What Redditors are SayingTL;DR Opt for clean, professional styles such as buns, French twists, or defined curls. Consider the formality of the job and your personal comfort.
Professional Updos
For those with long hair, updos like buns or French twists are recommended for a polished look. These styles help keep hair tidy and prevent fiddling during interviews [1:1]. A specific suggestion includes using bun sticks for a French twist to distribute weight comfortably
[1:2].
Haircuts and Styling Products
If your hair tends to fall naturally or is difficult to manage, consider getting a trim to shape it up [2:4]. Using products like mousse and hairspray can help maintain a neat appearance by keeping hair in place
[2:3]. Wetting down and combing hair back or to the side can also be effective for a formal setting
[2:3].
Defined Curls and Natural Styles
For curly hair, defined curls can convey a mature and professional image [4:1]. Pulling curls into a bun or puff can be an easy way to transition from a humid day to a more professional look
[4:3]. Adding accessories like scarves or clips can enhance the style while adhering to dress codes
[4:6].
Consideration of Job Type
The choice of hairstyle may depend on the type of job you are applying for. For very formal positions, a simple part with a matching hair clip can be appropriate [2:1]. It's important to ensure that the hairstyle aligns with the company's culture and expectations.
Personal Comfort and Confidence
Ultimately, choose a hairstyle that makes you feel confident and comfortable. This will help you focus on the interview itself rather than worrying about your appearance. If you're unsure, consider experimenting with different styles ahead of time to find what suits you best.
POST SUMMARY • [1]Hello my magnificent maned friends! I (28f) have a couple of job interviews coming up and I have a tendency to fiddle with my hair when I am nervous.
So does anyone have any good ideas for a professional looking updo?
My hair is quite thick, slightly wavy and a smidge past waist length
For a simple yet elegant French twist, do the third style in this video with these bun sticks. The video shows it with a single stick, but I suggest crossing it with a second one afterward to more comfortably distribute the weight.
I feel like you can never go wrong with a bun or French twist
Why did you brush everything to the front?? Just brush it away from your face
Unfortunately, my hair just falls that way. I shaved my head last year, and I'm growing my hair out since then. I've only been to the hairdressers once
Ahh I see. Well you def need a trim to reshape it even if you want it to grow.
You need to trim it to shape it up, but I’d wet it down and comb it either back or to the side and use mousse with a good hold plus some hairspray. Your hairs gonna wanna do its own thing when it’s dry so I’d recommend these steps
Hair cut!!
Depends on the kind of job. If its very formal, part it and wear a small hair clip that matches your hair colour.
Recent board passer here, and first time kong aattend sa isang face to face interview. Should I tie my hair or should I let it down? Thank you so much po!

First slide 2nd pic.
Towards the end of the week you can pull it back into a puff/bun with pieces in the front or slicked back. I also used to do two flat twists with a bun.
Pls note they may try to touch your hair.
Oh, Thats a great idea! I haven’t really tried styling it outside of using perm-rods (which is the second picture.) Wait, do you mean the customers will try touching my hair?? Have you had co-workers or employers who have done this??😧
Customers for sure. Coworkers would ask but I’d say no cause they’ll mess it up. And they’re usually cool about it.
And yeah you can have fun with it. Depending on the dress code you can add scarves too! And hair clips. So much!
Second photo is everything. On humid days, you can easily pull those cute twists up into a bun, untwist the ends and make a full and professional bun or keep the ends twisted for a better twist out the next day and add a bun clip and just do some cute, unexaggerated edges.
Thank you so much! I’ve never really tried styling it outside of permrods, twistouts, and twists, so this is very helpful! 🤗
I think the defined curls in the second photo look great! I also like the first photo with the side part but I would go with the second photo style. The third photo makes you look younger in my opinion, which may not be what you want for a job interview.
Phew, thank you so much! Im trying to go for a more mature look, so I’ll be considered more seriously. 😅😅 thank you!~
You have gorgeous hair 😍 I agree with the 2nd one 🫶🏾
Aww, thank you!~ 🥰❤️
I have wavey Asian hair very hard to style it to look professional, I have an interview coming up. Need advice on hair products or hair styles to look professional for the interview. Thank you. ( never used any products before)
It would great if you could post a picture of what sort of hair you have. What kind of professional job do you have. How old you are? All those things are important in helping
I have a job interview tomorrow , admin/office work, I’m familiar w the company and not too worried abt discrimination. I thought this headband wig looked really nice. My mother thinks it’s unprofessional and too casual, siblings are “okay” with it but now I’m questioning it.
Does this hair scream unprofessional or like I’m on the way to the gym? Would you wear a headband wig or something similar to an interview? Trying to solidify my look for tomorrow so I can feel confident and have a killer interview. I’d appreciate any and all feedback. TIA!!
It’s too casual for an interview bc of the headband
i think the edges make you look “young,” if you want to appear more “mature” then i say just do your edges less “artsy” brush them straight back or only do the top two corners (like how people do their lace front wigs)
but it all depends on the job you’re interviewing for!!! like if you’re going to work somewhere where creativity is encouraged or a minimum wage job then it doesn’t matter.
