo and we had tons of extras.
Now i'm finally out of the free balls and I need to start paying for my own. I would rather not pay $45-50 per box.
What less expensive ball would you recommend for a bogey golfer who hits long but can sometimes struggle with accuracy?
The ball is an important piece of equipment and I wouldn't recommend picking one on it's ability to make you slightly straighter off the tee. The way that's going to happen is with a lower spin distance ball but that's going to create several issues namely:
At this point most balls spin relatively the same off the driver because they're all designed to be pretty low spin with modern ball technology.
Finding a ball that drops your driver spin by at most 200 RPM might reduce your sidespin slightly, but it's not going to work miracles. At most you're talking like 2-3 yards less offline on equal strikes which is basically immeasurable. Also, you may have reduced your offline spin axis but if the ball also goes farther with the reduced spin your total offline could be equal to even farther offline with the added distance
Dispersion and distance offline is always going to be driven by strike and face and path. Changing a ball might make some very small differences, but it's not going to make up for inconsistent face angles, paths, or strikes.
Maybe most importantly, trying to seek out that low driver spin (and often much lower compression) ball is going to cause you to sacrifice in other areas, namely spin with your short irons and wedges and especially around the green with partial shots. The most common advice for picking a ball is choose it from the green outward. Find something that feels good putting (which can be a big part of confidence) and that you can control to your liking on short game shots and wedges. The Driver should really be the last thing influencing your ball choice because, again referring to the first point, most balls perform pretty similarly off the driver when you control for strike and other inputs.
If you are very used to playing with ProV1s I wouldn't necessarily recommend running out and buying a cheaper distance ball because that will likely be a VERY different feel and response to what you're used to. There are so many good balls out there that perform similarly to the ProV1 at nearly half the price. The Snell MTB Black is probably the favorite around here followed closely by the Vice Pro (both ~$32/dozen or $27 if you buy in bulk) but there's also balls like the Cut Blue or Grey which are very good and similar and only cost $20 per dozen. There's lots of direct-to-consumer brands like those or if you want to stick with ProV1s and save money there are lots of people here who recommend LostGolfBalls.com for used balls (stick to 4A or 5A Mint and not refurbished) that are basically new (some are even new logo overruns) for significantly cheaper.
Bridgestone e6 soft are great. Hit them straight about 10 yards than any Callaway I have tried. Very nice around the green too. I have a tendency to launch my 8i down very high with a ton of spin so pro v1 s never felt worth it for a 17 handicapper. They are about $20 a dozen.
Look for a distance ball with low spin. I like Titleist velocity
Oh my fucking god that was great!
Been a HUGE fan of the Callaway Supersofts ... and i'll be the first to say that i'm more of a harder ball fan myself for 80% of shot scenarios.
And $22.99 for a doz is hard to beat for the quality.
It'll take some time to get used to the soft feel around the greens but the benefits off the tee make the adjustment worth it.
First off I know distance isn't everything but what hooked me on golf is that perfect swing where the ball goes wayyy farther than I thought I could ever hit it. I have a pretty slow swing from what others have told me so anything that would work well with that is appreciated. Bonus points if they are a little more fun than just plain white :)
Bridgestone Lady or Laddie. First to make a ball for women's swing speeds and still one of the best, IMO.
I was talking to the Titleist sales rep for my region the other day about this topic. He suggested even for me with a slow swing speed that the Pro V1 line is better than the Tour Soft. Softer balls will breakdown faster than a hard ball because they’re made with cheaper urethane. The Tour Soft or Chrome Soft will only last 9-12 holes before it’s scratched or misshaped v a Pro V1 or a Chrome Tour that would hold up for 3 rounds. I play -Pro V1. They feel best to me around the greens. I think you’re better to buy a few sleeves of a few styles and see what feels best to you.
I'll give ProV1's a try but the price point is a little scary right now, I don't lose too many but still
I use Pro-V1s and have bought them for several years from Clean Green Golf (CGG). cleangreengolfballs.com They sell found balls from multiple manufacturers and in conditions ranging from Mint to Good. You can get a dozen Mint Pro-V1s and Pro-V1xs from about $22-$26. I cannot tell the difference between those and a brand new Pro-V1. I play with our club league (90 women) and run a weekly game, also of 16-20 women and many of us use balls bought from CGG. If you want to try Pro-V1s you can get a dozen from CGG for about the cost of a sleeve of new ones. A dozen will give you more time to experience hitting them which will help determine whether or not they can help you improve your distance. As for improving distance, one of the best ways I have improved distance is by doing Pilates twice a week. I hope this information helps answer your posting. BTW…CGG supply of Mint balls will be best during the spring-summer-fall seasons.
Lowkey Maxflis are a great alternative
Reading this 💡
It is strange but I had a similar experience recently. I have golfed for 15+ years; the practice facility that I use has bins with Pro V1. I never booked those bins because I thought my swing speed was never high enough (65-70 mph). I finally reserved a pro-v1 bin this week and I was amazed. The balls are almost “sticky soft” compared to what I am used to playing (Volvik).
Yesterday, I used Pro-V1 in my 9-hole round. I hadn’t adjusted the club selection and many times, I went too far. However, it was fantastic around the greens. I always thought it was hype and due to the expense, I never considered Pro-V1 before.
I’m buying a sleeve and testing them out.
Volvik Vivid. I gained an extra club length when I used them, but they have next to no spin around the greens though. Volvik are also the brand that they use for long drive and so many colours!
I find anything of the “soft” variety I hit significantly further.
Thank you! I have used a few Callaway super softs before and liked them and was wondering if other soft brands would give the same effect
I use supersofts for regular play and Chrome softs for league play. The Chromes do go further. Supersofts have good colors, the Chrome softs do come in yellow.
I also tried the Taylor Made speed softs, which have the paint splatter pattern, and I liked those too. Not as much as Callaway though.
I tried a prov1 ball I found once and it felt like hitting a rock.
I love the supersofts, too, from both brands. Good call out here!
You intrigued me with the paint splatter, maybe I'm a sucker for aesthetics
I'm getting back into golf after a 15 year break. I'm waiting to receive my custom fitted Mizuno JPX 925 Forged 5-PW. Looking for some insight on some good ball options. I was around a 21 or 22 handicap when I last played. I'm older now, driver swing speed at or just over 100. I like a softer feeling ball, don't want excessive spin off of Driver but would value approach shot and green side spin. What are your thoughts?
Maxflis Tour/Tour X are great but if you're gonna lose a few it's going to get expensive. The new Kirklands (not last years) has greatly improved long game spin.
I can't justify paying $40-55 for a dozen balls, so I play either Maxfli Tour or Tour X from Dicks Sporting goods. The four dozen deal is where I save the most money. I like them better than Vice or Kirkland.
I have a quicker swing speed and i’ve been liking the maxfli tour series of golf balls. I currently hit their tour x model, but the whole line of golf balls are worth looking into!
