What Redditors are Saying

Best Historical Anime

TL;DR

  • Vinland Saga and Kingdom are highly recommended for historical themes.
  • Dororo offers a blend of history and supernatural elements.
  • Samurai Champloo and Rurouni Kenshin provide engaging narratives set in historical Japan.

Vinland Saga

Vinland Saga is frequently mentioned as a top choice for historical anime, focusing on the Viking era. It combines historical fiction with compelling storytelling and character development [1:2][2:1]. The series is praised for its accurate portrayal of historical figures and events, making it a favorite among fans seeking historical depth [4:6].

Kingdom

Kingdom is another popular recommendation, particularly for its depiction of China's Warring States period. While some viewers criticize its historical accuracy [4:4], others appreciate its detailed exploration of historical themes and characters [2:1]. The manga version is often recommended for a more comprehensive experience [4:7].

Dororo

Dororo stands out for blending historical settings with supernatural elements. Set in a fantastical version of Japan's Sengoku period, it offers a unique narrative that captivates audiences despite its deviation from strict historical accuracy [3:2][4:8]. Its animation quality and storyline have garnered significant praise [4:1].

Samurai Champloo

Samurai Champloo is celebrated for its vibrant depiction of Edo-period Japan, mixing historical context with modern influences like hip-hop music [3:1][5:5]. The dynamic trio of protagonists and the series' unique style make it a standout choice for those interested in historical fantasy [4:3].

Additional Recommendations

Other notable mentions include Rurouni Kenshin, which explores the Meiji Restoration era with a focus on samurai culture [5:6], and The Heroic Legend of Arslan, inspired by Sasanian-era Iran but set in a fictional world [4:5]. Golden Kamuy is also suggested for its post-Russian-Japanese War setting [2:4][5:2].

These recommendations offer a diverse range of historical settings and narratives, catering to various tastes and preferences within the genre.

ORIGINAL POST

I'm looking to find an anime for my father to watch. He told me he likes shows that talk about history and present accurate aspects of history. I was initially thinking of Golden Kamuy, but there's little history in it. Do you have any suggestions?

Orb on The Movements of Earth. It's historic fiction and revolves around a few historic themes, though not everything is really based on historic events, but it's genuinely a masterpiece of an anime.

Best HISTORICAL anime like Vinland Saga.

Asking for a friend. Not including Vagabond because he doesn’t read manga. He is strictly an anime only guy. He likes Historical Fantasy more than Historical Fiction. But he did enjoy Vinland Saga a lot what do you think is the next anime he should start. If you have a recommendation that isn’t on this list. Please comment. Thanks!

I would recommend "Historie" by Hitoshi Iwaaki. It is a criminally underrated historical manga about the early lives of Alexander the Great and his right hand Eumenes. This series is very similar to post-prologue Vinland Saga in terms of slow-paced, but nonetheless very entertaining exploration of the era that the story takes place in, including great art, impressive attention to detail (you can tell that the author has done a lot of research on Ancient Greece and Macedonia, just like Yukimura did with the vikings) and thought-provoking themes.

The only big downside that this series is not finished and new chapters release even less frequently than Berserk :(

Dororo is absolutely fkin incredible and it's animated by Mappa as well. It's OP/ED1 are amazing, and the storyline is perhaps one of the best I've ever seen. Give it a watch, it's only 24 episodes.

No offence, but i wouldn’t really put it into the historical genre because of the insane amount of supernatural stuff. Plus the plot is on the thinner side with character development being rather weak. If you want to watch something with a nice art style and overall aesthetic - it’s a good choice. Other than that - it’s not comparable to Vinland Saga.

Samurai Champloo would be something I’d suggest in the same “laid-back” type of anime I’d put next to Dororo, with OST just as good as Vinland, dynamic trio of very different protagonists and end of Edo period setting. It doesn’t tick all of the boxes, but it’s a solid anime directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, who also directed Cowboy Bebop. Both are really well known, classic anime.

I have to disagree on the character development/plot part being weak. But we all have our opinions so it's cool :) I know Dororo is supernatural stuff but since it was an option in the poll I went straight for it because it genuinely is a great anime that was worth the time I spent watching it. Although I agree, it's not on the level of Vinland Saga.

What are some good animes in a historical setting?

Posted by Killastorm83 · in r/anime · 4 years ago

I just finished watching Golden Kamuy and I loved it. It follows a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war and its constantly talking about some political and social context, giving a glimpse into the post war Japan. It algo dives into the Ainu traditions and history, that are not usually explored.

So now, I'm looking for an anime that is similar to golden Kamuy. While it can have some embellishment and the plot itself doesn't need to be 100% real, I do want it to have a realistic setting and be able to learn about any period in time, no matter if its in Japan or anywhere else.

Best historical anime for non-anime fans?

Posted by Fendstrum · in r/Animesuggest · 3 years ago

I recently watched the anime series Vinland Saga and loved everything about it, and I'm curious of there are many other historical anime that are as good as this and are as rich in story telling? I'm a big fan of the historical genre in tv so after Vinland Saga I'm intrigued. Only thing I'd prefer there not be is a lot of I guess "anime" tropes where the show doesn't feel as serious.

I know of another called Kingdom that my friend loves, but he told me to completely skip the anime and read the manga instead so don't bother recommending that one, will read it soon.

Also, I've watched attack on titan so I'm aware it has a similar feel to it.

{The wind rises} - Movie about Jiro Horikoshi, a japanese airplane designer/engineer during WW2 who designed their (in)famous "zero" airplane.

{Grave of the fireflies} - Another WW2 movie, haven't seen it myself but it's supposed to be really good.

{Princess Mononoke} - More history/fantasy-esque movie set in historical Japan with forest spirits and nature deities etc.

{Samurai Champloo} - Another show set in a historical japanese setting.

best historical anime

Key Considerations for Historical Anime:

  1. Historical Accuracy: Some anime take creative liberties with historical events, while others strive for accuracy. Decide if you prefer a more factual representation or a fictionalized narrative.

  2. Cultural Representation: Look for anime that authentically represent the culture and time period they depict, providing insight into historical customs, attire, and societal norms.

  3. Character Development: Strong character arcs can enhance your viewing experience, making historical figures relatable and engaging.

  4. Art Style and Animation Quality: The visual presentation can significantly impact your enjoyment. Look for anime with high-quality animation that captures the essence of the time period.

  5. Genre Blending: Many historical anime incorporate elements of action, romance, or fantasy. Consider what genres you enjoy to find the best fit.

Recommended Historical Anime:

  1. "Vinland Saga" - Set in the Viking era, this anime combines historical events with deep character development and themes of revenge and redemption.

  2. "Attack on Titan" - While it has fantasy elements, it draws inspiration from historical themes and military tactics, set in a world reminiscent of early 20th-century Europe.

  3. "Mushishi" - This series explores folklore and nature in a historical setting, focusing on the interactions between humans and supernatural creatures.

  4. "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" - A beautifully animated film based on a classic Japanese folktale, showcasing traditional art styles and cultural themes.

  5. "Hyouge Mono" - Set during the Sengoku period, it delves into the world of tea ceremonies and the aesthetics of the time, offering a unique perspective on Japanese history.

Takeaway: Each of these recommendations offers a unique blend of history, culture, and storytelling. Depending on your interests, you can choose one that resonates with you the most!
