Maintaining curly hair can be a challenge, especially if you're new to it or haven't found the right routine yet. Here are some key tips and recommendations from various discussions to help you manage and enhance your curls.
Understanding Your Hair Type and Porosity
Before diving into products and routines, it's important to understand your hair type and porosity. Knowing whether your hair is high, medium, or low porosity will guide you in selecting the right products [3:2]. High porosity hair absorbs moisture quickly but also loses it fast, while low porosity hair takes longer to absorb moisture. This knowledge can help you choose oils and conditioners that best suit your hair's needs.
Washing and Conditioning Routine
A solid washing and conditioning routine is crucial for curly hair maintenance. Many users suggest using a leave-in conditioner while your hair is still soaking wet to lock in moisture [2:1]. Additionally, using a clarifying shampoo occasionally can help remove product buildup without stripping your hair of its natural oils
[2]. It's also recommended to use a microfiber towel or a t-shirt to scrunch-dry your hair, which helps reduce frizz
[4:1].
Styling Products and Techniques
The choice of styling products can significantly impact the appearance of your curls. Curl creams, gels, and mousses are popular options for defining curls and reducing frizz [2:5]. Some users prefer to let their hair air dry without disturbing it after applying these products, while others use a diffuser on a low heat setting
[2:1]. Experimenting with different products and techniques will help you find what works best for your hair texture and desired style.
Nighttime Care
Protecting your curls overnight is essential to prevent them from becoming a tangled mess by morning. Using a silk pillowcase or wearing a satin bonnet can help maintain your curls' shape and reduce friction [3:6]. Pineapple-ing your hair (tying it up loosely on top of your head) is another popular method to preserve curls while sleeping.
Community Resources and Support
For ongoing support and advice, consider joining online communities dedicated to curly hair care. Subreddits like /r/CurlyHairCare and /r/HaircareScience offer a wealth of information, including product recommendations and styling tips [1:1]
[3:3]. Engaging with these communities can provide personalized advice and encouragement as you refine your curly hair routine.
By understanding your hair's unique characteristics and experimenting with different products and techniques, you can develop a routine that keeps your curls healthy, defined, and beautiful.
I’m the only one in my family with curly hair. My mom never knew how to take care of it when I was a child so it’s always been frizzy and had sections of varying levels of curl. Recently, my hair is impossible to take care of, it gets knotted and matted almost instantly after brushing it, its really difficult to brush and it’s super dry. It’s also probably worth mentioning that it’s dyed, but it hasn’t been touched up in over 7 months so at this point it’s all me. If anyone out there with curls has any tips or holy grail products they’d like to share, I’d love you forever!
> I’m the only one in my family with curly hair.
There are several subreddits where you can go for hair related advice:
/r/hair is the biggest one.
Then there's /r/HaircareScience/
As well as /r/femalehairadvice/ and /r/malehairadvice
A lot of people have been complimenting me recently on my “curly hair”, and a few friends of mine recommended i come onto this subreddit and ask for tips and advice on how to help maintain my curls. I don’t exactly know my hair type, but i do have a routine that i do daily.
1.) use special clarifying shampoo 2.) use regular shampoo 3.) put in damage control conditioner 4.) dry hair a little bit then put in leave in conditioner
If there’s anything i could do to make my routine better, please let me know :))) I’d also really love if someone could let me know my hairtype :))
I would try putting your leave-in while your hair is still soaking wet out of the shower. I scrunch mine up and towards the scalp afterwards with a microfiber towel. I sort of do a small hold at the end and let any extra water dry off enough to not drip. I fully air dry mine. I never use heat or further products.
A lot of people will recommend mousse or gels to get the HOLD and then do a scrunch after its 100% dry with some type of hair oil on your hands. This works for more defined curls.
Ohhhhhh okay, that second part makes a lot more sense than what i have been doing, thank you so much
Your hair is gorgeous too by the way!~ The shape of it reminds me of mine. (Except I am dealing with frizz because of trichotillomania and growing it from nothing to damaged - sooo I am waiting to chop a bit off.)
A lot of videos about how people do gel and/or mousse vary. I think a nice curl cream and letting it dry with out disturbing it could also go a long way for you to have some really nice curls with out having gel or mousse involved. Some peoples hair just curl better or worse. Some weather conditions can ever cause your hair to be less or more defined!
