TL;DR
Recommended Brushes
For those with thick hair, several brushes have been recommended across discussions. The Unbrush is frequently mentioned as a favorite due to its ability to glide through thick hair easily [1:1]
[3:4]. However, some users noted that the handle can break easily
[3:5]. The Wet Brush Paddle is another popular choice, especially for wavy hair, due to its wide-spaced bristles which help in detangling without causing frizz
[2:1]. The Tangle Teezer is praised for its effectiveness on wet hair, particularly when used with a slippery conditioner
[3:6].
Sectioning Technique
A common technique suggested for managing thick hair is sectioning. Users recommend dividing hair into sections before brushing to ensure all layers are reached [1:3]
[1:4]. This method helps prevent tangles from being pushed downwards and forming bigger knots. Starting from the ends and working up to the roots is advised to minimize damage and effectively detangle
[1:3].
Avoiding Frizz
For those concerned about frizz, it is suggested to avoid brushing dry hair, especially if it's wavy or curly [2:2]. Using a mixture of leave-in conditioner and water can help maintain waves and reduce volume
[2:3]. Additionally, using products like gel on wash days can aid in keeping hair manageable
[2:3].
Product Recommendations Beyond Discussions
While these discussions provide valuable insights, consider exploring other high-quality brushes such as Tek brushes, which are known for their durability and effectiveness [5:4]. Investing in a brush specifically designed for thick hair can make daily grooming more efficient and less damaging.
I have dummy thick hair, like really thick. This is probably the longest and thickest it’s ever been, and lately I’ve been noticing that brushing it with my regular hairbrush (just a standard Wet brand hair brush) isn’t doing it. It’s not reaching deep enough and so the inner layer of my hair stays tangled. I can brush it out still but it’s a hassle and isn’t always super obvious. Any hairbrush recommendations, preferable ones that are pretty big and deep and that can reach to the inner parts of my hair? Thanks!
Your hair seems to be similar to mine. It’s pretty thick and hard to take care of and frizzes at the slightest hint of heat. I wish I had recommendations but I avoid brushing it when it’s dry because that absolutely ruins it. When it’s wet it’s pretty condensed so I never really had that problem
I probably need to start using some heat protecting spray or something
I just put the top layer in a pony and brush the underneath then when it’s done I brush the top layer. No brush is going to get through all the layer you have to do it in sections.
100% . Even with a great brush, for thick hair is not easy ! Section your hair into 2-4 parts with clips, and that will majke brushing much more effective . Ensure you reach every layer. Always begin detangling at the ends and work your way up to the roots. This prevents pushing tangles downwards and creating bigger knots. Don't yank as most girls do.
I split mine into half and then half that top and bottom and brush but your idea sounds easier.
That’s a genius idea haha, idk how I’ve never thought of that.
No advice, love your hair. Just wanted to say you remind me so much of the actress Emma Kenney from Shameless!
Boar Bristle & Nylon Bristle Combo
Try the Unbrush!! It’s my favorite, I’d recommend pulling up portions of your hair for it, but the brush runs through like a dream
I have really thick wavy hair and every hairbrush I’ve used just makes my hair a big fluffy mess. I don’t have the time or money to use product in my hair every day and so my solution is to brush it and hope it’s good or put it up. What are some good (preferably affordable) hairbrushes that won’t make my hair all frizzy and will instead keep its shape? Or is my hair just destined to lose its waves and gain so much volume every time I brush it?
I don’t think it’s an issue with the hairbrush. It sounds to me like you have wavy/curly hair. Try only brushing it when it’s wet
so what do I do when my hair’s disheveled in the morning?
Make a mixture of leave in conditioner and water. Spray it in your hair in the morning. You can also use some gel on your washday. I agree with this comment that it has nothing to do with the hairbrush. You need a simple wavy routine. The start could just be a leave in conditioner
I also have thick and wavy hair! If i'm being honest, it's nearly impossible to make it look (fairly) nice without some hair products and heat styling, if that's your thing.
