TL;DR Use the Curly Girl Method, avoid heavy products, and experiment with techniques like plopping and diffusing.
Curly Girl Method
The Curly Girl Method is a popular approach for enhancing natural curls. It involves using sulfate-free shampoos, co-washing (washing with conditioner), and applying gel to wet hair [1:1]. Scrunching your hair from tip to root and using moisturizing products can help define curls and reduce frizz
[1:1]. There are many resources available online, including articles and subreddits like r/curlygirl
[1:2].
Drying Techniques
How you dry your hair can significantly impact curl definition. Using a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt instead of a regular towel helps prevent frizz [2:1]. Plopping, which involves wrapping your hair in a fabric to enhance curl formation, is recommended over blow-drying
[2:3]. Diffusers can also be used to dry hair gently while maintaining curl shape
[4:2].
Product Application
Applying products correctly is crucial for enhancing curls. Curl creams, gels, and oils should be applied to wet hair to maximize their effect [3:2]
[4:1]. Scrunching hair after product application can help distribute it evenly and encourage curl formation
[4:2]. Some users recommend finishing with light oils like argan oil to add shine and reduce frizz
[4:6].
Avoiding Heavy Products
Heavy products can weigh down curls, making them less defined. It's important to use lightweight products that don't contain silicones, which can build up on hair [5:7]. Experimenting with different products and techniques can help find the best routine for your specific curl type
[5:1].
Community Resources
There are numerous online communities and resources dedicated to curly hair care. Subreddits like r/curlyhair and r/curlygirl offer advice and support for individuals looking to enhance their curls [1:3]
[4:5]. Additionally, platforms like Instagram and YouTube provide tutorials and styling tips for various curl types
[2:4].
I have naturally curly hair, to clarify I’m Caucasian, my curls start about an inch or two from my scalp and so the longer my hair gets the lower it appears that they start. I want to get more volume and a little more curl, not necessarily a tight perm though. Help? I’ve tried layering and thinning but it doesn’t get me the volume I want, I’ll try to post a picture, otherwise feel free to dm me (:
have you heard of the curly girl method?
Teach me the ways! Haha
it’s essentially a set of rules which lay out what you should and shouldn’t do with your hair in the transitionary phase between wavy/frizzy hair to (hopefully!) curly hair. here a couple of articles which you may find useful: https://curlycailin.ie/what-is-the-curly-girl-method/ https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/no-poo/the-curly-girl-method-for-coily-hair there’s also a subreddit specifically for this: r/curlygirl good luck!
Yes seriously this made such a big difference in my hair. Check out r/curlyhair they have tons of information. curlsbot.com is an ingredient checker you can use to see whether a product is/isnt curly girl approved. You can look at my before and after in my post history if you want to see the difference just a few weeks made!
Like the other commenters have said, the curly girl method can help enhance natural curls. I use sulphate-free ginger shampoo (body shop) once a week, and co-wash (washing scalp with conditioner) every third day or so. I use hair gel to enhance the curls (put it in while wet, don’t touch until dry, then scrunch to break the gel cast.) Use moisturising products (curl creams, hair masks, deep conditioners) and blot your hair dry with a micro fibre towel or t-shirt (this helps to avoid frizz). Scrunching from the tip to the root of the hair is great for enhancing waves.
These are just some basic principles of the curly girl method that work for me, but I’d definitely research it for to figure out what works best for you. Good luck!
I’m asking for help. Just the ends of my hair curl and I want to enhance them?
My hair is even less wavy than yours if I follow a similar routine. To start, get CG-friendly products (no silicone especially!), plop instead of blow drying, and stop brushing it (finger comb in the shower, then scrunch it after combing to restore the shape). Those three alone will do a world of good, and anything else you add to your routine is a bonus. Check the pinned post and community info for more guides.
Check out the pinned post, cruise the posts on this sub, and then I highly recommend checking out Instagram and YouTube for styling videos. For wavy hair, I recommend checking out @wavycurly on Instagram or she is Wavy Curly Ali on YouTube. Good luck!
I wash my hair once a week mostly brush it out and have it in a ponytail. I use natural hair products and don’t use heat products except hair dryer
Hello! I don’t know your products or exact styling methods. But there’s a few universals that go a long way for most curlies. You might have to play around with the method or styling or products but curly hair is a constantly updating routine, for better or worse.
One is getting a microfibre towel or using an old t shirt - never a towel - to dry the hair. Instead of rubbing, use the fabric to scrunch water from hair starting at the roots, and don’t be too aggressive. Having some water helps distribute product and really get it into all the hair!
The next would be not dry brushing, not ever - only comb hair in the shower to detangle/ getting ride of excess strands. I usually do it with conditioner.
