What Redditors are Saying

Best Hair Brushes for Thick Hair

TL;DR

  • Recommended brushes: Unbrush, Wet Brush Paddle, Tangle Teezer.
  • Techniques: Sectioning hair and detangling from ends to roots.

Recommended Brushes

For those with thick hair, several brushes have been recommended across discussions. The Unbrush is frequently mentioned as a favorite due to its ability to glide through thick hair easily [1:1][3:4]. However, some users noted that the handle can break easily [3:5]. The Wet Brush Paddle is another popular choice, especially for wavy hair, due to its wide-spaced bristles which help in detangling without causing frizz [2:1]. The Tangle Teezer is praised for its effectiveness on wet hair, particularly when used with a slippery conditioner [3:6].

Sectioning Technique

A common technique suggested for managing thick hair is sectioning. Users recommend dividing hair into sections before brushing to ensure all layers are reached [1:3][1:4]. This method helps prevent tangles from being pushed downwards and forming bigger knots. Starting from the ends and working up to the roots is advised to minimize damage and effectively detangle [1:3].

Avoiding Frizz

For those concerned about frizz, it is suggested to avoid brushing dry hair, especially if it's wavy or curly [2:2]. Using a mixture of leave-in conditioner and water can help maintain waves and reduce volume [2:3]. Additionally, using products like gel on wash days can aid in keeping hair manageable [2:3].

Product Recommendations Beyond Discussions

While these discussions provide valuable insights, consider exploring other high-quality brushes such as Tek brushes, which are known for their durability and effectiveness [5:4]. Investing in a brush specifically designed for thick hair can make daily grooming more efficient and less damaging.

I have dummy thick hair, like really thick. This is probably the longest and thickest it’s ever been, and lately I’ve been noticing that brushing it with my regular hairbrush (just a standard Wet brand hair brush) isn’t doing it. It’s not reaching deep enough and so the inner layer of my hair stays tangled. I can brush it out still but it’s a hassle and isn’t always super obvious. Any hairbrush recommendations, preferable ones that are pretty big and deep and that can reach to the inner parts of my hair? Thanks!

Your hair seems to be similar to mine. It’s pretty thick and hard to take care of and frizzes at the slightest hint of heat. I wish I had recommendations but I avoid brushing it when it’s dry because that absolutely ruins it. When it’s wet it’s pretty condensed so I never really had that problem

I probably need to start using some heat protecting spray or something

I just put the top layer in a pony and brush the underneath then when it’s done I brush the top layer. No brush is going to get through all the layer you have to do it in sections.

raver4444 · 2 months ago

100% . Even with a great brush, for thick hair is not easy ! Section your hair into 2-4 parts with clips, and that will majke brushing much more effective . Ensure you reach every layer. Always begin detangling at the ends and work your way up to the roots. This prevents pushing tangles downwards and creating bigger knots. Don't yank as most girls do.

I split mine into half and then half that top and bottom and brush but your idea sounds easier.

Desperately in need of hairbrush

Posted by Away-Code-3974 · in r/Hair · 1 month ago

I have really thick wavy hair and every hairbrush I’ve used just makes my hair a big fluffy mess. I don’t have the time or money to use product in my hair every day and so my solution is to brush it and hope it’s good or put it up. What are some good (preferably affordable) hairbrushes that won’t make my hair all frizzy and will instead keep its shape? Or is my hair just destined to lose its waves and gain so much volume every time I brush it?

I don’t think it’s an issue with the hairbrush. It sounds to me like you have wavy/curly hair. Try only brushing it when it’s wet

so what do I do when my hair’s disheveled in the morning?

1 upvotes on reddit
floatingclouds37 · 1 month ago

Make a mixture of leave in conditioner and water. Spray it in your hair in the morning. You can also use some gel on your washday. I agree with this comment that it has nothing to do with the hairbrush. You need a simple wavy routine. The start could just be a leave in conditioner

1 upvotes on reddit
Excellent-Papaya-848 · 1 month ago

I also have thick and wavy hair! If i'm being honest, it's nearly impossible to make it look (fairly) nice without some hair products and heat styling, if that's your thing.

For my thick and wavy hair, the paddle brush by WetBrush has worked wonders! The bristles have ample space between them, which makes it great for detangling thick hair. Just one tip: avoid oval brushes at all costs!! The shape of them does NOT work as a hair brush.

