Several brands have been recommended across discussions for curly hair care. Ouidad is frequently mentioned, with users praising their bond-building shampoo and conditioner, climate control gel, and Mongongo oil [5:5]

[5:10]. Kinky Curly is another popular choice, especially their Knot Today leave-in conditioner and curling custard
[5:1]
[5:6]. Not Your Mother's Curl Talk line is appreciated for its gel and mousse

Essential Product Types
A basic curly hair routine often includes a combination of leave-in conditioner, curl cream, gel, and mousse. Leave-in conditioners like Kinky Curly Knot Today are praised for their versatility as detanglers, co-washes, and conditioners [5:3]. Curl creams and gels help define curls and reduce frizz, while mousse can add volume and hold
[2:2]
[3:5]. Deep conditioners or hair masks are essential for maintaining moisture and health in curly hair
[2:2].
Frizz Control
Managing frizz is a common concern for those with curly hair, especially in humid climates. Products like the Ouidad climate control gel and Aunt Jackie's elongating gel are recommended for their ability to maintain curl definition without excessive frizz [5:9]
[5:12]. Avoiding glycerin in leave-in products during humid weather can also help minimize frizz
[2:3].
Trial and Error
Finding the best products for curly hair often involves trial and error due to individual differences in hair type and preferences. Many users suggest experimenting with different products and routines to discover what works best for your specific hair needs [4:7]. Trying travel or trial-sized products from various lines can be a cost-effective way to test new options
[4:2].
Additional Recommendations
Beyond the discussions, consider looking into Curlsmith's purple line, which has received positive feedback for improving hair appearance [5:11]. For affordable options, Cake - The Curl Crush and John Frieda Frizz Ease Curl Mousse are available at drugstores and offer good results

i’m trying to buy new curl products and put more effort into doing my hair but i haven’t no idea what to buy. everywhere ive searched is saying the opposite things for the same products so im really confused. for reference this is everything ik about my hair: 3a curls, kind of thick, kind of dense but not extremely, quite dry and damaged. as for my hair priorities i want to be able to do it and not have to refresh it too often, also want to reduce frizz, make the hair softer and keep it fairly lightweight and bouncy rather than weighed down, im mostly looking for recommendations on leave in conditioners, curl cream and mouses or gels. also i have no idea what hair porosity i have. if anyone can help and recommend anything id be really grateful thanks so much x

I have 3b curls and I love the ouai curl cream, Davines curl building serum, and Davines OI oil. I would also suggest having a look at what you’re washing with, as this is just as important for maintenance and not needing to refresh too often. Davines Love Curl is my go to for shampoo and conditioner, and I use the curl treatment every other week too. If your hair is coloured, you might want to consider alternating treatments with olaplex to repair the bonds. All of this was recommended to me by my curl specialist hairdresser, hope it helps!!
Hi! So I am looking for products that would be good for my curly hair, but I do not know what to use! I am so lost on what to get, and so confused! I just want to have good looking hair, but it is always frizzy, all the time, especially in the summer, or when it humid out(and I live in Missouri, so it's like always humid here, lol.) . I was looking at the Devacurl products/line, but I have heard some not so good things about them, and that they have damaged people's hair. I am not sure who true all that is/how bad it was, but I don't want to risk it, especially since it's so pricey!