I bought some of these on sale for 1/2 off and I absolutely love them.
I’m looking for something for distance mainly?
Someone tell me if this is a bad idea, but I once hit a maxfli staightfli and it straight up goes in the direction of your club face and doesn’t curve. Might be a good option if you don’t care about spin or working the ball
I use them. Trust me I can still slice them like no other. But I do believe it cuts down on some of the side spin.
Noodles long and soft.
Forgiving, cheap, will last long enough until you lose them. Next step up for performance while being cheap is Kirkland.
These + whatever you find in the trees when you go looking for one you shanked
Bought a box when I was newer, they’re all gone now but I literally haven’t bought new balls since then
It should float, have a GPS and glow in the dark.
And beep in tall rough or leaves
Honestly -- a ball that gave off enough noise to draw the eye when struck and airborn would help a lot of people.
That would be nice as well.
either facebook marketplace for a ton of cheap balls or lostgolfballs.com
If you want new, low spin balls ... maybe something like the Bridgestone e6. I don't think going this route to pursue low spin balls to hit the ball further is a good idea, though, just not worth it in practice.
Mine is the srixon distance , good quality budget I get ok results with. Wondering what others use ? I’m not very good but I’m getting better still I’m a way off being a premium ball guy
Maxfli. I really like the straightfli. $55 for 4 dozen. They also have softfli if you like softer, or the tour ball if you like to think you’re hitting a pro v. Guys from mygolfspy rated it the most underrated golf ball on one of their podcasts. I’d say you get 99% of the performance of the premium ball, at a fraction of the price. I have no numbers to back up the claim, just my experience.
As someone who was die hard ProV1, when the price increased (again) I started looking for a cheaper option. Maxfli Tour X feels and reacts no different than a ProV1x.
Co-sign. Titleist AVX was my go to but the Maxfli Tour S has supplanted it. Very similar results for significantly cheaper. The Maxfli feels better off the putter to me which is an added bonus.
Maxfli tour X is a great ball at a great price
Any of the Tour balls. I love the S.
Op, the best ball for a golfer that loses a lot of balls is a ball retriever. Scour the areas you lose a lot of balls. Most people probably lose balls there. Now winter is almost over here, but I picked up enough balls to get me well into the season. Now that the season is picking up. Use the time you're waiting on the group in front. I have a bag specifically for balls I found so I can bring them home and clean them. I typically save the better brands and use the others. I haven't spent a dime on balls since last June.
Maxfli balls in general are always at a great price so I’m always buying them usually only time I don’t is if srixon is having a sale cause I love their golf balls.
It’s fucking hilarious when my maxfli is 40 yards longer than my playing partners’ pro v’s, and 10 ft closer to the pin. It’s the player not the ball!
For me, that's the titleist tour speed.... discontinued at the start of 2024 season, of course.
Just FYI, Dick's and GG almost always have this deal, so there is practically never any reason to pay the full price for these excellent balls
I play supersofts often because I find so many and they’re the biggest seller in my pro shop. Working at a course I’ve literally stockpiled over 1k balls and have them all separated by brand/model. I’ve literally only bought balls twice in the last three years (1 Box of Mizuno Pro X and 1 sleeve of ProV1X left - dash
I am looking to start my second full season using a single brand of golf ball. I played about a number of different brands last year and couldn't find one that had consistent distance and control in the air. I know there are a lot of brands that say they have the best distance or allow for the most control but I want to find which one is actually consistent with their claim. Any recommendations?
Consistent distance and control in a ball comes from a consistent golf swing, and consistent impact..
Any premium urethane cover ball will be very consistent.
That is very true. What would you consider for a premium urethane covered ball? Is it pretty much any brand?
Yes, pretty much any brand. I played Maxfli Tour the last 2 years, and switched to Vice Pro this year to save a few bucks, as Maxfli raised their prices. There are a lot of balls that are 95% as good as Pro V1's for half the price. Even Kirkland from Costco are good balls.
Not who you asked, but the most common premium ones are:
Prov1/prov1x
Chrome soft/chromesoft x/chromesoft x ls
Tp5/tp5x
Z-star/z-star xv
I forget which of the Bridgestones are the best
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. There's other brands like vice and snell, and Wilson has a urethane ball but i didn't include them because I'm not super familiar with them. The ones above are the biggest/best known.
There is no objectively "best" ball. Every one of them has trade offs and will perform different for different swings but to be honest, the majority of golfers aren't good enough to see a huge difference between them.
I played the Mizuno RB 566V golf ball last year and it performed really well. It's $30 and the performance is not too far off from the $50 premium's.
Pretty much any urethane cover multi-piece ball will do.
I use either TP5X or Z-star XV
Thanks for the recommendation. I will have to check those out.
Maxfli Tour, buy in bulk at Dicks or Golf Galaxy.
You can go for a ball fitting. The people working there are the best people to ask about that, not a much of hackers on Reddit that mostly play balls they found while looking for their ball in the trees, which coincidentally was also acquired on a previous visit to the trees looking for a ball they had lost.
I am starting to play golf more regularly now and have improved my consistency to the point where I am not really losing balls as much anymore. I almost always just use random balls I find on the course or old balls that re worn or scuffed. I want to start buying balls so I am playing with something more consistent. I was wondering if I could get any advice or recommendations for which ball to get. Some considerations:
Thanks!
I like the vice pro line of golf balls. Based on your swing speed it sounds like the pro plus might be a good choice for you. The quality of them is close to pro Vs, but you can order them in bulk for like half the price.
Callaway’s are nice, esp super soft.
Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY RECYCLED BALLS!
Do not play a supersoft if you have 170-180 mph ball speed, jesus
I was talking about what I liked by simply suggesting Callaway, obviously that was a confusing way to put it.
OP, Bridgestone is a great brand and actually have “suggested for players with ____ swing speed” right on the box, if you know your swing speed too. Or, if you like Callaway like I do, you could use Chrome Soft’s.
If you don't know, then it doesn't really matter.
My recommendation would be Maxfli Tour X. Best ball for the money by far, when you buy 4 dozen.
If you are playing balls you find on the course, you should have an idea of what you like best.
For the most part the decision for me comes to how the ball feels when putting, how it reacts on approach shots, and how it feels off the tee.
I prefer 3 piece balls because I have more control around the green and I like the feel of them.
Don’t get refurbished balls.
I have recently found that ball fit is the difference between being in the woods or the fairway. Not sure swing speed for me personally has anything to do with it but more ball spin. If I’m really trying to play a good game I go for the avx it’s low spine and feels good putting.
I had played some maxi fli that had low spin did well with it but it felt like I was putting stones.
Anyway there were a lot of cheap balls I thought I liked but can’t even bother with them anymore.