I would also like to mention sleeping in a silk bonnet or changing your pillows to soft fabrics or even silk. I can't stand silk on my pillowcases due to it being soooo hot, so I use a squishmallow as my pillow and it's fabric has done wonders along side my flannel pillow cases. Also recommend a microfiber towel instead of a normal one! (Like a LOT!)
Your hair looks great! I’m not very good at typing sorry. But I think you should add something with hold to add a bit more definition. Either a mousse or a gel. Try some out and see if your hair likes it. I like the Ouidad whipped curls conditioning mousse and the LA looks blue gel. Then I scrunch out the crunch with either light Moroccan oil or verb ghost oil on my hands.
Thank you so much for the tip!! I have tried a mousse before, i don’t remember the name of the brand, but it didn’t seem to have much of an effect on my hair. . Currently i use a special curl cream, a Leave in conditioner, and curl gel. I find they help, but i still don’t get the texture I want. I will definitely try what you have suggested
Hope it works!

Okay so I thought I just had frizzy straight/wavy hair that got a bit curly when wet, but turns out… it’s actually curly all the time and I’ve just been treating it wrong my whole life 😅
I’ve been watching tons of videos and just bought a bunch of curly hair products, but now I’m overwhelmed and have no idea what I’m doing. Can someone help me figure out a good wash day routine? And also—how do I sleep with it so it doesn’t turn into a disaster overnight? I need to be able to go to work without looking like a mess lol.
I’m really trying to get into self-care and not keep throwing my hair into a bun every day. Any tips or routines would be super appreciated!
use a TONNN of ogx oil preshower, focusing on mids, ends, and the more damaged or dry parts of your hair. argan oil if ur hair is sensitive to coconut, coconut if ur hair isnt (a good way to tell is that if ur hair is more damaged and takes a rlly short time to get wet and dry its high porosity if its more healthy and takes ages to get wet and dry its low porosity, if its somewhere in the middle its medium porosity. if ur hair is high porosity, itll prolly love the coconut oil. if its low porosity, itll like the argan. if its medium, alternate on wash days.) make sure you NEVER detangle your hair dry unless its when you're pre-pooing it (which means the preshower treatment).
make sure you double shampoo, shampooing upside down can help get a better cleanse! also it looks like you have a scalp massager, which can help cleanse your hair more effectively! more so raking your conditioner in and praying hands it in is the way (something like in this vid: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/BtU2aUacUN8 btw: DONT APPLY CONDITIONER ON UR SCALP! it can weigh ur curls down esp if ur scalp isnt dry). make sure you leave ur conditioner in for 5 minutes (or at least dont wash it out right away). after 5 minutes, if you havent already detangled, detangle ur curls with ur wide tooth comb FROM THE ENDS UP!!! add more water instead of more product if you need more slip (slip is basically what you need to detangle curls easily).
first, make sure ur hair is SOAKING WET. you can experiment with damp styling later, but i find that damp styling gives you more frizz and volume. we want your curls to POP as much as they can! use a lott of that leave in, focusing on the mids and ends, especially on the damaged parts. use the mousse then gel, and on ur next wash day, try gel, then mousse! people use them both ways. i would say if u want ur curls to last longer, use mousse then gel, but if you want them to be more voluminous, gel then mousse! apply the mousse at the mids and ends, focusing on ur roots (if ur roots dont tend to get weighed down.) scrunch, pulse, and glaze the gel thru ur hair. use a microfiber towel or cotton tee to scrunch or like kind of squeeze out the excess water out of ur hair for reduced drying time.
hover diffuse ur hair up until ur gel cast forms. a gel cast is basically when ur hair looks stringy/wet/crunchy when its drying or dry. now pixie diffuse, or continue hover diffusing until dry.
use a lightweight oil, like the argan oil mist by ogx and apply it to ur hands. now scrunch your hair and take sections of ur curls and smoothh them down, which helps take out the cast for me!! also, dw if the cast doesnt form. it doesnt really matter for now.
also, you might need a clarifying shampoo (especially if your curls are low porosity or can get weighed down easily) the volumizing deep clean shampoo from pantene is a good one (https://pantene.com/en-us/product/sheer-volume-shampoo).
there are also some facs on here that would be helpful for you to read. checking out r/curlyhair and reading the facs and resources there on the curly hair method might also help your hair.
p.s. NEVER CO-WASH IM TELLING YOU, OK?