When your hair is out of the shower and you’ve dried and applied product, gravity and water weight can really pull down curls - try “plopping” for a bit before you dry it. It’s a really good idea to invest in a diffuser attachment for the hair dryer, helps keep intense heat damage to a minimum and evenly distribute air flow.
Try some YouTube videos with people who have similar hair and try out their drying methods, nod everything works for everyone.
Going further I think it’d be good to figure out what your hair porosity and thickness is a good idea, it’ll help narrow down products that will work for you - there’s a few different tests online you can look up, I’ve used a few to come to a very rough estimate where my hair is.
As you change products don’t be afraid to switch it up! Sometimes my hair needs a good protein mask which I don’t do every time, but I alter my routine to accommodate it.
Hey, everyone! This is my natural hair, except some very light highlights. I let it dry out naturally until around 80%, then use heat protection and the Curly Jelly by Umberto Giannini. Is there any way I can get more defined curls? Thank you! <3
Use your gel on wet hair, straight out of the shower! That would help a lot I think
Thank you! I will try that!

I’m trying to work with my hairs natural waviness but honestly don’t know what I’m doing, considering curl cream and perhaps a diffuser after? Never used either of those so any tips welcome 🙏
Yeah I have a very similar waviness to my hair. When I want to have more curls I use curl cream and a diffuser.
With curl cream in I scrunch my hair quite thoroughly. Then I use a diffuser, and one of the methods I use is the scoop method https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ffa1UTS6Am8?feature=share
Then I finish with argan oil
Then I finish with argan oil
When you say finish? What do you mean? Do you mean to spray the new curls with this?
I put a few drops on my hands and massage it into my hair when its nearly dry
Legend 🙏 thank you
I use Ouia air dry foam, after you shower scrunch it into your hair while it’s still soaking wet. Don’t touch it for a few minutes then use the diffuser blow dryer. That usually helps them stay in place. Once it’s dry, don’t touch it again for a few minutes then mess it up/scrunch it out a little bit. Might help.
Thank you! 🙏
r/curlyhair. Go. More than half this sub needs to go there.
I use a curl cream on wet hair as well as sea salt spray. Scrunch hair up, don’t brush. Let air dry.
I think it’s better to ask the r/curlyhair page since this page is more so for type 4 hair
I think this is a good a space of type 3 hair as well. There’s a lot of multi racial 3c hair people who may not get advice on just a curly hair subreddit. Type 3 hair shares a lot of struggles with type 4 hair.
I have a mix of 3c & 4c...so I posted to both pages haha
I think you are mistaken. There is no 4c in your hair, just look up a photo of 4c hair on google. Now 3c..maybe. I would say you have more of a 3a pattern.
Are you putting oil in your hair to make it like this? I would suggest a good shampoo and condition to get the oil out and then mousse or gel to get your natural hair pattern back also Bantu knots
Nope, this is just what my hair looks like fresh out of the shower and wet. I do typically put a light oil in, some leave in conditioner, and a curl creme but my curls still aren't as defined as I'd like them to be even when I do all of that. I just bought some flexi-rods but I have absolutely no idea how to use them 😬
Seems like your hair is weighed down by product
check out r/curlyhair lots of advice there specifically for your hair type :)
Oh my god. Thank you. You are a god send. I will head over there too.
You're welcome! I love your curls, and with some more love I'm sure you will too!
I have the same problem. The devacurl gel works ok, but I’m still searching for something lighter.
I'm lousy at figuring out new routines, but r/curlyhair has taught me squish to condish and that's made a big difference for me. Also leaving a bit of conditioner in my hair without washing out. I always thought it would weigh it down/make it greasy but it doesn't! I love your hair, your curls are so ringlet-y and gorgeous. My good day would be how yours looks.
What's the squish to condition? Also do you use a specific type of conditioner. Currently i just condition the ends everyday but i dont use a conditioner meant for curly hair. Thats good to know too because i always think its going to do that to me too.
Awee thank you!
Your hair is gorgeous!!
Awe really? Thank you. Haha I find myself loving other people's curls more than my own so i appreciate it
Yes really! Rock those curls!
There’s a lot of different things you could try out. Use a curly cream or gel, diffuse.
I have very fine hair. I use a mousse, cream, and gel and diffuse on high heat but low pressure
If your hair responds to rain and moisture like that, have you ever tried doing a wet set with curlers? Many of the vintage styles would start with a wet set, dry overnight, then a brush out. It is a bit of work but I bet your hair would respond well to it.
