TL;DR Opt for a natural and polished look with subtle makeup that enhances your features without overpowering them. Keep it simple and professional.
Natural and Subtle Makeup
For a job interview, the consensus is to aim for a natural and subtle makeup look. This typically includes a light foundation or concealer to even out skin tone, mascara to define the eyes, and a neutral lip color [1:1]
[2:1]. Avoid heavy eyeliner or bold colors, as these can be distracting
[3:3]. Instead, opt for a thin line of eyeliner if necessary and use clear gloss or a tinted balm for lips
[1:3].
Enhancing Features
Focus on enhancing your natural features rather than transforming your look entirely. A touch of blush can add a healthy glow to your cheeks, and using a lipstick as blush is a creative option if you don't own one [1:5]. Applying a non-shimmery highlighter to the brow bone and inner corners of the eyes can make you appear more awake
[2:1].
Professionalism and First Impressions
Your makeup should complement your overall appearance and convey professionalism. Consider how you plan to present yourself daily at work and ensure your interview makeup aligns with that image [1:2]. For positions in cosmetics or fashion, looking polished and put-together is crucial, but avoid overdoing it
[5:1]
[5:3].
Consideration of Workplace Culture
The workplace culture and the nature of the job can influence your makeup choices. For example, if interviewing for a position in an elegant clothing store, opting for a matte eyeshadow and defined lip shade may be appropriate [4:1]. If possible, observe what current employees wear and dress one step above while matching the brand's energy
[4:4].
Confidence and Presentation
Ultimately, confidence and presentation matter significantly in interviews. While makeup is part of your appearance, your ability to express confidence and willingness to learn is equally important [4:6]. Ensure your makeup complements your outfit and demeanor, allowing you to focus on showcasing your skills and personality during the interview.
I’ve just applied for my first job, and I usually wear alternative/goth styled makeup, with big dark eyeliner, eyebrows and lip liner. Obviously, I shouldn’t go for that this time round, so what can I do to make me look hireable?
I own:
Pale, buildable foundation, can be sheer
Pale concealer
Mascara
Some eyeshadow in dark colours and some light colours, no nude shades I fear :/
Pencil and liquid eyeliner
Clear lip gloss
Red/pink lipstick, can be sheer
I own no contour, bronzer or blush.
Any tips or advice you can give will be greatly appreciated :))
It’s usually a good idea to go into the job interview the way you plan on looking every day. I had an unplanned interview one day and had the full works of eye makeup on for a girls day. That’s certainly not my usual if I’m waking up early for work. Sleep is important, haha! They still talk about how beautiful my eyeshadow was that day… so people will remember their first impressions!
2 coats of mascara. A very thin line of eyeliner using a wet liner, if you must. No liner is usually better.
A tinted balm is great as a lipstick. Or you can get Nyx whipped caviar liner and DM me oil slick. They are a purply neutral color that probably goes with your black hair.
Lipstick should be on the neutral side, either like a beigey pink or beigy purple like the one mentioned. Not hot pink or brick red. Nothing too loud.
If you have body jewelry, face piercings, tongue, lip, eyebrow, septum; remove them. 1-2 piercings in ears is okay, more than that, doesn't look professional.
Any fac, neck or any other visible tatoos cover with makeup. There's really great makeup for people with tatoos and vitilago. A few options these days.
I would go for a pretty natural look with a slightly pink lip
Great tips from everyone! If you want to put some blush you can try using one of your lipsticks. Just putting some on your fingertips and patting it lightly onto your cheeks.
Great idea! I’ll try it out before the actual interview, if I get one :’)
keep it base light, brows soft, tiny wing if you must, light shadow if you got it, clear gloss or tinted red for lips. We want “hire me”, not “I bite” you got this :)) just keep it simple, is better like that
This is the best answer OP
Hello!