Playing the right ball dropped my score from 90s to mid 80s because I can predict where it will land even with a bad swing or miss hit
My team relies on me to hit a long drive. Its two old men and two young men. The old guys are absolutely money from 150 and in.
I almost never contribute from 150 and in..
I usually play a Kirkland Signature. It seems plenty long for me, however if I wanted to maybe gain a few yards off the tee in this scramble would there be a better ball for me to switch too? I cant seem to find data out there to back this up.
Ive heard good things about the Titleist Velocity, but not sure if its all marketing hype.
Any thoughts?
Distance plus. Had a Taylor made rep come into the store one time and he said he almost exclusively used distance plus over tp5. Also last time I checked they’re 2/$35 and always on sale.
Hands down prov1x left dash. Will give you the most distance off the tee but you’ll lose distance on irons cause spin rate will be lower
Edit: alright you’ll lose distance if you don’t swing your 7i at 100mph clubhead speed… which is the vast majority of people. If you have a high swing speed you’ll gain distance. Sheesh.
To all the golf ball physicists commenting below: so then is 0 spin the ideal spin rate for every club if your only goal was distance?
second the tee shots. but i don't see how you'd lose distance with the left dash because of spin unless you're not optimizing it with that ball. It's one of the hardest balls on the market and it's smaller than the kirkland so it might not be optimal for your iron play.
I never knew Balls have different sizes? Wonder if that’s better for putting?
I play left dashes and love the distance of the tee. When I nuke them, I can push 340 total off the tee. That said, if you weren’t chasing distance, do you think the lower spin rate is a disadvantage on irons? I would trade driver distance for iron performance all day.
Chrome Tour TD, is far superior than the Prov1x left dash. Carries just as far off the tee and you get a little more spin out of your wedges and around the greens plus it doesn’t feel like a rock
Vice Tour is a great ball that's budget distance low spin if you're in a scramble and don't want to dump VPPs into OB. I used them for years and stats wise I didn't loose as much with the Tour as I did with the normal Pro.
Also agree Vice Tour is long off the tee. I actually think they are very good for all aspects.
I don’t even have a high swing speed, when those reds ones go back on sale on Amazon I’m gonna pick up more. I usually drive 200-220, I was striping some of the vice pro plus 250-275. Most were still around the 220 mark, but my better swings were noticeably longer.
Quick edit: another commenter pointed out they are currently on sale with the prime days. Boutta cop the red ones (they look more orange but that’s fine)
TP5x plays really similarly for me. I prefer the feel of the TP vs the left dash and get more green side spin with it.
With driver the numbers were within 4 yards of each other with 114-118 mph swing speed.
Kirkland balls are very spinny. Look for low spin balls. For low spin budget friendly..
• Callaway Supersoft
• TaylorMade Distance+
• Vice Drive
• Wilson Duo Soft
• Titleist TruFeel
• Wilson Triad
have they significantly changed the callaway supersofts? because they sapped so much ball speed off the driver from me when I was using them back around 2020. told my brother to switch from them a few years ago and he immediately hit it further and more consistent too.
Bridgestone RX might be one to try.
I like the RX-S, which has a little more spin. But RX is nice soft feeling ball with good iron/wedge spin
Try the Maxfli Tour and Tour S. The S is going to be the softest of the lineup but I felt like the standard Tour had a fairly soft feel for its compression rating. The Maxfli Tour series balls are extremely hard to beat price wise, I’ve been playing them for about a year and a half now
If not the Pro V1 I think the Taylormade Tour Response does well with low spin off the tee and decent greenside spin.
If you like soft I am loving the Vice Golf Air. If you are looking locally for something the Maxfli Tour S would be a good start from Dicks or Golf Galaxy.
Good choice! I just got my 925 forged in a few days ago. I like pro-v1. I've tried a bunch of different brands and gamed titleist AVX on and off but I always go back to ProV. I like the AVX because it's softer but the trajectory and spin are lower on my approach shots making it harder to hold greens.
I say just buy some sleeves of different balls and find one you like.
I’ve been using the Bridgestone tour b x for the last two years and I absolutely love them. I do wish they had an option for an alignment line but I buy the b2g1 box deal on Amazon at the start of every season and usually that carries me through most of the season.
Idk why but I also just love the double dimple look. I used to rock the chrome soft xls triple track and I loved the way that ball looked as well with the hexagonal dimples.
I’m about a 9 handicap, and probably not good enough to notice a substantial difference between any premium balls other than on the putting green but interested to see what you guys like using.
Maxfli Tour and Tour S. Great balls for the price!
I’m a big fan on the Tour X. Bought them on sale last year, and I have no complaints. Surprisingly, I haven’t lost all 48 balls yet.
Been playing Tour w/Max Align... great ball! Durability wise it has been as good as the other top brands
Surprisingly good balls. Played a couple I found. Really good ball.
TM Tour Response. For alignment on the tee and green. Great all around feel and performance, plus I grabbed 17 dozen on the offseason for $22 a pop
Same here. And I get about 5 to 20 yards (wedge to driver) more than my kitklands with less dispersion.
Cam Smith is probably the best putter on the planet, or at least has been over the last 5 years or so.
He uses a line 90⁰ to the hole lol. Good enough for me
Me too best value for performance ball around. On mygofspy test (the one for weight size conformity etc.) only pro v1 is better quality.
This is definitely personal preference, but my putting improved exponentially when I stopped using alignment.
I play Bridgestone Tour BXS, and I just have the B face up.
I kinda get in my own head if I line up a putt and then the line looks different when I'm standing over it to what I lined up.
it's arguably as important as a club fitting. A ball change can radically improve your ball flight without a single change to your swing
Durability seems to be on par with most other brands. I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary. I am old dude with a slow swing speed and I like the S so far
Pro V1X Left Dash. I did a ball fitting and it was far and away the best ball for me.
So I’m a mid to high handicapper (shoot in the low 90s, occasional high 80s if I’m lucky) and have a higher swing speed. I have no idea where to start when looking to stick with one ball. Anyone have any suggestions?
Bridgestone E6. Half the cost of any premium ball, performs VERY well with excellent greenside and putting feel.
I love Bridgestone balls but the e6 is the only one I don't like. The e12 contact is the best for me at a decent budget.
I set up a subscription on Amazon, now I have a lot because I keep forgetting to cancel it!
E12 is by far my favorite ball. It’s the only ball I’ve played that feels soft but also stays pretty straight. The more expensive balls and Kirklands are too spin prone and make my slice even worse.
High handicap here. I play mostly with Callaway super soft, occasionally vice or Kirkland, and when I'm feeling good ProV1. Whatever I'm finding in the woods that day.
I would suggest that you find a ball and stick to it. Changing balls every round or even every hole is probably hurting you. Even if it’s just super softs. Having a consistent ball is something I think a lot of new and high handicappers underestimate. So much in golf is outside your control, why change the one variable that is within your control
Sure, ProVs are the “nicer” ball. But even if you don’t feel it, they are flying and rolling slightly different than your normal ball.
