TL;DR
Wide-Tooth Combs
Wide-tooth combs are frequently recommended for both wigs and extensions. They help in detangling without causing too much tension on the hair fibers, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of both synthetic and human hair wigs [1:3],
[5:1]. Seamless wide-tooth combs are particularly favored as they minimize snagging and breakage
[5:3]. Brands like Cricket offer "friction-free" lines that further reduce snagging
[5:7].
Metal Brushes with Rubber Tips
For those dealing with more tangled wigs, a metal brush with rubber tips can be effective. However, it is important to use them gently to avoid pulling hair from the cap [1:1]. These types of brushes can be particularly useful when dealing with stubborn tangles, but always hold the hair at the roots to prevent damage.
Specialized Brushes
Denman brushes are popular among wig users for their ability to style and maintain wigs effectively [2:2]. Additionally, bone combs made from buffalo bones are noted for their polished surface, which reduces friction and is gentler on hair fibers
[5:9]. Users have also mentioned the effectiveness of detangling brushes without the little ball on the end of the bristle for managing wigs
[5:8].
Additional Tips
When caring for wigs, especially synthetic ones, it's advisable not to brush them while wet. Instead, gently separate tangles using your fingers or a pick comb [1:1]. For synthetic wigs, using a silicone wig spray can aid in reducing frizz and making the hair easier to manage
[5:2]. For more detailed guidance on wig care, resources like Jaymes Mansfield's YouTube channel offer valuable tutorials and advice
[4:1].
I have two wigs one is synthetic and the other is human hair. I wanted to know the best type of brush to wash and detangle for both.
My wig is all frizzy no matter how much anti frizz I slather on. What do I do
Wide tooth comb. Start from the bottom then go to the top. I use baby Detangler in my human hair ones
A metal brush w/rubber tips, but with all brushes, make sure you are gentle to brush & detangle; hold the hair at the roots to avoid pulling the hair from the cap, if the wig is really tangled, also use a pick comb to gently separate & detangle small areas at a time. Never brush a wet wig, you can gently pick apart wet tangles, use a silicone wig spray as well for synthetic wigs. I also will gently separate hair in the water, especially human hair wigs, while it’s soaking in a bit of conditioner.
Could you use some guidance on what brushes/combs do what for wigs?
If so, check out this cartoon voiced video where I share some great brushes and spill the T on some busted ones!
Love a good Denman brush!
I have an edge brush like yours but it has like a spatula and on the other side instead of a comb- love it! Best application for glue makes it thin and even. I have this wide tooth comb, it’s made from bone and has no seams to catch on the hair; I got it quite a while ago at a place called tendrils and curls that doesn’t even exist anymore, but it’s the BEST THING EVER. I have yet to see it in stores again. (Pic attached)
And if you don’t have a rat tail comb what are you even doing?!
Ha! I have 3 rat tail combs - one in the basement, one in the wig supplies bag, and one in the upstairs bathroom 😂! Need more too! Never to hand when I need them! That spatula tip is hot!! That’s what to do with all these dumb ones they send with moisturizer! Thank you!!! That is a gorgeous wide tooth comb. When I lived in the UK I could get combs and brushes made of bone at markets, but I can’t find them back in the US. HOLD ONTO HER!! Good brushes last a lifetime but when you lose a good one, it’s like a bestie moving far away…
Hahaha, YES!
Yeah I mean, pretty much any brush/comb can be used. There are also plenty of other things you'll want as well, though.
All of them would work!
Id recommend something with metal prongs because plastic on plastic creates static in my experience
I love my comb like the one on the left for detangling my longer wigs.
Hello all! I am in need of help with wig care. I am slowly learning how to do it but am facing my big issue: Washing my wigs. All of my wigs are synthetics. I know I'm not supposed to use normal shampoos and conditioners but I have no other clue what to use besides wig shampoos/conditioners for synthetic wigs. How you do all do it? Do you recommend any specific brands for either quality and/or cost? What about how tos/guides? Are there any you would recommend?
Any help is appreciated,

Fabric softener. Gentle soak and agitate. Drip dry/pat the worst off.
Girl, go check out Jaymes Mansfield on YouTube. They have loads of videos about wig care, styling and advice for fixing up budget wigs to look like fancy ones.
Seamless wide tooth combs to start and I will graduate up to finer combs depending on the texture of the wig.
Hmm seems like wide tooth combs are the way to go. When is a finer comb usually needed for a wig? Thx btw
I like to use finer combs to work silicone spray through the ones that need it and also for straight synthetic wigs to help with keeping them moving more freely.
I use a detangling brush (brush without the little ball on the end of the bristle). Works well for me
Thanks! I was looking at those before but wasn’t sure if they were fine for wigs or not
Brushes tend to cause too much tension and, depending on the wig, can damage the fibers. It's recommended to use a wide toothed comb, preferably seamless, to maintain your wig.