2nd p.s. co-washing is washing with only conditioner, which DOESNT WASH YOUR HAIR. conditioner hydrates, it doesnt cleanse. some shampoos are named as co-washes, which mean they hydrate more than they cleanse. you should get onto curly-tok, youll learn A LOT!

It looks like you got a lot of products. It takes a lot of experimenting to find a great routine for most people. I would start by trying the OGx coconut oil on the ends preshower then shampoo and condition as normal.
For my very dry, damaged 2c/3a fine hair and life in a very dry climate, what works is a lot of leave in and then mousse, then gel. If you hair isn’t as dry and damaged, then you won’t need as much leave in.
One thing that helped me was actually Voss the Curl boss’ routine. She is a curly haired hair stylist and she has a wash day and a refresh routine and they are simple. She also has a lot of knowledge because she has curly hair and she is a hair stylist. I do ignore her product recommendations, but the routine was extremely helpful.
Thank you for this! My hair is dry and damaged so I’m curious if you have a link to the video you’re referring to so I can give it a watch! About to start experimenting with the whole process right now lol

She also has wash day and refresh at the top of her instagram
I’ve been using this as my mouse, it’s a GOD send if you need some volume and structure to keep the frizz away
Mouse, night cap, silk pillows case
Style when wet not dry!
They both smell amazinggggg
Embrace it !
Hi! So I have curly hair but its not super curly, more wavy and long and idk how to take care of it. If anyone has any tips or a smililar hair please help. I always carry my hair in a ponytail because idk how to style it or take care of it :(
Hi! I recommend that you start following bloggers with the same curvature as yours and use similar products, there are countless ways to style wavy hair to enhance your curvature too

Hi! Here are the basics of curly care that near everyone agrees on:
These don’t apply to every single curly headed person but in general these are the most common things people do that help define and take care of your curls.
First off, your hair looks good now, but I hear you about the urge to cut it off!
Curly hair has a texture to each strand that makes them curl. That texture means it has trouble holding moisture like stick straight hair. So, there is a sidebar/information about basics around somewhere...I’m on my cell so it’s not as easy for me to see/find...that is a great place for products or techniques. Basically it all boils down to getting moisture into the hair strands and keeping it there until the water evaporates from washing it.
Thanks alot I'll make sure to check out the side bar. I appreciate you laying it out for me why sometimes my hair looks frizzy as hell
You’re welcome, good luck!
I've been thinking about cutting it but a lot of people recommended this thread and told me to try growing it out
Seriously you hair looks like goals. But definitely check out the CG Handbook and the Beginners Quickstart Guide under the community info for this subreddit.
Thank you :)
check out the stickied post on top of the sub called "start here! beginner info" and that should get you started!
I have curly-ish hair, and I've tried curl cream and all of those fancy products, but it just never really looks good. It also gets greasy in less than a day, so I can't even keep it the same for a while.
I tried to cut bangs and straighten them and they look cute, but a day after cutting them, they look horrible.. the second last picture is what my hair looks like all the time, frizzy and messy. I have to take a shower every day because my hair just gets oily soo fast so I literally wipe my hair routine away every day
The last picture is what I want my hair to look like. Nice, puffy defined curls that are not too tight and too defined. Someone please give me tips, especially for getting rid of oily hair!! I tried everything, I think it might be hormonal, though ☹️
Yes, a lot of the time adolescent girls have oily hair. It can last into your 20s. Have you tried a dry shampoo just on the roots on the worst days?
As for your frizzy days, that photo looks more like my dream best day. You have great curls! For frizz, you can try a few things:
Bangs are going to curl on a curly girl. You have to use heat or big curlers/brushes on them to prevent curl.
You can always learn to braid or do updos for the days you don’t like your hair. I hate hairspray, but some will use it to tame the little curlies when they do an updo. Curly hair will stay in updos better than straight hair does. You can look into cool sticks or pins to use to hold it up.