First time I played with ProV1's was a month ago on my first golf trip. Figured I'd treat myself and get some nice balls for the trip.
I hit them farther and better than any other ball I've played. It was a huge mistake...because now I'm plagued with "needing" to play a premium ball for the rest of my days. My wallet is already crying.
That's a good point. A cheaper ball can roll out more twice as far as a ProV (obviously depending on the shot). Hard to stay consistent around the green if you don't know if you'll roll out 10 feet or 30 feet.
If you're breaking 90, then the best thing that you can do for your game is to find a ball that's within your budget and stick with it. Knowing how a ball will behave around the green and off the putter face will help you lower your scores.
As for specific recommendations - that's kind of on you to decide. I'd buy a couple of sleeves of a few models and try them out. The general recommendation is that high swing speeds need firm balls, but that doesn't always work out. My driver swing speed is around 105mph, and my favorite ball has a 67-70 compression rating (Srixon Q-Star Tour). Yes, firm balls like Pro V1x go farther off the tee, but I hit more fairways with the QST.
The best thing I would recommend at your stage of the game is to play a urethane cover ball if you can afford to. That will allow a lot more spin on approach shots, no matter what the compression rating.
Edit - someone recommended Vice balls here - that's good place to start, especially with sales they have. They make a Vice Pro model (similar to a Pro-V1 / Z-Star), and a Pro Soft model, which is closer to the QST that I play. Two good options to try out.
Serious question. Can you really lower your scores by finding a golfball and stick to it? I am a 20 hcp and play most of the times between 85 and 95. I only play with lake balls and don’t really have a favorite. I am just looking for no serious marks and scratches.
From 20 to 10 handicap it is about getting the ball in play in my opinion, but from 10 to 5 you really have to start getting up and down and holding greens and that’s really hard to do with 2 piece ball or a low quality 3 piece. I think at 5 you gotta be investing in top of the line balls - it’s too damn important part of your game at that point.
Probably not. You gotta have your swing mechanics repeatable and reliable to a degree for a ball to do anything consistently. I dip below 90s occasionally, but I am still learning and my swings keeps on changing ever so slightly. I just hit whatever that's not absolute trash (not the super soft balls though, I just don't like the feel from them). Once my swing stabilizes, only then I probably will stick with a ball and play that. Currently I got a load of used Titleist velocity. They seem to be pretty good for me
You can buy them on Costco.com without a membership, but there's a surcharge for non-members, and the cost of shipping is included in the price (~$6-8 per 24 balls compared to in-store price).
Hey all. Obviously everyone who loves golf can be a titleist whore, so lets ignore the pro v1 and pro v1x option here.
What is truly your favorite ball that isnt best in class.
Ill go first. When i played often in the 2010s my go to was Slazenger Raw Distance. They werent durable, werent very soft around the greens, but my lord did they fly. I swear they gave me 15-25 extra yards over any other ball (pro v series included) and ive never found a ball since they stopped making them that has the same effect. They were also $30 for 30 balls from dicks.
Now, with what is available on the market today, i find myself really enjoying the vice drive balls and if im splurging i buy the bridgestone 12s.
Both have good distance and decent feel around the greens and seem to have dimples that reduce sidespins.
Srixon Z star XV or Z star diamond are super underrated imo. They’re super receptive around greens, fly far and feels great. The biggest down side is they’re not the most durable… nippy wedge shots rip up the cover. Not to the extent that it affects performance but can definitely be an eye sore after playing the same ball for more than a round.
I’ve been playing the XVs for a couple of months now. Absolutely love them. I get way more spin on wedge shots compared to other balls I’ve played with great distances.
I had been diehard z-star crew for a long time, but I’ve switched to captain Kirks. The new ones are legit excellent balls and for the price per ball it’s impossible to beat. I still lose 2-3 balls a round and I just can’t stomach paying more than I do for the kirklands.
Same ball for more than a round? Youre clearly in the wrong sub.
Jk jk. Thanks for comment. What do thise run you a dozen?
Have you tried the 2025 models? Seems like durability has improved. I love the new diamond. Touch softer and incredibly receptive around the greens.
Maxfli tour x when on sale at Dicks. Can get 48 for $90
Can’t tell much difference between this ball and the prov series
Singing the gospel of the Tour X! My distances haven’t changed a bit since switching from the Pro V1
I’ve used all three and they’re amazing in general, especially when looking at the cost.
Landed on the standard Maxfli Tour ball.
Is it me or does the regular tour play like an AVX not a proV? I am much longer off the irons with it but it has way too much spin off the driver. I love the feel of it though. I need to try the tour x and see if that is more pro v like.
Go buy 10 boxes of each and cut em all open and tell me Vice spends the same amount of money on quality control as Titleist. They are also no where near as durable. To say they are the same is just blatant misinformation. Vice balls would be all over professional tours if they were as good as ProV1s.
Love these. Course I played today had a great sale on them - 2 dozen for $48.
Completely agree! I’ve been playing them for years and frequently break 80.
Me: 20 handicap usually due to 3-4 "blow-up holes". Driver usually carries 240Y with another 20Y of roll out. Drives are low spin; certainly don't balloon upwards. Misses are generally fades (not full blown slices) hit off the toe. Approach shots struck well will stick on green with 6i (175 yds) or less, but even with wedges I won't get the ball to pull back.
What I want: A ball that is forgiving off the tee, feels soft on pitch shots and with the putter, and comes in white. Cost is a consideration, but only a minor one...I'd much rather pay an extra $5-10/round in lost balls if I'm getting better scorecard results.
Wilson Duo soft
IMO this is the best high handicap ball out there today, especially since adding the alignment stripe.
Maxfli Tour S or 2025 Wilson Triad. I am pretty much right where you are at and these are my current two favorite models. The Legato off Amazon is a good option as well if you are somewhere where you need to have them shipped in.
Been playing the Maxfli Tour x and enjoying them. Wondering how the S plays?
I’ve played the Tour and the Tour S, don’t have the speed for the X. I really enjoy the feel on drives and approach shots but you will probably lose a bit of greenside spin compared to the X.
These are the best two balls right now for the money IMO…similar play..similar compression rating…similar price.
Have you tried the seed balls? Like the legato but the logo kills me
I have not but I’ve heard good things on some models. The logo doesn’t bother me since I can’t see it anymore when it’s lost in the trees.
TaylorMade tour response . Great midrange ball.. if you like the stripe too it’s a great addition
This is a really good mid-range ball.
I played a couple of these I found. Very happy with them. I am pretty loyal to Srixon as they are good to HS Teams, but the MaxFli Tour would be a good replacement.
The best ball on the market imo.