I hope this helps! :)

I love the unbrush but that handle breaking off made me so mad 😡. I went through 3 until I realized it wasn't just dumb luck bc like how y'all can't make a better handle 😑. The only thing I don't like about the teezer is, although it probably won't break, it slips out my hands when I'm applying product on wet hair 🤦🏿‍♀️

My kiddo had Nigerian 4C (we joke that it's 4D), and the Tangle Teaser works great as long as her hair is wet with a strong slippery product in it, like a thick conditioner. I can get it all the way through her dense, low-porosity, gorgeous coils.

I originally bought an iblend to use for coloring/bleaching techniques but I now use it as my regular brush as well. It’s super gentle and a great detangler. Might be tricky to find as it’s targeted towards stylists.

I also really love wet brushes. They are super gentle as well and not too pricey.

8 upvotes on reddit
K
kristenzoeybeauty · OP · 3 months ago

Same. I didn’t really get how a brush could be different from any other brush but I think because the little balls that are normally on the end of the bristles of normal brushes aren’t on the bristles on this one, your hair slides out easier. I need to brush it through my hair more but when I do, it teases the tangles out without pulling my hair or getting caught, so it’s less discomfort and untangles my hair easier. I know it’s not great to brush your hair when it’s wet, but that’s what I use this for and it’s great for that.

Buy the Unbrush!

Posted by katty3254 · in r/Naturalhair · 15 days ago

If you have ever considered purchasing it, do it. I have thick course (4c) hair and wash day has always been a chore for me. I’ve tried several tools to detangle my hair such as creams, conditioners, combs, and brushes and nothing has made the process easier. The unbrush quickly detangled my hair and allowed me to style with ease. I’m just happy to finally find something that shortens my wash day. Do yourself a favor and get it!

Invest in a solid wooden brush and comb. wood is porous and helps distribute your natural oils better than a plastic brush. Oiling the ends of your hair and then working with the wooden brush will help distribute that oil and make your ends easier to to brush as well. I personally use the brush pre shower and the comb post shower as I have wavy hair and don’t want to ruin my patterns with a brush.

A wet brush in the shower with conditioner in your hair will also do the trick if you are really struggling.

Yes, a wooden brush with plastic bristles is no different than an all-plastic brush. I find wooden bristles feel better on my scalp and they also help with static! They don't tug at my hair as much as the thick plastic bristles on regular brushes do.

I've never tried a Tangle Teezer but my Wet Brush's bristles, though plastic, are thin and flexible enough for damp hair. They don't do a very good job of detangling my hair while it's dry, though, which is why I like wooden brushes for that!

Best hair brushes for thick hair

Key Considerations for Choosing Hair Brushes for Thick Hair:

  1. Bristle Type:

    • Boar Bristles: Great for distributing natural oils and adding shine.
    • Nylon Bristles: Effective for detangling and smoothing thick hair.
    • Mixed Bristles: A combination can provide the benefits of both types.
  2. Brush Shape:

    • Wide-Tooth Comb: Ideal for detangling wet hair without causing breakage.
    • Paddle Brush: Good for smoothing and straightening thick hair.
    • Round Brush: Useful for adding volume and curl when blow-drying.
  3. Size:

    • Larger brushes can cover more surface area, making it easier to manage thick hair.
  4. Heat Resistance:

    • If you frequently use heat styling tools, look for brushes that are heat-resistant to prevent damage.
  5. Comfort and Grip:

    • A comfortable handle is essential for ease of use, especially when working through thick hair.

Recommendations:

  • Wet Brush Pro: Excellent for detangling wet or dry thick hair without causing breakage. The flexible bristles glide through knots easily.

  • Mason Pearson Popular Mixture Brush: A high-end option with a mix of boar and nylon bristles, perfect for smoothing and adding shine to thick hair.

  • Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer: While technically not a brush, this tool combines a round brush and hair dryer, making it great for styling thick hair quickly.

  • Tangle Teezer Thick & Curly Detangling Brush: Specifically designed for thick and curly hair, it helps to detangle without pulling or breaking strands.

Choosing the right brush can make a significant difference in managing and styling thick hair, so consider your specific needs and preferences when selecting one!