Edit: looking again at your photos, you just don’t have the same curl pattern as the girls in the last photo. You do have curls, they just start further down. That may mean that your fine hair cannot make curls up high with the weight of the longer hair weighing it down. If you are brave, you can get layers cut so that the top layers are shorter and make some curls higher up on your head. Or, get some curl clips (BounceCurl makes them I think) to hold the roots of your hair up to get texture at the top. Or, get the BounceCurl volume brush and use it to brush style your hair. See Manes By Mell on YT for technique.
Your hair might not need a lot of product. I have thick, wavy hair, but it’s fine in texture, and I find a light leave-in is good enough.
Yeah, I tried using my moms fancy hair product, but it didn't really do much. All I really use now every day is curl cream because I don't want to waste all that product just to be washed out the same day
Are your hair strands fine? They look fine to me in the photos. If so, curl creams are generally too heavy for fine hair. Gel and/or Mousse
Do you apply products to your roots? I wonder if that’s why it’s causing it to be oily
Nah, I always apply it at the ends. I never really apply any product near my forehead or my scalp unless it's shampoo
Have you check out YouTube for curly girl techniques? That was a game for me
I've tried short videos, mostly on what products to use, but not as much on how to use them😬
I'll do my research on different products and techniques!
Hello! We have a similar hair texture and curl pattern. Here are my initial recommendations:
Omit brushing. Feel free to use a pick (yes, like an afro pick) to 'fluff' up your hair at the roots, but regular brushes will almost always result in frizz, for us.
Instead of towel-drying, use a t-shirt to geeeeennntly squeeze excess water from your hair.
Use a spray bottle to wet your hair when you need a refresh
For product, apply a curl creme or flax gel.
I allow my hair to air dry when possible. But otherwise I use a diffuser attachment on low to blow dry.
Message me if I can help answer any questions for you!
Alright, i'll give it a try! :D. i defo do need volume in my hair because i have heart-round like face shape.
Awesome. Good luck! If you're able to drop a few dollars to get started, the Aveda BeCurly product line has been my holy grail! If you can get only one item, the BeCurly Curl Enhancer is a life changer!
Routine: wet my hair, apply conditioner and then brush my hair with conditioner wet. I try to wash out the conditioner and dry it with a towel
deevacurl hair system periodt!
I have curly hair and I don't really have a routine for them. I just wash my hair with shampoo and use a conditioner. I oil it sometimes with castor oil since I've seen that works best for me. Being a full-time student, I spend around 12 hours in my university and I cover my hair. I have mid- back long hair(when they're dried) and they curl up after I wash them. I usually just put them up in a low bun and wear a head-cap and a georgette hijab. I come home around 8 PM-ish and when I open my hair, it looks very wavy and not curly. What should I do to maintain my curls because then my hair starts to look frizzy 2 days after shower. idk if this helps but I live in Pakistan and I can't use branded products because I'm broke😭
Alright so, first of all, cut the buns. Especially if you're keeping it for 12 hours a day. Bun hairstyles, especially when tight or worn frequently, can cause hair breakage, tension on the scalp, and potentially even hair loss due to traction alopecia. They can also contribute to frizz and damage the hair shaft.
Try loose braids or ponytails. And then tuck it into your hijab or underscarf or whatever. Make sure to get trims for dead ends or split ends since long hair is prone to damage. Also, sleep with a silk or satin bonnet. And get a silk or satin underscarf, there are affordable options for underscarfs on veiled. Bonnets you can get anywhere just make sure they are actually silk/satin and not a ripoff.
Don't oil your hair way to much, once before a shower day is fine. There are a lot of affordable hair products out there ranging only from 8-12 dollars. If you cant get any, a good shampoo and conditioner is fine. Make sure to not rinse out all the conditioner in the shower. Leave some in particularly if your hair is dry.
I'm assuming it's quite humid in Pakistan. That is probably why your curls are so frizzy, humidity affects them a TON. To help this consider using anti-humidity styling products, applying hair oil, and ensuring your hair is fully dry before going outside. Also wash your hair with cooler water.
r/curlyhair is full of tips!
the thing is I have kinda thick hair and I can't just braid them when I do my hijab because then they stick out. I'll try to see if I can do something with my braid What products do you recommend? there's this local brand for curly hair (coco curls) and they have a lot of things like shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner etc.