So, suggestions anyone?
I recommend getting leave in conditioner, a curl cream to help with hydration and give hold, a light weight gel to help with hold, and then an oil/serum to soften the cast you could get from the gel. The oil/serum would help with frizz! Also, be sure to use a deep conditioner/hair mask to bring moisture to your curls!
Gel helps me! Though there is definitely an acceptable level of frizz for me in the summer. I don't have the patience to try to be completely frizz free. Also, avoiding glycerin in leave in products is important in humid weather.
The side bar has a giant list of products; and if you dig through the sub you will find tons of suggestions. Look for someone who has hair similar to yours and look at their routine to start
My current routine that gave me this hair is Shu uemura ultimate reset shampoo and hair mask. Followed by redken acidic bonding contrate leave in conditioner and lush revive hair moisturiser then air dried and this is the ungodly result.
On days i heat style i use the same shampoo and conditioner then keratse genesis leave in spray, style them and then finish with the k18 oil. The heat styling routine has been well working for me compared to the curly one. I dont have a diffuser or hairdryer i just style with a dryer comb (Shark SmoothStyle Hot Brush & Smoothing Comb)
I know i should be using a gel and mouse for hold but there are so many products on the market and i am too overwhelmed and broke to make a decision. Need some advice.
I'm not too sure whether i have low or high porosity hair but i do know when i use heavy creams there's just a lot of product buildup and dryness.
I have curly hair, but I recommend that anyone who has curly hair never iron it because it damages the ends, they become horrible, they are damaged and it is much better to leave your hair natural than to have it all ugly, I have never ironed mine because I love my hair and I take great care of it and it is beautiful, my hair is light brown, but I recommend using a lot of cream, define it and then you will have it as beautiful as you want, but also give your hair time, like you give time to your nails.
I agree about heat styling, but i dont know why they are like this when i just got a cut few days ago and cut about 4 inches of hair because they were long to a short one.
Also do you have any suggestions for a cream? Would appreciate it. Because the one i use currently makes them weirdly dry.
I probably wouldn't need to do heat styling if i figure out a good curl routine because i do like my natural hair i just can't get them to look and feel right.
Luckily there are so many affordable curly hair products now that are suited for all hair types. For example a one in done mousse that also includes heat protection would be fine! And a diffuser helps massively when styling hair curly as it distributes the heat evenly adds volume also! You can get a universal one that attatches to any hairdryer.
I didn't know there were mousse that like that, that sounds great, I'll surely check it out. As for a hairdryer i just dont own one at the moment as i was heat styling more and chose to go for a brush styler. Maybe I'll get a decently priced one for now with the diffuser. Thanks!
John Frieda frizz ease curl mousse is a good one to start with! And they do an air dry mousse too! Really affordable 😊
Edit (spelling): kerastase*^ and mousse*^
Hi I’m looking for THE BEST curly hair products.
I have fine curly hair. Share your routine!!!
Looking mainly for a gel and a mousse! Also something to maintain frizziness.
I have fine curly hair that I only just recently stopped straightening and I went all in on Pattern Beauty products. I bought a bunch of travel/trial size products from different lines to see what worked best. I also had good results with Deva Curl, but I like the way Pattern stuff smells better.
I’ve heard great things about Pattern I think I’m going to try it!
I really love the Not Your Mother’s curly line! I use their gel and mousse every time I wash my hair, but I do agree with others that everyone’s hair is different and you’ll have to do some trial and error to find what works best for you!
I just got everything but the gel and curl cream. Is it worth it to snag those too?
I’d give what you have a try but those could work for you! I tried out the curl cream but it didn’t do it for me. The gel is really nice to have for some extra hold but I think the most important thing for my hair is the mousse.
Yes! The NYM products work great for me but I’ve gone through a lot of products and trial and error to figure out what works best for me consistently.
Ouuu they’re cheap I likeyyyy! Hahaha I currently use Miss Jessie’s smells soooo gooood
I have fine hair and love Kinky Curly products. But they’re too heavy for some people.
Hmmm I should try it never heard of this brand. They’re cheap which is great
I like Cake - The Curl Crush or Not Your Mothers - Curl Talk! Both keep my hair from being frizzy or stringy and can be bought at a drug store which is a win in my book. They’ll make it crunchy but you can scrunch that out even without oil
Inner sense volume mousse is incredible
Let’s all share our best hair care products.
Why are people going around downvoting comments - there's a bunch downvoted right now? If you don't like the product that's cool, but the question is what works for each person!
Mine are the As I Am co-wash, the Kinky Curly custard, and the Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair deep conditioner.
Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in. I’ve experimented with different gels and creams, but this leave in product has stayed consistent in my routine list
This is THE curly hair product. I use it as a detangler, cowash, conditioner, leave-in - depending on my hair’s mood. SUCH a versatile product.
I LOVE it. I use their curling custard also. I still can’t find a shampoo I like though.
Does the curling custard last you a while? I have yet to use it, but always heard rave reviews.
i’ve noticed a huge improvement in how my hair looks since i started using curl smith. i have almost their whole purple line. it’s expensive, but worth it. and i actually manage to find a lot of their products discounted at marshall’s and tj maxx so i don’t always have to pay full price.
I love them too. I have short curls so I don't mind buying the pricier stuff since it lasts me a while. Their blue line "weightless air dry cream" is amazing for me. It somehow dries my hair faster and locks in the waves/curls without being too perfect/coiled.
Recently fell in love with Ouidad!! Their leave in conditioner + climate control gel has been life changing. The Mongongo oil is unreal. Love their shampoos and deep conditioners too. I’m a convert for sure
I second the Ouidad bond building shampoo and conditioner. My 3b curls feel so healthy after using it.
I always use the climate control conditioner (with NYMN curl shampoo). I change up my gel and cream products, but when I want BAM curls I use the climate control gel on top of Aveda be curly curl enhancer.
Ouidad climate control gel is indeed life changing!
They also have a No Sweat Post Workout Mist that is fantastic for after workouts.
Aunt Jackie’s elongating gel is a holy grail for me as a curl enhancer. It doesn’t have enough hold for me so I layer LA Looks over it for easy 5 day curls.
Hello! I’ve(19f) been trying to test out different products for curly hair, and none have really worked out. I’m not sure exactly on how to style it or what’s the best form of drying; I usually let mine air dry and it ends up with it poofy and very frizzy.
I’ve used curlsmith and L’Oréal, as well as rizos curls, and rizo has worked the best but not getting that volume I always have after getting my hair done. I’ve been trying to figure out what hair type I have too, so hair typing would be welcome as well.
Any tips or recommendations are very welcome!!!
You’ve already gotten really great advice. I have your same hair type, 2c/3a. Have you figured out your porosity and if your strands are thin or thick. You obviously have dense hair. I have low porosity, thin strands and dense hair. If you end up having the same, I could share my routine with you! Let me know!
This is my day 2 hair. After 4 years of trial and error and lots of giving up I finally figured it out
I have low porosity, and slightly thick strands!!
Here is my routine in case it helps! I know it’s a lot but maybe take what you think will be good for you. My holy grails are the Ouidad Whipped Curls mousse and the verb ghost oil.
-I wash my hair with Ouidad Vitacurls shampoo and conditioner
-With my hair soaking wet after the shower, I flip my head upside down and comb it with a bounce curl comb to create clumps (you can use a regular wide tooth comb or theres a good dupe on Amazon).
-Then I scrunch in a leave in conditioner (currently Ouidad vitacurl), then spray with a heat protector (Moroccan oil), then a mousse for hold (Ouidad whipped curls).
-Then I gently plop with a microfiber towel until hair is damp and no longer soaking (15-20 mins)
-Then I diffuse on low heat low air flow until dry
-I do all this at night, so I then clip my hair into a big claw clip or a pineapple with a satin scrunchy and sleep on a satin pillow
-In the mornings, I mist my hair with a continuous mist bottle that has water and a few generous pumps of Cantu curl activator inside, to bring my curls back to life. I follow that with a bit of Ouidad Whipped Curls Mousse to boost hold and definition, scrunching it in gently. (You don’t have to do this step if you shower in the mornings)
-Once everything dries, I smooth a little Verb Ghost Oil over the ends and top layer to soften any crunch and add shine.
-I redo this morning routine every day after that. That usually gets me 3 more good hair days without having to fully rewash.
Sign up for curls monthly. They send a box with samples of all sorts of different products every month that you can try. That way you’re not paying full price for a full size bottle of something that ends up not working for your hair.
Also, just for reference, I had absolutely nothing to do with this subscription service. I think it’s a great idea and wish that it was around when I started my curly hair journey.
I’ll def look into it!! Thank you:)
Shampoo, conditioner, leave in/or curl cream and gel/mousse.
Coldish warm water. Satin pillow case. Cotton T-shirt or micro fiber hair wrap.
Shampoos/conditioners for light weight hair: Maui moisture, raw sugar, not your mothers, twist or Trader Joe’s tea tree Heavier more moisturizing brands: rizos curls, Mielle or Camille rose
Leave ins: kinky curly knot today (light) or Camille rose moisture milk (heavy)
Gels have never worked for me so that’ll be something you gotta figure out
Shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner and a little bit of gel. When you get out of the shower you want to section your hair left right and top. While your hair is soaked and sectioned, put the leave in conditioner in your hair and then a little bit of gel and you can rather brush it up and off of your scalp and brush it out. Then you can go in and do individual curls with a brush by brushing sections and giving them a little shaken finger coil or rake the product through and scrunch with your hands so your hair wet squishing noise and then take a cotton T-shirt and scrunch it again to remove excess moisture when your hair is set do not touch it. You can air dry, diffuse or plop it in a T-shirt.