So tomorrow I have a job interview for a company that sells primarily accessories and jewelry for young women and girls, you can probably tell what it is. I want to make a good first impression and I'd like tips and/or opinions on what I should do for my makeup. Should I be extra? Should I do what I usually do on a daily basis? Somewhere in the middle?

Thanks in advance!
Use a color corrector and a good foundation like MAC. Also, make sure your color corrector and foundation match (liquid and liquid or powder and powder). Use a light blush, light eyeliner, use a decent mascara, and a long lasting lip color that is neutral. Fill in those brows. Apply a non-shimmery highlighter to your brow bone and inner corners of your eyes to make you look more awake. I recommend using a good perfume too like something from Estee Lauder. Basically, you should go for a clean, but refined look.
As many of us know all too well, makeup wearers often struggle to toe the delicate line of others' perceptions, i.e.: no makeup "you look like a slob" and obvious makeup "you must be a bimbo".
When it comes to job interviews, situations in which you will necessarily be judged on how you present and comport yourself, how do you all tend to do your makeup? Do you find winged eyeliner to be "too much"? Red lipstick? Have any of you shifted careers/fields and noticed a difference in how you present yourself in interviews?
My interview makeup is a full face with a nude lip and a neutral but heavy eye. So for me that’s foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush, highlight, brown shadow with gold shimmer on the lid and an inner corner highlight, mascara, colored brow gel. If I have time to redo it if i fuck it up, I will do some kind of liner too. I do not wear winged liner or anything with liquid eyeliner because...I can’t do it. If I could, I totally would.
I have a face full of piercings and I am not willing to take them out for a job, so that’s already going to weed out people who are absolutely determined to control a woman’s appearance. I keep bright colors out of my interview attire simply because I want to avoid the perception that I am “high maintenance”. They already can tell I don’t give a fuck what they think about my appearance but I still want them to think I’ll work 50 hour weeks. I find no matter what you say, most men who are hiring in my field think colorful eyeshadow takes 3 hours and muted shadow takes 5 minutes.
I've actually made huge mistakes with doing too much makeup for interviews in the past lol. I'm not sure why I did so much, I think I felt like I had to be as attractive as possible which makes 0 sense in the workforce but I know that pretty priviledge is a thing so I guess my priorities were just messed up. I've definitely done the full face, neutral smokey eye with some shimmer and a big wing (I know!!) And I failed the interview I went to completely. For other reasons too but I remember the woman just staring at my face hard af which led to me not being able to hold eye contact and staring/talking at the floor. I know!!
So two weeks ago I had an interview for an office position and I dialed everything back completely. I did med coverage, extremely light blush, no eye makeup except for concealer on my lids and a very short pair of lashes because my glasses shrink my eyes completely. Then I stared into that womans soul. And..I got it. And I didnt feel especially beautiful but I felt smart and capable and adult. I actually had 2 interviews that day and got offers from both. Smart and capable ftw!!!
So you recommend stealing their soul to get hired? Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong in my interviews... Hmm lol.
This was my interview makeup on Thursday.
I was interviewing for Quality Inspection position at a production company that does electrical and computer parts. But mainly in data entry position.
I already know off hand that it's mainly men dominated working area so I toned down my makeup. I wanted to look neat and presentable and not have my makeup stand out.
I passed the interview and got hired right away. So I am still over the moon and estatic. I like working with numbers and computers more than dealing with customer service type jobs so this is perfect for me.
Edit: I should also confessed that I've been looking for a job since around 2016 because I quit my old job in 2012 to start our family and become a stay at home mom. So it has been a really long and hard road to try and get back into the work force.
Congrats on getting the job!
Congrats!!
Congratulations!
I keep it pretty basic - a natural finish foundation, brows, mascara, a little blush (i'm fair-neutral, so i stick with a light peach for a little flush), and a neutral-pink liquid lip that's "my lip but better". Maybe a pinch of highlight on my cheekbones (I wear big glasses so it isn't super noticeable if I keep it light).