I saw the website for coco curls, and it looks good if you'd like to try it. I usually use sheamoisture for my hair (2c, waves with some curls in it) and it works really well for me. I use the mousse, gel and then i use curl talk shampoo and conditioner for my hair. The coco curl shampoo, conditioner, leave-in condtioner and gel would be good for your hair.
You should read up on the products and how to use them, and experiement with different ones. Some products aren't good for your hair, even if they claim they have "no harmful products" and can make your hair fall out.
That was my experience with the curl talk mousse and gel, which is why i decided to make a switch to sheamoisture.
Before you braid your hair, make sure you detangle it, and make sure its moisturized enough with maybe leave-in conditioner or something.
To maintain them, make sure to not touch to often, moisturize, and sleep with a silk bonnet or pillowcase. You can also additionally research on this.
Good luck with it, sis. Inshallah it goes well :)
Oil your hair once a week, i recommend trying rosemary oil as well if you haven’t already
Put your hair in 2 braids or 4
Use a satin undercap under your hijab
Wear a satin scarf or a bonnet at night and homemade hair masks are good to do regularly
you definitely should make use out of silk or satin head covers and pillow cases
I don’t wear hijab but I have curly hair. I recommend using sulphate free shampoo and silicone free conditioners. Also after washing your hair, u can apply leave in conditioner or curl cream to keep the curls hydrated. Before wearing hijab, u can very lightly tie your hair into a bun. If you pull too hard, the tension will cause your curls to fall flat. Also curly hair should not be washed daily but rather 2-3 days a week
I’m so done every time i wash my hair. The curls are intact and i scrunch them after combing when they’re damp. But once they start to dry they get super frizzy and especially the strands that are exposed to the outside. When i get ready somewhere i think i look good with my curls cause they are damp, only for them to end up being a total fail an hour or two in. And post that??? it’s a mess the next day when i wake up. How do i deal with this 😭 HELP A GIRL OUT!!!
Fix my curls cream and gel is very affordable and works great, get a curly hair diffuser attachment for drying ur hair if you don't have one.
you need a gel! if it's in budget then get fix my curls flaxseed gel, it's really good, all you have to do is make sure your hair is a little wet, like dripping a little water kind of wet, then you brush it, with a wide tooth comb, take the gel and gently apply to smooth out your hair clumps and then gently scrunch.
Let it air dry completely and then lightly scrunch again so the hair is not crunchy anymore, this would really help!! and if you wanna go a step further, you can add a curl cream right before using the gel, but it's not necessary!
hopefully this helps you!!
Edit- if you need any more recommendations or have any questions, you can dm me!
I’ve always used keo karpin hair oil & I apply it on wet hair. I’ve been using this for almost 30 years. My dad used to do this when small, so this works perfectly fine. Gel and creams gives me dandruff
Gel !!
Invest in a good curl cream - Apply it post your shower on wet hair and then whenever you want to go out, wet your hair a little and apply a curly hair serum. I use movie beauty and fix my curls.
I see some people online go multiple days without washing and the curls remain defined, for me my hair is frizzy most the time except the day i choose to detangle, even then when i do that the curls don't last until the next day.
I don't have a specific routine, i shampoo twice a month, i detangle once or twice a week while showering and using whatever gel or cream i have on hand, i also tie my hair while i sleep so it doesn't get flattened.
I don’t. I have type mostly 2c. I have just gotten used to day 1 is curly. Day 2 is less curly, day 3 is wavy. Day 4 is less wavy more frizzy and probably up in a comb/hat/ponytail. Then time to wash again. It just seems to be the way it is but wavy looks nice too. I just don’t have the time or energy to make it look great all the time.
spray bottle!!! mine has mineral water and a few drops of serum added to it, i spray it 1-2 times daily on non wash days. i follow that up with either the same serum (praying hands method) or a branded setting spray
Yeah.. my curls are not "preserved" from day to day, they're "regenerated". I wake up frizzy and partly straight, and then use a spray bottle to remind my curls that they're supposed ti be curls.
imho any time I see a video of someone showing off their perfect day 5/6/7 hair I kinda assume by default that they’re stretching the truth a bit. I remember watching a product review by a YouTuber with hair similar to my own saying she only washed her hair once a week and I was like “huh?” and then in the same sentence she said she “cowashed or low poo’d on the days in between” 🙄 if you look online at a lot of people’s refresh routines they can get pretty extensive and not really much less effort than just washing and restyling your hair.