Thank you for your answer! I had a wide tooth comb that I used (Ik most bristles on brushes damage the fibers) but I still feel like with the wide tooth comb I was snagging too much. Do you have a particular brand you use or recommend?
Cricket has been my go-to for years. They even have a "friction free" line that helps cut down on snagging. Wooden combs are another great option. With combs, you really get what you pay for. Dollar Store - or even cheap beauty store combs - will be the bane of your existence.
Ooh, one of my favorites is a bone comb from Amazon, they're made with buffalo bones that are a byproduct of the meat industry to reduce waste. They're generally easier on hair because the bone is polished and cuts down on friction by a lot!
Hi all! I just received my first wig (shoutout to some aggressive af alopecia). I decided to try the Extra Thin Hairline line from Hairalicious after seeing some mentions here.
I understand the limitations of non-remy hair, but I love the look of this wig even more than I was expecting, so I’m looking to extend the life of it as much as possible. So far all I’ve done is cut the lace, brush it out, and hot brush a small section that was bent from shipping.
Aside from wide tooth comb, what’s the best brush to keep it smooth and tangle free throughout the day? The wig definitely has plenty of shorter hairs and flyaways, which for now look natural but I can see becoming worse over time.
Would also love any other care tips for non-remy hair like this - I assume I’ll need a good silicone conditioner or styling product.
Thanks for all the wisdom here, I’ve learned so much lurking the past few weeks!
Wig link: https://www.hairalicious.com/p/blonde-wig-candice-swanepoel-16/ (my version is NOT full lace like this one, but they switched the style from lace top to “entirely handmade” after I purchased)
Try it on and post a pic please, very nice wig wow
I know I’m not helping but can you show us what the lace looks like and how it looks on your skin please? This wig looks gorgeous!
I definitely will! I’m not super confident putting it on so a friend is helping me later. I know I need to cut more around the ears but am having trouble doing it solo! I will say the lace/hairline is gorgeous across the forehead but might have to use some kind of bond for it to stay flat around my temples bc mine dip in a lot.
It sounds like you’re doing all the right things!! I’ve helped plenty of friends hands on. Good for you girl and I understand the confidence part- at least to my extent. It’s like wearing new sunglasses or a hat haha!
I'd love to read your feedback on this wig and Hairalicious? What is the lace and hairline like? Do you have any pics of it on?

What do and I’m by no means an expert is treat them like fabric.
I take a 5 gallon bucket and add a tsp or so of laundry detergent and then fill it 1/2 way with warm water. Then gently submerge the wig and very gently agitate.
Then I dump the bucket and give it a quick rinse in cool water.
Then I add a good splash of fabric softener and fill the bucket 1/2 way with water. Same thing. Dip and very gently agitate.
Then take it out, let it drip dry. You can comb the tips out with your fingers but don’t use a brush while they’re wet.
Let it air dry then comb out starting at the tips
I use Jon Renau shampoo and conditioner.
I consider my wigs to be an investment so I use products intended for wigs.
Big recommendation....Do Not Comb Until The Wig Is Dry.
Hi! I finally, finally, finally bought some wigs and they are on their way. It’s because of this group and one friend with cancer that I was able to make the leap.
I bought from CysterWigs and Lush. I’m really excited! Excited to have a good hair day for once. I was taking notes and researching the tools I need. Here’s my list. Please let me know if I should add, subtract, or wait on any of the tools. My wigs are coming soon and I want to be ready!
Anything else??
A wig brush
Wig detangling spray, optional steamer
I would love to see the advice that comes from this. I’m a newbie, too, and I haven’t started wearing my new wigs out just yet because I can’t figure out how to make them look real enough.
I purchased a set of scalp-toned concealer from the same company that sells Wiggrip. It was pricey but it’s thick and seems like it may stay better and look more realistic than standard concealer. Have yet to use it.
I have heard that washing synthetic wigs when you get them may help subdue the shine and remove coatings that are sometimes applied to the strands. So my shopping list includes shampoo and conditioner specifically for synthetics. I have also yet to try this and would be curious if anyone here can vouch for it.
I’ve heard the baby powder advice a lot, but isn’t talc a carcinogen? I don’t love the idea of having baby powder that close to my face…
You'll find out from trying different things what you do and don't like. Not all wigs need dry shampoo or baby powder (I don't like or use either).
For synthetic you really only need Dawn dishwashing detergent to wash it, and a silicone spray (Beyond the Zone Turn up the Heat is good) to protect/detangle.
I see that many people use dry shampoo to reduce shine, but of course baby powder is more economical. You might be able to find a dry shampoo travel size in drug stores or at a Dollar Tree and see which result you like better.
Also at Dollar Tree you can find thinning scissors on the pet care aisle. I've used them very successfully recently to feather the bangs on a wig.