I’ve tried doing heatless curls with the satin headband rod and noticed that those curls loosen over the day. I’ve realized that the only curls my hair holds are the ones created naturally, which is very weird…
Interesting. Loosening over time is to be expected, especially with long gorgeous hair like yours with some weight to it. I would bet that the headband rod, if it is what I am thinking of, would quickly loosen for your hair. It has large, vertical spirals, yes? That would be the hardest to hold. Gravity would pull hard on that.
If I were you, I would try rag rolling or larger pillow foam rollers. I would be curious to see how a horizontal set would fare, especially with a brush out to emphasize the waves. This video compares foam vs pillow rollers and shows a brush out.
I kept my fine hair long for years and it wouldn't hold a hot set curl to save my life. It liked wet setting though.
Yesterday after being in the rain I remembered how much I like the way my hair curls after being in the rain and I am wondering how I can achieve the same results after every wash. My hair is very fine and I usually only air dry and don’t use any product on it. Sometimes it dries more straight with a strange wave behind my neck and sometimes it dries more curly/wavy. One interesting thing to note is my hair does not hold any heat curls and flattens out within an hour no matter how much hairspray I use but it will hold curls after swimming/rain. I love how voluminous it looks when my natural curls are there. What would be the best product and technique for my type of hair to enhance the waves?
i’ve got wavy hair! i love brush styling it. i have a wetbrush that looks like a denman brush and it’s an absolute godsend. i can do that and have it last me at least 2 days. leave in conditioner, curl cream, and gel all help a ton and deep conditioning once a week!
Posting because I seem to have the opposite problem from the majority of people on the sub. My wash day usually leaves my curls pretty flat and frizzed, whereas my 3rd day refresh leaves my hair voluminous and curly. My hair also looks it’s very best post ocean water? Which is frustratingly simple, but for obvious reasons I shouldn’t be dipping my hair in the ocean daily to get my desired results.
This is a pic of my hair on the 3rd day. It’s definitely frizzy and not neatly defined - but it’s a lot less frizzy and more bouncy than wash day was! It’s much fuller and curlier than post initial drying.
Maybe I’m not using the right products? I’m honestly so burnt out on trying to sleuth out new things to use so I’ve settled. I have fairly fine hair (despite having a lot of it) and a range of less curly underneath to curlier on top. If anyone sees my hair and has suggestions on what I can do to get more consistent results on volume, and maybe a little more curl definition, I would be so so grateful.
Current routine:
-Shampoo (once every 3-4 days): Not Your Mother’s Hibiscus -Conditioner: Shea Moisture Curl & Shine -Curl Cream/Gel: NYM Curl Cream and then a layer of Curl Gel
Usually my refresh is just a little dry shampoo at the roots and I dampen my mid-to-ends and slick with diluted curl cream and scrunch.
I wonder if the curl cream and gel may be a bit too much on your hair on wash day. If your refresh day includes dry shampoo and it’s helping add volume and texture and absorb oils, this also makes me think that reducing product use or finding something a bit more light weight on wash day could be better. I have fine curls as well and have had good results with IGK best interest air dry styler and also Kevin Murphy Smooth Again. You can use as little or as much as you need and both products zap frizz and the K. Murphy provides hold depending on how much you use. I know you don’t want to keep trying products though. I could stock my own store with all of the products I have tried over the years 😆. Salt on the other hand also absorbs oils and adds volume as it coats the hair shaft. The nerd in me wonders if you couldn’t just make your own DIY spray bottle of a sea salt mixture with water to spritz in your hair as an experiment. 🤔
Thank you for taking the time to share all this info/insight!! I’ll def look into those products. Love the idea of a sea salt spray hahah, I wonder if I could mix a little bit of leave in conditioner with it to make it just a little less drying/damaging.
Do you scrunch and shake after drying to 100%? Cuz that's what works me.
Part of my problem could be reckless drying habits lol. My curls don’t always form neat clumps and sometimes I’ll diffuse, sometimes I’ll go about my day and end up tossing it around a bit before it’s dry. I haven’t found anything that holds and protects the curl shape through the whole drying process.
I have followed this lady's styling techniques and I've gotten the BEST results. Use the products you have and try getting this type of brush. I swear by it! And it doesn't take as long as it looks, you'll love it i promise. I think we tend to just dry however, but if you take the time to style and dry her way you'll see a big difference.
I always wash my hair the day before a big event bc day 2 is everything for me. Day 3 is pretty stellar too. I can make it to day 7 with nice, consistent curls that last.
If you are frizzy and dry, you need to work on your hydration. Google squish to condish videos. Sounds like you need a sealer with stronger hold. My fave is LA Looks gel. Provides 7 days of curls with ease
Best after an ocean dip is the best routine in my opinion! So I’m curious, what are the obvious reasons why you shouldn’t do that?