Yeah some people’s hair looks great a week after washing without doing anything special, but even in those cases it’s not necessarily gonna look like TikTok influencer hair or anything. Stuff like silk/satin pillowcases, sleep styles that minimize friction, keeping your hair off your face/neck when you’re sweating can help.
yeah I came to the same conclusion a while ago. I use a spray bottle to refresh occasionally if I don’t have time to do a whole cowash and restyle, but 99% of the time if I’m already in the shower I just wet my hair down and throw in some conditioner between shampoo washes. couple years ago I tried going full Curly Girl method but I was never very happy with the results and even with clarifying regularly I was just getting too much itchy product buildup on my scalp between washes and my hair was flat and weighed down. my mom has a slightly different curl pattern than me but a similar texture and she’s the one who taught me to wet and condition every time but only shampoo a couple times a week when I was a teenager and had never even heard the term “cowash” before, she’s never “refreshed” dry like that basically ever and her hair’s always been pretty long and very healthy even despite her highlighting it regularly for over 20 years lol so at a certain point I just decided I’m probably better off following her lead on that than desperately trying to make the advice I read on the internet work
Yeah, I'd agree with this. I don't refresh my hair between washes and I think it looks good all week, but there's still a big difference between day two hair and day six hair.
Mine used to be the same, I’m not sure that this will work for you, but I realized I was not applying enough gel (it would never form a cast). Since I started applying more, every tine I refresh with water, my curls are back with minimal frizz
To get my curls to last for 4-5 days, I:
- Shampoo every 4 days and clarify every other week at least
- Use minimal conditioning because my fine hair is easily overconditioned, so no deep conditioners, leave in or curl cream
- Use a strong hold gel or layer two together
- Wear a buff to sleep instead of a bonnet so that my curls are compacted on top of my head
Do you really not cleanse your scalp more than twice a month? I'd definitely start doing that more often to give your curls a good base to start from.
I add some leave-in conditioner into my spray bottle and shake it to mix. It helps a lot with taming the frizz, much more so than water!
Gel, and protective methods while sleeping.
My curls last the best part of a week. But, if I tie them up, I need to wash them the next day because otherwise they'll have a ton of knots and tangles. Have you tried using a buff or something else instead of tying your hair up at night?
Edit: when you say "gel or cream", does that mean that sometimes you're going without a conditioner? Because that would definitely lead to more frizz and knots. I would recommend: shampooing at least once a week (to clean your hair), using either regular conditioner or leave-in conditioner when you wash your hair (to moisturise it), and then using gel (to protect the curls until your next wash).
i haven't used conditioner in a long time i didn't know it's important, imma keep that in mind thank you, also i thought tying up the hair made less knots so i ,ight try one of them bonnets
Yep. I have a crispy day when I wash as I use lots of gel, then I wear a bonnet at night, and often throughout the day if I'm bobbing about at home.
how to maintain curly hair
Key Considerations for Maintaining Curly Hair:
Moisture is Key: Curly hair tends to be drier, so use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Look for products with ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, or glycerin.
Avoid Heat: Minimize the use of heat styling tools. If you must use them, apply a heat protectant and use the lowest heat setting.
Detangle Gently: Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle your hair when it's wet and conditioned to prevent breakage.
Regular Trims: Schedule regular trims (every 6-8 weeks) to remove split ends and maintain the shape of your curls.
Use the Right Products: Experiment with curl creams, gels, and leave-in conditioners to find what works best for your curl type. Look for products labeled as "curl-defining" or "frizz control."
Protect at Night: Use a silk or satin pillowcase or a hair wrap to reduce friction while you sleep, which can help prevent frizz and breakage.
Deep Conditioning: Incorporate a deep conditioning treatment into your routine once a week to replenish moisture and keep curls healthy.
Recommendation: Consider the "Curly Girl Method," which emphasizes using sulfate-free shampoos, avoiding silicones, and embracing your natural curl pattern. This method can help enhance your curls and reduce frizz over time.