Granted, I will bust out the bold lipsticks and blushes later ... but I like to keep it neutral in the beginning so people don't apply negative stereotypes to me. Plus, when I do bring the fun, it kinda forces them to evaluate their negative bias towards fun makeup.
I am fairly young and tend to work more in teams than by myself (marketing), so I usually keep it fairly simple/approachable.
A nice champagne shimmer on the lid, a softer brown transition, a mascara that gives a fluffy effect, brown eyeliner only on the outer part and heavy focus on the cheeks is my go-to look for interviews. I think a focused blush across the nose, some natural glow than beaming one makes me look much more approachable and leaves a better impression overall.
Like, as if you can see me hanging out with my coworkers on a normal day but also dressed professional enough/have come prepared enough with my portfolio or cv to tackle challenges as well.
I have a job interview tomorrow for the sales position in an elegant clothing store. I never had a job nor (obviously) a job interview before, so I'm stressed AF and have nothing to wear. Honestly, I didn't expect a call back, and definitely not so soon, so I am unprepared. Those are the only options I have, and I have a hard time choosing. I know they all kind of suck, but please help me choose at least the least bad one, lol. Also is this make up good or should I go heavier/lighter. Plus any tips or what I should expect, do or not do would be greatly appreciated. 🫶 Sorry for the awkward posing and thanks in advance.
TLDR; How should I dress to a job interview + any tips to make good impression/get a job
Yes and Yes. I like #1.
Confidence and Willingness to Learn will matter WAY more than your outfit.
I would say the outfit is 60% of the interview. It shows discretion, understanding social rules, and professionalism.
3 or 5 are the best bet
60%!!! No way. I think you may have your priorities wrong. I can way more about ability to do the job that the shirt you wear. Unless its completely over the top, its a none issue.
Thank you I was just worried about looking unprofessional.
#1 has the Wednesday Addams "I see though your BS" vibe. That *could* backfire if the store leans more corporate. Is it part of a chain or does it look fairly independent?
If they look more like a relaxed store then the 'louder' ones may be kept 'in the bank' for when you get the job so I personally would go for either 3 or 5 for the interview, then 1 and 4 for the job.
Context: I'm a lardass dude who has exactly one suit and wears tees/slacks for non-customer facing work, so take the above with salt :D
It's a chain store, but they're trying to paint themselves as "luxurious" ig :p
Stupid question, but is it possible for you to drop into the store and see what the associates are wearing? Dress one step above that, but try to match the energy. Alternatively, try to match the flavor of the brand, but make it polished and professional.
The outfits you have would be great for an alternative style brand.
Depends on the job…last pic seems most professional regardless
1 and 2 outfits are nice for an interview. I would chose a more matte eyeshadow personally as I think the one you have looks more like an evening eyeshadow. The amount of makeup is great, you could do a more defined lip shade, but the natural look is also nice.
I have a cosmetics customer service rep interview coming up. any advice on what i should wear/look like during the interview?
Neat and clean is the most important
do you think a cardigan with dark blue jeans and black flats would be good for the interview? i’m also going to do natural makeup & straight hair! (:
Yes, that would look on point. You got this! Go in there knowing you are the best candidate and you will be the best candidate. Own it, babe!
Look the part but don't over do it on makeup & dress business casual
My cosmetic manager years ago wanted minimum of mascara, lip gloss and hair done. You have to look the part to sell the products, so just make sure you’re looking your best! Good luck :)
do you think a cardigan with dark blue jeans and black flats would be good for the interview? i’m also going to do natural makeup & straight hair! (:
they usually wear all black
For context,
I am applying for a part-time position that I used to work out when I was a teenager. (They have new management now, so I don’t know the person who is going to be interviewing me)
I do not wear make up daily, and I do not plan to start doing so. (It’s time consuming and expensive, plus I wear a mask so you really only see the top half of my face anyway, and I have glasses so I don’t think eye makeup shoes enough for it to matter. The only thing I really benefit from is foundation / concealer but if I wear those I have to do the rest of my face so I don’t look like a baked potato lol)
But I don’t know if I should wear makeup for the interview? I don’t really expect that to be the make or break of whether I get the job, because they are very very understaffed, but I’m not so sure if it does matter.