Daily salt water immersion is a life goal for me- best I manage these days is twice a week. Three plus times means vacation. I typically just plan wash day to line up with surf day.
You’re my fave lol. I love being in the water, I just know plenty of people have gripes with the salt drying out your hair and causing further potential damage. Although I’m not sure just how bad this damage is in comparison to if someone wanted to use heat on their hair or simply used a drying shampoo everyday.
Damage just makes it easier to style lol

[Progress Post] A few weeks into my curly hair journey – routine + budget-friendly products
Hi everyone! I wanted to share my early progress after just a few weeks of finally caring for my curls. I'm far from my hair goals, but I’m already seeing a difference and feeling really encouraged!
Hair Type: Likely 2C/3A – much curlier underneath, and starting to show more definition all around.
Routine:
Wash Schedule: Every 2–3 days (my normal routine)
Shampoo/Conditioner: Kirkland Signature Moisture Shampoo + Conditioner
Styling: I apply Paul Mitchell Soft Style Fast Form Cream to soaking wet hair right after the shower.
Technique: Scrunching a lot with a cotton t-shirt while wet. I air dry only—no diffuser.
Night Care: No bonnet yet, still using a regular pillowcase but planning to get a satin one soon.
Budget note: I don’t have the means to buy a lot of products, so I’m working with what I already had. Just today, I picked up Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Cream and SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Oil to experiment with layering and moisture.
This is my natural texture finally coming through after years of straightening and neglect. I included pictures to show the difference, including two from about 3 years ago when my hair was long but heat-damaged and straightened all the time.
I’d love any advice—especially tips for product layering, frizz control, and encouraging curl pattern on top layers!
Looks sooo shiny and healthy! Was also curious about the Paul Mitchell cream haha, we have similar hair and I love single stylers. I’m in a similar boat with budget - I try to not buy a ton of products and use up what I have or look for travel sizes or deals at tj maxx/marshalls.
What i feel has been making a big difference is playing around with more than scrunching. I was really struggling with even product application before and raking product through my hair in 2 to 3 sections before scrunching has really helped give me more definition and hair that really waves/curls up better. Rake, shake and scrunch technique also gives me good results. It also takes some trial and error to figure out how much potential your hair has to curl closer to the roots - I personally just deal with a little less definition there because getting product close to my scalp makes it itchy, but def look up root clipping and play around with finger coiling. You can also see if a small!! Amount of conditioner further up your lengths makes a difference, I think it does personally
It looks lovely!
The difference is very visible, it looks very beautiful

so genuine question here because I know i have wavy hair after it starts to dry but I want to bring the curls/waves out more. The first two pics are what happens after only getting it wet in the shower, didn’t wash or brush it. The last pic is what happens after I brush the waves out. How can I keep the curls without having to brush them out?
wet it the best you can, seriously, drenched and dripping water, and scrunch (just leave it to drie naturally and don't touch it while it's wet)
And this would be after washing it right? Would it be best to go through it with a comb while it’s dripping then letting it dry?
well, i would wash, brush and wet it again, then scrunch it. Don't brush and scrunch without putting more water in your hair, because brushing will kinda of squeeze liquid off your hair
Heatless waves, wrap it in a band over night, don’t even need to wet it, no products needed.
What kind of band?
This kind of thing. Your hair will look amazing since you’re already wavy. I use this and my curls last longer than heat styling and I don’t use any product. I use in dry hair.
how to enhance natural curls
Key Considerations for Enhancing Natural Curls
Hydration is Key: Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for curly hair. Look for products with ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, or glycerin.
Avoid Heat: Minimize the use of heat styling tools. Embrace air-drying or use a diffuser on a low heat setting to maintain curl integrity.
Use Curl Creams or Gels: Apply a curl-enhancing cream or gel to damp hair. These products help define curls and reduce frizz. Look for ones with hold without being crunchy.
Scrunching Technique: After applying products, scrunch your hair upwards to encourage curl formation. This helps to create volume and definition.
Plopping: Consider the "plopping" technique by using a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel to wrap your hair after applying products. This helps to absorb excess water while enhancing curl formation.
Regular Trims: Keep your curls healthy with regular trims to remove split ends and maintain shape.
Protect at Night: Use a silk or satin pillowcase or a hair wrap to reduce friction while sleeping, which can help prevent frizz and maintain curl definition.
Recommendation: Experiment with different products and techniques to find what works best for your specific curl type. Consider trying the "Curly Girl Method," which emphasizes using sulfate-free products and avoiding silicones, to enhance your natural curls effectively.