Thank you! I agree on the edges, I def wouldn’t wear them like that at the interview, that’s just how I had them that day ❤️
I disagree on the edges, there’s no problem with being a little expressive/artsy. It looks nice and might even draw good attention from the interviewer and a compliment. A woman would for sure think it’s lovely and as a man I’d say something nice too
I’m biased though because I don’t like how jobs (corporate in particular) can try to mute you as an individual
Ofc good luck with your interview!
I think the headband gives a more casual look. I would clip the hair back instead!
yeah the headband looks too sporty i think
When I wear headband wigs I like to wrap my own silk/satin bandana to change it up! An elegant scarf can really elevate this and make it more professional and versatile
It depends on do they look like you and the “representation” they have when you step in the office. Hope you get da job and where going after to celebrate ?
Depends on the demographic of HR
This part, at my workplace she’d be fine, but I’m sure at others not so much
Finally! We actually see the woman’s hair and not her boobs! 🤣🤣🤣
Hello ladies! I need some insight on how I should approach this. I am getting back into the work field after being on hiatus for a couple of years. Before that I was in the military for several years. Recently I have embraced my natural hair more and have been wearing it out. I really love my hair and how I look with my natural hair but I do understand the reality I live in and I don't want to sabotage my chances of getting a job due to my hair.
To make it clear I LOVE my hair but if it will hinder me from getting a job I'd like to know before I fully commit to job interviews. If it's not recommended I'd really appreciate some suggestions on what kind of hair styles are good starting point. I have a few pics of of my hair on my profile if anyone wants to have an idea of what my hair looks like.
Chances are I'll just wear whatever gets me the job and once I'm in I'll toss the wig/extensions.
Any helpful feedback is much appreciated!
Aa long as it's nicely coiffeured you'll be fine natural
I've been doing job interviews with two-strand twists pulled into a bun for the past 15 years. You could probably do a nice sleek bun and be fine.
The only caution I would have is about wearing it out (as fucked up as it is).
I go natural because I know I'll be wearing it natural at work, soo they might as well know from the jump. I'm not working anywhere that won't let me or would be passive aggressive about it. Keep in mind every interview that I've ever had, I've recieved a job offer.
Some corporate people actually really love it, one lady wouldn't stop complimenting my bantu knots lmao 🤣 she genuinely reacted in amazement and wonder. Don't let me bring out the headscarf styles lol they lose it.
I think it depends on the job but it is a lot more common to see natural black women in corporate america so I dont think it's going to be a big deal for most employers
Be you. Rock your natural hair.
Be so outstanding in your interviews that the hair isn't even a thought - the way it SHOULD be anyway.
Tie it up? Wear it down? What is the best way in your opinion?
Depends on the job
It’ll be easier if you’re white
Dress up for it- suit and tie for anything in an office. Polo and good jeans for customer service
Make sure the hair is clean. No pony tail, for sure
Not an employer, but you probably don't need to worry too much about it unless you're applying to work around rotating equipment. . . That said, maybe having a well-kept beard can help demonstrate professionalism and cleanliness if you're able to grow a good one.
just make sure whatever style it is, it’s clean and neat. make sure your clothes fit right, and they’re clean and wrinkle free. i would try to dress slightly nicer than you think you need to.
I say tie it up/ pull it back in a neat slick ponytail.
Not an employer either but I'd say: just keep it tied back in either a bun or a ponytail. That's what I did and that's what I do every single day; it has never been an issue.
To be fair though, my office is casual. Collared shirts for guys (dress shirt or polo) but untucked.
I don't get it all my friends work and I just feel so stuck I've probably done more than 20 ish interviews but for some reason almost everyone I know works its so bizarre ive been told my resume is really nice. But I feel like I appear extremely unhygienic to people because I have naturally very wavy hair which appears messy as well as really bad acne that has really taken a downplay on my confidence for fucking years and has really brought out the worst of depression. I just feel so stuck I feel so undesirable and unhygienic because even when using concealer to conceal my acne I still look horrifying at times. Any tips or advice? My parents seem pissed with me because they think im lazy but really I just need money and im broke and id do anything to get a first job.
The acne is the problem, it makes you feel like shit having it and it comes across in the interviews and hiring managers prefer attractive candidates. I used to have really bad acne and scars all over my face when I was in middle school and high school. When my acne cleared at the end of high school and i took a weightlifting class, all of a sudden these girls started becoming interested in me and would give me hugs and stuff and hanging out with me after school.
You should pop as many pimples as possible and then wet a towel with something that contains alcohol and rub it on all the popped pimples. All of them should go away in a week. I had Proactiv and they had 3 bottles of stuff, I only needed the 2nd bottle with the alcohol. (I used the 1st and 3rd creams but the 3 steps didn't fix the acne.) You also need to change your pillowcases at least once every 2 weeks. If that doesnt work and you get really deep pimples, you have to go on Accutane.
What kind of work are your friends doing? Any chance they could refer you for the next opening in their workplace?
How many interviews you had? Or how did they go? Think I can help, and no it’s not your appearance as long as you come in well dressed it’s fine just not a zombie basically
You look like the artist of thrift shop.
Most definitely …. #3 as a general manager of a company, that’s my opinion.
3 and 4!
I like 4 or current best
I'm thinking you look great in all the pics! Definitely good foot in the door looks!