Also, I’m in my early twenties, if that’s relevant
If you don’t wear makeup, don’t wear makeup to the interview
You don't have to, but how you look will definitely play a factor on how others view you. No matter how just anybody tries to be, they will unconsciously have a more positive opinion on good-looking people. Make-ups might also speak volumes in creating a perception of professionalism & efforts.
That’s true, thank you! I was also worried about looking too formal, cause it is a daycare so I wasn’t sure if looking like I’m headed for an office job would be too much? But I also wasn’t sure if I was overthinking
A daycare wouldn't require that much formal professionalism, so it's probably an interview where make-up makes less of a difference. Don't overdo the make-up if you opt for it, of course.
Good luck with the interview!
I'd say wear as much makeup as you would on regular day of work where there's a reason to look nice, like a visiting guest or some sort of local event.
Oh that makes sense, thank you!
If a job doesn’t hire you for not wearing makeup, that job would have probably been terrible.
As with anything in a job interview, don't over do it and you'll be fine. Unless the context call for it. So, no clown make up unless you want to be a clown.
Good luck and have a nice life.
I definitely don’t want to be a clown, they scare me 😂 Thank you!
Love the look but I think it may not be appropriate for a hospital job interview
Hospitals generally want minimal makeup on employees, even if not in direct contact with patients
Agreed, but also, dont overline the lips. One, it's a sloppy job, and two, overlining with your particular lip shape, fullness and projection = Instant failure of interview.
Agreed. Hospitals trend very conservatively, esp the more high profile ones.
Whether you’re interviewing for a clinical or administrative role, you should really tone down your eye & lip makeup especially. Piercings, especially facial, should be removed. I would do a very neat & tidy hairstyle, conservative clothes. It comes across as sultry, and that can skew their opinion of you.
I spend a lot of time around hospital peeps & worked at one for years. While I personally love this look, hospitals are the very opposite of fashionable, and trend towards hiring people that appear friendly and a more generic style.
When I interviewed at the hospital I worked at I had face piercings, green hair, and a half shaved head. I also was wearing ripped black jeans, a tshirt, and had big winged eyeliner on. I think it all depends on management and the way you show up for work. I got hired on the spot.
Agree; it looks nice, but…..
I am a Recruiter & have worked at 2 hospitals (currently still do) in Washington, DC. DC is conservative. Unfortunately, that make-up would be a bit too much. I doubt you would get a second interview. Or if you did, they would ask you in a subtle roundabout way that you need to tone it down. But again, that’s in DC.
Best of luck to you in your job search & professional endeavors!!
EDIT: Not in healthcare, but my best friend works for a science, chemistry organization (in DC). Again in DC, we tend to be conservative (not my choice). She wore wigs for her first 90 days (probationary period). Once she passed her 90 days, probationary period, she took the wig off. And, she wore her locks. UNFORTUNATELY, that’s the world we live in (at least in DC).
I think the eyes and lips are good colors on you, but the overlining of the lips is very uneven to the point where it’s almost messy. I would lose the liner if you wish to keep the lip color.
As others have stated, this may be a little bold depending on the type of establishment you’re trying to work for. Perhaps soften the lip a little to a more neutral color and keep the lovely eyes to make yourself more “appealing” to the hiring crew, then rock your cool looks once hired!
I absolutely love the makeup and think you did great but it totally depends…are you interviewing with Sephora or a corporate office? I think we need a little more context.
Yes!! Eyes are great but lip might need to be toned down if going for a corporate position.