So I have been experimenting with different balls so far this year after making some swing changes. Little about me, 8.7 handicap, driver swing speed turned down to 103-105, 7i swing speed 88-90ish. I have a pretty high angle of attack with my driver causing a bit of lower spin with my draw, also I deloft my irons a bit too much and take off a lot of spin. I have been trying the Vice pro plus, but find if I hit it a bit on the toe it dies at the end of the flight and dives hard left. Short game spin with them is great though. I also use the Chrome Tour but feel it does a bit of the same. I have a $40 reward from Dicks expiring soon and was gonna get a case of balls, but wanted to see what some of you fine people recommend. Thanks!
Bridgestone tour b xs or z star diamond
As someone with 113-115mph driver swing speed and only gets about 1600-1700 backspin on a driver set to 12° , the tour b xs and z stars have been amazing. Used to love the project A TaylorMade too
>I have a $40 reward from Dicks expiring soon and was gonna get a case of balls
Maxfli Tour X
Used the maxfli tour x a little last year, iron spin was low for me, was getting better spin from the chrome tour. Even tested them on course back to back. Though it did go a mile off the driver lol.
Brooks ball. Z Star Diamond.
Hmm, haven’t looked at the z star diamond
Anything soft.
Bridgestone Tour B XS is the highest spinning Tour ball out there.
I ’ve been golfing for most of my life(I’m 32 and I started playing when I was a kid) and I’m a pretty decent player. My handicap is currently a 10.6 but I float right around the low tens and high single digits.
I have literally no idea what golf balls I like to play. Sometimes I play a tour ball because they’re supposed to be nice. Sometimes I play a Pinnacle Rush because I found one and fuck it. I can’t tell the difference in any meaningful way.
I’d say that I like ProV1s more than ProV1x but honestly if someone told me I didn’t I think I’d probably believe them.
So how in the world do people decide what ball they’re going to game?
Price, color, feel, and compression. My main ball is a yellow top flite hammer control. Great price point, great cover feel for being an surlyn ball, and compression in the 70s. Srixon soft feel and Callaway Supersoft in the cooler weather. Srixon q-stat tour when I want to play a urethane ball.
This is super interesting but exactly what I’m looking for. I think most people that are in the low/mid handicap range instinctively gravitate toward the premium tour balls but I don’t actually know that it’s the best thing.
Honestly I don’t know if the guys I know would even pick up a Top Flite let alone game them. What led you to give that ball a chance?
When I came back I did a lot of research and the D2+feel had great reviews for the price point. The hammer control is basically the new version. Top flites get a bad name, and the XL distance is still a horrible ball, but from all my research and testing that ball is great. For the courses I play it gives me more than enough spin around the green. Just have to know the ball will roll out more than a urethane ball. I also prefer a lower compression ball even though my ball speed and distance means I can play a harder ball. I'm losing distance, but I enjoy the feel from a lower compression and I'm not a pro so who cares? If you can't enjoy golf then why are we playing right?? I wouldn't say all my choices ate ideal, but I got down to a 5.9 last year playing the TF HC almost exclusively.
Top Flite Hammer Control feels just like a ProV1X off the tee and also flies straight. It’s a great cheap ball if you want something a little firmer than a supersoft.
The Q-Star Tours are seriously underrated for mid handicap golfers.
Honestly go get a ball fitting at your level it can make a difference.
Here is a link from titleist. It's not just their brand balls either.
I know this is the right answer but I don’t think there’s anywhere local that does them.
If a course has a real sim, and a proshop, they usually offer a ball fitting
if you have a golf galaxy nearby they do it for like $40 or something
ive been going off how many i lose a round. I primarily play kirkland just because of volume and my level of play. but occasionally ill break out the good balls when its been a good day.
Kirkland is a fine ball for the vast majority of casual golfers
Hey there! So over the past few months I’ve had lessons/fittings and seen a lot of improvement, and something my coach had mentioned was to find a higher compression golf ball? I think I understand the correlation between swing speed and compression being about 1/1 but! What would you guys recommend for an average swing speed around 100? (Driver ofc)
I’m really hoping I can avoid spending $70/dozen from Titlest haha (Canada)
Snell MTB-X, Maxfli Tour-X, Vice Pro Plus would be 3 I'd look at.
Definitely these. Very comparable to to the Top balls in golf and at a better price point. Vice also has some pretty nice and unique color options.
Bridgestone e6 is solid choice for under $30 (us) a dozen. It's not a high compression ball but my driver is 105+ and I like the feel of it.
Dude I found one in the woods proceeded play the best golf of my life on the last four holes and I've fully switched to these balls. Feel is unreal off of the teebox
Been using these myself. Just order four dozen from dicks yesterday with a gift card I still had sitting around.
Maxfli tour x. 2/60 at Dicks.
Best golf ball for money and it’s not close
Look up Modern Golf in Oakville; they sell ‘practice’ TP5x balls for $22 per dozen. The balls are brand new and the only difference is they say ‘PRACTICE’ on them, they play exactly the same as retail TP5x.
I actually like the practice marking as it makes it easy to identify your ball on the course. I think this is the best deal I’ve come across for a brand new Tour level ball.
Don’t do it. Your coach is obviously trying to get you more distance and efficiency out of your swing speed.
The modern Kirklands are very affordable but are always the highest spinning golf balls tested. You would lose distance due to extra spin since you don’t need help keeping the ball in the air.
Good thing they are so cheap because they slice further than any other ball.
TXG reserves them as a secret weapon when players need extra spin.
Just going to toss in the Kirkland option right quick there.
Just to add, they’re made by the same company that make Taylormade’s, obviously not the same design for legal reasons
You get that though, right? Like, Company X manufacturers a ball for TaylorMade. Company X also uses this equipment to make a ball for Costco. That’s where it ends. My name is Big D. I was asked to assemble a bookcase from Walmart that cost $12. The next day I was asked to assemble a bookcase from IKEA that costs $300. Big D assembled both. But IKEA gave me better parts, a better design, a bookcase that has been designed then redesigned then perfected. Walmart gave me particle board and some masking tape.
I’ve started playing about a year ago almost to the date. So far I’ve just been buying recycled misc brands for ~$0.50 a ball because a lot go into the water or woods. I’m a few lessons deep now and have a decent swing and am losing much less balls (less than 6 a round which is down from almost 2 dozen a round). Wanting to try to just get something consistent that’ll be “my ball” for a long time so that I can get used to them and remove that variable. I will also add I have a pretty high swing speed (driver is 115+ mph) if that matters for ball selection. Any recommendations?
Going to be completely honest, if you're still losing 4-6 balls per round removing that variable isn't going to make a difference yet and you should still play something pretty inexpensive. I'd go to a local sporting goods store and buy a few dozen of a cheaper 2pc ball if you want to be playing the same thing, but at this point it's not high on the list of things I'd say you need to do to improve.