Enjoy your new confidence! and remember that everyone is so wrapped up themself that they're hardly looking at you.
Tweezers for thinning the hairline out
Hi everyone hope you are all well and happy, I recently bought a couple of wigs and I was wondering what the best way to brush them, I heard you can get sprays that help lubricate too, but I myself am clueless. Id love to hear any tips or advice.👍
Leave in conditioner or wig spray helps with tangles. I second the tangle teezer brushes!
Another trick I recently discovered is using hair thinning scissors to strategically thin the hair in sections and create hairs of different lengths. Real hair is not all the same length (it breaks and grows at different points), so using the thinning shears not only helps to reduce tangles but also creates a more realistic look. Just 3-5 cuts along the length of the hair (after dividing it into several sections) and brushing out the cut ends did a lot for my new wig!

Here is the video explaining it
I’d say tangle teaser brush. Really helps if you get a wig head to put it on while you work with it, just a blob one. You can get some synthetic fibre leave in conditioners and also wash gently with fabric softener. If it is heat safe it likely needs heat to keep it nice so get some adjustable temp straighteners and run them over the ends to reduce frizz at lowest setting. If you want to try and style it know that heat makes it malleable and cooling makes it set so you have to hold the shape as it cools. If you over do the shaping you can then relax it a bit with the straighteners or a hair dryer.
When it comes to a wig conditioner, this is by far the best I've ever found. I learned of it through "wig sister" on YouTube.
It smells good. It goes on dry and you will immediately notice, wow, this stuff is awesome.
But, it's damn expensive!
Never comb a wig when it is wet.
Always wash in cold water. Rinse in cold water. It's okay to shake it a little bit when it's wet sometimes that will bring back the style. But do it gently.
Not all synthetic wigs are heat friendly. Always test first someplace that does not show! I have a curling iron that I use at 230 degrees.to put a style in most my synthetic wigs. Take your time. Be careful not to melt the fibers.
Don't comb it like regular hair. You must be very easy.
Don't use a blow dryer on a synthetic wig. Let it drip dry on your wig stand.
Hi everyone I’ll keep it short but, It dawned on me that I don’t think I’m using the best brushes for my hair
I would like advice or recommendations for two issues
-To detangle my knotty wavy hair before shampoo when it’s dry and after when it’s wet
-to distribute oil and sebum from my root to ends on third or fourth day of no wash, between my washes
Thanks :)
Edit: forgot to mention my hair is thick, strands themselves are very thick and lots of hair in general
Love my mason pearson brush. I have thick wavy hair and use their nylon/bristle combo one
Omg it’s expensive lmao! Are all good brushes that expensive? Why is it so much ?!????
Lol it is I was assured it'll last a literal lifetime though. I got the pocket size to save $$ and the small size hasn't bothered me at all :)
Oooo looking this up now! Thanks:)
I love my mason Pearson brush for dry hair, and my wet brush for wet hair :)
For detangling, I've heard good things about the Wet Brush. I haven't tried that myself, but have recently found a HeadJog to be good (I don't know how widely it's available though). I got it cheaply but I guess if it has to be imported elsewhere it would have a higher price tag.
For oil distribution, people usually recommend a Boar Bristle brush. Wood night be reasonably good as well, but with bristles further apart may do less of the job. I can't give any personal recommendations but then my hair is finer than yours by the sounds of it anyway. I can't remember whether BBBs are more or less likely to work well for hair with coarser strands.
Best hair brushes for wigs and extensions
Key Considerations for Hair Brushes for Wigs and Extensions
Type of Hair: Determine if your wig or extensions are synthetic or human hair. Different materials may require different types of brushes.
Brush Material: Look for brushes with soft bristles (like nylon or boar bristle) to avoid damaging the hair. Wide-tooth combs are also great for detangling without causing breakage.
Design: Opt for brushes designed specifically for wigs and extensions, such as paddle brushes or vent brushes, which can help distribute product evenly and minimize tangling.
Heat Resistance: If you plan to style your wig or extensions with heat, ensure the brush is heat-resistant to prevent melting or damage.
Ease of Cleaning: Choose brushes that are easy to clean, as wigs and extensions can accumulate product buildup.
Recommendations:
Wig Brush: The Wig & Weave Brush by The Hair Shop is designed specifically for wigs and extensions, featuring flexible bristles that detangle without pulling.
Paddle Brush: The Denman Paddle Brush is excellent for smoothing and styling, suitable for both synthetic and human hair.
Wide-Tooth Comb: A wide-tooth comb is essential for detangling wet wigs or extensions without causing damage.
Heat-Resistant Brush: The Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Brush is heat-resistant and great for styling human hair extensions.
Using the right brush will help maintain the quality and longevity of your wigs and extensions, ensuring they look their best!