I thought the same thing at first glance: for working at Ulta or Sephora or even Macy’s, it’s fabulous! Then when I realized the job is at a hospital….. I think the eyes and lips should look as natural as the blush and eyebrows (nice to see you didn’t go nuts with eyebrow pencil!). Eye shadow color is beautiful but matte would be better; lipstick should be close to the color of your actual lips. 😊
HR person here. You look gorgeous and I think the color palette is spot on, but I would suggest you tone down your eyeliner (and your eyeshadow slightly), pick a more daytime or natural lip color, and avoid overlining your lips. Don’t give the hiring manager or interviewer any reasons to write you off that don’t pertain to your resume or performance in the interview. Especially for a hospital where you may be interacting with patients or the public.
It’s horrible that people have negative preconceived notions of people who wear heavy makeup and their ability to perform a job, but that’s still the world we live in. You will have plenty of opportunities to experiment with wearing makeup like this once you’ve secured the job.
No matter what you choose to do, sending you good vibes for the interview!
Totally sad right? I'm already hired, and in my office no one will care but I still don't go full on, yet. I'm an engineer, a new grad. There's about 5 women including myself that work with or around me. So at this point I am a pretty awful employee relative to everyone else and the last thing I want to do is reinforce a stereotype of the dumb girl who just wants to play with makeup or give people any more reason to assume I'm dumb. Once I have any respect and people have confidence in me, I'll do it, but it won't be for a while.
I just got a job as an engineer and am right out of college too. I used to wear glitter and bright colored makeup everyday. Now ive totally toned down my makeup and only wear powder foundation, eyebrow powder and mascara. It sucks but i try to keep in mind that this is temporary and once I’ve established a good reputation within the company i can start expressing myself through makeup again.
This look is amazing! Good luck on your interview! If you wanted to, you could add a subtly coloured lip gloss or a lipstick with a sheen. I find it helps "freshen" my face up a bit more when I wear one like that. But your look is absolutely great
Thank youI’m adding some of the Vaseline rose lip tint so that might help a bit
Hi! Good luck on the interviews! If I had to give CC, if you wanted a softer look, you could try a thinner line for your eye liner and maybe use brown instead of black. I also don’t think it would be over the top if you added some soft blush. But nothing about what you’ve done is crazy or would give pause to an interviewer, methinks!
Thank you! I’m always scared of trying blush because I feel like no matter how much I blend I feel like a clown
I was going to second the blush idea, just for a little color on the face. Or if blush scares you maybe a little lip tint. I really like the lashes and liner. Good luck in the interview!
Also, maybe opt for a peachy shade instead of a red or pink. I am really fair, so reddish blush makes me look like a clown but peachy looks more natural on me.
If you want to try without a lot of commitment, you can try dabbing a bit of your lipstick onto your cheek and rubbing it in like a cream blush. And it’ll automatically coordinate to your lip color!
Looks great, simple but polished and fresh. Hope your interview went well! Also, unrelated but when taking pics try thinking of something fun or amusing to really make that smile shine!
Looks very pretty and professional! I would say in the future you could go for a softer eye look by putting a dark brown eyeshadow on the lash line and curling you eyelashes. And I agree with the other commenters, a tinted lip balm would look nice as well :)
I think you look fresh, bright and ready to face that job interview! It really depends on what type of job you are interviewing for however. I think the makeup look you chose is subtle and pretty and could work for most interviews. Good luck!
I actually have two! One is for a caregiving position and the other is at a newspaper (I’m not exactly sure what it entails lol)
Oh wow! That’s exciting. I hope they both go well and then you get the awesome situation of having to chose which one you want more!!
I’d tone down the lip personally, maybe a nude lipstick or just a transparent gloss. Everything else looks beautiful & professional to me. Good luck with the interview:)
What’s the interview for?
If it’s public-facing, like retail or office work, tone down the lip (something closer to your natural lip color and less glossy) and only use a small amount of mascara on your upper lashes only.