Yeah I definitely get that. Probably something more to worry about later. I guess I just wanted to go ahead and get something consistent to get used to. But definitely understandable.
Any ball that is cheap is made of the same component parts. It’s a two piece design that is not up to the rigorous testing process.
Wilson, Srixon, Mizuno, Kirkland, MaxFli are all brands that want your money and are trying to grow their golf ball brands with very little success.
ProV1x left Dash.
You should probably play the Master’s edition Pro V1 exclusively
Kirklands
At 6 lost balls per round I would probably still be using whatever I can find for cheapest, but if you get down to ~2 lost balls per round I’d consider getting good condition used ProV1x, TP5x, Chrome Soft/Tour X balls. I started using 4A Chrome Soft Xs that you can get for ~$1.50/ball and I will probably continue to do so for a long time (unless I decide to switch balls, and then I’ll just get whatever other ball used for a similar price)
What type of balls do you use? HC21 golfer so looking to get something middle range that’s decent and isn’t like $8 a ball (as I obviously lose a few). What do you guys use?
I’m a huge fan of the direct to consumer brands out there like Snell, Vice and Oncore. They all have deals where if you buy 5 dozen they are ~$25 a dozen. I’m currently playing the Vice Pro Plus and it’s long of the tee and has plenty of spin on the green.
I’m also a big Vice fan. I buy the “Tour” model and they’re $15/dozen. I also pick up balls on deals at different places. Playing the Callaway Hex Tour Soft from Costco for the last few weeks, $10/dozen and good enough for me.
I’m the same HCP as OP.
Callaway Hex Tour Soft from Costco gets my vote, especially because they are on sale right now. I think they are a great deal for 10$/dozen.
Upvote for Snell. MTB Black here.
Costco’s Signature brand is a good value.
This is the best bang for your buck with your handicap. They also have a calaway golf ball there that is about the same price. Maybe 3$ more for a name brand 2dozen.
Srixons are great and golfballs.com is currently having a buy one get one sale for current line balls
Whatever I find in the woods or water. I haven’t bought golf balls in years.
Bridgestone Tour B RXS. Long off the tee, soft and spin-y around the green, and durable AF. I’ve played 36 holes (back to back 81s) with a single ball and it was still usable.
Golf ball addict rated the tour s great for the average player with a ton of value for the price. What's reddit think?
They’re great golf balls. Unless you’re tour quality these are as good for you as the premium balls. Soft, spinny, great distance.
Absolutely love them. I play the tour X and don’t see myself buying a different brand of ball for a long time. The distance is incredible and the spin with wedges is insanely good
I was thinking about trying the x, but my driver is only 92mph. But i do lime firmer ball, with them i creasing the tour to 95 that might be a better fit for me
Did you end up trying either Tour or Tour X? I’m playing Tour X but have just a slightly higher swing speed than you, so thinking about moving to Tour. Plus the X’s feel like a rock when I putt with them and I’m wondering if the Tours would help
Maxfli balls are some of the best value you could get. They are good bargain versions the Pro v1, pro v1x, and avx.
They’re not bad. I still like pro-v better but maxfli is hard to beat for the price when dicks has their 4 boxes for $100 sale.
Would you prefer that over 5 dozen near mint prov1 for $104 or 4 dozen mint prov1 for $121?
Given my inherent distrust of the internet I wouldn't buy used balls.
Meh. They’re ok.
I am golfing this season after a ~decade long hiatus. I'm still getting the hang of it, shooting 100-105. One thing that I've read is that if you want to improve, it's smart to stick with one ball, so you can get familiar with its performance. I find I actually make better shots with harder, non-premium balls. I find the "distance" type balls don't slice quite as bad when I do have an off center shot. Maybe that's just mental because I'm afraid of losing ProVs or TP5s. I played well today with a Taylormade lethal distance, but I don't think it's made anymore. I've read that premium balls like ProVs are meant for players with 100+ mph swing speeds. Idk what my swing speed is, but I'm sure it's not 100. I usually hit my driver ~230. 7i 140-150. So what are some balls I should try out for a slower swing speed and so so accuracy?
Edit: thanks for the suggestions, I'm planning on buying a shitload of dozens from Lostgolfballs to test.
Vice Pro Soft. $25doz when you buy 5 online. Made for mid swing speeds. Putts better than the ProV1.
I was thinking about trying out Project S over these. Have you had a chance with those yet?
I really like the project s - but not so much the matte finish for the colored balls which I need. I love the project a but just lose too many for $35/dz. But the S is a really solid ball for $25/dz.
E6 Soft
Callaway Super soft
Taylormade Burner soft
Try the Top Flite Gamer Tours, they’re 19 bucks a dozen, often on sale buy one get one free. They aren’t as soft as ProV1’s but have urethane covers that feel nice when putting and chipping
Bridgestone e-6
Q Stars are the real deal thats all i play now
I know im gonna catch some grief for this but im ready to become a better golfer. I have been using top flite xl distance for the last year due to price and can hit some solid drives (300ish). Now that im only losing one or two balls per round and consistently getting around 90, I think its time to upgrade and see if that helps. I swing the driver very hard and have yet to learn how to control the spin around the green. I just play it short and let it roll out. Should I stick with the cheap xl distance or what are some ball recommendations?
Callaway super soft
Super soft are decent, but if he's actually driving 300 yards, they feel like mush, and he'd probably be leaving some distance on the table. I do like how they feel around the green though, and price to performance is pretty good.
For me, it's really tough to beat the performance/price equation of Kirklands.
I must say I think this is one of the worst golf balls on the market. I didn't realize how badly these golf balls were hurting my game until I stopped playing them! Save yourself while you can. Don't say I didn't try to help.
You might want to work on your swing.
Spinlands make my slice worse
Srixon soft feel, they have a pretty good sale once a year.
Vice, try some different options out and bulk orders save you some money if you like a model.
I love the feel of srixon soft feel and the AD333/Q Star
Mygolfspy says maxfli is best bang for the buck.
Maxfli Tour or Tour X with your swing speed.
Titlelist velocity
Do you guys have favourite alignments on golf balls? What about price, feel, distance?
A combination of low spin off the tee and good spin off the wedge. Soft feel, but not mushy. Nice pop off the putter. Not very expensive.
Precept Laddie X.
Best budget golfball ever produced !
I need to try this. The only Laddie X’s I’ve ever hit were found in the woods
24 pack on Amazon for 25 bucks
I decided I could afford $2/ball and found the best fit at that price point.
Titleist Trufeel
Great ball.
Big ones! I like the biggest golfballs available.
Who's got big balls?
Callaway has a ball that is bigger if you were serious
I Google best golf ball for 30 handicap that slices into the woods and go with the cheapest one.
I always search for this years hidden gem. This year it’s the Maxfli Tour. A few years back it was Kirkland. I sprinkle in some Pro Vs along the way.