Thank you so much!! I’ll definitely give this a try. I’ll look at some of the products as my hair does weigh down a lot and is very bottom heavy so I’ll check it out.
Oh so definitely the Maui moisture and kinky curly leave in and any mousse works
Hello! I would say u have 2C/3A. When it comes to rutines the most important thing is styling method not Products. No to say which products u use isnt important, but method is more. The best thing u can do is mix around w different styling rutines and methods untill i find one u love. If ur alsow stuggling w finding products u could take a look at "curls monthly":)
Go on on IG and follow @tootilab and @curlswithalexa Another helpful place is @vossthecurlboss. She is a curly stylist who will demonstrate how to style your hair.
Your routine needs to be shampoo, condition, apply gel in sections to wet hair from roots to tip, scrunch and diffuse. Don’t touch it while diffusing. That causes frizz. When it’s completely dry, it will be hard and crunchy. That’s the cast, and it’s a good thing. You break the cast by shaking it out with your fingers. @vossthecurlboss has great demos on how to break the cast.
You don’t need to know what hair type you have. Just follow that routine about two times a week. Never use a towel on your hair and always sleep with a satin bonnet at night. Good luck.
Thank you so much! I have had such a hard time with the diffuser and now I know why.
I hear every curl product is bad. i look up tresseme, aussie, cantu, shea moisture, and ogx are all bad. Whats a ACTUAL good shampoo, conditioner, and cream/smoothie/leave in for wavy hair/curls to keep in moisture, keep hair healthy, and give it that moisturized wet /gel look throughout the day.
Ouidad, innersense, briogeo. You need to invest in the good stuff. Worth every penny
I'm super new to having curly hair and actually caring for it. I have been using shea moisture shampoo and conditioner since the only products I use on myself smell like coconut.
Is it a good brand? Is there anything else I should be using? My hair seems super frizzy and undefined but I'm not exactly sure where to go from here in terms of hair. I've done research but it is all super overwhelming.
Any help with products would be massively appreciated, thank you in advance!
Finding out my hair porosity has been a game changer for me and finding what products might work best. Hair porosity impacts how your hair does or doesn’t absorb products which obviously plays a big role in what your curls are going to look like and frizz and whatnot
How would I find that out? I didn't even know hair porosity was a thing to be honest.
Totally fair, I literally only just realised I was doing aaaaaall the wrong things for my hair porosity! So I have low porosity hair, which means it takes forever to get wet, forEVER to dry, goes frizzy as heck, and I struggle with product build up. It’s coz my hair cuticles are so closely locked down that they don’t let any moisture or product in. Still working out what’s the best thing to do next when it comes to styling and refreshing but at least I’ve sorted my product build up problem. Baby steps all count as steps forward! ETA I just did a bunch of online hair quizzes about porosity lol it was an eye opening time
I don’t want to waste any money and would like to know which products work best for curly hair?
It really depends on your hair. A lot of people like Shea moisture but it can weigh down some hair types, like my hair is more wavy and my curls have way more bounce when I don't use heavier products that have lots of oils, butters, and protein. DevaCurl isn't great for me either. But I only figured that stuff out after lots of experimenting! Buy products from Ulta or Sally Beauty if you can, they have great return policies. Sometimes how you use a product matters too, like applying to dripping wet hair vs. wrung out. I have had good luck with Not Your Mother's Naturals and Curl Talk lines, they are mostly cg-approved and not as expensive as DevaCurl.
Thank you!