For my thick and wavy hair, the paddle brush by WetBrush has worked wonders! The bristles have ample space between them, which makes it great for detangling thick hair. Just one tip: avoid oval brushes at all costs!! The shape of them does NOT work as a hair brush.
I hope this helps! :)
how long does it take you for your routine and what would you recommend? I really just hate how my hair looks right now
Between this and the UnBrush (I use that on only slightly damp hair, the Teezer I use when the hair is soaking wet) I will be a customer for life.
Yes this is definitely a keeper ! She doesn’t like the unbrush so much . My favorite brush to use is the Curl keeper (on my own hair)😍They are game changers for sure
The Unbrush is amazingggg..Ive used a knock off version on wet and dry..makes detangling a breeze 😂
What Unbrush do you use? I looked on Amazon and all the types only have white people in the pictures 🥲
Ive been using it for years. Very durable.
Some of the other trendy brushes have broke. I had 2 unbrushes that broke at the handle. My hair is waistlength 4b.
I love the unbrush but that handle breaking off made me so mad 😡. I went through 3 until I realized it wasn't just dumb luck bc like how y'all can't make a better handle 😑. The only thing I don't like about the teezer is, although it probably won't break, it slips out my hands when I'm applying product on wet hair 🤦🏿♀️
My 4c Nigerian hair would snap it in half 😂
My kiddo had Nigerian 4C (we joke that it's 4D), and the Tangle Teaser works great as long as her hair is wet with a strong slippery product in it, like a thick conditioner. I can get it all the way through her dense, low-porosity, gorgeous coils.
What type of moisturizer/ leave in conditioner does she use for her hair and scalp?
Oh no !! My older daughter’s hair probably would too. She uses a different brush or her fingers🤭
Tangle teezer

First post here, the title says it all. I have hair almost to my waist but extremely fine. Do you guys have any recommendations for a quality brush suitable for my hair type? Cost is not an issue. Thank you!
Wet brush. Whether its on wet or dry hair, its a favourite. I don't think I've met anyone who dislikes them.
Do you like it better than Drybar’s Super Lemon brush?
I’ve never used that one in particular, so I can’t say if I have a preference. They look to be similar products though.
Tek brushes are good. Tk Maxx tend to have them online and in store for under £10 usually they are roughly around £40 I think
Thank you!
I originally bought an iblend to use for coloring/bleaching techniques but I now use it as my regular brush as well. It’s super gentle and a great detangler. Might be tricky to find as it’s targeted towards stylists.
I also really love wet brushes. They are super gentle as well and not too pricey.
I have a wooden brush and Mason Pierson brush
Do you like your MP brush? I have fine hair prone to breakage and am undecided
Wooden brush, wet brush
I’ll have to try a wooden brush - I use a Wet brush now, and they work great for awhile and then some of the bristles go crooked and pull hair out.
Tangle teezer with a handle (link) actually glides through the hair. It used to take me literal hours to work through my hair when it was tangled, going section by section with my previous tools.
Yes I love this one!
I have tailbone-lenth, wavy hair. A wooden comb works perfect for me!
Any particular brand you’d reccomend?
I have one from The Bodyshop that I like, but I think any wide-tooth comb will do :)
Yup yup, wooden wide tooth combs for life
Thank you!
I use a boar bristle brush and a wooden comb - perfect for detaining, oil distribution, and shine. I also have long thick hair. 👍
I have thick curly hair down to the middle of my back and this brush is amazing. They sell it in purple and pink/blue as well.
This is the best brush I have ever bought that I didn’t pay $$$ for. It doesn’t pull my hair, and I can use it for a blowout easily. I have two of these and use them everyday.💘
couldn't believe how well this worked... i used to think the unbrush was kinda gimmicky, but i just got boho braids (which are notoriously difficult to keep untangled) and this thing makes it so easy
Same. I didn’t really get how a brush could be different from any other brush but I think because the little balls that are normally on the end of the bristles of normal brushes aren’t on the bristles on this one, your hair slides out easier. I need to brush it through my hair more but when I do, it teases the tangles out without pulling my hair or getting caught, so it’s less discomfort and untangles my hair easier. I know it’s not great to brush your hair when it’s wet, but that’s what I use this for and it’s great for that.