Heard a lot of good things about the maxfli tours
What type of ball do you play?
What is your handicap?
Was there a reason specific to on course performance that you chose that ball? If yes, what was it?
Callaway Super Soft. Reasonable price for a great feeling ball in my opinion. The ball also rolls very well for putting.
what do you use when windy
Still searching. Was the older TP5x but they changed that ball. Testing bridgestone bx and srixon zstar xv. You got something you like besides Left dash ?
TM Tour Response
5.3
I like a soft ball that doesn’t spin too much with a urethane cover.
AVX
5
Just love the soft feel and control (probably mostly mental but that’s half the game right?!)
Srixon Z-star XV
Don't keep an official handicap, 84~ on average
Performs fantastic off the driver, height on irons is great, spins like mad around the green, and can regularly be found on sale.
Srixons seem to be the most durable of the urethane balls in my experience
Yeah just gonna upvote this because exactly same down to the average score. I like the feel off the putter too, maybe it's just my brain tricking me but I feel like it's a little firmer off the putter face and I can actually feel where/how I struck any putt.
Second this! Try the diamonds!
I have 3 boxes brand new if you want to buy them super cheap
A couple of times a year (usually father's day and labor day) academy sports will do buy two get one free.
Been a fan of the Bridgestone offerings for a bit now. I have a slower (less than 105 mph) swing and the Tour B RX is a great compromise for me. If you are looking for a cheaper option, the E12 and E6 varieties are good too.
Pro V1X Left Dash all the way. It's so long yet so controllable into and around greens. I absolutely love it.
Believe it or not I just got one of my local pro shops to split up a box of —Pro V1 s for me! What’s your typical club head speed? I’m about 96-100. How’s the spins for you? Does it feel clicky off the putter or wedge miss hits?
Nice enjoy them! I'm between 115-117 mph but I'm an ex college baseball player so excess spin is my nemesis. I'm still working on my driver delivery but the left dash is helping me get just under 3k rpms on average. The biggest difference for me was iron and wedge spin on full shots. I was able to get my spin more optimized for each iron without needing to strengthen my lofts. It is definitely a firm ball and makes a harder sound than the Pro V1 but I would say it sounds similar to the X off the putter and wedges.
Z-star XV
Bomber off the driver, spins like mad around the green, cover is pretty durable for a spinny urethane ball.
Unlike pro-v1's, they actually go on sale
I pick these up when they do 3-for-2 sales, and alternate with vice pro plus when they run deals. But man - I've started to notice a lot more zip on the XV. Exactly as you describe, it goes like hell off the tee too
I played pro V1x and tp 5x for years before switching to these. No noticeable difference for me, tbh I think the XV may be more durable.
Titleist on sale right now
Q-star Divides. Something about that strobing effect is so pleasing
The free one at the course
Especially the washed ones in the pond
I’ve been just playing a wide variety of golf balls and I can see how it hurts my consistency. I still lose a ball here and there so I want something affordable. Thanks!
Underrated ball. Second only to titleist in lots of testing.
24 new balls for like $28. Can’t beat it. I prefer Callaway super soft but I’m not out here trying to play on the tour
I’m a 13 and play the Maxfli tour and love it.
This ball is amazing for the price
Pretty much Unbeatable. Srixon z stars are close if you find them buy 2 get one.
My go to is a 3-piece Ionomer cover ball. They are Cheaper than urethane covered balls but provide more spin than 2 piece balls around and into the green. They have less spin than premium balls, which I like off the driver. There are not many balls in this class…
I got so fed up losing and buying golfballs I started filling my bag with rangeballs…
Don't do this.
You're limiting your game. Sure, firing the occasional range ball that you find is fine, but don't ONLY use them.
Buy cheaper balls and use them until you can learn to keep balls in play. You will lose balls though, just accept it.
you get kicked off the course here when you do that. also, rangeballs fly significantly less far than proper balls.
Callaway super soft
I’m off 13 and this is my new ball, I’m done with anything else now.
It flies long, stops quick and is a joy to chip with, yes it does run on a touch when chipping but it’s a small price to pay otherwise.
I play those or srixon soft feel. Both great
I have $300 in PGA Superstore gift cards I would like to spend on golf balls, but I genuinely don’t know what direction to go. I’ve always gone back between the Pro V1 and V1x, but I tried chrome tours recently and they performed great. I would love some advice on the right golf ball for me based on some numbers below. To preface, feel and brand don’t matter that much to me.
Numbers from a full swing sim and a chrome tour ball. Order: Carry/Ball Speed/Backspin/Launch
Driver (8.5 deg): 301/179/2605/9.5 4 iron (22 deg): 227/151.5/6233/13.5 7 iron (33 deg): 189/130.7/17.4/6551 PW (45 deg): 148/108.8/9097/26.2 54 degree: 117/95/8921/29.7
I could use some more spin with the shorter clubs and around the green, and my miss is a high push fade with everything 4 iron and above so I don’t want something too spinny on longer shots. Happy to provide some more context/numbers if it helps, any advice is appreciated!
weirdly enough with those numbers I've seen people be pleasantly surprised with the Bridgestone e12's if you want more directional/distance control and Vice Pro Plus if you want a bit more green spin with comparable control everywhere else.
I've seen the Bridgestones eliminate over-fading on a few guys, and me personally I tend to actually see more backspin on full wedge shots that I've never gotten elsewhere. Give it a shot
Get a ball fitting. Or go to a sim and test several. You’ve got data on one ball. Do that for your top 5 or whatever.
I’ve looked around me for a ball fitting and can’t seem to find one anywhere besides a golf galaxy, which I’m not sure how reliable they will be. But I can definitely do the sim testing
Am weekend golfer, buying good balls that I like and few discount stuff is making my happy for weeks
You gotta get a pair of shoes. What is your shoe situation now?
I certainly would but I’m good on shoes luckily. Got a pair of the Nike Victory Pro’s recently and absolutely love them. I have a solid backup pair of GFore’s as well so thankfully I can avoid that spend
One of each color? I have black brown white blue grey.
Srixon was doing B2G1 dozen golf balls free. Good deal and fantastic ball, very underrated.
Looking to make a switch off Kirkland. 15 hcp
I miss the old NXT Tours.
Any recommendations? 95 swing speed on irons. Def need something high compression.
MaxFli Tour is gunna be a popular one on here.
The New Wilson Triad is supposed to be really good
But a ball change probably isn’t going to fix your problem
Edit: OP originally said they couldn’t hit a fairway to save their life, that’s what my last statement was aimed at
>MaxFli Tour is gunna be a popular one on here.
You'll want the Tour X model through.
But yes, the Maxfli Tour and Tour X are the best balls for the money.
The vice pro plus is my favorite. I’ve been playing them the last 2 years. We have similar swing speeds
Pretty affordable too. I’m gonna give a sleeve a try
Personally: Srixon Z Star. Like the lower ballflight with the short irons/wedges and the softness around the greens.