Key Considerations for Curly Hair Products:
Moisturizing Ingredients: Look for products with hydrating ingredients like glycerin, shea butter, coconut oil, and aloe vera to keep curls moisturized and reduce frizz.
Sulfate-Free Shampoo: Choose a sulfate-free shampoo to avoid stripping natural oils from your hair, which can lead to dryness and frizz.
Conditioner: A rich, creamy conditioner is essential for detangling and providing moisture. Consider a leave-in conditioner for added hydration.
Styling Products: Use curl creams, gels, or mousses specifically designed for curly hair to define curls and provide hold without weighing them down.
Avoid Heavy Silicones: Products with heavy silicones can build up on curly hair, leading to dullness. Opt for water-soluble silicones if you prefer to use them.
Recommended Products:
Shampoo: DevaCurl No-Poo Original - A sulfate-free cleanser that gently cleanses without stripping moisture.
Conditioner: SheaMoisture Curl & Shine Conditioner - Rich in coconut oil and hibiscus, it provides excellent moisture and detangling.
Leave-In Conditioner: Kinky-Curly Knot Today - A great leave-in that helps with detangling and adds moisture.
Curl Cream: Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Defrizzing Curl Cream - Helps define curls while controlling frizz.
Gel: Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel - Provides strong hold without flaking, perfect for defining curls.
Tip: Experiment with different products to find what works best for your specific curl type and texture, as curly hair can vary significantly from person to person.