If it’s a physical labor job, I would skip it all except maybe a little chapstick.
If it’s a job in fashion/make up, it looks good, or maybe even a little tame and would add some subtle but interesting eye shadow or even a tiny restrained bit of a graphic liner. These are the interviews where your make up is part of the skillset you want to sell, so make it subtle but interesting.
I always think about going to interviews like I am an undercover agent trying to infiltrate a foreign spy organization. The goal is to look like the people who already belong there. Fly under the radar and stand out only with the skills and traits you want them to notice. Once you get the job you can do whatever you want, but you want interviewers to think about what you said, not about how much lipgloss you’re wearing.
Even though I wouldn’t wear it for an interview, I love your lip look! What did you use for it?
I once landed a job I really wanted because there was one other girl that looked like me who had platinum blonde hair and full make up and she begged them to hire me. We definitely didn’t fit in, but we brought a ton of business and we were two peas in a pod. We’ve been friends for over 10 years. She’s one of my best friends now.. if you are hard-working and have a great work history and references that will speak volumes above a pink lipstick 😁
Thank you for the advice. I completely get that the lip is too bright lol. Also thats a really fun way of looking at an interview like that tbh. The thing I used for my lips is the collection cheek and lip stain in Rosie 1 and just a carmex lip balm. Again thank you 😊!!!
Yes! I do job interviews and a simple but “put together” look is always the best🙌🏻
Pink lip or any bright lip can be a bit distracting so maybe a lighter shade but besides that looking great! Good luck!!
perfy but the lippy might need to be toned down :)
I like it! I always worry about “overdoing it” too. I try to make sure I’m remembered for what I say, not what my eyeshadow looks like. Maybe a little more lip color? I also usually wear my hair half up, half down to make sure I’m not fidgeting with it and so it doesn’t fall in my face!
exactly how i feel. i tend towards a pretty minimal look most days, so i’d do a bit more for an interview. might be okay with some blemishes and undereye circles for the day to day, but interviews i wanna feel effortlessly flawless
and i agree on the lip. don’t have anything nude rn besides that lipliner (too terra cotta), but i ordered one of the new lisa eldridge nudes that should hopefully be getting here soon. thinking that might be my new shade
You look great! Very professional. I agree that you could add more lip color if you wanted but this looks good too.
revlon candid foundation and concealer, PF butter lip as blush (natural pink), becca shimmering skin perfector liquid, kiko powder bronzer, ulta brow gel, milani matte mini palette, covergirl lashblast, milani lipliner spice, clearing lip comfort oil
Perfect!
have some job interviews coming up and i’m never sure how much is too much and how little is too little. trying to walk the line looking put together and fresh, but not too intense on anything. CCW (also if you happen to have hair suggestions ♀️)
what makeup looks best for a job interview
Key Considerations for Makeup for a Job Interview:
Natural Look: Aim for a polished, natural appearance. Use makeup to enhance your features rather than create a dramatic look.
Foundation: Choose a lightweight foundation or tinted moisturizer that matches your skin tone for an even complexion. Avoid heavy coverage that can appear cakey.
Eyes: Opt for neutral eyeshadow shades (beige, taupe, soft browns) and a subtle eyeliner. A coat of mascara can help define your eyes without being overpowering.
Brows: Well-groomed brows frame your face. Use a brow pencil or gel to fill in any sparse areas, keeping it natural.
Cheeks: A light blush in a soft pink or peach adds a healthy glow. Avoid overly bright or shimmery products.
Lips: Choose a neutral or soft lip color (nude, soft pink, or peach). Matte or satin finishes are generally more professional than glossy.
Setting: Use a setting spray or powder to keep your makeup in place throughout the interview.
Recommendation: Keep your makeup minimal and professional. A good rule of thumb is to apply makeup that enhances your natural beauty while ensuring you feel confident. Practice your look beforehand to ensure you feel comfortable and authentic on the day of the interview.