For you: Z Star XV/Diamond, Maxfli Tour X, Bridgestone Tour B X. Something along those lines
Play whatever you find in the woods when you are looking for your ball.
I don’t lose many balls during a round. 1-2 tops. Usually none
Wait until you can hit a fairway to save your life before you spend more than you are on kirklands.
Edit: original post said “I can’t hit a fairway to save my life” - OP edited it, I’m not just assuming
That’s not what I meant. I meant the spin on Kirkland is killing me
The spin isn’t why your missing fairways
I chose driver but after thinking it through its irons. Driver I either slice or have a nice fade and that's 100% my failure, I'm confident I can get up with a chip or flop on any elevated green I've played on with any ball, and putting isn't effected much as long as I've practiced with the same ball before.
I try to avoid soft balls because I lose distance with my irons, I usually have to club up 1 or 2 clubs, and I don't like having to pull out my 5 iron at 165 yards instead of 185-195y.
You’ve got me thinking I’ve been at this all backwards. Poll results look that way too.
I found a ball I like to putt with, just a feel thing, and so I fixated on that and figured it shouldn’t matter to my other shots (I’m high hcp, so just hitting is most important factor).
So I’ve been gaming the q-star tour, and it’s super soft. I found a couple ProV1s in the rough the other day and hit some practice shots in the fairway with them. Mind blown. So much pop. But I hated the feel on the green bc I’m used to a soft ball.
I’d never buy ProV1s bc of $ and I lose too many, but thinking I need to switch to an affordable similarly hard ball and just get used to it on the green.
Your point on approach distance is great, I could definitely benefit from using one less club for same yardage.
I mean if you're happy with your distances and how you're doing with them around the green, I wouldn't change. Sure a few more yards will get you closer most of the time, but you may find more struggles in the short game, and there's no recovery for a missed putt. Wouldn't hurt to try but the short game is where it's important for most. I do envy those that can stick a flop without roll or even rolling back.
Do you really lose 20 yards by using a different ball? My experience is 5-6 yards max. What two different balls are you referencing?
Maybe not 20 exactly, but pretty close on my long irons when you consider that coming up short on elevated greens means virtually no roll after.
Edit: Many different balls, this will happen with tp5 vs tp5x, superhots vs supersofts, and cross brands. I mostly play $6/dozsn Nitro ultimate distance balls but am currently shopping for a new, better ball. I post distance from the Nitros vs Vice and Bridgestone soft balls. it seems less dramatic when I switch to tour balls vs the Nitros, but same brand normal vs soft, I hit the normals further every time.
Why do you care about the number on the bottom of the club rather than just using the one that will get it there. I dont care if i can hit a 7 iron 120 or 190 yards as long as it is consistent, predictable, and repeatable.
It's not at all about the number on the club. It's about having tighter shot dispersion and higher apex at a given distance. I'm more likely to reach a green and stick with a shorter iron.
Definitely wedges. If I didn't end up in a spot that requires a wedge shot that checks up from time to time, I'd probably just play the cheapest ball available.
Whatever I found in the bushes on the previous hole.
The cheapest motherfucker I can find because it probably won't last more than 3 holes.
Price…
Average golfer. Used to be consistent mid to high 80s golfer, but stopped playing a lot and now and consistent low 90s who can occasionally end with a 99 or an 89.
Where I generally struggle most is off the tee. I have a faster than average swing speed, but nothing crazy. Enough to where I have a stiff shaft driver. All my bad hits are big banana slices due to my over the top swing (working on that)
I don’t struggle getting shots in the air. If anything people usually comment that my shots go too high.
Iron game is strong and can hit more than my fair share of greens from <150. Chipping is okay and putting is okay.
I tried Bridgestone e12 Straight balls last weekend and they were okay, but I didn’t love them. My drives were mostly slices with some weird miss hits to the left also. My approach shots were high and towering, but straight. Chipping and putting was worse than usual, but that’s only one time playing so I’m not going to blame that on the ball.
I know only one round isn’t enough to make a decision, but are there other balls out there that I should give a try? Playing again on Saturday
The best ball would be the most expensive ball you can stand losing. As always, start on and around the green. Which balls do you prefer, if price was not an option?
Usually this will be one of the premium balls. This is the best ball for your game, but maybe not for your wallet.
On to the recommendation: The srixon q-star is almost as good as the z-star but a lot cheaper. Try it!
Started by playing Kirklands. Excellent value. When I started losing fewer and having more wedges into greens, I noticed they scuffed pretty easily and began retiring more than I was losing.
Moved to Titleist Trufeels. Also excellent value and they seem to be a bit more durable. But I was having trouble with getting enough spin on driver and fairway woods. Seems odd, but you can cruise around 105mph club head speed, 3 degrees up and still hit 500rpm backspin duck hooks.
Tried a Maxfli Tour X, and they are phenomenal. Enough spin, durable as hell and excellent value.
Maxfli tours have been exceptional the last couple of years, they're really flying under the radar.
Even though my kirklands barely last a round they're still a better value than basically anything else out there. Even if I gouge one with a wedge and have to swap it out.
Srixon Q-star Tour. Watch some video tests on it
Safe yourself the stress and money and just go with the new Kirkland ball, it’s better than decent and hopefully won’t matter when you lose 4 off the tee
Any cheap 3 piece modern ball. Maxfli, Kirkland, Vice, the list goes on.
Lets fix some slices and reasons we lose golf balls and then upgrade to some nicer stuff!
Best golf ball for long driving
Key Considerations for Choosing Golf Balls for Long Driving:
Compression: Look for low to mid-compression balls (70-90) that can maximize distance for players with slower swing speeds, while higher compression balls (90+) are better for faster swing speeds.
Core Design: A larger core can provide more energy transfer at impact, leading to greater distance. Look for balls with a high-energy core.
Cover Material: Urethane covers offer better spin control and feel, while ionomer covers are typically more durable and can provide more distance.
Dimple Pattern: A deeper and more aerodynamic dimple pattern can help reduce drag and increase lift, contributing to longer drives.
Ball Type: Consider using a two-piece ball for maximum distance, as they are designed for straight flight and lower spin.
Recommendations:
Titleist Pro V1x: Known for its excellent distance and control, it features a high-speed core and a durable cover, making it a favorite among long drivers.
Callaway Chrome Soft X: This ball offers a combination of distance and soft feel, with a high-speed core that enhances performance off the tee.
TaylorMade TP5x: With a five-layer construction, it provides exceptional distance and low spin off the driver, making it ideal for maximizing driving distance.
Srixon Q-Star Tour: A more budget-friendly option that still offers great distance and performance, suitable for players looking for a balance between distance and feel.
Takeaway: Choose a ball that matches your swing speed and preferences. Testing different options can help you find the best fit for your game.