I thought wet brushing was the preferred method for curls?
I've used only a denman brush for years but this brush works just as well
I love how easy it is to clean as well. This is my ONLY brush that doesn’t look crusty at the end of the week lmao
I just got this brush too and I’m liking it
If you have ever considered purchasing it, do it. I have thick course (4c) hair and wash day has always been a chore for me. I’ve tried several tools to detangle my hair such as creams, conditioners, combs, and brushes and nothing has made the process easier. The unbrush quickly detangled my hair and allowed me to style with ease. I’m just happy to finally find something that shortens my wash day. Do yourself a favor and get it!
I used it to detangle my toddlers hair along with pattern detangling nectar. The crying has gone way less
And if you don’t have unbrush money, dollar tree has a dupe, got mine from there
Noted. I also have 4C hair and thought it was marketing bs.
Same! Sad I went this long without one.
Yeah, I love it. I love the unbrush flex version even more.
I bought one & it does a really good job of detangling.
I'm struggling with lots of tangles and some breakage and I suspect it's because I use the wrong comb. What should I be looking for?
I use the wet brush, I also got the tangle teezer large wet brush, but It doesn't work as good as the wet brush does for me for detangling. I'm always looking for a better detangle brush. My hair is like spiderwebs and a rats nest all in one.
Invest in a solid wooden brush and comb. wood is porous and helps distribute your natural oils better than a plastic brush. Oiling the ends of your hair and then working with the wooden brush will help distribute that oil and make your ends easier to to brush as well. I personally use the brush pre shower and the comb post shower as I have wavy hair and don’t want to ruin my patterns with a brush.
A wet brush in the shower with conditioner in your hair will also do the trick if you are really struggling.
Seconding wet brush. I didn’t think it could be that good until I got one as a gift. It’s a lifesaver and the only type of brush I will use for detangling from now on
I use a Wet Brush when my hair is damp (but brushing and combing wet hair does not work for everyone).
On dry hair, I find wooden brushes to be the most gentle. Always brush from the bottom up, too! :)
I already brush from the bottom up. Never tried a tangle teezer or a wooden brush. Do the bristles on the latter matter?
Wet Brush* is my life saver.
It's makes a great stocking stuffer, too!
Yes, a wooden brush with plastic bristles is no different than an all-plastic brush. I find wooden bristles feel better on my scalp and they also help with static! They don't tug at my hair as much as the thick plastic bristles on regular brushes do.
I've never tried a Tangle Teezer but my Wet Brush's bristles, though plastic, are thin and flexible enough for damp hair. They don't do a very good job of detangling my hair while it's dry, though, which is why I like wooden brushes for that!
Tangle teezer.
I like the Thick and curly or the Large Wet detangler.
They have some specific to fine hair but I need the longer bristles.
I’ve been using the wet brush and it’s been pulling my hair out. Considering I already have fine thin hair it really sucks. I was looking into the Unbrush but I hear people say it’s good or not good. I was wondering if anyone could give me some good recommendations. Greatly appreciated!
I have a purple wet brush that’s made specifically for detangling wet fine hair to a point that the bristles are very far apart. I run that through my hair first, THEN use my wet brush after the tangles are Allllll removed. Do you use a leave in conditioner?
So I use leave in conditioner during the winter mostly because of static. The product I have been using lately is the Redken One United Multi-Benefit Treatment Spray.
Would recommend using one in the summer as well. If you find the Redken to be too heavy, there may be lighter options
Highly recommend Johnson and Johnson Kids detangling spray. It’s magic. I spray it on tangles and they just disappear. I haven’t struggled to run my Wet Brush through my hair in months.
It’s in a green spray bottle. Got it from Amazon.
I use a plastic comb, it’s gentle on my hair. I never use brush as I feel it’s too harsh.
same here..i use a wide tooth comb when it’s wet and then i have my grandma’s ollllldddddd teasing comb that i use when it’s dry
Tangle Teezer! Thank me later
Noted thank you!
I went from a Tangle Teezer to a Unbrush. I lose a lot less hair with the Unbrush!
